Wednesday report

• After acing two physical examinations — the 1-mile run yesterday and agility drills today — running back Daniel Libre was cleared to practice. Libre, who did not play last week because of a high-ankle sprain, will play against Oregon State.
• Running back Leon Wright-Jackson worked out on the sideline today. He has a strained arch. He is expected to play against Oregon State.
• Aaron Kia, who did not play against Weber State because of tendinitis in his knees, practiced as the No. 1 left tackle today. Keith AhSoon, who started at left tackle last week, was back at left guard. The Warriors are prepared to be without Laupepa Letuli, who has a small tear in his left shoulder. Letuli did not compete in team drills today.
• Jovonte Taylor has been slowed by tenderness in his knees. Although he is expected to play this weekend, it could open the way for Malcolm Lane to return kickoffs. Lane had two kick returns for touchdowns last year. Ryan Mouton is the other kick returner.

Ran into Blaze Soares today. His left foot was in a medical boot. I think he’s figuring on returning, at the latest, for the Fresno State game. There’s a chance he might make it for San Jose State. (That’ll keep Dick Tomey up at night.)

The biggest hit of today’s practice came when an offensive lineman blocked safety Desmond Thomas, who inadvertently floored head coach Greg McMackin. Princess Leila described it as that familiar movie scene, when a guy is standing in front of a train and, in the next scene, the guy is gone. McMackin, being the tough guy, got up immediately. I think we’re missing Princess Leila’s videos.

    I’m glad that Libre and LWJ will be able to play at Oregon State. That makes it interesting to see who wil make the travel roster at RB–my guess is Libre, LWJ, Rego, and Pilares (who is at 2 positions).

    This Oregon paper seems to be looking past the UH game.

    Saturday’s home game against Hawaii should help them get in the win column, but with No. 1 USC and a matchup at Utah to follow, the Beavers figure to be 1-4 in early October.

    Freshman tailback Jacquizz Rodgers looked like the real deal after rushing for 99 yards and two touchdowns in the Penn State game. But wasn’t Ryan McCants supposed to the bruising tailback who would fill the shoes of Yvenson Bernard? McCants has eight carries for 19 yards so far.

    With LWJ and Libre not fully healthy, I would think that Pilares might need to be used at RB if they aggravate their injuries. It is nice that Pilares is also a backup slot receiver, so UH has some roster flexibility with a limited travel roster.

    QB Tyler Graunke, Hawaii
    Albeit painful to call attention to, the return of disreputable senior quarterback for the Hawaii Warriors Tyler Graunke in Saturday night’s game against Weber State deserves some degree of recognition. After original starter Inoki Funaki went 7-of-14 for 87 yards in the first half of the Warriors’ first home game of the 2008 season, Hawaii head coach Greg McMackin elected to replace Funaki with Graunke, only to see the senior throw for 218 yards and three touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. Graunke’s performance allowed Hawaii to avoid a potential loss at the hands of their FCS opponent. Fantasy owners will want to watch closely the news wires at the start of the upcoming week to determine what Graunke’s status will be heading into a Week 3 matchup at Oregon State as the senior showed he has the talent to put up big numbers in the Hawaii passing attack.

    Another note about RGM. Looks like he’s on the practice roster this week as he needs to learn the offense quickly and try to get on the field. Also note that BC added another WR the same day that they added RGM–RGM has to beat that guy out plus the WRs that are already on the roster and have been playing in the system. I believe he can do it, but he needs to learn fast and be healthy.

    Receivers Ryan Grice-Mullen, from the University of Hawaii, and former Blue Bomber and Alouette O’Neil Wilson joined the Lions Tuesday. Both have been added to the expanded (up to 12 players) practice roster.

    Garret – Yups…true, I was just saying though with Rego back there Pilares could move back to slot ensuring all injuries are healed of course. Regardless though I would like to see Pilares get more touches he needs to be on the field one way or the other, he’s badarse!

    Eh so I heard that the Underwater LegoLand place sucks. We got some free tickets to go but from the reviews I’ve been hearing I dunno if I like waste my time. Maybe we’ll check it out and just go LegoLand if not good.

    I used to wonder why USC recruited sooo many rb’s?, with the recent rb injuries at UH recently, I can appreciate having 4-5 rb’s available for every game and then some.
    I like that Rego kid…..tough like Nate.

    Interesting info on Pilares. With the health situation at RB right now, I think that was a good decision. Pilares has the bye week to get back up to speed at slotback, and the bye week is a good time to get the RBs back up to speed after their returns from injury.

    I agree with you about the RB situation–my guess is that Pilares will be back practicing at slotback next week.

    I took my family to Sea Life Legoland (we had free tickets) and it was a waste of time. Maybe your boys might like to go once for an hour or less, but after that you will be done with it and probably won’t go back!

    The Advertiser’s website has the Washington Post article about wondering if Campbell is a bad fit for the West Coast Offense…if he is a bad fit I hope that Colt gets a shot sometime after midseason.

    Jason Campbell isn’t as bad a mismatch for the West Coast offense as he has seemed so far. Nobody could be.

    But it’s not too early to start wondering whether a 6-foot-5 strong-armed passer, who was drafted by Joe Gibbs to run a maximum-protection, lock-on-one-receiver, rush-to-set-up-the-bomb offense, is fundamentally ill-suited to Jim Zorn’s quick-drop, see-the-field-fast, super-accurate-passing offense. You could hardly design two attacks that required more dissimilar skill sets.

    Campbell, who’s had to learn seven offensive schemes in his college and pro career, faces a huge task. It’s amazing he doesn’t come to the line, call a Gibbs play in an Al Saunders formation with a Zorn snap count, then scream, “I give up.”

    The Oregonian likes the idea of UH playing Oregon State every year.

    Ferd Lewis of the Honolulu Advertiser heard Riley mention yesterday that he would love to play the Rainbows every year, under a home-and-home agreement. … three members of the media suffered pulled hamstrings, leaping to their feet to applaud. … and apparently UH loves the idea, too, because athletic director Jim Donovan said, “it would be great for us, and them, I think.” … I think so, too, although it ain’t so good for OS(U) if Hawaii is really, really good. As in Colt Brennan good.

    Here is Ferd’s story, and I am emailing Donovan this morning to let him know that the Oregon media heartily endorse this idea. (Dude, what kind of a rate can we get at the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore? .. OSU surely will stay there again, out of respect for its sister school, Kahuku High).

    I spoke with Jesse Williams a few days ago. Darn time difference. He was a day ahead, so it was like calling into the future.
    Nice guy.
    I met him last year, when he attended two UH practices. Big guy. No neck. If it’s possible to look strong, well, he looked strong.
    He was lost in the shuffle for a bit. But he’s good to go now. If he doesn’t make it as a d-tackle, he’ll be an offensive guard.

    Article about how badly Oregon State needs to win this game. I knew that Oregon State’s D was young, but it is amazing that ALL 7 of their front 7 on D are first-year starters!

    It hardly seems possible, but two games into the 2008 college football season Oregon State finds itself at the crossroads.

    A loss Saturday to Hawaii would make the Beavers 0-3 for the first time since 1996, with No. 1 USC coming to town Sept. 25.

    Talk about a sense of urgency.

    With seven first-year starters in the front seven, no one expected the Beavers to lead the nation in rushing defense like they did in 2007. But after giving up 239 yards on the ground in Saturday’s 45-14 loss at then-No. 19 Penn State, and 210 yards in a 36-28 defeat at Stanford in the season opener, OSU ranks 110th among 119 Football Bowl Sub-division schools against the run.

    Poor tackling and missed assignments have plagued the Beavers.

    Looks like Oregon State’s punter has been having problems…that could be important for the field position battle.

    Riley plans to stay with punter Johnny Hekker, who is averaging just 28.6 yards on seven punts with one blocked (he also was dropped for a loss while trying to escape the rush against Penn State).

    The starting QB for Virginia has the same favorite NFL QB as many people in Hawaii!

    As expected, Virginia quarterback Pete Lalich has a favorite quarterback in the NFL.

    Scratch off Tom Brady and Peyton Manning from the potential candidates.

    “My favorite quarterback is Colt Brennan and I think he should start for the Redskins,” Lalich said with a smile. “I think he is the man. I watched him at Hawaii, and in the preseason he was amazing. I think he only threw a few incompletions. Coach [Jim] Zorn doesn’t like him.”

    I watched a tape of the OSU-Penn State game. That punter takes a long time to kick. I guess UH fans are spoiled by Jake Ingram’s quick snaps.

    I’d prefer for UH to play Stanford every year because they don’t recruit in Hawaii much and because they aren’t very good so UH can pound a Pac-10 team every year. Plus, I have friends that live right next to campus so I have a free place to stay for the games!

    I think that most of the Pac-10 teams who are interested in playing in Hawaii are the ones who recruit heavily in Hawaii. That is why I like Stanford as an opponent.

    The only nice thing about Sea Life Legoland is that it is indoors and air conditioned. Plus, it is junk so there are no lines. So, you can go there in the middle of the day when it is hot and the lines are longest at Legoland, as a nice air-conditioned break.

    This article in the Fresno Bee lists 4 BCS buster candidates–the 4 ranked teams (Fresno State, East Carolina, BYU, Utah).

    Should this success continue late into the year, mid-major coaches might find it tougher to cheer for one another.

    And that’s because there can be only one true BCS buster each season.

    The college football system allows just one team from a non-BCS conference a guaranteed bid into a BCS bowl — granted to the team highest in the final BCS standings should multiple non-BCS programs finish in the top 12 (or top 16 and ahead of a BCS conference champion).

    Others would be eligible for a BCS bowl as an at-large selection but likely turned down with bowls preferring a BCS school.

    The Western Athletic Conference discovered tough reality in 2004 when Boise State went undefeated and ended No. 8 in the final BCS standings, but it was an undefeated Utah team that received the automatic BCS bid and played in the Fiesta Bowl.

    Boise State played in the less lucrative AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

    The Fresno Bee talked about UH.

    Four quarterbacks later, Hawaii’s carousel under center finally might be over with Tyler Graunke back as the starter.

    Graunke came off the bench to throw for 218 yards and three touchdowns in the second half to rally Hawaii to a 36-17 win against Weber State. In the process, he was named the WAC’s offensive player of the week.

    Graunke, who passed for 1,234 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games last year as a backup to three-year starter Colt Brennan, had been expected to replace the Heisman Trophy finalist.

    But Graunke missed summer camp because of academic issues and didn’t practice until last week.

    With Hawaii down 17-7 at halftime Saturday to a Football Championship Subdivision team, coach Greg McMackin turned to his most experienced quarterback.

    Hawaii now has used four quarterbacks in two games.

    You asked about Nevada’s situation today so here is an update.

    Nevada’s loss of starting running back Luke Lippincott to a season-ending knee injury Saturday has forced the Wolf Pack to turn to a player who quit last year.

    Sophomore Vai Taua was listed as the starter for Nevada’s trip to No. 6 Missouri on Saturday. Taua ran for 63 yards on 11 carries last week in Nevada’s 35-19 loss to No. 12 Texas Tech after Lippincott went down in the second quarter.

    A year ago, Taua quit the team midseason, then requested to return and was reinstated two weeks later, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

    Lippincott tore his left anterior cruciate ligament. He was an All-WAC first-team selection last season when he ran for 1,420 yards and led the conference with 18 total touchdowns.

    “For us, he was a great player and a motivational factor on and off the field,” Nevada coach Chris Ault said. “You don’t replace him.”

    Quarterback Colin Kaepernick led Nevada in rushing last week with 17 carries for 92 yards.

    Coach Tony Sparano took offense Wednesday at the suggestion the Dolphins wide receivers had a rough opener against the New York Jets, but it was hard to believe him if you saw the game. But Sparano was right when he pointed out that rookie free agent Davone Bess made the most of his opportunities.

    This one is from the Palm Beach Post. The article is about first-round pick Ginn, but it mentions Bess.

    Against the Jets, Ginn returned three punts for only 13 yards.

    Meanwhile, the Dolphins received better production out of a pair of undrafted receivers.

    Rookie Davone Bess returned a punt 25 yards and a kickoff 21 yards. Third-year pro Greg Camarillo had three catches for 37 yards.

    Last article I found–this one is from the Associated Press. It is GOOD that Bess is working hard to improve, but kind of sad that he’s the only WR that stayed late to study film with Miami’s QB.

    The season has barely begun for the Miami Dolphins, and quarterback Chad Pennington already knows an open wide receiver can be hard to find.

    The search kept him in the film room past dinnertime last week. The team complex was largely deserted, but Pennington and free-agent rookie receiver Davone Bess were still studying game tapes.

    “I guess we took them lightly”… No excuse. Sometimes talent will be overtaken by sheer will.

    You guys will embark on your third challenge of the season in a few days. You’ve been to hell and back at Florida and that is done with and in the books. Oregon State has your number thus far and they came into our house and watched us walk off the field with our heads down.

    The difference this season is that MANY of you know how to win. MANY of you lived survived San Jose State, LaTech, and Nevada from last year. History was on the line last season and this year, respect is the prize to be won. No ring, no shirt, and no cap or trophy is given for that.

    Don’t second guess yourself and just win the day!!!

    Kazz – Howzit just got the jersey in today. Not really enthusiastic about the jersey though as I would expect more from Under Armour. The quality of the replica jersey is really subpar in my opinion. Whoever they got as the designer for UH apparel should be fired. Anyway, I hope they have some authentic ones coming in soon.

    Next year we loose Ingram, Grasso, and Kelly. Farmer was also taking the spot at LS, but he’s a senior too.

    However I think ST mentioned that Ingram’s younger brother will enroll at UH.

    Still those three made a big difference in key situations last season on the FGs and the improved PAT game.

    Yes, service unit plays will be big question mark next season.

    It’s the same quality as the Nike ones last season. Besides, I’ve seen the other UA schools replica jerseys and they are the same.

    However if UA doesnt have authentic ones for the other schools either. Again if they do release them for UH, they will be more expensive than usual even for an authentic jersey due to the tapa and all that.

    I was able to get my hands and handle a true authentic UH UA jersey and the quality is so much more thicker and colors vibrant down to the tapa print. Its too bad that the replicas could not be like the Nike Swingman jersey–at least it has that stitched look.

It is also being sponsored by Bud Light so I am assuming Bud Light girls will be there and they may have some specials (KK, that’s right up your alley). There will also be a contest for the Ultimate Warrior Fan. Per Ige’s, “Three lucky winners will receive tickets for the 2009 UH vs. UNLV game. The theme is the Ultimate Warrior Fan so come dressed to impress and unleash your inner Ultimate Warrior.” Not sure what that’s all about but I’ll put it out there.

    The jersey that was presented to boydgaming was authentic and I was fortunate to see it and feel it on Saturday night. Everything stitched and the material down the sides was different than the front. Very tapered as well. Too bad that the number is “08”….Needless to say, its a nice jersey.

    Even the #s were stitched? I have an authentic #15 Nike one and the #s are still screen printed on but with a thicker coat and I’m pretty sure the players’ ones were the same too as I could see the edges of the #s peeling in photos from last season.

    I can’t remember if the #s on the Under Armour ones were stitched though.

    Numbers are stitched. The “0” and the “8” were of the Nike Swingman type except it seemed a little more thicker. It is very very tapered. And there is definetely a difference of the mesh material on the front/ back and the spandex type material along the sides. It seemed pretty big, something that a lineman would wear. It seems pretty thick and sturdy. Did you see that pic of Mouton from the Florida game in SI where the defender is tearing the jersey?….it has a lot of elasticity as shown in that pic. What is ghetto is that the nameplate that says “BOYD GAMING” was in the thin plastic/vinyl??? lettering like how the custom jerseys were done last year. Im assuming that whenever there is a corporate sponsor for the game and the Athletic Department presents the jersey it will be with the same ghetto nameplate but with a different company name.

    Pauoa boy, don’t underestimate Stanford. Not too long ago Stanford went to rose bowl. They also kicked Norte Dames okole a couple of times. Stanford was a formidable team in the Pac-10 during Dennis Greens’ and Tyrone Willinghams’ tenure. I remember one year where Stanford beat USC, UCLA, CAL. Yes the Stanford program has its ups and downs. With Jim Harbaugh, they might be on the right track.

    My cynical side is telling me OSU only wants the ability to steal more local talent away from UH and this I am disgusted with, but don’t get me wrong, I am NOT against local sons and daughters going for what is best for them, but sometimes the lure of “fame and fortune” in the “Conference of Champions” sometimes is NOT all that it’s advertised and vice-versa of course.

    So I am all for PAC-10 relationships, but I QUESTION the PAC-10’s motivation.

    I just got an email from Terry Brennan. I’m planning on playing golf with him, Vince Ferragamo, and Ray Carrasco (golf pro/British Masters Champion/Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open Champ) from an auction bid I won at Vince’s tournament. I had called Terry, and he said he knew both of them…small world…Vince used to work with Colt, and Terry said Ray has been a family friend for years. And the reason Margo thought of Terry (yeah, right, like I could figure this out) is because they are all in the South Bay.

    But, here’s the incredible part of the email. He said he and Betsy are traveling to Hawaii for the Sept. 25(?) San Jose State game. I wonder what the back story for that trip is??? TSAI-MEISTER, a little investigative reporting, sir???

    Actually my comment about stanford should have been addressed to Garret who said that UH should play Stanford every year because they are “beatable”. As for me I agree with you that UH should rotate and play different Pac-10 teams each year. I’d love to see UH play UCLA or Cal.

    Trust me, I follow Stanford football and know about the successes you mentioned in the previous post–I grad from there and went to a number of games, and several of my friends have gone to every game for decades. If you look back at my post, I emphasized that Stanford would be my choice because they are a Pac-10 team that does *not* recruit in Hawaii, which would mean that UH would get the benefit of playing a Pac-10 team while avoiding giving a Pac-10 team like Oregon State the big recruiting advantage of regular games in Hawaii to sell to recruits.

    I emphasized the recruiting aspect, even mentioned it twice. I did say that Stanford is “beatable”, and is there any argument about that? UH could beat Stanford this season and I believe that Mack will improve UH faster than Harbaugh will improve Stanford–Harbaugh has some limitations in recruiting due to having less “special admissions” than Cal and other Pac-10 schools (see the article I posted in the past day that gave the real numbers for this). I cannot imagine a year in the next 5+ years where Stanford wouldn’t be “beatable” for UH…that doesn’t mean that UH would win every game, but that UH would have a good chance to win each game.

    Hurricane Ike is shifting games around in Texas. I hope that Houston, Austin, and all of the rest of Texas aren’t hit badly by the hurricane!

    Hurricane Ike has already impacted the college football schedule, two days before its projected Saturday landfall between Corpus Christi and Galveston.

    Texas announced Wednesday night that it had postponed its Saturday nonconference game with Arkansas. The game was rescheduled for Sept. 27, which had been an off week for both teams.

    Even before Texas’ announcement, TCU had altered its start time for Saturday’s home game with Stanford from 6 p.m. to noon. And Houston moved its home game with Air Force to SMU’s Ford Stadium at 2:30 p.m.

    Baylor remains scheduled to host Washington State beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

    School officials were closely following forecasts for Hurricane Ike, with a decision not expected until this afternoon at the earliest. Baylor and Washington State do not share any common weekends off, which would complicate rescheduling.

    The latest track has Ike making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane. Several models have Ike moving east of Austin as a tropical storm and then continuing toward the Dallas area, bringing heavy rain.

    Ted Ginn, Jr. is exceptionally fast.

    Once he gets going, and starts sprinting in a straight line, he can outrun anyone.

    He has not shown (at this level) that he is especially quick or elusive, however.

    And so, even after his punt return touchdown in the preseason, it is reasonable to wonder whether he will ever be an elite punt returner in the NFL. Certainly, the Dolphins seem to be wondering. Again today, Tony Sparano reaffirmed his intention to get Davone Bess some work as a punt returner. Sparano really likes Bess.

    “I think Bess has an opportunity to make a guy miss right away,” Sparano said.

    This regime didn’t draft Ginn.

    It signed Bess as an undrafted free agent. That’s where a lot of teams find their punt and kick returners — on the street. Ginn cost the Dolphins much more.

    If Ginn isn’t returning all of the kicks, then the pressure increases on him to become a true No. 1 receiver by his third season in order to justify his draft position and salary cap slot.

    Also, while Sparano’s selection of Bess makes some sense on punt returns, it makes less on kickoff returns. Again, Ginn has blazing speed once he gets going, and he has more time to get going on a kickoff. It’s more important to have the elusive guy returning punts.

    Funny how Bess returned one kick and scared the heck out of the Jets so they squib kicked away from him the rest of the game!

    Bess, 5-feet-10 and 190 pounds from Oakland, Calif. and the Univ. of Hawaii, was back deep for all kickoffs against the Jets. He replaced Ginn, who was drafted No. 9 overall in 2007 by the previous regime largely because of his return abilities.

    Bess ran back the opening kick 21 yards, to the 27. The Jets had seen enough, because the Jets’ collection of kickers squib kicked away from him the rest of the game.

    “First punt to the guy, he made a guy miss,” Sparano said Wednesday. “I mean, the guy should have made the tackle. Once he makes him miss, it’s a 23-yard gain. He’s a strong kid that has the ability to make somebody miss.”

Stanford may be in the bottom half of the Pac-10 but as we saw with Washington last year no Pac-10 team is a pushover.     RE Ching/Cooke Field issues:

    There are clear state laws and administrative rules on the books dealing with challenges to contracts.

    Here is what has happened so far:

    The University of Hawai`i’s Procurement office issued an Invitation For Bids on July 1, 2008, the same day that FY 2008-2009 funds appropriated from the Legislature for the Field’s fix could be released. In fact, the Procurement Office had been working on the document several weeks prior to issuing it because the project was considered to be of the highest priority by the UH-M administration.

    Because of a number of inquiries concerning particular items in the IFB, the Procurement Office extended the bid deadline to Friday, July 25.

    That day, four bids were opened – I was present in the room – and the winning bid was $862,881 (RMY/Sports Turf Hawaii) and the second lowest bid was $$883,563 (CO-HA/Applied Sports Technology). The other two bids were over $1 million.

    The Procurement Office in consultation with the Facilities Office then evaluated the winning bid and found that it met the qualifications as specified in the IFB. The University announced the contract had been awarded to the lowest bidder on Wednesday, August 13.

    That triggered a seven-day challenge period starting Thursday, August 14, for all of the other bidders. Two challenges were filed by close-of-business on Wednesday, August 20, by CO-HA and the “fourth-lowest bidder,” Ching’s Nursery, Inc./Service Contracting.

    I then attended the University BOR’s meeting on Friday, August 22, at Windward Community College and received permission to address the BOR briefly on a non-apenda item. I asked them to stand firm behind the University of Hawai`i at Manoa on this matter and to do the right thing. Both Darolyn Lendio, UH’s General Counsel, and Virginia Hinshaw spoke after me and answered the Regents’ questions. Although nothing could be done because the item had not been properly noticed under state Sunshine Laws, the Regents did get an update on the issues.

    By the end of August, the University rejected the appeals and upheld the contract award. It was at this point that the two losing bidders then filed two separate appeals with the Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs.

    Also by the end of August, the Governor had released the funds for the project to the University of Hawai`i. Although I cannot vouch for this first-hand, I assume that the check went into UH’s Capital Account and it cleared with no problems. It should be earning a bit of interest while waiting for matters to be resolved.

    The first DCCA hearing is 9 am, Friday, September 26, with Ching’s Nursery. The second DCCA hearing is 1:30 pm, Wednesday, October 8, with CO-HA. The University of Hawai`i is the second party in each case, not RMY.

    Supporting documents by both parties in both hearings will be available for public inspection prior to the two hearings. I’ve left a message for the Hearings Officer to let me know when the documents will be available.

    Tom Mui and I will also be looking at the initial paperwork filed for the two DCCA preliminary appeal hearings held on September 9 and will report back here with what forms the substance of the two hearings on September 26 and October 8.

    Like it or not, the laws and administrative rules must be followed – and BHF2 is right – as long as an appeal is filed prior to the close of business on the specified date, then it’s good-2-go.

    HERE’S MY TAKE: There is nothing whatsoever to suggest that the University of Hawai`i – whether talking about the Chancellor and her subordinates, the President, or the Board of Regents – has in any way done anything to hinder, impede, show favoritism, or slow down the process. UH moved the bid through about as fast as it could have – and if there’d been no challenge, I suspect that the blessing ceremony would be in the planning process tor an end-of-September date.

    Yes, Sadowski was nominated by Lingle but he, along with hundreds of others sitting on boards & commissions throughout the state – including my professional colleagues for whom I testified at their hearings – was confirmed by the State Senate overwhelmingly dominated by the Democrats.

    PETITIONS, ETC: A well-worded petition supporting the University’s decison without any reference to losing bidders should be drafted and generated to be submitted to the Board of Regents at its next meeting on September 19 at Hawai‘i Community College.

    Please do NOT call the Hearings Officer per Tom Mui’s request yesterday.

    Tom is also making an inquiry to the Regents’ Executive Secretary as to how to make sure the item is on their September 19 Agenda.

    Remember, Sadowski is acting as a private individual on behalf of his private business in this matter and NOT as a member of the Contractors License Board.

    I know the frustration about these issues, but the laws & rules & regulations are there to protect us. Surely no one wants to go back to the days when contracts for public projects were awarded on the basis of friendships with decision-makers and not on their qualifications to perform the work.

    The only way to fast-track the project itself is for the University to give in and award the contract to CO-HA. But what message does that send to students, staff & faculty, and the larger community?

    Can Sadowski be shamed into backing off? That’s what BHF2 wants to do. Will it work? Beats me – but it won’t hurt to try as long as we don’t get physical or subject ourselves to slander/libel charges.

    BHF2’s suggestion at #152 and #159 about passing around a petition at the next couple of ballgames may work. I will check with Scott Chan, the Stadium Manager, to see if volunteers can walk around the parking lot before the game soliciting signatures. However, this will take about a dozen volunteers working the crowd between 2 and 5 pm.

    We also need to set up a table on campus to collect signatures as well.

    A dedicated website for gathering signatures on-line should also be a priority. Any volunteers to help with this? Suggested domain names? Am working on a couple of election-related websites and have some expertise in the area of on-line signatures, but more people taking part in the drive to get the Ching/Cooke Field fixed in a timely fashion makes it easier to be successful. Two or three people cannot do everything.

    The banner should have the domain name & address on it so people who who want more information can get it and sign the petition as well.

    Any ideas out there as to what else needs to be done?

    I agree that Stanford wouldn’t be a pushover–no Pac-10 team, with their resources and facilities, will be down forever. But they don’t recruit much in Hawaii and I can’t imagine UH would be overwhelmed against them. UH also has been getting a lot of recruits from the Bay Area, so a home-and-home with Stanford (or Cal) could really get that pipeline to flow.

    Thanks for clarification on your comments. Also there is a huge stanford contingent in Hawaii and many will attend games. Yes Stanford is always beatable, but personally playing stanford every year may excite the Stanford Fans in Hawaii, but the rest will get bored. I prefer a rotation of different Pac-10 teams each year.

He said he ate fast food crap during youth and highschool and never had any problems. He was a little concerned about his diet when going to play ball in college but it still worked for him. Then he got drafted by the NFL and thought he may have to change his diet, but since then hes still swears by his junk food diet and doing well.
