Happy Halloween: Hawaii 3, UCI 2,
Match on Espn3 www.espn.go.com
Kathy Gregory doing color for this match, as well as tomorrow’s at Fullerton, which is on ESPN3 as well
Radio on 1420 a.m. online at espn1420am.com
Nice to see Gregory. She is enjoying semiretirement. have always found her to be refreshingly honest.
very late arriving crowd. don’t think you’ll get much of a student presence. there’s Halloween stuff going on around campus. it’s 603 and maybe 50 people here.

this should be na wahines first win in the solid green
kalei is pronounced keli hahaha
i’m blocked @ work 🙁 for ESPN3 boo…
did it start yet? scores? thank u!
na wahine gunner baby g!
Hawaii was up 15-10. it’s now 15-13. TO Wahine
3. you can listen online. live stats available too
Two kills by UCI middles ties it up. at 16. Greeley with the kill makes it 17-16
wahine giving up ground. need to play better.
come on wahine prove that it is still difficult to defeat the bows not that na wahine gives up ground easily
and just like that UCI goes on a 3-0 run. it’s 22-20 Anteaters. TO UH
Manu-Olevao hits long. UCI wins it 25-21.
Lee got hot at the end, ended up 5-1-14. UH with 5 blocks but 5 SEs Taylor not playing like she did Sunday 2=1-8, Magill 5-1-9.
Can’t say much. I know its early yet but I hope they don’t blow it. Nice to see coach Gregory. Nice gym.
Olevao really struggles on the road, and she gets set way too much.
UC Irvine giving the gauchos a run as the tip queens, shame on UH not picking these tips up.
another bad rotation for Hawaii. they were up 8-6. UCI up 11-8. TO UH
Long seriously, I don’t even know what Shoji is thinking.
WTH. Cindy what is Dave thinking? Long? OMG. They look tired.
Wahine have yet to response to the tips.
I don’t know. not like i can ask him
Missing more float serves
Underarm serves please
The one thing they are doing is taking Taylor out of the back row.
a little surprised since she did well last Sunday.
Team looks tired. Only bright spot is magill. Olevao and Taylor kind of quiet.
Those tips are doing them in.Shoji needs to come up with some magic here.
It will be tough if they go down 0-2. they’ll be back on the side with the students in the bleachers who have been a little abusive
I hate this
Long is playing fine. do we really have to do this again?
Magill with the overpass. close to 22-21. TO UCI
Mendoza completely ineffective in defense tonight. Shoji has to make quick changes soon.
Mendoza with 13 digs.
They have not tip in a while, so trust me after T/O UCI will tip again
UCI wins 25-22.
24. agree with you that they look tired. Magill 9-1-15, UH cut down not its service errors, had 3 in Set 2. Wahine had 6 blocks, led in that department 11-5.
both liberos with 13
Yep looking like world champs.
This is embarrassing. Irvine surely opened its bag of tricks, no treat there. Hawaii seems sluggish. Is it the road trip that tires them so much? I’d sure be very tired after a red-eye flight with only one day to recuperate. It will be a happy Halloween for Irvine unless Hawaii can turn it around.
Cindy, are you on court there? If yes, how come you had to travel so far when the match is broadcast anyway on ESPN3?
A change in the way they travel might help. Cindy you made the trip how do you feel,a little out of sync ?
Stats pretty even except for digs (UCI) block (UH) and service errors (UH)
Hawaii needs a better back row defender and has to get all serves in. Cathy Gregory even mentioned how surprised she is by Hawaii not changing its defense. Mendoza is 2 step behind the balls falling in front of her.
Kahakai in a libero.
35. I’m in California for something else. Said I’d cover the matches other wise we would have had a stringer. Just because it’s on TV doesn’t mean anything to the paper
double sub with Koelsch and Passi.
36. they took the red-eye for the first time this season. What change do you want?
Not looking good for UH. Chances of them winning in 5 is slim not the way their
playing tonight.
Higgins really? Gave 2 easy points
Put Koelsch back
Irvine plays like the old wahine teams hustling to the ball. Hawaii coaches must be tired too just seating there while the other coach is up and around.
Koelsch is in. misset to Magill. but of course no one is complaining about that.
45. that’s not true about the UH coaches. but UCI is playing really good defense
46 shes done more in a few minutes shes been in cold out of the bench but sure
another misset to Magill. Higgins back in. it’s 17-13. TO UH
can tell you the student section is being very obnoxious. approaching the Wahine players during the timeout when the subs were warming up they finally got security.
no leader….no fire
Greeley with the kill. UCI up 21-19. TO Anteaters.
How about they fly out as early as possible on Thursday? Although next time they have to travel to Cal Poly first. So perhaps they’ll have to find a flight without much waiting time in Los Angeles.
If road trips are so tiring for Hawaii, no use to send them again on a road trip to the playoffs. This is not Hawaii’s year. I wouldn’t mind if they stayed home this year and did not make the playoffs. It would be more merciful. Sorry to sound so downbeat, but every team has a bad year. Only two teams made the playoffs consistently every year, Penn State and Stanford.
no fight….they just don’t look like they want it. Looks like they can’t wait for the game to be over.
UCI needs to recoup and plan for the next big tip
Frustrating. Enjoy the rest of the match folks. Going to get ready for the Halloween kiddies. Tomorrow’s match between LBS and CSUN will be better match to watch.
UCI with a lift. it’s 21-21. very surprised that UCI isn’t doing a better job about their student section. guys are sticking their hands out trying to dig the ball away from Guinasso during the TO
Just spotted Ali Longo… Memories of Hawaii’s defensive days
Cindy cant Dave intervene and bring it to the refs?
Hawaii wins 26-24.
58. Longo is a student coach.
interesting a bunch of the students just left.
UCI has added some extra ushers on the baseline but it’s the baseline that UCI is now on.
Got to give credit to Olevao when UCI got the match point, while she was still on the floor, shes already getting the team to focus on the next point. Didnt hear what she said but can tell, shes putting it all out there right now, plus the last few points she did.
Kahakai still in at libero.
lets go bows! fight ladies fight!
Up ref has been pretty good but missed two calls of late. one of UH’s kills was down. you could hear it hit the floor then UCI player crossed the center line, hit the bottom of the net. UCI takes a 6-5 lead. and a rare service error makes it 6-6
Nice beach set by Taylor and it’s 11-8. TO UCI
UCSB at UC Davis in the fifth
63 she stabilized the defense. Olevao just landed. UCI now looks tired.
UH’s 13-8 lead has dwindled to 13-12. TO UH
some great defense from both sides as well as some sloppy play. UCI wins the point but Greeley puts down a kill. UH up 17-14
Greeley goes line. UH up 19-14. TO UCI
Any updates on UCD/UCSB?
yes wahine! now win this 5 set!
Olevao with her 20th kill. UH wins it 25-18
72. UCD beat UCSB in five sets according to the live stats.
Davis beats UCSB 3-2
UH up 3-0 in Set 5. TO UCI
Thanx, UCD is warming up at the right time
ref called a rotation violation but reversed it. so instead of 4-3 it was 5-2 with Greeley’s kill
UH up 8-5 at the changeover. Interestingly back to the student section which has very few left
Another block on Pickrell. UH up 10-5. TO UCI
UH wins 15-7
rise of na wahine! escape from the fire and a come from behind 5 set thriller!
Nice win! They definitely needed a tough road win like this.
Wait, did Magill really had 17 kills, is that right?
Wow, Hawaii had one foot in the grave and suddenly the ex-cadavers rose from the dead and surprised us all, treating us to a Halloween gift. It sure was high drama!
Wahine showed us both trick and treat tonight. Now i’m looking forward to CSUN stopping LBSU’s reign on the Bigwest tomorrow.
Real good to let Gianna and Kendra play quite a lot, in front of their families, i presume.
the trick, wahine pushed to near death.
the treat, wahine wasnt going to let irvine beat them once, not tonight. they rose from the grave and came back from behind dominating in a 5 set thriller!
achievements na wahine did tonight:
first win in the solid green uniform for this season (wahine heavy troopers)
first win in a 5 set.
first win in a come from behind 5 set including requiring a little push come to shove to survive – a high watermark.
additionally, tai had career kills, i think olivia too right?
Shoots! I got to eat my words. Earlier I made a statement that UH is not a 5 set team. Last time I will say that. Congratulations ladies on your come back.
I see you Mr. Whitecap 🙂
Wahine had 2 service aces and 13 service errors. Irvine had 3 aces and only 4 service errors.
The dinks by Irvine were killing them. But UH had 17 blocks to 10 .
85. magill had 17 kills. here’s the box
http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/boxscore.aspx?path=wvball&id=18555
91. the key was that Hawaii had 1 ace and 2 SEs after Set 3.
Some of the tip shots worked because they got deflected and UH defenders were caught going the other way. At least once Lee’s tip hit the top of the net and took an odd angle. Thought Hawaii finally began to dig Pickrell’s line shots that some could have been called throws.
Another key was that a lot of the UCI’s student section left after Set 3
Another was that after Set 3, UCI led in digs 71-59. Both teams finished with 104.
It seems that this team does not travel well, which would explain the slow starts. Arriving an extra day early should help them acclimate. I know the coaches prefer to arrive and play immediately but that is not working.
im surprised theres not much comment about the match. did everybody else gave up on na wahine or were they actually too preoccupied with trick or treating?
people our beloved wahine were beaten to the brink of death before they came back and dominated proving a certain jack fact that it still is ‘difficult to defeat the bows’ and still keep their record on the line unblemished that irvine is winless vs hawai’i.
another glorious victory for the lady bows. they can acknowledge a brave opponent. the high watermark came at set 3 irvine up 24-23, in which the bows endangered to be swept fought back with a little push comes to shove winning the set at 26-24 courtesy of olivia magill and shar tai manuolevao. then the rest of match was all in a days work for na wahine business as usual.
for anyone who missed the match here it is
http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2006129/
UCI was really up for this one and the Wahine looked like zombies in sets one and two. Don’t know what went on in the locker room at the break but a different team emerged. Maybe it was the Red Bull ?
I still think the way they travel needs tweaking. Can you imagine what it feels like for a 6 foot plus player to spend 5 hours in those cramped seats on a red-eye and they are expected to feel fresh as a daisy when they get into LA ?
They need to fly out of here at normal times so they get into LA earlier and maybe add a day on the front end. Studies done on jet lag say that it takes 3 days for every time zone change to recover.
97. them being zombies sure wasnt for halloween. and in set 1 miraculously they were ahead until the 20 point mark, then they essentially fell full asleep. it seemed to them that playing the game no longer became a priority for them. this was that way all the way close to match point in set 3 where uci was about to administer the coup de grace then is when na wahine fought back. obviously theres a problem with their travel, last time it had a profound effect, this time probably no different.
i wonder whos bright idea in the first place was to book tickets for a red eye?
97. I agree on the travel situation. I think they should have gone on Tuesday. Maybe its the additional expense and the girls missing classes is Shoji’s concern.
Can’t remember all the details but this travel subject recently came up with the football program and soccer programs .
The reporter at the SA also wrote a bachi pre match type article that planted a seed in their minds. Home town reporters should be careful about what they say in pre game articles.
101. No idea what you’re referring to about some seed being planted. or bachi. just doing my job. Not like the players read the paper when they travel.
98. not like they flew in the day of the game. They got in at 730 a.m., went to the hotel, slept, practiced, got plenty of sleep Thursday night.
The travel is what it is. some of it is cost, some of it is classes.
It’s not like this hasn’t been going on for 40 years. why the complaints now?
the one issue was when their flight was delayed a few weeks ago for 9 hour and turned into a red-eye.
Give UCI credit played well early and Hawaii didn’t. They were at home. It was an obnoxious crowd that the UH players said bothered them. The good thing for UH is the majority of the students left after Set 3.
94. they didn’t play immediately. They arrived Thursday morning, played Friday night.
97. and what is a normal time?
They are student athletes and basically on a work scholarship. They return more to the UH than they are given, scholarship-wise. Classes should be a priority.
Thanks, Cindy for all you do. Some posters will find fault no matter what. I am sure Dave is following many rules and guidelines we are not privy to. I hope he doesn’t acquiesce to some of the posters and find himself in the same boat as the basketball coach.
We should enjoy and support. You do. And I do.
Obviously “Jet lag” affects people differently. At home Wahine play very well, but away from home something is affecting them. The inconsistent play on the road occurs too often (3 times this year, 4 times last year) to be an aberration. The common factors involved with all the away games are travel and time acclimation. (I doubt that food is a factor but you never really know.)
103. i think ‘normal time’ referred to is more of traveling during the day. no more of that red eye nonsense because it has been costly (csun, the beach) and almost accosted the wahine in the irvine match.
