No deal
The UH compliance officer has ruled that it is against NCAA rules for the players to have a gentleman’s bet on the Leilehua-Kahuku game.
Bryant Moniz was supposed to have worn a Kahuku shirt because his alma mater lost in the OIA championship game.
Not sure why it’s improper to have a gentleman’s bet. No money was exchanged. No new shirts were purchased. The Kahuku players were going to make Moniz wear one of their old shirts. It would be like exchanging shirts. Puzzling.
I guess this means Sailor Blue won’t have to wear an Army shirt after UH beats Navy in a few weeks.

Happy birthday to Mrs. Bulla. Jaegermeisters all around.
In response to a statement made in the previous blog, the Warriors did time the snap-to-punt times during training camp. They still do. There’s actually a student manager who’s in charge of recording the data. The times were very good in that area.
What’s more, practice videos are reviewed. You can digitally time snaps, plays, etc., from the videos, providing a better reading. The coaches watch a lot of video.
Maybe it’s a coincidence, but every time Michael Wadsworth blocks a kick (or two) in practice, a UH kick is blocked in the ensuing game. Hmmm. Wadsworth had a couple of blocks during Fresno week. And he had one last Thursday.
Too bad Wadsworth and Aulolo Tonga are going on missions next year. They’ve really made some progress this year. And they’ve become good special-team players.
Let’s say, UH doesn’t add anybody to recruiting. Is this next year’s o-line?
LT: Brett Leonard
LG: Laupepa Letuli
C: Matagisila Lefiti
RG: Brysen Ginlack
RT: Austin Hansen/Adrian Thomas
And the rest of the offense would look something like this:
LWO: Rodney Bradley
LSB: Greg Salas
RSB: Kealoha Pilares
RWO: Jovonte Taylor/Malcolm Lane
RB: Alex Green, Chizzy Dimude, Jon Lister.
And the defense would be something like this:
LE: Liko Satele/Elliott Purcell
LT: Vaughn Meatoga
RT: Kaniela Tuipulotu
RE: Paipai Falemalu
OLB: Aaron Brown
MLB: Brashton Satele
OLB: Corey Paredes
LCB: Lametrius Davis
SS: Spencer Smith
FS: Mana Silva
RCB: Jeramy Bryant

Top 10.
Hey, there, Ike. T’was nice to put a face to the name.
g’morn ST, that team above looks like a contender…Imua warriors.
ST,
Good morning. Catching up on my homework. Reading WB.
no chance of moving hansen inside to guard?
pilares should be a hybrid RB/slot. then we can get blount on the field and get him some touches too. run some 5-wide too.
Kazz,
Will help out with anything when it comes to UH sports. I can’t promise
but will do my best. I am not one of the inner circle person. ST is.
Kazz,
Forgot to tell you something at the T-gate. 3 Wahine VB recruits at the
game on Senior night. Waber only one not present. Did you see them?
Wed. is early signing day.
Esme and Midori 7 out.
They probably can move Hansen inside. I think they like those bruising guards for the Tampa runs (long traps).
yeah i would love see hansen demolishing guys when he pulls.
Good morning Tsaikos.
Great Morning All!
Looking forward to the Warrior Beat Show today.
That starting line-up for next season looks pretty good….esp. that BIG addition in the middle of the DL!
Hope Coach Mack can focus to recruiting more linemen and linebackers this year. Our defense ranks near the bottom in most categories; and this is for our own WAC conference!!!
ST, i like the forecast for next yr and it looks good. personally, i think George D-L will be the starting mlb and the moose will also be one of the lb. imho, the moose should be the starting mlb this year.
Good Morning Tsaikos!
It’s beautiful around the Ala Moana area.
There’s a storm coming???
I found this article on another forum and it was quite interesting. Many people say that JJ went to SMU for the money and point to the $2 million annual salary. However, the *facts* are that the $2 million that the boosters are giving each year is for JJ’s salary *and* money to increase the pay for the assistant football coaches.
JJ’s actual salary at SMU is $1.2 million per year, so $800k was used to increase the assistant coaches salary…JJ always wanted more money for the assistants at UH and never got it. The $1.2 million actually includes the cost of benefits, so JJ’s actual salary is much, much less. A standard estimate could have the salary around $800k to $850k and the rest for benefits.
So, JJ made *less* money last year than Mac. Even after Mac’s salary cut and 1-month suspension without pay, JJ is probably making less money than Mac this year. Unless I’m wrong and Mac’s salary is before benefits…but we’ve always read that Mac’s entire salary counts towards retirements benefits for the state of Hawaii, which seems to indicate that benefits are in addition to his salary.
ST reported that UH offered JJ a $1.7 million salary to stay at UH but UH failed to make assurances about assistant coach salary increases or facility upgrades so JJ left. That means that JJ took SMU’s offer even though his take-home pay is about *half* of what UH offered.
I agree about Hansen could be great at guard next season, but that assumes that UH has 2 better tackles. Hansen has done a pretty good job at tackle even though he’s been trained a lot as a guard.
Na Koa Bike Update
Want to compare the bikes?
How about comparing the riders on the bikes??
You might know both of them.
Here’s the link to see what they ( bikes and riders) both look like:
http://www.nakoa.org/events.htm
Pilares is lost as wide out. We should change things up and run him out of the backfield as a 3rd slot and let Moniz throw to 5 pass catchers. If you watch the film, even when the back “stays in to block,” usually Leon just stands there. Plus, Moniz is agile enough to buy himself some time if need be.
Hansen’s been pretty good considering he moved up from 3rd string to starter.
How about Thomas at guard?
ST – I thought Laupepa is a senior?
People spend way too much time over here talking about JJ. He’s gone, who cares.
Noticed LWJ did a great job of protecting the back side on Moniz’ TD to Medeiros.
Aloha Kakahiaka!!!
Guess I’ll go walk to practice.
Yup, the student manager does time the snaps. Saw him last week at practice checking out the snap from Ingram to Dunnachie.
ESME (where you?) & out…..
Good Morning All! Hope everyone has a good day
#22
whitey,
who’s moose? Jus wondering.
808ike,
Tom Mui emailed JD and I emailed Rich Sheriff and Stan Ching for some info. I will let you know what the deal is with the WAC banners and if can or no can for some reason.
What’s the depth at the defensive ends lookin like next season?
Good Morning Gang!
Bike project complete, and thanks to Mr. Weir for the photo update. So now we move on to making Bannahs?
Sounds like a contest brewing ST! Since you’ve got some game tickets becoming available…Hmmm!
Agree with #29 Lava.
Some people just can’t stop living in the past. Let it go.
Let’s say Moniz continues to play well, and somehow the Warriors pull off a miraculous sneak into the Hawaii Bowl.
I’d be curious to see which one, if any, of the three-headed ’09 freshman QB trio decides to transfer. Remember in ’04 with Tyler Graunke, Taylor Humphrey, Brandon Satcher; the latter 2 transferred.
In press conferences, it seems like Mack has already annointed Moniz the starter for the next 2 seasons as well.
If Moniz stays healthy and plays out his career as UH’s starting QB, the trio will be RS Juniors after Moniz’ eligibility is up; giving the ’09 QB recruits a max 2 years to be “the man”. Should be interesting.
We got a lot of backup receivers in with promise in Ostrowski, Stutzman, Blount, Pollard, Henry, Tinoco, and Clapp. Hopefully Pilares will return to Slot next year.
Okay, nobody seems to be asking, so here goes:
Good Morning Mr. Wright-Jackson. It was great to see you running so well this past Saturday. The big question is, what was different? Is there any one thing that stands out to you as having made the difference and allowed you to make the plays? I hope you can continue having big games, not only for the team’s sake, but for yours as well.
i knew da coaches wen have da kicking and special teams covered!
I like Pilares at slot but with Jon there I also like Pilares at wideout.
There went my question.
Leon,
When you arrived in Manoa, was playing Wide Receiver or Safety an option for you?
Looking back, would you have switched positions to get more touches?
Keep up the good work and hope to see you playing on Sundays.
Good morning everyone!
Another first today…the blog host with 6 posts in a row! 😯
(he’s been #1 before) 😆
Its his blog to hog if he wants to.
Ya gotta admit though, the look at our future Offense was interesting.
There’s still Kainoa La Count, Tuisasosopo, and others who might vie for playing time on the OL next year.
LWJ, thx for being humble and such a class act on and off the field. Look forward to u tearing it up da rest of the season. Go Warriors!
Each banner will cost around $350 to $500 depending upon size, materials, etc., and, of course, what company does the work. There are signmaking companies who are strong supporters of UH athletics so it would be the right thing to do to give them the business. There are also elected officials who support UH sports who also might be able to provide the names of qualified local companies since most of them have signs made on a regular basis.
Over $20,000 has been raised for the SERVE UP 1000 Fund. However, if that money is dedicated to some special fund (sujmmer school scholarships, travel expenses, post-game meals, etc.) and if there’s any interest here to raise money, then DrDoc and I could put on a special HI-5 drive similar what we proposed a couple of months ago.
Depending upon the number of factors, a three-hour collection drive could raise anywhere from $1500 to $5,000. The dates I’d suggest would be the second Saturday in January or the Sunday following the Super Bowl in February.
NOTE According to recent figures, over $42 million is collected in HI-5 container redemption fees by the State Department of Health. About $11 million is never redeemed by any individual/family or any private organization or agency. Capturing just one per cent of that amount would raise over $100,000 plus be environmentally pono.
Add voluntary HI-5 donations to that figure and the total raised could be increased by a significant amount. Several schools and non-profits across the state are doing just that.
***************
WAFAN: Probably only people in the Stadium would have been able to discern the change with respect to the Jumbotron’s operations.
Congratulations Leon on your POW award.
I noticed Coach deLaura had the team doing warm-ups near the end of halftime on Saturday. Is there anything else you feel might be done, or done differently, during halftime to turnaround the results the team has experienced in the 3rd quarter of games this season?
Aloha Leon Wright-Jackson!
Congratulations on your first-born! What a proud daddy you must be. I remember when I first held my son and gazed upon him. I swear I saw an aura around him and for a split second, I thought I saw the face of God smile back at me.
What were your first thoughts holding your precious child?
Leon Wright-Jackson
Also, congratulations on a great game and your graduating this December. What did you get your degree in? and what will be your immediate plans following graduation? Do I hear Combine in your future?
I’d like to see you do exceptionally well in whatever you decide to do.
Leon…how did it feel to tear up the turf?
Which is more satisfying, shaking a LB for a long one off tackle or taking a pass on a wheel route and beating up on a safety?
Good morning Tsaikos….sorry to have missed this week’s game. But can’t wait until this Saturday….
Mister Leon Wright-Jackson,
I say “mister” because you have been a class-act through all the down periods and a great team player. You’ve been here for nearly three seasons now, played a few different formations on offense, so what are your personal thoughts on the run-and-shoot?
If you were to coach an offense in a mid-major like Hawaii, what kind of offense do you think you would try to employ? How about in a BCS team?
Leon….more importantly thank God and I know you do that you. Have continued to stay the course. The question of importance is how does it feel to be a father ?
Was there any extra incentive for you on Saturday knowing that your former Position Coach was on the opposing sideline?
Maybe we should run the triple option like we use to. LWJ and Pilares in the backfield. Back in the day, the triple option in the NCAA games were deadly. Everybody wanted to be Hawaii or Air Force.
yikes!
VaT will shell out $1.3 to play Boise State next year, 10/02 at Fed Ex Field in Landover, Md., capacity 90,000+ and home of the redskins.
The contest is a one-time, no return deal.
Bravo for BSU and congdrads to VaT for stepping up and showing guts.
Da Donks are gathering support for 2 AQ teams to be selected in BCS Bowls this season.
We all know, Alab/Fla will play Texas in the National title game in Pasadena and either Fla/Alab will get an at-large invite.
4-conference champs from the B10, BE, ACC, PAC 10 makes it 7. TCU is a shoo-in at-large for #8.
That leaves overrated USC and overhyped Iowa for the remaing 2 slots.
C’mon, the Trojans were owned by the team that got owned by da Broncs. Even their fans acknowledge this season has been a disapointment. Dont be surprised if they lose another one or two, with Standford, ARIZ and UCLA remaining on their schedule.
Boise State is clearly ahead of the Hawkeyes in the human polls as well as the geeks who had them #1 several weeks ago….so much for cyber-couch potatoes.
After they lose to Ohio State this week, Iowa should slip into oblivion and back into the comforts of their reality.
Please dont mention Miami that cant win their ACC division or Penn State that lost to both OSU and Iowa.
The Broncs should go bcs bowling unless Robb Akey stages the biggest upset in college sports since Chaminade slew Goliath.
➡ Question: Mr. Jackson, what is a typical game day prep routine for you?…and…How do you wind down from a hi-energy game like Utah?
I’ll bet that brand new baby calms you down quickly! 😎
westsidesview.:
I guess my previous BCS projections need some tweaking huh? This is why I love College football, but hate the BCS. You know i’ll be rooting for Ohio State to win this Saturday to hopefully make the Rose Bowl (if they can get past Michigan.) Who they’ll meet in the Pac 10 is up for grabs right about now. TCU vs Utah is a big one coming up, and i’ll be rooting for Utah. Boise deserves to play either Bama or Florida in the Sugar Bowl if they win out.
ST:
Thanks for the individualized position post for 2010.
With your post, I can see that Blaze Soares will not be back next year.
If everyone stays injury free or minimal injuries, practice hard, and work hard during the off-season, one can expect good or great things in 2010 and Coach Mack has not yet completed the 2010 recruiting!
Q. for Leon Wright-Jackson-
Congrats on the big win Saturday! For me as a fan, it was great to see a balanced offensive attack. Is the offense able to check to a run play at the line of scrimmage even though a pass play has been called when the QB notices a run might work better facing certain defensive sets? Or vice-versa?
Warriors, play well in the remaining 4 games, refine your skills/timing/patterns/communication for 2010 will be a banner year for you!
Most important of all, place much emphasis on academics!!!
Never pencil in an OLM with chronic knee problems as a future starter….without wheels, even vehicles dont move.
ST: your statement that stopclock times are being taken on our kickers has been passed on to you, right?
A student assistant takes the times?
wonderfully impressive.
Who trained the SA to clock?
Digital videos?
The punter/kicker gets briefed in the office or on the field?
By whom?
Are there plans for either Enos or Alex to go to ‘Boot’ Camp in Alabama this summer?
JFlash, you are on it. College football is not a pure science.
Thank God, where would that elevate da geeks?
….geez I cant stand the computer polls–its bias is build-in from the beginning and assumes in biblical format that the SEC is the source of college football Divinity. That’s prolly Y most SEC teams schedule interconference creampuffs and pay them a $1m to get abused.
Look at our ESPN pal James selecting his BCS teams.
The guy has zero vision and is strictly staus quo.
Your predictions were as good as anyone.
Right now, bcs moguls need to descend from their lofty perches and match teams that deserve to play rather than selecting teams who guarantee to pay.
Coach Tormey worked with Enos, Blumberg & Dunnachie today after the gassers were run. Ingram wasn’t snapping at this portion of practice.
Small tussle erupted between a couple of players on the way to the locker room. Fonoti came back out to help settle things down.
Royce out there catching some passes.
Leon Wright-Jackson,
What will you miss most about Hawaii?
What do you think your wife will miss most about Hawaii?
Q for Leon:
Leon, congradulations for a breakout game against Utah State.
You flowed so well during the game and looked like you were having fun bouncing to the outside or shifting direction and running downhill as you do so well.
Tell us about your game against Utah State and when did you sense it could be special?
If TCU and BSU go undefeated… and only one gets into a BCS game, then there will be a new wave of arguments against the current BCS system. IF, however, both go in, they will say that they system works and no change is necessary.
madeinhawaii:
good point. I never really thought of it that way. Hmmm…
westsidesview.: Your posts are always a good read- thanks.
Before the season started in fall camp I heard so much hype describing the Warriors punter. Reading some of the posts, here, and even listening to Coach Miano on 1420 all I heard was about a phenom in the making.
Furthermore, posters with eyewitness reports from practices were reporting seeing punts of 60-70 yards.
Miano during a preseason radio interview on 1420:
“This kid we’ll be playing on the next level,” he goes on to say.”At this stage he’s way further ahead of Matt McBriar.”
So question to Coach Miano what happened?
What’s peculiar is that during the frenzy surrounding the punter during fall camp, I had read one posts suggesting that he/she couldn’t understand why all the fans were clamoring around the punter. Maybe that poster was on to something.
When your football coaches, even Coach Mack, let on and say we have the Tiger Woods of the punting world it piques your interest. And as a fan you get excited. And you’re eager to witness a phenom in the making as the coaches were proclaiming.
But it hasn’t happened.
And it is somewhat disappointing because one trusted how the coaches were describing their gifted punter that was, seemingly, going to shock the punting world with his punts of unheard of distances. .
Hi all! We’re still taking your questions for the Warrior Beat show!
Leon Wright Jackson- what do you like best about playing football? What do you like least?
KAZZ: Thanks for the follow up – should have thought about Mr. Ching but didn’t – too many senior moments.
Aloha Leon,
Some have speculated that there were some issues with the Under Armour cleats (i.e. too narrow or not enough support). As a skill position player how would you compare the Under Armour cleats and or other Under Armour equipment to the Nike gear the team had in 2007?
From time to time, I am reminded of the movie Kelly’s Hero’s, a rag tag band of Amry personnel, who venture into Germany near the end of WW II to “steal” millions of dollars in gold. Kelly is none other than Clint Eastwood.
One of his side kicks is a Sherman tank commander who has a crew member who is always negative. A one liner from the commander to the crew is, “Why so negative, man. Lighten up!”
Leon Wright-Jackson- Who has been your biggest inspiration – on or off the field of play?
Leon Wright-Jackson – what do you like best about being in Hawaii?
Would it not be wonderful to start the 2010 football season 3 – 0?
Which leads me to speculate maybe an 12 and 1 or 11 and 2 record?
What say you Florida Ted? Pomai?
Tom Mui,
Another possibly cheaper alternative would be to have one LARGE banner with the multiple years on it and one that would allow for more to be added on later.
BTW I just got off the phone with a resident Tsaiko that works in this field of signage for some help. So we’ve got the ball rolling so to speak.
A-House would that be oddball talking to the love boat captain?
Leon looks like coach Nash.
Posted a question on the Cover it Live box, but have to run off to eat lobster with my Mom. Will check the chat out later.
GO, LEON!!! GO ALEX!!!
GO WARRIORS!!!
Leon sounds like Coach Nash too…
They stopped the feed. Must be getting ready.
SHOWTIME!
2010 same thing. 10 + wins. To pin point any further is impossible.
I think we all know how thin the line between winning an losing really is.
Every year 10 + wins, I would consider the program quite successful, especially if you throw in a WAC championship every three years or better.
Redzone:
You have seen the movies also!
Did not want to use names, but Oddball was a character!
KAZZ: Any rough estimate on costs?
Thanks
ahouse the saying is “always with the negative waves moriarity, always with the negative waves” don southerland to gavin macloud and oddball was don rickles. loved that movie too
I think I got it figured out, I believe that Alex D. punts better without his helmet on. If you look at his highlight video, no helmet, during warm ups between halves, he was punting without his helmet on and was punting decent. I don’t believe the Aussie-rules Football has helmets, nor does Rugby. Any rules on punter having to wear a helmet during the game?
LWJ – any background story on the shirt you’re wearing?
Kelly’s Heroes was a fictional movie about a group of self-serving American GIs turned thieves that go AWOL during WWII to steal gold….,it was created by a cult-pop scriptwriter borrowing lines from the Mod Squad.
Really, shallow, Haight-Ashbury hippie vernacular spoken by cannabis sativa minions of the era.
Is that your best literary leader?
You dont really believe that KH’s represent anything that resembles realtime combat do you?
Unless you are predicting we will go 3-0 next year, by beating USC at home and the US Army and Colorado back-to-back on the road?
Man, the vibes aint negative, it’s just the sight of people drowning in their own koolaid that is mind blowing.
GREAT SHOW!
Mahalo!
Leon… Class Act!
Thanks for coming on the show.
Thanks for being a Warrior!
Great show!
Mahalo Stephen and Leila.
Mahalo Leon Wright-Jackson.
I like the Fonz: Sit on it!
Sutherland was oddball and Rickles was crapgame.
A-House ~ I agree with your #79. It does get kinda krazy sometimes. I try not to forget that I’m just a fan. My passion is kept in check and I let the coaching staff do the job they were hired to do. I try to keep it on the lighter side at all times. Life’s too short! Enjoying the ride…
Notice at the Rich Miano camps he never offers to mentor punter/kickers. It is common on the mainland.
I believe coach Duff wanted to bring a guru over for the summer several years ago but no one wanted to post the bucks….so much for that phase of football that comprises 1/3 of the game…..it is being handled by student assistants.
Great show with LWJ. I found his answer to my question a little disturbing though. Watching the game this past Saturday, you could tell pretty easily when a Warrior pass play or run play would have the greatest effect based on the defensive set. Being able to check from one to the other would be a definate advantage in my armchair QB opinion.
@d1
From Barbarino
up your nose with a rubber hose…….
Alabama maybe our National Champs.
They are good by design and by focus to detail.
They pay attention to punting/kicking bc they dont have an explosive O and really play position football, ball control and NFL D. However, they pay strict attention to STs and in particular FGs.
Their kicker Leigh Tiffin has been 5-5, 2-3, 4-4 and 3-3 in his last 4 games against Miss State, S Carolina, Tenn and LSU. You better believe he has instruction and better yet, Nick Saban monitors with competent staff, not student aid.
I like what LWJ had to say about developing instincts. Seeing what was coming down before the snap and just after- that is what Colt and the Dreds could do. The more Warriors can do this, the better it will be- like registering information so quickly that it is like watching the plays in slow motion almost.
OK. On to next Saturday!
Tom Mui,
Right now I don’t even know the true costs, but you would have to imagine 13 banners would get expensive… very expensive which is why the alternative of a SINGLE large banner with the mulitple years with room to add more would be more cost friendly, we most likely would have to go this route.
However, I am still waiting to hear from either Stan Ching or Rich Sheriff.
I have a bunch of questions because we know how the NCAA can get.
For example, for those willing to chip in money, I doubt we can get a big banner made on our own with all the WAC championship years and just give it to Rich Sheriff or the volleyball program to hang. I suspect that the WAC would not “recognize” the banner as an officially licensed banner and would not allow it to be displayed. I only assume this at this time.
We all know the NCAA has all these rules and junk so right now it’s a wait and see thing with all the red tape we may have to go through.
If you hear from JD first let me know or if I hear from Stan Ching or Rich Sheriff first I’ll post something.
Im just sharing the moment with Leon and feeling the joy of his success.
It hasnt been a smooth ride for LWJ, injury wise and critical comments notwithstanding…. so it’s pure elation for him to have had a great game in his aloha year.
Im sure he feels the love from Hawaii fans and THAT is the aloha he will remember….best wishes in your last four games Leon.
Hey Tsaikos…good afternoon. I’ll have to watch the replay of the WB today.
Forgot to wish Mrs. Bulla a Happy Birthday today.
Good afternoon!
Happy birthday to Bulla’s better half.
Kazz – how about 2 banners for now and 1 waiting in the wings – 1 for each decade (90s, 00s, 10s)? 😀
JM,
That’s another good suggestion.
First gotta wait to see what the word is from da peeps at Manoa.
You know… Those pesky NCAA rules yeah… 🙄
Boise State is getting $1.25 million to play Virginia Tech at FedEx Field next year, which is the highest guarantee in both school and Western Athletic Conference history. The only number that comes close is the reported $1 million San Jose State is getting to play at Alabama in next year’s season opener.
The Broncos are still searching for brandname opponents in 2011.
Athletic director Gene Bleymaier said that while the Broncos have been turned down by several automatic qualifying schools for both home-and-home and guarantee games in 2011, the pool of teams available is by no means dried up.
“I didn’t put this story out, it came from our commissioner, and yeah, in 2011 we’re having some trouble, but we haven’t exhausted the number of schools either,” Bleymaier said. “So, I’m not panicking. I’m very hopeful that we’ll find a game in 2011 and thereafter. I think there’s games out there, we just need to find them.”
Yes, the time’s about right….
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS. BULLA !!!
Hey SteveM- missed you guys on Sat!
Happy Birthday Greetings to our Head Cheerleader…Mrs. Bulla!
Hmmmmmmmmm, wonder what the relationship is between reminiscing about an old movie got to do with “actual combat conditions” and literature?
I have trained under many conditions including live ammo, naplam, grenades, etc. Maybe some one can tell us what his “combat ” experience has been.
A most Happy birfday to Mrs Bulla, the much better half of Bulla who is a very cool person!
Hi LizKauai — we made it to the game (parked in the half full stadium parking lot around 1530). I was so sleepy I crashed upon return to the land world so we went late. 🙂
First time we got to sit with Slugger at our seats…
D-1’s question asking LWJ about Warrior’s strength and conditioning coach Mel D leading second half warm ups in the Utah St. game was a very good question.
Interpreting what LWJ said: “This is something new that Coach Mack has started.”
Huh? >omg.
Prior to the Utah State could the lack of warming up before taking the field in the second half be traced back to second half woes and pulled muscles?
sneaky use of wording to make a sneaky innuendo….
ummm, is there practice tomorrow? The players aren’t gonna have to jump the fence again are they? 🙄
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS. BULLA !!!
Its a wonder and a miracle that the Wahine sofballers got their bracelets before they became grandmothers and a miracle that the football players got their bikes before they became grandfathers.
Much mahalos to the NCAA and their regulations.
So does this mean Moniz and others would be in legitimate trouble if Moniz wears a Kahuku shirt?
And to think the Berlin Wall fell years ago… 🙄
An early thank you to every one of our present and past veterans!!!
At home we are harping on whether a player deserves to play or if a coach should remain employed. While in the hills of Afghanistan soldiers about the same age as our maligned players are fighting for their lives and their commanders are making decisions and crafting plans that will affect lives.
To every one of those who continue to freely express their opinions go out of your way to thank a veteran!
And for our melodic Tsai-kos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kglWth784uU
Happy birthday to Bulla’s Boss and light of his life!!!
Ridiculosity!
@ Compliance officer
UP YOUR NOSE WITH A RUBBER HOSE!!!!!
per Vinnie Barbarino
If the players have to jump the fence to practice and one is injured who is liable? The player for trespassing, or the school for not opening the gate?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LYN!!!
A-House ~
Those of us who have been down that valley would much prefer the fictional ‘KH’ Hollywood versions. The new movie George Clooney starz in is about the infamous goats. Total Tsaiko fabrication!
Anyone who has been thru SF training at Bragg can identify with the goat lab. Peta protestors lose it over what they think goes on inside. They don’t know how many lives have been saved because of the research that results from meeting mission requirements there.
Just saying…what.ever!
I get the lesson learned from the comparison Col A-house. Like “From Here to Eternity” and the military of that era.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mrs. Bulla…any many, many more!
What a ridiculous ruling on the “gentlemen’s bet.” I would certainly like to see the specific language of the pertinent rule.
ST, I like the looks of the projected defense for next year. Tuipulotu is going to be a great addition in the interior line. Brashton is a great kid and I hope that he can work through his injury and play one more year. Otherwise, Jacob Barit may end up being our guy in the middle. Watch for his name. Malcolm Lane should help us a lot as a deep threat. I think Javonte will continue to improve as well. I am sure you also have Bryant Moniz penciled in at quarterback. I did not see his name on your list.
Great to see that we are favored by 20 this weekend.
Happy Birthday to Mrs. Bulla!
Bombers Arise!
So, if the players “traded” shirts and wore them, that would be okay?
Maybe Moniz “forgot” a shirt and has to borrow one from his good friends to happens to be from Kahuku. Or is borrowing, and/or helping a friend in need now frowned upon by the No Conscience At All folks?
Hahahaha
Good one Duffer
or should I say, “Welcome Back Duffer”
Sweathogs still live
A-House I have always hated grenades and to this day I still do.
I cannot understand why the NCAA would care if a player wore a t-shirt that belonged to another player.
NMSU is starting a different QB on Saturday. This QB has played a lot this season so the coaches have film on him.
Mr. Jim Donovan,
I would encourage you to schedule an away game and take the money. Do this every season and to heck with the home-home series as no big time program will agree to it . Since we are going to have to play La Tech, see if you LSU would like to have us play them sometime when we have to travel to Louisiana. Or if we can play at Alabama or Auburn that would also be great.
A slaughter or not, money is money and our program needs it bad.
note: I have emailed this request to JD as well. 🙂
UH COs move quickly to interpret NCAA rules narrowly that impact UH athletes broqadly unless these rules qualify our players academically–then they go north and dont use NCAA standards–bureaucratic brain starved idiots exclusively cloned in Manoa.
Caveat:
The last time photos were taken of UH players scaling the fence surrounding our practice facility and publicized, the pics were sent all over the collegiate recruiting community mocking UH athletics.
i guess if you look at the dictionary version of gambling or wager, the terminology is prohibited in this case. Next time, players should not say anything, but just have the loser wear the winning team shirt. after all, the “gentlemen’s agreement” was between 2 gentlemen and not the team. “gentlemen’s agreement” is not gambling or wager, but an agreement of rules of a game, work, etc.
hey bhf2 and warriormojo, you need an apprentice?????
Thank God for those compliance officers! Keeping our lads safe from themselves!
mocking maybe, but they were doing part of their strength training to see if they can scale the fence, similar to scaling the wall in military training!!!!
hahahahahaaaaaaaaaa. broke my stomach!!!!!!!!!
dpk, how you????
porgot, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS BULLA!!!!!!!!!!
if i work hard at this, going be in top #150

thank for all the props for mrs bulla, she just finished work and is having a celebratory beverage with co workers at big kahunas; then we have to attend the waikiki neighborhood board meeting……..
Imua Warriors, let’s do it again this Saturday….in commemoration of the game, i am going to eat namasu for the rest of the week
GO WARRIORS
GO WILDCATS (X2)
Too bad the Warriors didn’t try to break the offensive record in total yards. What a treat that would have been to the old faithful that showed up on Saturday. I mean the win was a treat in itself… but to break a record 744? yards would have been something to truly behold. A reward.
What does the team do when it’s pouring cats-n-dogs? Would they still workout in the rain at Ching Field?
What does the team do when it’s pouring cats-n-dogs?
They try not to step on a poodle.
Slugger – I think they move into Klum Gym if it is available.
Cinn’s Brian Kelly has turned misfortune into a boon for his #5 ranked Bearcats. When his starting QB, 6 6″ senior Tony Pike went down in the 6th game against South Florida, not many gave Cinn a serious look to remain unbeaten.
Coach Kelly has been known to work miracles since he arrived on campus in 2007 after taking Central Michigan to a MAC championship. Kelly sent in 6 1″ soph Zach Collaros.
Cinn has gone on to tack on three more victories and in the process Collaros has bypassed Pike in performance.
Coach Kelly announced Tuesday that Collaros will be his starter. The sophomore backup has played spectacularly and kept the Bearcats (9-0) in the national title conversation while Pike heals from surgery to replace a metal plate in his left forearm.
Zach Collaros has proven he can throw down the field, and his numbers on throws 10 yards or longer compare favorably to the injured Tony Pike.
Collaros threw for 480 yards — the second-highest total in school history — during a 47-45 win over Connecticut on Saturday night. Pike warmed up before the game but didn’t play. Kelly said the senior will run some plays against West Virginia (7-2).
Bryant Moniz is a walk-on.
A funky football gypsy whose name came up only among warrior fans with a roster in hand.
He was allowed to take reps only after three QB scholies on the depth chart had their chance.
My first impression of Bryant Moniz drew an annoying gasp when he jogged on the field at Aloha to make his first start helmetless and sporting braids and facial hair.
Now, he is a starting QB and like Zach Collaros, a pleasant find with a bright future as UH’s QB for the next 2 years.
When you peruse comparable stats between Moniz and Greg Alexander you will lose focus unless you scan total team O in the last 2 games. A story is unfolding.
Moniz simply makes our O more potent.
Alexander understood the passing system better, but Moniz makes opposing Ds guess more bc of his all around athletic abilities.
Hawaii has averaged nearly 600 yards in TO in the last two games w Moniz and have established a serious running game.
Its like watching reverse gravity taking place without being on the moon.
Hawaii averaged 392 TO in Alexander’s last 2 starts.
In the last 2 games, Moniz has completed 50/86 passes for 711 y and 7 TDs, more importantly, we have rushed for 455 net yards.
Hello!
In Alexander’s last two games against UNLV and LaT we had net rushing of +28 for and -7 respectively for a whopping 21 yard total.
The story is still unfolding and Greg Alexander is gone for the season.
Whatever our coaches do, they will be judged on their improvisation and handling of Moniz.
He can make an impact and hopefully MAC n Staff can turn some screws and adjust their O to enhance Bryant’s talents….we shall see.
Dang! homey better watch his poodles!
Can you throw footballs around in Klum Gym?

KAZZ:
Just thinking out loud (and in public).
There’s a lot of advertisements in SSC.
How’s about a banner on the rafters that says (in small print – 15 point): The Tsaikos(r) congratulates:
(in extremely large print) WAHINE VOLLEYBALL WAC CHAMPIONS (and the years)
ST & Princess Leila,
Great show with Leon today. No glitches. (In my Aunty voice:) He’s such a nice young man.
Nothing’s inexpensive in the SSC.
We pay more than $200,000 for the pleasure.
Good night!

Awwww….PowderPuff!
No boom boom? 😕
Since I’d already done the research on banner costs for another organization, I shared what I’d found out in #50 above. Again, we can raise funds for the decade banners – 75 to 84, 85 to 94, 95 to 04, and 05 to 14 in one Saturday.
RE NCAA rules – the Compliance Officer does not make them, she only enforces them. If you want to change the rules, then that means getting involved somehow in its internal operations. I have no idea what that involves, but I’m willing to spend a couple of hours finding out although I suspect that the policy/rulesmakers are all connected to institutions of higher learning. Perhaps Jim Donovan can shed some light on who asked for the ruling, how to appeal it, and how to get some fairer and squarer people actively involved in the inner workings of the NCAA.
@ 171
So what you’re saying is that somewhere in the NCAA regulations is a section that prohibits a “wager” between football players where no money is involved, much less, an exchange of t-shirts?
I’m not so naive to think that of all the thousands of student athletes that there a no “wagers” between any two student athletes, such as “betting” on their former schools.
I think it’s a matter of interpretation of a rule, rather than one written in stone.
Nitey Nite and Sweet Warrior Dreams!
Night all!
golly.
one win and euphoria has overcome the blog. its been nearly two hours since everyone took slugger literally.
so if all of the reports are true, then the running back comes in this weekend for his trip. i am assuming that his la habra hs teammate olb commit dominick sierra will also take his official visit at the same time.
hey folks, what better way than to show up for the game to display your love for the new recruits.
…and now that we have shown the ability to run the ball. hey, you never know.
Chawan,
Lame but true! Hahahahaha! 😆
Re: WAC Wahine volleyball banners.
We’ll wait for the info on what the deal is from either JD, Stan Ching, or Rich Sheriff.
There HAS to be NCAA red tape all over the process.
So where the hell is this storm??????
Listened to another Call the Coach Show, and this one Coach Mack out did himself with letting onto the listeners of how he loves his team, players and coaches.
Surprising what a win does to a person as the ever so nurturing coach kept reminding the listeners of how all his players are, seemingly, playing superb.
And as the show wore on the coach goes out of his way in campaigning this message.
Seemingly every answer to every question ended with Mack elevating his players and assistants with so much praise.
As the show went on I wanted to scream and pull out my hair.
And I wanted to call in myself and ask the coach what is his purpose of why he describes all his players and assistants with such grandiose.
The coach even let on:
“Lamitrius Davis will be playing at the next level.”
“I’ve coached with Zorn and Rolo is way better QB coach.”
Hasn’t the coach learned that the psyche of his players and assistants are better suited if he lights a fire under them instead of publically smothering them with platitudes.
Keep challenging the players, keep being demanding of the assistants, and thus extracting the best out of them is all text book… and have Coach Mack save his Richard Simmons personality and his self love for the post season banquet or in privacy, where platitudes and narcissism are better suited, would be my advice to the coach.
Stephen Tsai Friends Unite!
Doppler shows the rain approacheth!
My asthma is confirming it…
i didnt listen to call the coach last night, but i heard we got a new qb, david graham.
Is the “compliance officer” a real person, or …. a brand of toilet paper?

Now that is a truly fine photo of Mrs. Bulla!!! 😆
One big key for BSU’s success is that they pay their assistant coaches well, so they don’t lose key assistants like how UH lost Coach Cav and Mac the first time he was at UH. BSU pays its assistant coaches more than all non-BCS schools and even more than 14 BCS conference schools…given the cost of living in Boise, those assistants are really doing well financially!
Keeping their assistants together is one reason why BSU is able to sustain their success.
A fine Veteran’s Day to all!
Today, remember why we have the luxury of things like this blog.
We should all be awe-full!!!
The coordinators for BSU make more than 3 D-IA head coaches! If they keep getting the raises they have been getting in the past, those two BSU assistants could make more than Idaho’s head coach soon.

When will the off topic posts return? I think I am not the only one who misses them.

wafan,
First everybody in my family got sick, then we had houseguests living with us for a few weeks. Our friends really cut down on my blog time because I was talking story with them instead of being on my computer.
The nice thing is that the wife of the couple is one of Lori’s best friends from Castle High and she and her husband are good company. Plus, Lori’s friend made me pickled mango the other day! Lori had bought a whole bunch of mangos for me last week (3 for $1) and Louise made a huge batch of pickled mango with them…
Shane Victorino is getting married in Hawaii on Saturday.
Good morning Tsaikos. A special day for those who put their lives in harm’s way to give us freedom. Thank You!!!!
Am glad to read that the coaches have realized that there is a major problem with our kicker. For this weekend’s game, personally, i would let enos do the kickoffs, but would use the other kicker for fg and pat.
if a team has a feeling that they will do good and will have a chance to play many players, how would you prepare for the game??? for me, there would be no let up in practice, but during practice, put in players without holding up time. in other words, substitute players in practice like it is real gametime.
learning and managing substitutions is a visible problem, but in actuality, should be invisible. our coaches need to work on this during practice, so when it is gametime, substitution becomes part of the plays and game, not a distraction or chaos. let see if the warriors can have organized substitution this weekend.
Mmmmmmmmm

Na Koa lunch report for 11/9/09 is now up:
http://www.nakoa.org/lunchreports.htm#110909
garret,
You are starting to scratch the surface of the real issues at Manoa.
There are reasons for a program’s success or failure.
Boise State and Hawaii are classic contrasting examples.
You raise a legitimate issue on assistant and position coach supplemental salaries.
Further, not only do you take care of your coaches but also supporting staff, such as qualified trainers.
Chris Petersen recognizes that fact.
A significant portion of his salary is diverted to his staff by his choice.
JJ made an attempt in his later years but his coaches were so under paid when he was at Hawaii nearly his entire staff moonlighted and held other jobs.
Coach Jones changed at SMU and his payout to staff is included in his salary. Not very many people are aware of this.
More importantly, there remains a need to develop a bonafide and viable training program with an accredited training staff….not just a token, verbose manual, junked in a storage bin. Or, a trainer that brandishes 17″ guns in cut-off shirts….but the real deal!
Keep digging, you’re on the correct path….mahalo.
Good Morning Tsaikos!
Happy Veteran’s Day!
Good Morning All! Thank you to all those who have served, those who are serving, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so I can enjoy the freedoms I enjoy today. God Bless you all.
