Pilares is moving, Billy Ray Stutzmann is not

Kealoha Pilares practiced at slotback today.

* * *

Billy Ray Stutzmann disputed an Internet report that claimed he was reneging on his commitment to UH. “That’s false,” he said, adding he will sign with the Warriors.

* * *

Antwan “Tua” Mahaley was kidding, I think, when he suggested he would try out for the men’s volleyball team.
But maybe that isn’t so far-fetched.
At 6 feet 4, with a long reach and a 33-inch vertical jump, Mahaley would make an excellent middle blocker.
He has the form — two-step approach; keen reader of body language — to be a good middle.
Most of all, he would be a good fit.
With Matt “Dragon” Rawson coming off shoulder surgery and Steven Grgas moving to outside hitter, the volleyball Warriors could use another middle.
Just a thought.

* * *

Everybody is a comedian. Antwan “Tua” Mahaley and Elliott Purcell decided to switch uniforms for today’s practice. Here’s Mahaley:

Here’s Purcell:

And I think Purcell is trying to tell me something:

Keala Watson said: “There’s Mouton (second from right) on the futon.”

And here’s Inoke Funaki signing off:

Happy birthday to a wonderful woman, my neighbor Mrs. A-House.

And also a very happy birthday to our special friend, WassupDoc.

From one Libra to another, hope you have a day filled with beauty and balance. Oh, and hope you whoop it up too! Yee Haw!

    ST-

Any reason why Antwan is not being auditioned for a receiver position? He’s a huge solid target that defenders would (insert inappropriate word) to bring down.

I’d love to see him run a crossing pattern from a wide out position, catch a pass and simply annihilate an opponents LB!

Happy birthday to you Mrs A-House, may you enjoy a special day. Another Libra.

  13. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 7, 2008 2:34 am

Happy Birthday, Mrs. A-House – something else we have in common besides boiled peanuts and the 96734 zipcode. DrDoc is two days from now so we’ll be partying at the Call the Coach Show on Wednesday since we always split the dif. Come join us!!

A reminder about the Na Koa luncheons which I assume also includes the Call The Coach show. Bring money or a credit card if you use them because they don’t take checks. Was really looking forward to Coach Mack’s presentation today but only had $9 in cash. Would have stopped off at the bank had I known.

According to K5, they will not be covering the 2007 awards ceremony on Friday except for a few highlights. Does anyone have a digital video camera so that the entire ceremony can be put on a dvd to send to Pomai? If not, then it’ll have to be still photos.

Still waiting for updates on next week’s start of the Ching/Cooke Field construction project.

The Michael Washington story is inspiring – which is why Coach Alan Inaba’s program at Dole Middle School needs our support. All you have to do is drink some HI-5 beverages at home or work and then bring the empties to the T-Gates and put them in or next to our party recycling bin. All proceeds go to his program.

I just dragged my tired carcass into the house from an all day jam session here on the ceded lands. Before I hit the showers, I just had to check the blog. Lo and behold I see the message of the day.

Hail to Mrs. A-House. Hail to the 1st Lady of the Tsaiko Ohana! Hail Yes!

May you have the Happiest of Birthdays Mrs. *A*

All the Libra’s in the house send their best regards to you!

(I had some cocopuffs>/a> all lined up for your Birthday, but jm2375 [your evil twin] broke into the playhouse, and ate them!)

Plus she broke all the sprinkler heads except one…and that one she used to tie up Homey’s Guard Poodles. Humbug, your pahtna! She’s not A-housebroken yet, so please beware….like Mr. Miyagi says, LOOK EYE!

  15. Kekoa October 7, 2008 2:48 am

Sorry Mrs. A-house, I spilled da blue ink all over my keyboard. Too many Banzai toasts in honor of your Bertday. G’night!

    Whoo-hoo!

  17. wafan October 7, 2008 3:44 am

Good morning die-hard Warrior fans! Oh, an to the band-wagon’ers, too.

Stong winds blew every single leaf in the neighborhood into my yard. Darn. Why does that always happen? I should get a leaf blower (with stealth mode) and blow them into the neighbor’s yard.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  18. wafan October 7, 2008 3:50 am

Those of you looking for cupcakes (not Damien but the eating kind) the Costco up here has Costco-sized, covered in icing, cupcakes. Yummy!

20 per box, I think. I thought there might be left-overs after feeding eight of my kids. Nope. They sucked those puppies down. Of course I should have known better — teens + food = nothing left.

It’s one thing to stick your arms up and knock and ball down, it’s another to try and catch it. Same reason as why some guys are db’s. Nah, I don’t know but would be interesting to see him out there.

Props to Margo for being able to travel with you. Sounds like she is doing fine! [good thing she nevah had to come up with bail money to spring you out of the calaboose!]

  33. djmitcho October 7, 2008 6:05 am

Good Morning Everyone! Happy Birthday Mrs. A-House! May it be one of many more to come.

  34. Rich2176 October 7, 2008 6:05 am

    Good Morning Kekoa –

This was our 3rd trip to Freakno to watch the puppies lose. We’ve usually had good experiences there. Margo is fully recovered, hair is growing back (so many people still don’t know she’s wearing a wig!), and full of energy. Our niece came to the game with us, and we drove ST’s daughter Allie & her boyfriend to and from the game. I guess the only threatening part of our group was Ronnie & Rob25. Just kidding.

We were saying that the true Warrior fans are the ones who make the trip when you’re not expected to win.

    Best to you and pops…

  35. Addahknowsports October 7, 2008 6:10 am

    Hi Rich-

Thanks for sharing your pics from the Fresno game. Did you guys have a CC too? Glad to hear Margo went with. I can’t wait to meet her. Are you guys coming back for the holidays?

Happy birthday Mrs. A-House and WassupDoc.

jm2375: Shouldn’t you be the one to come up with a computer ranking system the BCS can use that automatically makes UH #1 every year? 😀

  45. Kekoa October 7, 2008 6:43 am

jm2375 ~ OK…so you do plead guilty to 8 counts of malicious mischief. Hmmm more specifically, disarming a sprinkler head would fall under a class B felony right BHF2? That’s gotta be worth 6 years and a day in Halawa for you!

With no credit for time served, and no evidence of “good behavior” you can expect to serve up to and including the final day!

  46. myki October 7, 2008 6:46 am

Do you know if the Boise game with ESPN will retain the tv broadcasting rights?
If so, that means K5 will only do the radio broadcast?

  56. chawan_cut October 7, 2008 7:12 am

happy birthday to wassupdoc too, and to whoever else’s special day this may be.

    Happy Birthday WDoc!!

    On a sidenote – I can smell potato chips….

  59. Maverick October 7, 2008 7:18 am

    Speaking of Boise –

Apparently their rugby style punting is in question now by some refs, whether than can do it, or not. Crazy.

It works great with the right punter.
In my opinion, their punter is the best defenseman. He can place that ball inside the 10 yd. better than any other punter in college ball currently.

But, once he scrambles after receiving the snap, he is out of the tackle box, and now fair game. Good to have a punter that is built like Grasso.

  60. Hawaiianbod October 7, 2008 7:20 am

In addition, Happy Birthday wishes to:

    🙂 Rose (T Chahng’s cousin) 🙂

    Happy Birthday Mrs. Ahouse!
    Happy Birthday Wassupdoc!
    Happy Early Birthday to DrDoc!

continuing from yesterday mid Kaiwi Channel when we lost internet connection:—I was musing about how paddlers must feel the first time going on the Molokai ho’e—are we there yet?, especially on a rough day.

Ferry got under way at 6:15 and we were on our way to Longs at 10:05. Lunch at Tokyo Tei at 11:00, show some family DVDs to my aunty, check out Tasaka’s at 1:00, cruise by Komoda’s. Eat and talk till 11 PM.
Breakfast = some Komoda long johns, papaya, persimmons, cocoapuffs which we brought over.. not done yet 🙂

  66. sjmacro October 7, 2008 7:41 am

Sorry Jason we had to eat all your guri guri. :mr green: Per the owners it doesn’t travel very well, best if consumed on Maui. Lasts only 2 hours in insulated bag. Actually the truth is they are going to close for a couple days this Thursday so they can take a break during intercession. We’ll eat your share here and punt and find something else besides “moose droppings” to bring back. 🙂

djmitcho you wen whitworth in spokane? if so what year you grad. my godson, my high school buddy son and another 808 kid I know went there and all played for whitworth.

  87. d1島 October 7, 2008 8:49 am

    djmitcho,

Yep. QB issues + installing spread option offense = low offensive output

Linfield lost QB1 in 1st game; QB2 in 2nd game. QB3 may have to go again against the defending NWC-champion Pirates. May have to rely on their defense again this week to pull through. It’s also Linfield’s Homecoming so emotions should be high at Maxwell Field.

btw, you know of any good places for us to get together for pre-game in Boise?

    duffer,
howzit…funny you mentioned that, cause my wife and I was talking about this last night. I told her as much as I love being a Marine, I haven’t been able to do what I’ve always wanted to, which is play college ball whether it be basketball or football. My enlistment is almost up and I’ve been contemplating on getting out and enrolling at UH and possibly walk-on. I told her if there was anytime to do it, now would be the time. The only thing that sucks is I’ve invested 12 years into the Corps and would have 8 left before retirement… Plus I have a family to take care of so I would have to ensure we could be taken care of financially and all that. Tough decision as I am in a rock and a hard place in deciding whether I should make a change and fulfill something I’ve always wanted to do or finish out my enlistment and be stable with my retirement…

  92. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 9:26 am

I no think Billy Ray going anywhere, cause he gotta follow in his brother’s footsteps and punt one into the stands in 2012-2013 when we kill the BYU Kitty Cats…

I have a feeling though, for some odd reason that our highly touted recruit Manti Te’o may be headed to the Provo land with his cousin Shilo? Hope not but I have this wierd gut feeling…

  93. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 9:29 am

oh by the way…no such thing as ex-Marine only former Marines…

    “Once a Marine, Always a Marine” 😉

  94. FloridaTed October 7, 2008 9:30 am

    Pauoa Boy,

That’s a tricky situation you’re in and hard to decide. What I do in a situation like this, take out a piece of paper, write down all the pro’s on the left and all the con’s on the right. Assign one point to each item, add up the sides and go with the plus. It may sound simplistic, but it usually works. Just a little advise from an old geaser.

Whatever you decide, don’t look back with what if’s.

  95. SteveM October 7, 2008 9:34 am

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS. A-HOUSE !!!

… you are the unequivocal “Cruise Director” of The Warrior Beat flagship!

  96. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 9:37 am

    Florida Ted,
I hear you, which is the reason I am really considering making a change to do something I’ve always wanted to do. The worst thing would be to live in regret with the shoulda, woulda, coulda…as time goes by. Dunno though lots to think about at the moment…

  97. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 9:42 am

Anybody got the scoops on this Matautia kid from Waipahu? Looks like he’d be a good RB prospect to pick up. Anyone got the stats, height, weight, 40yd time, strength, etc…??? I know he’s been putting up some big numbers this season…

  98. FloridaTed October 7, 2008 9:49 am

    Pauoa Boy,

One of the biggest dangers is the notion that we can relive parts of our youth. In everyones life, there are always large parts we did not get to live out. Life is so full of many possibilities, that it’s virtually impossible to live it all. Trade-offs are an inevitable part of life. A well lived presence has the awareness of this fact and therefore knows that to live the parts of life we do have in front of us to the fullest, is a well lived life.

By the way, in my equation, family gets two points, personal wishes only one, lol. Good luck with your decision, I’ve been there a few times myself

    Enough bloviating for me.

  99. FloridaTed October 7, 2008 9:54 am

    Mrs. A-House,

Wish you a very happy birthday. I’m glad we have such a unifying spirit like you on our blog.

  100. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 9:56 am

    Florida Ted,
Noted…I’ve had many obstacles already where I had to go left or go right…so far so good although I have a few regrets but overall am satisfied with the choices I’ve made. No doubt family is first, but being able to play for the Warriors would be a dream come true! Oh well, if all esle fails I might just beg Coach Mack to help Coach the home team someday…

  101. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 10:00 am

    Mrs. A-House,

Eh ma, make sure you know drink to much in your celebration of your special day. We all know how you young woman get nowadays…gotta make sure you can membah what happen, haha! Anyway, stay beautiful, stay young, luv ya mom! 🙂

  102. djmitcho October 7, 2008 10:01 am

    koakane,
    yeah, Whitworth in Spokane.

    d1,
Whitworth is on their 2nd string QB also. They were doing well against Willamette last week, but the HC is too conservative in my opinion. Even with all of his success, I still think he let someone else run the O.
Not sure about Boise. I’ve only been there twice. Both in the early mid ’90’s. I guess I can ask friends about that.

  103. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 10:01 am

  107. Kekoa October 7, 2008 10:18 am

PB ~ May I add my bailout driven, devalued penny to the mix? Please consider or put your medical care from the military as a #1 factor to consider.

Your children’s health care is paramount right now because of their youth. It’s hard to look into that crystal ball and predict any medical calamity to happen to them, or your wife. You may not use the facilities very much right now in fact. Hopefully it will remain that way, but that’s part of the risk and financial factor.

Shifting to the civilian side would slide that health care issue over to your wife. Hopefully she would be able to find a place of employment that can offer a decent health care plan until you finish school and get back into the work force.

So put an asterisk on this one issue, because it is so vital. If you can deal with it comfortably, then I would say, take the next step and get an honest evaluation from the coaches.

You know the drill, get those highlight vids from your military games. Max out the weight training and run, run, run! You will compete against these youngster who will be full of pi$$ and vinegar, and 10 years younger than you.

Your advantage?…seasoned experience and treachery. You will be able to combine this with the experience of playing the game beyond the high school level for several years already.

Are you up to it Marine?

    Semper Fie!

  120. al October 7, 2008 11:21 am

    pauoa boy…..

first, thank you that you have given of your self to protect this nation for nearly 12 years.

second, consider this. talk to your sgtmaj and ask if you got out would you be able to re-enlist at a later date?

i was thinking (which is always dangerous). perhaps a route for you to take would be to get out and enroll in a junior college. after getting into shape, of course, go and try out for the football team. you will know three things in a hurry.

one, is the passion for the game still there?
two, am i physically capable of playing this game with all these young kids?
three, can i do this and still financially be able to support my family?

you can go to college on the g.i. bill but would still need to have an income from somewhere. but, then the college education could take you a long way later.

if you feel that this is not the route you want, go back and look up that sgtmaj and talk re-enlistment with him.

after all the marines are always looking for a few good men.

    semper fidelis
    and
    God bless you brother.

speaking of birthdays…..although it is not her birthday.
i kept saying to others that my mom was 85years old and still had all her marbles.

    thank God.

she still drives here and there. being the escort for her elder sister of six years. goes to aerobics twice a week, etc.

this sunday she corrected me. she is 87!
it is a blessing to our family that at this age she still can go and is very much independent of herself.

    okay, off topics pau.

  123. Mrs. A-House October 7, 2008 11:29 am

Holy Moly ! What an absolutely jaw-dropping surprise !

Good morning to all my fellow Tsaikos !

Because I asked Midori7 NOT to list my birthday on the Tsaiko list, I was TOTALLY unprepared for the heart-warming greetings I received this morning from you all. Let me describe what transpired as I woke to a beautiful birthday.

Midori7 usually leaves the birthday card from her and MasaBoy and gift where I can see it before I brush my teeth in the morning. Thank you Midori and MasaBoy for the nice Shiseido gift. A-House usually leaves his card on the kitchen counter. Since there was no card on the counter, my first thought was…”eh, wassup w dat!” Just to be sure, I looked around some more and guess what! A-House bought me a UH Warrior pop-up gazebo for the LaTech T-gate and rest of the season ! ! Yeehaaa ! ! Oh boy, Tsaikos, we goin’ pahtay this weekend !

I power-walked, then had breakfast and got ready to go out to tend to my plants. A-House then calls and tells me, “Mom, check the blog, NOW!” Excitedly, I ask him, did I win something?! His reply, “just do it!”

So as I read all the beautiful greetings and tributes from you all, my dear Tsaiko friends…I’m wiping away tears of happiness (not kidding), and I am filled with joy and deep appreciation for your kindness and friendship. It was a total surprise! It especially touches my heart when Pauoa Boy, Jason and the rest of my hanai sons and daughters call me “mom” and “auntie” (Colt, too, if he only knew about his hanai relationship to me.) Warmest aloha and Mahalo nui loa !

BTW, my Happy Birthday ! greetings to Dr. Doc, A-Sports, TChahng’s cousin, Rose and all the rest of the Libras. Not to brag, but Libras are mighty fine people, if I do say so myself.

2nd BTW, ST, no pressure to get me (or let me win) the football helmet I’ve dreamt about. I already got one, so just the pride of having you as a prominent celebrity neighbor, of whom we brag to friends and family constantly, is the best birthday gift to me from you.

Be back later after I finish my chores. Bye for now…

  124. g-nalo October 7, 2008 11:35 am

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY WASSUPDOC!!!

Lunch time at work for me–yeah, I’m working this week–good time to do routine maintenance and updates on MacBook carts when the students are out. But I’m gonna take off next Monday…need an extra day to recover from the game, tailgate, and maybe other stuff :l

  127. Unkanesson October 7, 2008 11:42 am

    Good morning Tsaiko land!
Happy Birthday to all my fellow Libras —
    Mrs. A House!
    Wassupdoc and DrDoc!
    Mrs. d1shima!
Hope I didn’t miss anyone, if so, Happy Birthday to you too!!
On the subject of Warrior Football, I was thinking about the square peg/round hole analogy last night, then this morning (thanks to Chawan_Cut) I heard Coach Mack allude to it (love his way with cliches — “…not fitting somebody into a square peg.”). It’s apropos regarding Inoke, and I’m glad they figured it out. Now they need to put that kind of thinking to developing some plays for Leon Wright-Jackson. The plays they’re calling for him just aren’t working — he keeps running into a traffic jam where the hole’s supposed to be. I know he’s a better offensive weapon than he’s shown so far this season, and I think it’s the coaches that need to come up with the solution.

Here and on the blog “lifeboat” I referred to Mrs. A-House as the “Cruise Director” of the blog. So appropriate for this irrepressible lady!

It occurs to me that the Tsai-ko Social Director position is now vacant wih the apparent retirement of gigi-hawaii…. so, I nominate Mrs. A-House for Tsai-ko Social Director…..

(BTW Al has the title of “Tsai-ko Restaurant Boss” –it’s in the early 2007 archives) 😆

Sorry to change the subject, but I’ve got to get something off my chest that I saw on the news last night.

During one of Palin’s stops yesterday, someone in the crowd heckled her. She turned and said “My son is fighting in Iraq so you can have the right to do that.” Is she an idiot, imbicile or just clueless? Does she not realize that our troops aren’t there for OUR freedom of speech? Plus, I’d bet everything I own that he’s not “fighting” – like with weapon in hand….

    Okay, I feel much better…

  136. TChahng [태한민국] October 7, 2008 12:31 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

There is a difference between an ex-Marine, former Marine, and Marine (Ret.)

You hear about the ex-Marine on the police blotter, the ones that got kicked out and get in beeeg trouble in da civilian world. The former Marine was all good but didn’t make it to the finish line, 20 years. The Marine (Ret.) is the smaaht one, collecting his retirement check, working a second career job, and getting drunk on Soju and eating Kalbi in Seoul. (Ooops!, das not me. Fo real, not me!)

  137. addahknowjoe October 7, 2008 12:41 pm

Ever had a time when you were carrying something and you were looking for a place to put it down? You finally settle on a make shift area with the possible intent of maybe moving it later? And probably not?

Well, apparently Rivals.com Mike Huguenin had no place to put Hawaii after their victory over Fresno St. so he stuck them at 102. Well below LaTech and New Mexico State and so many other teams Hawaii could eat for lunch.

Mahalo for all the Happy Burpday wishes; however, the best gift of all is at hand. Please join us at the Call the Coach show tomorrow night to celebrate the start of theChing/Cooke Field Project:

Just got off the phone with David Hafner, Asst. VC for Campus Services
Office of Facilities and Grounds. The contractor and one of David’s staffers are meeting at the CCField and nearby environs to identify locations for worker parking and equipment storage (backhoes, etc.)

The rest of the week will be spent in ordering supplies locally and putting together detailed plans.

The turf itself has been ordered, but the shipping time has not yet released by the manufacturer. Once that information is available, it will be much easier to give a project completion date.

Site preparation work will begin next Monday and there is likely to be a ground-breaking ceremony where the Big Muckamuckas will take don hard hats and take up “golden shovels” to mark the occasion. If this happens, then the public will be invited to attend. David says that as soon as he gets the word as to whether this will happen, he will call me so that I can get the word out to everyone here. I am sure that someone in the HA sports department will also write a story.

Once the materials arrive in Hawai`i, it will take about seven to ten working days – which will include Saturdays – to complete the installation and another four to five days for inspection and signing off.

Once accepted by the University, there will be a full-on dedication ceremony to which the public will also be invited.

The Ching/Cooke Field is finally back on track – three months behind schedule.

  140. J-Dog October 7, 2008 1:24 pm

    Howzit Uncle Kekoa,

Das one of the things I’ve been thinking about is the financial, medical, dental, burden I would sacrifice by getting out. I considered possibly doing a reserve route and then go back active when pau. Dunno lots to consider…I mean I like try play but no like give up what I’ve invested in for many years. I already talk to some of my superiors who obviously want me to stay and told me to go for the All-Marine team instead. Thing is though I told them that everytime I requested to go be on the All Marine team I got denied due to operational commitments…so it’s not a guarantee. I mean I play year round in the intramural leagues on base and also on the Base All-Star teams but being active, it’s mission first. Anyway, I already started putting in the work in the gym now that my back is okay…so we’ll see.

for shua the passion is still there…just think of Blaze Soares intensity! Anyway, I thought about doing that and having broken time, but kind of iffy in that situation when you leave for a prolonged period of time. Anyway, paying for college wouldn’t be a problem and I almost went to enroll at Arizona Western College to play ball. I dunno though cause like my boy Chad Owens would say “I still got it”…so I know if I put in the work I could play.

    ST,
Why are they moving my favorite player, Pilares, again? It’s not like he wasn’t productive the last couple of games…Heck, he only made more touchdowns that anyone else and gained more yards than any other RBs (I say RB b/c Funaki had more). When he’s at slotback, he never touches the ball because he’s backup. Are they moving him to be a starter? I don’t mean to second guess the coaches, but maybe you can enlighten me on the change. I’m sure there’s a good reason, otherwise the coaches are being Palin-esque.

  155. jasonk October 7, 2008 2:48 pm

is there a reason why tua hasn’t been the “fg blocker” the entire season? if i’m mistaken, my apologies…

the fresno game seemed like the first time we put any pressure or effort into blocking a kick this season.

if tua was able to get a piece of just one of the san jose kicks, we could very well be 3-2 right now, not 2-3. but i digress…. it’s all in the past.

  156. Stephen Tsai October 7, 2008 2:49 pm

    jasonk:
Tua was the blocker for the oregon state game. he made the travel roster.

  157. wafan October 7, 2008 2:52 pm

    C_C . . .

    I whole-heartedly agree!!!

From the reflection on the truck window it looks like the Fred Meyer in West Bremerton. If that is correct was that Mongolian Grill place still there to the right side of the main entrance? Panda something or other. No, not the Panda Express. It is an okay place to get some good vegi dishes.

If you have the time, head out to West Sound Technical Center in Bremerton. It is the local tech school for high school students. The culinary arts program there is one of the best in Washington — they run a restaurant open to the public. Great food! It is located off Hwy 3 near the junction of Hwy 16 and Hwy 3, on National Avenue.

How much longer will you be here?

  158. Scoutman October 7, 2008 2:53 pm

    @ Pauoa Boy

What is your combine measurables (40, bench, vertical, agility, etc.).

  159. jasonk October 7, 2008 2:54 pm

    thanks st.
good to know it only took us 3 games to find someone to be the designated fg blocker.

  160. madeinhawaii October 7, 2008 3:07 pm

    jasonk,

The other way to look at it is, it took McMackin a career 4 games as Headcoach in D-1 football to find the chemistry needed to take down a ranked foe on the road.

  161. madeinhawaii October 7, 2008 3:08 pm

Oh yeah.. lest I forget, Happy B-day Mrs. A-House!

  162. jasonk October 7, 2008 3:18 pm

    haha good point mih…

in jj’s 116 games… ZERO road wins against a ranked opponent.

    keep it up mack.

  163. Da Punchbowl Kid October 7, 2008 3:44 pm

    LMAO@Rich!

BTW- I think that Tua needs a new nick name: “The Elevator”. Watch his amazing blocked kick in replay and you’lll see what I mean. 😉

I wonder how long Tsai’s been waiting to write “Mouton on the futon.”? 😆

  164. Just Saying October 7, 2008 3:48 pm

the number would not be 116 games since UH did not play 116 road games in JJ tenure.

  165. LizKauai [Believer] October 7, 2008 4:11 pm

    Hiya-
The coaches are designing playing schemes around the strengths of our players. This makes all the sense in the world. This is college, not the NFL where you “buy” players to do certain jobs a certain way.

I think our coaches are going to end up with a fantastic team by doing this… and a happy team – that will attract new recruits in droves!

    Hi Ho!

  166. Just Saying October 7, 2008 4:14 pm

why do you say hi ho

  167. LizKauai [Believer] October 7, 2008 4:17 pm

hi ho= hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to work we go…(getting back to work)

jiggety-jig = home again, home again, jiggety jig (going home)

Esme/Esme and out/ Whoosh= in for a quick comment and logging off

  169. jasonk October 7, 2008 4:29 pm

mih mentioned that out of 4 CAREER games, mack has 1 road win against a ranked opponent.
it made sense to make a reference to jj’s 116 CAREER games since that’s what we were already talking about.

and more importantly, i was too lazy to find a website that broke down all of jj’s away games and what not. 😛

  171. Ralph October 7, 2008 4:59 pm

    anyone else watched the debate?

  172. wafan October 7, 2008 5:18 pm

Yes. Recorded it for my Civics class to watch tomorrow. If they want to fall asleep it will at least be a good reason! HA!

Both of them did not answer questions but were campaining instead.

How did you like it when McCain refused to shake Obama’s hand at the end? A non-commital pat on the back just does not cut it. How about McCain’s comment of “That guy” or something akin to that. Hmmmmmm. Quite a bit of disrespect.

  173. bighilofan2 October 7, 2008 5:22 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos everywhere.

First, Happy Birthday to Mrs. A House and Wassup Doc. You are two classy ladies and great contributors to this blogsite. Thank you.

Second, and a verY BIG SECOND, hats off to lil Stutz and his supah big braddah. Way to go,
Stutzmans. We NEED you. We want you to be a part of our Warriors!!!! If only so we can bring some healin hands onto da BY Whoz. heh heh and also to give that SoCal QB Neilsen mo reason for hook up wit us, knowing we get quality guyz for him 2 trow 2.

nah nah, just funnin with BYU. I looking forward to da day when I can plan my trip to Honolulu fo watch dat game, fo sure!!! And if the economy no go kaput, i going go BYU for watch dat game first. I tink da BYU game is a huge rivalry, one dat i gotta see fo my own eyez.

    Go Warriors!!!!

  174. Ralph October 7, 2008 5:34 pm

Wafan the debate ground rules made the debate predictable, to many constraints…Gergen mentioned that the Stanford study indicate there might be a swing of 6 points to McCain because Obama is black and has nothing to do with issues…

  175. wafan October 7, 2008 5:42 pm

    Ralph . . .

Missed the first 15 minutes or so. But the ending polls done by CNN are indicating Obama gained a lot of points in the undecided states and with women more so than with men.

I think we find out tomorrow that Obama is a lot closer than the predicted six Electoral College votes CNN said he needed to win the presidency earlier today. Oops, here comes their EC vote map. Dang. It is looking bad for McCain/Palin.

  176. wafan October 7, 2008 5:48 pm

Hopefully, the last debate in two weeks will be more bare-fisted, so to speak. The only way McCain can win the presidence is to control the outrageous claims by Palin, come up with believable policies for the economy and health care, calm down concerns about the Iraqi conflict, and figure out a way to inform without taking potshots.

  177. wafan October 7, 2008 5:49 pm

Well, time to check for cracks.

Happy birthday to all the birthday babes!!!

  178. Hoohiki October 7, 2008 5:55 pm

    wafan,
McCain would’ve seemed less harsh if he had said ” that guy”. At least he would be referring to him as a human being. He actually pointed in Obama’s direction with his thumb and said “that one”. I like and respect McCain because he is at least seemingly attempting to look out for the best interests of our country, but these presidential campaigning is making him look less grandfatherly and more of an old ornery man. He wears his emotions on his sleeve.

On a sports note, PB…go for it. You only live once. I’m sure your wife will see that way too and make the necessary sacrifices because I’m sure you’ll do it for her dreams.

  179. Committed Road Warrior October 7, 2008 5:57 pm

This site might be useful for breaking down JJ’s road games during his tenure:

…..or maybe not. Not sure if this was what you were referencing.

He said the Internet rumor is false.

    Go Warriors!!!!

  184. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 7:22 pm

    BHF2,

If I didn’t think I could play I wouldn’t consider it. I not saying I going out there for be one all-star, but I can hold my own! I’ve had many people tell me I should’ve been playing college ball somewhere whether it be for basketball or football. No, I not bragging or trying to hype myself up with false illusions but I know what I’m capable of. Besides I not 30yrs old…I’m in my late 20’s and can still hang with the boys. Plus as a Marine I work out on a daily basis and can run for days…so I’m not concerned about that. Regardless, I not trying to be one “Rudy”, far from it… I would like to wear the Warrior Uniform even if it meant being on the scout team or whatevas… Just something I’ve always wanted to do…and yes I have played against college competition and semi-pro in both basketball and football respectively…

  185. bighilofan2 October 7, 2008 7:23 pm

Max Squat: 405lbs. haven’t tried to go heavier yet but can
    40yd: 4.6-4.7 range
Vert: Dunno but I can grab rim but not dunk

I’ve played S, WR, RB, and QB

  191. Jason October 7, 2008 7:55 pm

So after watching the debate today at school, I caught the bus down to University Ave and King St, walked over to the Willows, and was right about to pass through the first set of doors when I realized there’s no Call the Coach tonight. Without stopping, I turned around on a dime and walked back to the bus stop with a sheepish grin on my face. Whoops. 😀

jasonk: This win over Fresno State was UH’s first road victory EVER against a ranked opponent. That goes back through Jones, vonAppen, Wagner, Tomey, and beyond. They were 0-10 before that.

  192. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 8:00 pm

    al,

Thanks, I’ve only been into it a few weeks since I injured my back but I’m trying to get back into football shape. I had to sit out this season because of my injury but I got cleared by the doc to start lifting again and all that.

Had to skip down to the end and did not have time to read anything. Haven’t had internet except for a few minutes in the past week. The hotel said that it’s fixed today so I’m anxious to get back there tonight and blog on.

I did see in the Stars and Stripes that the Warriors played an incredible game with courage! Go Warriors! I’m so bummed to have missed the game.

  196. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 8:07 pm

Anyway, it’s homecoming this week…wish I could be there to see our WAC Champ Warrior Boys pound the Loseana Tech Puppies!

  197. Jason October 7, 2008 8:13 pm

Glad to hear (also sad for Kelli) that the student tickets appear to be sold out (at least online). I told a few people after the SJSU game that I was afraid student turnout would be bad for this game if we got smacked around by Fresno State. The attitude of some of the students during the game (and as they left while the game was tied) reminded me a lot of 2005, when the stands were barely half-filled. But wins energize the fan base, and it looks like Aloha Stadium will be rocking on Saturday. Here’s hoping for a sell out. 🙂

  198. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 8:17 pm

    Speaking of Kealoha Pilares,
He is one of my favorite players on the team as well. One of the best playmakers on offense. So I’m wondering why move him back to slot if he’ll be behind Bain…doesn’t make sense. Pilares needs to be on the field making plays and needs the dayum ball in his hands consistently. He is the best running back option we have at the moment until LWJ and Libre return, but even then I’d give him the ball. If I was Coach I would utililize Pilares like Reggie Bush and set him up in open space with screens and the such…just my thoughts…

  199. WarriorMojo October 7, 2008 8:18 pm

Jason, one thing I noticed at the San Jo game was a ton of empty seats in the student section. Or was that not the student section?

  200. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2008 8:21 pm

I’m Inoke…lol…funny…cannot help but like the guy, very humble although I’d like to see Inoke more intense and fired up at times. Seems too much of a nice guy like Coach Mack. No need apologize to your receivers, just keep making plays and moving the ball into the endzone and everything will be au’ryte.

  201. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 7, 2008 8:43 pm

Pauoa Boy- I’m all for pursuit of dreams. As a mom, my kids’ dreams become my own and my dreams must work for them. Those are dreams that can come true.

  202. Jason October 7, 2008 8:44 pm

Pauoa Boy: I don’t think anyone needs to worry about Pilares not getting the ball. Mack knows Pilares is a playmaker, and I think we’ll see the Warriors try to use him like Bush, both as a running back and slotback. (At least, I hope that’s their plan.) But I think it makes sense to move Pilares to slotback, let him get the practice reps there so he can continue to learn the offense. The running game isn’t so complicated that they can’t play him at RB too, despite the lack of practice. You can’t have him practice at RB and just stick him in at slot, he needs the reps. Plus, he’s probably a two-year starter at slot from next year, so it’s good to get him going there for the future. Between Libre, Wright-Jackson, and Farmer, with a little Pilares thrown in there for good measure, I think the RB position is fine.

WarriorMojo: IDK, I thought it was pretty full until they started leaving in the 4th quarter. You’re talking about the orange sections where the north end zone and mauka sideline meet, right? All the students have ThunderStix, and the seats are new (from last year). Maybe you checked us out early; the students are pretty late to arrive, for whatever reason.

The student fanbase has been much better this year than in the past three years; I firmly believe a lot of students decided to come to UH because of the football season last year. Lots of transfer students and freshmen from the Mainland. Granted, that’s why they seem more fickle too — they are used to the Colt Brennan-run R&S, not the Inoke Funaki “Shoots, Go Run.” (Hehe, I love that name.)

  203. Stretch October 7, 2008 8:48 pm

I will be stopping by the UH ticket office tomorrow morning to check on the Vball tickets for Friday. I will ask them about the student tickets and see if they are available.

It would be awesome to see the student section jumping again as it was in the past.

  204. madeinhawaii October 7, 2008 9:38 pm

One of the things that’s missing this year is that separation Bess and Mullen used to get in the redzone. That combined with their sure hands made those last 20 yards no different to Hawaii’s offense than any other 20 yards. The shiftyness of Pilares at slotback could bring that back to the playing field. Turn our 3 pointers to 6 pointers… and Dan’s field goals to PATs.

  205. JC October 7, 2008 10:33 pm

Inoke performed well against Frenso State but he needs to stay humble and correct his mistakes and weaknesses. The defense has improved but still has a lot of room for improvement as well as the special teams.

  211. jm2375 October 7, 2008 11:23 pm

d1 – aiyah. Pretty complicated. I’m trying to figure out how I would program it, but it would take way too much effort for my little brain. Perhaps chawan_cut or some other ics major can do ’em. Maybe need supa computah? Too bad Garret not hea.

Let’s see if I got this right:
    1) adjust every I-A team’s record by throwing out all wins against lower division opponents.
    2) adjust every I-AA team’s record by throwing out all wins against I-AA opponents and games against lower division opponents.
    3) take each team’s schedule and throw out the head-to-head for each opponent’s record
    4) add up the opponents’ win-loss and the opponent’s opponent’s records
    5) determine weighted win %
    6) rank all teams by win % and divide them up into 4 groups and rank that
    7) divide the quartile rank by 25 and add that to their BCS total.

Clear as mud? 🙄 Jason? C_C?

    Weird, huh?

Anyhow, the last time I was out there was two years ago. The area actually has been fixed up quite a bit since I moved to the area 25 years ago.

  230. Ronnie October 8, 2008 4:03 am

    Good Morning Warrior Nation!

I may have 3 tickets for the game this Saturday, if my nephew isn’t going to use them. They are in the brown section to the right of the scoreboard, if you’re looking at the scoreboard. They are a couple of seats away from Rob25.

  231. Ronnie October 8, 2008 4:11 am

I’ve been reading message boards from other WAC teams to get their reaction to us beating Fresno on Saturday… Everyone agrees that the PI and running into the kicker penalties were bogus.

What I find interesting is that la-la Tech thinks our team will be on an emotional low and not put up a fight against them… They must not remember that la-la tech is the only school to complain about the haka and actually ask for the penalty. Add to that how their coach gave scouting reports to georgia and I think we have lots of reason for intensity.

And poor old boise… Their big showdown at the end of the season just isn’t going to be as interesting as they wanted it to be. “Fresno didn’t hold up their end of the bargain” is what I read a lot. I also read that they are so very confident that they will be back to the BCS once BYWhoo and Utah lose. Seems like they have completely overlooked our game. Good for them, I say. Keep thinking about their upcoming game against Nevada. I say, keep it up. We’ll see what happens!

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

For those who are attending the Volleyball game on Friday with the Tsaiko group, I will be stopping by the ticket office today to check on our tickets. There is a UHAA golf tournament today, so as a good supporting alumni, I will sacrifice my time and participate. I will be emailing you guys later tonight when I get home.

There are a few extra tickets so if anyone is still interested in joining us, please email me at stretch6592 at yahoo.
