5 Warriors named MPSF All-Academic
From UH today:
Five members of the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team were selected to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic team announced by the conference office.
Middle blocker Taylor Averill and opposite Johann Timmer each earned their third MPSF all-academic award while outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic, setter Joby Ramos, and libero Kolby Kanetake were first-year recipients.
Averill, a junior from San Jose, Calif., was a first-team AVCA All-American and first-team all-MPSF selection who led the nation in hitting percentage (.477) and ranked eighth in blocking (1.22 per set). Timmer, a senior from Auckland, New Zealand, finished his three-year career by appearing in all 27 matches as a reserve outside hitter and serving specialist in 2014.
Zarkovic, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, ranked second on the team in kills (3.00 per set) and third in digs (1.19) and service aces (16). Ramos, a senior from Honolulu, started all 27 matches at setter and averaged 10.39 assists and 1.74 digs per set. Kanetake, a sophomore from Honolulu, led the team with a 2.08 digs per set average which ranked 11th in the MPSF.
Only Stanford (9), UC San Diego (8), and BYU (6) had more all-academic honorees than Hawai‘i.
The criteria included a 3.0 grade point average or better, at least a sophomore standing academically, have completed one full academic year and must have played in 50 percent or more of the team’s matches.
Congrats to Kekoa Pukahi, the only setter on the AVCA HS all american first team. He looks a legit 6′ 6 and very athletic, it will be nice to have two 6’5 + and very athletic setters to compete for the job for once.

Probably closer to 6’4″.
Nope, he’s grown, and he nearly touches 11 feet, that’s crazy for a setter. Don’t think UH has ever had a setter that athletic before.

For reference, standing next to 6′ 5 former UCLA all american Garett Muagututia.

next to 6′ 7 teammate number 6, Brad Gretsch
His high school and current club (Coast) lists him at 6’4″. I’ll go with that. where u got 6’6″ IDK. I thought Brian Beckwith was pretty athletic. Jennings Franciskovic touches 11’4.
compromise 6’5″. lol. Doesn’t really matter. Either way, still on the taller side at setter for UH in recent history with 6’0 Ramos, 6’3 Carney, 6’2 Zemljak, 6’0 Morehouse, 6’1 Lile. Biscaro was a decent size but to wasn’t impressive.
Pictures as a reference is not accurate especially when know one is actually standing up straight with perfect posture when taking a photo.
Don’t really want to argue about height. I was just going off listings from high school and club and other outlets. 6’4″ maybe 6’5″ but No where does it say he’s 6’6″. Well, besides from you that is.
Mm. Beckwith, he was a good one. I remember him being apart of the national team but that was a while ago. What’s he up to now days?
Brian coaches boys volleyball at Saint Louis. Married to Juliana Sanders.
Agree he was a very athletic 6-6.
1. thanks for the link on Pukahi, UH commit
However, you kind of have to question the impartiality of the committee when several members (coaches) ended up with multiple players from their own team out of the 20.
cindy — also, in order for players to be eligible, their coaches have to be avca members.
that said, this is still a nice accolade for these players. congrats to them all! regardless of the criteria, they would not be honored in this way if they weren’t a quality recruit.
I know (about the AVCA membership requirement ). just commenting on the makeup of the committee.
Agree that all 20 are deserving.
There are so many deserving Hawaii players. Sad if their coaches don’t belong to the AVCA, meaning their players aren’t considered for the All-America team
Kekoa Pukahi is a true 6’5″, and may still be growing. Very athletic, and all of the players on the AVCA list are deserving! Congrats to them all! And Jennngs was All American for outside hitter, not setter. Excited to see how UH is next season!
Let me be the first to congratulate these scholar athletes. Well done.
