Dixon: Riley is “my mentor in a lot of ways”
Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon, the 2009 Naismith National Coach of the Year, is back in Hawai‘i, visiting his in-laws (his wife Jackie was raised on O‘ahu) and playing golf with former UH head coach Riley Wallace. Dixon had two stints as an assistant under Wallace.
After a round of golf at Waikele yesterday, Dixon answered a few questions from the Warrior Beat.
On Riley Wallace: “He’s my mentor in a lot of ways. There’s a lot more than Xs and Os. He’s a great coach. His longevity, and what he did at UH, speaks more about the person than the coach. That was something I recognized when I was here, and I still recognize it.”
On UH’s influence: “We have some of the concepts of (the G-game offense). Any time you’ve been around somebody who has been successful, you incorporate (strategies). Maybe not identical, but some pieces of it.”
On Pittsburgh: “Pittsburgh is such a great sports town, and it’s a great city. It has everything. But it’s manageable. No traffic. Low crime. Good schools. And they’re all Steeler fans. I didn’t really have (an NFL) team when I moved there. Being an L.A. guy, you can’t keep a football team. It was easy for me to become a Steeler fan.”
On staying at Pitt: “There was a lot of talk, and different things happened. The last eight years, we’ve been as good as anybody. I didn’t really see a reason to leave. This is my 11th year there.”
On Pittsburgh’s weather: “Summers are perfect, and spring is nice. The winters are a little colder than I’m used to, but I’m in the gym in season. I wouldn’t know what it was like otherwise.”
On his annual visits to Hawai‘i: “We stay with my in-laws when we come here. My wife stays here five, six weeks. I stay a week. We come back every year. Her family is here. She grew up here. I’ve always loved Hawai‘i. What better place to visit your in-laws?”

No Legoland for me today…I’m taking the girls to their sports class this morning and then we are throwing Faith’s birthday party this evening. Tomorrow we’re using our final bring-a-friend coupons to take Faith’s best friend and her family to Legoland. We go a lot more often when we can bring friends for free! chawan_cut used one of these coupons and Ronnie and her sons used them in the past–if any Tsaikos had mentioned being in San Diego over the past month I would have offered to take them for free.
I’ll also be working whenever I can…for example, this morning I already got a couple of documents done with a big defense contractor. I have 2 deadlines on Tuesday so I’ll just work around the schedule and skimp on sleep. Lori actually asked me if I needed to skip Faith’s birthday party but I’d never do that!
For the transfer rule, Smith’s clock ran the entire time he was in Arizona. I read reports that he went through Spring Practice with their team, but even if he wasn’t part of their football team his clock would still run.
So, his clock has run for 2 years. He will have to sit out a year if he transfers to another D-IA school. So, best case he’ll have 2 years to play 2. There is no appeal for this–he doesn’t qualify for the medical hardship.

Off to an Energy Conference in a couple of minutes – too bad it’s not applicable to humans since I seem to run out of “juice” earlier and more often these days than I used to – even though STUFF still happens at the same speed.
Back to sports: Missed Thursday’s meeting of the Stadium Authority. Between road construction on Nimitz and accidentally getting off the freeway at the Hickam exit instead of the Arizona Memorial exit got me to the Stadium gate about 20 minutes late so I decided to wait to read about plans to work with UH-Manoa to reduce costs & increase revenues in the Honolulu Advertiser.
Still waiting on that. Stephen – can you find out what’s going on? Mahalo.
Have been doing some reading up on the upcoming 2009 NFL season. I don’t think I’ve seen any article rating the Redskins higher than 24th in the league. What’s happening?
DrDoc and I decided to buy season tickets for all four UH
arena sports this coming season in addition to football & baseball rather than go to Las Vegas. However, if anyone planning to go is also planning to do some gambling, perhaps we can give you a few dollars to bet on our behalf.

😕 How do you rate the relative importance of holding onto the ball and suffering a possible sack, vs. dumping the ball and getting an incompletion?
😕 It seems that JC student athletes are at a severe disadvantage entering the program if they don’t have their AA and credentials in order arrive early (to enter school at the beginning of Summer, or even better – Spring semester). Do you have any advice for future JC Warriors?
😕 As returning starting QB, do you see yourself as a team leader and have you assumed that responsibility? The reports I’ve read seem to indicate that you have. That’s great!

My wife rubbed flouride on our kids gums when they were babies. She followed up with a prescribed flouride program from her doc. By the time the kids reached 21, not one cavity! Not all ‘experts’ subscribe to that plan, but it certainly worked for us.
7 children, times the number of cavities each could have before age 18 could be a serious blow to the family budget. Good that you have a dental health care plan in place. Plus – they can all help McGruff, “Take A Bite Outta Crime!”

We get to “mark” vehicles making bonehead/stoopid maneuvers on the road. After a vehicle gets about 6 marks, it get’s towed and the driver loses privileges for 6 months. IMHO 🙄
ST ~ I do hope you have Manti Teo on as a guest. The boy wonder has not been under as much scrutiny as one would hope. There are a few incidents that he has been ‘accused’ of that have been very neatly swept aside by various officials. They certainly question his character, or lack thereof.
It would be interesting to hear what he has to say about his visits to BYU, and SC. Like they say, “the truth shall set you free!”

Looking for fuud suggestions in Vegas?
Wow, where to start?
I’ve heard the rage now is for “all day pricing” at some of the buffets; pay once and you can eat all day!
In this off season I’m hoping the Warrior coaching staff are having a meeting of the minds, where Coach Mack has conceded, “we have to shore up some of the things we didn’t do right from last year”.
My gut reaction is that little by little they’re coming around.
We’ve already have seen changes to the coaching of the OL and special teams, but the area that concerns me is how we spot the other team a lot of penalty yards.
In 14 games the Warriors accumulated just under 1100 penalty yards and averaged near 9 penalties a game.
And, I’m thinking, if the boys concentrated a little better they can improve in this area. It’s understandable to play hard and tough, but it’s not understandable to be out of control and playing selfishly, like witnessing one of our players flagrantly getting the last shove in. And then the team being flagged for 15 yards.
We read how the players are instilling themselves with a good work ethic and are training hard. And I hope, likewise, the coaching staff are looking at ways, of improving their game, too. And self examining if their approach to disciplining the players needs to be enhanced or changed.
Last year as a form of disciplining the players we read that the guilty players were required to do full length bear crawls while under the observation of their cheering team mates. Does this lead to being a deterrent, where the infamous players are almost made out to be like headliners. And where they’re named and their quotes are written up in blogs and the newspaper.
When I read about this last year (about players doing bear crawls) my silent reaction was that this was stupid. And I agreed with what other posters, here, wrote saying that Coach Mack should instead should be sidelining the players. To his credit he did.
Others wrote that the players should be suspended, which are all good debates as being deterrents as repeating the same mistake.
As far as making the offending players doing bear crawls what I would change this year is that I’d make the whole team suffers along with the player. Trust me this is a deterrent. You would have to understand the military theory on this–where the bad actions of a few and everyone pays for it philosophy works. For Coach Mack finding a course of discipline where the offending players feel the peer pressure from the team mates is the answer.

Actually the sonicare just does too good a job, so I bought a OralB pulsonic for $59 at Walmart last month and replacement brushes for $20 or so. Three days later, I checked ebay and bought another pulsonic for my son at $29 (shipping included) and 2x the replacement brushes (6 in all) for $12.00.
At least an average of the prices makes it a good deal. And if none of us get cavities, big savings, eh? Might be able to get me more Warrior stuff.

I have to agree. Colt was a coaches dream because he got along with every one on the team.He backed up his leadership with his play. And by doing so he broke up the factions on the team. His presence had a lot to do with the filtering out of the bad attitudes and the factions. And, thus, players adhered to what you wrote, “the unity of a team that makes it greater than the sum of its parts.” This is true, and attributed with a person like Colt on the team. His female counterpart would be Wahine volleyballer Heather Bown. For she was similar to Colt-no ego, and one to extend praise to her team mates, too. In ‘Nam we used the high speed ‘burst’ unit to send & receive IMC. Same 5 letter code groups, 11 line msg format, but sent out in very quick micro burst of speed over HF radio. This entire blog page could be sent in a flash of dits and dahs. Rec end broke it down on there end and got good copy. Ranger/SF/and LRRP teams used ’em most. I used a template to send pre-recorded msgs like “HELP!…SEND THE ENTIRE USAF & PUFF…NOW!”

Last year, the Warriors were pitiful in committing penalties. In the Fresno State game, UH committed 12 penalties to Fresno State’s zero. It was the most unbelievable statistic of the year. Penalties are the result of lack to concentration, frustration, problems w/ technique, and retaliation. It is mostly mental as opposed to physical. It is a selfish act that hurts the team most of the time. In some instances, there are such things as a good penalty. It all comes down to being smart, level headed, and keeping their composure. In other words, these college kids are supposed to learn and you would think smart enough to know what is good for the team. I hope the coaches do a good job and the players execute a lot better this year. After all, there are a lot of lessons we can learn from last year. The ones that bug me the most are personal fouls, holding, and false starts.

You are right. The officiating in that road Fresno game last season was obscene. 😎
Not withstanding that, the Warriors commited a ton of bad penalties in the 2008 season.
After watching the Warriors through the spring, as an observer I can guarantee:
A significant drop in sacks and penalties committed by the offensive line.
12 penalties to zero is crazy, but if you want to use the Fresno game as an example, you do have to look at the officiating too. It’s not an excuse, but fact.
Coach Mack knows there is a stigma on Hawaii football amongst the Zebra community, he’s going to have to fight this as long as he is at Manoa.
While I fully believe our discipline will be improved this season, we’ll have to continue to walk on egg shells no matter what.

A group of Tsaikos did indeed rellocate activities away from the usual playhouse and have the VIP Room to themselves.
Alas, I was a late arrival and missed some of them by mere minutes ( I suppose) due to prior commitments.
When last seen Rob25 and Koakane were locked in a dart match to determine gender superiority.
Home safe and sound after meeting up with a room full of *VIP* Tsaiko’s. We were served like we were Royalty for about 4 hrs. Then they discovered Koakane’s true identity, and summarily asked us to vacate the room. I was wondering how long it would take them to figure out that he was not Don Ho’s brother Ron.
We were thrown into the main lounge where one can easily understand why this generation has no chance of surviving on a peaceful planet. If I were standing next to a 747 taking off or a dragster doing a burn out, I could still hear a pin drop…but not in this room.
After awhile it was just too noisy for words. Time to surrender. Rob25 was still locked in mortal dart combat with Koakane, when Ralph and I decided to save our hearing and leave.
A-Joe had just arrived to take over my shift. James was busy saying, Helloooo, how youuuu? to these 2 cutie pie waitresses.
