5 former Warriors sign deals; Graunke practices as No. 2

The NFL life goes on for five former Warriors.
Running back Reagan Mauia today signed a two-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Mauia was cut the past weekend by the Miami Dolphins. He returned to the Bay Area, but then was invited to try out for the Bengals. Fullback Jeremi Johnson is out for the season, and the Bengals were in need of a blocking back. For the season opener, the Bengals will move a tight end to the backfield.
Also, C.J. Hawthorne (Buffalo Bills), Tala Esera (Indianapolis Colts), Dane Uperesa (Colts) and Melila Purcell (Browns) were signed to practice squads.

Tyler Graunke today took all of the No. 2 quarterback’s reps — his first extensive workout since being reinstated last week.
Graunke looked sharp, with both his throwing and scrambling.
After he practice, he said: “I want to apologize to the people of Hawai‘i for letting them down.”
Graunke said he was grateful “for this opportunity.”

Quarterback Inoki Funaki and defensive tackle Tuika Tufaga are Kahuku High graduates.

Slotback Jon Medeiros played well against Florida.

Running back Jake Heun, who has not practiced since the first day of training camp because of a herniated disc, is close to returning.

Greg McMackin has imposed two two-day rules.
The first is that players are allowed a maximum 48 hours to reflect on the previous game.
The second is a player must practice — at the least — Wednesday or Thursday to be eligible to play in that weekend’s game.
The latter rule is essential for team morale. In past seasons, there were players who were allowed to skip practices all week but still play.

* * *

McMackin really did put great effort into preparing for the Florida game. Not only did he consult with a hydration specialist during training camp, he also used one of the 99 spots in the travel party for a nurse. Her main job was to administer IVs during the Florida game. About 10 players had IVs in the first half.

Happy birthday to Rich Miano and “Ferd” Lewis.

    Good Morning Gang!
Welcome back ST! I put that Warrior Whiteout poster in my 2 yr old son’s room. He yells “Go Warriors” when he looks at it.

    Good Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

    I like those rules.

  3. Stephen Tsai September 3, 2008 6:39 am

We have a similar rule at work, although because we’re old farts, it’s that our memory cells last only 48 hours.
    Now….where was I this past weekend ….?

  4. d1島 September 3, 2008 6:42 am

    Top 5!

Hmmm….ST. I think that rule applies to me too. Try balancing a checkbook with a tv remote control. lol

  6. d1島 September 3, 2008 6:44 am

Despite the rule Mack was very gracious answering questions during call the coach last night.

    OK now HiHo fo’ real….

    morning gang!

nice rules, no feel bad Stephen, my memory cells barely last 24 hours 😕

  8. 2left September 3, 2008 6:57 am

I wonder how strictly the “no practice, no play” rule will be enforced. Will Mack really hold Dan Kelly out of a game if he was nursing a strain during the week? Or in that case, would “practice” mean showing up at the field and doing some stretches?

Article about Mack on KHNL’s website.

And opening the season with one of the top teams in the country will only make them better.

“You improve the most between your first and second game, I’m glad we played a good football team, and now we have to correct from the mistakes we made.”

“We’re still going to win the WAC and we’re still going to win a Bowl game.”

Coach Mack also hopes fans will come out and support the team.

This fantasy sports site has UH’s D on their “recommended” list. It is nice for the D to get this type of deserved mention. Only 5 other defenses made their recommended list.

    Hawaii Warriors Defense

The Warriors’ season opener against the Florida Gators was by no means a good one; Hawaii looked absolutely lost in their second straight match up against a SEC foe, leading new head coach of the Warriors, Greg McMackin, to tell reporters he was “appalled” by the number of yards allowed by his defense and the ineffectiveness of his offense. Altogether, Florida netted over 400 yards of offense against McMackin’s squad, with over 250 coming at the hands of a substandard rushing attack for the Gators, which his surprising, given the level of player Hawaii has both along the line and at linebacker, one of the most proficient units in all of the WAC. The Warriors undoubtedly left the Sunshine State with hearts heavy and heads held low, but should nevertheless get a shot in the arm in Week Two as they face Weber State. The offense will need to keep Hawaii’s defensive players off the field more than they did against Florida and will have to limit turnovers in order to be successful in their second contest of the year; expect that that will be the case, however, as McMackin will have the Warriors well-prepared to make up for their poor play in Gainesville in the team’s first home game of 2008.

    Good Morning All! 🙂

  20. Garret September 3, 2008 7:24 am

Article about how the non-BCS conference teams are closing the gap with the BCS conference teams. It is great that the WAC had *two* wins over BCS conference teams…I remember what the WAC’s nonconference record was last year and how that hurt UH’s strength of schedule and BCS points.

If you were doubting that the gap between the schools in the six “guaranteed” BCS conferences and the five non-guaranteed conferences was narrowing, Week 1 of the season can serve as a proof.

A team from each of the so-called mid-major conferences beat a team from the big six. It was the first time that had ever happened, Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson said.

“The competitive gap is not as wide as the economic gap,” Benson said during the WAC’s weekly teleconference.

Of those five, the Sun Belt is annually the lowest-ranked conference and struggles the most with bigger schools, but Arkansas State came through on Saturday with an 18-14 victory at Texas A&M of the Big 12.

Conference USA posted one victory over a team from the big six (East Carolina defeated Virginia Tech), the MAC had one (Bowling Green over Pittsburgh), the Mountain West had one (Utah over Michigan) and the WAC had two (Louisiana Tech over Mississippi State and Fresno State over Rutgers).

“I think it’s even more significant, the magnitude is even greater, when, except for the Louisiana Tech game, the other five were all away games,” Benson said. “Last week I mentioned the importance of non-conference wins and signature wins, and Louisiana Tech and Fresno State certainly performed … well for us last night and Saturday to get us off to a very, very fine start.”

  21. Garret September 3, 2008 7:25 am

Major news out of the WAC in 43 minutes!

The WAC has scheduled a teleconference call for 11 a.m. today for what it called a “major announcement.”

It will more than likely be about the WAC’s TV contract with ESPN, but it could be bowl related.

The WAC has been in discussions with ESPN about a contract extension. The current contract runs through the 2009-10 season. There have been some media reports for the last two months that the two entities were close to an extension.

It also could be in regards to the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho. The ACC announced last year that it would end its association with the Humanitarian Bowl effective after the 2008 game, scheduled for Dec. 30. However, in last week’s teleconference, Benson said there was no progress in finding a replacement conference.

check your email, and good morning to DPK

  23. Garret September 3, 2008 7:26 am

Looks like Tomey found his QB for this season. This guy transferred from Cal but was injured during the offseason.

Meanwhile, at San Jose, coach Dick Tomey beamed about Kyle Reed, the Cal transfer who was taking third-team snaps in preseason. Reed led the Spartans’ comeback in a 13-10 win over UC Davis.

“People don’t understand what an amazing job he did,” Tomey said. “He hasn’t played a game in three years and nine months. … I’m not sure I’ve seen anything quite like what happened. He had so much poise, running and throwing, he did everything well.”

Reed, who missed spring drills with a broken foot, was 14-for-18 for 132 yards. He threw two TD passes in the second half, including the game winner from 17 yards out with 8 seconds to play.

  24. Garret September 3, 2008 7:28 am

Lots of interesting WAC tidbits in this article. I liked how this one pointed out that the starting QBs this week for Tomey and Mack were both #3 QBs a week ago!

San Jose State’s Kyle Reed and Hawaii’s Inoke Funaki both started the season No. 3 on their respective depth charts.
However, after impressive season-opening performances, they earned starting nods this week.

  25. Garret September 3, 2008 7:29 am

The Texas Tech vs. Nevada summary in USA Today mentions Colt.

Texas Tech at Nevada: Last year it was fun to see how many yards Colt Brennan could throw for Hawaii and whether it would put him in the Heisman race (it did). That mantle has passed to Graham Harrell of Texas Tech. He opened up last week by throwing for 536 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Mike Leach’s spread offense throws from anywhere at anytime.

    Bio for Da Beast.

A highly prized signee for the Wildcats. … Outstanding athletic ability. … Good enough to come in and see action as a first year freshman. … Strong lower body makes it hard to knock him off his feet.

Was rated the 110th best defensive lineman in the country by ESPN. … Ranked the 9th best player in the state of Hawai’i in 2007 by Rivals.com.

  27. Garret September 3, 2008 7:35 am

I’m really worried about the problems that Higgins will cause UH’s D. I’m sure that Mack, Cal, and the rest of the coaches will have the team prepared…but I’m sure that Higgins has been looking forward to this game for a long time!

Higgins was named the 2007 BIG SKY CONFERENCE NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR and HONORABLE MENTION All-Big Sky Conference. … Replaced Jimmy Barnes as the starting quarterback in the fourth game of the season.

Has great feet and the ability to scramble out of dire situations on the field.

  28. Garret September 3, 2008 7:38 am

Nice to read up on Weber State’s last game.

Trevyn Smith ran for four touchdowns as Weber State opened the season with 535 yards of offense in a 62-6 win over Montana Western on Thursday night.

Cameron Higgins completed 17 of 27 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats during three quarters of work.

  29. Garret September 3, 2008 7:40 am

Da Beast got a mention in this recap of Weber State’s game.

The two teams were almost even in total yards late in the first quarter. After the Wildcats scored on their opening possession, they had two straight three-and-outs. The Bulldogs were shockingly in position to tie the game when they drove to the Wildcats’ 3-yard line in the final seconds of the quarter.

But on the final play of the period, Weber State defensive tackle Ryan Eastman forced Montana-Western running back Derrick Pluff to fumble, and Linehan picked it up and returned it 94 yards for a touchdown. The score gave the Wildcats the game’s momentum, igniting them to blow the Bulldogs off the field as expected.

Quarterback Cameron Higgins was sharp, completing 17-of-27 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns.

Smith was the workhorse of the offense, as he rushed 15 times for 68 yards. He played for a little more than two quarters before redshirt freshman Justin White took his place in the lineup and gained 62 yards on 15 carries.

Nice to hear Miami’s coach mention Bess when talking about players that will be playing this season.

(On if it’s ok to have Ted Ginn returning kickoffs and punts while being the No. 1 receiver) “I think that in a perfect situation, you really wouldn’t want that, but I think if you have a guy labeled, ‘Hey, this is your returner and that was his job one way or the other. But our returners are going to come by other positional players. Ted, (Davone) Bess, those types of people.

(On if anybody’s emergence during training camp surprised him) “Yeah, that’s a good question. I think Davone Bess to me and what he did during the course of this training camp, coming from kind of where he came from, meaning the guy wasn’t drafted. He was a free agent player, to see what he did. I know Jeff (Ireland) gave kudos to Donald Thomas, but I would say Davone Bess is a guy that I thought did a nice job in this preseason camp and I also think Donald Thomas did an outstanding job. Those type of players, but Bess would be the guy I think for me.”

  32. Garret September 3, 2008 7:45 am

Local boy just had his contract purchased by the KC Royals.

The Royals will also purchase the contracts of first baseman Kila Ka’aihue, and right-handed relievers Devon Lowery and Yasuhiko Yabuta from the Triple-A club.

Ka’aihue, a 24-year old from Honolulu, Hawaii, had a breakout season in 2008. Between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha, he hit a combined .314 with 37 home runs and 100 RBI. The 37 homers were tied for 4th-most in the minors. Ka’aihue, who was recruited by the University of Nebraska but signed with the Royals after being selected by Kansas City in the 15th round of the 2002 draft, hit .316 with eleven home runs and 21 RBI in 33 games down the stretch with Omaha. He led the minors with 104 walks on the season – compared to just 67 strikeouts – and his .456 on-base percentage was tied for first, while his .628 slugging percentage ranked second among full-season minor leaguers.

    Morning Tsaikos!

Good to be home & see the blog & ST back! Love the pics!

The humidity in Florida wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, until I was walking from the bus to the Hawaii tailgates with the sun blazing. Thank goodness for some rain before the game & then cloud cover from about halftime. The Florida fans we talked to (before & after the game) were really nice. Maybe they didn’t see us as a threat or maybe we were just lucky.

Don’t know if this was already mentioned, but the Florida band isn’t allowed to play on the field. They played the quickest national anthem I’ve heard in a while from behind the visitors’ benches. At halftime they played from their endzone seats.

The stadium is impressive. We had really good seats – 2nd level, 2 rows from the bottom. The team did the ha’a right in front of us. Quite an experience to watch a college football game where the attendance was 90,575.

Back to work & sorting through the mess that is my desk…

Hey welcome back ST- I was having blog withdrawals!

I like those new rules. I think it’s good that Coach Mack is stricter with the team. I can’t wait for Saturday’s game. BTW can anyone tell me what the deal is for parking at the stadium??? I’m not a season ticket holder so does that mean I can’t buy a parking pass for the main lot?

  42. Jack Flash September 3, 2008 9:03 am

S Malai- from what i’ve heard, just the inner circle parking is reserved. The outer lots (upper and lower Halawa etc.) are available first come first served.

Parking in the lower lot opens at 130. It is open to everyone. The open parking lot closer to the stadium opens at 230 and is open to everyone. The Parking in the “ring” right around the stadium is where a pass is required.

That’s good news about Graunke. It’s not very surprising, either. Between he and Inoke, our QB spot is going to be very solid. Brent and Greg are great players too, but they need a little more time in the system.

  84. U2B Baller September 3, 2008 11:12 am

    Hey Stephen,
Question, when a player is asked to move to another posoition and still hasn’t received a #’d jersey for practice what are the coaches telling him?
If you have any insight on this please comment. I just think its unfair to that player.

  85. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 3, 2008 11:19 am

    morning tsaikos,

cant tell you how happy tyler is taking some snaps. if he is the best qb we got my gut feeling says go with him regardless of his shortcomings. my brain says well you know its about character, descipline, blah yada blah yada……i am hoping to win out the rest of the season…if tyler can do that for us, then go with him regardless of what he does….yeah yeah i know its selfish and maybe wrong.

on another note, ST does it make a hell of a lot of difference that Coach Mack has never been a college level head coach before in his ability to make calls under the gun i.e. with the pressure and time sensitivies within the course of a game?

  86. al September 3, 2008 11:21 am

  91. Stephen Tsai September 3, 2008 11:51 am

    U2B Baller:
I think it’s just a matter of the equipment staff being overworked.
The roster really expanded this week, with about 20 players added, and UH had been out of town for a week. It’s a matter of time to get the numbers put on.
    There’s no concern now.
But if there’s no number on game day, well, then that would be a problem.

  92. Stephen Tsai September 3, 2008 11:52 am

Not to say that I’m trying to match-make Calvin from Kona with the Daily Dish, but can somebody list Calvin’s best qualities in a couple of sentences?

Where can I find info about parking around the stadium?

  97. al September 3, 2008 11:59 am

i tell you….coach mac is a special kind of guy.

    first,
he takes on a job that comes with a target on his back. yah, the spotlight is on constantly.

    second,
he cleans house, sets his rules up. discipline is installed first and starting with the projected starting qb he employs his rule and stands by them.

    third,
he does have tough love, but he has the heart of the Man upstairs by still offering those who comply a second chance.

    fourth,
he is a workaholic and a very astute manager of the game called football. evidence the amount of preparation he put in planning and leaving no stone unturned including a nurse on a road trip that no one else would ever will duplicate in the future. that will be an ncaa record for longest trek for a college football game. put that in the book.

    fifth,
he is a man of his word. the players play for him and the university, something that he instills every day at practice.

    sixth,
he truly cares about his team, his family, and now, his state. he exudes the passion.

    seventh,
he will be and the university will be reaping the rewards of this man’s character. i really believe that he will take this program to the next level. he has waited all his life to be here in this state, in this university, coaching this team.

    (…to be continued)

my fellow DMHS alum, I beat you to the 48-13 pick already, sorry.

  100. al September 3, 2008 12:04 pm

    ….continued

he has the back of this state. now all we gotta do is show up. buy a ticket attend the game.

i was a life long fan, well i still am, who used to sit in the old termite palace as a kid. for the longest time since moving to the aloha stadium i would watch the tv broadcasts and attend an occasional game. enter ppv and i would sit in my comfy sofa with all the comforts of home, yah, like gigi i had the ac going on, the big screen, the familiar restrooms, surround sound blaring, cold ones at arms reach, pupus, and the like.

last year because of my fellow tsaikos and the constant urging of one stephen tsai, i started attending more games i even paid scalpers prices for the boise st and washington games. i even flew in my game partner from the west coast for those great games.

this year, i said no turning back, not on my warriors. yah, i passed up the ppv package and bought season tickets. (that beats jumping over the stadium walls at the termite palace, besides i would get stuck).

so, i am telling you tsaikos if you truly are one like the rest of us nuts here then you gotta take the next step. hop the wall, be there at the opening day game. if you come to one game it is this one. support the boys in a moment when they really need us behind them. because they really do.

this game could very well define the kind of team that we will be for the rest of year.

    be there!!!!

    …nuff said.

In most college systems the head coach is like the CEO. It is the coordinators that make the offensive and defensive calls. JJ was one of the few head coaches to call the offense plays but it was Coach Mack making the defensive calls.

Cinci’s Mauk lost another round of appeal for his 6th year. Looks like UH will not be facing him this year. However, by the time Cinci comes to Aloha Stadium their new starter will have gotten a lot of experience…

Ben Mauk learned today that his request for a sixth year to complete his four years of college eligibility has been rejected by the NCAA for the fifth time overall and the third time within the last 26 days. This time it was the Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee that rejected the former University of Cincinnati quarterback’s appeal after allowing Mauk to plead his case last Thursday in a teleconference. It’s the second time the committee has ruled against Mauk, who has now exhausted his avenues for appeal within the NCAA.

  124. da princess' classmate September 3, 2008 12:39 pm

i have distinct feeling that florida’s d will not be the best we face this year, heard cincy’s is a monster as well. would’ve been very tough to beat them w/ Mauk, will still be tough to beat them w/o him, but that’s 11 games away.

  125. Garret September 3, 2008 12:39 pm

Article about the WAC’s new deal with ESPN…I really wonder what the dollar figure is! My guess is that the MWC will get 2x to 3x the money from their deal, but the WAC will have far more exposure because ESPN >> mtn/CBS Collge Sports (or whatever CSTV is called now).

WAC president Karl Benson said the deal has helped elevate the WAC’s status.

“For the past five years, WAC football has benefited greatly from the exposure it has received from ESPN,” he said. “The WAC values its relationship with the ‘leader in college sports’ and is confident that this extension will allow WAC football to continue to be a prominent player in the BCS.”

Benson also said he’s pleased the deal gives more exposure to women’s sports.

“This deal will finally get the WAC’s men’s basketball teams the type of national exposure it deserves,” Benson said. “And finally, for the first time ever, women’s basketball regular season games will be aired on the ESPN networks along with the championship contests for volleyball and women’s basketball.”

So Coach Mac has coached at quite bit of different places.

    University of Arizona
    Aloha High School
    Western Oregon State U.
    U. of Idaho
    San Jose State U.
    Stanford U.
    Denver Gold(USFL)
    Oregon Tech U.
    U. of Utah
    U.S. Naval Academy
    U. of Miami(Fl.)
    Seattle Seahawks
    U. of Hawaii
    Texas Tech U.
    San Francisco 49ers

I think by now, all those experiences should make him a pretty decent coach. I think that I’ll put away my “football for dummies” book, and trust that Coach Mac and his staff may know a bit more about football than me and my drinking buddies.

    Garret –

You beat me to it. I just read the email and was about to call you. Why do horrible things happen to great people? I spoke with Cliff a couple weeks ago and that was the absolute final alternative for everyone’s safety.

Bloggers – I’m going to coordinate an email with Garret and Cliff to fill in the details. It’s not for this forum.

    LET’S TALK STADIUM:

Last year, we were talking about stadium and trying to figure out if a smaller stadium could be built on the UH campus.

I was talking story with one of the UH people today and he came up with a gem of an idea.

Bishop Estate owns most of the land around that area (Varsity Theatre, Puck’s Alley etc.) and would like to upgrade the area. The Legislature doesn’t have the $$ to handle acquisition, the building of the infrastructure and stadium

Enter a deal with BE/Kam whereby it funds the project, in turn, UH will admit all qualified Hawaiian students in to the UH system including Manoa and waiver of tution.

Another idea floated around – the story in HA today about upgrading Honolulu Harbor. Work out an arrangement with DLNR whereby the UH can pit up an aquatic center – sailing team, canoe, phys ed, for the students, alumni, faculty and would be home to the Hawaiian Voyaging Society. If there is a move towards such a center, there are some people out there that could put up $$$.

    Comments?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Rich Miano and Ferd Lewis!!

I’m going to TRY to make it to this weekends game with the family. Am looking forward to watching UH play and also Bulla’s and Lyns son “da beast”.
What time is the game anyway?

  168. (Jesse) James September 3, 2008 2:18 pm

Prayers for Rainbow Cliff and family…God be with you my friend.

R-cliff – Thoughts and prayers be with you.

  170. homey ⑤ September 3, 2008 2:26 pm

Tommui – I wouldn’t build a smaller stadium. The Gov already started the ball rolling with refurbishing Aloha Stadium. Plus if a stadium is built on or near the Manoa campus we may have to do our tailgating in Palolo.

  171. homey ⑤ September 3, 2008 2:30 pm

EXTRA TICKET FOR WEBER ST GAME

I have an extra single ticket for the game this Saturday compliments of g-nalo. If anyone needs one, email me at stretch6592 at yahoo and I can arrange to give it to you. First come, first served.

  173. homey ⑤ September 3, 2008 2:35 pm

Stretch – What happened? G-nalo’s date jojo’d him?

  174. jojo ® September 3, 2008 2:37 pm

What’s wrong with Palolo? Get pretty people living in Palolo.

  175. (Jesse) James September 3, 2008 2:37 pm

Tommui…I agree with Homey. I wouldn’t build a smaller stadium. An on-campus stadium would be a nightmare as far as parking is concerned. Maybe KS/BE should look at developing the area into smaller shops, cafes, and student housing. Really brighten up the place and make it look less run-down. More student housing will allow more students to live on-campus (even those who live on Oahu who want to get out on their own for a while). The less of a commuter school you make it, the more students may feel an attachment to the school, which could possibly result in more students attending games at both the stadium and SSC…and possibly result in more students being willing to donate a few dollars to the University once they graduate.

I mean really, with over 200,000 graduates from UH, raising money shouldn’t be a problem and the campus could be world class and one of the most beautiful campuses in the world. If every graduate just donated $5, that would equate to $1 million for UH. Imagine if everyone could donate $100…UH would be flush with cash for resources and facilities. However, for some reason, UH graduates don’t like to give back to the school. I know that I donate money every year to UH as do many others. I also donate money to my high school. But many people I know only donate money to their high school and could care less about UH. Truly sad.

  176. (Jesse) James September 3, 2008 2:39 pm

Stretch..where is the location of this ticket??

  177. homey ⑤ September 3, 2008 2:39 pm

  178. al September 3, 2008 2:39 pm

homey, we could block off the streets of palolo.

    Little help?

  183. homey ⑤ September 3, 2008 2:48 pm

Going back to the Warriors, hopefully after the game this Saturday, both teams come away with no injuries. Then the Warriors will be at near full strength as they take on OSU and Weber ST will be ready for their homecoming game against Dixie St.

Mav – What do you need from them? Can you get it from another retailer?

  188. homey ⑤ September 3, 2008 2:56 pm

Homey, calling around. Video card for the PC. Office Max get, but twice the price from Comp USA.

I don’t light my cigars anymore with those Benjamins. The savings could equate to a one way ticket for a Warrior game.

Snagged and frayed eh? As far as my polos, I try not to wear them on a gameday atmosphere just for going out and stuff.

But yeah, they’re holding up well.

Most recently I bought a UH UA “workout” tshirt when I thought the UA UH jerseys would not be ready for this Saturday, it was the funny one they released which is green but has an “H” logo with tapa print almost written in “invisible ink”. Even upclose it just looks like a plain green shirt.

I’ll wear it on Saturday while I am grilling as I don’t want BBQ smoke all over my new jersey.

    Time for eye lid check.

That start time in the morning comes awefully quickly. I just do not see how the district is saving money by starting classes at 7:20 — additional heat and lighting.

Besides all of the studies clearly indicate teens need more and later sleep in order to fully function.

Hmmmm, I wonder if the district is taking any lessons from the DOE? HA!

Good night! See you folks tomorrow!!!

I don’t know if a-joe is as interested in Lelie now that he’s no longer a Niner. But here’s some more news on Lelie and his signing w/ the Raiders. Let’s hope that Lelie can contribute to his new team.

Lelie is following a well-worn path – Cutdown day wasn’t headline making for the Bay Area’s NFL franchises, except for those 49ers followers who wondered why wide receiver Ashley Lelie ever played for their team in the first place.

In an uninspiring span of 15 games in 2007, Lelie started three times and caught 10 passes for 115 yards. For this, the 49ers gave him $2 million in guaranteed bonus money. In addition, Lelie’s total haul last season in base salary and assorted roster and workout bonuses was $660,000.

It’s safe to conclude that in Santa Clara, Lelie was pretty much a free-agent flub, at least in the mind of coach Mike Nolan.

Football Cards; More Than Just A Hobby
“The top rookies in this year’s class, in terms of football card sales, are: Darren McFadden, Matt Ryan, Felix Jones, Rashard Mendenhall, Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, Kevin Smith and surprisingly, at least to Lee, is Washington Redskins sixth-round rookie Colt Brennan. Brennan’s card sales have been so strong on eBay that it has forced Beckett to reflect his popularity in its magazine as a top-priced rookie.

“I’m very surprised by the market for Brennan,” Lee said. “It could be that there’s a secret band of Hawaii collectors out there that we don’t know about, but I think collectors are likely still in awe of his huge college numbers. Another thing that’s helped him is that Jason Campbell is not a rock-solid starter in Washington, so Brennan could get a shot [to start] in the future. Having said all that, I fully expect the action on his cards to fade significantly once the regular season begins and collectors concentrate on other rookies who are playing.”

  241. brew808 September 3, 2008 5:42 pm

Oops – there’s quite a bit more on Lelie in that Nancy Gay column in the above post. Lelie (he’ll be #87) had several possible teams interested in signing him after his release from the Niners…. 😀

    24. Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins are a much improved team over last year, thanks to the Jets releasing Chad Pennington, now the Dolphins starting QB. Pennington will keep the seat warm for another Chad — Henne — who had one of the better preseasons of any of the drafted Quarterbacks (right up there with Matt Ryan and Colt Brennan). The defense has some building blocks as well as Bill Parcells went out and found cheap place holding talent to play as he rebuilds the Dolphins through the draft. The offensive line, led by C Samson Satele, could be a strength for the Dolphins in 2008.

  261. el guapo September 3, 2008 6:27 pm

    I was intrigued with Tom’s post #166.

I understand (J)J’s concern about parking. Well, parking at the stadium is already a nightmare. At least in Moiliili people can easily walk or bus to the game.

I’m going to take gas for my suggestion, but what the hell. Maybe a smaller stadium is what we need. I can’t imagine what goes on at other schools where they sell out 90-100 thousand every week. We’re never going to do that here unless we have a smaller stadium.

Imagine if we have 25,000 rabid fans willing to pay $2,000 or more for their season tickets. That’s $50 million in the bank, way larger than the current athletic budget now, and doesn’t even include pay-per-view. That’s just economics – instead of increasing the demand, reduce the supply.

The question is, do we want accessibility to attend games at a reasonable price, or be players in the big show? At some point, we and JD have to decide whether we want to be the big fish of the WAC and go toe-to-toe with Boise and Fresno, or to compete with the really big boys. A lot of us won’t be able to afford to go to games if we want to be real contenders under this scenario, so I really don’t know what the answer is.

Ralph – Yes on Forney. Here’s salary info on practice squad players

the minimum salary from 2008 to 2010 is $5,200 per week (2008-2010)[1] for 17 weeks, or $88,400 per season, in comparison to the NFL minimum rookie salary of $285,000.

ST – Here’s my (running) list of Warrior players currently with NFL Teams the day before the start of the 2008 season:

    Peters – Bears
    Mauia – Bengals
    Hawthorne – Bills
    Purcell – Browns
    Laboy – Cardinals
    Forney – Chargers
    Esera, Uperesa – Colts
    McBriar – Cowboys
    Satele, Bess – Dolphins
    Elam – Falcons
    Ulbrich, Sopoaga – Niners
    Manuwai – Jaguars
    Hunter – Jets
    Alama-Francis – Lions
    Tinoisamoa – Rams
    Lelie – Raiders
    Colt – Redskins

    I haven’t updated on non-UH players from Hawaii. 😀

  271. BowsForever September 3, 2008 7:17 pm

Hooray for Graunke! Yes, he fell off the bus for a little while with his academic issues, but according to Mack, he got himself academically eligible again all on his own. The apology to the state really wasn’t necessary, man — I’m just glad you took responsibility and refocused yourself. Re-earn the team’s respect and most importantly, get your degree. You can DO it!

As for Mauia, lucky break for him. (I wonder why Nasti Nate hasn’t gotten more chances in the NFL, sigh.) Work hard and try not to (allegedly) hit people without good reason. Make us proud!

    Hey Brew –

Remember the old days when the only ex-Rainbow (pre-Warriors) in the NFL was Golden Richards? My, have the pastures gotten greener.

My prediction is that Tyler will be starting games along with Inoki. They know the offense. Give GA and BR some time to learn. But, the receivers really need to step it up. TOO MANY dropped passes.

who are the eight remaining warriors from the 2004 recruiting class?

  282. Garret September 3, 2008 8:26 pm

    brew808,

Thank you for keeping track of where the Warriors are in the NFL! I’m going to be off the blog a lot now because of a phone call I got today…so I can’t keep up with that stuff anymore. So, I get my info from the blog instead of looking it up myself!

  283. Garret September 3, 2008 8:27 pm

Looks like Samson has a challenge to start the season.

While Long’s NFL debut will be important, I suspect the offensive linemen who will face the biggest challenge during the season opener will be center Samson Satele, who will line up across from three-time Pro Bowler Kris Jenkins, who is all of 350 pounds and cat quick. Jenkins should be a challenge for the interior linemen for at least 35 snaps, or until that South Florida sun gets at him.

    Stretch,

I will unfortunately not be able to make it to the Portland tailgate with the Tsaikos. I’m going to be with my parents at the Panda Travel tailgate at the LaSells Stewart Center which is across from the Reser Stadium. My parents bought me a ticket and it will make sense for me to not drive to Portland for the tailgate when I’ll be staying in Corvallis.

  288. brew808 September 3, 2008 9:07 pm

al-ski – I don’t know the answer…. so I’ll cheat. Here’s my list of all the “old” guys on the team:

    Bear Ah Soon
    Keoni Steinhoff
    Lafu Tuioti-Mariner
    David Farmer
    Alonso Chopp (not recruited?)
    Tyler Graunke
    Dan Kelly (Hmmm… I don’t think he reshirted…)
    Keala Watson
    Fale Laeli
    CJ Allen-Jones
    Khevin Peoples
    Desmond Thomas
    Dane Porlas
    Keao Monteilh

And, maybe you were trying to be “tricky” so here are two guys that went on LDS missions. They may be the oldest players on the team:
    Inoke Funaki
    Viliami Nauahi

Okay, there’s more than 8 names, and but you didn’t phrase the question to list “exactly” the eight players…. Hey – when you can’t aim, sometimes the shot-gun approach works….maybe. 😆

  302. Jason September 3, 2008 9:58 pm

Ahem, I was NOT working on an integral. It was this problem:

Prove or disprove: If n is a positive integer, then n = p + a², where a is an integer and p is prime or p = 1.

The guy tutoring my Math 412 class helped me out. Cool dude, he’s a grad student, and he’s in my Math 454 class too.

Anyways, I had a meeting on campus at 5:30, so I didn’t get home and start blogging. I was lurking via my iPod touch, though.

Glad to hear about all the former Warriors getting spots on practice squads. But Forney is not on the practice squad — he’s a veteran, so he’s not eligible. He’s on the Chargers’ active roster. I’m particularly watching him — I’m shocked at the reports that his play diminshed so fast. He was a first alternate for the Pro Bowl in 2005.

    Aloha, Tsaikos!

Been lurking today but now is my usual time to post.

Wanted to share a thought I had about our coach’s strategy. I really see Coach Mack taking the long view, building a base that will take us beyond where June Jones got us.

I see that in his outreach to the entire state, and all the high school coaches, in his successful recruiting of local kids that normally would have gone away, and even in the way he called the Florida game.

A lot of fans, particularly on some of the other Hawaii blogs, are upset that he didn’t start Inoki, but I think that what he did was very smart. It may be because now that Colt has been up with the Redskins, I have become more aware of how the NFL coaches look at things, but what strikes me is that Coach Mack and his crew are viewing these out-of-conference games somewhat like NFL coaches view the pre-season.

These games before we start the WAC are excellent opportunities to evaluate personnel, tighten up the offense rhythm/chemistry, and tweak the defense. I don’t mean they are not playing to win, but in some part of their thinking, they are looking at what works and what doesn’t work and pointing towards those big games against Nevada, Fresno, and Boise State.

I expect Inoki to start and have a good game against Weber State, but I would not be surprized if Tyler and Rausch also get significant time in the second half in much the same way that Rausch and Inoki got in to the Florida second half.

I would like to beat Oregon State, but I really want to challenge for the WAC championship, and especially to beat both Fresno and Boise State on their home fields. I saw the promise in the Florida game that if the offense could gel, we could be much better than the pundits expect.

    Well, I believe!! Go Warriors!!
And esme and out for tonight…

Lopaka ~ I agree with you on several points.

    1. Coach Mack is building a great foundation for the future in several places. On campus with the team, his coaching staff, the physical plant, and the student support.

    2. Coach is also building support off campus with increased funding from the state, donors, and fundraisers.

    3. More importantly is his emphasis on recruitment within the local schools, down to the middle school level. That is going to be a huge plus in his drive to field the best players in the state.

    4. Whatever the choices are for Coach Mack to make on the field are his perogative. After all, he’s da MAN! All we have to do is support him, period! I don’t want to play his hand. He’s the man who gets paid over a million bucks a year to make the program work, who am I to second guess and sharp shoot his business?

    5. SOS was the bully cry of the press last season. They said we were playing “cream puff” teams. That’s all a bunch of hooey! We went undefeated, nobody else did, ’nuff sed!

    6. So yes Lopaka, you are correct, we do have an opportunity to practice what we preach with the Non-Con teams….and save ourselves to batter the WAC teams on our way to another Championship Title.

…and on that note, I think I will call it a day, and get to bed. Nyetol!

I just saw a Colt Brennan autographed UH Jersey sell for over $400 on ebay a couple of days ago. The week before Colt Brennan autographed Redskin jerseys sold for $170 and $200+.

I think the UH jersey sold for more $ because supposedly it was an actual game jersery worn by Colt.

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

I guess I am finally realizing what it’s like to be busy at work again. No more practices and not too much checking out the blog.

I will not have time to stop by for the tailgate this weekend since we’ll be coming late. But everyone is welcome to stop by and say Hi to me while walking into the game. I will be in the top row on the left hand side of Gate 5 when you are walking in, parking 4D. I bought my new black UH tent so it should be up.

See everyone later, I’ll try to check in sometime today.

    Morning Stretch!

Awwwww…not even for a little bit?

  333. d1島 September 4, 2008 5:46 am

    Great Morning All.

    Lopaka43,
Given that UH is in the WAC and that Coach Mack has stated a goal is to win the WAC and get into a bowl, I think yours is a fair assessment of the “preseason strategy”.

For teams like our last opponent who have NC aspirations though, such a strategy would never work. That’s the beauty of CFB in its present state, without a play-off system, EVERY game is crucial. Come Sept. 14, it’s almost a certainty that USC or Ohio State’s season is kaput in terms of a NC regardless of their conference outcome.

  334. d1島 September 4, 2008 5:51 am

    Have a great day erryboddy!
