Being Frank
As an offensive lineman, Frank Loyd Jr.’s value was his intelligence, versatility and intelligence that allowed him to be versatile.
He could play both tackle and both guard positions. But he also knew the center’s assignments, and he was willing to be a long-snapper.
The past year, Loyd earned a degree in business management and finance. He then received an offer to work for a financial company. He also received an offer to be a graduate assistant for the state-of-the-art Warrior Recreation Center. And, of course, he had an open invitation to participate in UH’s pro day.
To outsiders’ surprise, Loyd chose the GA offer. That meant turning down an opportunity to work in his studied field. That meant, effectively, ending his football career. But Loyd, who acts rather than reacts, did what he does best: He expanded his options. At the center, he can develop management and leadership skills. He also can continue to receive a free education. Perhaps he can pursue an MBA; perhaps he can apply for law school.
There are studies that show that an advanced degree will greatly enhance a person’s lifetime income. Student loans, of course, will offset those gains. But Loyd, who was on scholarship during his UH football career, does not have any school-related debt.
It’s difficult when the game ends. But it is better when it is the player who gets to make the decision.
Congrats to FL Jr on making a sound decision for his future.
Also congrats to M/M FL Sr for raising such a fine young man.

I read Ferd’s article and nodded that Amemiya should have received an opportunity to interview and the hell with a “prerequisite” of having minimum of 3 years of athletic experience at the college level. What Amemiya did with HSSTA is worth more than that minimum requirement. Who thinks McNamara can do better?
Just proves that certain “educated, intelligent” individuals don’t always “get it!” Due diligence begs that they “waive” a minimum requirement and should have offered an interview. Was it Haruki’s decision to block an interview?
I certainly hope that his meeting with chancellor opened the door and prove the “search committee” wrong!!!!!!!!!!!
Reading the Rainbows article, I hasten back to January 2008 at the Sugar Bowl when the Hawaii fans joined the band with Hawaii Pono’i – for those who were fortunate to participate, thank you for honoring the UH football team, even if they lost – it displayed heart felt affection to them, the State, and all Hawaii fans from across the nation that WE are who we are and take great pride in being from or associated with Hawaii.
Unfortunately for us, we were hastened out of the stadium to catch our bus back to the hotel to pack and get ready to leave
For whomever decided it proper to play, sing Hawaii Pono’i last night at the Honda arena, thank you for making us proud!!!!!!!!

I remember that at the superdome. It was pretty emotional considering the whooping that Georgia put on UH. The walk back to the hotel that night felt like an eternity.

Good to see UH chasing championships today., The two coaches have done it the RIGHT WAY by promoting a positive attitude, engaging the public, and hard work…No matter the outcome today, the are both winners & the State should be proud. Hopefully, Chow has seen the light & is able to achieve a level of success this season or it’s back to the drawing board…
Let’s hope that practicality prevails with the hiring of the new AD. Glad to see that at least KA got his interview.
The world is full of rich, powerful and successful men and women, who, despite not meeting the “minimum standard requirements”, are tops in their field.

I went to see Hingson Chun once for a consultation as he shares an office with my cardiologist, Dr. Fukuyama. He was quite a character.
Hard to watch the Wahine BB game. They’re playing out of sync, throwing the ball away at least four times so far and missing easy shots under the rim. Just hoping they turn things around in the second half.
One would think hiring a AD with a law degree can only benefit a program that has had problems reading contracts. Having experience in a college athletic administration capacity seems to be offset by a ton with everything KA can bring to the table.
For the AD interviews, I hope they hand the candidates a stack of contracts and ask them to identify potential problems and solutions. Put Gib’s on top.

Even though the WBB team lost, the future is very bright for the program. Coach Beeman should be very proud of the ladies from Manoa and so should the State.
Megan Huff reminds me of Bill Walton, with the quirky wrist shot, banking off the glass and great outlet passes. Once she works on not leaving her feet defensively, she’ll be a great all around player.

Who interviewed Keith A?
If the committee, I don’t hold much hope he will be their recommended choice for UHAD? Why, simple; he was NOT considered worthy to be initially interviewed by the search committee because he did not have the 3-year requisite of college administration experience which is a bunch of “hog-wash”.
I hold the same opinion why – damn, forgot his name – prepped at Kalani and played short-stop for the Orioles until replaced by a 6′ 5″ guy who is now in the “hall” at Cooperstown.
Bachelors degree was a requisite and the committee would not budge to give him credit for all his years, 10 I believe in MLB and coach of minor league teams. They could have said, “we will select you, but you must complete your bachelors degree within 3 years – believe he was 10 credits short – and the “beat goes on” for UH search/selection committees
a major prerequisite to be on a search committee should be COMMON SENSE – selection of “prominent” Hawaii citizens is no guarantee that they will select the best for Hawaii – just look at the failure list from President to Chancellor to AD to head coaches!!!
Why can’t the Legislature change the law to exclude HC at UH or UH Hilo. True, this is not the “golden” answer, but many mainland schools targeted a specific person, went after him/her, got them, and succeeded – true, not for all, but a significant majority!
Even the youn’gin ones still cling to the paternalistic attitude that existed post- WWII — I’m Sansei and let that attitude go while in high school
Take a look at the AD selection advisory committee– no prominent Hawaii citizens or leaders on the committee. Committee had a lot of low level UH bureaucrats. The only prominent business leader quit after the committee would not consider his nomination of Blangiardi. A committee like this one is bound to have narrow restricted vision because for many of the members that is their job outside the committee. Leaders have common sense manager/care taker types manage according to the rules and the user’s manual.

Regular season champs and 2nd place in the conference tournament is outstanding in my book. Sometimes the ball bounces the other way. Hosting an NIT tournament would be great for the fans. Maybe not as great for the Wahine as winning it all in the Big West tournament and heading he the NCAA tournament, but more fun for the fans. Congratulations again to the team and coach!
The Wahine basketball team are champs as far as I am concerned. They had a great run and weren’t even considered to be anything but middle of the pack at the beginning of the season. Coach Beeman is one terrific coach.

Wrong assumption – the legal people up at UH had to read the contracts before anyone like the Chancellor gets to sign the same. If that was not done, they are a bunch of incompetents. Of course, if the legal people are … well, you get the idea.
KA is a bright one – have no problems with him should he be selected as AD.

As I read the article, it appears to me that Keith met with Bly-Vroman and not the committee. As Ferd stated in his article, Bly-Vroman doesn’t have to accept the committees recommendation. I like what he did, if he indeed gave Keith an interview.
I feel so bad for the Wahine. Picked the wrong day to play so poorly.

It was great being at the Sugar Bowl. So much Aloha shared around town before & during game. We shared A-House experience of catching bus and rush to pack while it seemed an eternity for room service.
What a difference though … conference championship & one game away from the NCAA tournament … versus Football the last 3 years. Shoot … year two we were one win away from two wins 🙂 … UH needs to hire Benjy … this is truly We Get’em time.
Just finished watching UH MBB, sad ending, but still a season they should be proud of.
Road trip finished, saw 5 UNC Tarheels games in 8 days with a 3 win – 2 loss record. College atmosphere at Chapel Hill superior to Greensboro Colloseum. Watched 11 ACC tourney games in 4 days. Ready for March Madness to continue.
Wish Rainbow Warriors & Rainbow Wahines were included. Can our girls receive an at large bid?
Hawaii would have been on the bubble had Colorado State won their tournament. Alas, they bowed out to San Jose State(a sub-.500) team in the first round. Interestingly, in the current RPI, they’re one spot ahead of Texas Christian(#71), who is touted as a bubble team on the ESPN women’s basketball page.
Being a mid-major puts you at such a disadvantage. When Hawaii beat last place UC-Santa Barbara, they dropped twelve spots in the RPI. Late in the season, Hawaii had no chance to strengthen its resume.
On the sunnier side, maybe we get to keep our brilliant coach.
As for the men, Jankovich…dude…that airball three-pointer sucked all the air out of the building.
That last shot Garrett Nevels took summed up his whole season, albeit beset by a hand injury. Duly noted. Instead of taking a forget-me-not three, he passed it up and drove to the basket. He is a catch and shoot guy, not Steve Nash, right?
As for somebody who attended the CIT game against Air Force, two seasons ago, and watched Vander Joaquim walk out on his teammates, ending it all now is the way to go. There is absolutely no post-game atmosphere at these pay-for-play games. It reeks of desperation.
Fun season. Not a Parghalava among both the men and women.

To those “I-D-I-O-T-S” who are in favor of shutting down the UH Football Program I say this … this is what collegiate athletics is all about; a guy who has developed character, knows what teamwork is all about, got his degree, and will be a great asset in our community for years to come. He’s the kind of guy who will “give back” and it would not surprise me if FL Jr gets involved w/ young people to try and steer them on the right track w/ academics & athletics. AWESOME STORY

I was going to write that all teams lost yesterday, but that would be inaccurate. The women’s Water Polo and Tennis teams won yesterday. The No. 8 Water Polo team, playing at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, took down Wagner 10-5. The No. 64 Women’s Tennis team beat Cal State Fullerton, 4-3 on senior day.
