Glanville on ‘Bama forfeit: “We’ll take it”

As part of NCAA sanctions, Alabama must forfeit unspecified victories in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
It appears one of the overturned outcomes would be the Tide’s season-opening victory over UH in 2006.
“Without question, we’ll take it,” said Portland State head coach Jerry Glanville, who was the Warriors’ defensive coordinator that year. “Once we get the official word, I’m going to throw a parade.”

On Mouse Davis’ retirement, Glanville said: “He got married. He got married at Christmastime in Las Vegas. (Davis’ retirement is) all about love.”

Congratulations, M.R.C. Greenwood, and welcome to the University of Hawai‘i.
To help you get started, here are a few tips:
• Become a fan of UH athletics. That’s something every UH leader eventually learns is a necessary part of the job. Every leader needs to be heard, and the sports arena is the best forum. Here’s the math: the two O‘ahu daily newspapers and four major television stations have a combined 20 reporters covering UH sports but only two covering the UH Board of Regents regularly.
• Make friends with the Legislature. The lawmakers control the money, and the UH system needs money. But when you visit, go alone. You’re not Vincent Chase.
• Your first public speech should include an apology. For what? It doesn’t matter. Every new hire has done something controversial that has drawn criticism. Just apologize to those who might have been offended, even if you don’t think you did anything wrong. Hawai‘i embraces humble newcomers (see the Colt Brennan and Davone Bess stories).
• Ask athletic department administrative assistants Erika Buder-Nakasone and Jeannie Lee for advice. They created a calendar listing the birthdays of every athletic department employee and coach. Everybody enjoys a birthday greeting.
• Get to know the custodians. They are some of the most interesting people. In the athletic department, they are parent of a football player, an important figure in the hula world, a once famed long-distance runner, and so forth.
• And one favor: forgive the athletic department’s revolving deficit. In theory, the money already has been paid off; I mean, the electricity is still on and the athletes are getting scholarships. Now wipe it from the books. (And after that, if a deficit is incurred, then slap around the AD.) Besides, UH benefits from the extra parking revenue generated from on-campus sporting events and sales of H apparel. Uncle isn’t wearing an H hat because he really likes the engineering program.

Welcome back, Dave Austin.
The father of quarterback Shane Austin attended Punahou School as a freshman and sophomore before moving to California. But he made enough close friends at Punahou that he decided to attend the Punahou class of 1969’s 40th reunion dinner last night. Shane also attended the dinner.

Big Wave reports that former UH defensive end/running back Korey Reynolds will play for East Carolina this year.

    ST-
that is sage advice from someone who knows a thing or 2 about the UH system. BTW- you mentioned 6 BCS Bowl games yesterday, but i can only come up with 5- Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and Nat’l Champ. Am i missing one?

Reading comments, here, that harbor a one way of thinking is not for me

In the ship’s path comes a destination

Not being with the status quo, here, brings condemnation

A depository of happiness on my face subsides

When I see anchored people not wanting to change with the tides.

  47. Dirty Commish June 11, 2009 9:59 am

Hold the phone on the whole welcoming the new president thingy! I did some investigative journalism (Googled her) and found this little tidbit:

    From the San Francisco Chronicle:

The University of California’s second-in-command, Provost M.R.C. Greenwood, abruptly resigned Friday, and another senior administrator was placed on leave after the college system launched an investigation into possible favoritism in hiring…

According to UC President Robert Dynes, the university is investigating the possibility of impropriety in Greenwood’s decision last year to promote her friend, UC Santa Cruz Vice Provost Lynda Goff, to jobs at UC’s headquarters in Oakland. Goff, 56, was first hired as a faculty associate and then as director of UC’s new science and math initiative, which carries a salary of $192,100. In addition to being friends, Greenwood and Goff owned rental property together in Davis at the time…

    *GASP* Favortism??? Nooooo!!!

On second thought, she’ll fit right in with Hawaii’s lawmakers.

  48. Kazz June 11, 2009 10:01 am

    MeiLing,

Colorado State University Did a Beer Tasting test. The numbers below show the popularity. The Higher the Number the higher the ranking. Bud’s Kingsbury Malt Beverage was the outright winner.

    Bud Light .89
    Budweiser 1.00
    Coors .56
    Coors Light .79
Fort Collins CO tap water .06
    Gallo Pink Chablis .09
    Kingsbury Malt Beverage 1.14
    Michelob 1.04
    Miller .68
    Miller Lite .57
    Old Milwaukee .81
    Schaefer .69
    Sugar-water and yeast .57

Who participated in the tests, you ask?

    Why… slugs, of course!

Get those shallow bottom dishes for plastic planting pots and fill with beer. The next morning you will have tons of dead or really drunk slugs.

    Saw this from WSN:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The NCAA has scheduled a teleconference to announce a decision on Alabama amid reports that the football program will forfeit at least 10 wins and the university placed on probation.

The teleconference to discuss the decision by the Committee on Infractions will be at 3 p.m. ET Thursday. No details were disclosed in the announcement, but several media outlets reported that the university will have to forfeit wins from the 2006 and 2007 football seasons that included players who obtained free textbooks for other students.

ESPN reported that Alabama would have to surrender 21 total wins from 2005-2007.

Nothing against Alabama, as their visiting fans have been good people and I hope we’ll have a home and home with them again in the future, BUT… I must say this is refreshing.

Personally I think this is good for college football. It sets an example, one that has been almost ignored up until recently (i.e. USC’s issues).

Far too long, the powerful and wealthy in collegiate athletics have been given a LONG leash to walk on. The NCAA SHOULD continue to use the “choke chain”!

problem with salt is that a lot of it can get into the ground and that may not be to the liking of your plants.. BEER on the other hand, safer and at worse you will have singing cats and crooning dogs.

Any recommendations out there for a nice townside – anywhere between Kahala and Kalihi – sports bar with great food, a friendly atmosphere, and lots of BIG television sets for Sunday’s NBA playoff game?

Re the new UH president: I refer to her Initials Greenwood and will most likely not use her name at all if I ever meet her. Do the Yes Ma’am/No Ma`am thing if necessary.

The situation reminds me of the woman who headed the Neighborhood Commission office early in the Hannemann Administration whose first name was pronounced Baby – I could not bring myself to call any grown woman Baby. We also had a cat named Baby Girl who died in 2002 – and all I could think of was Baby Girl whenever I saw the woman – although they didn’t look at all alike.

We’re in the process of renewing our Wahine volleyball tickets and will be asking for better seats below the concourse aisle opposite the teams. Anyone interested in putting together a Tsai-ko Supporters Team?

    El Guapo,

    Agreed.

  93. Garret June 11, 2009 11:20 am

Pro Football Weekly reports that the Bears expect Pisa to earn the starting job soon.

Although Nick Roach remains the first-team strong-side linebacker for the time being, team sources believe it’s only a matter of time before newly acquired Pisa Tinoisamoa, a proven playmaking commodity familiar with Lovie Smith’s defensive system from their days together in St. Louis, replaces Roach as the starter.

  94. Hitman 24 June 11, 2009 11:20 am

(Some unnamed tabloid) is doing a series on the Top 100 UH Football players. Pretty safe bet that Colt would be number one but who would be in the top 5.

    1. Colt Brennan
    2. Jason Elam
    3. Jesse Sapolu
    4. June Jones
    5. Timmy Chang

  95. Garret June 11, 2009 11:20 am

Could this Warrior recruit end up in pro baseball instead?

Recent Kapolei High graduate Kalani Brackenridge, a shortstop, was picked in the 44th round by the Tampa Bay Rays, the 1,339th overall selection.

Brackenridge has already signed a letter of intent to play football for the University of Hawaii. His father, Lyle Brackenridge, played pro baseball and his half-brother, Tyron, is a cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

  96. Garret June 11, 2009 11:24 am

    Hitman,

JJ wouldn’t make my top players list. It is hard to leave any players out, but I’d definitely take JJ out of that top 5 and probably Timmy Chang too…I’d replace them with Niko Noga, Al Noga, Samson Satele–wait, I’m already over the list for a top 5 because Colt, Elam, and Sapolu have to be on it too and I still have others to add!

  97. Kazz June 11, 2009 11:24 am

    Garret,

44th round pick? Not sure Brackenridge would take it.

  98. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2009 11:26 am

Word on the street is one of the panelist picked Niko Noga No. 1; another picked Jason Elam.

  99. roysan16 June 11, 2009 11:29 am

    Kazz,

This one I’ll respond to. … Whatever you’re saying is a microsom of the ills of this blog and your way of thinking. If for a second you think I’m writing with having biases or trying to write to impress (the other parties) you’re … (wrong). How many time have I gone against the grain, and allude to … seeing things without taking personal preferences?

  100. Garret June 11, 2009 11:29 am

In my opinion there is a big difference between putting Manti down and saying that I would prefer to hear about from a Warrior player because there are so few spots available on the WB show for Warrior players. Is it unreasonable to want to hear about how the offseason workouts are going from a player since the coaches cannot tell us about them because they cannot be there? There are a lot of worthy guests for the WB show but there are only a limited number of spots, so is it wrong to look at things with a bias towards the Warriors?

That is just my opinion and I respect that others might feel differently. That is the last I’ll say about this issue no matter what else is said.

    Colt Brennan
    Jason Elam
    Jesse Sapolu
    Al Noga
    Niko Noga
    Samson Satele
    Pisa Tinoisamoa
    John Woodcock
    Levi Stanley
    Jeris White

  103. A-House June 11, 2009 11:38 am

    Hitman:

I agree with Garret. June Jones did very little during his playing days at UH. I would, however, include Timmy Chang on my list.

I would also consider Colt, Jesse, Al Noga, Jeris White, and Jason Elam.

I would be most interested in reviewing the list as it will, undoubtedly, go back to the Wonder years of the 20’s and 30s.

All that aside, I marvel at UH’s progress in football given the number of years versus other established schools on the mainland such as Army/Navy who have played each other for over 100 years! Wonder how many schools are over 80 years?

  104. rage777 June 11, 2009 11:38 am

Imagine the silence if UH had actually won that day! The Crimson Tide would not believe what they witnessed.

  107. Hitman 24 June 11, 2009 11:45 am

I guess it depends on what the criteria was. Is it based upon their accomplishments while at school? If so, then June and even Jesse would be out.

Not sure who were the best, but these are my five favorites (in no particular order):

    Niko Noga
    Colt Brennan
    Michael Carter
    Matt Harding
    Nate Ilaoa

Harding? I just liked the idea that there was a possibility he would block a kick.
Plus, he was the one who came up with the line after the Holiday Bowl victory: “Their mouths wrote a check their butts couldn’t cash.”

As for playing Illinois, Harding said: “If you’re scared, buy a dog.”

Then again, I liked how Al Noga once said he was from “Planet Kalihi.”

Plus, he was the one who came up with the line after the Holiday Bowl victory: “Their mouths wrote a check their butts couldn’t cash.”

Oh wait, was it “Your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash?”

“You don’t own that plane the taxpayers do!”

“Take me to bed or lose me forever.”

AHHHHHHHH I gotta pop in that DVD tonight. That entire movie was soooooo dang quotable…

  117. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2009 12:31 pm

All right, will do..in fact I’ll just repel what they say by not giving them the grounds in which to say anything.

    Re: Manti.
With the logistical restrictions we face — lunchtime slot on Tuesdays, locked into a downtown studio — it’s difficult to book guests. We also have to make sure the guest actually shows up, on time, especially since we’ve got to free up about four staff workers.
So when it was offered that I wouldn’t have to book a guest, I’m like, cool. But then Manti was never asked, so it came back to me to find a guest. That’s when I hunted down Malcolm Lane.
Nobody is getting paid to do the show, and it doesn’t appear we’re making any effort to sell ads for it, so I think the show is merely a complement to the blog.
And that was the deal on the Manti situation.

But, if anything, I’m supposed to be monitoring content. And while everyone makes great points, sometimes the message is lost — or ignored — because of hostile asides.
There was one poster whose comments I’d just skip over, and, it was a shame, because it appeared he would make some interesting points. But because the poster was driving away others, or into silence, I had to step in, and I really, really don’t like to step in.

  150. Garret June 11, 2009 1:14 pm

    A-House,

Colt McCoy went to camps that Texas put on for years, grew up watching Texas games, and his best friend (Shipley, the WR he’s been throwing so many passes to at Texas) committed to Texas the year before him. His family gets to watch all of his games in person, which would not be possible if he played out of state since his Dad is quite busy being a high school football coach in Texas.

Do you really think that Colt would have gone to *any* school other than Texas? He committed so early (once they offered, in the Spring of his Junior Year). His parents are both from Texas, and both graduated from Abilene Christian University. Colt’s Dad (Brad) played football for Abilene Christian University and Colt’s Grandfather (Burl) is in the Abilene Christian University Hall of Fame.

Click on my name for a link to the Abilene Christian University website that states that Colt’s Dad played for ACU and not UH. When was Colt McCoy a UH fan?

  160. Darren June 11, 2009 1:19 pm

The AP article state that Bama’s wins will be “vacated” instead of “forfeited”. Has that been changed so UH gets the “w”?

Forcing Alabama to vacate the wins, instead of forfeitures, means the opponents who lost those games won’t be allowed to change their own records to reflect a victory.

  161. Garret June 11, 2009 1:19 pm

    ST,

I guess that makes sense…I just wish that they had thought of this in advance and someone could have unlocked the field in the morning. Is there a way for a trusted player to get a key?

Report from Today’s Washington practice has bad news for both Colt and Daniel.

Jason Campbell again looked sharp, particularly in the red zone portion of practice. He said he’ll spend the time off visiting his family but still preparing for the season. “The next six weeks, you take a little break and come back ready to roll because it’s going to be hot and steamy.”

Fourth-string quarterback Chase Daniel didn’t receive many snaps on Monday but got a ton of work today, including time with the first-string offense. It’s going to be tough for Daniel to make the 53-man roster because Todd Collins still looks serviceable, which keeps Colt Brennan as the No. 3 passer.

    Dear Dr. Greenwood,

My sentiments on you becoming the next UH President. On your shoulders bares the hopes and dreams of many, as you are their leader, guidance and visionary. Looking up towards you are the wanting eyes of the administrators, faculty and student yearning to be led in the right direction.

Navigating your path where everybody has a voice and no one entity has preferential treatment would be wise steps.

But the giant steps are in reservation, as they are for everlasting in dormancy, are the ones I want you to take. For no other UH President thinks of suppressing the influences of the political machine and local people in lieu of what might be a better way of doing things. And this ground needs to be broken if we expect to move in a better direction.

of course we stopped to refuel at giovanni’s shrimp shack. amazing how they still have this line all day long. i guess at 13 bucks for a plate of a dozen jumbo shrimp scampi with rice is worth it.

    Re-JoPierre Davis

This item was included two blogs ago:

Defensive back JoPierre Davis, who is on suspension following his March arrest on assault charges, worked out yesterday. He remains on scholarship and is allowed to attend classes, but he is not on the team’s 120-player active roster.

And I was wondering, like maybe others, of what’s going on here. I googled, checked newspaper archives in seeing if there was a nearing court date and I didn’t find any. Without a court appearance, seemingly, his status will always be in limbo. Ninety some days before the season JPD is holding onto the hope he’ll be exonerated soon as the reason as to why I see him working out. I also spotted him working out by himself at Cartwright Field. I observed him practicing in a DB stance, crouching low and doing back peddling drills.

Initially when I read the newspaper articles I was convinced there was no hope he’d ever be playing again because seemingly the charges against him were so egregious that he wouldn’t escape being incarcerated. But then after reading additional information there might be a chance for him.

Yes, JPD is definitely guilty of some indiscretions. But if you were on the jury on this case–you’d have to admit that the assailant and victim don’t fit the stereotypes. And it’s not an easy case to judge. Because there’d be a lot of conflicts: she said this, and he said that– after a dorm party where there may or may not have been the presence of alcohol or other drugs..

One, JPD doesn’t fit the profile of a brutalizing, rapist and assailant as befitting of one facing the charges that he does. On the first encounter, she resisted his advances and told him to leave. And he complied. On a second encounter, he laughed at her, she threw coffee at him. Yet he didn’t retaliate. On the third encounter he touched her, she slapped him and he punched her.

Of the victim, she doesn’t fit the portrayal as someone attacked. And admittedly, she was embarrassed as the reasoning she gave as to why she didn’t report the assault earlier. This is plausible. But it doesn’t fit, for it seems her motives are in line of retaliating against JPD by pressing charges for him mocking her.

Having gone to school and been with college girls after parties, I can relate to how men often have the tables turn on them on the morning after when the happy girl the night before looks down, now, at you like a snake.

In the JoPierre case I hope he has a fair trial and if he’s exonerated I hope he’s spared being penalized, too, and missing out on the football season.

roysan16 ~ Your defense of JPD is timely. He is in a very gray area right now. I was just curious, about your interest in his case.

Is it because you feel that he’s wasting a schollie that could have been put to better use?…or…Do you feel like he just needs a chance to clear all the ‘opala’ in his life and come back to reclaim his rightful place on the team?

  263. al ™ June 11, 2009 10:05 pm

what’s the latest on any new asst coaches for wbb and mvbb?

that would compensate for any missed opportunities in wbb recruiting. it would also set the tone for the future of wbb.

they should use these nonpay days for future furloughs.

two pony backs that i recall watching with awe were….
    nolan george and alvin yamashiro.

both were no bigger than homey but boy were they exciting to watch.

i am sure that wbb has been assigned.
too bad mike can’t return to sports. i liked his style, bringing an intellectual side to things.

oh, i am not saying that he was the only intellect on the sports staff or in his family. just saying how he brought a different perspective to things that were out of the realm of normalcy in sports reporting.

:-O Does this mean that ST isn’t “normal”?

Hmm… after nearly 28,000 cases worldwide (198 in Hawaii) the swine flu is now declared a pandemic. Though it is classified as a mild illness with a mortality rate of about 1/2 of 1 percent.

if the twenty or so early offers would all commit today, we would have an outstanding class.

heard tell that there are more than the 20 offers that are being reported publicly on the table. heard tell there are a couple of commits but no one wants to publish otherwise others will try to swoop in on our finds.

Al ~ Now that we broke 300…

How about “Sgt. Napu’unoa” da pint sized KS QB? I think he was 5”6″ at the time. Sometimes he was on the KS bus from upper campus down thru Prep School to the school st. terminal after school. He was a senior, I was in 7th grade. I was bigger than him!

Charlie Arnold was his fullback, Mike Chun on the end. Those guys were great players! I believe Kama Krab is family to Charlie.

  306. Kekoa June 11, 2009 11:27 pm

Al ~ I meant to say go check your mail…I know, in this economy – any kine check in da mail is a welcome surprise!

  307. Ralph June 11, 2009 11:28 pm

Al I don’t see how not publicizing the commits to UH will help their future recruitment…I would think once one signs on the others will not hesitate to commit…SMU has 10. BYU 13. Most of the Pac 10 teams have at least 6 except Oregon State with 1…Huskies are in double figures, and the Cougars have a few…poaching will occur but all the teams coming to Hawaii already know who the players are that they want

  308. Kekoa June 11, 2009 11:31 pm

CRW ~ My days of ‘swooping’ are long past! Whenever I manage to slip into a lucky slot, it’s with a considerable amount of huffing and puffing! 🙄

  309. Kekoa June 11, 2009 11:40 pm

Not surprised to hear that the new UH President’s home on the hill is awaiting renovation. It seems like every time a contract is awarded, the winning contractor is delayed while the loser files a complaint.

Maybe she can make that her first project. Put a stop to these ridiculous work stoppages so people will just learn to accept defeat and move to improve their offer for the next bid.

  310. MeiLing June 11, 2009 11:45 pm

  311. Ralph June 11, 2009 11:56 pm

Kekoa its the people who write the specs and award the contracts, too much incompetence and political collusion…remember when the UH softball stadium was first built and the fans couldn’t see the field around home plate, and the State had to fill in the stadium with 3 feet of sod

I see that the OIA is pushing its weight around again in the HHSAA.
It seems that the other leagues would prefer to maintain the inclusive approach to state tournaments. Perhaps rather than voting en masse to reduce tourney size, the OIA should simply elect to send fewer representatives.

  330. Garret June 12, 2009 5:12 am

Texas really does a great job with focusing their camps to achieve certain goals. Last weekend they had a camp for their commits, so that they could bond and help keep each other committed. That is a great strategy to defeat poaching, as committed players can contact other commits with no NCAA restrictions.

They also brought in 5 players who don’t have offers yet, to see how well they would bond with the coaches and the commits. They brought in one player with an offer who hasn’t committed to anyone yet (top WR recruit who has a final 5 of Texas, OU, USC, Texas Tech, and OK State). They didn’t offer that recruit’s two friends and Oklahoma and Texas Tech have…so they probably won’t get him.

This weekend they are having a camp for the top 2011 recruits. The camp gives the coaches even more time with the recruits than the Junior Days, so this is a huge recruiting weekend for 2011. Forming the bonds early with recruits and getting the evaluations done as early as possible has been the key to getting an early jump on recruiting each year.

Not only are camps effective, but recruits pay their own way to them so they really save on the recruiting budget. I hope that Mac and Tony Tuioti are able to get ahead in recruiting for local recruits by the use of camps and Junior Days. Get some recruits early, let the commits recruit future teammates and help fight off poachers, and then UH won’t have to worry about new about commits leaking out.

  331. Garret June 12, 2009 5:18 am

“new about” should be “news about”

  332. Garret June 12, 2009 5:37 am

Two Washington State freshmen have been suspended due to their recent arrests…I wonder if they will play against UH this season?

Two Washington State freshman football players, safeties Tyree Toomer and LeAndre Daniels, have been suspended from team activities following their arrest by WSU campus police in connection with the alleged theft of bicycles.

WSU police lieutenant Steve Hansen said witnesses saw the two take a hacksaw from a house under remodel. The arrest came, Hanson said, after Toomer and Daniels allegedly used the hacksaw to take four bicycles from a storage area under Regents residence hall.

    Feature on RGM.

The 22-year-old is at only his first CFL training camp yet, because so much of what the Lions hope to accomplish offensively is centered around him, the receiver with the brown-tipped dreadlocks is being treated like a proven veteran.

It was during a stretch where Grice-Mullen had a pair of 100-yard receiving contests and showed the vertical stretch possibilities that could be added to the Lions’ offence that come from a 4.4-second runner in the 40-yard dash.

To Grice-Mullen, there were many bigger challenges in college at Hawaii.

“My first game I played USC and my second was against Michigan State. It ain’t no pressure,” he said Wednesday. “I thought I did well last year for somebody who had never played in the CFL. I don’t feel like there’s pressure as to whether I can play at this level.”

djmitcho ~ There was a Homey sighting in the upper 48?

Whoa! Call out the National Guard, hide all the women and children! Alert the Washington State Troopers (I like their drill sgt. hats!). Call the JPO’s…wait no, school is out for the summer already. Approach with extreme caution, he may be loaded!
