Pete Newell dies
It’s sad to hear about the passing of Pete Newell. He was the originator of the Big Man’s Camp, which was held several times in Hawai‘i.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3709014
Riley Wallace described Newell as an “absolute gentleman.”
They met when Wallace was coaching at UH. Newell addressed the team every year.
“You had to earn his respect, but once you had it, you had it for life,” Wallace said.
Newell spoke highly of Wallace. Because of that, Bob Knight and Wallace became friends.
Newell worked closely with Merv Lopes, who helped run the Big Man’s Camps in Hawai‘i. Jarinn Akana’s association with Newell helped Akana earn a coaching job in the NBA.

In UH time, today is back to being today.
The Warriors were supposed to have a Tuesday schedule today, but instead they had what coach Mack described as a “half-Tuesday.”
The players were “introduced” to the next opponent, Idaho — given bios, tendencies — but did not practice on the field. Instead, they ran sprints. Because it had rained, Mack said he did not want to “tear up the field” by having a regular practice.
The Warriors will go in pads tomorrow.

For the past several months, we’ve heard that if Brent Guy got fired at Utah State, John L. Smith would be the leading candidate as the successor. Well, Guy is now out …

Happy belated birthday to Diana.

Deepest sympathy to the family of Luke Nishikawa, a wonderful guy who died Saturday night in Angwin, Calif. He was 22. In his spare time, the Honolulu resident led a campus outreach program called Homeless Ministries.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Amazing that ST is up and posting this early. Hopefully he will drop of his son to school on time and make it to practice
Condolences to the Nishikawa family
Since when did I have a run named after me??
Get ready for battle Warriors!
Yes, deepest condolences to the Nishikawa family. He was very young. Was he ill?
Top 5. Good Morning Tsaikos. Hope everyone has a good week.
Stertch,
Does your run include drinking from green bottles and shots of CR?
Even with Idaho and Wazzu coming the next two weeks, I hope the Warriors are prepared and don’t underestimate them.
dj – I hope the run doesn’t include green bottles and CR shots, for the football team’s sake. I want them to be on top of their game this coming 3 weeks.
top 10!
top 10
Our condolences to the Nishikawa family, so young.
Happy Belated Birthday to Diana (Kekoa’s better half)!!
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Prayers for the Nishikawa family.
Have a great day, all!
oh?
HAUOLI LAHANAU, DIANA!
btw- my 41st class reunion is being planned for October, 2009 in the Phx. area. Anyone know where I can find the 2009 football schedule?
Mahalo!
good morning Tsaikos!
my condolences to the Nishikawa ohana.
HappY Birthday, Diana. 🙂
Liz – Oct is when the WAC conference games are scheduled and that is not released until sometime next year.
ok. thx, Stretch.
I hope that the Seattle Seahawks play a home game the same weekend that UH plays WSU. Might as well check them out since I am there anyway.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Condolences to Luke Nishikawa’s ‘ohana.
Great Morning All!
Condolences to the Nishikawa Ohana.
Happy belated birthday, Diana!!!
“Stretch Run”?
Isn’t that when everybody has to move their cars so Stretch can get his truck out to go buy more beer?
Belated Happy Birthday to Diana! 🙂
Thanks for posting about Luke, Stephen. He was one of my close friends from home. I grieve about the loss and also pray for his family. I’m glad you recognized him on your blog. -Noelle
Deepest sympathy to Luke’s family.
Was he attending PUC in Angwin? I have cousins that go there I’m sure they knew him, it’s a very close-knit college.
My condolences to the Nishikawa family.
our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the nishikawa family.
happy birthday diana!
diana….make sure you have your husband make you some turkey tails this saturday.
How ’bout them Cowboys?
jm2375…i can’t ever lose faith in them!
ummmm……
now that’s stretching it a bit don’t you think?
al – Stretch & Run should NOT be in the same sentence
My condolences to the Nishikawa family.
Riley Wallace on 1500 AM. Wow, he’s back in Vegas already. It would have been cool to have him stay for the 11 PM game tonight. 😀
so bball struggles…..new faces and all.
why try a big lineup?
flemings to 2 guard.
balocka at center
amis at the 4
adams the 3 fwd
nitoto for now at the point.
we lack outside shooting. i could see flemings and adams doing some damage with a two man game. balocka picking up the garbage. amis focusing on defense and ten footers.
the key may be, if and when thompson gets back to playing shape. i like nitoto’s effort but he has a ways to go. gotta remove the headlights.
…nuff said
at your age should be able to run still.
then your stretching wouldn’t be limited to stretching to reach the brown bottle.
http://www.puc.edu/news/archives/2008/students-in-tragic-car-accident
Four Pacific Union College (PUC) students died in a vehicle accident on Deer Park Road late Saturday night. The Napa County Sheriff’s Department identified the victims as Boaz Pak, 20, Luke Nishikawa, 22, Simon Son, 19, and Chong Shin, 20.
Just talked to Ronnie.
They are back home and the boys don’t have school. Lucky for them. Ian’s school was an evacuation center.
She at least has her priorities straight and remembered to grab the boys’ mini helmets and her Sugar Bowl ticket (once in a lifetime) before evacuating! True Warrior fan!
I agree with ‘djmitcho’ –hope they don’t underestimate the upcoming opponents. Idaho was competitive in the first half against Boise State, only to have BS get untracked in the 2nd . I don’t think there’s too much of a chance that the team will be complacent since Coach Mack is at the helm, though. Still, I think we’ve all learned not to take too much for granted this season. Is there a chance we’ll see Blaze Soares in there?? Also, did Paipai Falemalu redshirt this year?? Just wondering.
Any word as to when the WSU/UH game next year will be “officially” announced to be played in Seattle?
paipai is redshirting this year.
J – thanks for that article. Very tragic news. Condolences to the Pak, Nishikawa, Son, and Shin families.
Wazzou plays in Seattle?
Hey Stretch…
No problem. Driven up and down that hill countless times…
Aloha, gang! Hi, ST! Happy Monday!
Stretch gave me a guilt trip, so I hurried here. I would have come anyway … but the kick in the pants made me run faster.
Whoa Esme is in the Hale…. nice to have you here.
Stretch, that’s not what you said earlier.
😆
Hmm. We seem to be posting about 20 minutes in the future again.
Rob25, thanks for the update on Ronnie. I’m sure she knows we’re thinking of her and her family, but please remind her if you talk to her again.
Esme is on a roll. I think she is making up for lost time AND for the future.
Condolences to all the bereaved families. Luke sounds like he was such a good person.
whew,
is it Monday….seemed to have lost a few brain cells recently….imagine that.
SteveM., whew, what a night, oh my………….so good to see everyone, been too long.
Esme,
howzit, long long time no see….hope all is well with you and yours…..don’t let Stretch make you feel guilty….you can do that on your own.
Esme is nimble. A kick in the pants would not knock her over.
…However, the legal team advises us to say: The Warrior Beat does not support kicking Esme in the pants as an experiment of her agility.
*snorrrrt*
Yeah, whatever, ST. Thanks for the reverse psychology thing. Now EVERYONE will be aiming their boots at my behind today.
*runs away … nimbly*
mornin tsaikos,
condolences to the nishikawa family. too young, too soon =(.
how many of you are heading to the bball game tonight?
Condolensces to the Nishikawa family.
So when will the new turf be finished?
With John L. Smith coaching, how much will USU be willing to pay to get out of their obligation to play in Hawaii?
Oh wait…they’re in conference! No escaping now, John L….
heheheh
iwwthm,
Hmmm….late start time; high probability of rain; ESPN coverage; less than spectacular start….
….not looking good.
if you never know, basketball is played INSIDE the Stan Sherrif Center
Happy belated birthday to Diana, the queen of the Kekoa household! Hope the day was great!
Heartfelt condolences to the Nishikawa family…
Diana, happy belated birthday wishes from the A-House family and many, many, more to come!!!
I would LOVE to have John L Smith come over and coach against Hawaii again!! If he gets the job, in his first year coaching and he has to come here. I can anticipate a typical warm aloha welcome for him.
Stretch,
But no mo’ covered roads from here to there!
(But what do I know? I’m jus one babooze!)
Maybe if I could have a “half-Tuesday” tomorrow, I’d reconsider going tonight.
d1 – no tell me you pulling one DPK. Unless you have one convertible and babooze enough to keep the top down, you should stay dry while driving to the arena.
Da hoops game starts at 1am my time, I don’t know if I will stay up to watch it. Maybe the first half.
Good morning everyone!
Almost lunch time for me.
Condolences to the Luke Nishikawa family.
…and a belated
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DIANA !!!
Best trump partner I’ve had in a long time! 🙂
iwonder – I will be there with my mom and Sleez. I think that sj, myki and mei ling will be there also. Not sure who else.
Hawaii Bowl 2008 ticket purchasing notes:
I will never rely on the Best Seats Available button. It would have given me seats in the upper orange near the center. By clicking on the stadium section, I was able to secure blue first row MM (30 yd line) a few weeks ago. What I regret most is NOT checking the brown middle sideline area. Do you folks realize that just a few minutes ago I checked, and tickets like these are still available? 3(brown) MM row 1 seats 5-6. I know it’s like I’m expecting UH to beat Idaho and Wazzu, but I didn’t want to wait for the actual qualification like in previous years, and ending up with seats on the 10 yd line in the red. BTW, during that time of the day, would the sun hit the brown section on the afternoon sun side?
Deepest sympathy to the Luke Nishikawa family.
22 is too young indeed. Prayers to the Nishikawa Ohana.
Chawan,
What is that chant your area does when the other team calls a time out? I heard it on Friday and last night and the only thing I could make out was the end of it where everyone yells “SIT DOWN”.
Me and my friends laughed our a$$es off at that. That was awesome indeed.
BTW… Right now I’m feeling 80% confident I will venture out to Manoa in the late hours of a worknight… We shall see how the day goes for me.
Happy belated birthday, Diana!
I will be there tonight. I am done with my class today, and now I’m spending the rest of my day here at UH, catching up on homework that I procrastinated on. 🙂
John L Smith, John L Smith – why should that name ring bells?
ah, is he the CRY BABY former coach of a Big 10 team who cried zebra foul after losing in Aloha Stadium?
just like the former Wyoming coach who begged not to play Hawaii because of travel and students being away from the classroom so long?
but, alas, both came and went home “crying”.
One thing the Big 10 will be known for is the “cry baby coaches” who lose in Hawaii and go home to tell only their side of the story on why they lost and their supporters, fans, school officials, and other conference schools “eat that up”.
what’s even more sad is that the WAC agreed to allow only Big 10 refs to officiate any game in Aloha Stadium for any Big 10 school. I hope Benson got more b-lls to stand up to that kind of bullsh-t!!!! But, then again, maybe that’s why he was not invited to join the MWC when they broke away. If he was and turned them down, then I sincerely apologize for my comment.
let’s hope that the Big East, ACC, and SEC Athletic Directors and coaches will agree to play the Warriors in Hawaii just to prove that they can be better than the Big 10.
Pulling a what, Stretch??!!
Jeez, that’s what I get for playing around in here??!!
My name now is synonymous with being a flake?
How am I supposed to feel about that?
Thanks buddy.
In case anyone was wondering about the ties, the Nishikawas are family friends. Luke hangs out with my daughters. Very nice guy. His father is a pastor in Manoa.
By the way, I’m not taking sides in any spats, so play nicely on the blog. Yes, DPK, I know that was you calling.
It’s too early to tell if Roderick Flemmings will be another Leon Wright-Jackson.
Scratching head about Redskins offense…
I’ll let Davone say it for me…
Twitter Watch:
Davone_Bess: Fins Win! Skins Lose! I believe whenever they put Colt in, they will be very surprised. We all just want a chance…. 41 minutes ago
🙄
DPK – I apoligize if I hurt your feelings.
I hope that everyone here does not take it seriously that DPK is a flake.
Too bad for Brent Guy. Utah State has made some progress, but evidently not enough. It is a tough thing to turn a program around, especially at a school that doesn’t have many resources or a marquee conference or history to help recruiting.
Whoever takes on the UDub disaster is going to at least have resources, history, and conference to assist them. It just goes to show what a remarkable job JJ did at UH. He had some stars align for him too.
SMU is proving a different story, despite a team with a proud history and money along with the fertile recruiting grounds of Texas. Looks almost certain that SMU will finish the season without a FBS win. Of SMU’s 10 losses 4 were by a touchdown or less and none were within a field goal. That’s pretty rough.
I watched the 2nd half of the Idaho – BSU game. They really aren’t very good. I thought that the difference between them and Utah State was that Utah State has some athletes who have game-changing potential.
Idaho beat NMSU and FCS team Idaho State. San Jose State was the only team that beat them who wasn’t able to score at least 42 points. The 42 points was by Utah State. San Diego State’s ONLY win of the season was when they ran up 45 points on Idaho.
Too bad Idaho doesn’t play Washington State this year, which they typically do, as it might have been their best shot at winning in the series.
So the next two weeks Hawaii plays teams with one FBS win between them. Let’s hope the guys can keep up the intensity. We saw at Utah State what can happen when the team loses focus.
IBulla — I don’t recall losing brain cells but I lost half a day somewhere…and when your bride stood next to me I couldn’t help but start dancing too–good thing the crowd was thinning by then, since people tell me they would rather hear me sing than dance 😐
Next time we get Lyn, Pam and Russ together in the same karaoke room, NO CAMERAS– for real!
So, there was no Blaze today, which means, well, no Blaze.
ST- whassup with Kenny Estes???
maybe bruddah blaze should just not worry about trying to get ready for 2008 already. no need push for just a couple games, get ready for springball. jmho.
in addition to da warriors, some very very interesting games this weekend. da utes and cougs, kaepernick against boise, and of course, TT and OU
Stretch,
I’m sorry, it’s not you. I have a lot on my mind lately.
The mother of my kids (my ex) lost her battle with cancer last month, and as much as I try not to let it affect me, it has. That’s part of the reason why you haven’t seen me at a lot of Tsaiko functions lately. This situation has been ongoing for a few months, and my youngest son was caring for her right til the end, and had to watch her fade away. He’s coming out here soon because he needs to be with me. So if I seem like a flake, you’re probably right, but honestly, I just haven’t felt terribly social lately
Otherwise you, the rest of the Tsaikos and the Warrior Beat have been the biggest source of laughs for me a lot of times, and a lot of days, coming on the blog and getting dogged and dogging back and laughing about it has been great therapy. I apologize for not being able to roll with it today, I’m just not myself some days.
I hope you understand. You’re a good guy and I am proud to call you a friend.
DPK: I’m sorry to hear she passed away, I remember you mentioned her before, and some of us prayed for her back then. My condolences and prayers to you and your children.
Sad to hear that Pete Newell passed too.
DPK- take yer time… come hang when you’re ready.
((((HUGS))))
Kid — no problem on the blog–those that know you, well, know you and what you mean. Unless like homey, it is you pretending to be you… 😆
Will your son be moving here or just visiting?
DPK – Sorry to hear about your loss. I hope that you are able to stay strong for your son and give him the support that he needs.
Thanks Jason,
And I thank all of the many friends here prayed for her. She got better for a while and then it came raging back. I debated whether or not to share the situation on the blog, and couldn’t bring myself to do so until today. You guys are like family, and I guess I shouldn’t be afraid to lean on you all sometimes.
Liz:
Kenny Estes is redshirting this season.
He should have redshirted last season, but as you might recall, they decided to activate him for the final couple of games.
It also appears that Jeramy Bryant will seek a medical redshirt for this season.
Stretch,
We’ve both been working at it, and are much better, thanks.
Steve,
It’s just an extended visit for now. He’ll be here for at least six weeks.
ST- thanks re Kenny.
Prayers for the Newell ohana.
A melancholy day on the WB today.
Sorry for your loss, DPK.
Never recall hearing a bad thing about Pete Newell.
It would be nice to end the day with a Bball “W” but in the meantime, a Princess video might be nice. (hint hint)
Good afternoon gangees!
Condolences to DPK and his ohana and the Newell & Nishikawa families.
To all those headed to the bball game tonight – have fun and cheer loud! I’ll be with you in spirit, at least for the 1st half. After that, I might be snoring. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…. Please be careful out on the roads tonight.
OK back to work. bbl.
Oh yeah, Happy Belated Birthday to Kekoa’s much better half, Diana. Da guy better have treated you *really* well, or I will sic Homey’s poodles on him!
What exactly happened to Jeramy Bryant? He looked like a good player during camp.
happy bday to diana 🙂
dpk, you and your ohana are in my prayers, this too shall pass….
steveM., i have a really funny story about after saturday night’s escapades, and i’ll share with the crew
lyn and i are driving down kuhio ave., and right in front of the Mirmar Hotel, lyn says, ‘honey, pull up, i think i just saw that hooker’s butt,’. so i move up but now the hooker is sitting between 2 military guys….and she makes eye contact with me, so the hooker smiles and says to lyn and I, ‘don’t worry, i do couples too!’
i was in shock, and as i pulled away, my favorite bomber lynn says, ‘what did she say? i wish i was more coherent, i’d like to have a conversation with her…’
that was funny, oh well, such is the antics of the post Genji crowd
and yes, mrs bulla did have some sore muscles from her Genji-robics. haha
Condolences for all
Luke Nishikawa and his gang at PUC…lots of aloha for his family…
Coach Newell’s ohana, many thanks for your presence in Hawaii nei and helping our keikis out…
DPK and his son, keep the faith and stay strong…the tsaikos will help lift you up whenever you need it
DPK,
I’ll pray for you and your entire family. God bless.
kazz,
when an opposing team member fouls out, we chant:
“ALOHA O’E….
ALOHA O’E…
SIT DOWN!!!!!”
it started who knows when, but the band kept it going all these years. and then i think we/they were told not to yell it, but now that we’re just fans, they can’t tell us that.
DPK – I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. Please know that you are in my prayers.
I’m so glad that you were able to come join us a couple of weekends ago at Bay View. It was nice to see you and Sweety, especially in light of all that you have been dealing with.
OK, I am seriously thinking about going tonight, but I don’t want to sit by myself. When I get off work, I am going to sleep and if I get up in time, I will be at the game and looking for a Tsaiko to cheer with. This is really going to mess with my body clock, but hey, that’s why we’re dedicated fans…Tsaikos!
My condolensces DPK.
Rob25 look for stretch tonight….
Howzit Everybody,
Condolences to the Newell and Nishikawa family. May the grace of god be with you.
DPK one day at a time my friend. No worries brah we all here for you when ready. Take care
One more thing,
Happy birthday Aunty Dianna
DPK:
A-House family send our deepest sympathy for your loss.
Happy birthday Dianna or Diana! Kekoa must be planning a big bash for you, he has been on the quiet side on the today….unless he is busy cleaning up jm2375 mess and to habut to post….
DPK – Please take care of yourself.
good day tsai-ko kane’s and wahine’s

hello to esme even tho I know she whoooooooshed already
check back in lattas.
Ralph – me? make a mess? I think NOT!!! grrrrr. 😀 🙄 😈
Browns vs Bills on Monday night….Brady Quinn threw only 1 pass beyond ten yards last week out of 22 passes…they say its a confidence builder to limit his progressions to 2 receivers-they should have drafted Colt, faster learning curve…
DPK .. maybe we should grab a couple of gloves and just go play some catch..I can teach you the new SLIDER I just learned how to throw..always works for me
Beautiful… simply beautiful. Too bad gotta wait until someone gets fouled out, but it must be sooooooooooo worth it.
So funny. KEEP DOING IT, lemme see if I can get others around me to do so also. Also, since tonight looks like a sparse crowd (hope not) I’ll try to get me and my friends to sit either near the band or at least behind the UH bench.
DPK, if it helps, I’ve never met you and have no idea who you are, but you’re one of my favorite bloggers on this site. You always make me laugh, like Stephen Tsai. Hope you navigate through these rough waters as soon as possible.
Anyways, people always say I’m a flake as well. Of course, as for me, they are right.
Aloha.
Condolences and prayers to DPK and his family, and to the Newell and Nishikawa families.
It is always tragic to lose a family member.
One day at a time. One day at a time.
Finally got yesterday’s paper delivered today. Yep, all the news that is fit to print one day later.
Glad to hear Ronnie and her boys are safe and sound back at home. Thank goodness!
Brady Quinn?
Is dat da braddah who’s ole’ lady wen disapeah from her seat aftah each draft pick kept passing him by?
Da Punchbowl Kid,
Our deepest sympathy to you and your ohana on your loss.
Our condolences to the NIshikawa and Newell families.
Diana,
Happy birthday and many more to come!
DPK…
Hey … sorry braddah for your deep loss. Although she was your ex-wife, I know she played a very special part in your life and your kids lives and that she always resided in her own part of your heart. Sometimes it helps to climb a hill somewhere or go someplace private and have a long conversation with the departed. Talk… wait to hear the response in your hear, not your head.. and ask all the questions you need to ask.. say, all you have always wanted to say, have a good cry, and know it hurts because you loved. Loving makes you a special human being. Being loved makes her a very special human, too.
Take care DPK. Watch your diet as even the slightest depression can wreck havoc on your auto-immune system. Get flu shots if you can.
So, is the Stretch Run a seated event on a padded or unpadded chair?
If John L. Smith gets the Utah State HC job, I hope he doesn’t insist on using Big 10 Conference referees…
Mrs. Kekoa . . .
Happy birthday to you
Hope Kekoa remembered too
If he did not remember
Use a slippah or two!
Many, many more happy days to you!!!
Maybe it would be a good idea for the Warriors to insist on using Big 10 officials when playing at USU.
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Sup Gang..
Dang Coach Newell passed away… I remember when I was younger I would try and sneak into the gym to watch the Big Man’s Camp. Remember seeing Shaq, Alonzo Mourning, Jermaine O’neal, Larry Johnson…those guys looked like giants up close! R.I.P. Coach
Happy Birthday Aunty D…
DPK,
Sorry for your loss, hope your kids are doing okay. Losing a mom is always hard to cope with. Prayers to you and the ohana…
Aunty Ronnie,
How’s everything with you and the boys? I was meaning to give you a ring and see if you was alright when I heard the fires started heading towards Yorba Linda, but my cell was AFU and wouldn’t call out. Anyway, good thing you posted on the blog that everything was alright and you crack me up with the stuffs you took. Anyway, if you guys ever need a place for stay I get two extra rooms in my hale…
Good to hear that Kenny Estes is redshirting this year. We’ll need him with the loss of our seniors in the secondary.
Are they possibly looking at him as a kicker as well? I remember someone saying he was a pretty good soccer player in hs.
I won’t be getting my Hawai’i Bowl tickets until UH becomes eligible. Don’t wanna jinx them.
Hey DPK,
Deepest sympathy to you and your family especially the kids. My nephews lost their mother (my sister) a couple years ago. Its always hard to cope with the loss of someone but even harder when children are involved.
Jason,
Howzit my bruddah…about Parghalava… My perception of Lasha isn’t premature, I’ve been playing basketball over 20 years and know what I see. I don’t like to compare Lasha to Matt. They both play erratic and hustle but Gibson was smarter with the ball, could create his own shot and played solid defense. I haven’t seen any of that from Lasha. His handle is suspect, decision making is awful, defense is horrendous. He’s more of a spot up shooter and needs to come off screens and move around to get open looks. Not saying he won’t develop into something later on but I don’t see it happening. Don’t get me wrong I love a player who hustles but running around without focus will lead you to la-la land, which is where he seems to be playing as of late. Lasha to me is not a good ball-handler or defender and like I said should be moving all over the court coming off screens and pick and rolls so he can score. He obviously is the only decent outside shooter we have on the team from what I’ve seen. Everyone else is more slash to the basket type players. Our offense needs to change though if we are to get the best out of our players. They seem so lost and the offense is so stagnant. I think they should try and push the ball and play a more transition style of game. Our half-court flex/motion offense does not suit the abilities of our players IMO…
Kay back to Football…
So we playing the Potatoe guys this week huh…
Kama Bailey is there primary PR/KR right? Too bad for him when he gets lit up this weekend by our special teams! Nothing against Kama, cause he’ll be dangerous for the Vandals in a couple years but playing against the home team, sorry bruddah you going get pounded! Nice though to see another Hawaii product doing well in college elsewhere. Kama supposedly leads the Vandals in all purpose yardage this year as a freshman!
Pomai,
So are we taking scores yet for this weeks game???
Warrior Potatoe Poundahz – 41 Mashed Potatoes – 17
J-Dog- I hope Kenny will have a chance to move into his potential next year. He is a do it all” player and pretty much did it all in high school. He has great legs- kicking and running- and was on the state champ relay team and a very good soccer player. Plus a great wessai personality.
Trent Edwards is a terrible qb for the Bills…..he is a year ahead of colt but to pass on colt to expect Edwards to shine is difficult to understand..3 interceptions in the first qtr alone and he isn’t that accurate with poor timing…
Pauoa Boy: I think you’re definitely right about the lack of outside shooting. In fact, Riley Wallace said so this morning on the radio. But I’m going to be a little more patient on Parghalava. If he doesn’t pan out, then he doesn’t pan out. But I’m seeing flashes of ability out of him. If he just slows down and plays at 100% speed instead of 1000%, I think we might get a better idea of what he can bring to the team. Right now, though, I’m not sure where his head is. Maybe it’s the turmoil back home, maybe it’s overcompensating for the increased speed of the game, IDK.
Time for me to take a nap before heading off to the game tonight. See some of you guys later.
Jason,
Lasha Parghalava reminds me of Predrag Savovic in some ways, but Parghalava has been a turnover machine in the first two games. If he settles down and has room to take those threes he’ll be averaging 20 points a game. However he has the potential to create many turnovers. Parghalava and Nitoto are the two most valuable defenders in one on one situations.
You’re right, Parghalava’s effort is there and he brings that Matt Gibson-type intensity to the game, but obviously he’s not as polished as Gibson just yet and watching him attempt to keep the flex motion under control has looked like watching a lit match being in charge of dynamite.
So far my favorite, Petras Balocka has been pretty solid and he is looking stronger on the ball with each passing game.
Bill Amis just needs to get over the hump that some great players experience some time in their careers.
Brandon Adams was disappointing on Friday but MUCH better last night. Looks like he is still trying to find his “hands” right now.
As for point guard, I still think a healthy Hiram Thompson would have the edge over Nitoto and once Thompson does get back to 100 percent, we’ll start seeing that happen.
I hope that they got a chance to work on penetrating the zone defense today as I’m sure Idaho State will employ this from the tip off. I’m not too worried about our chances against a man to man defense. We have the talent to do so. However if we are able to work well against Idaho State’s zone defense, I expect them to ditch it and then go to man in which Flemmings will have a lot of attention paid to him in the form of double teams and it could lead to him getting most of his points from the freethrow line like on Friday night.
That was my first concern about Flemmings. I was worried that a lot of teams would focus a lot on him and he’ll be relegated to getting his points from the line, but I think there were some flashes last night of the rest of the team being able to assist in getting Flemmingns some seperation in order for him to do as much damage as possible.
Maybe I should just stay in the office until 10 and then just head to Manoa?
Then again I do not have a green shirt on so I will have to change. I should have prepared.
BTW…. speaking of green shirts.
I wore my green “BOWS BFOR H*S” shirt last night and it attracted the attention of our very own punter Tim Grasso. He thought it was “bada$$”.
Grasso’s a cool guy.
It is 6 pm, and outside of 15 minutes for lunch, I’ve been staying here in Hamilton Library for …oh, over six hours. I’m going crazy here. 😛
Jason – why not head down to Eastside Grill to watch some of the other bball games? Is Manoa Gardens not open?
DPK – Heart felt condolences to you and your children. I just said a prayer for you and your family.
Also I’d like to extend my condolences to the Newell & Nishikawa families.
I’ve been catching up on homework. I’m such a slacker. I’m turning into Stretch … 😯
hey now, just because you thought I was going take a nap….
Jason — no worry. You not turning into Stretch if you spend six hours in a library and only 15 minutes for lunch… 🙂
One semester I used to spend 6 hours on “lunch” and then 15 minutes in the library.
Kazz go to the game and buy a green shirt and support UH athletics.lol
Jason,
If I were there trying to study I would be asleep in no time. Of course since I’m trying to take a nap I’m wide awake!
See you in a few hours.
DPK,
Sorry to hear about your ‘ohana’s loss. Prayers out for you and your family. Hello to Sweety, too, & (((HUGS))) to all.
Condolences to Pete Newell’s family. I didn’t know he coached at USF; way before my time.
I like the Coach Mack show. Ke’ala Watson is very articulate.
Rob25, IDKWTHM,
If either of you need a ticket tonight, shoot me an email soon. ST left the tickets at the box office for me. Otherwise, they go to anyone I meet there who needs a ticket.
Yes, I did leave Mei LIng two tickets.
Ralph,
Oh, I got my green shirt ready for tonight! As for trying to take a nap before hand…
I will probably leave the office at 8 and then get home in 20 mins. I will avoid trying to take a nap as I am usually WIDE awake afterwards and then unable to get back to sleep again for a real long time.
I need to be real tired to get some decent sleep and I am usually drained after any UH game. (Moreso if we lose) So I should be ok for tomorrow with the help of my 5 HR Energy Friend… and about two of his buddies as well. Coffee doesn’t do anything to me.
Was FloridaTed going to be incommunicado this week? The link on my name is a pic of Travis LaBoy signing the visor he won.
Shoots! that link won’t work since you have to sign into Facebook…ok, fogedaboutit…
Glad to hear Ronnie & family are ok, and back home.
Hope the ‘Bows do better tonight. When I was living on the mainland, I would stay up to watch UH whenever they were on tv. Hard to be quiet at 1 am when everyone else was sleeping in the house.
GO ‘BOWS!!!
GO WARRIORS!!!
Yeah, Bows in HD. 4AM. Thanks Almighty for the DVR.
Utah State: Good, I was starting to have some respect for them.
my condolences to the Nishikawas’, Newells’ and DPK. Times like this is very hard on your family and I just want to say, i truly understand your losses. my best to all of you.
Aloha Ka Kou to all the Tsaiko friends of my husband Kekoa. Your best wishes were well received. It was very nice of you Mr. Tsai for acknowledging my birthday and thank you for not revealing my age.
One thing for sure, The fountain of youth is NOT located on my hubby’s beloved ceded lands. He did make up for that untruth by including Lobster on the menu several times over this past weekend.
Mahalo,
Diana
To my good friend DPK and his lovely wife Sweetie I pass on my condolences for your family’s recent loss.
Malama Pono,

I am here in the Stan Sheriff Center. I want to go to bed. 😀
jm2375: Thanks for the idea I went to Eastside Grill and had a wonderful chicken pasta dish for dinner.
Somber day, today. My condolences to all who’s lost a loved one.
I loved getting to eat dinner (buffet!) on the deck of the USS Midway today…what perfect weather for that setting. Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell gave a great speech during lunch, I was very impressed with him. MILCOM was very good today…but 13+ hours in a full suit was way too much for me.
The SEC’s allegations about Mark Cuban and insider trading sure look convincing.
Free play link time. Please ignore my next 5 posts if you do not want the off-topic stuff.

Wrong blog maybe…for these predictions…
Punahou Division 1 Football Champs
They’ve got the talent and they seem to be coming together at the right time.
Lahainaluna Division 2 Football Champs
They’ve got speed, strength, and discipline.
It will cost $21 million to repair the Large Hadron Collider, which has to be shut down for 8.5 months for repairs. A single poorly soldered connection caused the problem!

Obama will apparently have to give up his Blackberry when he becomes President. Interesting that he plans to be the first President with a laptop computer…I thought that others would have had one already.
56-year-old North Carolina woman was told to stay away from a community center because they didn’t like the way she dirty danced. The town agreed to pay her $275,000 to not dance there!
Just finished reading Ferd’s 17th column and the only thing I have got to say to the Warriors is do not, I say again do not believe a word that he has written, these two teams coming in this week and next are more dangerous that you can ever imagine, they are like rats that are backed into a corner, they are going to be fighting tooth an nail to beat you, to wipe out your chances to go to a bowl game, they have nothing to lose but everything to gain. Keep your focus on the game in front of you and don’t look past it. You have seen it before BSU/UTAH don’t let it happen again. FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS

Kazz is here! And so is the best baton twirler in the world. 😀
And chawan_cut has arrived as well.
You can tell, I’m tired and bored.
Interesting tidbit: the band members are in “sleep clothes.”
just curious….?
who won the score contest last two games?
er, were there any prizes?
just wondering aloud?
hahahaha.
Have fun at the game, folks!
MeiLing- Ted is offline for a few days as he does his visiting.
Anyone interested in sitting together for the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl?
I would like to make plane reservations while they are still cheap.
SSC must be empty to be able to locate Kazz so easily
Jason – you’re welcome. Have fun @ the game. Hope you can stay awake.:D
Kazz is five seats away from me. 😀
And I think that’s myki in her usual seat. And now sj-macro has joined her.
It seems like as soon bess drops a couple of passes, all hell breaks loose. Its a good thing he caught that pass that help set up the winning field goal.Shows how much trust and faith the QB has in bess.Bess return game is ok.I think he fumble once. Not too shure.Keep up the good work bess.Showem how its done.
I would like to see chad owens back hopefully soon.Arena, NFL anyone just play football.

To the families who lost loved ones in the car accident…prayers for your consolement and strength, and shared tears for your loss.
Deepest condolences to DPK and especially your son, may mama rest in peace.
Birthday wishes to Ms. Diana, hope to meet you and Kekoa someday.
Billy V is having us practice our rally towel twirling. 😯
Poor Idaho State, I think they have ten boosters here. That includes the one dude in an orange Boise State shirt.
DPK
As you’ve seen…your Tsaiko Family is always here for you. “Be still sad heart and cease repining. Behind the clouds is the sun still shining…” Take care of yourself and do what you must.
John L Smith????
Is this the I don’t want to play at Hawaii guy???
The coach who doesn’t like WAC refs????
Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaa…………….
USU going to dump Brent for this guy???
Hey jason, are you at the uh bb game?
So, did ESPN bring in their own broadcast team? Did we get the bottom of the barrel? 🙁
There are Jim and Traci Donovan behind the other basket. At least, I thought that was Traci. She disappeared. 😛
St Mary’s is tooling Fresno State, they belong to the same conference as San Francisco..oops, the WAC taken to the wood shed by the West Coast Conference in preseason…
1surfah: Yep.
Pau for today. See you tomorrow (at halftime?) …
St Mary’s gym is not much bigger than a high school gym
Sorry, it’s Tracy, not Traci.
I’m out.
eh jason, you supposed to be taking a head count of the rainbow dancers. whatsamatta you?
the boy just left for the game.
I wonder if the game will start on time. ESPN is showing the Fresno St. Mary’s game and there is still 4:10 left.
aha!! which names espn broadcast team is demolishing
surfah – at least it’s not the fb team with all the polynesian names. only got the eastern european names. can’t imagine how they can mangle names like Lutu and Nitoto. 🙄

jm
lol!!! thats true. will see what happens.
ok here we go.lets go bows!!
its amis!not anus.
On SportsHawaii, someone posted that the Head Coach for New Mexico (MWC – not WAC) just quit. The Qback that was committed to go there was rumored to want to come to Hawaii, instead. Anyone remember who that was?
ahhh turnovers.
shutter from Puna hoe.
maybe Q.B from punahou.
sheesh. same old, same old. no defense of the 3, turnovers, bad passes, bad shot selection. arrrrrgh!
He was on leahy an this morning(QB for puns). He gave a verbal to nm.
C’mon Jr. This ain’t the playground!!
Hmm.. maybe we should forget about that New Mexico QB and take a look at Cunningham… here.
http://gcdailyworld.com/story/1478758.html
good cap!
ahhh good steal.just dunkm!
1surfah…
ah.. well.. a local QB with height and talent would always be welcomed. Although the way the fans boo’ed Timmy, I wouldn’t want to see that repeated on any local QB, eh?
OK time for bed. Gotta be alert tomorrow. Got 3 hr show and tell by the execs and then, my performance review.
See ya guys tomorrow. I’ll try to watch the game till I drift off to la-la land.
Go Bows!
idaho is doin good with are turnovers!
aloha jm.mih yah thats true.its really bad when they boo any body from UH team.hopefully are QBs that we got know got thick skin because theres a good chance of booing.
free throws can help.
balloooooooska!!!
sounds like were in a different country.
Been a while.
Just being the insomniac that I can be on work nights. After channel-surfing for a bit I was hoping to land on Sportscenter. Found Hawaii basketball instead. Nice.
looks like there’s who chose bed instead of the Stan Sherriff.

A win’s a win’s a win. Overall it didn’t look pretty but we’ll take it for the first victory of the season.
Chawan_cut, you stay on TV cheering during the OT session!
Bwahahaha!!!!!
Geez, what a day. I didn’t know Luke, but all of my nieces’ friends are great people. As you might have read in today’s story, Luke and his group spent the previous day feeding the homeless in SF.
DPK, all good thoughts to you and your family. Your son must have gone through a lot these last few months, but I’m sure that once the grief subsides he’ll value the time he got to spend with his mother. Not everyone gets to give back to their parents for their love and care.
Condolences to Pete Newell’s family a friends. Had the pleasure of eating lunch with him many years ago after one his Big Man Camps. Great basketball brain and a real gentleman.
Happier days on the way…
I don’t know if it was just me, but it’s funny how the players seemed to be a tad sluggish yet the refs appeared to be in mid-season form. 🙄
Anyways, it’s 5am here. Off to sleep.
Before I sign off, condolences to Luke’s family, the Newells, and DPK and family on their losses. I know these are hard to endure. Just take things one day at a time.
Whoooooooosh!
Great game! Also in attendance was Rob25. Sorry if I missed anyone else.
Good night!
yay.
nite.
After the win this morning it is going to certainly be a fine morning!!!
Pomai . . .
38 – 28 Warriors, of course!
Thanks much.
Funny Audi commercial with the naked tree. HA!
Whoo-hoo!!! Target is cutting their prices to match Wal-Mart.
I like Target much more than Wally World.
When is Hawai’i’s Target scheduled to open?
As if the US does not have enough problems. You can now order Domino’s pizza through your TiVo.
I wonder who or what answers the door?
To da big, DPK..
I’ve personally known too many people who have succumed?, to cancer, including my own mother whom I nursed until her death, so I don’t envy no body’s grief including yours my friend. Be well and live for the deceased so you can convey to others their goodness, and preserve their memories. KEEP WELL YOUR HEART MY FRIEND.
Good morning to all! I’m still enjoying this mornings terrific win by the BB team in OT.
Jason you missed Mei ling, Stretch and Sleeaz. I didn’t see Mama Stretch. sj is still asleep so I guess we’re not going to make FB practice this morning.
Have a great day !
Pomai:

Terrific reading about the Bball teams first “W”! 🙂
Hope my DVR caught it all.
