LIVE BLOG: Pepperdine 16, Hawaii 1, F
After hitting three more home runs on Thursday, UH has gone deep more times in the last four games than it did in the entire 2013 season. Crazy, huh? Can the bats keep it going today against Pepperdine ace Jackson McClelland? First pitch is at Noon. Quintin Torres-Costa gets the start for the ‘Bows.
UH 2B Stephen Ventimilia will miss his third game of the season with a knee injury. Ventimilia sat out two games of the Hofstra series with the flu.

No Aaron Barnett in the lineup for the Waves. Barnett is hitting .371 and was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored on Thursday. Yamaguchi gets his second consecutive start at catcher with Crowder (.143 average) in the DH spot.
On the ESPN 1420-AM pregame show, announcer Mel Proctor said that Ventimilia will be put on a plane Monday and sent home meaning he’s out for at least the next six games of the road trip.
INNING 1: UH down in order. Torres-Costa issues a one-out walk to Moyer and a single by Anderson puts runners on first and second with one out. Costello with a deep drive to center but Aliviado chases it down for the second out. Torres-Costa strikes out Crowder swinging and Pepperdine strands runners on second and third.
BOTTOM 2: Fornaci with a leadoff single and takes second on a bobble by Baldwin in left, which is ruled an error. Yamaguchi with the successful sacrifice bunt to move Fornaci to third. Torres-Costa freezes Jefferson with a 3-2 fastball called for strike 3. Four-pitch walk to Lambert, the No. 9 hitter, who is hitless this year. That brings up Caruso with runners on the corners. Caruso goes ahead 3-1 and then rips an RBI double down to left. Torres-Costa getting behind way too many hitters. Now he hits Moyer to load the bases for Anderson. Torres-Costa walks Anderson to force in a run. That’s three walks and a hit batter already. Costello bloops an 0-2 pitch into shallow center for a base hit to drive in two more. Now he hits Crowder and Torres-Costa is all over the place. Waves have bat around in the inning. Torres-Costa walks in another run. Yamaguchi with a two-run single and Torres-Costa is done. Eight straight batters reach base with two outs in the inning. Alex Hatch in and he throws four straight balls to Jefferson to load the bases. Now another walk to bring in another run. This has been a dumpster fire of an inning that ends with Carsuo grounding into a fielder’s choice.
Torres-Costa’s final line: 1 2/3 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 4 BB, 2 K.
No hits for Hawaii through four innings against McClelland. Lambert’s first hit of the season is a two-run homer off Hatch to make it 10-0. Hawaii still hitless through five innings. Fornaci with a sacrifice fly to score Costello in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-0.
Not much else to report for now. UH won’t use any of its key relievers in this game. Only question now is if they can get a hit off of McClelland.
TOP 6: LoCoco gets Hawaii’s first hit with a two-out double in the sixth. Sheldon-Collins dumps a single into shallow left-center and LoCoco scores UH’s first run.
BOTTOM 6: Hatch gives up a walk and a single and is done. A Caruso single loads the bases and Moyer delivers a sacrifice fly to bring in a run. Anderson grounds out to third to bring in another run.
Hatch’s final line: 3 1/3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K.
TOP 7: Tough to explain Ramirez getting picked off at first in a 13-1 game but that’s exactly what happened after he drew a four-pitch walk.
BOTTOM 8: Chew comes in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and gives up three runs on four hits.
FINAL. UH finishes with four hits. McClelland (2-0) allowed three htis in eight innings with one walk and two strikeouts. The 15-run loss matches the worst in the Mike Trapasso era (17-2 loss to Arizona State in 2009). Sheldon-Collins had two of uH’s four hits.
Game 3 is 11 a.m. on Saturday.
