Day III, Practice II
Nothing real exciting as they continue to work in small groups and then scrimmage
Higgins working with more of what you’d call the veterans in the final scrimmage with Adolpho, Magill. OHs rotating are Long. Passi and Manu-Olevao/ L/DSs switching out as well.
Long continues to impress from 3-meter. Koelsch as well with her blocking. Kahakai looking good as is Mendoza.
That’s about it for tonight. will check in after Wednesday morning.

Sounds like the Wahine are looking good at L/DS with Kahakai and Mendoza. How is Greeley looking? You have not really mentioned her, except for when she tweaked her ankle.
I fully expect Greeley to start. She’s too good all around.
I feel like we’ve been hearing that Long has looked good from the 3 meter attack these past two seasons yet it has never been utilized.
Yeah, agree regarding Long. But this might be the year they use her 3-meter attack as an option.
Ginger Long and Olevao at starting OH would be scary. Both are frustrating to watch. if they start, we are in big trouble.
Long needs to consistently get her serve in and play defense before they would put her in for a back row attack.
i’m probably most excited to see the new players. libero has a lot of players vying for it, likely down to kahakai and mendoza, but it also sounds like guinasso has a lot of volleyball credentials to her name as well.
for long attacking from the 3-meter line is great, but that’s just one aspect of an outside hitter’s duties. the main thing i’d like to know is how is her passing? in fact, how is the passing of all the players challenging for an OH spot? hawaii’s backline will make or break them this year, especially since they’ve got a middle duo that, together, can be a potentially effective offensive outlet.
agreed w/ cubicle… as always, passing is key… yes i know state the obvious :)…
I hope coach does start Greeley w/ Nikki as OH 1 & 2, opp with Koelsch or Passi…or coach runs a 6-2 quick quick quick offiense…
super x cited for the season to begin!
If Nikki has enough reps and ready to go, Olevao and Taylor will start at OH 1-2, and Greeley at RS. If Nikki is not ready Olevao, Greeley starts at OH 1-2 and Passi at RS.
Interesting, Arizona Daily Star said Croson left the team and moved back to Hawaii
1. didn’t say they were looking good at DS/L but they have a lot of depth and Mendoza and Kahakai are the top two.
As for Greeley, everyone is getting reps. I’m not expecting her to start from what I’ve seen and the lineups they’ve had in the scrimmages. She is not in the top 3 for OH for now.
3. agree that we’ve been hearing about Long’s 3-meter attack for a couple of years. Pretty much only seen in practice. Key is her serve and defense. I think her playing sand has helped in those regards. And Shoji said they will be using 3-meter attacks ‘extensively.’
8. a lot is riding on Taylor’s return.
Koelsch WILL NOT be a hitter. She is the reserve setter and that is where she is training. The Opp options are Passi and Long. but, again, in UH’s offense, the LSs hit twice on the left, once on the right, the RS/Opp twice on the right, once on the left.
9. do not see Greeley starting in either scenario you mention, particularly at RS
10. thank you. did not see that about Croson.
I think they need Passi in there just because of her passing skills & digging. Hopefully Long can finally earn a spot in the starting rotation as a hitter.
Don’t think Passi’s passing skills are highly regarded as some people might think. She’s so Danielson or Otineru.
no*
It seems Greeley is not as far along as Nikki Taylor was at this time, last year.
Who are the top 3 OH that are practicing right now, in your opinion, Cindy?
Here we go again we go through this every year just as before when it seemed that Croson wouldnt start and then Taylor wouldnt and then come opening day they do end up Starting , fully expect the same with Greeley.
18. I wouldn’t say that about Greeley. I think she moves better than Taylor did at this time last year. And you have to remember that Taylor sat out her senior year of vb and still was getting back into game mode.
hard to make an assessment since all OHs are getting reps from LS, RS and 3-meter. and they switch sides during scrimmages so they are being set by different setters
Of those currently working out, Manu-Olevao on the LS, Passi on the RS. but they’re also swinging from the opposite pins. Greeley puts up a bigger block than either. Long has had some solid swings from both sides. Maglio hitting well from 3-meters.
