Sunday checkin
Last night’s thread has gotten fairly lengthy.
Taking the day off, as is the team, so will check in later.
Team is taking today and Monday off. Back in the gym Tuesday. May not be the early morning practice since it’s a holiday.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the RPI Monday. Hawaii was at 30, Long Beach at 31, CSUN at 36. Gimmilaro, who is on the regional committee, thought there was a chance the Big West would get 3 teams in. Just don’t see it myself.
Davis has done well in conference but their RPI is 142.
Enjoy the day. it’s been beautiful so far. Had a great paddle off Lanikai and Kailua.

Don’t think the Big West can get three in either…Utah just swept UCLA & USC swept Colorado…Is it possible for ten Pac-12 teams to make the tourney?
Saw Kan and Anae today, but I wish UH offered them earlier. Especially Kan, UH could really use her backrow passing and digging.
Not sure if Kan would have stayed home even if offered.
Kan instead of Nikki Taylor? Kan is not a setter, and they needed one for that class as Uiato was graduating.
Anae would have been a good pickup as an OH. In place of Greeley, or Huff?
I thought UH did not go after Anae because she wanted to play both Basketball and Volleyball.
Kazu, you are thinking of Alohi Robins-Hardy
Woulda, coulda, shoulda, The coaching staff has done an amazing job of recruiting over the past several years considering who we have to recruit against. Most Pac 12 schools have high quality programs along with the prestige to grab the cream of the crop out of California. Our own league has 3 schools that are in the top 50 in the Nation as far as enrollment desirability goes. Our coaches need to find kids that have some type of tie to Hawaii or who realize that they can learn and grow in this great volleyball environment.
Yes the 2013/2014/2015 classes have been amazing. But the 2011 and 2012 were very poor and a big reason why UH is unranked right now. 2011 poor due to transfers however.
~~ From the Who Cares Department ~~
NCAA DI’s perfect-record teams remain at 3, and each of these are on track to be the top seed in one of the 4 NCAA Championship regions:
1. With 3-2 wins over Arizona and Arizon St, #1 Stanford improves to 24-0, its best start since 1991 … 6 matches left … Next: @ USC on 11/12 (Wed) & @ UCLA on 11/13 (Th) … Mark it on your calendar: November 26 (Wed) = Stanford versus Washington.
2. Sweeps over the two Oregons and #2 Washington (25-0, best start in school history) moves back into a tie for the Pac-12 lead with Stanford … 6 matches left, and both the Dawgs and the Cardinals are now 6 games clear of the rest of the conference … Next: @ Colorado on 11/13 (Th) & @ Utah on 11/15 (Sat).
3. With an easy win over Virginia, #3 Florida State (24-0, 12-0 conf.) of the 15-school ACC extends the longest winning streak in Noles’ history … 6 matches left … Next: @ #25 Duke (18-6, 10-3 conf.) on 11/13 (Th) & @ #8 North Carolina (20-2, 11-1 conf.) on 11/14 (Fri) … FYI: Duke is tied for 3rd and N. Carolina is 2nd in the race for league bragging rights.
As for who will take the top seed in the remaining region is anyone’s guess at this point, but the battle should be among the following:
Texas (18-1, 10-1 conf.) could claim the the 9-team Big 12 title this week … 6 matches left … @ W. Virginia on 11/12 (Wed) & @ Oklahoma (17-7, 8-3 conf.) on 11/15 … FYI: Oklahoma (2nd place in the Big 12) swept Texas @ Texas on 10/25.
Wisconsin (22-2, 13-1 conf.) leads the 12-team Big Ten … 6 matches left … hosts Michigan on 11/12 (Wed) & @ Iowa on 11/15 (Sat).
Florida (19-3, 13-0 conf.) leads the 13-member SEC… 6 matches left … hosts Auburn on 11/12 (Wed) & @ Kentucky (22-4, 11-2), which is 2nd in the conf., on 11/16 (Sun) … FYI: On the day before Selection Sunday, the Gators travels to Texas for a non-conf. match with the Longhorns.
Penn State (24-3, 12-2 conf.), which is 2nd to the Badgers in the 12-team Big Ten race … 6 matches left … hosts Iowa on 11/12 (Wed) & Michigan on 11/15 (Sat).

As for the Big West, very interested to see Monday’s new RPI for LBSU, Hawai’i, and CSUN. LBSU (# 31) will need to move into the RPI top 25 for any consideration to host a subregional. [Ditto #28 BYU of the WCC.] Hawai’i (# 30) will likely stay around where it is, but this week’s bye week will surely drop its RPI come next Monday. And CSUN (# 36) should be prepared for the worst. Remember: there’s only 33 at-large openings, and the bulk of these — little less than half — will go to the Big Ten and Pac-12 in-the-money horses.
orbitalripz — i believe there are 32 at-large bids now (to go along with 32 automatic bids).
this is due to some teams leaving the big east. ironically, the teams that left the big east kept the “big east” as the name of their conference. and the original big east conference renamed itself the american athletic conference. but out of all this, an additional conference created an additional automatic bid.
Given the unpredictability of the NCAA and a lower RPI there is no guarantee of Hawaii even being invited. Moreover, if Hawaii receives an invitation to the NCAA regionals, it may be wise to rest Nikki Taylor for the rest of the season. After seeing the big ice pack on Nikki Taylor’s elbow and mention of an elbow specialist (during her interview) it is apparent that she is not 100%. She feels about 95%; however, she does not play front row in practice and they give her a “shot” before playing.
10.
That doesn’t really make sense. They won’t know if they make the tournament until the end of the season so how could they rest Taylor for that? If they rest her and lose another game, then there will not be any post season tournament for them.
hawaii is in the NCAA tournament. their RPI should hold strong, even with one more loss. but, of course, to remove all doubt, they should just focus on winning out. the match at UCSB in 2 weeks looks the most dangerous and likely loss, among the matches left. but hawaii has 2 weeks to prep for it, so no excuses.
if csun can keep their RPI in the 30s, they’ll get in, and the big west will have 3 bids to the tournament. but tough road for them, they still have davis, ucsb and irvine left to finish the season.
Yup, the 2011/2012 classes have had players transfer or not pan out, but the recruiting classes are getting better. Players like Taylor, Greeley/Kahakai, Castillo/Mitchem, and Iosia have been or will be gems as underclassmen.
6. agree with Ron about the could have/would have.
Logan Tom a prime example. Told me that she wouldn’t take a recruiting trip to Hawaii because she knew if she did she’d sign. Dad was still here. spent much time here during summers.
Hawaii gets the best they can get, given their obstacles, more since the BCS came into the picture and that money has funneled into volleyball.
8. Don’t know if the bye week will hurt.it all depends on what the other teams do.
10. as for Taylor, she’s had ice packs all season. She’s been seeing specialists already. She isn’t 100 percent. but has improved to being almost there. The week off will help. She isn’t involved in many blocking drills. She does shots and electrotherapy.
I feel that if Hawaii wins out, they get in. The only ‘bad’ loss is to CSUN. The other losses all to ranked teams, three of those went five.
11. agree with Andrew. unless something drastic happens and she re-injures the blow, they aren’t sitting her.
BTW, new thread up on Hawaii still unranked. will update when the RPI comes out
Re: 9 … I think you are probably right about the 32-32 bids. I did know that Louisville left the Big East for the ACC and Rutgers joined the Big Ten. But I forgot about the AAC, as what happens on the East Coast rarely registers in my mind. (San Diego State is an AAC associate member in women’s rowing.
AAC will get an automatic, but I do not know if the NCAA ended an automatic bid from one of the minor conferences. Unlikely but possible, as the NCAA has repeatedly stated that NOT ALL conference champions receive an automatic berth into D1’s women’s volleyball championship tournament. NCAA’s official site says it’s still 33-31 but 32-32 sounds plausible.
orbitalripz — no worries. and i believe there were 32 automatic bids starting last year …
SDSU in the AAC for rowing they needed to be in a conference for national championship reasons.. Sac State in there as well.
Kind of surprised they aren’t in the WCC but maybe their request wasn’t accepted.
Not too many conferences sponsor the sport. The MWC doesn’t, the Big West doesn’t.
