Fulfilling the promise

Congrats again to Stretch and Esme Infante-Nii for not only meeting their target goals for  the Susan G. Komen For the Cure fundraiser, but for coming through on their daring dares.

It went largely unnoticed but Greg Salas played in all three phases — slotback, punt returner and safety — during the Idaho game. Safety? On the final play before the half, the Vandals lined up to take a knee and run out the clock. Thinking there was a possibility the Vandals might fake it, head coach Greg McMackin told Salas to go out and play free safety. The Vandals did indeed take a knee, and the half ended without Salas having to make a defensive play.

Despite wideout Rodney Bradley’s season-ending leg injury, Salas will remain at slotback. Sort of. There are plans to slide him to different points. UH is looking at a few options to replace Bradley. For now, it’s Joe Avery, who finished the Idaho game at left wideout. The Warriors are hopeful that Royce Pollard, who did not make the road trip because of a stress fracture in his left fibula, will be available. They also are considering moving a slotback to the outside. Slotback Jon Medeiros has played there in practice. He also was used as a mid-wide receiver when the Warriors ran the five-wide scheme a few times against Idaho. It appears Medeiros and quarterback Bryant Moniz have formed a comfortable connection.

After going through airport security, I don’t think Robert Kekaula needs to undergo a physical for another year:

Kekaula gave him the nickname “First” Lewis because he likes to be the first one at the gate, first one on the plane, first one off the plane. Sometimes we’re in conversation and then — whoosh — he’s gone. Here he is in action:

I like the potential of Paipai, Hanohano, Correa and Satele…with Vaughn, Tuipolotu, Hafoka, Masch, Purcell, and Sione hopefully all coming back next year…we will only be much better.

I also think that Blaze should be able to return because of his medical problems last year, and of course, Brashton. All the DB’s also return…love the way Spencer Smith is stepping up.

  10. Maverick October 19, 2009 6:58 am

    Speaking of Salas,
I enjoyed the game ending TD reception with the Vandal defender trying to lay a lick on Salas in the end zone. That guy just collapsed backward fat to his okole.
Salas looked backed to him with standing firm, both feet on the ground. Didn’t budge.

  11. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2009 6:58 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Prayers for all of our wounded Warriors. Having so many injuries this year has really had an impact on the team.

    Top ten?

  12. Garret October 19, 2009 6:59 am

I didn’t notice that Salas played safety at the end of the half…ST, thank you for pointing that out.

Will be interesting to watch this weeks point spread doing the Rollercoaster dance.

  14. expat October 19, 2009 7:00 am

Hawaii has a habit of playing the spoiler at home against highly ranked conference opponents. Let’s hope they do so again.

The season isn’t over and the goal of a bowl game is still achievable, if only barely. Despite the injuries and setbacks the guys are still fighting and that is good to see.

The Broncos might overlook the Warriors given the recent losing streak and might not be mentally ready. I am just hoping for a good game.

  15. Garret October 19, 2009 7:00 am

Avery played really well and Pollard has already had his moments this season, so UH at least has options to replace Bradley. Bradley’s deep threat will be hard to replace, so UH at least has depth and will put a good receiver in his spot.

  16. Maverick October 19, 2009 7:01 am

Howzit to all our Monday morning early risers!

  17. Garret October 19, 2009 7:02 am

Pisa really is having some tough luck with injuries this season…and he’s on a 1-year contract, so he really needs to recover quickly to earn his next contract.

Strongside linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa was carted off the field with a knee injury. This is the second apparent serious injury for Tinoisamoa already this season, so you have to wonder about his future in Chicago.

  18. Hank October 19, 2009 7:03 am

    Maverick,

Did you also notice when Moniz ran for his touchdown the Vandal Defender try go for his head with his forearm two-steps into the endzone? Moniz just shrugged him off…

  19. Garret October 19, 2009 7:04 am

Despite all the talk by the coaches in Cleveland about how David Veikune was the top backup for Jackson and would go in if he was injured, it appears that Cleveland used two other LBs instead of Veikune.

Im not sure what the deal is with rookie linebacker David Veikune, but the second-rounder still wasn’t able to get on the field for the defense – despite linebackers Kamerion Wimbley (flu) and D’Qwell Jackson (shoulder injury) being out, Jackson only playing the first half. Instead, Justin Trusnik made his first career start in place of Wimbley, and the Nordonia product had some decent moments. When Jackson went out, fourth-rounder Kaluka Maiava played inside linebacker. It seems switching Veikune from defensive end at Hawaii to linebacker in the pros has not been an easy adjustment.

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2009 7:05 am

    Hey Maverick! Howz you braddah?

Condolences to Ronnie and her family.
Congratulations to Stretch for his great success as a fundraiser.

  21. letsgowarriors October 19, 2009 7:06 am

btw, carrying over from the prior blog conversation. Harbor’s RB Jon White, who is also a 4/3 guy, leads the Cali JC System with 1,286 all purpose yards. avg. 214 yards a game rushing/receiving/returning. and 15 TDs this season.

  22. Garret October 19, 2009 7:06 am

Ryan Mouton struggled against the Patriots, not a surprise for a rookie CB.

Has any player ever regressed as badly as Titans safety Michael Griffin has from one season to the next? I understand he had little help from his overmatched corners (Ryan Mouton had the mother of all bad days), but a huge part of playing safety is making quick reads and reacting to them. Griffin got caught standing and staring several times by Tom Brady, and that wasn’t the first time this year. Not even the 21st time this year…and this guy was in the Pro Bowl last year.

  23. Garret October 19, 2009 7:07 am

At least Mouton took the criticism and did not use the weather as an excuse.

So when Ryan Mouton, a rookie out of the University of Hawaii, came out of the runway into a near white-out (a December-like day in mid-October) his bones, not to mention his nerves, were shaking.

“You can’t blame the weather, when it’s wet and slippery like that you can’t use it as an excuse,” said Mouton, the Titans’ safety.

  24. Garret October 19, 2009 7:09 am

    Update on Pisa’s situation.

Bears SLB Pisa Tinoisamoa had trouble moving his right knee after the game Sunday night, and beat writer Brad Biggs says it “doesn’t look good.”

This is the same knee Tinoisamoa hurt in Week 1

the last dozen posts last nite point out a MAJOR problem that needs to be addressed. and that kinda stuff don’t have to wait till next year. .

summa you are in the know, more than just guessing. summa you don’t want to say. i can understand dat, da positives and stuff.

but i can. da simple fakk is coach gotta point da finga and get crackin! not returning emails and phone calls to da Harbor JC coach, no excuse for that lack of class! depressing, and distressing. no wonder we are da at da bottom. but we can do something. let’s look up. rise an shine!

zan no jus tell me get plenny new items on da training table. i like see da results on da playing field.

Hawaii got snookered by JJ into making room at da bank for our coaching crew. we put da down. we changed Herman Frazier. we tried to help ourselves. we trying to help ourselves. dats what i’m trying to do right now, help us. and you telling me we not returning phone callls? why? you busy winning? pftttt….

but I will not quit on da Warriors. I’m gonna make it my mission to inspire da defense even if the coaches will not.

  28. Garret October 19, 2009 7:24 am

    bighilofan2,

I wasn’t going to say anything, but letsgowarriors mentioned it first so I just added a little. Kind of like how the Dan Kelly stuff stayed off the blog for 4 days until Kelly made a website that linked to the articles and posted it on SH…though I discussed it with 3 Tsaikos over e-mail and was advised to leave it off the blog.

That RB that is mentioned in #21 also has excellent stats and will find a good place to play elsewhere if UH isn’t interested.

  29. bighilofan2 October 19, 2009 7:25 am

    have a nice day Tsaikos.

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

reminder, ask coach about the non-returned emails and calls to the Harbor JC Coach. maybe the coach who had the assignment last week in Cali went up and talked to him. maybe Garret’s info was out of date.

will be easy enough for us to confirm after you ask the coach. give him chances for be up an up wit us about his recruiters. Thanks.

the beauty of the internet, the newspapers and access to radio station running the UH games is that we can fix this problem. some may not like ochocinco, for example, because he is a braggart, for example, but on a given Sunday dat bugga get potential for produce.

we got potential fo produce right here, right now. and benefit a lot of peeps who have Warrior Nation at heart, and dats us, da Tsaikos.

so I’m looking for Coach, today, right now, to stand up and walk the talk.
fix da phone. fix da email. stand up! stand up fo Hawaii!

    Ralph,

I’m sorry that my archive blog doesn’t have an easy way to isolate quotes from particular people. You can do a search with a keyword, but if you are looking for quotes from Mac he’s in almost all of my blog entries.

If you have something in particular that you are looking for, e-mail me and I can try to gather stuff if I have time before I have to scale back my blogging in 6 days (one reason I’m trying to post more now). I’m not giving up on the Warriors, but I will have to blog less once our friends start living with us on Sunday…I can blog like normal once they get an apartment and leave our home.

    Aloha Kakou:

Please start saving your HI-5 cans & bottles from home or work to bring to the Boise State T-Gate on Saturday, October 24.

The beneficiary this time is the “Serving Up 1,000” Fundraiser honoring Coach Shoji’s 1,000th win this past Saturday. The donation on behalf of the Tsai-kos will go towards Wahine volleyball scholarships or travel expenses.

QUICK ASIDE: It was indeed a wonderful experience to be there for the 1,000th win. Had no idea so many folks from the Warrior Beat were sitting in the Section LL – we were in MM/Row 6 probably no more than 50 feet away – but then we slid in right before the introductions because we’d been at the Hawaii International Film Festival seeing an incredible martial arts film about a real-life warrior called IP MAN. If you get a chance, do see it.
    .
Back to the Boise State T-Gate: James will be delivering the folding table, the bin and the extra sacks Saturday norming – I’m dropping them off at his office on Friday afternoon – because we’re not going to be arriving at Cabana A until sometime around 3:30 pm. See the post below as to why.

All the recyclables – including donations brought from home – will be stored during the breakdown before the game so that they won’t “walk away” with someone looking to pick up some spare change. We’ll also set out the bin or a collection sack at the post-game party.

Here are the recipients at the remaining home games

    Saturday, November 7, UTAH STATE – Dole Middle School’s Cross-Country Fall Semester Program;

    Saturday, November 14, NEW MEXICO STATE – Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance;

    Saturday, November 28, NAVY – Koa Anuenue Scholarship Program/Men’s Sports other than football;

Saturday, December 5, WISCONSIN – Koa Anuenue Scholarship Program/Wahine Sports other than volleyball.

The T-Gate recipient for the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl will be announced after the regular season.

Again, ALL of the redemption fees will be made on behalf of the Tsai-kos & will be sent to the designated recipients within 48 – 72 hours of each T-Gate.

  42. duffer (iPhone) October 19, 2009 9:36 am

    @Slugger

Thanks, I’ll check when I go home. Seems the filter here at works frowns on blogs and such! 🙁

  43. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 19, 2009 9:36 am

About three months ago, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association announced that it was forced to reduce its 2009 – 2010 budget by $1.2 million. By working with individuals and businesses across the state, HHSAA created the SAVE OUR SPORTS Fund Drive which has already raised nearly $1 million to help defray the budget shortfall – including $45 in redemption fees from the last T-Gate – but more needs to be done.

On SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, the Windward Ahupua`a Alliance, a 501c3 organization working together with city & state elected officials representing the many communities in Ko`olaupoko, will be holding a THREE FOR THE PRICE OF ONE HI-5 REDEMPTION DRIVE to benefit the after-school athletic programs at Kalaheo, Kailua & Castle High Schools.

THREE FOR THE PRICE OF ONE will help keep plastic, glass & aluminum containers out of the landfill, lower our carbon footprint, AND financially support THREE high school athletic programs all at the same time!!

The THREE FOR THE PRICE OF ONE HI-5 REDEMPTION DRIVE will be held at two locations: Castle High School on Kane`ohe Bay Drive and Pohakapu Park opposite Castle Medical Center in Kailua where Reynolds Recycling will have their truck. We’ll also be accepting cash donations & checks at both locations.

Our goal is to collect 60,000 containers in three hours at the three sites combined. ALL donations and redemption fees will go to HHSAA and dispersed equally amongst the three schools.

Please encourage your friends, co-workers, relatives, etc., who live in Waimanalo, Kailua, Kane`ohe & Kahalu`u to support the event. by dropping off their cans & bottles at one of the two sites.

And don’t forget to bring your cans & bottles to the T-Gate – see above for details.

Mahalo in advance for supporting youth as well as UH athletic programs.

While it isn’t clear what impact loosing Bradley had in the Idaho the game, the loss of him for the season is significant.

What is clear is to me is that if you look at the video replays of Keo’s contact with Bradley, after Keo wasn’t able to make a legitimate tackle, he stretched his leg out and swung it upward at Bradley’s shin. If I’m not mistaken thats called a leg whip and is illegal but wasn’t called.

This is not the reason we lost the game but it is the reason we lost Bradley.

It seems to me that a lot of the Hawaii boys playing for Idaho were out for blood.

    What goes around comes around.

    kapolei doc…

it is hard to say if keo purposely made that last ditch effort to bring bradley down in a very unconventional way. i too noticed that the local boys played really hard. however, to say that they played for blood is another issue. and only they know. i am hoping that they were playing hard for their team and for local pride.

or could it be that we are not???

yet, at the same time, i wish that our team played with more of a sense of urgency and pride. it seems to me that at times we aren’t playing hard at all.

we need to rise up to the level of the competition in the ensuing weeks as it gets tougher beginning with boise state. now, here’s a team that if we can’t get up for then we have no business being on that same green halawa turf come saturday.

hey, i am not asking for us to beat the broncos, just asking for a spirited, all out effort that we have been known for.

in boxing vernacular, one would say “win, lose, or draw just go down swinging!”

Okay I can see why everyone is upset about the whole JC coach thing, but didn’t Mack say they were going to recruit more HS kids to build a solid foundation? This could be the reason why the interest in jc recruits has wained down a bit.

Is that what caused it? Dang, that sucks. Once I heard Kekaula report that he was grabbing the area between his knee and ankle I knew it. If it was a leg whip that caused it that’s even worse. A dirty play and that player knows it. Does the NCAA have a system to go back and review plays like these and levy penalties like the NFL has? I mean, you can’t fine the player obviously but a warning and a suspension?

Such a shameful loss because Bradley was turning into a stellar playmaker his first year in the systen. Best wishes for a full recovery and hope to see him next year better than ever.

Rough rough rough rotten luck season… just gotta buckle down, Mean Greenies, and weather the storm and show our appreciation to our Warriors playing their hearts out every week.

But at least we’re not the Redskins…

As much as I enjoy their self destruction, Jim Zorn deserves to be treated better than that. It’s like Dan Snyder is giving him a wedgie in the cafeteria in front of the entire school. Let the man have his dignity at least. Not often you’ll get a Cowpoke fan feeling sorry for a Deadskin, but man… just horrible what’s going on down there.

  67. A-House October 19, 2009 11:37 am

    Harbor City JC coach:

Whether UH goes the high school route or JC or both, it is common courtesy to respond to someone – at least that’s what I was taught.

I find it hard to believe that Coach Mack is not acknowledging a phone call and/or email – just does not sound like him.

Second, as a coach one should never ever close a recruiting source as no one knows what the future holds.

If true, then it’s very disappointing for me.

  68. A-House October 19, 2009 11:43 am

    ah, porgot to add:

if “speed” is a premium for UH football, the coaches have to look at the mainland, HS or JC, as Hawaii does not produce that many 4.3 athletes.

as time goes by, we are seeing faster athletes in Hawaii, but not in the quantity you will find on the mainland.

  69. SteveM October 19, 2009 11:45 am

bighilofan2 — this reminds me… I learned that infrequent blogger mp paddles with your cuz Kakanui on Sundays. Says he knows you too. He was hangin’ on the bar side at Genji’s again for the Idaho game. Farmer too, had a long discussion with Slugger about slug control and beer traps 😛

Great pix of RK…could become a celebrity model for TSA.

Met RK at the gate waiting for our flight to SFO after the UNLV game. He came a little after us…would have been interesting going through security with him. Good insights about the game from him…and he gave me his new email address for the next big Karaoke Call… 🙂

Quite a bit of BSU’s team had to miss practice on Saturday due to the flu that is going around the team. Having the flu going through the team could explain why BSU has struggled in some of their recent games and it could hurt their preparation for UH.

Coach Chris Petersen said nine players and two coaches missed practice Saturday with illnesses as the flu continues to go through his team.

Wasup Doc did make an offer to shave her head if Stretch made his goal and exceeded $3,000.

unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, NO ONE accepted the offer and thus no legal and binding contract.

    that was our bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  78. Committed Road Warrior October 19, 2009 12:28 pm

I didn’t know that some college football playoff supporters have formed an official PAC (political action committee):

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2010094674_apuscollegefootballpac.html

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers who have been trying to prod college football to replace the Bowl Championship Series with a playoff system now have the Washington equivalent of a booster club: a political action committee.

A group of college football fans launched the Playoff PAC Monday with the goal of electing similarly minded members of Congress. The hope is that if there’s enough pressure from Congress, the BCS – a complex system of computer rankings and polls that often draws criticism – will voluntarily change to a playoff system. The BCS released its first standings of the season on Sunday.

  80. al October 19, 2009 12:35 pm

ahouse…..i don’t think it was an offer rather than a statement or declaration of duty upon attainment of a stated goal. it did not need to be rectified nor certified since it was more of a dare than anything else.

it is the same as if the governor declares that if a volunteer furlough is not accepted then reduction in force will be implemented.

    mwhahahaha

  85. al October 19, 2009 12:48 pm

no worry about the flu. bsu has a lot of talent and are very deep. if anything they are a true testament to hard work, discipline, and team work pays off. not to mention that they come to play every game and expect to win. are well prepared and prepare themselves well.

    they prepare for miracles.

  86. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2009 12:48 pm

    bighilofan2,

i couldn’t make it to the luncheon =(. i agree with you that we need to let the coaches talk about their recruiting strategy before we worry too much. i think the “no LA recruiting” thing might be just a misunderstanding. Mack was supposedly a good recruiter at T-Tech so I don’t think he would necessarily jeopardize the recruiting efforts by limiting the number of kids we could potentially get.

  87. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2009 12:56 pm

    Garret,

Interesting thing about the JC coach not getting a phone call back. Sad =(.

I do agree 100% that we must use every penny of our budget wisely. We dont have the super huge recruiting budgets like the bigger schools. I am curious though, if JJ was going for kids regardless of Hawaii ties on a smaller budget…..Why now with what seems to be a 100% increase in our recruiting budget do we need to only focus on kids with Hawaii ties? Wasn’t the point of increasing our recruiting budget to be more competitive on the mainland and give us more flexibility? What are your thoughts?

  88. bighilofan2 October 19, 2009 1:00 pm

i heard that too, that Mack was a great recruiter at T Tech.

thats why it was a mystery to me that there was that kind of confusion involving the Okla WR standout, who wanted to come Hawaii but had to settle for Tulsa.

and why its a mystery to me about the Harbor JC coach’s calls and Rainbow Cliff’s emails going unanswered.

and why I’m thinking there’s scrunch in the underwear one level down.

and i’m trying to point out the problem child so we don’t have a problem child anymore.

my point is: Houston Coach Mack, you got a problem. And its making you look bad. Fix it!

  89. koakane™ October 19, 2009 1:01 pm

    letsgowarriors,

what we have here…. is a Failure… to Communicate.

and the problem also is that the Failure to Communicate… is going on at several different levels.

between the assistant coaches and their outsources….

between the Coach and his assistant coaches.

since the problem has been exposed, the bottom line is: FIX IT!
make the call. no need make like we’re all p.o., however it came out, its come out. no make like you’re all huhu because your laziness has been pointed out for the world to see. heck, we’ve seen it 4 saturdays in a row. We’re a 2-4 team. We’re headed towards a 3-11 season. Pride betta get outta da way. We want to avoid da 3-11 season. Coach can do that! Just gotta suck it up and do what we must!

sheesshhhhh, da truth is out. some assistant coaches are Lazy!

    oh.. oh…. awaiting odoration.

  110. The Attitude Adjuster October 19, 2009 1:39 pm

IIRC, Doc did qualify her “statement/offer” by words to the effect, are there any takers?

which in my simple mind is an offer and if none accepted, then suck wind!!!

  112. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2009 1:45 pm

    Bighilo,

I think the assistants aside from tormey and shaw don’t have any experience recruiting at the div 1 level so I’m guessing while the other assistants are still learning some things might be slipping here and there. Just a guess

  113. bighilofan2 October 19, 2009 1:47 pm

    AHouse,

if this coming Saturday we surround Doc and blow at her ear, maybe da hair will all fall off. you go first….

  114. A-House October 19, 2009 1:48 pm

Common courtesy out weighs all excuses.

Like bighilo2 says, “just fix it!” Call the Harbor JC coach, apologize, and ask for the information needed – heck we may be missing on a #1 draft pick!

  115. bighilofan2 October 19, 2009 1:51 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

you might be right. and I give them the mulligan, all of them.

but since a problem has aired here publicly, my point of view is that the coach make the P.R. call, say howzit howzit to da coach, let em know we got da message and we’ll be getting back to da identified caller… say… next Wednesday. sumtin like dat. make nice. da coach is nice. den point out to the recruiter for that area, or that expertise, to get on it before next week, no make all habut, just get on it. make an honest evaluation its not like we got everything going our way, coming off these many losses and/or excuses.

heck, some of these coaches might not be here next year. after all, its a business, or something like that.

  116. Slugger October 19, 2009 1:58 pm

    idontknowwhytheyhateme,

Missed you at lunch. Pride. was there. I got my question in.

    Don Weir says:

One bike (the 2nd one) should be here for the weekend. Na Koa paid the extra shipping and we’re hoping it’s here for a photo-op with BHF2. The first bike is in LV; waiting to be released to a shipper who contracts with Hawaii Air Cargo (?) to get it back to HNL. The last problem, of many, was having the seller get a letter to the original shipper to authorize a change to the routing. Did I get this right, Don?

Coach Lumpkin gave us a defense lesson showing us what he means by ‘fit’ on the plays. I learned something, but not enough to give you a detailed transcript. You’ll have to wait till the Na Koa report is posted or for Pride. He did say that everyone wants to win: coaches, players, fans. They don’t play to lose, so keep up the support. [Ex.: Look back at the 2004 season. What was our record before the last 3 games? Who did we play the last 3 games of 2004 & what was the outcome?] Lots of new players in the game, previously non-starters, and they still have work to do. Reps will help get them that ‘unconscious competence’ (thanks, Pride.).

Great greens, tako poke, pasta salad w/ artichoke hearts (yum), teri shortribs, Chinese style opakapaka, rice, bread pudding.

  117. postmanke October 19, 2009 2:01 pm

The Triple Option contracting stars will align and once again the WAC Universe will be ours..

  120. (Jesse) James October 19, 2009 2:30 pm

Good afternoon Tsaikos…hope all have been having a good day…

Speedy recovery for Bradley…get well, work out, and prep for next season…you are going to be awesome.

I tend to agree with others on this blog. Go down fighting and just make a game of it…that’s all I want to see. For whatever reason, this team seems to lack leadership, heart, and a will to win. I can’t put my finger on it but I just don’t feel/see it with this team as I did with the teams of the past. It is probably time to look to the future. I, for one, would like to see some of the younger guys get some playing time so that they will gain valuable experience for next year and the years beyond.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  121. Garret October 19, 2009 2:35 pm

    WarriorMojo,

Nope, they are two very different people! The LA Harbor coach actually wants Mac and the Warriors to succeed…Duff definitely has a grudge.

  122. lil's October 19, 2009 2:37 pm

    35-31 UH wins!

  123. Garret October 19, 2009 2:37 pm

Mac’s weekly press conference is up on UH’s website now. I think this is the second or third straight week where Mac mentioned that they focused on the red zone in practice.

    On losing four straight games…
It’s tough. In our business, you don’t want to lose one straight. It’s frustrating, but the thing is, you’ve got to move on. The players’ efforts were very good throughout the game. As a team, we have some problems that we have to solve. We have to finish on offense, we had two dropped balls in the end zone. On defense, we have to start making plays.

There are some things we have to get consistent with. I’m going to focus on the positives and as for the negatives, we’ve got to improve on. We really focused on red zones last week on both sides of the ball and we need to focus more. We really focused on third down, especially defensively.

  124. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2009 2:37 pm

  128. bighilofan2 October 19, 2009 2:46 pm

    WarriorMojo,

George Swade is the head coach at Harbor. This is his 3rd stint, according to the Harbor Times article dated 3/5/09. He wasn’t there last year. And I don’t know if he was the guy who called/emailed some coach over here. don’t even know the coach’s name here, except from da comments above.

and da rioting. c’mon Mojo, you know when I riot. and I’m not jumpin to conclusions. i’m saying dat trying to fix da prolem alluded to in 47, 67, 101, what is wrong with just telling FIX DA PROBLEM. MAKE DA CALL. das not a riot…. das gentle persuasion. a riot is when we lose
    10 in a row.

  129. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2009 2:47 pm

it aint rioting at all. if there is a problem us fans take it personally and we not only have the right but the heart and love for the team to want to point it out and ask for things to be corrected. i stand by you on this one!

    go warriors!

  131. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2009 2:51 pm

    Here’s my take:
One of the jobs of a high school coach is to get college scholarships for his players.
One of the jobs of a JC coach is to get Division I scholarships for his players.
One of the jobs of a Division I coach is to get NFL opportunities for his players.
High school coaches don’t rip college coaches.
JC coaches don’t rip Division I coaches.
Division I coaches don’t rip NFL people.
To do so is to cut ties.
There are a lot of talented players at a lot of schools.
UH is doing its diligence in recruiting.

  132. bighilofan2 October 19, 2009 3:02 pm

    Here’s my take:

we have infighting. its sly, and subtle…

thats why we can’t quite put our fingers on it yet.

    and its affecting our program.

thats why someone should point out this JC telecall/email miscom to Coach. he can nip it in da bud, make so its not a problem at all, and get on his coaches to do a better job in their P.R.

cuz obviously its a problem if we’re talking about it.

  133. bighilofan2 October 19, 2009 3:05 pm

of course, i’ve guessed wrong before. and my guess is based partly on a good faith belief in others. and they coulda been partly guessin too.
    won’t be the first time.

  134. Pride. October 19, 2009 3:07 pm

Bryant Moniz is better than Colt Brennan was after two games. Doesn’t mean that Moniz will be better in the end. Just saying that Moniz is good. Warriors are really young all the way around. They don’t really have that many guys who are playing in the “unconscious competent” quadrant or level. Will take about two or three years before we get enough guys playing at that level in order to be competitive day in and day out. Even our upperclassmen don’t have that much playing time under their belts. We watch the NFL and can see how much of a difference experience makes. The same is true for college football.

Compare this year’s number of guys playing at the fourth level or quadrant and compare that to the ’06 and ’07 teams and I’m sure that you will see a big difference.

    This year’s fourth level guys?

    2009

    John Estes
    Greg Salas

    Mr. Tsai,

To what degree would Mack (if he is willing) be able to talk about issues that have been brought up today without being in any violation of NCAA rules etc etc etc.???

I missed todays luncheon but will try and get a question in when i get another chance.

  136. WarriorMojo October 19, 2009 3:08 pm

    WarriorMojo,

Nope, they are two very different people! The LA Harbor coach actually wants Mac and the Warriors to succeed…Duff definitely has a grudge.

Garret, are you sure? “Bulltrout” has signed off on a number of his posts as “Duff”. He’s also identified himself as a DB coach, not the head coach. Also, I don’t think he really does want Mack to succeed. He just says he does to cause more damage. He also hates Tsai.

You can be anybody you want to be on the internet, but I think this might actually be Duff.

  137. ProudArmyWife808 October 19, 2009 3:10 pm

Whew. This haole lady confused; there’s obviously more going on that meets the eye. bighilofan2… nice poem in post 34. “oh yes i’m sad, so sad and blue, things are so bad, and here comes BSU.” Quite the creative mind you’ve got. ;o)

warriormojo, duff is bulltrout. harbor coach is rabidbull.

  141. Pride. October 19, 2009 3:22 pm

Defensively, I think that the Warriors are going to be fine. Football is a game of inches and the Warriors are a few inches away form being a good defensive football team. Offensively we have a good quarterback. We have a terrific slot and had a really good wideout. Kealoha Pilares has a lot of talent and will come around. All three running backs are pretty good at running the ball, but will have to be more consistent at pass blocking. The offensive line needs to continue showing improvement.

  142. kokua October 19, 2009 3:22 pm

most on wsn know who bulltrout is–he identified himself–there are the few exceptions still in the dark…lol.

  144. Garret October 19, 2009 3:24 pm

    WarriorMojo,

It could be a diabolical ruse, I’ll give you that. But the way the person made requests on SportsHawaii for contact information for UH coaches because he said his calls/e-mails weren’t being returned seemed sincere. However, I’ve been fooled before.

The person knew immediately which UH coach attended that JC and knew the eligibility status (4 to play 3, 3 to play 2, 2 to play 2) of all of their D-IA recruits. That person went to a lot of work if he was faking. Of course, if someone had a grudge they could do all that work…but then wouldn’t they post it here instead of in a thread on a different forum that got buried pretty quickly?

  145. kokua October 19, 2009 3:26 pm

  150. Garret October 19, 2009 3:34 pm

Bryant Moniz did extremely well in his first two games, far better than a QB would be expected coming off the bench…especially one that didn’t get much reps with the first team offense. His mobility was very important in the Idaho game and he showed he can make plays.

The major problem right now with the offense is in the red zone, but that was a problem when Alexander was at QB also. Red zone problems were a big factor in the UNLV game, and UH would have been ahead at halftime against Idaho with an average success rate in the red zone. I’m glad that Mac mentioned that they will focus on their red zone offense/defense this week.

letsgo….rabidbull been touting that jc for awhile now. only since we got jeramy bryant and had shown some interest in trudnowski. however, we got alexander instead.

hopefully the lifelines are still open at any and all jc’s. we could use a few good jc’ers every year to fill voids. i am of the belief that getting those who have 4 for 3 is optimal but, more of a rarity rather than the norm. then, getting those who have 3 for 2. in all cases, though, we should be looking at early qualifiers who can come in january.

at least i know what he truly is under that name.
at least he has the ***** to show face.

  162. Garret October 19, 2009 3:48 pm

The coaches mentioned they were spending a lot of the week before the Louisiana Tech game working on the red zone offense. They came out with the I formation and we haven’t seen that since.

The coaches mentioned they were working on the red zone offense the week before the Fresno State game as they were aware of the problems. UH had 2 TDs in the red zone in that game, but both came in the 4th quarter after Fresno State had put in their reserves. At least that significantly raised UH’s red zone stats or UH would be at the bottom of the national stats.

Mac said that the coaches focused on the red zone the week before the Idaho game. Three red zone attempts for just 10 points is why UH was losing at halftime…people are blaming the defense for not stopping the run or for making too many mistakes, but Idaho only had 14 points at halftime. The coaches did do a great job of surprising Idaho with the ‘Noke formation for the first TD, but Idaho adjusted in future drives and UH didn’t adjust back.

  163. al October 19, 2009 3:49 pm

i don’t think rabidbull is the head coach but perhaps an asst or staffer. at one time a couple of years ago, i thought him to be a player’s parent.

the main concern should be what conversations transpires between their head coach and our folks.

i believe that jeramy bryant would give good testimony to our program.

  169. al October 19, 2009 3:55 pm

red zone woes…again i will reiterate my opinion here.

first and five. pick up three yards on first down. at that point, jam it down their throats for the next three yards. let the boys in the trenches go at it mano a mano. let them earn some respect.

first and goal at the ten. hey, again. go into a spread offense ala paul johnson. triple option from a passing team gives that fourth dimension (the pass) that should worry any offense. again, let the oline earn their chajones. two backs could also provide protection and escorts. moniz is the perfect qb for this as well. use our strengths.

from the twenty, quick routes. misdirectional routes. delayed patterns. use the running back, employ the big slotback. i’d like to see tua get into the game here.

a lot has to do with our play calling.

  170. kama krab October 19, 2009 3:59 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Ho kind of getting nutz around here. So what is this whole thing about, U.H. not returning peoples calls. All I gotta say is give the coach a call out of courtesy. If you are not interested in what he has for you let him know don’t leave him hanging. I understand that there maybe hundreds of coaches calling and emailing about prospects that they have that would be willing to come to Hawaii and it is the job of the coaches and the recruiting coordinator to get back to them. I understand that there is not enough time in a day to reply to each and every inquiry but it needs to get done. This is just part of the job. The coaches have to make as much contacts as possible and they also have to keep these contacts happy so that they keep feeding Hawaii solid D-1 prospects.

I am not going into the whose who on WSN and SH but if this is the case with the La Harbor Coach then something needs to be fixed cause no one deserves to be treated like that especially when they are trying to send you prospects.

But of course there is always two sides of the story, so if there is a problem fix it if not then this whole thing is a bunch of hot air.

  171. al October 19, 2009 3:59 pm

westside….not a problem with attending cc’s. but, if you local and attend games drop by at the tailgate. talk story, have a few, feed your face, throw some ball with the old guys, pitch a horseshoe, feed your face, and whatevers all in good fun.

no need be at each other’s throat. we all human and we all can be friends even if we disagree on stuff.

we all tease each other and we all laugh at each other and with each other.

Wondering if the coaching staff has considered incorporating Huen into the short yardage game plan.

  176. Garret October 19, 2009 4:05 pm

a lot has to do with our play calling.

    Al,

I completely agree with you…though there have been execution problems (dropped passes especially) that have hurt also. The coaches know it is a problem because they talk about it every week and say they are working to fix it (though I didn’t like that they spent a week to come up with the I formation for La Tech). They players know it is a problem and Moniz called it “heartbreaking”.

If UH had an average success rate in the red zone, I think they would be at least 4-2. This is not a talent problem, as the offense is talented enough to move down the field in almost every game. If UH was 4-2, we wouldn’t be having all the critics and the attendance for the BSU game would be a lot better!

  177. westsidesview October 19, 2009 4:06 pm

al, I tailgate at the garage with neighbors.

  178. Garret October 19, 2009 4:10 pm

Cal only had 10 players on defense, but they still intercepted UCLA and returned the INT for a TD! Nice video of the play.

  179. kama krab October 19, 2009 4:11 pm

    Re: Red Zone,

This is just my opinion and watching the first 6 games.

What I saw JJ do many times in the red zone is either spread people out with 5 wide and do quick outs with the slots or he would do things equivalent to pick plays. What I also say was JJ doing under the center plays and doing play-action roll outs.

These are very simple plays with alot of options.

I also like what Al said. Go under center and man up. We have the big boys up front to do it. The boyz just gotta want it more then there counterparts on the D-line.

But of course we can suggest anything we want but it all comes down to play calling and calling the right play at the right time.

    Pretty please?

    ok

  182. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2009 4:18 pm

I’m not sure what is or isn’t going on at the WSN.
Not that it’s not interesting. Just don’t have time to float from site to site.
Anyway, about a month ago, some guy named Mel wanted me to tell the UH coaches to visit the WSN.
I’m thinking, yeah, Pepsi tells people to try Coca-Cola.
So I think that’s why a lot of WSN folks come over.
    More the merrier, I suppose.
I think if folks wish to vent, they’re going to vent. I guess it’s better than holding it in and imploding.
But if they think they’re going to affect change, I’m afraid that’s not gong to happen. We all think we have better ideas. Heck, I think my ideas are a lot better. But guess what? That’s what happens when a team is struggling. Everybody thinks they know better. People can keep making suggestions, but in the end, the coaches will do it their way. As they should.

  183. kama krab October 19, 2009 4:18 pm

Sorry for ther reference back to the JJ years but just trying to find things that worked back then and that could work for the team we have this year.

I think that 5 wide could work especially with Salas and a sure handed John Medeiros on either side. I mean you could do a quick slant with Salas inside and do a quick out with Medeiros and have the other receivers clear out. I mean it could work but it might not. It’s just an idea.

But it comes down to calling the right play and of course execution of the play that makes all the difference.

  184. Garret October 19, 2009 4:22 pm

If we look at the national stats for the red zone, UH is #116 out of #120 D-IA teams. However, UH only scores TDs 37% of the time in the red zone, much lower than #120 Kent State (TDs 58% of the time they get into the red zone), so UH scores less than all but New Mexico when in the red zone.

If you take away the 2 TDs against Fresno State’s reserves in the 4th quarter (when Fresno State stopped blitzing and just went to a vanilla D), UH would be the worst in the country in red zone scoring percentage and TDs scored when in the red zone.

  185. Garret October 19, 2009 4:26 pm

Mac said today that UH had to work on its red zone defense. I had focused so much on the lack of scoring in the red zone that I hadn’t paid attention to that stat. Looking up the national stats, I see why Mac said that UH’s coaches will focus on red zone D this week.

UH is #94 in red zone D this season, with opponents scoring 89% of the time they get into the red zone. Even worse is that opponents score TDs 74% of the time they get into the red zone, which is much worse than most of the teams below UH in the red zone rankings.

  186. Garret October 19, 2009 4:28 pm

    To summarize:

UH scores TDs 37% of the time they get into the red zone, Opponents score TDs 74% of the time they get into the red zone against UH…twice as often!

  187. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2009 4:28 pm

    Mr. Tsai,

The coaches will do what they want to do. Thats what they get paid to do anyway. I know that what I say on here will never be taken into consideration, but its a good outlet to get ones feelings out.

The proof will be in the pudding in our W-L ratio at the end of 5 years…and even then, as Lou Holtz would say regarding coaches “It’s not about what you did for me, its about what you have been doing lately.”

  188. kama krab October 19, 2009 4:39 pm

    Garret #188,

Those stats are very disheartening because we have a better team than that. I think it comes down to wanting it more on defense and excuting better on offense.

This team has the talent just need to work on it so red zone becomes second nature.

  189. kama krab October 19, 2009 4:50 pm

    ST #183,

I totally agree with you on this. You know people can yell, bitch, moan, and cry all they want but all they are doing is blowing alot of hot air because when it comes down to it the coaches make the final call.

I will totally stand by them and if I have suggestion of course I will make through this blog but of course I would not expect anything said here to be taken into consideration unless the coaches feels that a suggestion needs to be considered.

  190. SteveM October 19, 2009 5:01 pm

WarriorMojo — I gave you a black polo shirt once. What it says is what you are and it is well deserved.

  191. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2009 5:03 pm

Don’t get me wrong. I think many of the suggestions are good ones.
People in Hawai‘i know their football.
But it’s the coaches’ job to make decisions. They study videos and collect more information than we’ll ever have access to. So, there’s usually a reason for their decision.
For instance, there’s a player whom everybody thinks should get more playing time. Trouble is, the guy has just been struggling in practices. They just don’t feel he’s ready. The coaches won’t embarrass the kid by saying he’s not ready or that he’s struggling. So they say nothing. And take the hits.

  192. bstunna2002 October 19, 2009 5:09 pm

Whoa easy Bhf I was just stating the fact in what Mcmackin said his recruiting strategy would be,his first year he recruited alot of jc’s cause of the time frame he had, last year we got relatively less jc’s and this years recruitng seems to be focused on hs with the exception of maybe going after some jc linemen who can play right away. He’s following Boise’s lead and we all would like to have the program they have right?

Now that Oakland is finally starting Samson, their coach reviews the tape of his play and praises Samson after their win.

Cable’s biggest praise went to center Samson Satele, who just might keep the job he lost to Chris Morris once left guard Robert Gallery comes back from a broken leg.

“He was great. He really was. He is developing. He is improving. He’s bringing his game to the level that we hoped he would when we traded for him. But the thing I’m excited for him is he is starting to get command of the system. I think the center has to be like the quarterback in many ways, and there is some stuff on tape today that was really big time by him, so we’ve just got to keep it going.”

Several years ago, there was a former UH football player who bought a bar in Waikiki. Nice little place. Affordable drinks. Good atmosphere. And a really good mix of clientele.
And then these two guys — well known, actually — showed up. Every night. And drank up. And hit on the women, and not in a nice way. And soon, the clientele change.
To which it must be noted: We used to have a lot more women on this blog.

  204. wafan October 19, 2009 5:42 pm

    Mr. Tsai . . .

You may want to consider removing my posts 197 and 198 as they are now strangely out of place.

Red zone problems turn games that should be wins (UNLV) into close losses.

Red zone problems turn games that should be close and possible wins into blowout losses (La Tech, Fresno State, Idaho).

Red zone success can turn games that should be blowouts into close games (lots of examples of this where one team dominates every category but the score is close or they lose).

I went through the drive charts in the 4-game losing streak and the red zone play can be pointed to as critical in each game. I know that the players can do it and the coaching staff can do it, so I hope that they get this turned around soon.

So the new rule is: Be likeable.
Yes, we’re all smart. Shoot, I even have a college degree, so it doesn’t take much to be smart.
But let’s cut out the mean undertones and other annoying posts.
You wanna criticize. Feel free. But do it in a fun way.
I’ve heard people tell me the blog isn’t that much fun to read anymore. Largely because of a few people. (Some with multiple personalities.) Hey, this is my blog, and I’m, like, rolling my eyes a lot.
    So, class: be likeable.
Or I’m gonna zap your posts.

    BHF,

I can see frustrations over an alleged no reply or call back but maybe their waiting to see what some of these kids can do on the field before they make contact or show interest, I cant really answer for the coaches but I as a fan of this program choose to give the benefit of the doubt until everything is presented,Now I could see if Mr.#1 recruit in the country has openly said Hawaii is his school of choice but we dont make any effort to contact I can understand the frusrtation in that but again until we are all in the real know everything is speculation.

    # Stephen Tsai:
    October 19th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

Don’t get me wrong. I think many of the suggestions are good ones.
People in Hawai‘i know their football.
But it’s the coaches’ job to make decisions. They study videos and collect more information than we’ll ever have access to. So, there’s usually a reason for their decision.
For instance, there’s a player whom everybody thinks should get more playing time. Trouble is, the guy has just been struggling in practices. They just don’t feel he’s ready. The coaches won’t embarrass the kid by saying he’s not ready or that he’s struggling. So they say nothing. And take the hits.

This is the feeling that I’ve been having the past two seasons. I feel like the coaches have been holding back some promising talent to make sure that when they do come into the game, they are ready to make a difference and not get embarrassed or unfairly judged. I like that about our coaching staff and I will wait the 4-5 years before judging any of their coaching abilities or savvy.

points well made….thank you for attempting to monitor the incantations of the lost here on WB…..everyone is still wedged in this quagmire of a season, and it’s going to take awhile before we can all crawl out of it…..but we were Warriors before the season started, and we will be Warriors when the dust settles. #209 and #211 — hooray! lurker since the beginning; first time poster. truly was getting wearing to read the WB. the most bothersome is the jumping to the conclusion that the coach(es) truly did not doing something just because “someone” said so, and the ranting, raving and literally trying to order the coach to call. how do we know IN FACT that a call was made in the first place or that a call back was not made? it may very well be that there was a response, but because it wasn’t the answer that “coach” wanted, he’s saying the UH coach never responded — there are many people who operate like this. Bottom line: let the coaches do their job. very distressing to see supposed loyal fans IMMEDIATELY jump on the coaches for not doing something, when we don’t even know. thank you ST for #211. hopefully reading the blog will once again become one of the highlights of my day.

  219. Garret October 19, 2009 6:18 pm

    wafan,

The interesting thing about the stats is that UH is still 15th in the nation in total offense. The offense is moving the ball, but the red zone problems are stopping the team from scoring. 15th best until the offense gets into the red zone, 116th best in the red zone, and 119th best in points in the red zone if you count TDs more than FGs (I prefer to look at points rather than counting FGs and TDs equally). So, the offense goes from 15th best to 119th best (out of 120 teams in D-IA) when it hits the red zone.

Okay, that is my last red zone post for a week. I’ll update this if I have time in future weeks.

  220. Kazz (blkberry_storm) October 19, 2009 6:22 pm

Got my “momento” from UH for Coach Shoji’s 1000th win.

Its a 8×10 collage-type thing with a big photo of Coach Shoji and the bench as the 1000th win was solidified along the edge of the print are old school photos of the coach and the wahine over the years. It also has a facsimile autograph of “Mahalo for the support, Dave Shoji” underneath the final box score against NMSU.

They stamp the back of your ticket, but at least they let you keep it.

Kind of a late comment, I read all the posts on recruiting JC players and so forth. Question, has anyone here asked Coach Mack about his recruiting policies? Also isn’t it improper for Mack to even comment about which players he is looking at? So for all we know while we wonder why he has not contacted certain players, he has already contacted them and were told to keep things quiet. Further more the story on the Oklahoma HS WR is far from complete and most of what I am reading is conjecture. Mack has been clear about his recruiting plans and has laid out a strategy to turn things around. While it may be frustrating not to know all the specifics, under present rules he is unable to defend himself with exact player information. This is one of those times where we are going to have to trust him, kinda of a blind faith. While I am not privy to who he is recruiting, he has a plan. What would disappoint me most is if he changed his plan of attack because us arm chair fans forced him to.

As an WB Oldtimer, I’m grateful that you’ll take back the blog. This Blog means a lot to me, for various reason, but it almost came to the point of cringe worthy, and I have to even include some of the oldtimers

I like your analogy with the Waikiki Bar, that’s what’s almost happened here.

Let’s just recall 2005, that should put everything in the proper perspective, and no, Garret, no analyses needed, lol. This is College, this season is far from over.

You have to be the mayor, the WB has become too big, not to have one.

On top of that, they receive over 100 DVD’s a week from unsolicited players they are supposed to watch. Take out the fans, parents and recruits, there are hundreds of JC programs emailing the coaches. Hopefully they will all get a response eventually, but Im sure there is a core group they work with and areas they dont (at least it is that way with most colleges) . I know during JJ’s reign, UH didnt even keep track of where the athletes went, now at least they are following the boys careers at the JCs to see if they are worth bringing home.

The line between winning and losing is often razor thin, and almost every game will turn on 4 to 5 plays to decide the outcome, pretty much everybody knows this, right?

I literally could make a case that we could be just as well 6 – 0, with a few plays going our way, rather then 2 – 4.

Just like 2005, we have talent, but no real game experience, that includes most of our seniors. What I’m hoping for is an epiphany like during Roloviches final year and the proverbial light switched on and we be became literally unstoppable.

We have a pretty cool cat at QB, the O-line keeps improving, we have some great WR( hang on to the ball), servicable running backs who are due for a break-out. Our D will have to simlyfy our sceems and start swarming to the ball, but most of all, we need some leaders who can motivate this team to play as one and just slightly over their heads.

So, my fellow Tsaikos, 7 more games to go, anything can happen, no reason to give up, remember, this is college, anything can happen.

While it’s no secret we have red zone problems, at least we had the ball in the receivers hands in the end zone. No excuse for the drops but at least the plays were there. Also the fake FG would have been real close if the RB turned to his left or outside instead of inside which caused him to lose two or three steps to the defender. We are making progress and maybe that is all we can expect this year. If the progress speeds up a bit we could be in for a season ending surprise.

I am really looking forward to the rest of the year. I am looking to see who will step up and give that little something that will tell us fan’s that “hey we go something here”. I am waiting to see the team turn the corner going into next year. I am not conceding this year just yet but just saying, it is time for the young guns to start shooting because there will be some major competition come next year with some of the redshirt guys. Also I am looking for the coaches to grow also and see what kind of adjustments they will make going into the final 7 games of the season. Last year we made some decent adjustments and all I am asking for is to make more.

I am really happy that we have a coaching staff that is willing to put in the extra hours to figure out what is going on with the team because I no for a fact that they are putting in big time hours. There is no need to question that and thank them for that.

I am really looking forward to rest of the season and the future, cause believe me, it will be a very bright future as I see it now.

An elderly woman went to her local doctor’s office and asked to speak with her doctor. When the receptionist asked why she was there, she replied, “I’d like to have some birth control pills.”

Taken back, the doctor thought for a minute and then said, “Excuse me, Mrs. Glenwood, but you’re 80 years old. What would you possibly need birth control pills for?”

The woman replied, “They help me sleep better.”

The doctor considered this for a second, and continued… “How in the world do birth control pills help you sleep?”

The woman said, “I put them in my granddaughter’s orange juice, and I sleep better at night.”

Mister, why doesn’t this cow have any horns?” asked the young lady from Boise. The farmer cocked his head for a moment, then began in a patient tone, “Well, ma’am, cattle can do a powerful lot of damage with horns. Sometimes we keep’em trimmed down with a hacksaw. Other times we can fix up the young ‘uns by puttin’ a couple drops of acid where their horns would grow in, and that stops ’em cold. Still, there are some breeds of cattle that never grow horns. But the reason this cow don’t have no horns, ma’am, is ’cause it’s a horse.”

A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named “Amal.” The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him “Juan”. Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his mum. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds, “But they are twins. If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Amal.”

A man asked his wife what she’d like for her 40th birthday. “I’d love to be six again,” she replied. On the morning of her birthday, he got her up bright and early and off they went to a local theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park: the Death Slide, the Screaming Loop, the Wall of Fear, everything there was! Wow! Five hours later she staggered out of the theme park, her head reeling and her stomach upside down. Right to a McDonald’s they went, where her husband ordered her a Happy Meal along with extra fries and a refreshing chocolate shake. Then, it was off to a movie – the latest Disney and what a fabulous adventure!

Finally, she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed. He leaned over and lovingly asked, “Well, dear, what was it like being six again?” One eye opened. “You idiot, I meant my dress size.” The moral of this story is: When a woman speaks and a man is actually listening, he will still get it wrong.

Two elderly couples were enjoying friendly conversation when one of the men asked the other, “Fred, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?”

“Outstanding,” Fred replied. “They taught us all the latest psychological techniques – visualization, association – it’s made a big difference for me.”

“That’s great! What was the name of that clinic?” Fred went blank. He thought and thought but couldn’t remember. Then a smile broke across his face and he asked, “What do you call that flower with the long stem and thorns?”

    “You mean a rose?”

“Yes, that’s it!” He turned to his wife. “Rose, what was the name of that clinic?”

    Rasu Begasu #273,

No doubt losing by 30 is not fun but the game itself will always be fun. The game has not changed from Pop Warner days and it will not change even in the pro’s. This game like other sports where created for the kids and kids at heart. The fun will never leave the game and the game will always be fun.

If the game where not fun, then who would play. You don’t play a game just so you can get paid someday, you play because you have fun doing what you do.

You gotta have some kind of fun in everything that you do or else you would have such a boring life. =)

A woman woke up one morning to find a ferocious-looking gorilla in a tree on her African plantation. She quickly phoned the local game warden, who arrived minutes later. In one hand he held a shotgun, and in the other the leash of a fierce Doberman pinscher. As they walked to the tree, the warden explained, “What’s going to happen is that I go up the tree, throw the gorilla out, and the dog clamps his teeth on the gorilla’s allas.” The woman nodded and was surprised when he handed her the gun. “You know how to use this?” he asked. “I do,” she said, “but what’s it for?” The warden replied, “Well ….. sometimes the gorillas are pretty tough and throw me out of the tree. If that happens, I want you to do one thing.” “Shoot the gorilla?” “No,” he answered, “the dog

    A-House:
Like I said, people can be critical all they wish.
Keep a coach. Fire a coach.
    Good play. Bad play.
    Fine with me.
But when there’s constant bickering, and then really annoying comments — I mean, is Kool Aid a proverbial dead horse for I’m-so-right-and-you’re not? — that soon there are only eight people in the room.
I’m tired of watching certain posters fight pointlessly. And, when I look up and all of the Pink side people have departed, well, it’s time for the blog host to step in.
    Greater good.
Besides, I know the players and their families read this. Hey, my family reads this. Think I want to subject them to some of the daily annoyances.
So, like it or not, I’m going to take back the blog for the silent majority who want to come here for an escape, smart debates and a little entertainment.

  290. kama krab October 19, 2009 10:08 pm

    Kama Crab,
You’re right the game has to be fun.
But its a lot more fun when you win.

I don’t think the boys had a lot of fun in Van Appens last year
I don’t think my Redskins are having such a great time either
But we are just on the sidelines watching (and in my case paying the cable guys to watch).
It would be fun if we play Boise close all the way, but it would be a lot more fun if we beat Boise.

    For the FEMALE bloggers
In this life I’m a woman.

In my next life, I’d like to come back as a bear. When you’re a bear, you get to hibernate.
You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that. Before you hibernate, you’re supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that, too.

When you’re a girl bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you’re sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that.

If you’re a mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that.

If you’re a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat.

    Yup… gonna be a bear.

    A-House,

Very good point. I am not saying being negative is a good way of expressing your desire, want, and belief in our teams success but if thats the way some people do it, so be it. If they express negative comments and don’t care about UH, hey whatever, wont be the first, wont be the last…so Mazaltah!

We aren’t saving any lives here, so whether positive or negative, I read and digest all the comments and take it for what its worth.

    Volleyball stuffs from tonight’s match:

-Wow, they actually cleaned up the streamers that got caught on some of the overhead beams at the SSC.

-The Lady Techsters had a nice gesture to the Hawaii fans and players by tossing shirts into the crowd and during the pregame handshake, the Lady Techsters handed Mardi Gras beads to the Wahine players.

-LaTech doesn’t appear to be as bad as their record indicates.

-Alexis Forsythe had a good night starting the foundation for her own ROOFING company… 😉

-Good to see that Cat Fowler got some lengthy playing time. She seems like a great young lady from that article by Ann Miller a month ago in the Advertiser.

-Long time UH Wahine Volleyball fans are spoiled. Plain and simple. I mean LONG time Wahine volleyball supporters… Makes me wonder for the future when Coach Shoji decides he’s going to move on… Forget the pressure of following a 12-1 Sugar Bowl/WAC Championship team… Try to follow a 1,000+ win coach with several national titles to his name… (Notice how I didn’t say “four” national titles… 😎 )

Well… Gonna enjoy the replay to see if I can catch my own ugly okole on TV and off to bed!

She confronts her husband and asks for an explanation. He explains “Every time I was unfaithful to you, I put a golf ball in the drawer.” She figures 3 times in 30 years isn’t bad and asks “But what about the $1,000?” He replied “Whenever I got a dozen golf balls, I sold them”

An 80 year old couple were having problems remembering things, so they decided to go to their doctor to get checked out to make sure nothing was wrong with them.

When they arrived at the doctors, they explained to the doctor about the problems they were having with their memory. After checking the couple out, the doctor told them that they were physically okay but might want to start writing things down and make notes to help them remember things.

The couple thanked the doctor and left. Later that night while watching TV, the man got up from his chair and his wife asked, “Where are you going?” He replied, “To the kitchen.” She asked, “Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?” He replied, “Sure.” She then asked him, “Don’t you think you should write it down so you can remember it?” He said, “No, I can remember that.”

She then said, “Well I would also like some strawberries on top. You had better write that down because I know you’ll forget that.” He said, “I can remember that, you want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.” She replied, “Well I also would like whipped cream on top. I know you will forget that so you better write it down.”

With irritation in his voice, he said, “I don’t need to write that down! I can remember that.” He then fumes into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes he returned from the kitchen and handed her a plate of bacon and eggs. She stared at the plate for a moment and said angrily: “I TOLD you to write it down! You forgot my toast!”

During their silver anniversary, a wife reminded her husband: Do you remember when you proposed to me, I was so overwhelmed that I didn’t talk for an hour?” The hubby replied: “Yes, honey, that was the happiest hour of my life.”

this may get me in trouble, but it is the last one tonite,

A soldier was given the job of hunting for buffalo. To help him, he hired an Indian Scout. The two of them set off on their journey to find buffalo. After riding awhile, the Indian gets off his horse, puts his ear to the ground and says “Humm, buffalo come”. The soldier scans the area with his binoculars, but sees nothing. He is confused and says to the Indian, “I do not see anything, how do you know buffalo come”? and the Indian replies, “ear sticky”.

Kazz – I think the biggest thing the wahine will lose with the current seniors graduating, besides the spirit, is that the best servers are all seniors (Amber, Aneli, Jayme & Steph Brandt). Haven’t seen any of the underclassmen with a lethal serve like Amber’s and Aneli’s. Hopefully, they’ll develop over the off-season.

I’m only going to say this one last time…. this week…

SOMEONE TELL THE K-5 PRODUCERS TO STOP HAVING THEIR CAMERAS PAN THE “SLEEPY” PORTIONS OF THE SSC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT LOOKS HORRIBLE ON TV AND DOESN’T GIVE UH SPORTS A GREAT IMAGE!!!!!!

I’M SORRY, BUT IF YOU HAVE TO KEEP HAVING THE SAME STUDENTS OR MORE LIVELY PEOPLE ON TV THEN SO BE IT. IF I WAS TURNING ON THE TV TO UH SPORTS FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHY THE HECK WOULD I WANNA GO TO A GAME WHERE PEOPLE ARE SLEEPING!!!!

SO………….. STOP PUTTING THE DEADBEATS ON TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aye aye, ST! Raising the Blog Battle Ensign!

Breaking out the blog battle ensign for only the 2nd time in the last 3 years. The first time, the blog ship was in a similar situation and almost doomed to sink.

    From Wikipedia:

A battle ensign is the name given to a large war flag which is flown on a warship’s mast just before going into battle.

The flag identified the allegiance of the ship in what could be a very confusing situation… It was commonly accepted that so long as a ship flew its ensign it was an active participant in battle. If a ship surrendered then it would take down its ensigns (which was known as striking the colors)

The battle ensign was seen as an important element for the morale of the crew and was held in high regard. If a warship was sinking and had to be abandoned, flags such as the battle ensigns would be taken off the ship before it sank and were entrusted to the senior (surviving) officer.
    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The first time, the mighty pride. is crediting for pushing what was to become the blog battle ensign above the blog ship. Tonight, rasu begasu, our resident karaoke sumotori did the honors!

If you are not familiar with the blog battle ensign, it is described on the Tsai-ko Caricature web page. Bear in mind, this was 2.5 years ago…. 🙂

Good point. Right now Ferrell is somewhat inconsistent, Kanani can serve, but not with the authority or unpredictability of Kaufman and Brandt. While Jayme has nothing too special about her serve, she has been consistent and reliable. Liz Ka’aihue is good too, in fact I cannot remember a service error she’s had this season. Dunno if it’s a libero thing, but as with last season, Tara Hittle’s serve technique was pretty much just to get it over to the other side.

I think we’ll be ok and service errors won’t be much of an issue next year, but the power factor (Aneli) and the unpredicitability of how the ball is travelling off the server’s hand (i.e. Kaufman and Brandt) will be missed.

I think it’s more the guys in the truck or wherever. They’re the ones selecting the camera view for us to see, plus whoever is in charge of game production for television could make it clear to search out people that are actually moving, and if they’re not, then at least avoid those reading the paper and/or falling asleep.

Worse come to worse, focus in on the band or the student section when all else fails… this is ESPECIALLY important for the television image of UH sports when the basketball season starts!!!!!!!

  346. Slugger October 19, 2009 11:35 pm

Some of the questions about players not being put in the game could have been answered for you if you went to the Na Koa lunch. Lumpkin pointed out the good-bad-ugly (well, not much ugly ‘cept for Rodney’s break) in the videos he brought. Players are developing. No going to name names.

Saw Steve Stepter tonight before the VB game. Told him the exercise bike was coming.

    Don,

Your post earlier said something about it’s on a truck??? Like a kid from Kentucky at NAU asked one of our Kauai students, “How long did it take you to drive from Hawaii?” I hope the shipper is getting it to a FedEx distribution point.

Well, that’s Tua….he’s different. He wears an Afro, unlike the rest of the guys. The nail is a little dangerous. As a Mom, I was worried. As long as he isn’t wearing it in a game, at practice or when he’s making out. Don’t want him to get hurt before a game. Nail piercing…ugh!

    Aloha Tsaiko Ohana

Looking forward to seeing you at the Boise State tailgate.

Thank you, ST, for laying down the law. It has been ugly at times in here.

I don’t understand the craziness that breaks out in this anonomous blog world where people hide behind their fake names and claim and say anything to get a rise out of others. And they revel in the creating a cloud of suspicion and spreading of doubt about the competence and judgment of good people that many of us have met.

Snap and clear is a real good philosophy. Learn from the mistakes and do better next time. And I think we should trust that these coaches are working as hard as they can to get this situation turned around.

We were really spoiled by the Colt years. Pride’s post about the level of talent that we had during those years is very insightful. We’ve seen the Run and Shoot when every body was on the same page, and we want our fix again right now. I Believe that this group of coaches is capable of leading us back to that level, but it will take time.

It seems clear to me that this group of coaches has already produced two worthy heirs of the R&S tradition in Alexander and Moniz.

And I have to believe that Coach Mack will get the defensive side right again.

And I think that he has made the recruiting base much stronger than it ever was in JJ’s years.

We forget that JJ had his bad years too, that he made some calls that were mind boggling in how bad a situation they put the team in. Let’s give this group of coaches and players our support and trust. They deserve it. They are giving it all out there. Despite what some have said on here, I haven’t seen them give up this year. We shouldn’t give up on them so easily. Win or lose, they are our team.

  354. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 20, 2009 1:14 am

    Kama crab,

I have my reservations about criticizing players and I really think for the most part the fine line of making a honest observation can go south real quick and the line becomes thin and gray. Overall I think its an inappropriate thing to do, period.

Re: the coaches. I know you folks will not like my comment but I think it is very much OK to say whatever it is you want short of libel and defaming the Coaches. I say this primarily based upon 2 things…a cliche i know…but its free speech. 2nd, they are exempt state employees who are *paid* by our taxes and as “department” head of sorts, they are no more immune to criticisms than lets say the governor or her cabinet..

There is an exception to the above….and a big one at that. It is NOT A RIGHT to post comments on this board. If the owner (Tsai/Advertiser) says the rules are you can only post “GO WARRIORS”…well I am sorry but that’s the rules and you gotta play by them, if you dont like it, Aloha. This is a privately owned blog opened to the public for which I and a lot of people are grateful for the privilege to access and post.

I think Mr. Tsai has been more than accommodating to open the blog up to all sorts of comments even though they may not be popular or those he might disagree with or even when they may seem degrading to other people when he could very easily delete posts or ban people from posting. If Mr. Tsai wants to make sure we play nicely, hey I am fine with it because 1) I enjoy this place and 2) i dont believe I have defamed anyone to begin with and I dont plan to anytime soon.

In the end if you want to call the coach fat, or stupid, or clueless etc etc as I have seen in the past and its OK with the blog owners then go for it. I may not agree but I wont be losing sleep over it nor am I going to ask you to stop….I would however encourage people to be mindful of our student athletes and out of courtesy our fellow bloggers (please!). 🙂

The beauty of this blog is that the composition of posters are very reminiscent of the types of birds you see flying around.

We have the notorious/incessant parrots saying the same message over and over again, usually that of condemning Coach Mack

Singing the commendable praises of support for the Warriors we have a mix of canaries. Hands down this is the best group.

On the horizon are the mocking birds the arch enemy of the canaries

Then there’s the owls that can give a hoot to what’s going on. A lot of lurkers in this group.

Close relatives to the owls are the warblers, who don’t say anything in their posts

Loons, cuckoos and dodos appear now and then, usually after a defeat

Laying in waiting for Coach Mack’s demise are the vultures. Mounting loses inspire them.

The strutters, the know-every things, make grand entrances like peacocks (24:7)

Declining in numbers are the eagles, falcons and hawks not wanting to post here because of the warblers and peacocks

Increasing in numbers, though, are the hummingbirds the types that hover over the blog all day

The antithesis of the hummingbirds are the roadrunners for they just come in for a quick post and then there out

The crows causing havoc here, too, much as they are also the nemesis to farmers. And to the blog host.

Now and then you have posters not having their facts straight and laying an egg, like hens

Then you have posters having their facts straight and coming across like turkeys

Longish post, ones where the poster says a mouthful, come across as pelicans

In the middle of this you have your pigeons and doves that flock together and coexist

Hiding behind screen names we have swans because everyone is beautiful in their own way

What prompted me in writing this is that, like birds in the bird kingdom, posters are unique in their own way, too. And it’s this uniqueness and together with spontaneity in which posters write that makes this blog interesting. Although I’m guilty at times of attacking the messenger and not the message I agree with the guidelines that the blog host has set forth. It makes for a better blog. And it makes a lot of sense.

To which it must be noted: We used to have a lot more women on this blog.”
