The U.S. Women had never before won gold at any of the three major international volleyball events: World Championship, World Cup or Olympic Games.

AND for all those Kim Hill detractors

Kim Hill was named the tournament “Best Spiker” and “Most Valuable Player.” She led the U.S. in the decisive title match with 20 points, going 19 on 31 attempts with only one fault. She also had 13 digs and 25 excellent receptions on 39 attempts.

Alisha Glass was named the tourney’s “Best Setter.”

Hill was key for the US over the last few points of the Gold Medal match when the US overcame it’s deficit to China to rally and win. She really rose to the occasion and deserved the MVP award for her performance in the World Championship.

  3. Cubicle1126 October 13, 2014 1:18 pm

wow, congrats to the us team. a surprising result, given the poor performance just a few weeks ago by team usa at the world grand prix.

hill has come a long way in a short amount of time. good for her

Kudos to Karch and Team USA. Speed kills; Team USA’s implementation of speed sets reveals the potential of a fast offense. From setter to hitter, the faster the hitter gets the ball, the greater the odds of success (split blocks, 1 blocker, or no blocker at all). Speed (sets) was all it took for Hill to shine.

I know the position based awards are based on stats…..is the MVP award voted on?

  6. 'ohanaInBellingham October 13, 2014 5:57 pm

The team that took out Brazil deserves to win the Gold!

  7. High N Wide October 13, 2014 6:22 pm

6-4 on the left (kim hill) and 6-4 (karsta lowe) on the right… sounds like olympic gold down the line… thoughts?

  8. bowsfan October 13, 2014 7:29 pm

How was the fundraiser for sand volleyball.

  9. LC October 13, 2014 7:59 pm

Who is this volleyball coach who died ? KMBG reporting but says tune in at 10pm and nothing else.

  10. Jerry Campany October 13, 2014 8:17 pm

Sorry, just passing through and saw the comment. I heard Castle JV coach Nelly Yanagida had a heart attack on Friday and died today.

  11. LC October 13, 2014 8:21 pm

Thanks media just said beloved volleyball coach died tune in at 10.

  12. Geno Tamayo October 13, 2014 8:35 pm

  13. 3-Prong October 13, 2014 8:44 pm

  14. LC October 13, 2014 8:47 pm

    See 10 above

Truth be told, haven’t been following Team USA since Karch chose a roster without a Hawai’i player.

Checked the roster and saw two names I didn’t recognize: Kim Hall and Christa Dietzen. So nowI know Dietzen is the married name of Christa Harmotto, who was my choice for National POY when she was @ PSU. Still can’t understand why Kim Hall of Pepperdine isn’t ringing a bell with my old grey cells. Sand volleyball?

Congrats to Team USA! In the Rio Olympics, I would think Brazil would be the team to beat. But 2016 Summer Olympics is a long way off.

  16. Cindy Luis October 13, 2014 9:44 pm

    1. Coached by Karch. not the exact roster that was at the SSC.

    8. fundraiser Sunday, weather permitting. Was just doing interviews today and checking out the new courts on campus.

    10. Thank you Jerry. Was trying to find out since TV did a ‘tease’ about it.

  17. Cindy Luis October 13, 2014 9:46 pm

    15. Perhaps because her last name is Hill and not Hall?
The only player with Hawaii ties in the current pool that Karch could have chosen was Tamari Miyashiro.

  18. Cindy Luis October 13, 2014 9:52 pm

    7. lot of time between now and 2016 for the selections to be made.

  19. Cruisecontrol October 13, 2014 11:55 pm

    15. Kim Hill played with the Pepperdine team that lost twice to UH here in 2011, then returned to the SSC for the Honolulu Regional where they beat Kansas State, then lost to USC in the final. I don’t remember her being as good then as she is now 😉

  20. High N Wide October 14, 2014 4:05 am

    19. believe kim was a non-descript ‘middle’ at the time. i don’t think she blossomed as an OH until after graduation.

  21. LC October 14, 2014 5:05 am

How many times have we heard this” all positions are up for grabs” and nothing changes ? In the real world you get fired for poor performance.

The biggest problem is that they get their scholarships and think that they are safe. It’s all about goofing off, going to the beach and doing just enough in school or on the playing field to keep coach and mommy and daddy happy. You can almost tell which ones care and which ones don’t by how they act.

It wasn’t 30 minutes after they arrived back in Honolulu and right back on social media talking about the same old silly high school stuff and no signs of, gee we really stunk it up this weekend or this one yesterday , “No practice means catch up on tanning time.”

Is this just a UH problem,no it isn’t this is something you find in many programs. After getting back to New Mexico their head coach said..I took them to this tournament because of the tough competition hoping it would make them better but instead they decided to make it a vacation.

They have this attitude today that if you don’t like it I’ll transfer.

  22. tongo October 14, 2014 7:01 am

Kim Hill was 2x AA indoor. She didn’t have an overpowering game but she was very skilled for a 6’4″ player who began her career in the middle and then move to the pins playing all six rotation. So very happy for her. Saw her play at Pepperdine when they upset UCLA. It appears that she has found her game.

  23. tongo October 14, 2014 7:51 am

    21. In one of Nikki T. first interview back, she said it will probably take until Nov. for the team to get consistent. And yes, much more than other years, UH is organically growing the players and it will take time.

You not saying that our employers should fire us because we are on this volleyball blog instead of talking work 24×7, are you?

  24. todde October 14, 2014 8:58 am

21 Get a Life! What are you doing looking at the girls social media.
23 Good one. “talking work 24×7, are you? ha, ha

  25. LC October 14, 2014 9:38 am

    24) LOL because I can, because all of us can.You can even look at mine, anyone can look at mine. If they didn’t want anyone looking then they wouldn’t have them . 🙂

  26. Cubicle1126 October 14, 2014 9:48 am

i love that LC tries to come off as all no-nonsense and “i don’t give a damn” … but clearly he/she cares a great deal. anyone who spends that much time online, poring over individual players’ social media, as well as the various outlets for news on teams/players/recruits. that’s dedication right there!

  27. LC October 14, 2014 9:49 am

24 But you probably approve of the fact that the two talking heads on OC 16 read their social media accounts and if you didn’t know about that then I guess you don’t watch any matches or replays on tv . 😉

  28. tongo October 14, 2014 10:33 am

LC You do know that I was just having a little fun. I actually appreciate and respect your postings. Perhaps, we should ask Cindy to give us a “day pass” to show our employers so that we can continue to post on her blog during working hours.

  29. Cindy Luis October 14, 2014 11:31 am

    21. They’re young college students. They’re on social media. (as you are obviously) They have a day off and they’re going to enjoy it. Is there anything wrong with that?
What you expecting? Some sort of confessional and asking for penance and absolution? They know they played horribly. Nothing they can do about it on their DAY OFF.

  30. LC October 14, 2014 12:51 pm

    29 yes i do.

  31. Moloka'i Ho'i October 14, 2014 1:18 pm

    “DAY OFF”?

What’s going on this Saturday on the Friendly Isle?

  32. wildcard October 14, 2014 2:22 pm

    21. that sounds like a bunch of hehe haha, thats funny.

complains about what in heck to do about volleyball on everybodys day off (i actually forgot about columbus day being a federal holiday). just like cindy said in #29 “Nothing they can do about it on their DAY OFF.” (and reportedly the entire uh campus and just about everywhere else was empty)

i made a similar comment in the other blog about ‘in other words, all starters are relieved until further notice.’ that was a joke. if that was for real, think about how counterproductive that would be than any real improvement going forward?

  33. Cindy Luis October 14, 2014 10:31 pm

    31. clinic and scrimmage. see the next thread.
    32. They had school Monday. I was on campus. It was a federal holiday, not state.
