Veikune to return to Ohio as talks continue

In a show of good faith, David Veikune will depart tonight for Ohio while contract discussions continue.
Veikune was one of the Cleveland Browns’ two second-round draft picks in April. The Browns have not signed any of their top three selections.
Friday is the reporting date for Cleveland’s rookies. NFL policy does not allow for an unsigned rookie to participate in training-camp functions.
Advisers had planned to keep Veikune in Hawai‘i until a contract agreement was reached. But it was decided that it would be a good-faith effort for Veikune to return to Ohio.

The word on the street is that Josh Manupuna, a Kamehameha Schools graduate who played nine games for Portland State last year, is set to transfer to UH.
Manupuna, a defensive tackle, is 6 feet 2 and 285 pounds.
He would have to redshirt this season, but would have two seasons of eligibility after that.

Speaking of transfers, defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu said he will skip training camp to heal from several nagging injuries and will officially join the Warriors Aug. 24.
Tuipulotu, who played 19 games for Arizona, must sit out this season, anyway, because of NCAA transfer rules. He is eligible to practice.
Tuipulotu is 6 feet 2 and 300 pounds.

As one of the most electrifying UH football players — think pre-Jeff Sydner — Marco Johnson was a BMOC.
Now he co-owns a campus.
To be precise, Johnson and his wife, Sandra, are co-founders of the University of Antelope Valley (Calif.).
After graduating from UH, Johnson aspired to become a firefighter/paramedic in Los Angeles.
He accomplished that. His wife then encouraged him to start teaching CPR courses  in his spare time.
One course led to another, and soon he was leading more than 20 courses on CPR and EMT. That led to the foundation of a college offering two-year degrees.
This past June 1, the U.S. Department of Education gave approval for Antelope Valley to offer four-year and master’s degrees.
The school now has 1,300 students.
It has relocated to what was once a hotel resort. The school offers a well-regarded culinary school.
“It’s been a blessing,” Johnson said. “The city is behind us 100 percent.”
He said he is currently searching for a president to run the private school. “I have a master’s in education, but we’re looking for a president with a PhD or higher,” Johnson said.
Johnson said the school is — slowly — building an athletic department. They will start with swimming and diving teams to accommodate a state-of-the art facility.
The long-term goal is to start a football program.
His dream is to become an athletic director.
He said the school has solicited suggestions for a sports nickname. There have been 550 submissions, including “Warriors.”
Johnson remains a strong supporter — and donor — of UH. He helped subsidize the recent UH football camps. His son, Devion Volta-Johnson, a former UH player, is set to graduate in December.
“I have great memories of Hawai‘i,” Johnson said.

Running back Chizzy Dimude, a JC transfer, has been working hard since arriving to town a few weeks ago. He works out in the morning and afternoon, with a regimen that includes weight-training, speed drills and yoga. He also has been fielding punts.

Applying for any Athletic Director position is tough enough.

Creating an entire university just to one day be its AD is fricken AWESOME!!!!

  25. Ralph July 22, 2009 1:27 am

i bet he can fast track the hiring of an AD and coaches, unlike UH, and not have issues of salary and union

  26. Ralph July 22, 2009 1:35 am

I hope he focuses on the academic side before jumping into athletics…it takes a lot of money to run a college, sports can be a drain without outside revenues, and we know that California colleges are financial hurting at this time so Johnson needs to look at his source of revenue (tuition) and expenditures before spending any money on sport programs.

  27. NYUH July 22, 2009 4:40 am

Mentioned this late last night. Today on ESPN’s College Football Live’s 50 States Tour – Hawaii/Idaho – Set your DVRs!

  28. Hoohiki July 22, 2009 4:42 am

I’m sure there are various circumstances that bring our boys back home and want to eventually play for UH. Transfers that usually allow them to play just 2 years. I’m sure many would agree that UH is fortunate to get these boys back and sometimes, especially Coach Mack has a place for these “transfer” players when they change their mind or finally get their grades in order. It seems we’re getting alot of transfers recently and I’m assuming they will all walk on and vye for an eventual scholarship. I’m not knocking trying the “greener” pasture first, but it would be even nicer if these local players see the “green” ( and white) in their own backyard and play and know one system for 4 or 5 years. Again, I’m not saying we shouldn’t welcome transfers; some have been succes stories i.e. Veikune, but I would rather a player develop into a system than have to play catch up.

  29. Garret July 22, 2009 4:59 am

    Hoohiki,

I doubt that Josh Manupuna turned down a scholarship from UH to go to Portland State…he wouldn’t be a good example of a player trying the “greener” pastures.

  30. Garret July 22, 2009 5:02 am

Marco Johnson expanding his college to a 4-year program during these economic conditions in California and looking to start an Athletic Department really shows he can dream big. I respect his efforts and he must be working extremely hard…I hope that things work out for Antelope Valley’s economy so that his customers can afford to attend and support his school.

  31. Garret July 22, 2009 5:04 am

BSU is playing a big-money road game against Virginia Tech. They took advantage of Syracuse backing out of a Virginia Tech game to get a nationally televised CBS game in DC to open the 2010 season. So, they get big money, national TV, and it would be great exposure for the WAC if they win.

Originally, they had planned a home and home series against former Big East rival Syracuse. But when the Orange asked out of the deal, Tech was left with holes in both schedules.

Sources tell CBS 6 sports that Boise State will fill one of those slots, opening the 2010 season against the Hokies at FedEx Field in suburban D.C. It will most likely be a made-for-TV event with the time, date and network still to be determined.

  32. djmitcho July 22, 2009 5:49 am

Morning all you Tsaikos out there!

    ST,

They still haven’t fixed the RSS feed. Maybe the tech guys just want more hits on your blog.

I watched the replay of the show and I have a question: What is with Raeceen’s outfit? She reminded me of the KCAL weather girl here in SoCal, Jackie Johnson.

Somebody needs to put a fast forward, rewind, pause, etc buttons on the replay.

Another question: Can I play the older Warrior Beat shows? I wanted to watch the Devone one, but it’s not a link.

  44. Buffoman July 22, 2009 7:47 am

The Ferd article essentially spoke to the big dollar road beating scenario that JD will probably have to consider going forward.

To balance a deficit plagued budget, go on the road twice (for no less than a million each) get your national exposure, give full effort show no quit, take your lumps, take two tylonol extra strength and smile at your better looking budget.

Oh, BTW, it may actually help you with sales of Warrior merchandise.

Not sure how many of you got to see Marco Johnson play, but he was one of the best. He was fast, elusive. But he absorbed a huge hit once, suffering a concussion. He wasn’t the same after that.

Hugs, prayers, condolences to the Shoji Ohana.

  56. Kekoa July 22, 2009 9:14 am

Good for Marco Johnson! What an accomplishment. He has proven that even in a down economy hope floats!

For those who worry about him striving to add athletics into his program, I must remind them that he built his school on academics. Note that he is starting with very small and affordable sports and aspires to add football when he us able.

  57. LizKauai [Believer] July 22, 2009 9:31 am

  59. MeiLing July 22, 2009 9:45 am

Good idea for Kaniela to recuperate before getting banged up again.

My sister brought a ‘treasure trove’ of UH football things with her. She worked in the UH athletics office when Tomey was the HC. Media guides from 1983 & 1985. Pictures of the team from 1981, 1982 & 1984. JD, Miano, Sapolu, Onosai; June Jones with funny hair.

    Pride.,

    When were you playing?

  60. Garret July 22, 2009 9:46 am

I hope that Kaniela Tuipulotu makes a full recovery, as he could be very important to the 2010 team.

Great to hear that Chizzy has such a good work ethic. UH could use another contributor at RB.

  61. chawan_cut July 22, 2009 9:47 am

    lizk,
is there a special L&L show tonight?

  62. Garret July 22, 2009 9:48 am

Bad news today–the Browns rejected the contract proposal from David Veikune’s agent. It doesn’t seem like Cleveland is interested in getting the contracts done with their 3 second round draft picks! Cleveland hasn’t even started on the contracts for their other 2nd round picks and the only reason why there was a contract proposal for Veikune is that his agent has been on the ball.

The Browns appear to have prioritized signing No. 1 pick Alex Mack over their other three unsigned draft picks.

There has been an exchange of contract proposals between the Browns and Mack, sources say, while talks with second-round picks Brian Robiskie, Mohamed Massaquoi and David Veikune have not gone that far.

A contract proposal for Veikune, the linebacker from University of Hawaii, has been rejected by the Browns, one source said.

Proposals for receivers Robiskie and Massaquoi have not been exchanged, said another source.

  76. Derek July 22, 2009 10:36 am

Good to hear about Marco Johnson and good for him. It’s a feel good story and he’s a success in life and took advantage of his education and further it to own his own business. I distinctly remember Marco scoring a touchdown against UNLV at Las Vegas. It was the first UH road game that I attended and they beat UNLV and Randall Cunngham 27 or 28-0.
Dick Tomey was the head coach and I remember Mike Stennis was the QB and Duane Coleman caught a touchdown pass.

On another note, is V.J. Fehoko considering UH? I know UH offered a scholarship, but we don’t hear too much about him mentioning UH at all. He talks about BYU, Utah, Texas Tech, etc…To me it’s pretty strange that his father is the UH Warrior mascot and yet his previous kids (Whitley and Sam) went away. Maybe UH didn’t offer the other two scholarships, but I would think that Sam must have been offered one by UH since he was highly recruited. Anyway, to each it’s own, but it just seemed a little odd. Good luck to V.J. this season. I see that he’s back at Farrington after he went to Kahuku for a little while.

Deseret News article–The MWC Commisioner let it be known that they have discussed expansion…in the past they publicly said that they would not expand and they have rejected BSU’s pleas to take them, but now that their proposal to join the BCS was rejected it sounds like they want to expand before they try again.

Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson’s annual “State of the Conference” comments centered around the league’s fight for automatic inclusion in the Bowl Championship Series.

Thompson vows the battle will continue. The crux, he explained, is to keep winning games. A performance-based system is what the conference is seeking.

The league will continue to push for change, noting that the window to do so must be complete before the next BCS contract is negotiated. In the meantime, the task is clear — keep winning games.

That, he added, makes it easier to “stick up for ourselves” and keep “fighting for our guys.”

As for expansion, Thompson acknowledged its been discussed but that no specific institutions have been pinpointed. Scheduling is a concern and the league is still uncertain if expansion would help the BCS cause.

  117. Garret July 22, 2009 1:38 pm

ESPN’s article openly speculates on BSU joining the MWC and how badly the WAC would be hurt if BSU left.

If the Mountain West were to add a 10th team, Thompson said that it might ruin some of the rivalries that have started between Mountain West teams and BCS schools in their area, or rivalries between the service academies. Thompson said that adding a ninth conference game might throw a wrench in scheduling.

“You really take away any scheduling for BCS purposes, if you will,” Thompson said. “Now, if conversely a team were to come in and really strengthen the BCS cause, that would be reason for focus. It’s something that we’ve looked at.”

I think it’s interesting — though not shocking — that the Mountain West Conference is looking at expansion. The conference is looking for a way to strengthen its BCS résumé and adding the right team would be a good move. Although Thompson was speaking in generalities, I think it’s fair to assume that Boise State would be at the top of the list should the conference expand. I mean, how many teams could really strengthen the conference’s BCS résumé?

I think the thing we forget to mention when we talk about this is, what would happen to the WAC if Boise State left? Yes, the conference might be a little more level, but the WAC would definitely lose its selling point. There is no other team in the WAC that garners the kind of attention Boise State does. Losing it would be a big blow.

  118. Garret July 22, 2009 1:39 pm

Commentary on Yahoo directly identifies BSU as the target for MWC expansion.

Even hypothetically, there’s only one plausible team in the Mountain West’s geographical footprint that could possibly “strengthen the BCS cause” in time to make a dent before the next BCS contract is up for renogotiation: Boise State. With apologies to Tulsa and Fresno State, the addition of the winningest team of the decade to a league that’s more than held its own against the big boys over the last four years is the only move the other BCS powers couldn’t afford to ignore — it would almost certainly move the Mountain West past the Big East on the field, immediately, and would keep the MWC in the Big East’s ballpark in terms of attendance.

It’s a win-win — unless, of course, you’re the WAC, which (increased parity notwithstanding) would never let its powerhouse and potential BCS meal ticket leave without a fight. It’s one thing to stand up for all the little guys, but there is no room in this game for sacrifice.

This is why there was such a big fuss over Georgia and their recruiting at a certain high school…someone *really* messed up at Georgia!

Carver High football coach Dell McGee told University of Georgia football coaches that they are not welcome on Carver’s campus if they treat all recruits the way they did Tigers quarterback Devin Burns.

The university suddenly backed out of a scholarship offer to Burns, who went to Athens, Ga., on Saturday with his family to accept.

Burns intended to meet with Georgia coach Mark Richt and commit in person with his family at his side. But when a Georgia assistant found out about the plan, Burns was notified his offer had been revoked.

McGee, a former Auburn defensive back, got proactive, stating Georgia is no longer welcome at the school.

“I say that to show them that the incident that occurred wasn’t appreciated,” McGee said. “The biggest thing is, the University of Georgia knew, they had knowledge of Devin and his parents coming there for the weekend. For them not to communicate that they had rescinded that offer before that was not very professional.”

Colleges revoke offers frequently as recruits ebb and flow, filling positions and opening up others. But Georgia’s decision to wait until Burns was on campus to commit in front of his family caused the quarterback unnecessary embarrassment, according to McGee.

“It happens all the time — colleges change their minds and that’s OK,” McGee said. “But usually they call me and tell me, and I’ve got to be the one who has to bring the bad news to the players and their families. This was just a breakdown in the communication and was very embarrassing for Devin and his family.”

The NY Times has Wisconsin as the #41 team in the country.

Wisconsin has seen its victory total drop from 12 in 2006 – the most in school history – to nine in 2007 to seven last fall. For an explanation as to why this slide has occurred, look no further than the performance of the Badger defense.

A massive position battle to watch section. Two for the price of one: the defensive line and the linebacker corps. Each unit returns only a single starter, making the Wisconsin front seven a questionable area heading into 2009.

It would appear obvious to the Warriors that what happens to BSU and the MWC would have an adverse effect upon the Warriors. The only way to combat anything the MWC may have with BSU would be for the Warriors to become the BSU of the WAC. In other words, in the words of another, “just win, baby”. The Warriors cannot go the next few years as a middle of the pack team. They simply have to not just win, but dominate the WAC, and it cannot be close. If they want the WAC to remain attractive, they have to rise to become the star as the current star is looking elsewhere and the “other” is beginning to become interested. If the move does not happen for the next couple of years, it is imperative for the Warriors or someone else to rise and simply dominate the others in the WAC.

If the so called “star” BSU leaves, I have to agree with Garret’s post in that the WAC will loose whatever luster it currently has and be a conference of “also rans’ in the eyes of the Big Boys: where the Big Dollars are.

We being out in the middle of the ocean have a lot going against us. e have to shine brighter, play harder and win like crazy (Oklahoma style, especially when on the big stage or battling the Big Boys) and become that star.

Bad news for Jake Ingram’s negotiations with New England. I can see why Ingram’s side wouldn’t want part of the bonus to be a 2010 roster bonus…if Hodel wins the long-snapper battle, New England could cut Ingram and avoid paying the roster bonus. A signing bonus is guaranteed money, a roster bonus actually gives the team an incentive to cut a player.

With rookies set to report to training camp early next week, a source indicates the Patriots have hit a snag in their negotiations with at least one of their three unsigned rookies.

It was believed earlier this week there was cause for optimism surrounding the negotiations for sixth-round pick Jake Ingram, with one source telling WEEI.com earlier they were confident a deal would be done “shortly.” But the talks between the two sides have apparently stalled over the proposed signing bonus.

A long snapper out of Hawaii taken 198th overall in the 2009 draft, a league source says Ingram — who is represented by the Morgan Advisory Group — is seeking a three- or four-year deal, a slotted contract that would give him a a signing bonus of roughly $95,500 on a four-year deal and $70,000 on a three-year contract.

However, the source indicated New England and senior football advisor Floyd Reese — who is taking the lead in contract negotiations — are attempting to take part of the signing bonus on a four-year deal and put it into a 2010 roster bonus. That doesn’t sit well with the Ingram camp.

And it appears that Grayson Galloway could make it four in a row. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Galloway, the stepson of former NFL quarterback Craig Morton, will take over the reigns after waiting in the wings for two years.

Analysis of Miami’s WRs has a nice mention of Bess.

Considering every receiver is fairly young in terms of age and experience (Camarillo’s three seasons makes him the vet), it’s not a stretch of the imagination to expect each to improve slightly, if not drastically. The optics 4 a BSU jump to the MWC r 20-20…the MWC top to bottom is the best among midmajor wannabees and their infrastructures and facilities are also good….BSU has done well in their mission statement and their vision has been solid…..the WAC is goin nowhere with Benson and most of our programs are at risk….its not a matter of what, how or where but WHEN….the assumption that BSU will melt under MWC competition and dissipate into oblivion rather than continue growth is ill-founded and inconsistent with every challenge this program has faced since becoming a D1A program. Their success is a gold-plated template worthy of recognition and example.

    brew808,

I wish that 6-year-old could play for me also…she knows all the rules, knows when to hit, stand and double, knows how much she is supposed to bet, doesn’t get greedy even if she is on a hot or cold streak, and is so lucky! When she finishes summer school I think I’ll teach her how to count cards and she will find that really fun.

    brew808,

About Ingram’s contract situation, you could be correct. It worries me that the new special teams coach personally brought in Ingram’s competition. However, if Jake can win that job he could have a long career there, and if not he’ll get on another team.

    thinking aloud…

while the spotlight seems to have found oline coach gordy shaw for obvious reasons.

he secondary spotlight is focused upon offensive coordinator ron lee. he certainly has a tough act to follow in june jones, but, i think that the pieces are falling in place and he will prove his worth this year.

in his defense, the cupboard was left bare last year, the result of a couple of weak recruiting years that was experienced at manoa.

  159. Garret July 22, 2009 7:50 pm

    ST,

Regarding your #134, BSU and the MWC are looking at being part of a BCS conference. If they get that status, then they don’t have to worry about running the table to get big money. Plus, recruiting would be a lot easier if they were a BCS conference and the WAC was not.

There are already more FBS teams in BCS Conferences than not in BCS Conferences. If the BCS added another conference they could appease their critics (especially a certain Utah Senator and an Attorney General in Utah), and there isn’t much that the other conferences could say.

Cute story about how a former Texas Tech walk-on fell in love.

Kelly Hildebrandt, female, age 20, went searching last February for people who shared her name on Facebook.

She found Kelly Hildebrandt, male, of Lubbock, Texas, with a sexy shirtless photo as an added bonus.

The pair of Kellys corresponded online for several weeks before the male Kelly made the bold move to fly to Florida to meet his namesake in person.

In October, eight months after they met online, the two got engaged.

It’s not always easy for the couple, they told the “Today” show; having the same name does create some confusion in the mail box, for starters.

Then there was the time male Kelly tried to book a cruise for the two of them through his company.

They nearly ended up with just one ticket after the people handling the reservations assumed it was a typo when there were two bookings under the exact same name.

Replying to “al”–Jamal Farmer was a very talented & fluid runner. Still, he had a penchant for dancing around rather than hitting the hole in a timely fashion-this made him less efffective than Travis Sims who got through the hole fast, although he was more of a straight-ahead runner. Hopefully Green & others will have Sims’ speed & timing with Farmer’s shiftiness.

i always thought that jamal farmer and travis sims were similar in many ways because of their ability to make quick decisions/moves to make the initial pursuit miss and then would be able to burst through and by the lb’s. their forte’s were to gain positive yardage on every carry and to have a nose for the goal line. and they possessed the power to handle one on one situations.

in particular, farmer who set the record of 19 rushing td’s.

i see similarities in alex green.

BSU player charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

Boise State football player Michael Atkinson was arrested early Wednesday on a charge of driving under the influence, according to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.

Atkinson, a 20-year-old freshman defensive tackle from Windsor, Ontario, also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Both charges are misdemeanors.

The 6-foot, 320-pound Atkinson emerged as a promising player during fall camp last August, and again during camp this past spring. He was last season’s Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year.

“We’re expecting big things,’’ coach Chris Petersen said in an Idaho Statesman article in April. “If he can continue to work like he has been working, he’s going to be something interesting to watch.’’

Feature article on Greg Alexander, talking about how the way he responded to the Florida game earned him the team’s respect.

“The game was moving a lot faster, I didn’t have a complete grasp of the offense and we were playing against one of the best teams in the nation,” Alexander said. “It wasn’t a great combination.”

SRJC coach Keith Simons spoke to Hawaii quarterback coach Nick Rolovich, a Novato native, during the season and Rolovich raved about Alexander’s response to his rugged debut.

“Nick was telling me how Greg would show up to practice every day and just work his butt off,” Simons said. “By doing that he earned the respect of the team.”

Said Alexander, “It’s just one of those things. Crying and whining about stuff isn’t going to help you. I just kept working to get better.”

  178. Garret July 23, 2009 5:11 am

It is great to read how Alexander worked hard on the Academic side also at UH.

After managing a 2.5 GPA at Piner, Alexander was a member of the academic all-WAC team after posting a 3.6 GPA. A history major, he plans to get into coaching or go to law school when his playing career is over.

“You do your work and your grades go up,” Alexander said. “I started thinking about what I wanted to do in the future and started taking things more seriously.”

Happy Birthday to the Warrior Princess. You wear your title well. As we head into this season, I’m looking forward to viewing your best camera work. Few fans get to see the hard work you put in. I see you roaming the sidelines at every practice and of course each game.

Please put together a cameo piece on each of the Warriors who make the starting roster on offense/defense. It would be interesting for us to take a closer look at the play makers of this year’s team.

Mahalo Princess!…and enjoy your ‘Born in Hawaii’ day!
