Cindy, by the look of the crowd, you should not have the problem of, to many people logging on. Surprising, looks like a small crowd, lot of empty seats.
lots of people still buying tickets.
my issues last night were the server going down, wi-fi ending after 2 hours.
UH playing very well early. It’s 11-8, TO USD
UH hitting 474. only error was Adolpho. USD hitting 143.
The Wahine Middles outplaying SD Middles, right now. Also, Wahine out hustling SD.
5. on another thread, someone asked about problems with the stats. Yes we did. that was a UH server problem.
Right now, SD has NO answer for Wahine Middles.
Hawaii up 20-11. TO USD. Kastl matching up well from the left side. stat tracker is off, says it’s 19-12.
We need to solve right front not reaching back for tip shots!!! If Uiato got hurt, aloha oe season!
UH wins 25-15. don’t think this will go more than 3. UH hit 472. USD 312. will update star when I get the printout.
9. Mearky, that is called, communication. The backrow player needs to yell that she has the tip, so the front row player does not reach back for the ball.
9-Mendoza was there as planned
yep, they covered the tip as they are supposed to. problem was 3 players crowded into a tight space on the right.
Vorster having a field day right now.
SD looks exhausted probably depleated after Texas match. Hell I will be too.
Okay they can’t touch our middles. I feel much better now. Start off set 2 strong.
I didnt know Ken is in USD staff
pretty funny. Uiato’s dump shot covered, came back. she took a full swing next time on the second ball. put it down. USD up 5-2. Hartong blocked a couple of times when they stacked it against her on the left.
ace makes it 7-2. TO UH.
Yikes. 2010 all over again.
The Wahine passing is letting them down, right now, giving Uiato just one option, Hartong.
Set 1 UH 19-2-36, taylor 2-1-6, Vorster 6-0-8, Kastl 0-0-1, Hartong 7-0-13, Adolpho 4-1-6, 0 aces, 1 S3, 13 digs. 0 blocks.
USD 12-2-32. Bonomi (setter) 1-0-1, Ferrari 2-0-3, Brown 4-05, Lozic 5-0-8, Hoekman 0-0-3, Hollins 0-2-9 (good job on the 2 best hitters), 14 digs 0 ace, 1 SE, 2 blocks
Long in for Kastl after she got blocked.
17. Ken who?
19 and what do you mean by 2010 all over again?
The Wahine took SD’s best shots, now the Wahine are counter punching.
22. I believe he is referring to the last time the Wahine played SD, the match went 5, with the Wahine winning.
22 when SD started off strong in set 2 after a fairly easy set 1. UH ends up dropping that set.
Cindy, where in the heck did Sarah Mendoza come from, was she recruited or just showed up one day at practice. She is really a good DS.
Vorster on the overpass. it’s 18-14. TO USD
thank you DF. believe that’s what he meant.
Hawaii has a tendency to start slow when coming over to this side. There’s also a funky air current that comes in. They are more comfortable when they are playing on the diamond head end.
The blonde guy wearing blue shirt on USD’s coaching staff
26. Mendoza saw UH when she came for the Ann Kang tournament but never got recruited by Hawaii so she went to Irvine Valley for two years and with the help of Tom Pestolasi, she got a chance to walk-on and then redshirted
Cindy, that is your side. You need to yell loudly at them to make sure they stay awake prior to Set 2. 🙂
interesting. Tuaniga in for Taylor. 2 blockers in front.
Arrerg UH getting out blocked
Long with a solo stuff. technically Vorster is RS. Hartong with another ace. it’s 22-18. TO USD
Interesting substitution by Shoji, Tuaniga in for Taylor.
Taylor back in, on the right.
Ali should be an AA this year.
Hartong called for a lift on a set attempt. probably shouldn’t have waved off Uiato. it’s 23-22. TO UH
Geeeez Jim Leahey is soooo confusing.
34. DF, no need to keep repeating what I’ve written. Yes, it was an interesting sub.
Hartong with her 12 kill. Mendoza serving for the set at 24-22.
USD’s backrow attack has helped them tie it at 24.
The Wahine stuck in a bad rotation, right now.
Brown with the kill. USD up 25-24. Brown with the kill wins it. 26-24
The got stuck with Uiato, Adolpho, and Long, in the front row. Uiato did not have a pass where she could get Hartong the ball.
UH got a little loose with their skills at the end. USD regrouped well after being down 22-18.Brown finally got some decent sets. She’s very athletic. 8-1-12
That LS2 position, when Olevao does not play, will be a problem if Kastl does not improve her play. Hoping Olevao rethinks the idea of sitting out on Sunday’s. The Wahine need her to be on the court.
Set 2 pretty ugly both sides. UH 12-7-45, hit 111. USD 16-7-47, 191.
Talor 5-2-15, Vorster 9-1-14, Kastl 0-3-4, Hartong 12-2-26, Adolpho 4-1-11, Long 0-0-6. 2 aces, 2 SEs. 38 digs, 14 by Longo 3 blocks
USD: besides Brown Lozic 9-2-23, Hoekman 4-1-13, Hollins 1-5-16. Ferrari 4-0-7. 1 ace, 3 SE 32 dgis, 13 by Oliveira, 8 blocks.
46. Olevao is not going to rethink her decision. they will only have one more Sunday match after today. And Shoji will not force her to play.
Hate seeing the team get sloppy in set 2.
Uh got outblocked in set 2 hence the close match. Everyone kept stacking up front.
29. thanks for answering that VBF. hard to keep up with the thread while I’m trying to pay attention to the match.
yes, courtesy of Pestolesi at IVC. UH likely will get Annie Mitchum in 2014 or 15 out of IVC. depending on when she gets her AA.
BIG QUESTION, what will Shoji do in Set 3 with the LS2 position?
They should be fine a long as they don’t get block.
The match up still favors UH.
Tuaniga in for vorster. at 7-1. Hartong with a kill 7-2
Now we will see what this team is made of, when things are not going their way, how much fight they have.
L2 is Long.
USD outplaying the Wahine, Big Time.
adolpho blocked. it’s 10-3. TO UH
Petrie outcoaching right now, come on dave and wahine!
What happenned to back row attacks from UH?
This is starting to remind me of the California match last year, but worse.
Get Mendoza back in
Goodman in on the right. hits long. Adolpho could have been called for the overreach. wasn’t. UH still way down. Its 14-6.
Maybe if i go to sleep, this nightmare will be over.
The Wahine truly miss Olevao, BIG TIME. Without Olevao, they only have Hartong, and Taylor, right now. Neither of the 2 LS2 players, Kastl or Long, doing anything.
Hawaii getting blitz.
It’ s just appalling how many tips go down on this team every season.
Hope Olevao realizes she is letting the team down by her decision not to play.
Higgins in for Uiato. Tuaniga and Long. Hartong and Lelepali. Longo Not a unit you often see.
Hartong is getting upset by the way the team is playing.
69. Inappropriate. Only you are being let down.
UH offense have become soooo slow
as I said a few weeks ago, Shoji was concerned about USD. Higgins with the ace. UH closes to 18-13.
Common, its still good
Having sooo many at just about the same skill level means that da coach is constantly left second guessing his lineup. A bit of double mindedness/indecisiveness if you will.
Long NEEDS to be sat for the entire season this 2013. She has many years left to play in later years. Her being in the mix only adds to the confusion..nothing personal against her, but she does need to be a key warm-ups/practice reserve ONLY.
Everybody’s been distracted by the coach’s record, I’d say. Wonder who’s responsible for that one?!
71. you are so off base. That is not Hartong at all.
DF LET IT GO. She has made her decision.
Pretty low set for Brown. into the net. UH has closed to 21-19. TO USD.
77. I am not off base, at all. Saw Hartong yelling at them, trying to wake them up to play Wahine Volleyball.
I think some of these posters need to chill and have some confidence that UH can come back. There will be ups and downs. This set has been a downer but UH is clawing back.
USD up 23-19. TO UH. someone said something about the offense being slower. It is only because Higgins is in setter, not Uiato.
Hartong the only bright spot in this 3rd set. Long????
USD has got Wahine’s LS sealed. Go to back row Middle and RS.
yelling encouragement is not the same as being upset.
Uiato back in, as is taylor
Ginger is not ready to play all the way, dave should
Put ashley back in.
Watching the team during the timeout. They don’t seem to be down, which is good. Some smiling. We’ll see if they can focus from here on out.
Long aced badly. USD wins 25-19.
Sure ashley got
Blocked three in a row but she is steady in the backrow and has more power, put her in coach!
UH going to have to do this the hard way. On to set 4.
They should put back Kastl in. Need her energy and firepower.
Absolutely no blocking…getting tipped to death…Now let’s see what UH is made of…
Wahine was too slow to respond to USD’s adjustments after set 1. They gave up too quick on their starting line up.
Cindy, if the Wahine lose this match, and it cost them like it did losing to California, then what. I still blame Olevao for her decision. If she felt so strongly go to BYU-Hawaii, or BYU-Provo, do not put your teammated in this kind of situation. The team had good chemistry with her playing, take her out, and this is what happens. Wish you would wake up.
In practice, Long has been better a better passer in the back row than Kastl.
Give credit to USD. once their serving settled down, they started playing better.
Set 4. Kastl is in the back row. Vorster back in as well.
Start blocking & picking up the tips…and capitalizing on USD’s miscues…
Taylor with 2 quick kills. Uiato serving, which i UH’s best rotation USD hits long. UH up 3-0
Robyn, not happy with the way the team is playing. Had a team meeting with all the players, in the tunnel, between Sets 3 & 4.
Put Mendoza back in for Kastl if need be. I agree Kastl brings more energy.
What happenned to UH block?
UH is not being smart these
Are tiny blockers they are being outblocked by!
some stats through Set 3. Uh hit 233. USD 364. 3 aces, 4 SEs. 50 digs, 15 from Oliveira. 11 blocks, 3 in Set 3
UH 4 aces, 3 SEs. 50 digs, 17 by Longo 3 blocks. 2 in Set2.
Hartong’s serving has helped UH take a 9-3 lead. TO USD. Hartong with 22 kills so far.
Girls look more focused. Must be the tunnel meeting after game 3. Good job.
I am wondering what Robyn, told the team in the tunnel, cause they definitely playing at another level in Set 4.
That’s more like it, the energy is back!
Somebody needs to let Uiato know how good shes doing. As her confidence level go down so as the number of sets to middle.
95. Just to be clear, the loss to Cal did not doom the Wahine. It was an overall weak schedule. If the Wahine had won the match, Cal’s horrible win-loss record would have still depressed UH’s RPI.
IF they lose the match … way too early to start thinking that USD likely will win its conference. We’ll see what happens. I still like UH’s chances in 5. USD is falling a part, like they did against Texas at points last night. Brown had a 1-on-1 vs. Kastl hit cross court very wide. 11-3.
I mean, even the Wahine body language, is so much more positive.
tickets 7,049. turnstile 5554.
the loss to Cal did hurt a lot. Shoji will tell you that. but the Big West being so down was the difference.
113. Not from an RPI perspective. It’s just a mathematical formula.
Again, no blocking & not capitalizing on USD’s miscues…
Hartong is tired. Not as steady in the back roll.
Why does Dave calls a TO always almost at the last minute?
USD has made a run, from 18-14 to 19-17. TO UH. Not UH’s best rotation with Hartong in the back row..
The stuck in that bad rotation again, with Adolpho, Uiato, and Kastl, in the front row. Same bad rotation that helped USD win Set 2.
The Wahine need to score points, when Hartong is in the front row.
but what do I know? Hartong out of the back row for her 26th kill. At this point UH just needs to sideout, not give up a run of points. Adolpho on the stepout it’s 21-18. Goodman in. Kawamura to serve
Kawamura’s serve coul not have been any easier
good idea by Uiato but she hit the tape on the dump, allowed for the Toreros to make a play. USD to within 21-20
Taylor with a kill. her 9th. UH up 23-21.
Re; Kawamura . she served lon last time. needed to get it in. UH serving for the set at 24-22. now 24-23
Kastl with the kill. UH wins 25-23
This 5th Set will be a barn burner.
Well the person quickly yanked out earlier is the one who closed it out.
It will go to which ever team wants it more. The Wahine need to DIG deep, literally.
Gutty win by the Wahine in the 4th set. Go Wahine!!!!
USD has nothing to loose literally if they loose to UH. Has a lot to gain though. UH needs this more.
Hartong doesn’t seem ready to lead this time, imo.
She’s good, but she’s lacking the ability to carry the team (thus motivating the rest of the girls to pick themselves up by the bootstraps).
This team needs to find itself one or two others to shoulder the burden.
wow, that’s not good. Hartong’s kill erased by an incorrect lineup card. USD with the point. but USD serves wide. 1-1
Uiato called for a lift on a pass way too tight to the net. USD up 7-4. TO UH.
Wow
UH is very tentative…not being as patient as USD…
Awful…
This is disappointing to see the team outplayed and outcoached.
USD up 12-8. TO UH. UH had closed to 9-8 but gave up points when Kastl unable to return a ball that was basically off the court, Hartong blocked out of the back row. and Hollins put down a kill.
Higgins in for Uiato and Goodman in. Hartong with a kill, her 29th, makes it 12-10. TO USD. Kastl remains serving.
This is embarassing!
They did not play well and shoji made questionable choices!
Toreros win 15-11. Hartong named the MVP of the tournament. be back in a bit.
I don’t know who to blame…the players or the refs? Tell me i am not alone. I felt the refs totally screwed Hawaii over quite a bit.
141 you read my mind. We were too hang up on Texas that USD coaches outcoached UH. Blocking- well USD did way better.
Unfortunately this may mean no hosting, since long beach didnt fare well this weekend.
UH was outplayed, outcoached, outblocked, out-everything…awful loss…USD played inspired volleyball, UH was tentative all night after set 1…oh well, anybody wanna bet that everyone on the mainland will make a bigger deal over this than their win over Texas?
Shoji blew it big time with an incorrect rotation. Not only the team lost two points, but it was set back psychologically, losing focus. So an upset is in the brewing and the blame falls squarely on Shoji’s shoulders. Even though the difference in points was more than two, the psychological setback took its toll. I’m reminded of the critical error he made back in 1999 playoffs in the fourth set against Texas-Tech where he put in Margaret Waukasausau, a freshman, and she made five errors in a row setting back UH and could never catch up. As a result, Hawaii couldn’t host its own Final Four. I don’t blame Tai at all here.
147, I don’t know if she could have helped tonight…I don’t think she’s a very strong blocker (no offense), and that’s what UH needed tonight…They could not block that slide to save their lives tonight…I think they just played a team that got better as the tournament went on & that really deserved to win tonight…
The team was unprepared for this match.
146. Would not surprise me if this loss cost them to be home in the 1st and 2nd round. Everyone knows the NCAA Committee holds any loss by the Wahine against them more then other teams. Not only that, but this loss will put them in an extremely tough region.
Definitely no offense to USD but they are not that talented, UH did not serve smart ( kept serving their libero) Their blocking made no adjustments, Uiato stopped going to the middles. Just frustrating all the way around, and it all starts at the top, not one of Shoji’s best matches.
Dedicated Fan, we differ on opinions here. You blame Tai Manu Oleva while I blame Shoji. You can’t hinge everything on one single player. The fifth set could have been ours if the team started with a lead, had the momentum and the psychological advantage. Shoji gave it away. He’s getting older and more disorganized.
147 why cap everything. i mean i don’t think she let them down, quit blaming her. they only thing i will say regarding all your shouting, is that i believe she would or could have made a difference big time. a loss is not always bad. it’s tough, and it sucks. but I rather have it happen early, rather than later. I frankly could care less what anyone says about what I have to say next…despite Hawaii shooting themselves in the foot time after time, you have to admit the refs for this match sucked. i swear it felt like Dan was purposely questioning everything of Hawaii in the fifth. if they didn’t take the point away in the beginning i think it would maybe been a different outcome, idk.
153, I disagree that UH had the momentum…Even though they did win the 4th set, they blew a big lead & let USD almost catch up…I think USD had the momentum going into the 5th…
The thing is while I respect Olevao’s decision to miss sunday practices/matches cause of her faith, it’s ONE match, can’t exceptions be made when it is very important for the team?? She is in the arena and the team could have used her out there, it doesn’t make sense to me but, whatever it’s done.
145.
Long Beach will bounce back this next weekend against Miami particularly.
They’ll beat UCLA at home; they’ll squeak into the Top 25 and lose to UH at home thereafter.
My guess is that the Beach then returns the favor to UH, in Manoa in November.
Someone said In VT that the problem with Hawaii the past decade is its inability to play consistently. Win when your supposed to and Loose when your supposed to. Obviously winning them all will always be the goal as it is for everyone so winning some tough match will always be a plus. but to loose when your suppossed to win im afraid has more weight.
As of late theyve upset top ranked teams but given up ridiculous matches as well which becomes an instant wash.
We can no longer brag about beating Texas.
158, I’m not so sure that UH will beat the Beach at the Pyramid…
160. the beach has their own problems I saw them play easlier today, USD would crush them in 3.
154. Lori Santi, and that other guy, mentioned, it is the Down Referee’s responsibility to make sure the teams are in their right positions, prior to the start of a Set. Hiranaka blew it BIG TIME. He should not be refereeing any more Wahine matches.
I agree with you for once, Hironaka is an awful ref and If he doesn’t ref anymore I will be glad.
Volleyball isn’t the most important thing in life; for some, their religion is more important. Didn’t Dave already know that Tai wouldn’t play on Sundays when he recruited her? Can’t hang this loss on Tai.
161, Interesting…we’ll see how both teams develop over the next few weeks…the Beach has been extremely inconsistent the past several years…Meanwhile, UH needs to work on blocking the slide & being more patient…I think they just got frustrated & then started to play safe…
The Wahine cannot afford to lose another match, they MUST beat UCLA NOW!!! Cannot leave anything up to the NCAA Committee. Unless, a lot of you people have very short memories. The NCAA Committee has never showed the Wahine any love. Give them any reason, and they will stick it to Dave and the Wahine.
Geez thi is really embarassing. USD was not that good. One thing theyre coaches did well is they stuck it out. Shoji corrupted his own line up after USD made the adjustments in set 2.
Oh yeah,
& Tai is ONE player..she could’ve made a difference but the entire team was in a funk tonight. She likely would have been so also.
Mita didn’t have the best match also. Yanking Kastl, because of the types of sets she was being asked to hit on the outside, KILLED the mojo they had going after the 1st set.
Vorster reminds me of Mary Robins and her ‘waffle’ hits she used to be so famous for back in the day. Why is she even being asked to play middle as she seemingly merely goes through the motions only??
—
Dave’s going to have a tough season. He’s going to have to really did down deep himself to keep the girls moving forward.
He had them going through two-a-days and have all hit the proverbial “wall” against USD.
Props to San Diego, however, they’ve been out to UH several times over the years and have played UH tough before.
..their coach/team reminds me sort of Cal Poly back in the day with Wilton. He could always get the most out of his players despite height/recruits/etc.
All of you so-called fans and naysayers blaming this player or that player or the refs or the coach just make me SICK! esp. that one blog of an idiot blaming Tai…I respect Tai and her family for their values as much as we all should respect her family and their values.. what a stupid remark by one blog saying Tai should have matriculated to BYU-Hawaii…SO STUPID AND A REFLECTION OF ONE’S IGNORANCE…..Hawaii lost just as much as Texas lost ….last year three of Texas lost was in the first six weeks and last year we lost to California but if Hawaii is any good, then they will suck it in and play like they can in the next several months….don’t talk about RPI or hosting a regional etc….just support the WAHINES…..not only in good times but in bad times like now and can you imagine how drained the wahines are now in the locker room and esp. for the next several dys. until their next match..QUIT THE BLAMING AND JUST LEND YOUR SUPPORT TO THE WAHINES BY ATTENDING THEIR GAMES AND SHOUTING AND CHEERING THEM ON TO VICTORY….one loss does not make the season…..GO WAHINES…
San Diego is a very good team that will be ranked in the top 25 next week. This loss will hurt Hawaii’s RPI, but I don’t think it will hurt as much as the loss to Cal last year, as Cal’s RPI was pretty bad, and I think San Diego will do well this year and probably have a pretty decent RPI. If Hawaii can win out, I think they will still have a good shot at hosting the first and second rounds in the NCAA tourney.
Dedicated Fan, the one thing I agree with you is that Wahines lost its chance to host the first few rounds of the playoffs. This will come back to haunt them unless they rise to the occasion. Also, you were too quick to expect them to make it to the Final Four and win it all. It was only one match. I know you’re bummed at Tai Manu-Oleva, but as hossana (169) said, we really should quit blaming and lend our support to the Wahines. Sorry, I live on a different island, so I can’t attend their matches. I was going to make a special trip if they hosted the first two rounds, but now that is moot since the NCAA won’t let them even if they rank in the top 16.
I REMEMBER A LOT OF PEOPLE CRYING MURDER, WHEN THE NCAA COMMITTEE SENT THE WAHINE TO WASHINGTON FOR THE 1ST AND 2ND ROUND. OR, WHEN THEY HAD TO PLAY USC HERE, ON THE 1ST DAY OF THE REGIONALS, INSTEAD OF THE REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
DF just lay off already, this is not Olevao’s fault nor any of the girls. They were all fighting it out hard tonight despite the fact.
171. THEY HAVE TO WIN OUT, THAT MEANS, BEATING UCLA THIS COMING WEEK, IS A MUST. IF THEY LOSE TO UCLA, THE WAHINE CAN FORGET ABOUT HOSTING THE 1ST AND 2ND ROUND. EVEN IF THE WIN OUT AFTER THAT, THEY WILL BE AT THE MERCY OF THE NCAA COMMITTEE, AND FROM PAST HISTORY, THAT IS NEVER A GOOD THING FOR THE WAHINE.
Too much doom and gloom here. The match is over, and I think the team will learn from this loss and move on. The season just started, anything can happen, and it’s fruitless to try to predict what will happen in December. Let’s support the team instead of trying to place blame.
Just back from the match. San Diego was impressive. The team has five fairly consistent and effective attackers. Very difficult to block them because of this offensive balance and their tremendous quickness. Hawaii unfortunately had only one reliable attacker, Hartong. The others were sometimes effective, sometimes not. Dedicatedfan obviously is an obsessive-compulsive personality. Once he/she gets hold of an idea, it is impossible to dislodge it. Makes this blog difficult to read sometimes. I don’t think Hawaii will face a team as good as San Diego until postseason. Lots of time for the Bows to get more experience under their belt, especially Taylor and the middles. Still look forward to a great year of volleyball. Veru entertaining crew. Hartong, herself, is worth the price of admission.
175. SINCE WHEN IS THERE AN “I” IN TEAM, ENOUGH SAID.
Olevao makes up missed Sunday practices on her OWN time. Don’t forget that Olevao has done A LOT for the team. She had to give up her redshirt for Croson’s mistakes. She did it for the TEAM.
171. Actually, the loss to SD has about the same impact as last year’s loss to Cal. It impacts the 25% RPI weighting related to UH’s W-L record. The 50% weighting relates to UH’s opponents’ RPI. Regardless of how UH performed against Cal, Cal’s poor W-L record would have still depressed UH’s RPI. There seems to be a view that losing to a bad team is worse for UH’s RPI than losing to a good team. This is a misconception. Any loss, regardless of whether to a good or bad team, is bad for UH. And a win over a bad team helps with the 25% factor but not with the 50% factor. At the end of the day, the best we can hope for is to have UH win as many matches as possible, and to have UH’s opponents win as many matches as possible. So we should cheer Texas, UTEP, SD, UCLA, etc. etc. except when they play UH.
DF just lay off Tai already. We get your frustration, but there is life outside of volleyball. Who are you to judge and critisize ones religion. It’s not just one player that defines a team. Hawaii just didn’t have it tonight and were outplayed and out coached.
Shut up, already…geez. It’s a pre-season match and it was a good match. San Diego played well and for anyone to say otherwise does not know volleyball. They dug everything they didn’t block and they played to their strength. They took us out of our game….you guys need to give credit to their players and their coaching staff. Yeah, we made some errors, but that is just what happens sometimes. It sucks we lost.
And stop blaming Tai…..that’s so childish.
And finally…I think this got lost in all the comments, but Cindy just confirmed that Annie Mitchum will most like be joining UH either next year or 2015!! That is awesome news in this night of a lost match 🙂
I’m leading the charge to ban DF again. He tried to post some positive posts and as soon as Hawaii loses a tough 5 gamer he is back to being Steve/Laura all over again. We don’t need to read you blaming people. You…dude/dudette….have some serious growing up to do.
180. OK, I think you lost me about half way through that, but I’ll take your word for it, lol. 😉
It’s not doom and gloom, it’s just reality. I want to see them play here in the regionals!!! This loss will hurt
that.
This was a big oppurtunity to notch a top 30 rpi win ( i think USD will be there winning the WCC) . I do not trust UCLA, Arizona, Wichita State and Creighton, or long Beach to have top 30 rpi’s at the end of the season with the way they have been looking so far.
If I were the other coaches in the BWC I would make sure the Wahine play on Sunday, instead of Saturday.
181. Trust me, people will cry and whine. It seems to be favorite pasttime every winter. However, its too much of a stretch to assume Olevao would have made a difference. Vorster, Taylor, Adolpho and Kastl all hit below their season averages, albeit we are talking about 2 prior matches. The more important issue is having the four players I mentioned play better, so that the entire team plays better. I also believe poor coaching was a big contributing factor, as others have mentioned. Losing set 2 after having a small lead is not what I would expect from a team that hopes to contend for a national championship. Finally, we don’t know where UH’s RPI will end up, so I am not about to let a loss this early in the season spell doom and gloom. If UH loses to UCLA, Arizona, Creighton, Wichita St. and/or LBSU, no one is going to remember this loss. We need to let the season play out before assuming worst case scenario.
184. Touche
According to Dave Shoji, he had other players before who were of the Mormon faith but played on Sunday. Olevao is the first that did not. That is because, Olevao is only thinking about herself, the other players were thinking about the Team, not wanting to let the Team down.
182. Agreed, great news on Mitchem, a 6’2″ MB. I hope she can keep her grades up.
I 2nd the ban. DF is way off based.
Just read that Mitchem was the #16 prepvolleyball ace during her senior year. Great get if it happens.
Interesting, when there’s a victory, there are few comments. But when there is an upset loss, we get over a hundred comments. Just imagine for a moment what would happen if this team lost to Arizona and Arizona won the tournament and Jane Croson won the tournament MVP award. I bet the bloggers would pour out their hate and bile toward Jane Croson, seeing what happened with Tai Manu Oleva tonight. For personal reasons, a loss to Arizona would be far more stinging than tonight’s loss. At least we didn’t lose to a former Wahine player tonight. Same applies to UCLA if Monica Stauber sets UCLA to a victory. Who will the bloggers blame then? I don’t wish to find out in either case. So it’s bed time now and I’ll say good night to everybody and happy dreams.
187. Sure it’s early but that’s what everyone said after the Cal lost last season, and that one loss kept them out of hosting. The schedule this year is very similar to last year’s.
Since the wahine do not have as many chances to pick up quality wins as The big 10, Big 12 and Pac 12 teams this loss hurts more than the Texas loss to UH hurts them. UH really needed to go undefeated to leave NO DOUBT. Now if I were Shoji I’d make sure to watch USC and UW matches closely all season.
187. Maverick, have you forgotten, the Wahine, last year, lost 2 matches in the pre-conference season. Guess where it got them. A 2nd round match with Washington, in Washington. Everyone was upset, even Shoji, himself. Well, guess what, if the Wahine do not win out, I would not be surprised if they are sent to some PAC-12 area, or even Texas.
They definite will not be playing at home, in the 1st and 2nd round.
Come on guys there is more than one person or one event in the match that you could point a finger at.
194. Thank you, Warriorfan.
Dedicated fan, you become so obsessed about one thing and then hammer and hammer and hammer the point away to satisfy yourself. Last year was Uiato, last night was Cindy either being or not being at the arena and how she wouldn’t just leave the arena when in fact, she did not have wi if connection and tonight it is Tai. Someone made mention of you finally being nice and making positive comments – that only lasted as long as the wahines are winning. Sad and now to get your point across, you start typing in caps. For a “dedicated fan”, you only watch on Tv and “coach” from the sidelines.
Hard loss for the Wahines. Hawaii wasn’t in their best game…most of their “hits”, or “spikes” looked sluggish after the first set….seemed tired. Dinks was another one that hurt us, like the beginning of last year. SD defensive had Dave wheeling and couldn’t find a way to put the ball down against them. I think Hawaii could have taken this match. 13 blocks to Hawaii 3. Stats looked pretty even except for this one area.
Keep Tai out of this loss. Why don’t you ask her how she feels. You want to make this loss weigh heavy on her because of her religion? Why don’t you blame Croson too. She was our #2 “go-to” hitter last year, and Dave gave her a lot of chances to make up her faults yet she left the club. Could she have done anything to help in tonight’s game if she was still here.
Though this was a hard loss, there are still opponents to analyze and plan for the rest of the season (which comes and ends quickly).
I know the Wahines can do better.
Predictable. Didn’t need a crystal ball to predict SOMEONE would blame Tai for the loss. Don’t need a crystal ball to predict SOMEONE won’t let it go. Will cry about it for days to come.
194 and 195. The reason why we didn’t host is because our RPI was too low, not even top 16. The reason why the RPI was so low was mostly due to a poor opponent W-L record. It is not clear that a win over Cal would have changed anything. I suggest reviewing the RPI formula before assuming that “one loss” keeps the wahine out of the top 16 and from hosting. The formula takes into account far more variables that either of you are.
Cocobean, I may talk about it, until I hear and read, all of you crying cause the Wahine are not playing at home, in the 1st and 2nd round. Having the NCAA Committee putting them up against a very strong 1st or 2nd round opponent, like last year. That is when I will laugh, and tell all of you, “I TOLD YOU SO”.
Steve you should apologize for using oxygen and contributing to global warming. You get one problem with her choice, go discuss it with her parents.
DF…. before you assume “She is just happy to be able to sit out this match” why don’t you ask her? How do you know she didn’t want to play? I’m sure it was a difficult decision. Maybe she isn’t doing it for “I” maybe she’s doing it for “God.” & I’ll save you the trouble, there is no “God” in team either… but guess what? There is no Dedicatedfan in team as well!
48. CL – Yes, only one regular season game, but NCAA rd 1 & 2 is scheduled for 12/5-12/8. 12/8 is a Sunday. So, do we just cross our fingers and hope we don’t have to play on that day? I think if there is even a chance we play on a Sunday once the NCAAs begin Dave needs to give Taylor, Kastl, Long, whoever may play on that Sunday more reps in practice and during games. He cannot give Olevao all the first team reps. I am not faulting her for her decision, but Dave needs to think about the entire team and what’s best for them.
Cindy. I really think you should join Stephen Tsai and ban Dedicatedfan/Steve/Laura. His vituperations against Tai Manu-Olevao is getting unbearable. Please!
206. Amen!
Sorry, I meant amen to Surfdad’s rainbowfan’s post.
I think exceptions should be made. It’s just one match, and it’s only four years of her life, I think she trusted her team mates could get it done but she was missed out there, Ginger, Nikki and Ashley just did not have good matches.
205. From what I understand the Wahine RPI was #17, last year. Even Shoji could not understand it. The BWC Team RPI’s seem to be about the same as last year. So it was extremely important that the Wahine go undefeated through their pre-conference matches. Once the Wahine get into conference play, their RPI will drop, even if they go undefeated in conference play. San Diego does not play the kind of schedule California plays, especially when it comes to Conference play. WCC is NO PAC-12.
DF, THIS IS NOT TAI’S FAULT. Dave always schedules these games on Sundays. He is not going to change it for one person. Obviously, volleyball is not Tai’s entire life, therefore she has the right to do what she needs to do. Dave probably knew she would not play on Sundays when he recruited her. She cannot just say she won’t play. She has lived in Hawaii her whole life. She knew they played on Sundays. Finally knowing Dave, he probably, as well he should, take the blame for the loss as he will say he did not prepare them as we’ll as he thought they did. Enough already. One loss does not make a season.
Lisa Strand-Maa even said she thinks its good that Kastl, Goodman, & Long get the chance to go in. She was pretty much saying she didn’t think it was “appropriate” to blame anyone.
will be starting a new thread in a bit
DF was banned by me earlier, made amends, allowed back on.
Bu you will notice his rants have been deleted.
So DEF/Steve/Steven/Laura, this is it for now.
Tired of the obsessive comments and the all caps rant.
apologize if it has thrown off the thread but have deleted anything that was out of line.
will probably have to go back and do more later but let me start a new thread
Dedicated Fan (204). Do you know her personally? Just ask her if you don’t. Better yet, ask the rest of the team how they feel. You could be right, or you could be wrong. Thing I noticed was that the team was not focused to their full effectiveness to win. And yes, damn the NCAA committee who probably serve like how a politician does…..favoritism to those with most cash gets the support.
207. You are agreeing with me, although you may not have realized it. Just another reminder, if San Diego plays a weaker schedule, and has a high winning percentage, then that favors UH more than the poor w-l record of SD’s opponents detracts from UH’s RPI. Review the RPI formula. It’s not that hard.
This was a team loss. To obsess about one player who did not play is very unproductive. SD played a good match, we are still a better team. This weekend we solved the right side problem and in my opinion we have found a defensive specialist in Sarah. This loss will make the girls work harder. Lets get beyond this game and start obsessing about next week. We have a long season ahead of us and we have the talent and coaching skills to take us far. We beat the number one team in the country, that should count for something.
“According to Dave Shoji, he had other players before who were of the Mormon faith but played on Sunday. Olevao is the first that did not. That is because, Olevao is only thinking about herself, the other players were thinking about the Team, not wanting to let the Team down.” – DF
Did you ever think that those other “Mormons” might not follow all of the Mormon ways? Did you ever think that Olevao might have a stronger belief in her Mormon faith than the others? It’s her choices and obviously Dave supports her.
215. And what if Olevao breaks her ankle and can’t play the rest of the season because she was selfish enough to go for a walk?
Moving on. see new thread. San Diego probably should have beaten Texas, too.
207. DF where did you see this year’s BW Team RPI’s?
217. You are too literal.
218. LOL, he didn’t. They haven’t yet come out.
Just look at their pre-conference schedules, they are not beating anyone that matters.
Wondering how the team feels about Olevao’s decision. Sure they will say they support her, but we will never know how some of them may really feel. It’s fine as long as they win, but what happens if they lose the next match they play on Sunday? Luckily it’s Riverside so nothing to worry about. NCAA tournament will be a different story though.
SOMEONE thinks he’s the only one who knows how often the Wahine has been screwed by the NCAA. Belittling a player’s belief will not help in this matter. It’s a personal decision. She can always change her mind.
SOMEONE shouldn’t mention the common knowlege that there are Mormons in the NFL and probalbly other professional sports. Most fans would prefer Tai plays but still understand where she is coming from.
SOMEONE shouldn’t take losses so personal and lash out at a player or call coaches names. The same SOMEONE GOT ALL HIS POSTS DELETED ON ANOTHER BLOG AFTER THE FOOTBALL TEAM LOST.
surferdad, please don’t get sucked in by this. The team respects Manu-Olevao’s decision.
the NCAA first-second round cannot be split up. it has to be on consecutive days. If Hawaii hosts, it will be Friday and Saturday. Can’t remember any time it has been played on a Sunday.
223. CL- I was just looking ahead and going by the posted schedule on Hawaii Athletics. If there is only one more Sunday like you say and the 1st and 2nd rounds will not be on Sunday, then I say No worry beef curry. It’s only one match.
Cindy, I guess you do not believe in Team Chemistry. My question is, what sport have you played. Ok, you paddle, here then, if you paddled competitively. You practice and paddle in events, with the same people. Then when it comes to the most important event, on of the paddlers says she cannot compete, and you have to put someone else in her spot, would it not throw off the cohesiveness of the unit, you all have developed, answer that, Cindy? Maybe, now you know where I am coming from.
DF, oh yay, now you can start attacking me again.
FYI
I have competed for over 20 years in regatta, did 3 Na Wahine O Ke Kai. 10 years of long distance races.
with 2 marathons among my running history.
4 years of varsity high basketball. Usually 3 sports a quarter very competitive IM at UCLA
so no, I don’t know where you’re coming from
227. CL, now you are getting sucked in. I suggest deleting and moving on. This is becoming highly non-productive, particularly for you.
maybe I just wanted to feel better about my athletic accomplishments. Ii was girl athlete of the year in HS too.
‘-)
and forgot to mention my four Catholic League championships, 2 each in volleyball and volley tennis (great sport for people who haven’t heard of it) in 7th and 8th grade.

228. LOL, well a belated congrats to you!!!
226. I was not attacking, just trying to point something out to you. I know you were and maybe still are, an outstanding paddler. What I was trying to point out. There must have been good CHEMISTRY with the other paddlers in your canoe, or whatever you called it. Take on person out of the CHEMISTRY, for personal reasons, what happens to that developed CHEMISTRY? Does it not go a little, to a lot, out of sync? Remember, CHEMISTRY, is the KEY WORD.
It is better many times for Hawaii to be 27-6 than 33-0 at season end .I have noticed some years going undefeated just led to the fans being heart broken not reaching the Final 4. They will be fine assuming they get past a much stronger Long Beach team. My observation on chemistry with Olevao is she seems to be the starter. As long there are not many preseason, regular season, and post season games on Sunday no problem. For Olevao to start this past Friday and Saturday, then make way for Kastl does mentally change team dynamics. Dave in my opinion should get his Sunday only player in earlier on Friday and Saturday matches to make the special exception rule not too obvious. If they are not much Sunday games they we should just ‘ get over it’. Remember, Chemistry involved not only players but coaching wisely with seeing the whole pictur
