Practice No.12

Inoke Funaki continues to impress as a running back.
A coach marveled at Funaki’s abiity to “get skinny” on rushes, vernacular for being able  to run without ever getting hit squarely.
Also during today’s pactice:
• Cornerback Jeramy Bryant had the gutsiest play, taking on center John Estes on a sweep play. Bryant is expected to win one of the corner jobs.
• The most impressive play was defensive end John Fonoti chasing down slotback Ryan Henry, who had at least a 3-yard head start on the rest of the defense. Henry can run 40 yards in 4.5 seconds.
• Slotback Rick Taylor was on crutches with an injury to his right ankle. He will undergo X-rays today.
• Defensive tackle Quentin Beaver did not practice because of strained rotator cuff in hiis right shoulder. He suffered the injury last week, then aggravated it during the past Saturday’s scrimmage.

* * *

Today was media guide day. Players filled out info forms that will be used in the media guide. They also posed for pictures. Two rules: 1) shower first (they took turns wearing H-logo shirts), and 2) no jewelry. Safety Lametrius Davis had to remove his four ear studs.

    ST:

JMHO, but it seems that someone/body at Baseball America must think much more highly of Sac State than Nevada.

UH loses to Nevada, at Nevada, and gets dumped out of top 25. Next week, UH takes 3 of 4 at home over Sac State and climbs to #20!!!!!!

Is that respect? Just great to see the Rainbow baseball being rejuvenated and back to prominence.

Great game with BaseBows yesterday! Congrats on a share of the lead in the WAC!!

midori7 – I think that you are going to have to stay home, ’cause Vinnie hits HRs when you aren’t there.

Koakane – on the WAC site is says BSB not MSB…which stands for Mahu Softball…I think Pride explained it to you and gave you some of the pitching wrist action requirements for that league.

Stretch’s FAVORITE player for Sac State…definitely Blake Crosby.

morning every1…kudos to da baseball team, 7 runs total iirc correctly given up by the starters. not too shabby at all. if they can keep it up and we can get consistent production from garcia, montplasiar, morford, roquemore, and van dornum, watch out…

on the other hand, big thumbs down to kkea 1420, how you gonna not bring uncle don to las cruces for a top 20 team. inexcusable, imho

    Hello Rob25.

No worry about the rankings. As long as the Bows take care of business in the WAC then it’s hello NCAA Tourney. If not then hopefully the committee will see them as a worthy tourney participant and award them an at-large invite.

  34. Pride. April 20, 2009 11:37 am

John Fonoti should be promoted for post-season honors. My feeling is that Fonoti is a game changer. Some athletes will change games because of their speed and atleticsm. Fonoti changes games because of the way he hits you. Once you get hit by him, you will do whatever it takes not to get hit by him again. He will change what offensive players do throughout the course of the game. I think Kazz would refer to it as “fear and intimidation”. Opponents will shake and shudder when they feel him in the vicinity. It’s difficult to focus if you’re afraid of someone. If he ever learns to play in the “unconcious competence” quadrant, he will be a force to reckon with at this and the next level.

  35. warriorfanny2 April 20, 2009 11:39 am

“getting skinny” is a knack, Inoke, no doubt learned from being a QB. No different than slippin jabs and punches for a boxer, only thing u do with your bod.
but, yes, many RBs at UH somehow didnt learn or werent taught and if u do grasp the idea you will live longer.
Kealoha Pilares has improved but, yikes he was getting battered in his frosh year by not “angling” before contact–good stuff on Funake.

  49. warriorfanny2 April 20, 2009 11:53 am

homey, yes n no. some runners have natural instincts to avoid square hits and others learn through hard-knocks.
Also, it is a matter of degree, on a scale of 1-10.
kealoha as I mentioned learned from year-one to year-2 to avoid taking big blows by duckin or twisting or divin. when you’re hit u keep moving. but yes, it can be learned.

  50. Pride. April 20, 2009 11:53 am

interesting about Tony Robbins, I would have to defer to LP because that would have been back in the ’70’s and I don’t know how old Tony Robbins would have been back then….hmmmmmm

and the last time i tried to ‘get skinny’, i was wedged between my car door and a Dodge P/U truck that thought the lines in the parking lot were for everyone else….talk about a ‘compromising’ situation, haha. good thing can laugh now, couldn’t at that moment.

  159. Jason April 20, 2009 3:55 pm

letsgowarriors: Sounded like a question about the returning guys who are working at new positions. Think Stutz just mentioned Lane as a returning guy, even though he didn’t move positions. That’s what I thought, at least.

  160. Garret April 20, 2009 3:56 pm

Article going into depth on why Miami traded Samson. Amazing that their judgement about Samson having trouble blocking Jenkins comes down to *two* plays that Samson was 1-on-1 blocking against him.

Satele’s run metrics from 2008. He did fairly well on yards per attempt on his 132 POA blocks; Dolphin ballcarriers gained 711 yards (5.4 YPA), and his success percentage was 79.5%. An 80% POA win mark is the rule of thumb acceptable benchmark for an offensive lineman, and since centers as a whole tend to have lower POA win totals than do other offensive linemen, that means Satele’s totals, while not great, certainly grade him out as a decent run blocker. He did give up four sacks, but two of those were coverage sacks, so his overall pass blocking didn’t seem to be an issue either.

In the sixteen POA runs Satele had against Jenkins, Dolphins runners gained only 48 yards (3.0 YPA). Satele also lost three of those battles, so his POA win percentage was only 81.3%, or just slightly higher than his overall mark. That sounds good, but it is also skewed by the fact that Satele received double-team help (either a combination block or a pure double-team block) against Jenkins 11 times. He lost two of the five single-block POA runs, and it was probably that 60.0% POA win total that told the Dolphins that they needed to make a move.

    Attention: Tsaiko Para Legal Beagles

    Re: Hawaiian Airlines, et al.

Have any of you ever noticed that when you have to change a flight departure time at the last minute, HA is one of the airlines that nails you with an additional charge of no less than 50 bucks? Even if it is only the return portion of your trip!

However, when they change your departure time on both ends of your reserved R/T, they expect you to take it or cancel it with no questions asked? Any request for an upgrade, or any discount of 50 bucks per ticket is scoffed at. For 3 tickets, we are talking $150 for one way cancellation, or $300 for R/T.

They don’t care that you have plans at the distant end that involve arriving at a certain time. They don’t care that it causes other people who are meeting you at a certain time to have to alter their plans. They don’t care that you had a rental car in place for pick-up, or lodging to check in at a specific time.

What can I…Kekoa Q. Public…do to make things Pono? (besides using deadly force). I thought there was a “Passenger’s Bill of Right’s” that some smart alecky lawyers put together to thwart the airlines from bamboozling the passengers like this?!

Anyone else traveling to Vegas for the UH game had better keep a close watch on their ‘confirmed’ reservations from here on out.

  163. Garret April 20, 2009 4:03 pm

He lost two of the five single-block POA runs, and it was probably that 60.0% POA win total that told the Dolphins that they needed to make a move.

Most times the center gets some help from a guard on running plays against elite NTs in the NFL. NTs get the elite tag when they cannot be dislodged by a single blocker. Blocking Jenkins successfully 3 out of 5 times when they were 1-on-1 is probably a good percentage for an NFL center, and the 81.3% overall success vs. Jenkins is well above the NFL average.

Kekoa – I think *all* the airlines do the same thing. I have many stories about flight cancellations in mid-trip. United charged me an extra $100 per tix ($300 total) to change “routes” – from MIA-DEN-HNL to MIA-DEN-SFO-HNL, and in the end, we skipped the DEN-SFO leg anyway and went straight through from DEN. Never did get our money back. 👿 BTW, did I mention these were “free” tixs?

  167. Jason April 20, 2009 4:18 pm

One time, my Dad (who was 300+ lbs and had to squeeze into a seat), my Mom, and I sat in a plane for over an hour, waiting for our red eye flight to take off. Finally they told us that the problem couldn’t be fixed, and that the flight would be delayed to the early morning. While we had the luxury of returning home to sleep for four hours, all we got was one voucher for a cab. Yeah, we used that to return, but what about going back to the airport? And it’s not like that voucher was worth much, when you consider we live in Salt Lake. That was a $6 cab ride back then. Not to mention, we had to wake up my sister and tell them about the change so they could meet us at the right time.

How the heck am I supposed to teach, and make the flight time if school gets out at 2:30p and SEA is an hour away!?!?

I called the airline and they told me I could change my flight but it would cost me more. HUH?

Hawaii a cinderella-candidate to host a regional site?

Well, its still 5 weeks until the NCAA selection committee announces the 64-team baseball tournment, but ESPN’s Jeremy Mills has Hawaii marked as a cinderella-candidate to host a regional site.
Mills does a weekly survey and named Hawaii as a possible site if several others dont pan out.
Currently he projects Hawaii to win the WAC Tournament and the only WAC team to be selected in the 64-team field.
Hawaii is projected to play in the Baton Rouge Tournament.

Baton Rouge Regional: LSU, Hawaii, Boston College, Southern

    wafan #170:

    What airline you flying? Alaska?

Regardless, check your airline’s Contract of Carriage. If they initiated the flight time change, given that 3 hours is quite a stretch in time difference, in some instances you might be able to either:

    a. Ask to be placed on a different flight at no additional charge.
    b. Receive a full refund.

You probably already exhausted your options, but that’s just something that came to mind.

  185. wafan April 20, 2009 5:22 pm

    CRW . . .

Thanks for the heads up. I just got off the phone with one of my girls who works for Alaska. She’s checking into options for me. But, it does not look real good right now since they actually cancelled the ~6p flight because of low seat sales. The option seems to be an even later 9p flight.

You would think that five months out they would leave things be until it got closer. Interesting.

  186. d1島 April 20, 2009 5:23 pm

    Stephen,

Is there any possibility of a QB controversy coming out of Spring?

  187. Jason April 20, 2009 5:39 pm

Someone (I think Curveball?) did mention on Saturday that LWJ had his ribs wrapped.

  188. Garret April 20, 2009 5:39 pm

    Liz,

The coaches are not worried about surprising the first team UH plays this season…UH opens with Central Arkansas. The coaches need to find the best players for the offense, and then they need that group to develop some chemistry together.

  189. Garret April 20, 2009 5:41 pm

Too bad to hear about LWJ possibly being injured. It is good that the Warriors have depth at RB, but it is sad to think about how his promising career never seems to be able to get going. An injury now could drop him down the final Spring depth chart, which would make it tough for him in the Fall when the new players arrive.

Hmm, good point, letsgowarriors. I really do like Mana’s ability to run, he’s got some good speed.

And yeah, if there’s one thing Mack is terrible at, it’s speaking to the public. It was nice to see Mack at the Nā Koa lunches, but I preferred seeing the assistants; they did a much better job at breaking down the film. 😀

Jason ~ After the scrim on Sat., LWJ came in front of us to meet his girl and show her his *injury.* When he lifted his jersey (Koamahu would’ve passed out) he showed her a bruise just below his left rib cage. I’m sure it’s one of those irritating injuries that is bothersome everytime you move the torso in any direction…or laugh!

    Not!

    3-9 after 7.
    2-11 when trailing after 6.
    4-9 after 5.
    7-9 after 4.
    6-7 after 2 and 4-4 when trailing after 1.

The success this year has been in getting a lead early on clutch hitting and holding the lead on strong pitching.

The LA Times’ draft preview mentions Bess when talking about Miami’s first-round pick this year.

They could also use a wide receiver, even though Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess have far exceeded expectations.

  228. Garret April 20, 2009 9:14 pm

Amazing that this player could be drafted this weekend despite all the wrong turns he took.

For every NFL draft hotshot, there are far more guys like Ryan Del Rosal. He’s a six-foot-five and 311-pound offensive tackle from Miami who didn’t play organized football until 11th grade and played college ball at Division II Dixie State in Utah.

Now he’s finally getting noticed by league scouts. And not just because of his arm-length patriotic tattoo or his long, flowing hair. It’s because of his agility, his speed (just under 5.0 seconds in the 40), and his ability to bench-press 225 pounds 35 times in a row with relative ease. His best lift is 455 pounds.

He didn’t have any college scholarship offers upon graduation, partly because of his borderline grades, so he went to Miami Dade College for a semester. He signed with FIU under then-coach Don Strock but landed on academic probation and left the team.

I don’t want to live the rest of my life wondering if I could have made it.”

So, he went back to school in 2006. He chose Dixie State in St. George, Utah, because it had a good reputation as a small school that got players into the NFL

Things might be different for history, government, or computer programming classes, but other things like physics really need a lab too.

Regarding the discussion I had with A-joe yesterday, here are some examples of wrestling having problems due to budget/Title IX issues.

This article is about how Portland State dropped their wrestling program last month–they now have club status.

  237. Garret April 20, 2009 9:44 pm

There is a worry that many other schools will follow Eastern Illinois’ example and drop wrestling…because APR rules are killing some wrestling programs.

As if the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) wasn’t under enough scrutiny by college coaches, Eastern Illinois University’s decision to drop its wrestling program on May 17 might set in motion a damning precedent to administrators around the country.

The problem athletes are the “0-for-2” students, as the NCAA calls them. Described on the NCAA web site, the “0-for-2” has become a “four-letter word.” Athletes who are on scholarship and are ineligible, lose a point towards the APR. Athletes who leave school while ineligible lose two points. Athletes on scholarship who transfer, but remain eligible, only lose one point. Athletes who transfer and are ineligible – 0-for-2.

A wrestler who might be collecting as little as five percent (scholarship) and went away from home, realizes he can’t break the lineup and transfers to a program more suitable, closer to home, and probably less expensive, will hurt his initial school’s APR by transferring.

  238. Garret April 20, 2009 9:47 pm

    Oregon dropped wrestling recently.

Kilkenny said that the contracts of head wrestling coach Chuck Kearney, who has completed nine seasons at the helm of the program, as well as assistant coaches Rick Stewart and Jason Powell, would be honored through June 30, 2008. In addition, the 17 wrestlers expected to be on scholarship for the coming year will be provided the following options: they will be allowed to compete at Oregon during the 2007-08 season under their current grant-in-aid status and then be allowed to transfer to another school, where they would be immediately eligible under NCAA guidelines; they will be given the opportunity to continue their education at Oregon after the 2007-08 season while retaining their current financial aid obligations through their remaining years of eligibility; or they would be given their release to transfer to another school immediately before the start of the 2007-08 season.

The Bears are looking for a CB in the draft and one of the players they have focused on is Mouton.

Who the Bears have been looking at

The Bears brought in West Virginia’s Ellis Lankster for a pre-draft visit after college scouting director Greg Gabriel attended the Mountaineers’ pro day. They also put Troy’s Sherrod Martin through a private workout. However, it’s believed they are looking at him as a free safety. Hoke went to Los Angeles to attend Hawaii’s pro day with a plan to look at Ryan Mouton.

  261. Garret April 21, 2009 6:04 am

Kenny Zuckerman sure does represent a lot of players with Hawaii ties.

Maiava’s agent, Kenny Zuckerman of Los Angeles-based Priority Sports, has told his client that he will get that much-anticipated call. Zuckerman also represents Dominic Raiola, Olin Kreutz, Kurt Warner, Shaun Cody and University of Hawaii hopefuls David Veikune and Ryan Mouton.

There are a lot of D-IA recruits on Maui, and UH having a practice/scrimmage there is a great way to help influence recruits and their family and friends to look even more favorably towards UH.

The NFL messed up their schedule in relation to the Fiesta Bowl. With the schedule already released, it will be interesting to see what the Cardinals and the NFL do to make it up to the Fiesta Bowl.

Before working out details on how to fix a scheduling conflict with the Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium, the organization has made an informal request.

It wants a letter from the Cardinals, stating that similar scheduling mistakes will not duplicate.

The conflict developed last week after the NFL released its 2009-10 season schedule. The league has the Cardinals playing their final home game Jan. 3 against the Green Bay Packers.

That’s a day before the Jan. 4 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl will be played in the same Glendale stadium. The bowl organization has a contract with the stadium operator that says the Cardinals can’t play a regular-season game within two days of the bowl. The Cardinals’ agreement with the stadium operator includes similar language.

The Cardinals have taken responsibility for the problem, admitting they failed to notify the NFL of the potential scheduling conflict.

  264. Garret April 21, 2009 6:11 am

Oregon State has been trying to figure out how to cut their Athletic Department’s expenses, with their financial situation sounding similar to UH’s one (though they don’t have a big HF deficit to deal with).

That doesn’t mean any sports are going to be cut, yet. That’s the last line of fiscal defense, said Todd Stansbury, executive senior associate director at OSU.

The Beavers live on the financial edge, which makes facing a poor economy troublesome.

They try to keep pace with the top end of the Pacific-10 Conference and make dents in the national landscape, but say they are under funded.

Stansbury wants coaches to rework schedules so there’s less amount of days on road trips. He wants an effort to schedule games in closer vicinity to play them in a shorter timeframe.

How many players and support personnel on the road are being looked at, seeing if that can be cut down to save on meals, plane tickets and hotel rooms.

Stansbury pointed out how the football team bused to Seattle instead of flying as a big way to cut costs.

“The size of plane football uses should be looked into,” Stansbury said. “Football charters, but maybe send a smaller party and send some people commercial.”

to the people in the know

what does it mean when you hear football coaches say, “we practice like an NFL team”?

reading the recent NY Times article and quotes from the Florida coach, Urban Meyer, he said,” the biggest difference in college football today is that a lot of college teams practice like an NFL team”. He goes on to say that this new concept was going on since the early ’90’s. And he even observes how high schools are beginning to practicing like how an NFL team conducts practices.

Remembering a Coach Jone’s quote from the radio. A caller had asked, “How come I don’t see your team running sprints at the end of practices”. And Coach Jones replied, even back then, “that we practice like an NFL team”.

So surmising on my part does the term “practicing like an NFL team” mean that the players on the football team are responsible for their own individual stretching, calisthenics and running outside of the practice and on their own time?

Watching last Saturday’s Warrior practice, for example, I observed how the players would do some perfunctory stretching and then boom right into their drills. This was taking place about 15-20 minutes before practice, and the players were with their respective groups. The OL, I was watching, were seated on the ground stretching their thigh muscles and then the next minute they were gathered working on technique drills, both passing and run blocking.

When the 300pm horn started commencing practice, I’m thinking, now, they’ll probably start their calisthenics and stretching. But no. They then went into 5 minute drill of 15 yard one quarter speed runs-forward, backward, sideways, high stepping etc.

Then the team gathered in the respective groups for agility drills. And 5 minutes later they’re practicing technique. About 15 minutes into the practice while the skill players are doing 7 on 7’s the DL and OL are scrimmaging with the emphasis on working on their assignments.

So about 25 minutes into the practice the 77 play scrimmage then begins.

And… huh, I’m really thinking…gees I hope the boys are stretched out and don’t injure themselves… Am I missing something here were my true thoughts. Do the boys, now a days, stretch and do their calisthenics in the locker room before heading onto the practice field? Maybe, IDK. Let’s pray they do.

…I mean in our day, some 30 years ago, before every practice, scrimmage and game we’d do real calisthenics–isometrics, ankle, wrists, shoulder and neck rolls And real agilities. Not perfunctory at all. For the coaches back then preached that being flexible, where the muscle groups are loose, deters injuries. This is easily understood.

And then I look at the Warriors and wonder. And I can see how lack of real calisthenics and stretching is conducive to injuries, and I’m hoping the players are doing it on their own time if that’s what they’re resigned to doing. To put mildly I was shocked at observing this last Saturday’s practice at how rigidly looking some of the linemen look.

What I’m guessing you’ll hear is that college football teams have time constraints and that they have to zip thru practices, like NFL teams do. What’s at the forefront of these practices is teaching assignments and instruction and the players are relegated to doing the axillary things on their own. And to the player’s benefit I hope they are.

  273. Jack Flash April 21, 2009 9:05 am

roysan16- i’ve heard that current research suggests large amounts of stretching prior to working out isn’t all that good for you. Coaches now say to just get “warmed up” with rotator circles and light exercising/jogging. The key is to thoroughly stretch after workouts.
    At least that’s what i’ve heard… Aloha!

  274. ombudsman April 21, 2009 9:05 am

    roysan16

I believe that you will win the bet. Why don’t we show up at the next gathering and I will pay you off?

I will bet that he can run a 4.7/40.

  275. madeinhawaii April 21, 2009 9:11 am

Maybe it just means that the NFL doesn’t pay for a player to get in shape and be ready. It pays for players that ARE ready at the start of their work day till the end. All that stretching, prepping and getting in shape are obligatory duties that each player needs to do on their own time. That would maximize the hands on time time that each player has to learn and practice their techniques and plays.

  276. roysan16 April 21, 2009 9:14 am

    al,

    al,
your funny. if from today on if I hear he runs a 4.7/40 I’ll pledge a $100. to the football team. that’s a promise.

psssst, it was ombudsman that made the bet. make sure you don’t get the two confused…..

  278. ombudsman April 21, 2009 9:30 am

    Eh, roysan16

I already have an identity crisis going on, why you calling me “al”?
I believe that I am at least twenty years younger than he is.
Oh boy, now I really going to get it.

  279. roysan16 April 21, 2009 9:40 am

    ombudsman,

    why?

    intuitive thinking

the real “al” acts the part-ombudsmen, which is good- an arbitrator type of person

not going to fool me–in a way you mimic “al”

the only thing missing is “nuff said”
