For the second straight Saturday, the Hawaii men’s basketball team engaged in an officiated intrasquad scrimmage.

This time, it was in lovable old Klum Gym, and there were three scrimmage periods with different squads each time, as opposed to four periods the previous Saturday. Total scrimmage time went about 38 minutes of play.

Quincy Smith missed the session with a sore back and Brandon Jawato was not present for unspecified reasons, most likely a head injury he hasn’t yet fully recovered from.

UH coach Gib Arnold spoke highly of the efforts of both primary point guards in action, Roderick Bobbitt and Niko Filipovich.

“I thought we were a lot cleaner (from the previous week),” Arnold said. “Less turnovers. We ran our stuff a lot better, offensively. Defensively, I thought we got after it. We zoned a little bit this time. We’ve been working on our point zone, and so we threw that out there and I thought it looked at times really good. So we got better. We got better this week, for sure.”

Guard Garrett Nevels and forwards Isaac Fotu, Stefan Jankovic and Aaron Valdes also performed particularly well.

Here was the stat breakdown of the full roster, with their individual record in the three periods after their name. I didn’t take blocks this time, although there were only a few in total.

Brian, thank you for the stats. It’s great to see Fotu and Nevels playing so well, and some of the newcomers like Bobbit, Jankovic and Fleming starting to shine. I’m also impressed by how much Valdes and Thomas appear to have improved. Three concerns jump out at me from the numbers: Negus-Chan is struggling with his shooting touch, Jovanovic isn’t getting rebounds, and no one is consistently making assists but Filipovich. Of course it’s just one scrimmage and there’s a lot of practice time left for everyone to keep improving.

    Brian,
What’s going on with NWC. I was expecting him to be a stat stuffer with assists, rebounds, steals, points and three point shooting. Is he still shaking off the rust from a redshirt year?

Noticed too that Negus took 19 shots and whiffed big time. More than rust he was sidelined with a rib injury and just came back. That could be the problem. Anybody know?

The first FG stat includes both 2-point shots and 3-point shots. Negus was off from long distance on Saturday, but he’s had other days when he’s been lights out.

Brian: were you able to watch the Wahine last night? what were your thoughts about the team and especially the newcomers?

Connor, unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend the Wahine Green vs. White scrimmage last night. Jason Kaneshiro has transitioned over to cover women’s hoops for us, though I’ll still be helping here and there. However, having watched a few practices, I’ve made a few observations.
    >> Freshman Sarah Toeaina is poised to make an instant impact with the way she’s aggressively attacked in practices.
    >> Shawna Kuehu and Ashleigh Karaitiana will still be supplying much of the scoring for this team, kind of like how it was last season when Kamilah Jackson went out injured down the stretch.
    >> Destiny King was said recently by Coach Beeman to be in the lead for the starting point guard job, but I fully expect Morgan Mason to take that back over very early in the season, if not by the season opener.
    >> Shawlina Segovia is eager to finally play after sitting out last season, and I think she and Connie Morris will be taking the lead down low. Although Dalayna Sampton rebounded pretty well in the G&W scrimmage.
