20-point road wins
Hawaii won by 21 points in the regular-season finale at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.
Here’s how rare that was.
In the last 20 years, there’s only been one true road victory by 20 points or more on an opponent’s home court. There were two other such wins on neutral sites, both coming in WAC tournaments.

The win at Fullerton also gave Benjy Taylor his 20th victory in his first season as a head coach at UH. That’s the most among first-year Manoa coaches in the all-collegiate opponent era, surpassing the 19 of Bruce O’Neil and Gib Arnold. Only Art Gallon (24-3 in 1947-48) had more in his first season coaching, but that schedule included just five collegiate opponents.

Fifth-seeded UH plays No. 4 Long Beach State in the second game of the day in the Big West tournament quarterfinals on Thursday. It should start at roughly 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time at the Honda Center, or perhaps shortly thereafter. That’s 11:30 a.m. in the islands. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Prime Ticket.
Brian: Mahalo for looking back into archives. Know that in Riley’s last years, Bob Nash tenure , and even Gib’s time, yes 20 point wins on road rare, Even rarer in past decade or little more, to win that opening round game of Conference Tournament.
At 20 wins, and potentially a 21st win, and into the semis.. I hope UH admin , or chancellor speed up the process to hire new head coach.. for stability sake.. Benjy Taylor would be top choice.. the guys know him, and he knows the team and their families.. If Benjy and team they make it to championship game win it. .NCAA tournament bound.. and what a Resume. even if they make it to Championship and lose.. standing at 22 wins overall , that is impressive still for all that went down this year.. And Benjy.. is right. nationally, he is know for helping MBB program through adversity..
Benjy Taylor would be good fit..One year guaranteed, 2 year, whatever. as long as guaranteed with possibility of extension after first year.
Nope, I disagree. Remember the pending infractions not too long ago? If UH thinks it has a chance to sneak into the tourney, the NCAA will come down on them even harder. Need to make the declaration now for post-season ban. If you think this year’s team is good, we only lose 2 and another possible 2 during the off-season for next year. The NIT is a good possibility next season. Take the punishment now and start off clean next year. I also like Benji as permanent coach of the team. As for the Gib caper, he has the audacity to try to get more money from the school he coached and supposedly love. Fire his a$$ one more time, and this time with cause. Let’s see him get another gig elsewhere in the future. Just like former president Dobelle, once a cheater, always a cheater.
Well, sadly, my friend still didn’t play, didn’t even get a ‘pretend’ he’s gonna play by putting him on the roster. Like I said before, I wouldn’t be so opinionated except the coach hard pressed his father and him to come to Hawaii, made it sound so good even without any type of financial offer. I heard from the sports people that the A team guy is ‘on fire’ which is another way to say, he’s the only guy who plays. Just think, if he sat out a half game he might see the B team score smoking’ statistics too, but you will never know because that’s the way the coach wants it.
