Graunke wins WAC honor
The weekend’s surprise hero, Tyler Graunke, is no surprise as the WAC’s Offensive Player of the Week. He went 13 of 20 for 218 yards in his second-half appearance in leading the Warriors to a 36-17 victory over Weber State.
Graunke said his last WAC award was for a one-half performance, too.
* * *
Graunke said his last name is pronounced Gron-kee, like Ron, and NOT Grun-kee, like run.
* * *
The Warriors had a light workout this morning. Quarterback coach Nick Rolovich said Inoke Funaki will remain as the No. 2 quarterback.
* * *
Defensive tackle Fale Laeli will not play in Saturday’s game against Oregon State. UH coach Greg McMackin said he expects Laeli to be ready for the Sept. 27 WAC opener against San Jose State.
* * *
On Thursday, Sept. 18, the Warriors will have a scrimmage featuring redshirts and developing players. It comes during the bye week.
* * *
A UH victory means one thing on Mondays: Omelets.
Chef Steven Omoto served the specially made orders during today’s training-table breakfast.
“I love omelets,” offensive lineman Ray Hisatake said. “I’m very simple: just onions ,cheese and tomatoes.”
Safety Keao Monteilh’s order is Portuguese sausage, mushrooms and cheese. “Can’t go wrong with cheddar,” he said.
Congrats Tyler!
good morning Stephen
hiya
i going back to da last post and drag ova my last comment.

RECOGNIZE!!!
good morning ST and Tsaikos,
now i can get back to cheering for the Warriors!
bhf2,
thought you was talking about ‘the beast’, haha. nah, j/k, Tyler can throw the rock. he made the ‘reads’ and hit his receivers.
let’s not go into it about the ‘refs’, honor grads from DDB UNIVERSITY (deaf, dumb, blind,) unreal……and the recalls……who were they calling, Stevie Wonder? if anyone thought that these refs were competent, let’s meet at the cc this week to discuss, haha.
have a good day Tsaikos, let’s go eat some Oregonians.
Talk about a storyline! From fourth-stringer last-chancer taking “punishment reps” to this? Hopefully this’ll contribute to one heck of a fired up Graunke on Saturday. He’s always been a scrappy “gamester” ;), hopefully he’s arrived for good this season.
graunke
graunke
hey stephen, is it “graw n key” or as liz chun says, “grunk e”
bulla, okay we forgive you now.
in Tyler we trust!
Awesome Possum Tyler!
Keep moving forward and don’t look back.
Let’s keep the WAC player of the week award for the OSU game too.
That will show our WAC foes Hawaii means business.
Congrats to Graunke.
Luck 13.
al,
mahalo for your grace….haha, now back to business. the O line needs some adjustments, i think.
however, i will defer to our in house coach, pride, what do you think?
great game, it’s over, move on and let’s get ready, it’s a travel week!
GO WARRIORS!
So this weekends WAC exposure –
Hawaii on FSN Western regional coverage. Most excellent.
Fresno St. on ESPN with Wisconsin
Nevada at Missouri on FSN
New Mexico St. @ Nebraska FSN.
Ouch for NMSU as this is their first game. Interesting how Nebraska is playing two WAC teams 2 weekends in a row.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Congratulations to Graunke!! I honestly thought that he was lost for the season.
Aloha Kakahiaka again!
In Tyler “we” have trusted…
GO WARRIORS!!!
Mav- ohh- Nebraska- sos material???
Bwahahaha!
Auwe for Tom Brady…
Well now we have Oregon at their place should be a tough one?

What a game on Saturday. After the first half I couldn’t believe what was happening. Thank God for Tyler. Looks like we will have a good season
with him at the helm. Can’t wait for SJSU game. Good luck Warriors at Oregon.
The Salt Lake Tribune’s article about Weber State after the UH game finally came out. Coach McBride praised UH’s DL for dominating in the second half, which prevented them from keeping UH’s offense off the field like they did in the first half.
Nice headline in the Tri-Cit7 Herald:
Another article on the Weber State game.
Looking on the bright side of things:
Our son is driving down from Seattle to the Oregon State game.
Any idea how many Hawaii fans will be there?
Suggestions for game day activities?
morning tsai-ko’s anoddah scorcher day again head for da nearest ac building and stay dea man sweating just standing here monitoring jpo and traffic. but have a good morning anyway
kekoa sent you one email check um and get back to me. hello to bhf2, enjoy your stay on oahu btw she told me u was her uncle bwhaaaaaaaaaaa. stretch was thinking like you but thought he could make a come back but slowly as back-up then latter starter (was projecting around time the WAC games began) 😉
repeat from yesterday—-after looking at the replay of yesterday game. wstate had some dline twist that continued to confused the oline blocking. this was the same problems happening during two a days. seem like during the 2nd half dey cleaned it up a little but still not sure about assignment when wstate went into their up alignment with guys bouncing around. imho oline need to have a call where they go into a zone blocking scheme instead of staying with their man blocking. 😕
morning every1
great job by the warriors in da 2nd half, gotta play MUCH MUCH better to have a shot in corvallis. what’s the status on leituli, LWJ, Libre, Fale? and what in da world r we gonna do 9/27 w/ 4 LB’s like that. yikes on coach cal/mack to have to make a decision like that one.
this da game where we get to see how much our tackles have improved. they gonna line em up wide and let em pin dere ears back. gotta keep em honest w/ da run and shovel. leavin for seattle/oregon 2morrow morning have a great day
I am very happy that Travis LaBoy is doing well with the Cardinals. He got a lot of praise in the offseason and had a great game yesterday.
Good Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!
Just popping in really quick to send out congratulations to Tyler. You deserved it. I hope that the team chemistry is solid and they carry this momentum with them on the road to Corvallis!
Shoutout to Frank…he’s missing me and the football.
Good to see everyone this past weekend. My kids just couldn’t believe that all those people were from the blog. It was awesome to show them what wonderful people you can meet in the most unexpected situations and places.
BBL! Esme and out!
I’m guessing that we’ll have Pac-10 refs at the Oregon State game…Pac-10 refs are getting widely criticized in the media for the BYU game and other mess ups. Scary that one of those blown calls ended up giving Oregon State a win.
ST –
You used the term “Academic Issues” in quotes several times in your article on Tyler Graunke today. Was their any sarcasm to that? Do you have any info you can share on what the real problem was? I’ve long felt that we don’t have the full story out in the open on what happened to Tyler. I don’t think it was simply a grade.
Please clarify. (if you can or care to)
man i feel real bad for ty willingham. bruddah loses aheartbreaker like that where the notorious nucklehead pac 10 refs rear their heads like that. man i hope we got neutral refs this weekend. then ty’s team gotta faceup against maybe the top o in da nation in oklahoma. oklahoma puts up 56 against a pretty fast d in cincy. oklahoma probably wins by 3 or 4 TD’s on da road. does ty survive through october. hope so.
and thanx kansas city D for giving my buffalo bills a shot this year 🙂
Good morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes….
Whew, what a weekend, I get tired just thinking about the events, food, and fun we had…I didn’t eat at all yesterday since I ate enough for two people (and all day on Saturday)….
UHFan808 – Talked to Rep. Takai already and he knows I have his glasses. He’s paid for them and I was supposed to give Stretch the money Saturday night but you know….Stretch sort of disappeared….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Stretch – Heard about the “taunting rule” soon to be known as the “Stretch Rule” throughout the NCAA….MWAHAHAHAHAHA…and I have the money for you from Rep. Takai.
Midori/UHFan/Ethel/Mr. and Mrs. A-House – Thanks for letting me sit next to you guys at the game. I hope I was a good boy and didn’t get too emotional during that first half of play….
al – Tell your boy, yes, I am half pake/half other stuff….I only speak pidgin, for the most part, when I’m at those sort of events….you know, have to know when to turn it on and turn it off….I will let him know though at the next outing.
KK – thanks for going early as well as Ralph. Setting up the fire and other things earlier really made a difference time-wise. We need to do that at every tailgate.
DPK – I think I saw Barney at the Tsaikogate…he was wearing a purple T-shirt. Did you notice him? MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
Good times this weekend and even better times over the coming weeks.
woooo da ac is sooo gooood now
well play nice now going cool down and maybe change my shirt. have a good one
esme whoooooooooosh
Congratulations to Tyler.
Imagine what happens when he plays a full game!
Now the receivers need to continue to improve. After all, there’s an All-WAC Unit Award they have to defend.
Have a great day erryboddy! 😀
Garret-
Betcha our coaches are telling the guys, When you score and the ball is in your hands, Right away give the ball to the ref nicely and say, “Here you go sir”. Then walk away cordially, and jump up and down when you get to the sidelines.
The No Fun Zebra Police will be in force. haha
Okay gang, just a reminder. The TV Gate for the next away game, which will be broadcast at 10:00 a.m., has been scheduled. So, for all you local fans who are not able to join Stretch and his merry band on the road to Corvalis, here are the details:
UH vs. OSU
Saturday, September 13, 2008
10:00 a.m.
Ige’s Restaurant and 19th Puka
98-761 Oihana Pl
Aiea, HI 96701
(808) 486-3500
They will open at 9:30 a.m. I will get there a little earlier because they do not take reservations no matter how big your party is. I would appreciate it if a couple people could get there early as well so we can save a big enough area for all who are attending.
According to Ige’s, they will serve some breakfast stuff, but will have mostly lunch and pupus. It is also being sponsored by Bud Light so I am assuming Bud Light girls will be there and they may have some specials (KK, that’s right up your alley). There will also be a contest for the Ultimate Warrior Fan. Per Ige’s, “Three lucky winners will receive tickets for the 2009 UH vs. UNLV game. The theme is the Ultimate Warrior Fan so come dressed to impress and unleash your inner Ultimate Warrior.” Not sure what that’s all about but I’ll put it out there.
Anyway, if you plan on coming to the event, please RSVP me at jgo8464822@aol.com so that we can save enough seats. People are always welcomed to just stop by but it would be good if we had a rough estimate of the number attending so that enough room can be made.
Thanks.

If you haven’t read Peter King today, in his Ten Things I Think I Think section of his column Monday Morning Quarterback
Congrats again to Tyler and the rest of the Warriors!!!!
Like Stretch, I truly believed that TG was lost for the season. But, I’m glad that I was wrong and that he appears to have manned up and taken the team to another level. Good job.
KK – agree with your assessment of the O-line, although protecting a mobile/scrambling QB is more difficult than one who sits and steps up in the pocket. Just MHO.
Congrats to Tyler!
al: According to UH, it’s pronounced “grawn-kee.”
Gotta run already, laters!
Good odds we be calling Tyler “Grawn-King” soon.
Yada, yada, yada. All of this talk about Tyler Graunke. I just won’t have any of it. Tyler is too short. If i were to go out with heels and we were to slow dance, Tyler would just be way too short. Brent Rausch is our man.
Inoke is kind of cute but he is still a litle too short for me. Greg Alexander quite frankly is just too scary looking, he doesn’t smile. Now Rausch is a hunk. I’m 6’2″ 280 lbs. BBW. I need a man who is quite tall. Rausch is tall and very cute. When you select a quarterback, you need to pick the one that looks best on television during interviews. Rausch is definitely that man. The coaches need to get it together
Pomai: 31-30 UH of course!!
In the course of 2 weeks, 4 starting quarterbacks. Crazy start to the season. Time to settle in and start playing w/consistency.
Hey all you “Johnny come lately fans”, don’t boo the boys when things get rough. Just think if it were your son out there. Go Warriors.
for those of you headed to Corvallis for the Oregon St game, there’s another Sportshawaii/Islandsportsmedia.com tailgate planned on gameday.

there should be a big contingent of hawaii fans there, but its always good to have a place to congregate and rally the troops, hang out, and then head to the stadium.
Good Morning Everybody!
The Graunke is unleashed. There is no turning back now. Let’s just keep that WAC award for next week, as was suggested above. Great game for UH, first of many to come this season. Yeeehaw!
Can we all agree that special teams needs some work this week?
Coach Mack ~ Put the word “Contain” on the top of the chalk board please. Underline the words “Hot Pursuit & Tackle!”…and I mean TACKLE like they stole sumthin’ – not that arm *tickle* chit!
Whatever zone assignments given, if they can work on these basic fundamentals, it should help them improve any coverage scheme.
Taking off my lanyard & whistle and putting the clip board down, and quietly exiting the lecture hall…
Is that a woman pretending to be me?
James! Bud Light girls?! That’s better than COFFEE!
Soooo, um Pride.
How long have you been having these BBW thoughts? What if we put Graunke in some platform disco shoes? Would that work for ya?
Kekoa – With regard to special teams, they had there moments. However, I still see the little things like maintaining lane assignments and having the discipline to stay home that could cost us in future games. Also, need more discipline in not “smacking” the punt return man before he gets the ball, that was just plain stupid, and could cost us more than just a penalty if it happens again.
They had their bright spots though and I am sure the coaches will be working the special teams this week.
GO WARRIORS!!!
Howzit Tsaikos!
Was fun tailgating and meeting more of you- Mahalos. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season now that our QB is set- Tyler was on fire. Look for an appearance of the Tsaiko Poke Bowl coming soon. Gotta get some work done now so back to lurking…
I knew that wasn’t you prideperiod….You’re not a BBW…mwahahahahaha
Ogre…if you only saw the Heineken Girls that Koakane took pictures of the other week you’d think you were in heaven…MWAHAHAHAHA
JJ – I agree, Pride is not BBW, he is BBB – Big, Bald & Beautiful (so he thinks).
Stretch…Well, I have it on good authority that Koa-mahu likes them Big, Bald, and Beautiful…..
…and KK, I am not Koa-mahu….
(Jesse) James-
If ya drink enough Heinekens, doesn’t EVERY girl start to look like a Heineken girl? 😉
No forget Na Koa lunch today.
Hey! Be nice you guys! We need to be supportive of Pride during this time of confusion. I’m sure this will all pass.
Congratulations to Graunke!
Good morning everyone. Back at work today…almost didn’t get up, even after putting in a full 8 hours awake yesterday (0930-1300 and 1830-2300). 🙁
(Note to self: try to schedule Monday off after a home Tsaiko-Gate, game, and post-game)
Stephen is up on his pop culture.
using Tila Tequila in today’s article… hehe.
James, you are the authority on that Koa-mahu issue.
Tyler’s been here so long, I thought that he was a coach already. It’s hard to believe that Tyler was here when Timmy Chang was the starting quarterback. I still remember when Graunke was the starting quarterback against USC, and Matt Leinart was pitching the ball to Lendale White and Reggie Bush. Graunke is what is known as an ‘elder statesman’. A man of wisdom and experience.
UH 37 OSU 14
Glad I never call TG one lolo (on da blog, anyway).
Kid becoming a man before our collective eyes.
But.
No forget the academics or no can play in the bowl game.
Morning Tsaikos
Congrats Tyler!
You came out like Superman but with an H on your chest.
Can’t wait fot he SJSU Game.
Go Warriors!
talking about r. bush, any1 catch that move he made on his TD last nite. just plain sick, not fair inda open field.
for da scores, go w/ graunke 36-32
and just for fun national semifinal #1 — ‘SC 31- OSU 10
🙂
dat waznt da real Pride. Da buggah whey at leeest 3 bills. 280 pounds iz lik wun homey + wun jojo. 3 bills+ iz like wun al ‘n Esme.
Auryte!
Congrats to Tyler. He’s letting his play on the field do all his talking. I still feel a little bad for GA and BR since the receivers really let them down in the Fla game. However, it’s not the receivers fault for 4 INTS. BTW, TG’s QB rating is a chart busting 206.1

First of all:
A BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE FIRST COUPLE OF THE WARRIOR BEAT ST AND WENA!!!
Also, a BIG “MAHALO” to everyone at this weekend’s first T-gate of 2008. As with any tsaiko-related function, it is ONLY possible through the efforts of everyone attending!!!
I don’t know if anyone noticed, but the student section (expanded area in the North end zone next to the band) was standing throughout the whole game and the ENTIRE student section kept things lively, although through odd times, STILL they kept things lively and they SHOULD be commended for that.
Going to a few volleyball matches and this weekends home opener, it seems that the level of student participation has increased and while it’s not a complete improvement, any improvement considering past trends should be welcomed.
Also, they the band moved closer down to the field and I was disappointed that I couldn’t hear “Hawaii Five O” from our section as the overwhelming crowd noise was too loud. Oddly enough I missed the “E’O” chants over the speakers on 3rd down, but maybe the band will come up with something to replace this.
As for the “miscues” on the band still playing while the team was on offense and Vili pumping up the crowd while the team was on offense as well, I remember that both instances occurred and started during the TV timeouts and they spilled over into the start of the play. It’s the first game and EVERYTHING in production seemed screwy. It should be fine by the SJSU game.
Only thing is, I hope they plan to stretch out the band or at least mic them up so that “Hawaii Five O” could be heard while they come out. I can guarantee that 60% of the stadium could not hear it at all.
so brashton gonna stay at MLB or r we moving Sol back. kinda like havinga bigger MLB but hard to go against Sol there as well. hope blaze is 100% ready come 9/27, don’t wanna let it linger. hope he got his schoolwork on par as well, hate to have this year be his last.
any1 know what da problem was with the scoreboard/time clock etc this weekend? nice 2 see a rather big crowd for a D1AA game. 4got to wait to see if they sang da alma mater still. did they?
Kazz…agree with you about the students showing more pride and excitement. I was also pleased with the turnout in general. Ferd’s article mentioned something like 36,000 were in attendance. Pretty good all things considering. WE need to up that for the SJSU game. First WAC game. First defense of our WAC Championship. Tomey back in Aloha Stadium. Should be a good one.
GO WARRIORS!!!
Also wanted to ask anyone here. Did anyone notice the snaps on the field goals appeared to be off and Kelley’s kicks seemed to “wobble” rather than be “end over end”? Maybe I was just seeing things from my vantage point but that’s what it looked like to me.
wish a speedy recover to vince manuwai, too bad for him. that’s why football not easy to predict at the start of da year, 2 many injuries…
dpc…I actually like the bigger guys in the middle so I like having Brashton there. I love Sol but think that his speed is better suited to the outside to provide containment. But heck, I’m not a coach soooo….just my opinion.
(j)j
da ultimate test for sol (if he stays on da outside) will come 10/17 in boise, i guess. you know someting hasn’t looked right w/ any of kelly’s field goals these first 2 games. the 2 this game, and the 2 last game (penalty nullified first one) even the one that counted for 3 pts something still never look right. can’t complain at all bout his kickoffs but we gotta have kelly get back to normal starting this week. thought that was the best i ever seen grasso punt so thats a plus
Pride,
someone doing your alter ego? i don’t know, but i was the original BBB in this group….just for clarity…..haha
Service unit looks “shakey”. Kelly, Grasso, and Ingram are the leaders during PATs and FGs. However, maybe it’s just me but it looks like there is some “flinching” during these times as a defender is a “hair” away from blocking these attempts.
Solidify the outside blockers on PATs and FGs and let Ingram, Grasso, and Kelly flow.
dpc – yes they did do the alma mater. We always stay for that…wasn’t sure if it would happen, but the band and dancers were ready no matter what. I like this tradition. No ha’a afterwards though.
Ok. SOMEBODY had to do this. I’m sure that Kazz is workin’ on his own version as we speak. So here goes nothin, with apologies to the Chiffons and sung to the tune of “My Boyfriend’s Back”:
“The Graunke’s Back”
[Spoken:]
He couldn’t play and we all felt down
But he had to do things right
And now he’s done what he had to do
Our opponents had better think twice…
The Graunke’s back and there’s gonna be trouble
(Hey-la-day-la The Graunke’s back)
Any DB see him comin’, better cut out on the double
(Hey-la-day-la The Graunke’s back)
When he takes the snap he knows just what to do
(Hey-la-day-la The Graunke’s back)
So look out Oregon he’s comin’ after you
(Hey-la-day-la The Graunke’s back)
(Hey, just try to stop his passin’)
(Yeah, he’ll have that defense gassin’)
He’s our QB now and he’s the one we’re backin’
(Hey-la-day-la The Graunke’s’ back)
So look out world, The Warriors are attackin’.
(Hey-la-day-la The Graunke’s back)
In weeks to come he’s gonna be a sensation
(Hey-la-day-la The Graunke’s back)
So raise a cheer across the Warrior Nation
(Hey-la-day-la The Graunke’s back)
(Hey you all know what I’m sayin’!)
(Now you’re gonna see some playin!)
(The other teams have got to realize)
(Wah-ooo, wah-ooo)
(They feel big now; he’ll cut them down to size)
(Wah-ooo, wait and see)
The Graunke’s back he’s gonna save our reputation
(Hey-la-day-la The Graunke’s back)
So raise a cheer across the Warrior Nation
(Hey-la, hey-la, The Graunke’s back)
🙂 🙂 🙂
DPK – Little too much time on your hands??? J/K…very clever.
DPK – Well, you can’t claim writer’s block now. hehehe
Rob25
Nice to have met you at the T-gate. Sorry I didn’t get to meet your children. Who knows I might need some “protection” from Homey some day…. 🙂
Oregon State Game
Momentum.
While our offense has looked anemic for a game and a half, we have the momentum.
We have a match up of a rebuilding offense (UH) and a rebuilding front seven on defense (OSU). With Kia returning and hopefully Letuli as well, AhSoon returning to his LG spot, I expect our o-line to do better than what they did against Florida (even though I think they did fairly well against Florida).
Graunke is now back and while he seemed rusty a few times, he showed that this offense can still be effective with the personel we now have.
2nd half vs Weber State was the “pardon from the Governor”.
Game at Oregon State will be how “you spend life after being released from death row”.
Rich-
it started out as warm up excersize for the “real” writin and took on a life of it’s own… I’m workin’ on that “real” writin’ right now. 🙂
No Rob, I can’t. Maybe a lil embarrassed. 😳
Yes Bulla, you are THE original BBB.
Ever since the haka was done away with and the ha’a was crafted, they never did it after the games.
BTW, just a show of hands…
Where were you all sitting and could you hear “Hawaii Five O” being played as the team ran out?
How about some Tsai-Ko shirts like… “Tsai-Kos eat Beaver for Breakfast”? ha ha ha…
Kazz,
South end zone. No.
Kazz,
Yellow section JJ…very faint. But then I’m a little hard of hearing!
Nice try “homey”.
DPK – who are the Chiffons? Cake makers? Also, I haven’t tried the brand beer Sweetie brought but what are the qualities of the beer?
Happy belated birthday to the Birthday Couple!
A-Joe – I called Wreck and he said I owe him a new interior. I’ll probably go to the junkyard and see what I can get. 😆
OK…who’s messing with the blog now!!!
:lol
For a moment, the formatting was all crazy
Pride. and prideperiod – That was a good one! But alas, I don’t think that certain person will get it.
Did Ginslack(sp?) start the game? Ah Soon moved to tackle and Ginslack was supposed to be the guard. In the 2nd half, I noticed Ieru at left guard. When did that happen?
Homey,
It’s a good Mexican beer and you can get it on sale sometimes. Sweety really enjoys it.
Kazz – Section F, I could hear it but no can hear the ref to good when he is trying to explain the penalties. The funny part was when they were taking their sweet time trying to figure out if Graunke’s “fumble” was a forward pass and the Warrior Fan was listening in on the ref’s phone conversation. Too bad you couldn’t see that on the big screen.
Now, we need something written for the D to the tune of “Bad to the Bone” by George Thorogood.
On the day we were born, the nurses all gathered ’round
And they gazed in wide wonder, at the beasts they had found
The head nurse spoke up, and she said leave them all alone
She could tell right away, that we were bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone
We broke a thousand bones, before we met you
We’ll break a thousand more chump, before we’re through
We wanna be yournightmare, yours and yours alone
We’re here to tell ya honey, that we’re bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone
We’ll make every team fear, We’ll make a good team steal
We’ll make another team blush, and make a young team squeal
We wanna be your nightmare, yours and yours alone
We’re here to tell ya chumps, that we’re bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone
Kazz – south end zone level 4 sec. A. Barely, even some of the pregame music they did sounded faint.
How does the injury situation look like for Sat.?
Rich-
LMAO! 😆
Ok Kazz, we’ll be needing one for the cheerleaders. What ya got for us?
DPK – Okay, so what about the beer qualities? Taste, smell, color, malty, strong hops smell and flavor, bitter, frothy, heavy taste, light taste, full-bodied, ale taste, green bottle taste, flat taste, refreshing, aftertaste…???
homey – for a second there I thought you included your booking number…
Additional comments on one of yesterday’s topics:
We all know not to cheer when a player gets injured; we all know to cheer when he gets up. But, for those of you that are still confused about when and when not to cheer during a football game, here are some basics:
1. The purpose of cheering is threefold: to show your team support…through good AND bad; to INTIMIDATE the opponent; and to feel involved in the game.
2. Stand and cheer as loud as you can when your team takes the field. You go to the game to see it, be in the stadium to welcome your team. Get them fired up!
3. DO NOT boo the other team when they enter the stadium and DO NOT boo your own team! Keep it for the officials or at home when you’re watching the replay. Players make mistakes and remember, these are still someone’s kids. Booing is just plain rude.
4. Cheer appropriately on offense. Clapping and cheering for positive yardage is fine; yelling for a touchdown, even better. But, BE QUIET when the offense is lined up. At this point, they are trying to hear the audible play that the quarterback is calling. Do not make it more difficult for them by making noise and for goodness sake, DO NOT start the wave when we have the ball!
5. When your team is on defense, MAKE NOISE! As much as you can!!! We want to hinder the opposing team’s play calling. We want to make them run the wrong play or get a false start penalty. We want to cause them to mess up.
6. Do NOT become a complacent fan. If your team is struggling, be that extra player that picks them up and motivates them to continue. Keep cheering them on, no matter what!
7. Stay until the clock reads triple-zero. Where do you have to go, to sit in the parking lot? Wouldn’t you rather be sitting in your stadium seat? The Sugar Bowl was a perfect example of the positive side of this…the team loved it and so did the fans. We stayed, we sang and we supported the team even in a blowout. It was a chicken-skin moment. You leave early, you never know what you might miss….I am so glad I stayed!
Tsaikos: please feel free to add to the list so that ST can one day put an article together for all UH fans.
GO WARRIORS!
afternoon gang!
Kazz – not sure how it sounded on the ppv either since it was kinda noisy on the ship, and i also missed the early part of the re-broadcast, sounds like they gotta mic up the band next time
I’d write a some lyrics but I don’t know the words to Hawaii 5-0.
Classic Homeyism…too funny!
Rich – Actually, that’s my password for every account I have! Good to see your name on the blog more often! By chance or choice are you planning on attending an Oahu t-gate this season?
Homey-
That accident I had years ago has pretty much left me with no sense of smell and very little sense of taste. So honestly, I can’t tell ya. You’d have to ask Sweety, or better yet, buy six pack of it yourself and test it thoroughly. 😉

http://www.gaminglawmasters.com/casinolawyer/clv3n1wo07/clv3n1wo79-raisingbar.htm
I have way too much time on my hands today.
Why boo the players? They are just playing the game. I say boo the refs when they make stupid calls. Just kidding refs!
homey – i think goes something like “da da da da da daaaa da da da da da “
Boo the Republicans. Or not.
Thank you KonaGirl!
duffer – I see you hang out with the bigwigs! But then again when I heard who they were I had to go look in the Cabana parking lot to see if they brought a Budweiser Beer party 18-wheeler.
wooo jojo, how you when post at the same time?
i heard that you like yelling at the refs
Note to self…”ya tink DPK would do me a favor and ask Sweety for me but no, he gives some injury excuse and tells me to go buy my own beer and figure it myself…end note”
Homey – I’d like to attend a TG, but I’m on the lookout for a smallish muscular fellow that wanted to roll me in the parking lot at Gengi. Perhaps you can help me find him…..
Loa – Okay, I’ll try…here goes the first line, tell me what you think:
“Wa wa wa waa waaa waa wa wa Warriors”
duffer,
While they in the mood (and the checkbook is still open) try see if they like the sound of “Bill Boyd Field” at Aloha Stadium. 🙂
KonaGirl:
I Booed the team Saturday. I Boo when I’m not happy with what I’m seeing. As the team left the field for halftime, we were trailing 17-7 to an FCS team. Thats unacceptable for a program of our stature/level. What was even more unacceptable was the way the clock was handled over the final minute of the half. The final play was whistled dead with 15 seconds and Hawaii near midfield. We never called a TO or got another play off. The coaching staff should know better. As a fan, the only outlet I have to express my displeasure is to boo.
That said, I boo because I care! I’m as big a fan as anyone but I don’t choose to go “yeah, you guys are great I’m here for you… blah blah blah”. I’m not that fan. I cheer great plays, I scream my head off for the defense on 3rd downs and I boo when I see something that our team shouldn’t let happen.
I was thrilled with the comeback and know that Coach Mack, the other coaches and the team will learn from what happened during the first half and move on. I’ve not been a Graunke fan but the guy came through and there’s no doubt he has talent and the most QB experience on the team.
Just my two cents… Go Warriors!
Rich – hahaha! I think you are looking for Kazz.
Homey,
You mean al?????
Funny thing is, they are just like any of us. I don’t even know their “titles” are at work. Very down to Earth guys. Most of them started as dealers, worked their way up the ladder. They never forgot where they came from.
hoooo Loa, you missed it on Friday when me and Kira posted at the same time and the exact same thing! Kinda spooky, you know…
yup, and yelling at the refs are the best thing for entertainment. Not the same when you yell at the cops, though.
homey,
Hmmmm…sounds a little whiney
Rich – did he have tatoos on both arms?
homey-
If it’s that big of a deal, I’ll make sure to buy you a can of Tecate next time I see you. Rich, man of the world that you are, I’m sure you’ve had a Tecate before. Tell homey what it’s like. He’s obsessin again.
Not sure, but the forearms were larger than lamb shanks…lol
Jon,
Thanks for your honesty and your passion.
Rich,
Was the guy threatening you with custom-made chopsticks?
homey,
Maybe you can start with a smaller project (no pun intended…well, kinda not). How about the bridge part of Co-ed?
Homey – i like it
jojo – coulda used your yelling yesterday, da ref missed a pk call
Gron-kee?
Like RonCo?
Always thought the big syringe thing for stuffing hams and roasts and stuff was kinda gross. 🙁
small kine game observations:
1. need to defend the slant patterns better
2. need to get o-line blocking assignments tune-up
3. nice D adjustments for 2nd half
4. nice disguising DB coverages in 2nd half
5. nice LB blitzes
6. nice recognizing open seams by the receivers
7. officials need to get their act together when reviewing plays
8. decent running game. Rego was tough out there!
9. clean up some special teams play
10. 40 second clock sucks.
11. good job coaches
12. Funaki did good
13. Graunke was the man
14. saw Kekoa and Pops walking up the stairs
15. many contestants don’t know how to make a good paper airplane
Jon:
I understand the frustration and you are welcome to your opinion on boo’ing…I’d rather stick with mine.
Remember too, they don’t get paid to play. I would like to think that you were booing the paid people on the field…coaches, etc. and not really booing the players. How would you like it if you got boo’d for your mishaps?
Aloha…
Tecate – best consumed with a little salt & lime. (Note: Tailgate Tip # 328)
Homey, you my HERO!
DPK – never mind. I’ll just ask my Mexican friend, Pepito.
d1 – I don’t know co-ed.
Rich – okay, that answers it for me. If you need to add anything to beer to enhance it’s taste then I’ll stick to the green bottles or Guinness. Next t-gate I will try Steinlager Pure.
duffer – I bet you wish you were a paper airplane contestant!
homey,
re:#1. gotta make sure the front 7 can stop the run w/out Safety run support. CB’s can jump those slants but if no mo help on top – aiyah 😯
#2. agreed. as simple as it is, maybe Koakane is right. Zone ’em for now.
#3 thru #5. yep, yep, yep. Also having the threat of an offense that looks like it can strike quick forces the opposition to alter their play-calling.
#6. They gotta start doing that from the 1st series.
#7. wishful thinking
#8. I already apologized to #22 on the blog for past assessments; hope he keeps it up!
#9. Some???
#10. Yeah but #7 kinda balances it out, eh. Game still takes the same amount of time to finish 🙂
#11. Kinda same as #6. Gotta have ’em ready from the opening KO.
#12. I hope he can remember the stuff he did that was good. Really.
#13. Of course.
#14. Bless them both.
#15. Is it in the rules that you gotta use the whole sheet of paper?
(J)J – Count me in for Saturday! I’ll see if I can somehow bribe the beach goers into going on Sunday so I can be there early and save half the room.
Rego did look good, especially on that last series. Are Farmer and Heun gonna be available this wek?
homey,
click da name
Bulla and the Mrs are going to become the next Rockefeller’s
wek=week
duffer,
Wow, now that he’s an OWNER. I wouldn’t want to be the poor tourist who has to explain to Bulla how I let the water overflow the bathtub!
d1
Was in the odda pepa, couldn’t provide a link. SMU’d!
d1 –
re #1 I agree about stopping the run but if the corners are as good as advertised then they should have played in your face mano a mano coverage.
#10 – it seems there is less plays using this 40 second clock method.
#15 – If you do use the whole sheet then at least give your airplane some front end weight. I must admit that was hilarious!
duffer,
There’s anoddah pepa?
heheheh
d1 – okay, I saw the tube vid. Now I understand the need for lyrics in the bridgework.
homey,
#10 Would the NCAA consider a pro rata rebate of the price of admission based on the number of fewer plays?
#15 I noticed that several fans in the Yellow sections are able to produce some good quality planes!
Homey, I saw that on the big screen. It was awesome.
NauPauLunChauWah!
hmmmmm, I wonder if Bulla and Queen Jaegar are vested?
KonaGirl,
Excellent list! One thing I would add is that many recruits that UH is interested in attend UH’s home games. Booing makes a really bad impression on recruits and can cost the team a player they desperately need for the future! So, not only can booing hurt the morale of the current team, it can hurt future UH teams!
Having the fans stay until the end and support the team (like it seemed all of the Hawaii fans did at the Sugar Bowl) can impress recruits with the support from the fans and have a positive effect on recruiting.
I’ve read countless recruiting stories where a recruit is interviewed after making his decision and he cites the fan support, attendance at the game or games he saw, and the atmosphere (hurt by booing!) at the games as a major factor in his decision.
Homey,
And this comes from experience?
Me and A-House are signing up next year.
d1shima,
The NCAA said that the number of plays would NOT be affected by the new rules, and that they would magically shorten the games while keeping the same number of plays. However, the facts are being recorded by various websites and there *are* less plays per game now than last year. Too bad no refund for fans…but that refund would have to come from UH and UH needs the money!
Is it just me, or was there a TON of commercials at the game?
Homey…good observations. Hopefully, they will continue to improve on a week to week basis. Part of the Ds problem in the first half was a little bit of an attitude issue I think. They underestimated Weber State a bit and Weber State is a good team. Even Sol said as much last night when he said that he felt the D didn’t bring their A game in the first half because they felt that Weber wasn’t as good as they were….but hey, live and learn. Treat every game as if it was a national title game.
Got you down. Bring the rugrats….surf is gonna be dropping anyway….not like yesterday and today…man, second reef off of Sand Island was looking good this morning…..
Kazz – Now if they make the screen bigger…
oops, forgot one more game observation
16. Local boys from Weber St represented! The Beast more than held his own and played an inspired game. Higgins showed he belongs. He was very poised and displayed the local competitiveness throughout the game. Good job men!
Just back from Na Koa Luncheon. Tsaikos in attendance: ST, Jason myki, sj, bhf2, chawan_cut, RK, Stretch. Big winner at Stretch’s table got the helmet. Jason can explain the mathematical formula that Mack used to go for the 2 point conversion. 🙂 For those who can make it, the lunch is where you hear at lot of “What you hear stays in the room.” or “Not for publication” tidbits. Go Warriors ❗
Anybody see the guy that got arrested when he almost hit a lot attendant at the gate? About 10 officers on motorcycles converged on his car at the lower lot. He was in handcuffs and had clearly peed in his pants.
POPO…was that right after the game? I was walking back to the T-gate to get my car and saw a lot of “Flashing Blue Lights” in the lower lot….and that wasn’t a K-Mart sale……
Thanks.
re: Fans
A lot of fans were leaving early after UH went up 36-17. Even when they were up 29-17 you could see people heading up the stairs. I think the rain had a factor in fans wanting to leave early….not to mention the traffic.
Here’s a link to the 40 second clock
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2008-09-02-rules-time_N.htm
duffer – c’mon, small keed time we nevah had xbox, wii, playstation, etc. All we had was folder paper to make airplanes and papaya leaves to smoke.
J-Dog – They could’ve shown plenty commercials during the time the refs were reviewing the plays with the man in the booth. They spent so much time on the phone I thought the ref was going to make like Howie Mandel and tell the coach’s “Deal or no Deal”.
(J)J – New swell this weekend?
J-James,
nope, was before the game. Police chased him quite a distance in from the entrance he tried to bypass without paying.
Homey, you had paper to fold?
Another link,
http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/x1103452918/Faster-play-clock-takes-away-from-college-football
Homey…haven’t heard. Is there a new swell this weekend???
For the TV Viewing…
**Lurkers/New Posters**
DON’T BE AFRAID TO COME OUT AND STOP BY
Like we’ve said before, it’s all fun. Many lurkers and new posters have recently come out to our events and it seems like they’ve had a good time. It only takes one outing and pretty much, people will be hooked. Look at Jack Flash…already bringing TVs to the tailgates….
We don’t bite…with the exception of DPK who may bite…MWAHAHAHAHAHA
I think on several occassions, 2 commercials would be playing at once! One on the big screen, and another commercial for something unrelated over the loud speaker.
Talk about genius marketing! Hit the fans with multiple commercials.
I noticed #74 Ieru got a lot of playing time. Did the starter get hurt? Or was it a performance-related substitution?
Speaking of video games…
What is the deal with all the replays of plays on the Bumbuchatron using NCAA 2009 Football Clips instead of the actual plays???
A few times they did both, but for the most part it looked like only simulated NCAA 2009 Football clips.
I had children faster than it took those refs to review that play! I like booing the refs. They are paid and should be getting the calls right. By the time the made the obvious decision…the players muscles had cooled down and you take away the timing of the rhythm and the momentum the team had established.
Was it me or did this group of refs seem like they were flag-happy?
Kazz – I sit in the N endzone and could barely hear the band play and I was waiting for it. I do sort of miss the canned music during the game. Like the idea of Hawaii 5-0 and the introductions. It would personalize some of the players with the fans and have more of a bonding element to it.
I like booing the refs. They are paid and should be getting the calls right.
Oops, I was repeating myself! Sorry, but I booed them because they were taking so long. That ruined my timing as a fan. Had to stop cheering and sit down.
There’s more,
http://msnbc2.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=1184&CID=844866
J-Dog – From the looks of it I would say it was performance related and getting fresh bodies in there for the experience.
Kazz – That’s what happens when you serve beer in the replay booth.
Rob25 – Oh flag-happy…I thought you wrote something else and I was gonna have to get all politically correct on you. So you were the one casting the shadow on the big screen!
A couple of anecdotes about after the game… LizKauai, Peaches and I stopped to rest at Genji enroute to ST’s late birthday meet. Nabeyaki udon stop for Liz and a couple of songs. Seemed better than sitting at the Cabana with locked rerstrooms and empty ice chests–even Koakane’s ice chest was down to 2-3 brown bottles….
Tina sat with us to rest and noted the earlier evening was very busy with the regulars watching the game…but no Tsai-kos (Tina would recognize most by now). Had to explain that most Tsai-kos have tickets to the game and we were tailgating.
When they heard we were Tsai-kos and just came from the game, some guys on the barstools turned around to “discuss” aspects of the game–and Liz explained patiently 🙂 Later, Liz started singing — which confirmed to everyone that in a karaoke & sports bar, Liz is in another league. 😆 Bar stool guys never turned around again.
We sang “Happy Birthday” to ST at our next midnight restaurant stop. I noticed it sounded really good–then realized everyone there was a Karoke Call regular 🙂
duffer – I can see where an efficient team can get in more plays under the new system and teams that use most of the 40 seconds will get less plays.
duffer,
haha, nice mention of our ESOP Plan for employees in the paper. very generous gesture from our owners Mike and Aida Paulin….unprecedented in the hotel industry. we have a BIG announcement meeting this Wednesday, and rumor has it that a big & bald guy will be saying a few words and offering a blessing, imagine that.
you guyz don’t miss anything yeah? haha
Kazz,
I hope UH is getting paid to show those lame EA sports replays, cuz it’s really annoying. Also, I think the other team in those replays was Utah State. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions don’t have 1-AA teams.
Forced to imagine DPK singing “My Boyfriend’s Back:” fried my brain and made me fall out of my chair. It was so harrowing that I had to step out of my lurker status and say…
DPK… auwe! I didn’t know you were …. you know.. you stay.. you know… da…kine….!
Aigoo… aysoos…. aiyahhh… auwe… masaka…
…
((still recovering from my Saturday’s 1st half tantrum)
Duffer – It was nice to meet you this Saturday. Thanks for hosting our big pals from the other side of the pond. I hope to get to see you more often at other events.
Sorry I didn’t introduce my children to you. They were getting a little bored with all of the older people and restless…you know they go through withdrawls when they don’t have access the either the internet or a video game console.
ST – Would you know what time of the day the scrimmage will be held?
congrats to Graunke. scary first half though.
oregon v. hawaii prediction
42 – 13
GO WARRIORS!!
oh yeah…my prediction 21 – 20 UH….
GO WARRIORS!!!
Bulla and Pride,
My neighbor wants to know what BBB means.
She has an inquiring mind.
And she said that Greg Alexander is still the best looking because he looks hubby.
hmmm. interesting how some lurk about. do you think she is lurking?
HI madeinhawaii!
al – of course she does. her IP address is noted.
jojo – got ige’s? What you doing Wednesday around noon-ish?
Eh, Tina, das you?
I tink BBB means Big, Beautiful, and Bashful….I going let sistah know. Hopefully, she can forgive da guys on dis blog. Just haf to get da kine extra skin when on dis ting…deez guys crazee.
jojo?
do you know a jojo?
i think i used to…..
Yeah jojo…you guys coming to Ige’s???
gigi’s neighbors lurk?
I think we may be able to catch the second half. Someone got futbol.
What’s Wednesday? Calamari Wednesday?
Rob25,
I think that booing refs is fine…in fact, I’ve seen cases where refs (especially in basketball games) seem intimidated by the crowd and have future calls influenced by the booing they got from past calls. I think that the coaches, players, and refs know when the booing is for the refs…
I sat in QQ orange, row 11. I could barely hear the band on the field when they opened with Hawai‘i Five-O.
Re: Stopping the slants. Coach Mack said that while they could have stopped the slants, they decided to give Weber State those plays early in order to prevent big plays. He showed us some film from the second half where they were playing zone inside contain to stop those plays. (Personally, I’m a man-to-man inside leverage guy, but I did like the adjustments they made.)
I could tell you more, but Coach Mack would send Blaze to kill me. What is said at the Willows stays at the Willows.
And I’m posting this for bighilofan2 and anybody else interested in the Ching Field upgrade fiasco, it’s from a Q&A between SportsHawaii.com members and Jim Donovan:
http://forum.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?p=325006#p325006
Calamari sounds good!
Any recommended places for that?
jason,
thanks for the info. i know the 1st half was confusing at best for some of their O linemen.
homey,
ala wai library, i hear they just crawl into your car when the sun goes down.
jojo…What’s futbol?? There is only one sport that is a real sport and that’s football….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Wow Jason, you gotta speak english for us guys that didn’t get a chance to go to any football clinics yet. “Man-to-man inside leverage?”, you getting Koa-mahu all excited.
Okay, next t-gate, I’ll be the QB and Jason can cover koakane mano-o-mano and show koakane the forearm shiver with the inside leverage.
koakane, you up for the challenge?
watching the game and seeing TG play well made me realize how quick Hawaii fans will turn on a player. it wasn’t so long ago that he was being booed on national television!
Bulla – SHOOTS! I’ll be at the Library tonight!
(J)J – Watch what you say or joje is gonna school you in futbol!
The Charleston Southern game was about a year ago so I don’t know if that constitues “not so long ago”.
Oh and K-5 is hardly “national television”.
Either way, I see what you are saying. Point taken, never forgotten. I won’t make excuses for those with poor attitudes.
Jason,
I’ve been partial to zone blitzing. It’s nice to throw in a corner in the blitz along with this as well in a 4-2-5 nickel package. Or can blitz two down linemen and both linebackers in a 3-2-6 format and send one DE to cover the flats on the appropriate side.
Yeah, can give up the short yardage in the process, but if can get to the QB in a timely fashion or at least make him panic the reward is awesome!
In those slant patterns man-man seems like the best solution but Coach Mack is right about giving up the big play in which case, man-man seems like a big risk.
I do understand where radopps is coming from, though. It was during that Charleston Southern game that a good number of students chanted, “We want Colt! We want Colt!” when Tyler struggled. Then to hear the students euphorically cheer, “Tyler! Tyler!” this past Saturday seemed very hypocritical. Although, many of the students were different, it seemed; I saw a lot of new faces.
But yeah, Hawai‘i fans are so fickle. It’s quite sad.
true dat, homey! So far this season she’s has had an assist in every game.
The thing I liked about their zone adjustments was that it was almost like a man-to-man. If Weber State had a more extensive down-field passing offense, I think they could have exploited that defense, but since they were very basic in their spread passing, it worked very well. It also helped that by that time, we were ahead in the ballgame, and their RB was out with cramps, so we didn’t have to key on the run game too much.
As I said, I’m a base man defense guy, and I personally like the ability of our corners enough where I might put them both on an island each. But I’m more of an offensive strategy guy, so don’t trust anything I say about defensive strategy. 😛
Besides, I like zone blitzing too, and we have great defensive backs and defensive ends to trust in when we do so.
“BOWS BEFORE H*’S”
I don’t know if I can post that slang term I censored above, but I saw a lot of these shirts at the game.
Personally and honestly… I thought this was funny.
While I’m sure some may feel that this is offensive and not proper and whatnot, but again, with the amount of student enthusiasm I saw on Saturday, I personally feel that these organized attempts (custom shirts) at creating camaraderie is necessary.
I believe that the student participation at UH is at an all time-low in recent years and in the past few weekends (starting with Wahine Volleyball), I have seen higher-than-expected amounts of participation for UH athletics amongst the students in home games than I can recall, especially for the beginning of the fall season.
Now is NOT a time to dwell on the short comings that some students may display in terms of home crowd etiquette or behavior. They will learn over time when to make noise at football games and when to be as quiet as possible.
The student participation factor is in a “beggars can’t be choosers” mode right now and I am just happy to see this kind of enthusiasm at home games it’s better than none at all.
I only hope that it continues.
When was Tyler booed on national television? I know that idiots did it during the Charleston Southern game, but that was just K5 if I recall correctly.
What I don’t like is when the fans start booing the visiting team when they come out on the field. Now come on, at least they show up to play the game, unlike the Longhorns and McChicken State. They haven’t done anything to deserve the booing except to get suited up and we should appreciate that gesture alone.
I’d like to see more play action passes (from under center).
I can say for sure that last Spring semester, there were a lot more people wearing UH gear on campus. And now this fall, this trend has grown even further. I sincerely believe that the success of UH football last fall not only furthered a growing local fanbase, but also attracted many people to come to school here from other places.
jason,
you are right about UH gear everywhere. i’ve also seen alot more UH “H” logos on more cars than i can ever remember.
good to see the school spirit, personal pride going strong and stronger.
Oops… just saw that..
Hi Jojo!
Homey? Did we have ‘any’ play action passes from under center?
No can beat the UA logo from A-Joe and Stretch.
It’s not so much that it was hypocritical rather than people wanting to see the team succeed no matter who was under center.
Don’t get me wrong, it p***ed me off to no extreme to hear people chanting “We Want Colt” last season while Graunke was in there, but I’d be lying if I said that Graunke wasn’t frustrating me in that game against Charleston Southern last year.
Thinking about it, Graunke has developed a “love/irritation” relationship with the fans and I have to say I shook my head when he got in trouble in the beginning and then again a few weeks ago, but I never screamed in joy for one individual player than I did on Saturday.
Graunke can make his last season a life-changing experience.
It’s up to him as to how long it will last.
MIH – That’s why I’d like to see more! 😆
A-MEN!!!!
I’ll tell you Jason and Kazz you two guys are just too cerebral for me. You guys got all of this mumbo, jumbo football slang going. Thats just too technical for a general fan like me. One guy’s an offensive strategist kind of guy, the other guy is more of a zone blitz kind of guy. Man, that’s just too much too think about.
I’m more of a show me who to hit and I’ll just hit the crap out of him kind of guy.
chawan_cut, jason,
That’s why UH needs a successful season this year and next. The only way to keep the support snowballing is through success. All will be for naught if the Warriors don’t at least make a bowl game this season. If we beat Oregon this weekend, everyone will be clamoring for a 12-1 season… then hoping that the team keeps hanging on to the “longest” winning streak next season.
This is why we need Cooke Field! grrrr… The delays could cost UH a lot more than they realize…
My son wants to get A-joe’s and Stretch’s UA H logo as a tatoo. He wants to take some to Okinawa with him. I think that I am going to have to convince a couple of guys *hint, hint*
I thought offensive linemen were the smart ones. Particularly, those who can also sing.
With the fan base being the older generation a new generation will need to come in and eventually take over.
Freshmen need to be “targeted”. They are the first ones that should know that UH athletics IS the thing to do in their spare time.
JOHN MCNAMARA….
TAKE NOTICE SIR!!!
NOW IS THE TIME TO REEL ‘EM IN AND KEEP ‘EM!!!
Kazz…I actually think we need to start earlier….get the fan base established at a young age. That’s why having football camps like the one the Warriors just had for younger players and high schoolers was excellent. Gets the parents involved as well.
Also, Mrs. McMackin’s Wahine Football Clinic was great…400 turn out was excellent…next year will probably be bigger…..
Pride
i am with you, these young whippersnappers confuse me more often than not….but at least they’re paying attention, and that i like!
Jason,
You are right. I agree. O-line men are the smartest guys on offense.
Pride,
I pale in comparison to Jason’s analysis. For the me, the more I accentuate the obvious, the more “smart” I seem on paper. 😆
What did you think of Weber State REALLY exaggerating their hand at trying to show the UH offense “blitz” before certain plays?
James,
No can start earlier.. They’re all pre-occupied with Poke-Mon….
Wait, is that what the kids are still into these days? 😆
I left the game at halftime because I was soaking wet. As the people in my party gave up and retreated to the covered concourse during the rain, I stayed in my seat till halftime. But then I left. –Would that make me a “fair weather fan?”
😆 HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
yes BB, that makes you a fan only during “fair weather”. But again BLAME GUY HAGI.
Kazz, if you can get the runnung back to commit to the wrong gap or the wrong side of the line, then hopefully one of your pass rushers will open up and go unblocked to the QB.
Not only are the UH logos being seen more here in our state, but during my travels this summer, it was also quite ubiquitous throughout the mainland.
Tourist families no longer just come here to see the Arizona Memorial, Polynesian cultural center, Northshore, etc. but have also the UH athletic campus on the list of must see sites when visiting the islands. No matter how bitter June Jones departure was, he did put UH football on the map.
Mmmmmmmm, omeletes… Keao Monteilh has good taste. I could go for that same omelete with skillet potatoes and yogurt on the side.
Pride,
Ah, I see. From the end zone it looked like it could be real confusing to the offense when the defense is moving around like that. Of course I’ve seen linebackers showing blitz by moving closer to the dline, but I can’t remember a time when I saw the entire front seven doing it. I could have sworn I even saw NO “down” defensive linemen. They were all standing and moving around looking like Graunke owed them money.
Props to our oline for handling those situations though.
For you football tactics geeks– man under on the receivers and any backs or tight ends running patterns and cover 2 on the back with bump technique to slow the receivers is the classic way to stop the slants. However, man under is dangerous with a quarterback that can run everyone is chasing receivers leaving the QB open to run– you may need to put a spy on him. We did not immediately go to man under/cover 2 because we probably weren’t ready to adjust the D and have a linebacker or safety covering or “spying” the QB, it might have taken awhile to make that kind of adjustment.
Aloha everyone.
1. I “called” Tyler’s appearance in the 2nd quarter(must to the disagreemment of my neighbors in the stands). I like Funaki’s shiftiness but I did notice that he runs too soon (many times before the 2nd and 3rd read). Anyway, nice job Tyler..you got a chance and stepped it up. I was one of the fans who stood up when you ran onto the field and gave me major “chicken skin.” Now practice hard to shake off the rust. Weather’s going to be real nice in Corvalis.
2. This doesn’t mean I don’t like Inoke…I just think he needs work on running the offense and reading the receivers. Hang in there Inoke…you’re talented enough that the coaches will find ways to utilze your skills.
3. Happy belated b-day ST.
4. I’m glad I bought the expensive UH polo style shirt. 5 minutes after the downpour I was dry.
5. Finally..it was really nice to see so many of you on Saturday. I look forward to my 18 minute walk from the other tailgate. See you guys again in a few weeks. Oh, and see some of you in Oregon!
Calvin,
Let us know when the Under Armour check arrives in the mail. 😉
Still upset with OSU’s Jeremy Perry’s (Kahuku) cheap shot on Leonard Peters sore ribs in the last game. Apparently he is “highly doubtful” for Saturday’s game.
Kazz,
Actually it was one of the black Nike shirts. must’ve been left over from last year.
Lelie is in game for the Raiders. #87.
Oh my! 😯
Very strange to see someone other than Jason Elam kicking FG’s for Denver.
NYUH,
I was just about to say that Lelie might never see a ball thrown to him.
The Former Coach was right on about Jamarcus Russell.
I’ll watch a UH game anyway I can get it but watching MNF in HD makes me really, really want KFVE to go HD. Of course 2/09 is the FCC mandated deadline.
NYUH,
Yep. It’s hard to watch anything but HD but even after 2/09 IDK if that means everything will be HD, does “digital” necessarily mean HD?
d1島: Apparently they were quite happy with Lelie’s quick learning of their system. Lucky for him he probably didn’t even have to move house. I guess he might have been scouting them out while he was sick and probably tired of his SF treatment.
NYUH – there is no way I’d want to watch a K5 feed (that’s what the ESPN Gameplan used) with the HORRIBLE camera work and directing. NOTE TO DIRECTOR: DON’T SWITCH CAMERA SHOTS UNTIL A CAMERA IS SET AND IN FOCUS.
Manoa: Exactly, I’m a man under (or man-2) guy, with a little man-1 and cover-2 mixed in. Good to use when teams like to max protect, cause you have options with the linebackers when a back or tight end consistently stays to block. But since Weber State was spreading the field, you gotta trust the four linemen to contain run, pass protect, and watch out for scrambling. I like the athletes we have on the D-line, though, so I wouldn’t mind that, but I guess such a strategy might be a little too risky.
Digital is not the same as HD.
Lelie has one catch for 7 or 8 yards. The other WR is on IR, so he’ll see a lot of game time. Of course, JM didn’t throw a pass the first 8-10 plays….
NYUH: I think gigi had the same misconception. The switch to digital does not mandate a switch to HD; just that you can’t get anything over rabbit ears anymore. At least, that’s the way I understand it.
RE: Digital TV
Digital television Quality Levels
There are many quality levels of digital television programming. The most common are:
Standard Definition TV (SDTV) – SDTV is the basic level of quality display and resolution for both analog and digital. Transmission of SDTV may be in either the traditional (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) format.
Enhanced Definition TV (EDTV) – EDTV is a step up from Analog Television. EDTV comes in 480p widescreen (16:9) or traditional (4:3) format and provides better picture quality than SDTV, but not as high as HDTV.
High Definition TV (HDTV) – HDTV in widescreen format (16:9) provides the highest resolution and picture quality of all digital broadcast formats. Combined with digitally enhanced sound technology, HDTV sets new standards for sound and picture quality in television. (Note: HDTV and digital TV are not the same thing — HDTV is one format of digital TV.)
d1島:: No HD is high definition, more lines per screen, most cable transmission is 720 lines vs the old 480 of the traditional TV. Many HDTV’s have 1080 line capability but that is mainly for the Xbox and other monitor uses. While HDTV can be analog, it is universally digital these days in the US. HD also means the 16:9 aspect ratio like a movie theatre unlike the more boxy 4:3 ratio of traditional TV. Hint: gotta buy those HDMI cables, even if they want $60 for 6ft.
Lelie just got his first catch because Jevon Walker is inactive tonite.
Thanks NYUH, Rich and Jason.
Can I call on you guys the next time I go to Best Buy? 🙂
(As if Mrs.d1島 will even let me in that store anymore!)
Jason – partially true on the rabbit ears. If the TV has a digital tuner, rabbit ears will work. I use a 19″ portable around the house with rabbit ears that receives an HD signal from local stations. Well, the main reason is that I can’t swap my PIP on the 46″ Samsung, so I really use it to watch two football games at the same time on Saturdays and Sundays.
d1 – anytime. Are you the guy in the BB commercial who jumps for joy when da boss says it’s okay to go??? LOL…
Rich,
No. I’m the one who calls the cops and files a missing person report ’cause THAT wouldn’t be Mrs.d1島!
One of the great things about HDTV is that the shots in football games can be a bit wider to keep an eye on the DBs. Of course the TV directors still tend to call for a tighter shot.
I can’t stand this anymore…When are the Raiders gonna stop sending the JV squad?
I’m gonna watch the news in hopes of seeing something less depressing!
👿
Thanks for the correction; I was under the impression that a digital tuner does something else. 🙂
D1 – You can buy HDMI cables at SamsClub which are cheap as compared to Monster Cable. Of course should you get a blu-ray DVD player, and blu-ray movie disc, you can achieve 1080 lines and close to it should you have a DVD player that “upgrades”
Any word on LWJ? He took that nasty out-of-bounds late hit on the ankle. Can’t believe the refs didn’t call it.
Tom,
Howzit.
Already got a HDMI cable for the PS3. I guess we can use that for Blu-ray movies.
NYUH,
Read somewhere that LWJ has turf toe. Should play this week IIRC
OK, after 5 minutes of news it’s a toss-up on the “depression scale” 🙁
throw the ball to lelie at least!
Other than ~100 expensive club seat tickets, the UH-Oregon State game is officially sold out:
http://www.osubeavers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=4700&ATCLID=1577999
I wonder how many Hawai’i fans will be in attendance?
Chawan_Cut – Dumb question for you…When you record off the tv to dvd, what program do you use to make the clips and then send it to youtube?
CRW,
Amazing, considering that classes don’t start until 9/29
Garrett:
I’m much more worried about recruits seeing us trail an FCS school by 10 at halftime and completely bungling the clock management than by some booing. This ain’t PE, this is the big time. Aloha Stadium with a big crowd (35k plus) is a big time college football atmosphere. Remember, Boise only seats 32k. I’ve been to venues on the mainland in the Big 12 and UH is right there as a game day experience. Recruits are smart and can see whats going on. Booing is not necessarily a bad thing.
zzzzzzzzzzzz…………….Lelie gets another catch…………Raiders really are BAAAAAAAAAAAD…….back to sleep……zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
We’re two games into the season and there is something I’ve been thinking about since spring and it’s regarding the most “solid” part of the team and that’s defense.
Now this is nothing bad, but just something I feel.
When Coach Mack was being brought up as the new head coach some people started discussions as to who would be the defensive coordinator. I never thought of it as I assumed Coach Mack would resume duties in that area as well as head coaching responsibilities. JJ did the same on the offense so I figured why not Coach Mack do the same with the defense.
Then to no surprise Cal Lee got the spot. It made perfect sense as Cal Lee is that defensive guy and has a proven track record to go with it. However, it still feels like to me that Coach Mack is still making the defensive calls and Cal Lee is like a liason between the defense and our head coach Coach Mack. I don’t know if it’s just me still thinking Coach Mack is the ONLY one making defensive calls/adjustments during games because of his defensive resume over the years, but I still don’t get the feeling that Cal Lee is the first one to step up and suggest that the defense does this or that, but to me, as an OUTSIDE observer, that Coach Mack makes the initial calls and Cal Lee makes sure the plan is executed maybe???
I always assumed that the coordinators make the initial calls and then would refer to the head coaches or they just call it and it happens and if the coach needs to change something then they change it.
Right now I am still feeling that Coach Mack is making the calls and that Coach Lee is there to give his two cents after the fact.
Now, I am NOT saying that Cal Lee should have “more power” on defensive calls because again I want to stress that this is just my OUTSIDE observation and I could be wrong about it.
I mean for all I know, maybe Coach Lee is making all the calls and when necessary Coach Mack will add his two cents, but for now I just feel that Coach Mack is still the man behind the defense and that Cal Lee is a supporting member on defense even though he is the “defensive coordinator”.
Is it just me that assumes this?
TD Lelie!
TD……..LELIE…..now it’s 27-7 w/ 13:08 in Q4.
Ashley scores, despite the pass interference.
Kazz: Coach Mack has always said that he’s going to be making the calls on defense. Mack and Cal discuss the defensive gameplan, then Cal implements it in practice — at least, that’s how I understand it.
Crap…. I knew I missed something.
IGNORE POST #278
But I think those two are brothers seperated at birth in terms of their defensive minds and thinking.
Also can you see Mack, Cal, and Ron all at one Karaoke Bar tearing it up??? 🙂
Go Selvin Young! (He’s on my fantasy team.)
Kazz,
You may be closer to the truth than you realize!
Kazz: Yeah, I found more info from another source that confirmed what I thought.
Gotta be fast to beat these bloggers. Just what Lelie needs, a strong arm to get him the ball downfield. Jake Plummer was the kiss of death for him in Denver. Must be sweet for him to get one against his old mates.
rich2176,
i use gigapocket, its the software that came with my sony vaio.
C_C – thanks. I thought I’d be able to load a dvd on Nero, Windows Movie Maker or Intervideo WINDVD, set a time line to export and wallah…no such luck.
Hey Garret, thanks! I guess Jon just doesn’t get it. Hope he’s not sitting next to me at any games, mainland or Hawaii.
Don’t worry KonaGirl, I get it. You must be the one at games that says “You’re all winners!!! Yeah!!”
I’d just as soon you sit somewhere else as well.
OSU GAME TICKETS
Right now, all the extra tickets that I am aware of are spoken for. There are still people looking for tickets so if anyone has tickets for sale, preferably in the Hawaii section, please email me at stretch6592 at yahoo and I can put you in contact.
Stretch,
Sent you e-mail
Stretch,
Now sent to the right addy

Reality
Lets hope that our offense, defense and coaches find themselves soon or we are going to be for along season.
I thought that ceremony for team entrance at the start of the game was flat compared to what we’ve the past eight years. No introductions! Villi looked as if he was lost. If the UH band is going play the music at the entrance I would also like to see them play during the warm ups like they used to do before JJ. My wife and I enjoyed their playfull antics in the old days before the game and they were not only entertaining but helped get the crowd ready for the team entrance.
Pride ~ Lets get back to the basics as I stated in my earlier (#49) post this morning. Nothing to hard to remember…Pursue, Contain, and Tackle…hard!
Jon – I know you will not change your ways, but at least I have planted the seed and I can guarantee that the next time you boo, you will have one flash of a moment that you think about not doing it.
BTW: I played sports all of my life, including college, my brother played pro ball and my dad coached. I am NOT one who thinks everyone should get a ribbon just for participating. There is a lot to learn from competition, winning and losing. So, no, I don’t want a world of as you say “you’re all winners.”
All I want is for the fans to get it together and cheer together and at the right time. If you think booing is fine, not much I can do about that. Look at the Raider fans tonight…didn’t hear a lot of booing and they had every reason to: their team is paid to perform and they’re Raider fans! But, they’ll be back next week with a packed stadium, dressing up and cheering their team on.
Enough said…
rich2176,
there are ways to get clips from dvds, but its a little more complex.
if you’re willing to search and read, this is a good site:
http://www.videohelp.com
For some reason, watching Jonathan Papelbon on SportsCenter reminded me of something I wanted to mention about Dan Kelly. Coach Mack said they noticed Kelly’s plant foot was too close to the ball, which may have led to the missed field goals. They plan on working with Kelly to fix that problem.
Rich,
If you’re trying to convert the entire DVD, DVDFab does a pretty good job.
Koakane,
I saw your additional comments last night about the iPhone. Thanks. Just got to decide if I should get the 3G version.
Hate to admit this, but over Labor Day weekend, VH1 Classics was showing 80 hours of 80’s videos. I recorded about 15 hours of it on several dvds. There are a LOT of bad videos, so I’d like to make one compilation dvd. One of my favorties is Todd Rundgren “Bang the Drum all Day”. The video is hilarious… The ultimate beer drinking song..

Travis LaBoy is a nominee for the NFL’s GMC Sierra Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the 49ers. You can vote for him online:
http://www.nfl.com/partner?partnerType=players-defense
C_C & Oldie – thanks for the info. I’ll do some research. When I record UH games on DVD, I would like to make my own highlight dvds.
Whatever KonaGirl, I played college ball as well. I just choose not to come on to blogs to tell others how to react to the team.
Kazz: Re #278,
My observations from last Saturday’s game, watching the sidelines, is that you may be correct. In a defense meeting on the 30 yd sideline during a timeout, Mack was in the middle of the D unit doing all the talking… Cal was just outside the circle on the headset talking to upstairs, I presume…
Congratulations to Tyler Graunke!
This is irrelevant, but I find the need to say that I don’t like omelets (or eggs, for that matter). 🙂
And my mom is gonna be scrambling around like a crazy lady tomorrow as she and my dad are leaving Wednesday for the OSU game. I’m jealous. I went to school in Oregon and wouldn’t mind visiting some old friends, especially my parents’ classmates in Corvallis (even if we’re playing AGAINST their team). They “adopted” me every Thanksgiving and cooked food that was actually familiar to me. I should also mention that shopping in Oregon is like a dream since there’s no sales tax. Loved every bit of that!
Rich,
For video editing, I use Adobe Premiere. It lets you cut precisely to the frame. Unfortunately, it takes some work to get the files to where Premiere will accept them. I’ve been using Premiere and Adobe Encore to create the DVDs of the Warrior games.
Hello, people.
Sorry for being out all day.
Went to the morning run-through.
Then to Na Koa lunch.
Then after writing, we had a surprise party for Wena.
And, yes, unfortunately for the listening audience, the lion did not sleep tonight.
Rich/Stephen,
Well that’s another video I can look for.
*Thanks* a lot Rich! As if I didn’t already have enough things to divert my attention already. 😉

but if dat wasn’t you, then to da fake Pride:
I’ll take da midget. he did guud, dat boy did!
i got hi hopes fo da team now dat da midget is outta da closet! he’s a gamester all right. go Tyler go!!!
Go Warriors
So, we’re in negotiations for a football clinic for our male bloggers.
The idea is to bring in a coach, and then we can have a little Q&A. We’re trying to work out the details, but I think the bye week would be good. Thursday might be best — opposite Grey’s Anatomy.
Of course, I’m not doing it on Mondays. That’s my “The Hills” night.
ST — glad you could have a party for Wena! But don’t forget to invite the Tsai-ko Karaoke Choir sometime… we’re available for parties… 😆
Oh, I would have loved to have invited the peeps. But, actually, my sister-in-law and daughters planned it.
It was the only way my son would sing.
Ooh …
Coach Mac is a chess player, matching wits with the other team’s OC. Every game is different from the last. Plays and schemes are adjusted to the opponents style of play and personnel. The only thing predictable about his game plan is he’s bringing heat. Down and distance dictates alignment and assignment, Mack is pretty good at making in game adjustments to either. I trust in Mac’s experience, he’s been at it a long time. There’s not much he hasn’t seen. His history in hawaii has been when the game is on the line in the 4th Q, his defense has come through.
d1 – I’ve been glued to that site for the past hour. Just watched the 13 minute version of Free Bird by Lynard Skynard, and now watching White Room by Cream….some really good memories listening to this music.
In the spirit of open and, uh…spirited discussion…
I’m with Jon on this one. Fans can cheer and fans can boo…Coach Mack recognizes that. This particular case, the crowd was clearly booing the play-calling and not the players (we had about 20 minutes of fruitless offense in the first half to do that, but we didn’t). ALL of us, no doubt, were wondering what was going on with time and timeout management in the last 1:38 of the first half.
Yes, a crowd’s expression of negativity really can’t be “directed” at the coaching staff, and I’m sure a UH player or two wondered if the crowd was booing them. I’m aware that sometimes there are a few bad apples who attend Aloha Stadium, but really, when things get that bad, something booing is just human nature. Not like deathly silence or begging would be much better.
At the end of the day the State of Hawaii is very firmly behind Mack and the team, win or lose.
“something booing” = “sometimes booing”
I have to agree with Jon and BowsForever. Was watching the game thinking what the hell is the coaching staff thinking…I would have booed if I was in the stadium for the lapse in coaching at the end of the half. The only thing I could think of was that they knew they were getting the ball to start the 3rd Qtr and TG was either going to lead the team to the promised land or go down with the ship. I would be money that fans boo bad decision calling by the coaches vs the effort from the players. Unless it’s so obvious that the players couldn’t execute the most basic of plays or situations.
Rich,
I’ve only started Jammin’ with Bob Marley.
Could be a lo—ng night….(how many vacation days do I have?)
Here’s something to think about, though: the public has clearly set a standard that little kids should not be booed when they play in Pop Warner or Little League. So even though booing is human nature, we as a society have set a standard. The question is, what is that standard? Is it only 12 years and under? High school and under? Amateur vs. professional?
Bows Forever,
I hope you are only booing the paid peeps (refs and coaches) and not the “amateur” players. And I hope you don’t boo pop warner and little league players too.
As am I BowsForever… I’m a 100% Warrior Fan (though I wish it were still Rainbow Warriors)
It’s not like most people are seeking out an opportunity to Boo, it’s only for times when things are really going bad that the team should be able to control, clock managment, effort, mental errors. I’d never Boo over a single play or even a single series of errors. Going into the half last Saturday was a classic example.
Again, just my two cents.
OK. Mrs.d1島 wouldn’t stand for any boo-ing by yours truly. #1 son, who was on the other side of me and safely out of range, on the other hand….
Oooo, “One-hit Wonders”
….and wouldn’t you know it? Speaking of Booing the Bows. First on the list: Macarena by Los del Rio 🙂 (shades of von Crappen)
And I don’t distinguish between booing players vs. booing coaches in this thought question because I don’t think it’s as easy to distinguish at times. BowsForever said that “clearly” the fans were booing the coaches, but I’m not so sure about that. There were clearly folks (students, mind you) in my area who were already distressed before the play-calling fiasco occurred.
Note that I didn’t necessarily say I was booing. I WAS all “2 timeouts, 1:38 left, we’re the run-n-shoot, let’s TRY something!”
Pop Warner? Little League? Let’s not stretch things outside of the current frame of reference. Booing in the presence of kids THAT age…that’s just wrong and no one’s said otherwise. Also, we’ve got some damn good Pop Warner/Little League teams in out little home in the middle of the sea. 🙂
Hey, college sports is an emotional thing sometimes. But I can tell you this — not once did I boo Colt and Co. when Georgia thrashed Hawaii, nor do I think any less of Greg Alexander after the Florida blowup.
“Co Ed?”
Wow. I played in the band for 4 years and all this time I thought the title to that song was, “One! Two! Ready! Play!”
d1 – I’ve posted a link to southern rock rises again. Guess it’s time to get a case of Bud, find the lava lamp and blacklight…..
Now, I wonder if there’s a video of Hawaii 5-0, other than the opening to the series….
Jason and Shaolin, I think the standard is adults. No place in High School or younger athletics. Big Time football that charges Big Time prices, serves alcohol and wants to be a money maker for the University needs to expect that there will be pressure on the team by fans that want success.
Not the same watching Little League or the OIA playoffs.
My kingdom for the ability to edit my comments. I’m too spoiled with forum-style postings that let me do that I guess.
Jason — well, people can differ on the time of booing, etc. But if Inoke misses a chance to run to a first down and tries for a tricky 20-yard out-of-the-pocket throw instead? If LWJ reverts to his stutter-step problem from last year when the O-line just opened a close-to-guaranteed 5+ yard gap? When the defense is looking unbelievably porous compared to the Florida game? When all of this comes crashing down on us all at once, a few “aw come on!” or “what’re you guys doing!?” remarks aren’t totally unjustified. Just my humble opinion.
Jason,
My exact sentiments; how does a player differentiate the boos are for the coaches and or the players?
I am a little suspicious of selling alcohol in Aloha Stadium when it occasionally gets poured on unsuspecting visiting teams’ fans (Fresno State ’07 anyone?) but that’s not here or there right now, I guess.

so come down by da team tunnel, I’ll be dare wit my bannah. C row 3/4/5 seats 2. good fun. da kids come down and yell at/wit da playahs, get to cheer dem on, you are right in da coaches face so booing is not cool at all but dare are all kines a ways to encourage da coaches an da playahz. I got da bestest seat in da stadium! and da players really appreciate the good wishes and encouragement.

I’m thinking the DCCA peeps know the scoops and I’m hoping DCCA moves the hearing along real fast starting tomorrow. they know this is a public spectacle, not just a legal matter. we all know Sadowski CO-HA going appeal to Circuit Court, State Supreme Court.
I’m thinking that DCCA, Procurement, HAR gotta make a new rule that disqualifies litigious guyz from being able to bid. then define litigious guyz to be like CoHa and Sadowski. I’m hoping that DCCA will make an order saying there was no legal basis for the complaint. build a record against Sadowski to establish litigious. drive his cohorts away from him.
make this an expensive proposition for him delaying the Ching Cooke Field Fix.
And make this a public spectacle so that other general contractors will think it unwise to use him as their sub.
Jim Donovan got it right today. We all gotta let the governor and lt. governor and Mr. Mukai and Procurement and all the people at Contractor’s Board that Slowdownski is a jerk and is not for us.
MY GOAL IS TO MAKE HIS DRAMA COST HIM MONEY, LOTS OF MONEY. and bad publicity .
Keeping his karma boiling on this blog is a help and a step in the right direction.
The truth is like madeinhawaii 230 said, this delay could cost UH more than they realize.
hell, i realize it. SADOWSKI doesn’t give a crap about UH. Somebody oughta check on his Roosevelt Field Fix, his relationship with other generals. I’m passing the word…. I’m talking to Civil Engineers, others who stand at the government troughs. The word is out.
Sadowski is not for Hawaii. Thats a fact when you look at the facts of this case. You guyz remember Madeline Smith? Same smell. He’s got his own agenda. How the hell we gonna compete with Florida and Georgia when we got idiots in our mist?
Go Warriors!
Jon,
How about HS coaches who can’t get “over the hump” and blow it two years in a row in the last minute of the state finals? Just a hypothetical question, of course. Right Bulla?

Well……. Dats up to you… I’ve been to a lot of HS sports and never felt the need to boo. To each his own. St. Louis had a lot of success over the past few DECADES, they were due to come up a lil short for once. 😀
Sheesh, and Ching Field was supposed to have been fully resurfaced by end of October or sooner, just before the rainy season really kicked in. Really sad that this BS is happening now.
Thanks Izzy. That was sweet, even with the subtitles. Now, I’ll never know the words…LOL. I guess it was too hot in the desert to bring out the horn section.
Bows Forever and Jon,
I respect your opinions and we were all emotionally intesnse during that first half.
Bobby Curran took it upon himself to make sure he asks Coach Mack about the 1:38-to-go time management deal on Tuesday. That’ll help give us a little more insight into the coaching staff’s thought process. Aside from that, the second half was about as perfect as second halves get.

(But then, all you guys look alike to me!)
Second half was Goooooood!!!
BTW:
Did I miss something? Where’s gigi?
Rich,
Looking at the “Views” counts on that Southern Rock page I can see why it took so long to load!
Good stuff!
To boo or not to boo. It’s an individual decision. Rule of thumb use to be you don’t boo amateurs. Refs and coaches are pros, players are amateurs.
Booing the home team is an expression of displeasure and frustration. If it makes you feel better, than let it out. Do you think booing helps the team, hurts the team or has no affect on the team. To me it has no affect but the people around me were a little miffed that people were booing their team.
The two worries I have about booing is some booer’s frustration turn to disgust(I’m so disgusted with/about), then distain and they stop showing up(I’ve had it). The second is booing can be contageous, that guy’s booing, so can I. Next thing you know we’re booing Santa(philly fans)
I will boo the opponent.
I will cuss and swear at the officials.
But I will not boo at ANY Hawaii team.
Like they say, you wouldn’t want me to come to your place of employment and boo you, right.
But maybe you deserve it.

Why in the world am I being asked for a user name and password while the page loads?
Koauka,
It was only a hypothetical.
We’re Wildcats now.
It did the same thing to me Jason. Could you get to the bottom of this right away and report back, please. I just kept retrying and it stopped.
Evening Tsai-kos!
Jason – I thought I was the only one. Been having problems with my computer, so I thought it was me…. 🙁
I too don’t think you should boo players, only refs, maybe coaches, but mostly refs. But whadda I know…
Same here.

The adventure continues…
Anyone notice how much improved the blog is?
Jon and BowsForever,
You guys just don’t get it. You guys must have boo’d last year’s team in the Sugar Bowl too since they must not have been trying either. I on the other hand stood proudly in the Superdome and sang Hawai’i Pono’i with pride after the game and applauded effort. Enough said.
SteveM – same thing happened to me. The centered 4-pt font has been happening to me quite often lately, but only at home, so I thought it was my computer.
homey – improved? oh, must be sarcastic….
Well WB shoppers, it looks like we’ve come to the end of another wonderful day.
Please proceed to the nearest exit to complete your transactions.
And remember, we don’t want you to go away mad; we just want you to go away….
Oh, it’s SteveM.
I guess I’ll go check out his site now….
SteveM,
“under construction”?
Grrrr… 👿 🙂
jm2375 – I guess a tekkie from India is bored.
Oh well.
Oyasumina-tsai….
3 Prong:
I was in the Superdome on New Years Day and I did not Boo. We got steamrolled in that game, not because of our mistakes but because a better team beat us. As I mentioned before, I boo when there has been a consistent pattern of mistakes that we have control over. Not one player, not one play. And that is my right as you have rights as well.
And I sang Hawaii Pono’i right along with you! (best moment of the game)
thanks for clearing that up. i thought i was pronouncing graunke correctly. so please go tell liz chun she is wrong (again) and to please pronounce it correctly hereafter.
on saturday after graunke entered and did a command performance. i was trying to get those around me to chant,
graunke!
graunke!
graunke!
however, no takers.
when graunke entered the game to start the second half. i turn to the son and say, “this. this is the season right here.”
…nuff said
oh, and konagirl….no shame borrow but please use it correctly. no be so formal. its “…nuff said”
hey, some of my best son-in-laws are from kona.
3-Prong, please read post number 329. Just because we don’t think booing isn’t completely unacceptable doesn’t mean we hate the team. I don’t think this is a clear-cut debate once you get to the college level. And if you try and shout down people who’ve been around this board a while and have conducted themselves with perfect civility (by the way, I’m _not_ suggesting that you are), well that just isn’t helpful.
I think I set a lifetime best of most negatives in one sentence. A quadruple negative even! My English teacher(s) must be so disappointed in me. Too much negativity for one night.
good nite d1.
hehehe, is the coast clear? time to do an esme and play in the clubhouse? what’s in da fridge?
kazz
i was thinking the same.
pride,
you coming out?????
no!!!! that’s just wrong.
jason and dpk with username and password issue. you guys got caught lurking at the other place so you became aliens or the blog suspected that you guys are davey boy reardon.
Huh? Username/password request from the blog? I had that for a while too.
Jon – I thought we did make some big mistakes in the Sugar Bowl, but as I said in post 329, I never booed once. I felt really bad for the Warriors because I knew they wanted to put on a better performance for the State of Hawaii and they thought they were letting us down, even though we’ll be talking up “The Perfect Season” for years to come. But that’s enough reliving the distant past for me.
Looking ahead, as long as our O-line and D put up a Florida-level amount of effort, we’ll be in very good shape for Oregon State.
For those of you who have not been tracking the details – tomorrow, September 9, at 9 am in a conference room on the first floor of the DCCA building next to the main post office and across King Street from the `Iolani Palace Bandstand, there will be a preliminary hearing conducted by the DCCA Hearings office on the appeal filed by CO-HA Builders Inc.dba Applied Surfacing Technology against the University of Hawai`i at Manoa for awarding the Ching/Cooke Field renovations project to the lowest bidder RMY Construction Inc. The charge is that neither RMY Construction Inc failed to retain the services of a properly-licensed sub-contractor, Sports Turf Hawaii, owned by Logan Hamocon who had installed the new turf in Murakami Stadium last fall working as the subcontractor on that job for RMY.
The purpose of this preliminary hearing is to prepare the parties for the full-on hearing to be held on Tuesday, August 23.
The University will be represented by outside counsel -William McCorriston who is not afraid to tangle with the toughest when needed.
There are two complimentary arguments which the University most likely will pursue: The first is the failure by the Contractors License Board to properly follow both statutory and regulatory requirements for establishing new rules for specific contractors’ licenses.
The second is that DCCA failed to inform all state agencies – UH, DOE, DAGS, DHHL, etc. – that there are new requirements for artificial turf installations.
When UH issued the Invitations For Bids on July 1 which were then opened on July 25, there were no specific restrictions as to who could bid on the contract anywhere in the document except for the following paragraph: “To be eligible to bid, bidders must possessa valid State of Hawaii contract’s license A. BIDS FROM CONTRACTORS NOT LICENSED IN THE STATE OF HAWAII WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.” The second sentence is also underlined in the IFB.
Why didn’t the Executive Secretary or the Deputy Attorney General assigned to the Contractors License Board issue these new requirements to all state agencies? That’s a critical question.
In the meantime, many folks here are really poosed orff because of the delays. Please do not blame the University because they got caught in the middle trying to do the right thing for the winning bidder, the taxpayers and the Athletic Department.
They could have folded and given in to the challenge.
In case you aren’t aware of it, there will be a HUGE artificial turf replacement project coming up around 2011 or so which will cost significantly more. That’s the underlying base for this challenge.
Are you going to be there, BHF2? Or is Jason your surrogate? I let Tom Mui know and hope that he is there as well. If allowed, I’ll be recording the proceedings.
oh goodie. haven’t played in the clubhouse for a while. heehee. Let’s see… anything new? got any t-gate leftovers? *jumping on the couch* *raid da fridge – al’s pordagee sausage (yummm).* *sneaking out the back door*
D1shima went sleep? Sorry — only have 4 general shots of the Tsaiko-gate site up. Was doing other serious mischief and have to work tomorrow. Anyone have a food pix showing the overall table and fuud trays piled two deep? …and a few grill shots?
Managed to put up two pix from the Orlando Cattle Call (photos from the A-House’s)…on the Cattle Call page.
If anyone puts up their photo libraries of the Tsaiko-Gate, please send me the URL and I will link it from the my modest 2008 Tsaiko-Gate page.
Good night everyone!
Eh!…Who knew W-Doc was instrumental in saving “The Falls of Clyde?”
Truth, Justice, and W-Doc!…Slobowski is in real trouble now! Sick ’em W-Doc!
jm2375 ~ You and Esme one pair! You wait ’til Aunty Tita Lead Limbs catch you two jumpin’ on da couch! Have you ever heard of the term “burn your wrinkles!”
Hiya!
hmmm. I remembering booing and saying $^@^%& when they showed the replay of Colt getting concussed in the Fresno game.
Usually, I would say NO WAY!
Of course booing came in handy trying to help the blindfolded guy claim his prize during halftime. At first the crowd welled directions but then got into Yea and Boo when he was getting closer or further away. I thought that was a cool adjustment.
Kekoa:
Re the Falls of Clyde. A story about the Friends of Falls of Clyde’s efforts is coming out this week in Honolulu Weekly. We are “cautiously optimistic” that the group will be successful in its negotiations with Bishop Museum to take over the ship’s ownership.
As for my role, I am just a worker bee setting up meetings, putting paperwork together, developing budgets, identifying funding resources, etc. The real heroes are the people in Hawai`i’s maritime community who have stepped forward to to keep the ship from being scuttled.
#42 james not as difficult as people might believe. spint out moving pocket is easily established.
roll to desired side of field seal inside and up fornt then use options depending on end rushing up field or stretching out. add to dat pass routes with timed throws or reads give advantage to a qb like inoke. with trips to one side put plenty pressure on corners and lb’s covering flats, sidline and deep. only draw back is you cut in the field in half for your offense.
oh good evening tsai-ko late nighters. finished work late and just enough time to eat, read and blog.
😆 my take on the cheering by the student and vili. imho we should slack off on the student because not to long ago we wanted the students to make it to the UH games. they would add more of a college atmosphere. wishing more student turn out for da game and support da team. I was happy to see so much students at the game, cheering, having a good time and representing. if das what they want den go head. I want the rust bucket jumping next time.
only if you putting up some beers
Koakane- my braddah. you up late, eh? no mo school tomorrow?
Koakane-
I like your analysis of the game.
it’s been a tough night on the blog, slow refreshing, and each time i scroll down to the next page, it has to reload with the hour glass slowly blinking away, and a pop up asking for my password…I switch to the homepage HA and I get a message server not available. good night…

I’m watching the byu and husky game, 3 minutes to go, just curious to see the ref’s call on the hushky td..
took homey’s suggestion and up loaded google chrome again and I finally got to transfer all my bookmarks from firefox…now if google chrome will fireup the HA server to work faster, quicker and more efficiently I’ll be a happy camper…
Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.
Happy thoughts. Happy thoughts.
Then again, Dennis SADOWSKI gotta be dealt with, so I am not a happy camper, no I’m not.
You guyz who are booing out there from time to time, Jon, BowsForever, help out. As Jason 204 said,
And I’m posting this for bighilofan2 and anybody else interested in the Ching Field upgrade fiasco, it’s from a Q&A between SportsHawaii.com members and Jim Donovan:
http://forum.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?p=325006#p325006
Why this is so frustrating is because we teach our student-athletes to compete as hard as possible until the clock reads 0:00 and the game is over. We teach them once the game is over, to go over and shake their opponents’ hands and congratulate them on a great contest no matter whether they won or lost. We teach them that after the game is over, they need to take the lessons learned and apply them to the next game or season. In this case, it appears that at least one of the bidders wants to keep on “playing the game after the game is essentially over”.
We have a worthwhile project. We gotta educate the public about peeps who take advantage of loopholes and laws that allow for fairness, yada yada. SADOWSKI is one of those… phfftttt.
The bottom line is, our team isn’t going to be able to compete with the biggies until we make the improvements JJ was talking about last year. Its been a year. Some peeps have stepped up, the Gov. put out the $$ for the Ching Cooke Field Fix.
And then, we get DENNIS SADOWSKI to foul things up. And we get crappy legal guidance that really slow things down at the Contractor’s Board.
I know they don’t care about our public opinion, they’re doing their thing for the general public.
I say foooey on the Contractor’s Board. I say all this bookwork belongs in the classroom. I say our Warriors are for all of us, the homeless, the bookworms, all of us feeling good about Hawaii. This Contractor’s Board crap and DENNIS SADOWSKI are not at all contributing to our feeling good about ourselves.
DENNIS SADOWSKI is on my booo list….
Is he on yours? Him and CO-HA can take a hike!
There is the legal channel. And there is the public opinion channel. We can get enough steam going so that the Herman Frazier peeps ah da world can go somewhere else to have a good life. Not here.
Herman would still be here if the public wasn’t educated on his car/car.
Same with SADOWSKI. Same smell…
I’m gonna make one boo cheer.
Sack Sadowski
Sack Sadowski
an I’m tinkin about a bannah.
any ideas?
I got two weeks, unless somebody gives me an idea and i can get one up for Oregon State.
Go Warriors!!!
No sense hiding my feelings….
SADOWSKI’s name is gonna be all ova da Aloha Stadium, maybe get chance on da JUMBOTRON. I promise myself dat.
I am not going to let this babootzka get in da way of us trying to improve our team. and DENNIS SADOWSKI is definitely in da way of us doing what we can to help our team.
You got Na Koa helping out. You got Yoshida helping out. You got the Ching Family Helping Out.
And then, you got Dennis Sadowski “helping” out.
heh heh heh. Go figure!
kden,
Doc,
no can justify flying today. but i going to da office, tinkin happy thoughts, knowing you wen stir stuff and i wen stir stuff. its been put in da mix what i tinkin peeps should know, today peeps do the prelims, an i like go OSU so i gotta stay Hilo an finish jobs.
Karin Holma,
you get one hard job, cuz dis is not a DCCA hearing. you guyz can make all day like wit da palapala, speeches, wear nice clothes, make nice, make polish, take baff, wait till 0745, pau at 1630.
me, I’m for supporting local talent UH Warriors. Warriors give our kids hope for the future.
get dis book written by dis
chicklady. she was talking about the family pet, bully. one day she came home and da bull wasn’t around. an her fadda neva say wat happened to bully. and den she saw plenny hambugers on da stove, and her fadda had samoa hamburgers on da plates. she couldn’t eat da bully burger. me, i’da said ‘pass da ketchup’! I’m also gonna say eat up Sadowski’s rights. and leffs.he is not contributing to the State of Hawaii. But you’re right, he’s got rights. Just don’t expect Hawaii to become a major football power in your lifetime. Expect bad facts, like Sadowski, to be the force behind Hawaii reacting and making bad law. Meanwhile, I’m just gonna point out what I know to be true: Sadowski is junk for Hawaii.
If a Sadowski can hold up da fix of a facility at UH because of a legal problem, then a/the State law(s) have got to be changed. That is a government problem. You got one govt guy pointing to anudda govmnt guy and saying its not my problem, its his problem, oh its 4:30 pm, an i gotta go. pfttt.
I say fix the loophole!!! You got Deputy Attorney Generals all over the place. Hearing officers all over the place. Lawyers all over the place. Ask yourselves, how can we change the laws so that Sadowski doesn’t have a law to hide behind as part of his challenge of the bidding process. We’ve gone to the idiot extreme, giving him rights. No wonder get D3 category. Dumb, dumber and dumchit.
I say “Rail on Sadowski” until da problem is gone.
Good Morning to all!
Boy, I had no idea the booing topic would strike such nerves…it’s great to hear all the opinions and perspectives.
On to other things…does anyone know who we can write or call to show our disapproval of the Ching- Cooke Field situation? When we were all up in arms about HF, there were names, e-mail addresses and numbers to call and write to and it worked! I’ll do some research, but if anyone has it available, please share.
Mahalo and GO WARRIORS!!!
I say to Dave McClain
no appropriate $ for UH Law School budget until UH Athletics fixes until da Ching Cooke Field. Give some remedial education to the Attorney General so
his gang isn’t wasting our tax money. As to UH Athletics, his gang is wasting our money. Just look at the Contractor’s Board Rodney Tam. Dat bradda betta get a grip on dat Board. Day runnin him ova. Da AG gotta go help out Rodney. Sadowski an his friends are running da smokescreen so da rules make for less competition and more rippin off da public, saying get rules when no mo rules. and one hand of Lingle’s admin not tellin da odda hans ah da Lingle admin wat da udda han wen do. dats whats happening wit dis bulliiyah rules kind stuff. day can do dat for fixin roads, bridges, society engineering stuff, but not for Warrior Nation stuff. dat no can.
read WsupDoc’s post 11:16pm.
attack da pocketbook, create da motivation to fix the problem. we gotta make da fix da priority. It takes all of us stepping up and helping fix da problem. I’m stepping up, puttin my mouth on the line, to the point that I know I’m not gonna make friends.
but wat da heo, you no make advance unless you get outta da foxhole and charge!!!!
Go Warriors!!!
Jon and BowsForever:
Sorry for the harsh comments, must have had a bad day yesterday.
GO WARRIORS
bighilofan2
It was a pleasure and honor to have met you at the tail-gate. 🙂
Okay…what’s wrong with the blog.
Good morning KonaGirl. Thats the spirit!
So da bugga is Dennis Sadowski. He is a director officer and peep in charge of a company called Co-Ha, a Haw. corp. Co-Ha’s name, but da perp is Sadowski.
His lawyer is Karin Holma, Bays Deaver Rose yada Holma. Like Doc said, dare beef is dat RMY no mo license, and RMY listed Sports Turf Hawaii as da sub. And RMY says Sports Turf Hawaii is the legal
dba for Logan Hamocon, which it is, and both UH and RMY have had past dealings with each other, binding contract, using the same name entities. Thats the legal beef so far on the paper. But you never know, Karin could write something else up for
Dennis SadowskiCo-Ha.They filed a complaint with DCCA. The complaint has been assigned to Cheryl Nagata, hearings officer. The prelim is today, 9 am. Hearing is for 9/23/08. The State’s rep is William McCorriston, McCorriston Miho Miller.
Dare is anodda prolem. Rodney Tam is the Deputy AG now assigned to the Contractor’s Board. The Contractor’s Board has been having a bunch of meetings, but never had a Chapter 91 meeting on this synthetic field turf new rules applications.
The Contractor’s Board has made a suggested rule change, but there has never been any public notice about the proposed rules, by public notice i mean the kind that means Chap 91 HRS standards.
And now, we know that this new rules stuff is a bunch of hooey that really will cost the taxpayers more $ because they’re going to limit the amount of peeps that can get the special licenses, so the guys who now have the “specialty” license can charge the State more $$ to fix the high school fields and the Stadium yada yada. Guyz like Dennis Sadowski can then hire these other guyz, like Logan Hamocon, as sub subs and Sadowski can take a profit witout doing da actual work. I’d like to ask Dennis Sadowski what schooling has he actually attended in the last 5 years to install turf, who actually installed the Roosevelt field turf, any problems with the turf since then, a Q&A with KaiKor reps, get to da bottom ah dis guy.
Dats da background for me to suggest you write to da Governor. Tell her get idiots on her team!!!
Me, I’m making a bannah! You going see um Garanz
on 9/27 at Aloha Stadium. My goal is to make da JUMBOTRON. going be tasteful, but you going get da point.
Howzit Duffer,
you got it all wrong. It was my honor and pleasure, sir. guud fuud and guud fun, yuh?!
you know, i like Pride and Kekoa’s analogy about football. to the point
3 Prong, Jon, BowsForever, KonaGirl,
hey you guys, I’m tinkin there are some truths we can agree upon.
I am for UH Warriors.
I am for my family.
if I’m getting 2 tums up frum yu guyz, den auryte! lets go buss up Dennis Sadowski an his hooey for gettin in da way of UH Warriors.
