MPSF semifinals. both go 5
sorry, out at OIA boys tournament. Kaiser rallies past previously undefeated Kalaheo in 5.
had a quick chat with Cougar coach Jon Stanley, Clay’s dad. Hadn’t seen him in a while.
anyway, in Provo….
No. 1 BYU def. No. 4 UCLA 23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24, 15-10
No. 3 Long Beach State def. UC Irvine 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 25-14, 22-20
I think that the 49ers will get the at-large if they don’t beat BYU in the final Saturday.

Cindy, how did the guy, playing for Kalaheo, who will be playing for the Warriors, do?
Darn was hoping Luke Owens and Kalaheo would win the OIA.
Pretty impressive how Kalaheo has done regardless without Nainoa Frank.
@dedicatedfan – referring to MB Luke Owens, he was held quiet offensively, but was in on six or seven blocks.
@warriorfan – Kalaheo still can win the OIA. they have to beat Moanalua on Tuesday in an elimination match and then have to beat Kaiser twice (Thursday, Saturday) to win the OIA title. they are more balanced without Frank, but it would be fun to watch this team with him on the court
With Frank Kalaheo could go 6’6 (Kainoa Frank) & 6’7″ (Luke Owens) in the middle and 6’4″- 6’3″ on the outside if it’s Zuttermiester and Harrison at the pins. Frank is walking around pretty good but I doubt he’s ready to play yet.
On Tuesday, against McKinley, Luke Owens played all 6 rotations since Kalaheo’s starting Libero didn’t suit up. The 2nd string lib only took out one middle allowing Owens to play all 6 rotations. I was very impressed with his passing, McKinley served tough but Owens passed dimes. UH will be getting a great one, even if he is being recruited as a MB it’s good to know that he has that skill set.
TW, was at the Kalaheo match Thursday. He’s not ready to play. And has been out with an ACL since the last game of the football season. So you won’t be seeing him this volleyball season.
3 & 5. thanks Tiffers and WaWa. Owens was very quiet offensively but had 6 blocks I think
And, as pointed out, the Mustangs can still win the OIA. But, as their coach said, they’ll have to do it the hard way Double elimination.
Tuesday: beat Moanalua.
Thursday: beat Kaiser
Saturday: beat Kaiser again.
Thanks for the news, will be hoping Kalaheo can pull it off.
Glad to hear that Owens can pass and play defense , always a fan of middles that are well rounded like Taylor Averill.
Saw on twitter that UH picked up a commitment from Mikayla Tucker in sand volleyball for next year. She is really good and represented the US in the youth world championships with partner Alexa Strange in 2011.
Scott Wong and the rest of the beach coaches are kicking butt in recruiting.
I saw on twitter also that a girl from Huntington Beach HS is here but don’t know if she’s beach or indoor and I forgot her name also.
#10 LC: player from HB High committed to UH Sand Volleyball a couple days ago. SW and his coaches are putting together a great roster for next season!!
Is it Kendra Koelsch who was just on her visit per volleytalk?
At this point I won’t be surprised if Ali, Tai and Ashley are the only indoor players to make the beach roster next year they will be that deep.
Seems like recruiting is all about sand.
well considering 2013 recruiting for indoor was done like over a year ago, im not surprised.
LC, 2013 indoor has been done. Early signing for indoor 2014 is in November.
13. Wong said from the beginning he wanted have separate teams. At enough so they aren’t stressing most of the indoor squad.. Much depends on how quickly UH adds more scholarships for sand. Believe the max is 6 and think they offered 3 this season. .
All’s quiet on the criticism of SW’s recruiting skills front.
When’s the last time UH got an international player?? Looks like UH is interested in Jaja Santiago 6’4 MB from the Philippines. Other top schools interested as well. International players have been good to Hawai’i….
NVM I guess she plans on staying in the PI. Hmm. It really is a dry spell for UH when it comes to International players.
The best of the 2014 class was gone many moons ago and other coaches have been snagging the best of 2015 for months now.Yes they can still change their minds before they sign but not many do.
Cant tell for sure if the best are all gone, not many considered Hartong one of the best of the 2010 class back then.
The MPSF final b/w BYU and LBSU will be on BYU-TV today at 3pm. Ch 374 on DirecTV.
#12 WF: yes! It’s Kendra from HB High. She already knows a few of the UH Sand players and will be a good fit for the team.
Great pickup, she sounds like she could help the indoor team as well though, especially as a right side hitter. Maybe her fifth year she can play indoor for the wahine.
25. The current NCAA rules as far as eligibility on sand and indoors is if you’re on a sand scholarship, you can’t play indoors for the season that you’re on a sand scholie and the following indoor season. So she would have to not be on a sand scholie her senior year to qualify to play indoors in the Fall of her fifth year.
