Former Warrior named to Wade’s staff
Dan Fisher is rejoining the Warrior volleyball team as an associate head coach.
He is coach Charlie Wade’s second hire. Earlier, Wade retained Mason Kuo as an assistant coach.
Fisher was an outside hitter at UH in 1995 and 1996. He then transferred to Pacific, believing he could earn more playing time.
“I was sad when he left,” UH coach Mike Wilton said. “We liked him a lot.”
Fisher switched to setter at Pacific, where he set several records.
After that, he coached at Pacific. The past two years, he was a top assistant for the San Francisco women’s team.

A high 4.3? A low 4.4? He did not know.
Right wideout Jovonte Taylor had only been timed in the 40 once, and that was a few years ago, under less-than-ideal conditions.
But as part of a conditioning tutorial, Anthony Pollard (father of UH wideout Royce Pollard) wanted to time players in the 15, 20 and 40. For the 15s and 20s, the players — Taylor, Pollard, Joe Avery, Chris Black and Dustin Blount — started in a receiver stance, as if they were ready for the snap.
For the 40, they were in the sprinter’s starting-line stance.
The sprints were run on the Cooke/Ching field’s synthetic track. Because they had completed an hour of unsupervised workouts, they were wearing turf shoes, not sprinter’s cleats. They did not have a practice run.
Under those conditions, against slight tradewinds, Taylor ran the 40 in 4.31 seconds.
Thing is, the distance was not in yards but in meters.
That equates to a distance of 43.7445 yards. “He’s fast,” Anthony Pollard said.

Congrats to quarterback Corey Nielsen, who graduated last night.

Happy birthday to sjMacro.

Hey, Liz.

Pho Kauai in the Rice Shopping Center (next to the Bowling Alley).
Woo Hoo!

Nice to see family members enjoying/encouraging the unsupervised workouts!
With all the workout already under their belts – perhaps these times reflect more of a gametime situation. JUST WATCH OUT FOR THE HAMMIES!!!
Streeeeetch it out!
I’ll see if I can use The Tizer’s private jet.
Anthony Pollard actually has them going through an intensive stretching routine. I’ll post pictures of that soon.

I wonder if Scott Wong or Mark Presho are in the running.
i can run the 40 in 3 flat.

ST,
Since we are on the topic of “speed”. Let the techies know… WordPress 2.8 is now available for immediate download (You are currently running 2.7). Over 790 bugs were fixed. AND very importanly, improved speed!
a Happy Birfday shout to SJmacro!
Congrats to Corey – Mr. Valedictorian of his high school class!
Congrats to Coach Dana and Welcom to Shawna-lei!
a MIGHTY shout to Tony Pollard, who is spending his own time to assist the unsuprevised workouts for the Wariors, whom I met at the NOLA airport on our way home from the Sugar Bowl. He yells real loud, “hey, Hawaii” and I turn around and give him the “shaka” and motion to wait, I’ll be back. Then, we started to talk like long lost friends, but it was the first time we met each other. People around us were kinda giggling at our motions, words, etc. Then, met him again at the awards banquet in Dec 2008.
Happy Birthday sj
Speed kills.
Good morning!
I can run a 4.2+
al & Loa:
Unsure if Tony Pollard is doing coaching, but he did play QB in college.
madeinhawaii, that’s the distance from my seat to my beer bottle.
homey ℞:
I can run a 4.2+
If you are on your way to lunch…………………
Nice! Speed kills ah?
Congrats Corey! Great job and nice gathering of lei! Hawaiian style big time!
you’d think Stretch would have his own private jet with the amount of flying he does….
A-House – that’s a nice story, reminds me of one of my friends who always calls out to me “eh hawaiian how u”
homey ℞ – howzit
Wow, even when you factor in that it was hand-timed, that’s still pretty fast. I’m really looking forward to seeing him in the rotation.
Congrats to Corey! Wow, sure does look like he went grad from a school here in Hawai‘i, with all the lei he’s wearing.
And happy birthday to sj-macro!
Happy Birthday sj_macro!
Hand-time, real-time, any time, just in time….no matter. Da buggah is fasssss!
Congratulations Mr. Nielsen….better lei’d den nevah! 😉
So, besides Jovante, what were the other times for the other guys? There is no question, Taylor is the fastest Warrior. I hope he stays healthy. Is he slated for kickoff and punt return duties? If he’s shifty too
he might be a pretty dangerous weapon. He hasn’t played a down yet, much less put on the uniform, but Corey is already my favorite player.
The perfect student/athlete.
morning Tsaiko Nation, yep barely morning.
happy birthday sjmacro!
this kind of speed reminds me of “color me gone”!
happy birthday Jerry!
congratulations to Corey Nielson….hele on back to Hawaii..

mih,
i tink dere hands are still in my pocket…or is dat wan gun?
no, that’s Koa Mahu’s hand!
Hopefully, Jovonte will be like Bess and not drop anything catchable.
Ralph.. if it’s IN Haka’s pocket, it’s NOT Koa Mahu’s hand… ;->
Mind you.. that’s “IF”.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SJMACRO!!!
Some people think that now Coach Takahara-Dias needs to “build a team around Kuehu”. Based on what I’ve seen last season, Breanna Arbuckle and Jennifer Hamilton both bring the athleticism and “fluid-ness” to the game and Megan Tinin can shoot from the 3pt arch if necessary (but look like gotta work on getting da lead out of her shoes sometimes) and not to mention what Keisha Kanekoa brings to the table.
Rebecca Dew did well last season and we still have yet to see what Sarah Ilic can do when she is 100%.
To me the pieces are there and now we’ll see what Coach Takahara-Dias can mold them into and what kind of staff she will bring in.
Of course I am not saying, forget the recruiting now, Coach T-D will still have to do this, but with Kuehu still having four years to play and Arbuckle and Hamilton having three and Kanekoa having two, things are looking like they possess the potential to get better.
I’m gonna go ahead and predict the best they will do for their first year under Coach Takahara-Dias will tie for 3rd in the WAC this upcoming season.
For two seasons now, I always believed we had the players in the Wahine basketball program to produce more wins than what the records showed and that the coaching was not there or at the very least, the players were not buying into what ever Bolla was selling.
Hey, nice post, very well written. You should blog more about this.
Corey Nielsen- Congrats!
Whoosh!
Na Wahine has some height to work with, two of the freshmen are listed at 6’3 post players, one from Canada and the other from New Zealand…hopefully the Kiwi brings the heart and intensity of Tania Brunton to the house…
if she had Tania Brunton’s looks Pauoa Boy will bring his brigade of marines back to the Stanley to watch her play…
Ralph,
I think you are referring to Rebecca Dew 6’3″ center. She’d be a sophomore this upcoming season.
She’s solid on her feet and while she didn’t get Tanya Smith-like rebound numbers, she was productive inside the paint. Sarah Ilic at 6’2″ looks like another good athlete but she was hurt earlier in the season and it was bad enough for her to sit out the rest of the 08 season.
Bolla felt the need to platoon a lot of the girls last season and you could only get a small glimpse of what the younger classmen could do, but from what I rememeber, Dew and Hamilton seem to be the best of the freshmen in 2008 and should only be better this upcoming season.
e bolla stated that Dew can run the floor with the best, just got to let her loose and see what she got, go kiwi…
Yup, from what I saw last season she could. She too was hampered with an injury last season as she sported one of those plastic masks. The girl was tough and played with no regard for her injury.
And on a related note, this just in, with the 3rd pick in the 2010 draft, Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders select Jovonte Taylor, University of Hawaii.
Noooooooooo!!!
Good afternoon Tsaikos…hope all is well….
Speed kills…that’s awesome….
Happy Birthday SJMACRO…and many more
Happy birthday SJMacro!!!
Corey Nielsen: High School is behind you but the best is yet to come! Congrats.
The standard conversion of hand times to electronic times is to add .24 seconds to a hand time. So that is a 4.55, say 4.50 since it was meters. So not as impressive but still in a solid time (didn’t Jason Rivers run about that fast?).
June Jones gets the fb office complex modernized in his second year at the Hilltop, all paid by a booster and a graduate of SMU Business College. He was here about 8 years, nadda…where were our boosters, the movers and the shakers who seem to interfere with UH autonomy on a yearly basis. Also the politicos who wanted a local added to the UH presidency search, fools stepping out of the peanut gallery, they need to find ways to fund the UH system without strings attached…Just do It.
Jason Rivers at the combine ran about a 4.7….all of our wr ran a dismal 40…some were hampered with hammies…..maybe Garret can shed light on Bess’s 40 time at Miami, that’s a lot more accurate than UH media hype on players 40 time and height. then we can compare Taylor’s time with Bess’s.
Congrats also to Corey Nielsen….now, on to bigger and better things…but always remember that an education is why you are at a University….
Ralph, are you dissing ST and his buddies? You do know Ralph that some of us have ST’s back don’t you? Nobody disses ST without getting by me first.(hahaha)
al:
Mike Akiu (sp) ran the 40 in 4.23 seconds and drafted by Houston – unfortunately, all that speed did not get him a lot of playing time – stayed only 2 or 3 years and got cut – too bad they would not use his speed and good hands
Happy Birthday to sjmacro! Love the pics you share!
and I swear, that homey always a slave boss!
Happy birthday to sjmacro.
Happy Birthday sjMacro!
Ralph,
Nice knowing you. 😉
Happy Bday to SJ Macro….29 and holding 🙂
Travis Laboy and ohana was on my return flt from Phoenix yesterday. His right leg, below the knee is in a cast, and he uses a stroller to elevate it in a bent knee position. looked painful, even if he was in first class, haha
looked lean, a little undersized, but he has probably not been working out too much because of the injury. 🙁
I can beat Jovonte Taylor’s 40 time.
(Just throw a live centipede towards me.)
In today’s edition of USA Today – sports section:
“….Tall Hawaiian DE stands out at camp, attracts offers….”
Article is about Kona Schwenke; other players are mentioned.

Anything noteworthy at today’s session?
Welcome back Bulla! Hope you and the Bombers will be attending this Saturday.

ai-ee-soos,
I like that kid’s name…can imagine Kazz doing his Poly accent and turning it into something that sounds kinda threatening! 😈
ai-eee-soos,
Sorry, nevah mean to short you one “e”
ralph….the glaring difference is that smu, a private university with a strong alumni presence within the dallas area coupled with the southern methodist church have folks who are willing to donate large sums of cash.
they also don’t have the red tape to muddle through as with our public state university.
hey, it starts with donations. why don’t you start a campaign to donate funds for that expressed purpose? at least it will be done in due time.

ai-eee-soos,
Tru dat! 😆
ST,
So I guess Coach Fisher complete’s Wade’s new staff?
Kazz:
Yep.
They might pick up a grad assistant.
sjMacro –
Special birthday wishes to you, sjMacro, one of the most kind, generous, giving and talented Tsaikos…with a million dollar smile that always lifts my spirits.
Corey Nielsen –
Congratulations and best wishes on your graduation and splendid and outstanding achievements! I have a feeling that the best is yet to come for you.
Mei Ling –
Ain’t it a great feeling to nail slugs, flies and other pest-es that make our lives miserable. Last night, after we had gone to bed, Midori had a battle royal going on in the hallway with a huge roach. Swat!…swat!…swat! using a rolled up magazine. Woke me up as I raced to assist her. Da buggah wasn’t even staggered. I grabbed it with tp, tossed it in the toilet and poured pine sol over it. I’m not a vindictive person, but I felt good seeing it writhing in agony as it was flushed away. BTW, A-House snored through the whole episode.
ST –
I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday’s blog chat with Augie T. Watching it a second time today, I noticed for the first time the bobble-head dolls to each side of the microphones. Question…who are the athletes and where can I get one?
I can beat Jovonte Taylor’s 40 time.
(Just throw a live centipede towards me.)
haaa……..Kazz………….whats that AT&T commercial with wireless card? faster than Taylor’s punches and Roddick’s serve?
Any idea as to what Tino Reyes’ next move is?
G-Nalo,
Centipedes… Brah, I no mess around wit dat kine ****!
hundred.. again (2 days in a row!)
G-Nalo,
Centipedes… Brah, I no mess around wit dat kine ****!
trust me……when it comes to centipedes i’m even faster than you. 🙂
Both of you are wussies!
just wondering…………..why did they measure off meters? how did they measure off meters?
good to see this kind of speed at WR, now…..how do you get him the ball without breaking stride?
When it’s late at night at Cabana A, and centipedes creep in the darkness … let’s just say Annett Wichmann and Amber Kaufman got nothing on me. In particular, my specialties are the 100 m hurdles and high jump. 😀
Both of you are wussies!
but fast…………..
Make that 3 wussies…
I got one…
When centipedes are out and about… Stretch ain’t got nothing on me in terms of vocal volume. I think mine is higher in pitch though.
Kinda like a “yelp” rather than a manly scream.
That’s it, I’m bringing centipedes to the next t-gate. *For amusement only*
since they no longer run 100 yard or 220 yard dashes. i assume that the track is marked by the meters to keep up with the current times.
not bad answer for a non-engineer, eh?
Happy birthday, sj!
Nothing wrong with centipedes. Except they have too many legs, are segmented, are poisonous, and just plain creepy.
But, other than those things, centipedes do not bother me at all.
when will dana announce her staff?
i’d like to see at least one former rainbow wahine on staff.
oldie . . .
Thank you for the disc — arrived today!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Hi Homes-
Welcome back from da northssai. Guess where I’m going tonight? Pho la la la laaaa… Maybe you can stow away on the ‘tizer jet when ST flies over.
fisher seems to be a great fit.
so now charlie has two former warriors who also were setters.
it will take me some time to get used to seeing charlie on the men’s bench. i wonder who will be his grad asst? another setter? carney?
i’ll bet that dpk has the shrillest scream of them all.
the twins would be a close second.
Be sure to tell me how that T-Gate goes yeah. 😉
since they no longer run 100 yard or 220 yard dashes. i assume that the track is marked by the meters to keep up with the current times.
not bad answer for a non-engineer, eh?
yeah, very good Al.
This is off topic but just wanted to give a quick update on my mom…they are moving her to an even less intensive room today…and they now have her walking around…hope to have her out of the hospital by Saturday….thanks again to all the Tsaikos and Pink siders for their love, support, thoughts, prayers, and offers of help….you guys (ummm…and gals) are the greatest….
Wafan,
Centipedes are satan-incarnate.
Raid only irritates them.
When you chop off their head, then use some tweezers to pull out what appears to be their spine, the body still moves.
No other insect in Hawaii draws more fear and loathing than this beast of an insect.
(J)James,
That is good news my friend.
Continued well-wishes and prayers for your mom.
MBB – article posted at 2:54 p.m.
Zane Johnson & Aleksander Milovic were signed by Nash.
I think both have to sit out next year.
I guess Nash is banking on rolling over after next year.
great news j/j!
kazz….what about scorpions?
ay sus….doesn’t nash have a two year rollover? i think trap has the one year rollover (aka trapdoor contract).
Kaxx . . .
You got close enough to cut off the head?
Good to see volunteers helping the Warriors.
Great news JJ, you can always count on us pink siders.
okay so nash had one year left on his initial 3yr deal which covers the 2009-10 season and his one yr extension gives him 2010-11 with an option for another year by mutual consent.
(J)J . . .
Bravissimo for your mom!!! She will be weilding that slippah soon enough.
whereas, trap has just one year.
crap…. i just spat my coffee all over the pc and monitor thanks to pride.’s comment.
i am picturing pride. with a big pink hibiscus in his left ear and throwing a smooch through his pc camera lens albeit with his hot pink lipstick.
yikes.
belated congratulations to matt sisto for being named 3rd team freshman all american!
al – yup, I think you got both Trap’s and Nash’s contracts figured out.
Thanks.
Jamesie-
That is very good news about your mom.
Thanks for the updates!
Congrats to Dan Fisher.
If Coach Wade is gonna get a grad assistant I hope it’s Brian Beckwith.
(J)J,
Great news! Hoping for continued recovery…
al,
Uhhhh….not sure about wanting to hear more of your Pride. fantasies. 🙄
Al,
Honestly I’ve never seen a scorpion in person, but to use an example, I can look at a picture of a scorpion or watch them on a nature show without feeling all “itchy” and tense, whereas just a glimpse of a centipede is enough to make me all ready to run.
Taking a closer look at Corey Nielsen’s photo, and it seems like he had a lot of well-wishers who went thru more than a little trouble to bring some fresh lei for his graduation. Lucky buggah!
I saw a scorpion as a kid. Never cared for those either. Or bees, wasps, all those kinds of things. I get that itch all over with any kind of poisonous or crawly creature.
As D1 pointed out Cory Nielsen’s grad photo above, I wonder…
Are HS graduations in the mainland, or at least in Cali, now adopting the “Hawaii-way” of sending off graduates with the piling on of leis?
I know Nielsen get PLENNY local ohana that went to his graduation, but I must be out of the loop… I wonder how many kids with non-local ties are decked out in leis at their graduations?
I know for sure, NO other university on the mainland sends off their senior student athletes like we do.
As a fan, it feels like you’re sending off a friend or a distant family member when watching UH’s senior night festivities and it can be a bittersweet moment for all.
It truly is a great thing and I’m proud to say no other university sends off it’s senior student athletes like we do
Charlie is following Shoji’s formula for coaches-all are setters…
early evening tsaiko’s, how you all doing?
just read bio on coach wade second pick. extending my welcome and aloha to assistant coach dfisher.
looking for information on tickets or for that matter anything regarding UH vs WSU game. according to Derek Inouchi Media Relations Director something was supposed to be out today. and as the mckinley tigers say ‘eager eyes are watching hearts are beating
beating fast
sorry al, ahouses and all dem black and gold alumni but pressed the enter button to quickly but you can get my jest.
I know my friends who graduated from Mainland colleges got decked in lei from their families. Looks like it’s just the Hawai‘i folks — I saw a bunch of comments on Facebook about how friends were jealous cause they never get a similar greeting from their families and friends. 😀
Jason, were your friends local boys/girls?
Jason,
I see what you mean about the “lei-envy”. How many times have we seen opposing coaches make their team stay on the court or on the field to witness the UH senior night ceremony. If you focus in on the other team, they have one look on their face but it represents two thoughts: “interest” or “jealousy”. 😆
They must have ran on the track which is measured in meters rather than on the field which is measured in yards. There’s a big difference between running on the track which is harder and much faster than the new Field Turf which is very slow.
vballfan1:
I don’t think Beckwith has his degree yet.
All local folks, grad with me from Moanalua then went off to Mainland schools.
Nash is rolling the dice for immediate improvement- three division one transfers, two got to sit out a year, and two Juco additions…two guards, 2 swing players- both could or should play the 2 slot, and a post who needs lots of work on the offensive side…
Kazz, Jason –
Piles of leis is mostly Aloha-style!
Handful of leis is a growing trend in CA. 😀
Sending my belated, but heart-felt best wishes for a speedy, and complete recovery to (J)J‘s mom, and the nearly-retired guy’s wife! 😀
A Texas A&M-Kingsville study showed that the difference between a hand-timed and electronc-timed 40-yard dash was 0.023 — not enough to disregard the hand-timed result.
In Taylor’s case, a corrected time would be 4.33 over 43 yards.
~~~•~~~~•~~~ 😀 ★ ★ ★ Happy..Birthday..sjmacro!!! ★ ★ ★ 😆 ~~~•~~~~•~~~
Brought leis to Pittsburgh for our son’s graduation from CMU. His classmates really appreciated the flowers from Hawaii.
At Pro Day, hand-held times are used.
Hand-held and electronic times are both used at the NFL combine.
Hand-held times are used at the Senior Bowl.
ST – Didn’t you report that the coaches didn’t want the players running 40’s during Spring practice partly due to concerns about hammies and injuries, but also because Cooke/Ching Field was a slow surface (too spongy)? 🙄 😀
😳 Sorry for all the bold characters – out of practice…. 😳
Brew,
Not “mostly” local style…. it’s “ONLY” local style. 😎
Speaking of… who da hell gave the mainland permission to use “da shaka”????!?!!!?!?!?!?!?!? 😆
Good evening, gang!
Congrats to Corey Nielsen…awesome stack of leis!
SJ Macro … Happy Happy Birthday to you!!
JJ, so glad that your mom is doing better and better. : )
Cracking up at Al’s #133. All are always welcome on the pink side.
Kazz –
I had to qualify that statement cause get plenty of transplants and lost-“808″s around….. I think I’m one of them. 😆
Hi Cindy!!! Hope the DH is recovering. Good thing he has his own private nurse! 😀
BTW – I believe al, and many others have posted (some regularly) on the infamous “pink side”! 🙄 Some of those discussion topics are W A Y more frightening 😯 than any centipedes or scorpions, wild pit-bulls, open street/gang wars, or many other scenarios! 😯 🙄 😯
howzit βρεω808 still a few weeks left before retirement
COACH DANA TAKAHARA-DIAS ON LEAHEY AND LEAHEY TONIGHT!!! 😎
koakane™ – …couple weeks? I thought you were (suppose to be) cleaning out the office…. 🙄 😀
Up here the giving of lei at graduation is starting to spread to the non-808’s. It is pretty cool to see! The non-808’s have one or two while the transplants are truly decked out.
Some lei are scary and other beautiful! Still, it is the thought that counts the most!
Dan Fisher from USF, good job, but hate to see my alma mater lose a good coach. Good for UH though.
Okay – gotta check back into the asylum…. We’re finally getting some stuff done, and got some surprising, interesting results last night/this morning. It’s funny seeing the engineers so frustrated and p-o’d because these aren’t the results they had predicted and fully expected. The scientists are puzzled, but engaged. 😀 Of course, instead of getting time in the facility to debug and fix the systems, we had “quiet” time for filming and interviews all afternoon for “60-Minutes”. 🙄
Okay, maybe I need to drink more “kool-aid”, or stronger stuff, but this PR stuff is seriously cutting into our machine time! 😈 We’re falling way behind on our schedule and milestones. We have to be second only to Disneyland with VIP’s and other visitors touring around! There has been so much video and interviews, that it must be shown 24/7 on the tube! Sheeesssshhhh! Enough already! 👿
😳 Sorry for the brew-rant. Laters…. 😐
PS. …hope I don’t get in trouble for posting this…. don’t know who/how people read this stuff…. but they do. 🙄
Brew,
WHAT? 😆
off-topic
San Jose State opens at Alabama Sept 4, 2010. USA Today
Brew you going be on TV?
Congrats to Bruddah Corey, look like he went grad someplace over here in the islands… Anyway, hope to see him slinging some pigskin in the future…
Happy B-Day sjmacro
J/J great news on your mom! continued prayers.
Hi PB..Belated congrats and hope all is well..take care.
ST,
So what is Tino’s next move?
#65 Ralph, we not Army, no more brigades lol… If Tania Brunton was still playing I would have court side seats every game. She not the only one though, UH has had planny eye-candy throughout the years. Jocelyn Robbins, Victoria Prince, shoot no get me started… Now we get Shawna Kuehu as the centerpiece of Wahine Basketball, garrans going get choke more people showing up to games. If she can convince her sistah for come home, das one double eye-candy special…
I had heard from Cindy Luis’ blog that Beckwith, Jake Shkud and Carney were interested in the grad assistant position.
If Beckwith can’t be the grad Assistant I hope Shkud gets it, cause I love his personality.
If not him maybe someone that can help coach the middles, Delano Thomas perhaps? Or Dejan.
JaM,
Howzit, mahalos…besides the sandstorms/thunderstorms everything is pono.
Jovonte Taylor and Dustin Blount could be a pretty mean tandem in the slot. Having these two speedsters zipping past linebackers and into the secondary will cause major headaches. Plus we get “Pretty Boy Pilares” in there too, defensive coordinators going definitely she-she pants on game day. But isn’t one of them staying on the outside if I not mistaken???
taylor is a wideout.
does hawaii have a Man vs Food challenge sort of eatery?
I know there’s the Curry House challenge. Any others?
al,
Taylor at wideout…hmmm…seems like he’d be better suited at slot with his size and speed…regardless, nobody going catch em…
I wonder who has faster game speed, Taylor or Lane….Lane has had his moments but more often than not he can not gain separation or make a move to get into a seam for the qb to pass
Ralph,
Jovonte showed a glimpse in that game against Florida before he got hurt. Lane has speed but doesn’t get out the blocks quickly and gets jammed alot with the more physical corners in the WAC, I’ve noticed watching previous games.
RE: Game speed? Lane or J. Taylor?
Malcolm Lane is an EXCELLENT kick returner.
Ralph:
Lane led the Warriors in YAC last season.
el guapo:
Tino is one of many candidates for a head coaching job in the Western part of the country.
vbfan:
Delano Thomas also did not get a degree.
Dejan MIladinovic is working in finance. He wouldn’t come back for a non-salaried job.
Lane should lead in YAC since he’s normally sent deep on post and seam routes…
as a wide out he has someone fronting him and closer than during the KO which gives him time to pick up speed…some people can move in space quite naturally, smooth, others have to think about where they going and tend to slow down thinking all the time
Ralph,
No go talking about Koakane again, eh?
heheheh
(J)J,
Great to hear about your Mom’s improvement! I hope that she continues to make steady improvement and that your family is holding up well.
Oops, forgot to change the address.
SJSU broke their contract to play Stanford next year in order to play at Alabama for $1 million.
Pauoa Boy,
Howzit!
I think the point Stephen is making is that Lane got all the YAC because he indeed must have had some separation. Whether he catches the ball 2 yds from the LOS or 20, what happens after he catches it determines YAC.
Looks like Nevada will gt a DT transfer from Oregon.
“will gt” should be “has gotten”
It would be awesome if a Warrior player could hit it big and donate back to UH like this Fresno State LB has.
Welcome home Garret and family.
wafan,
Also note the news about Jersey Boys.
If the Tsai-kos can eat, maybe they should consider the following …
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zytQlwxRK-o
Lane in 2009 had a total of 35 receptions, only 2.5 receptions average per game, whoopee, and I wish powderpuff will be so kind as to post how many snaps he played in those 14 games. He average a whooping 43.8 yards per game with a long of 82 yards. no wonder we were 7-7, our receivers and qb weren’t connecting too often..I’m glad for him that he led the team in YAC which I think is very important but catching only 2.5 passes per game in 4 quarters of play does not help a team a whole lot.
BSU is really trying to address their Athletic Budget crunch.
I didn’t realize BSU didn’t put their team in a hotel the night before a home football game.
BSU is going to schedule road games for money, without a return trip…they are looking to schedule the type of game (possibly against SEC teams) that JD mentioned that he didn’t want UH to do anymore after the Florida game.
HiFlyer,
Thank you for the welcome back. I’m extremely sleepy right now, but will blog a little more before crashing.
It is crazy that Texas makes so much more money than the rest of the Big 12.
Piper’s Son,
Another level of Big Mac there! Definitely Tsaiko-sized, but a little too far away for most….
But getting back to Vegas, you can get an all-day passes for the buffet at the Palace Station – pay once, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They are following a growing trend in Vegas that started a few months ago.
Here’s the complete list: Palace Station ($19.99); MGM Grand ($29.99); Stratosphere ($19.99 — must be in players club), and Excalibur ($25)
Wonder if the idea will still be around in September?
Welcome home Garret Ohana!
d1島,
Still though most of his catches some off deep routes where he’s already got a full head of steam. He does have speed and can seperate on most corners and safeties but to me he needs to build up to get going. Sort of like LWJ which I think is one of the reasons he hasn’t been able to get loose yet. When I replayed some of last seasons games I noticed that Lane was able to gain seperation when going deep, but on the short/intermediate stuff, corners that got physical with him would knock him around and not allow him to get going…IMO
Garret,
With numbers like that, it’s no wonder Mack Brown was so worried about the downside of playing in Hawaii a few years back.
Pauoa Boy,
Hopefully, he will improve in all phases of his game.
Which like Ralph mentioned above attributed to Lane having very low catch totals as a starter. I hope he has a good season this year, but I could see Rodney Bradley emerging as the deep route guy…
Garret, welcome home! See you on Saturday.
Brew, mahalo for your thoughts. : ) He is improving slowly.
D1 I wonder if the tsaikos can go to the Palace Station in the morning and not leave until they finish dinner….if you guys have a free day before the UNLV game, great time to sit and chat a day away with friends and have lots of food
d1shima,
If I remember correctly, there was either no penalty or a small penalty like a few hundred thousand for breaking their commitment to play at Aloha Stadium. Considering they make about $5 million per home game, you can understand why their AD preferred to play a home game rather than travel to Aloha Stadium!
Ralph,
It’s well within the realm of possibility!
Cindy C,
I look forward to meeting you! My wife and kids probably cannot make it–the kids go to bed at 7:30pm, which would mean that I’d have to leave really early with them if I brought them.
Happy Birthday sjmacro! Thank you for your wonderful photo/video contributions!
Free play link time. Please ignore my next 5 posts if you do not want to read the off-topic stuff.
MIT engineers have found a way to slow the degradation of concrete. This could be really significant–for example, a nuclear waste containment vessel using today’s concrete is built to last 100 years, but using this new UHD concrete it could last up to 16,000 years!
15-year-old Iowa girl won a text-messaging contest (getting $50k and a new phone) just 8 months after she got her first cell phone…she sent 14,000 texts every month before this contest, now she’ll probably text even more. 250,000 tried out for the contest and only people 22-years-old or younger made the finals.
Free play links pau. Good night!
Sounds like a good idea.
d1島,
I hope Lane improves as well as the rest of the boys. If Lane had the physicality of someone like Jason Rivers it would definitely help him move on in the future. We’ll see, the anticipation is starting to build up for the start of the season.
Wow Tsaikos, just checking in. Thanks for all the birthday wishes. I was doing my “sj” thing at the zoo today. Koakane, I didn’t see the hippo and the ewe but had plenty birdie. All the monkeys and animals in the zoo gave their best regards to me and you. Take a look at some of the potential recruits on the following link: copy and paste into your browser
Good evening Tsai-kos!
Welcome home Garret and family!
OK, back to the trip report…
Seattle – we had 2 days pre-cruise in Seattle. I highly recommend the City Pass ($54) with admission to the EMP/Sci-fi Museum, Aquarium, Space Needle (2 visits w/in 2 days), Science Center, Zoo and a 1 hour harbor tour. Seattle reminds me of SF – the weather, the hills 🙄 We stayed downtown at the Sheraton. It was a nice hotel, except no one told us how much the parking fee would be ($38/night)! We probably shouldn’t have gotten a car, didn’t really need it. On wafan’s recommendation, we ate at Ivar’s near the ferry terminal. The seafood chowder was to die for and the fish and chips were great. A bit pricey and a bit of a wait, though.
Juneau – we had about 8 hours in Juneau, our first port of call. We took a shore excursion to Mendenhall glacier, a salmon hatchery and a city tour. We only had about an hour and 15 mins at the glacier, but wish we had way more time there. It was beautiful. The hatchery was not as interesting as it could be since it was a little too early in the season. The city tour was just a drive-by on the way to the glacier. Guide mentioned that the State Office Building is affectionately known as the “SOB” 😀 We then went shopping using our coupons. What a racket, but got some good buys. I got a very warm jacket for $20.
Skagway – our longest stay, about 13 hours. On the recommendation of SteveM and sj, Mom got her way and we took the White Pass Railway. A 3 hour, 40 mile ride. Scenery was spectacular. There was still snow on the ground, but not much flora, again, too early in the season. It was pretty pricey though – $120 per person thru NCL. Skagway is an interesting little town, still looking like it did during the Gold Rush. Only about 850 year-round residents.
Hiya sj! ~ Once again you have posted some outstanding photos!
One question, are you and myki coming to the 4th of July dinner for Ronnie and family? I need a final head count by this weekend to lock in the reservations I have on SteveM’s site already.
Just a reminder for all who haven’t locked in their RSVP yet. The list is on SteveM’s site.
When I asked Malcolm Lane who he thought was the fastest receiver he mentioned Rodney Bradley. But I think UH has a corp of very fast receivers not to mention some of whom are very quick. In the end it is what you do on the field on game day that counts.
At the spring thing I thought that the receivers were putting on the brakes and had to wait for the long ball. The qbs need to get the ball out quicker and let the receivers accelerate to it.
Ralph:
UH’s overall completion totals were down last season. You can’t pinpoint one receiver.
why are we picking on malcom lane?
i like his big play potential.
in the scheme of the run n shoot, slots get more balls thrown to them. and last year was an even bigger challenge since the offense was not in sync. what with the new oline, qb, and receivers and all.
and he reads this blog too as well as his folks.
i’d rather see the coaches being picked on than someone’s son.
Lane’s ratio of catches per deep pass (at least 20 yards in the air from the line of scrimmage) was excellent last year.
on another note….looking forward to greg alexander’s chat next week.
i, for one, am anticipating some big things for our offense this year.
Al:
Good point.
In UH’s offense, a completion isn’t just about a receiver getting open, just like a bike race isn’t about a guy out-pedaling everybody else. It’s a team sport. For the wideouts to get open, the slotbacks have to draw a safety away by making hard cuts to the flats. If a slotback isn’t running hard, then a linebacker can slide over and the safety, in a cover 2, can double up on a wideout.
Folks, stick around for the midnight post.
i think that the big competition this year will be, who establishes himself as the no. 2 qb and heir apparent for the following year.
on one hand we have brent rausch who displays flashes of brilliance and then we have the upstart former walkon shane austin. throw in a guy who will open some eyes in bryant moniz and then the three freshmen.
…and if the line doesn’t give the qb that extra second to pick up the wideout he just won’t have time to make that pass.
football is simple. alignment, assignment, and execution determines results.
as larry price coined the phrase, “physical superiority cancels all theory”.
jm#### sounds like the Auntie that tells you everything that happened on their trip…
somebody wake d1 and garret up.
al – so LP didn’t care about aa&e since pscat.
homey….we must have the same auntie.
is her name thelma?
Better to let Garret sleep…
speaking about thelma’s.
we had breakfast at marilou’s this weekend.
No, the one I’m talking about is from the Japanese side of the family.
Kinda far drive huh?
don’t miss out this special at mini garden restaurant on s. beretania ave.
99 cents for half a crispy skin chicken.
the catch is when you order at least $29.95 of food.
we did that trip tonight. basically three entrees will take you past the minimum and then you get that platefull of crispy chicken for less the mcd’s dollar menu.
we were out on the north shore. had a good time and ate well.
also had the gionvanni’s shrimp, rosie’s cantina, ted’s bakery, etc.
What’s the details for Saturday’s affair with Garret?
Back at work…taking oldest to White Plains this Saturday.
is that the kiosk operator?
i have had it before…good stuff.
jase…..yah. nice review. funny how we all have different tastes. i would not order any of the flavors that they ordered. hahaha.
the orange, mango, anything w/strawberry, are more to my liking.
New post, new recruit.
al,
Not only are we going to have the QB competition heat up next year…the Offensive Line is starting all Seniors this year in Letuli, Hisatake, Estes, Ieru, and Kia… That’s a brand new Offensive Line next year with the only guy with some starter experience being Bulla Ginlack?
As far as Malcolm Lane goes I hope he has a good season. I’d like to see him get more physical at times fighting for balls and getting off the line. He’s definitely a guy who can make big plays no doubt but I still think he hasn’t reached his full potential yet as a receiver. He is a great kick returner and hope he gets the nod to secure that job. I’m glad the players read the blog and I hope they don’t take the criticism in the wrong way.
There is no doubt, Taylor is the fastest Warrior. I hope he stays healthy. Is he slated for kickoff and punt return duties? If he’s shifty too he might be a pretty dangerous weapon.
A-Sports and I had a very nice Pho-Call today!
Kymry is confirmed for a lunch CC on Friday so all KAUAI TSAI-KOS:
