A step in their spring

This is a big spring for:
• Offensive lineman Laupepa Letuli. He is talented enough to have earned auditions at left tackle, left guard, tight end, running back and defensive end. But injuriies have prevented him from ever having a healthy training camp. Now a senior, he get his shot at right tackle.
• Defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea. At the all-star practices in December 2004,, Rocky Savaiigaea was regarded near the top of the Warriors’ wish list. And that was in a recruiting class that eventually would include Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, John Estes, Letuli, Aaron Kia, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane, Brashton Satele, and so forth. He’s never really played much because of injuries. This is his last chance.
• Middle linebacker Brashton Satele. He became a starter last year. This year, he becomes a leader. There’s a difference.
• Safety Spencer Smith. He’s the only remaining Jerry Glanville recruit.  While Aaron Brown and Lametrius Davis are expected to contend for starting jobs, Smith has the advantage. Brown does not arrive until this summer, and Davis is going to work at corner for the first part of spring practice. Smith has been in the system three years, and this spring he gets to work under Chris Tormey.
• Kicker Brett Symonds. Symonds certainly has the leg, but there’s a message when  UH decided to bring in a preferred walk-on this summer, and pursued a kicker who just committed to Georgia.
• The 15 or so walk-ons on the bubble who are  hoping to stick around past the Green-White Game. The Warriors will have to make some cuts to make room for the newcomers.

Hey, some of our readers showed up at the softball game yesterday:

My daughter missed her flight out of D.C. this morning, which meant she got to hang out on the East Coast another day. Which meant she could take this sorta cool picture of the cherry blossoms.

Last year, I was hoping that Laupepa could play at guard.

I think he would have been the best guard on last year’s team.

He could’ve been the best guard on this year’s team also.

But as ST pointed out, weight/injuries were factors.

    Have a great year ‘Pepa.

Thanks for all the good info and juicy tidbits. I think I’m gonna isolate my lens on the O-line and “Da Bulldoza”. Glad to read that the Warriors are going back to the shoot. If Coach Shaw gets them big boys playing like we all know they can, it’ll be lights out a Aloha Stadium…

    A-House –

I understand you have volunteered my services to fix the video tower. Ok, I’ll get my work clothes ready. I’ll do what I can with hammer and nails, BUT I’m better at yardwork and landscaping. BTW, a little birdie flew up to me and reported that a gentleman down my street was toiling in his yard. The birdie also whispered to me that he overheard the gentleman mutter loudly, “ho man, if A-House and Mrs. A-House help out, I could be out of here mo quick! Hey, Wena, bring me a cold drink, will you sweetie!” See, didn’t I tell you that my landscaping skills have gained me a notable reputation. Jim Donovan, hope you’re lurking. Just waiting for your call to duty on cleaning up the lower campus to help out your lone groundskeeper.

  53. Mrs. A-House March 29, 2009 3:48 pm

    LizKauai –

Can’t forget my very special friend. Belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY! good wishes to you, too. Your casual regular meals are gourmet ones by A-House ohana standards, so I’m confident your special birthday meal/celebration was really something special. Best wishes to the premiere Tsaikette Lady of our WB Blog!

    Off-topic question.

We need a new printer for our computer. Any recommendations on a standard, easy to use printer that just prints Word documents. Nothing fancy, no need be color. Cheaper the better, but best buy for the buck. Mahalo for any suggestions.

  64. Committed Road Warrior March 29, 2009 6:49 pm

    Mrs. A-House #58:

The cheapest method would be to mooch off of ST’s printer (and Internet connection to boot) 👿 😈

Other than that I suppose you could probably find an inkjet printer for cheap at some nearby big-box store. What did you have before (if you had a previous printer)? Sure the printer will be cheap but the refill cartridges will probably cost just as much as what you paid for the printer itself. Weird, eh?

I haven’t kept up on what the better brands of inkjet printers are…..I use a desktop laser printer since most of my printing consists of lengthy scholarly peer reviews and el guapo-sized Federal regulations that sometimes span hundreds of pages. Back when I was still using inkjet printers, the prominent brands were Canon, HP, Epson, and Lexmark. Don’t know if that has changed since…..

  65. Committed Road Warrior March 29, 2009 6:53 pm

Mrs. A-House’s post #58 also reminded me that I should probably start firing up the printing press and print out the material for my meeting tomorrow. 300 pages IIRC. It may look nice and pretty now but this time tomorrow most of it will be marked up pretty good.

  66. bighilofan2 March 29, 2009 6:59 pm

Thanks for repping me at Kristin’s services.

Much aloha to Curveball, and continued prayers for Kristin and her memory.

Like you said Mrs. AHouse, tuff when you been outta da loop for a few days. need to catch up myself.

  67. Wayne O. March 29, 2009 7:01 pm

There are a lot of “ifs” all right. I’m really worried about the defense and special teams. Rocky, Blaze and even Brashton have been hurt a lot. If they’re hurt all the time they can’t help the team. And they don’t have a lot of experienced depth behind them either. The most important guy on offense is new offensive line coach Shaw because last year the line to be nice, just “sucked.” As Ferd said his column today, stupid penalties and leading the nation sacks given up tells you right there how important the change in coach was critical. I hope Coach Shaw does a terrific job, but I’m worried too because most of the same players are back. As they say “they are, what they think they are.” I wouldn’t get too excited
about this team, but I want to be surprised. I do think the receiving corps will be very good though. Just a feeling.

  68. tom March 29, 2009 7:10 pm

Mrs. A-House: I have been using Hewlett Packard for most of my printing and Canon for photos. While inkjet ink is on the pricey side, it has gotten to be fairly competitive with laser cartridges.

No particular model but there is always HPs at discounts at Office Depot or Office Max.

If it’s just printing documents, I think lasers are better. But like Mr Inkplus says, they make money selling ink, not selling printers.

  77. Kekoa March 29, 2009 7:27 pm

Just reflecting on what a beautiful day I was able to share with Curveball and all of the Tsaiko’s that attended breakfast and the Memorial service for Kristin.

I want to extend a special Mahalo to Homey. He, his daughter and her friend, were pressed into duty at the beach. We gathered to form our prayer circle around Curveball, and I rendered the memorial prayer.

  78. Kekoa March 29, 2009 7:29 pm

Homey then took the special urn from Curveball that contained Kristins ashes, and paddled out a few hundred yards. Each of us placed our flower petals in the outgoing tide. After Homey scattered the ashes, he took off his lei, and placed it in the water. He, his daughter and friend, scattered the flower petals Mei Ling and JaM had prepared.

In true Tsaiko tradition, we all went to my hale and enjoyed fuud with adult beverages that Kristin would surely have approved of!

Thanks to all in attendance. We all shared a special moment together I will never forget. Sjmacro chronicled the event with some beautiful photos that he will post soon. Thanks Jerry!

  79. bighilofan2 March 29, 2009 7:31 pm

    Mrs. AHouse
I bought a Brothers laserjet printer today. Office Max was

It was wonderful to hear about Kristin’s Memorial Service. I’m glad that the Tsaikos were able to be there to honor Kristin and support Curveball. I wish that I could have been there…

  88. Garret March 29, 2009 8:03 pm

    Mrs. A-House,

I’m looking through the Best Buy ad (prices valid from today through Saturday) for their Pearl City store and they have several printers on sale. The best choice would depend on what you want.

They have an Epson printer/copier/scanner/fax for $99.95, but I wouldn’t trust that if you are going to print a a lot of documents.

They have 3 other printers on sale (one Epson, one Kodak, and one HP) that all have built-in WiFi and are at different price levels, the best choice depends on what you need in a printer.

  89. Garret March 29, 2009 8:08 pm

    Mrs. A-House,

If you click on my name, it will take you to a search on Amazon for printers. There are some good deals available now on Amazon and you get free shipping and no tax to Hawaii. Your choice might be based on price, or on whether you want it to also be a copier/FAX/scanner, whether you want it to print photos (I like Canon for photos), whether you want a laserjet or inkjet, etc.

    VIDEO TOWER UPDATE

spoke with chris williams today. what they really want is to build a new 60 foot video tower in the middle of the field.

he will speak further to coach mack and the a.d. dept to get the particulars on their end. compliance, specs, funding, liability are issues that come to mind.

i told him we can help somehow with scope of the matter to be determined after what UH wants and can do itself.

i will meet with him sometime tomorrow.

stay tuned folks, this is bigger than first imagined, but, yet doable.

Article about how much the NFL prizes offensive tackles…

Eight teams drafted offensive tackles in the first round last April. Five more could go in the first round this year when the draft kicks off April 25, possibly four in the first 10 selections.

A glamour position? Hardly. A tackle’s name is usually heard only in the pregame announcements and when the officials call a false start or holding infraction.

The position, however, carries a unique premium today.

Quarterbacks might be the cornerstones of franchises. Running backs provide punch. Wide receivers make flashy plays.

Yet the game’s guts remain rooted in line play. No quarterback succeeds without protection. No running back survives long without holes to hit. No receiver catches a pass if the quarterback doesn’t have the time to throw it.

Nuts and bolts. That’s the key to the revitalization of teams now

The Panthers can boast bookend tackles in Otah and Jordan Gross. Gross, their No. 1 pick in 2003, recently signed a six-year contract that pays $30.5 million in the first three years. That’s the most ever over three years for an offensive lineman.

It’s also the premium paid for a left tackle, who, on most teams, protects the quarterback’s blind side. The left tackle won’t get much help in pass protection, with the tight end usually on the other side, and he’s usually facing the opponent’s best pass rusher.

“I think most teams have a priority of positions,” Mayock says. “On the offensive side of the ball, it starts with quarterback. On the offensive line, it’s the left tackle.”

    Al,

Wow, that is a big project! I’d like to help of course, but it sounds like it will take awhile before they can get everything lined up to start actually building that tower.

  100. Mrs. A-House March 29, 2009 8:25 pm

    al:

I will presume that the 60′ tower will be self-propelled so it can be moved for other teams to utilize the field. Also, will they move it to Cooke Field when it rains? Tower may have to “sectionalized”.

A nice “roof” would be good to protect the video coordinator and coaches who want to view practice from the “top”.

  101. curveball March 29, 2009 8:50 pm

I would like to thank all the Tsiakos that were at breakfast and the beach today. Also to all of you who were thinking of Kristin today…Special thanks to Kekoa who really has been my rock through this whole ordeal..those who were able to attend today know what a special moment the day was..also Homey, Thank You so much..It would have been sort of embarrassing for me to drown today. Diana, thank you for being such a gracious hostess today..Tsiakos are again unbelievable..

  102. al ™ March 29, 2009 9:10 pm

video tower….yes it did sound like a lot more than materials. in the meantime, i will keep my ears close to the ground and find out what it is they want.

it sounds to be more of a capital improvement or replacement rather than a repair and maintenance issue. but, as i said, one step at a time. from my other life, i am experienced in govt projects, though, mostly from the fed side of the house.

    more to come. patience.

  103. al ™ March 29, 2009 9:12 pm

ahouse….i am sure that there are some prototype video towers in use throughout the country that mack or jd are aware of and could use as resources for there model.

  104. Mrs. A-House March 29, 2009 9:15 pm

    Garret –

    BigHiloFan2 –

    Kekoa –

Excuse the lapse in time responding to your posts. Post #100 was from A-House (da man), not me. Nonetheless, I am grateful for the additional input from you three wonderful gentlemen. I’m confident we’ll be in possession of a very nice printer very soon. Thanks very much for your time and concern.

  105. Mrs. A-House March 29, 2009 9:25 pm

    Curveball –

Your promise to Kristin was fulfilled today, and you can rest assured that she is at peace. Although our ohana were unable to attend the breakfast/service, you and Kristin are in my daily prayers and will continue to be.

    Kekoa –

Tears welled in my eyes as I read your description of how you, Diana, Homey, his daughter, her friend, JaM and Mei Ling and SJMacro came together with Curveball to provide the loving support that made it all happen. Thanks for sharing and representing us Tsaikos.

  106. al ™ March 29, 2009 9:29 pm

i finally got to look at the spring roster….

lwj is switching to #23 his old hs number i think. here’s hoping that he finally has his day(s) this season. we’ve been waiting.

the kapolei twin towers, ahmad and toilolo, aren’t they supposed to both be sophs this year?

seems like there are several other typos on the spring roster regarding their actual “class”.

with nearly a dozen rb candidates….i am thinking some will be valuable special team members.

finally, is kimo alo the older brother of kahuku recruit, kamalani alo?

  107. al ™ March 29, 2009 9:29 pm

    oh almost forgot…………….chad preacher????

  108. Rob25 March 29, 2009 9:33 pm

Thank you curveball for letting me share in that special moment to honor Kristin. I was very moved…homey and co. were awesome…*high five…okay low five to you homes*…I was privileged to share this memory with you and the other Tsaikos.

Thank you to the King and Queen of the ceded lands…such gracious hosts and good fun playing cards. Adult beverages aren’t my forte…since I was the limo *small kine* driver for a bunch of guys. Now I know the way…you are gonna regret it!

KK – hello, how you? Go home…stop drinking!

  109. Rob25 March 29, 2009 9:36 pm

Shoutout to curveball, Kekoa, Koakane, James, sjmacro, MeiLing, JaM, Brie, Ralph, BG, Homey, his daughter and her friend for the moving tribute!

Now I have the sunburn to prove it!

  110. Mrs. A-House March 29, 2009 9:37 pm

    Koakane –

I’m relieved that your survived the inadvertent dunking. Don’t be embarrassed. Your focus was on an important happening, and your iphone came through for you. Thanks for representing.

And so, dear friends, I am signing off this evening. Wishing you all a great week.

  111. curveball March 29, 2009 9:57 pm

    Rob25:

    Thank You………..

  112. Cindy-cenn March 29, 2009 9:58 pm

Thank you all for sharing about the services for Kristin. I was thinking of
going, but I had family obligations. Curveball, I will keep your family in my
    prayers.

  113. Jason March 29, 2009 10:04 pm

We actually scattered my Dad’s ashes at White Plains too, but we never had to risk cell phone damage or anything like that. We got a biodegradable bag (an ugly green colored thing) from Hosoi, and put his ashes in that. When we placed it in the water, the bag melted away and the ashes spread with the current.

It’s really a nice way to honor someone you love. Every time I go to White Plains, I think of my Dad. And now, I’ll think of Kristin too.

  114. Kekoa March 29, 2009 10:09 pm

My dear Tsaiko’s ~ I acknowledge your appreciation for the events of the day. We were all for one, and one for all. Diana and I thank you for being so supportive.

Esme and the Moms will be pleasantly surprised that the color pink played an important part in this day. Who would have guessed that Homey’s daughter would show up with a very *hot* Pink surfboard!

I’m beginning to wonder how or why the color pink has slowly crept into our formerly UH Green world. It borders on a quiet conspiracy.

  115. Kekoa March 29, 2009 10:20 pm

Al ~ We did discuss the Tower of Power project this afternoon. Then, we decided that flying a camera laden Blimp out of the SSC would be too hard to control on a windy day like today.

Tomorrow Koakane and I will evaluate the situation and report our on-site observations to you. We might have a certain Engineer offer his recommendations as well.

  116. curveball March 29, 2009 10:23 pm

    Kekoa:
You did not mention ..it was Dark Pink

  117. Kekoa March 29, 2009 10:36 pm

Attention anyone who happens to be over on the Windward side tomorrow. You are cordially invited to join myself and my pahtna, Koanake out at the Bay View Golf Course Restaurant for lunch. We should be there between 12:30 to about 2 PM. After lunch, we’ll be negotiating another *Homecoming* event there for the Tsaiko Ohana.

After that, we will head over to the UH practice field to welcome on the 2009 edition of the Warrior Football Team!

    GO WARRIORS!

  118. Jason March 29, 2009 10:37 pm

Hmm, I think it’s fitting that when you mix Warrior Green (PMS 3435) and deep pink:

  119. Kekoa March 29, 2009 10:39 pm

Oh!…you mean the surboard! Silly me…it was a dark, hot pink one…Swish!

  120. Jason March 29, 2009 10:59 pm

Kekoa: I’m checking out the bus schedule, and I think I can make it. But if I don’t show up, that’s because the bus didn’t want to cooperate with me; in which case, I’ll go back to school, study, and wait until practice later in the afternoon.

  121. Kekoa March 29, 2009 11:16 pm

Jason ~ If you are leaving from your house, I can swing by and pick you up. If you are able to make it from Manoa, we would be glad to have you come over. You can return with us for practice, and I’ll give you a ride home after.

  122. Kekoa March 29, 2009 11:20 pm

Duffer! Check your email ASAP!…I found a really great Condo for you to consider, at a fantastic price.

    Goodnite Everybody!

    Howzit Tsai-kos!!

Back from the Big Island. Doing laundry so I’ll be up late tonight. Had a great time, altho the weather wasn’t great – Waikoloa was windy, South Kona was voggy and Paauilo was cold and rainy. Spent Thursday down in South Kona, Friday and today at the hotel hanging around the pool and lagoon. There are about 7 honu in the lagoon and they’re oblivious to da two-legged creatures swimming around them.

My sister’s wedding was nice, even if it was cold and rainy, and therefore, muddy. Very casual, country-style. My sister was, of course, gorgeous. My nephew and the clergyman (my cuz) were barefoot and the groom wore jeans. Much impromptu entertainment by my sis’ halau sisters and her students.

Nice to be home though. Keed goes back to school tomorrow. All the way home, she kept saying, “School? What are you talking about? What’s school?” 😀

    GO BIG EAST!!!

  126. al ™ March 30, 2009 12:00 am

    kekoa/koakane……

i am in contact with uh folks. we have preliminarily discussed what it is that they needed. it is more involved than one could imagine. i will let you know more as the plan unfolds. i believe that a proto type video tower will be the final product, one that will be in compliance with safety standards as well.

don’t worry when the time comes i know who the go to guys are.

  127. Kekoa March 30, 2009 12:21 am

Al ~ I take it our initial plan to use the blimp did not meet your safety standards. J/K…Check your email, I have a more serious solution.

  128. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER March 30, 2009 1:08 am

Nitey nite and Warrior Tower of power Dreams!

  130. HiFlyer March 30, 2009 1:50 am

Sounds like coach mac wants a permanent video tower instead of the mobile scissor lift that they currently use, these type of lifts will sway back and forth about a foot and should not be used when the winds are above 25 mph.

  131. HiFlyer March 30, 2009 2:04 am

Pomai – I don’t think that is what coach Mac is looking for, I believe they already are using a larger self-propelled scissors type lift and the problem may be the rocking and swaying when elevated to its maximim height or any height more than ten feet.

Ferd: “Perhaps Donovan has to run his decision up to the UH hierarchy. Maybe Nash, or his representative, has yet to sign off on whatever their negotiations with Donovan have produced.”

Perhaps they know what they are doing and are doing it as judiciously as they can. I don’t think Coach Nash would compromise his recruiting and I don’t think A.D. Donovan would either. IMHO

  143. djmitcho March 30, 2009 8:15 am
