• Wilson Edwards, defensive lineman, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly.

• Joshua Quezad, running back, La Habra (Calif.) High.
• Roman Sapolu, center, Edison High (Huntington Beach, Calif.)
• John Timu, quarterback/safety, Long Beach (Calif.) Jordan.
• Soma Vainuku, linebacker, Eureka (Calif.) High.

Belated birthday wishes to Wafan and Caroline Kim.

    Dennis Halloran,

Roman’s commit to Oregon State has been reported in a number of places. However, Roman’s latest published statement was that he would be taking his recruiting visits, so even though he says he’s a strong commit it doesn’t seem like his mind is made up yet.

Whether or not UH pays for a recruiting visit for someone who says he is a strong commit to another school is something to worry about later. Things can change over the next 6 months or so and it is good that UH made the offer. This wasn’t a case of Pac-10 teams getting interested in a player after UH showed interest–Roman had offers from a number of other schools before Uh offered.

  16. madeinhawaii April 17, 2009 9:08 am

Let’s face it… If you’re not shooting at shutter speeds in excess of 1/500 of a second, Ryan Eastman is so fast, he’ll just be a blurrrrrr .

Nice to see the kind of highschool players that our new coaches are vying for. Just because we aren’t a BCS school doesn’t mean UH can’t have the same kind of attitude when it comes to recruiting and playing football.

Reality might give way to a little tweaking, but attitude and optimism? The sky should be the starting limit.

  17. madeinhawaii April 17, 2009 9:10 am

Charlie Wade would be a nice pick. Women’s volleyball dropped a level or two after he left and never really made it all the way back to where it was when he was around.

  18. Garret April 17, 2009 9:11 am

The center on RGM’s CFL team got a nice extension and RGM is one of the last starters left who hasn’t gotten a contract extension. I wonder if RGM is holding off on signing an extension because he’s going to try for the NFL–if he’s healthy he should have a shot at doing well in an NFL training camp.

The only 2 starters without an extension are RGM and Green, and the team specifically states that they will not give an extension to Green…and didn’t say the same thing about RGM.

The 32-year-old Richmond centre is bound to the Lions through the 2011 season at a reported average of $110,000 per season.

The deal means that, among starters last season heading into their option year, only rookie receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen and veteran running back Lyle Green have not had extensions.

Buono said the Lions have not had any talks with the 33-year-old Green, which could suggest the club will experiment with an increased role for second-year non-import Rolly Lumbala in training camp in June.

I posted yesterday about how one school raises extra money by auctioning the right to be an honorary coach during their spring game. If UH’s doesn’t want to have fans be considered coaches for the Warrior Bowl, they might do what Ohio State does and auction off a sideline spot during the Warrior Bowl.

Once again, the Ohio State Athletic Department is auctioning off what they’re calling the “ultimate spring football game experience“, which entails hanging out on the sideline of the Spring Game with a headset on and other perks.

John Timu has offers from UH, Oregon, and U-Dub.

Athlete prospect John Timu (6-1, 195, 4.5) from Long Beach (Calif.) Jordan has three offers on the table and plenty of other schools looking at him. Before the spring evaluation period is over there is a good chance that he will have a few more. He has the potential to play multiple positions on the next level.

  31. kaimiloa April 17, 2009 10:17 am

Quezada’s tape is great. He looks like a bruising back with some speed and balance.

  32. Garret April 17, 2009 10:18 am

Soma Vainuku also is highly regarded and has a number of offers. This article is almost a month old, so UH’s offer must have been fairly recent.

Vainuku is a bruising linebacker and fullback Junior out of Eureka High School in Eureka, CA. He recently competed in the Badger 7on7 Passing Tournament and walked away impressing onlookers with his size and talent.

“Right now I am 6′1 and I weight 256 pounds. I also run a 4.62 forty yard dash. So far I have been offered two scholarships, Oregon State and Washington, while I also am hearing from Oregon, USC, UCLA, Nebraska, Idaho, Arizona State, Duke, and Michigan,” says Vainuku.

Vainuku isn’t an unknown target for the Ducks as he made the trip up last October to catch the Oregon vs UCLA game in person.

“I went on an unofficial visit to Oregon to watch them play against UCLA. I was very impressed with what they had to offer regarding their facilities and the team,” says Vainuku.

Vainuku made mention it is important he plays close to home so his family can come and see him play and noted how Oregon isn’t very far away from Eureka and that his family could come and watch all his home games.

Another school that is close to home and one in which his family has traveled to on a regular basis already is USC as Vainuku’s cousin Ray Maualuga stared at SC for the past 4 years.

Having a family connection however hasn’t made SC a favorite amongst the other schools recruitin Vainuku, in fact he made it known he is totally open right now.

“I don’t have a favorite right now because I have been concentrating on my school [work] so much, but when the time comes I will pick a favorite. I currently have a 3.0 GPA and am working on keeping that,” Vainuku says

“I was thinking about taking a couple visits this spring, [but I’m]not sure when, but I will soon decide on what to do. I want to go up to both Oregon schools and down to UCLA and USC,” says Vainuku.

So what will be the deciding factor for this talented NorCal standout that is looking to play linebacker at the next level?

“When I think about schools I think about my education, location, and which school will benefit me the most in school and football,” says Vainuku.

  33. Garret April 17, 2009 10:19 am

For those who do not subscribe to the recruiting services, here are some highlights for Soma Vainuku.

Eureka (Calif.) linebacker/fullback Soma Vainuku is a prospect to watch in the 2010 class.Vainuku was one of the standouts of the Oakland UnderArmour/Scout.com Combine last month, working with both the running backs and linebackers.

  36. Garret April 17, 2009 10:23 am

I was in La Habra exactly a week ago and drove by Joshua Quezad’s high school then. He is an excellent prospect, but again the competition will be fierce. I like that the UH coaches aren’t afraid of recruiting competition, since if you don’t offer you never know if you had a chance.

With the organizational skills of Tony Tuioti, I figure that the UH coaches will know when to move on to other recruits if their top targets choose others.

  41. A-House April 17, 2009 10:33 am

Here’s is my totally unofficial take on the NFL draft:

    1) 49ers will draft Mark Sanchez with the #10 pick and immediately trade him to Washington for Colt Brennan and 2 high draft choices this year or next.

    2) included in this trade is Davone Bess going to Sf for 4th or 5th round selection for Maimi from SF.

    3) SF will offer Grice-Mullin a free agent contract with $100,000 guaranteed. Cost 49ers nothing because he is not with any NFL team.

    4) Consideration for free agent contracts to Rivers and CJ Hawthorne.

Let Davone and Grice-mullin challenge current receivers for starting spot or # 2 backup.

Us 49er fans keep dreaming, but what the hay, dreams can come true!!!!

  43. warriorfanny2 April 17, 2009 10:36 am

Home is where you hang your helmet:

Judging from ST’s coconut wireless report on warrior recruits on the continent– all is well with MAC & staff.
C’mon, it’s obvious the warriors have links to Long Beach Poly and a other HS venues known to propagate a few polynesian ballers.

I raise this cuz everytime a prime beef local-athlete commits to a mainland program it prompts great anxiety among our indigenous fans that spurns fear, rejection and frustration.
    Jibberwash!

The latest angst was sparked by a verbal commitment made by Wailua’s Graham Rowley to BYU.

Great news for the Rowley ohana!
His parents should be proud–and young Graham will find their footprints over beaten-paths that meander over the Provo campus.

Just as one or two sons of former rainbow great, Jesse Sapolu, may find their father’s cleats embeded on Cooke’s grassy field.

Look, home is where you hang your helmet, and no one knows this more than MAC n staff, especially the LEE brothers, whom are keenly aware of our local kids with sand in their shoes and a genuine quest for adventure.
eh, we are talking about teenagers arent we?

From waht I hear, after a brief intro to snow and mainland life–these kids are spending more time texting home than they spend talking to friends on their campus.
    But, dats annada storyline.

Moreover, unlike, previous UH coaches, who groused, stewed and pouted to the point of declarative frustration–MAC has turned this negative into a positive.

Coach MAC n Co. are creating a reverse migration for polynesian athletes that is salmon-like, and offering prospective contenental-recruits an opportunity to return to their roots and original spawning grounds.

As Jesse said, some things have changed in Manoa, but essentially, warriorland remains distinctively, the same.
And he says this with an unabashed feeling of pride.
    Hello!
This is not a naive Kalihi-kid talking, but an NFL veteran that played in more Super Bowls than Wayne-Wayne has attended. Well, maybe not.
    But, you get my drift.

Rowley, best wishes dude, but who cares?

Hawaii has a wealth of talented homies on the continent and for them too, home is where they hang their helmet.

Any reason why you chose not to post the name of “local” recruits who were offered UH scholarships?

By my count, 9 local HS players have also received solid offers. Will Jesse Williams count for 2010? Kahai LaCount? or, are they included in the 9?

  48. Stephen Tsai April 17, 2009 10:49 am

The one thing players (and their families) miss is the coverage when they go away. In Hawai‘i, there are two major daily newspapers that write football stories year round. There are TV stations. Talk shows. Every game is available on statewide TV. There are blogs, and fan Web sites, and videos, etc. And practices are open to fans, friends and family.
I’m always getting messages from parents wanting to know why I don’t write about their kids on the Mainland. I tell them I cover UH. Hey, I didn’t even write about my daughter’s athletic career.

    Good morning Tsaikos…

Great to see the above list contains all HS players. Nothing against JC transfers, especially when there are areas where you need someone to make an immediate impact, but HS players allow for long term needs….and therefore continuity in a program that allows it to be a perrenial power….

  53. richloo April 17, 2009 11:06 am

is b stutz hurt. i caught the tail end of an interview on 1420

  54. Garret April 17, 2009 11:12 am

The list is going to consist solely of high school players because those are the players that are recruited at this time of year. High school players go to camps, take unofficial visits to colleges, go to Junior Days, get offers, and many commit early. If you look at other football programs, they are all offering high school players also.

It is too early to recruit JC players for a variety of reasons. In the Fall teams may find that some players aren’t developing as expected or players can get hurt and a team might decide it needs immediate help in a certain area and they will recruit JC players to fill that need. Plus, schools want to recruit JC players that can enroll in January and that status won’t be known until the Fall.

So, giving offers now to high school recruits is not early…in most of the cases for the players above some Pac-10 schools offered the recruits before UH. Giving offers to JC players now would be extremely early except in rare cases.

  55. madeinhawaii April 17, 2009 11:14 am

I like that this blog is specific to UH sports with some of the prep and elementary achievements. Intra-State sports. There would be too little focus, otherwise, and blogging would go off in more tangents than it already does.

And talking about tangents… when did those slimmer, red-whisker Bulbuls start eating noni fruit?

    Ah.. but I, too, digress.

  56. warriorfanny2 April 17, 2009 11:19 am

Hawaii will continue to recruit JUCOs until we can stock our cupboards with quality high school players in every unit.

JUCO recruitin isnt by whim, it is done through careful, calculated evaluation of returning player personnel, esp in the skill positions. Such as CBs, safeties or RBs.
It is also contemplated to fill gaps made through graduation or academic attrition and the like.

eh, JUCO players are the sensible solution to fill units decimated by attrition and because of their maturity and post hs experience, they reasonably offer a higher probability of payoff in a shorter period of time.

Mac has publically made his recruiting philosophy known,
“While he is building for tomorrow, the future is NOW!”
    JUCO recruiting makes this possible.
    I agree.

It will take the entire term of MAC’s 5-year contract to build a strong base of high school recruits….be patient.

  57. Garret April 17, 2009 11:20 am

Article about a UH baseball commit.

For senior baseball captain Austin Lastimado, baseball is more than just a hobby. He’s played the sport since he was 4, when his father introduced it to him.

As the school team’s second basemen, he plays as No. 23. Lastimado reveals that he used to play football as a freshman, but decided to focus on baseball full-time.

“Baseball is my life,” said Lastimado.

He plans to further his baseball career at his choice school, the University of Hawaii. Lastimado would also like to make it to pros.

Lastimado has been on the boys’ baseball team since his freshman year, and led the team in hits and home runs during the 2007-2008 season. He also retained last year’s top batting average out of all the returning Varsity players. Furthermore, Lastimado has done some pitching for the team this year, but his main position is second baseman.

Interesting to see the wide range of opinions from scouts on Mouton. All it takes is for one team to want to draft him high…I hadn’t heard a 2nd-round evaluation before for Mouton, and 4th round would be much higher than he was rated before UH’s Pro Day.

Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke went to Los Angeles for the Hawaii pro day on April 2 to work out cornerback Ryan Mouton (more on him later) but Mouton pulled a hamstring.

Mouton is very athletic at 5-9, 187. He has long arms and had a 39 1/2-inch vertical jump to go with a broad jump of 11 feet. He’s an interesting guy because people have his draft value all over the board from the second to the seventh round. The safest bet is he is probably a fourth-round choice. Multiple teams are headed to Houston to put Mouton through positional drills next week but the Bears are not one of them. They are in the middle of organizational meetings with all of the scouts and coaches that began Wednesday.

Want to hear a song recorded by Susan Boyle 10 years ago? Click on my name for the link to the video.

It emerged last night that Susan, whose Britain’s Got Talent triumph has made her an instant superstar, is being lined up for an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show which would give her the chance of a number one album in the US.

But the Record can reveal she made her first recording back in 1999, when she sang blues ballad Cry Me A River for a charity CD.

Only 1000 copies of the disc were ever produced, but we’ve got hold of the long-forgotten recording and it’s now on our site. A showbiz insider said: “This is a real coup for the Record. The whole world would have wanted to find this.

And BGT supremo Simon Cowell reckons that if the appearance goes ahead, it will guarantee that her debut album will top the charts in the States.

It’s all a far cry from 1999, when Susan recorded her track for the charity compilation CD at Whitburn Academy, where X Factor winner Leon Jackson went to school.

Susan suffered a mild form of brain damage at birth and she admitted to Sawyer that she was bullied when she was younger. “They did a bit,” she said, “but they always do that with someone who is quiet and I tended to be quiet at school.

“Well, they have turned around. They are nice to me now, so we will move on from there.”

And when Sawyer asked what she would say to her late parents if she could, she replied: “I would like to say thank you for supporting me over the years, thank you for looking after me and I hope I can make you proud.”

Piers Morgan talked about the day she showed up for her audition.

Can you walk me through that day Susan Boyle performed?

It was one of the most unexpected things I’ve ever seen in my life. Before she came on, we had a whole day of very bad auditions — eight hours of pretty grim acts doing pretty talentless things — and we’d all had just about enough. Then on comes this woman and she’s going to sing like Elaine Page, and we’re all like, “Oh no, you’re not.”

So you thought she was just going to be another mediocre performer?

Yeah, we thought she was just going to be a bit of a joke and we’d all have a good laugh and we’d all go back to bed and think, “What a terrible day that was!” When she began to interact with us, she was making silly jokes and pulling funny faces and we’re like, “Oh dear, this is really going to be the end.”

Garret: I have Mouton in the 4th-5th range, weighted toward the 4th. If not for the hamstring, I’d have him solidly in the 3rd-4th range, with a chance at 2nd. A team could still reach for him, and I wouldn’t have too much of an issue with it. We all know that he’s a guy with tremendous upside. Glad to see he’s rising on so many boards. It’s just like I said before, scouts needed to see his measurables because he’s lacking in film. If he did good, I thought he could get drafted in the 6th or 7th. He did great, which propels him into early day 2. Just the injury knocks him back a little bit in my grade, although he hasn’t really had a chance to rest, so it’s not his fault.

    To all the Tsaikos,

Mahalo for the aloha for The Beast;he misses home, and he always asks how everyone is doing.

Mahalo ST for the gracious post, not everyone can play for UH, but as long as they represent Hawaii in a spirit of excellence, well, i think we can all appreciate that. The 2009 highlight film had some classic hits, and ended with a solo sack by the beast against Glanville’s PSU team, putting an exclamation point on a memorable, history making season for WSU.

The real joy is when you walk into an athletic department and you see every computer terminal being used by a student athlete, or when you see the team attending study hall together, or when you see coaches and families sitting together sharing a quiet laugh and making memories.

Ryan always asks ‘hey dad, do they know how I’m doing back home, do they know how much i miss home?’ I tell him don’t worry, make his mark and live his dream.

We brought fresh poke 10 lbs of it,and about 25 leis for everyone and wore a VERY BRIGHT Manuheali’i matching outfits…just bringing some Aloha to chilly Ogden.

Mahalo again, I will always be a Warrior fan, a True Tsaiko, but I will bleed purple for Weber Wildcats. Now let’s watch our Warriors get at least 8 wins this season.

    GO WILDCATS
    GO WARRIORS

    Jason,

I agree that Mouton’s draft stock went significantly up because of his performances at the Combine and Pro Day. If he hadn’t gotten hurt and could have gone all-out during his 40, he could have gotten that 2nd-round spot that he deserves. As it stands, 4th round would be good and anything higher would be great.

  131. Garret April 17, 2009 3:55 pm

    Jason,

You might not believe this, but Faith’s school district has Math League starting with second graders! The math teacher asked Faith today to join the team once she is old enough.

  132. Garret April 17, 2009 3:58 pm

Here is one of the problems Faith’s math teacher gave to her (she solved the problem quickly right in front of the teacher)…I used to love these problems but I know I didn’t do them in Kindergarten.

Al, Jeff, and Linda are walking their pets in the park. The pets are
a dog, a cat, and a rabbit. The names of the pets are Rocky, Fluffy,
and Chunk. Read the following clues to determine the name and kind of
    pet each owner has.

    1. Al does not own the rabbit.

    2. Linda owns either Fluffy or Chunk.

    3. Jeff owns the cat.

    4. The cat’s name is Chunk.

San Jose State Holds Off Hawai’i Softball, 5-4

    from hawaiiathletics.com:

    4/17/2009 3:13:21 PM

SAN JOSE, Calif.—The University of Hawai‘i softball team battled hard, scoring two runs in the seventh, but eventually fell just short to San Jose State, 5-4. The Spartans scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and then held on for the win at SJSU Field this afternoon. Dara Pagaduan led Hawai‘i on offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, a triple, and a run scored.

The loss snapped UH’s five game win streak. The ‘Bows fell to 20-21 on the season and 8-5 in conference action, while the Spartans raised their record to 18-27 and 5-8 in the WAC.

Hawai‘i’s Stephanie Ricketts (15-8, 8-3 WAC) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on 10 hits with two strike outs and no walks. It was her 19th complete game of the season.

The Spartans’ starter, Deanna Mauer (6-6), evened her overall record, throwing six-plus innings to earn the win. She gave up four runs on seven hits with three walks and three strike outs. Amanda Pridmore picked up her third save of the season with an inning of work. She gave up two hits and struck out one.

In the second inning, UH jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Traci Yoshikawa led the inning off with a walk and Audrey Andrade followed with a single to centerfield. Kanani Pu’u-Warren then drew another walk to load the bases. Stacey Yamada then hit a grounder to short and SJSU’s shortstop fired home to force out lead runner, Yoshikawa. Pagaduan then hit a single to left that scored both pinch-runner Alex Aguirre and Pu‘u-Warren. The next batter, Tanisha Milca hit a fly ball to right. The rightfielder made the catch and threw to the cut-off, the shortstop, who threw to first to double off Pagaduan to end the inning.

San Jose State tried to respond in the bottom of the second. Wells started with an infield single and then hustled to third on a single to right by Lopez. Ricketts then got the next batter to pop-up to short and then Otto flied out to left for the second out. But on the play, Wells tagged and ran home, but on the appeal was called out for leaving the bag early.

The Spartans posted a run in the fourth to cut UH’s lead to 2-1. Mauer singled to right with one out. Wells then hit a grounder to the shortstop who flipped to second to get the force out at two. Lopez then drilled a double to the right-centerfield gap to score Wells all the way from first.

In the next half-inning, UH had possible opportunity to pad its lead, but SJSU held the ‘Bows off. Pagaduan led off with a single to center and Milca followed with a double to center, putting both runners into scoring position. But Mauer then got a pop-up to short for the first out and then Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu hit a fly to right and Milca was doubled off at second for the third out of the inning.

Hawai‘i continued to lead the game, 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when San Jose State erupted for four runs. With one out, Mauer started things off with a single to centerfield. Next, Wells laced a double down the leftfield line to put runners at second and third. The Spartans then loaded the bases when Lopez was hit by a pitch. Aiello then hit a grounder to short. On the play shortstop, Yoshikawa, fired home to get the lead runner out at the plate. With two outs, pinch-hitter Hawkins drilled a triple to centerfield, driving in Aiello, Lopez, and Wells. Otto, who re-entered the game for Hawkins as the base runner on third, then scored on a wild pitch to extend the Spartans’ lead to 5-2.

The Rainbow Wahine fought until the end in the seventh. Yamada reached first safely on a fielding error by the Spartans’ second baseman. Pagaduan then hit an opposite-field triple to right, scoring pinch-runner Mikalemi Tagab-Cruz from first. Pridmore then entered the game in relief of Mauer for SJSU. She struck out Milca for the inning’s first out, but then gave up an RBI single down the leftfield line by Clare Warwick that scored Pagaduan. Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu followed with another single to short. The ‘Bows had the tying and potential winning run on base, but San Jose State then got Amanda Tauali‘i to fly out to right and ended the game on a pop-up to short.

The two teams square off tomorrow for a doubleheader to end the series. The first game starts at 12:00 pm.

They all gathered at the huge main dining table and proceeded to eat every course that the full kitchen staff could whip up. By the end of the evening, which Tsaiko “won”?

well, methinks that nash is awaiting a decision by one big and that will determine how and where the second scholie rolls out. we are in dire need of a big and another swingman who can shoot to compliment flemings (i don’t think he goes pro). flemings achilles heel is a lack of an outside shot and average ball handling.

Wha ? No bulbul in Kauai? Unimaginable.

Back in 1986 there were none that I can remember. That was the year I left for Japan. In 1994, when I came back, they were all over the place. Both common BulBuls and Red-Whiskered ones. Today, I think there are more common bulbuls here than there are mynahs. Most animals propagate gradually, mice and rabbits multiply… bulbuls use quadratics.

At least now now I know what I need to pack the next time we go island hopping to Kauai. We Oahuans love to share.

I bet that Warrior fans would love it if UH had a garage sale before the Warrior Bowl…this is a great fundraiser for Texas Tech, UNLV, and others and a great thing for the fans.

In another novel way of raising funds, some schools are holding “garage sales” in conjunction with spring games, selling apparel and equipment that is no longer being used. Among the schools are Texas Tech, UNLV and Illinois State. Cornell had one last month, and Baylor held a baseball garage sale in the fall.

This is the third such event at Texas Tech, but the first that has been positioned in the middle of the spring game weekend. Red Raiders used equipment and apparel will be on sale along with overstock and sale items from the school store, says Alan Berger of the Double T Zone, which holds the Texas Tech merchandising contract.

Tech will set up about a 3,000-square-foot lobby in the football stadium near private suites and club seats today through Sunday. This year’s sale will be richly stocked because the school recently signed an exclusive contract with Under Armour, so old gear will be on the market.

Warm-up apparel, hats, shorts and T-shirts will be among available items.

“It’s a great way to combine a clearance sale and to recycle athletic department gear that otherwise would be going in the trash or winding up in a storage unit someplace,” says Berger. “We hope to go over $100,000 in sales.

“Football helmets have been the most popular item in the past and we will have 17 football helmets, which sell for $175, and 500 or so football jerseys from the late 1980s until 2000. Those range from $50 to $200-$300, depending on whose jersey it was.”

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has a nice series of stories from inside the drafts from the past. Here is a nice story about the 49ers taking Joe Montana.

“We thought that Joe Montana and Jerry Rice were worth trading up for, but year after year Walsh traded down because he calculated he would get more value and more picks and it turned out he was right more often than wrong,” Dahlen said.

Walsh felt that Montana would last until their last pick of the third round in 1979, but chief scout Tony Razzano had him rated higher than anyone else on the staff. Three quarterbacks were taken before Montana that year, all in the first round, including Jack Thompson (3) by Cincinnati, Giants quarterback Phil Simms (7) and Steve Fuller (23) by Kansas City. Only Simms was worthy.

The 49ers traded their first pick, took UCLA running back James Owens in the second round and acquired a third-round pick (No. 82) from Dallas to select Montana.

  184. Garret April 17, 2009 7:49 pm

Story from the Jets (ST’s favorite team) draft room:

The Jets wanted Marvin Jones, the FSU linebacker.

“We loved Marvin,” said Pat Kirwan, then a front-office executive.

And they knew they could get him. The Jets picked third in 1993. The two top picks, held by New England and Seattle, would almost certainly be quarterbacks Drew Bledsoe and Rick Mirer. So the Jets could have just sat there and taken their guy. But that’s never enough.

“The month leading up to the draft, we started to try to make it clear that we liked other players,” Kirwan said. “We got the message out that we were strongly considering Garrison Hearst. Arizona, which picked fourth, really wanted Hearst.”

The night before the draft, the Cardinals called to see if they could switch spots. They were concerned that the Jets could take Hearst or trade their pick to a team that would.

On draft day, Arizona blinked. To move up just one spot, the Cardinals sent over its own starting running back, Johnny Johnson.

“We ended up with the guy we wanted and a guy who played pretty well for us for a couple of years,” Kirwan said. Johnson rushed for 1,752 yards the next two seasons. Hearst rushed for 433.

    Piper’s son,

I read a lot of boring papers and summarize them for work–often going through 10 of them (each 10-15 pages long) to get a half-page of useful information when they are summarized together. So, when I have time I can look at what you are curious about…but I’m guessing it will be out of my wireless communications specialty area.

My job today was to pore through boring technical specifications (and some marketing fluff where you have to figure out what is real and what is fluff) of products from 5 companies. I basically turned several hundred pages of stuff into a 1-paragraph summary today. Then, next week I have to decide what parts to buy from which company that will fit what my customer wants. Then I try to put everything together and show working hardware in May.

Pretty cool to read about Martin’s work! At least people can understand and appreciate his work! My stuff is either too technical, too boring, or too sensitive/classified to talk about…I can’t even tell my wife.

This Niners Nation article suggests trading Alex Smith for Colt. I doubt this would ever happen, but I’m sure it would make A-House and other 49ers fans very happy.

If the Redskins are contemplating a new QB

Why not trade alex smith and recieve colt brennan and a third or fourth round pick

colt brennan showed alot of promise last year and i really like him alot. last preseason, his first, Brennan completed 36-of-53 passes for 411 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. His QB rating of 109.9 led the offense.

In his first professional outing, the Hall of Fame Game against Indianapolis on Aug. 3, Brennan completed 9-of-10 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

His best performance may have been on Aug. 16 against the New York Jets. He completed 4-of-5 passes for 79 yards, including a 33-yard game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Jason Goode.

  230. Garret April 18, 2009 5:41 am

Central Arkansas will open UH’s season with a new QB…but they aren’t sure which of their 3 QBs will be the starter.

Fresh off a 10-2 season in which UCA posted a Southland-best 6-1 record, the Bears have begun life without Nathan Brown. But who will take Brown’s place as the starting quarterback remains to be seen.

Currently, senior Robbie Park (6-foot-4, 208) and sophomore Nathan Dick (6-4, 217), a transfer from the University of Arkansas, appear to be the frontrunners. But it’s Park, who backed up Brown the past few years, who seems to be the closest being under center come fall.

    That, though, isn’t certain.

Redshirt freshman Trae Cook (6-2, 178) adds a different dimension to the quarterback position. He’s the most mobile of the three but not as solid a passer.

“Trae is probably the hybrid type,” Faulkner said. “He can do a lot of different things. We’ve got to get him on the football field somehow whether its at quarterback, receiver or running back.”

Brown, who finished his UCA career with more than 10,000 passing yards and 100 touchdowns and is likely to be selected in next weekend’s NFL Draft, set plenty of impressive passing marks during his time with the Bears.

    That was the past, though.

“You don’t fill Nathan’s shoes. You just move on,” UCA coach Clint Conque said. “Players come and go. You’ve just got to find what these quarterbacks can do.”

A discussion on ESPN about rumors of Washington Redskins desire to draft a rookie qb to replace their current qb and thereby leapfroging even Colt Brennan is upsetting.
To suggest that this rookie at this point in time is better than a starting veteran qb and his backups, is unbelievable!!?? It’s a slap in the face.
I guess it is what it is….all these qb’s including CB, weren’t as good as I/we thought.

  236. Kekoa April 18, 2009 6:39 am

mctruck ~ Time for the “Play me or Trade Me” speech. We who believe in CB, know his potential when given the football. Those, whom I shall call the ‘unwashed’ – will never know until he becomes their *rival* QB and burns them for TD’s!

  237. wena April 18, 2009 6:56 am

    Happy birthday to Wafan.

Happy birthday to Caroline Kim….sweet 16??????

mctruck. Grr. I share your sentiments about the Skins. But I feel in my heart that something good for Colt will come out in the end.

  243. d1島 April 18, 2009 7:33 am

eh, how come I never got the phone call that the Miller Girls are there??!!??

Figured you need to be “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this morning…plus, they weren’t handing ’em out fo’ free like the Heineken girls 🙁

  245. d1島 April 18, 2009 7:38 am

    al,

  247. chawan_cut April 18, 2009 8:04 am

    There’s the fast lane.
    There’s the passing lane.
    And I suppose, there’s the lame lane….
    😯 😆 🙄

  250. 99club April 18, 2009 8:11 am

    mctruck/Liz,

RE: Redskins looking for a QB
To quote Michael Wilbon on PTI: “Dan Snyder is never happy with anyone who’s on his team.” As a Redskin fan, I have to say they’ll never win a Super Bowl as long as Snyder owns the team.

  251. d1島 April 18, 2009 8:20 am

Kekoa- We need to find a way to cross our paths.

    and dot our aisles?

    heheheh

Howzit d1島! What’s on your calendar for today? 8)

  257. Kekoa April 18, 2009 8:37 am

    A-Joe ~ Two things dis morning…

    1. I know you have the ‘package.’

    2. I’ll be at the scrimmage at around 3ish.

We can exchange info about the passing of the ‘package’ at the field. Come alone, no HPD or SWAT teams. I’ll be watching from da tower. Anything out of order and you will never be able to play the Bass guitar again!

Nah, Nah, Nah…j/k! Call me with your plans, I have an idea for tonite.

  258. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:39 am

    What’s the secret password? 8)

  259. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:40 am

I’m most curious to see if the jm2009 one really attends the KK with Liz_K this pm…. 😯 😆 🙄

  260. d1島 April 18, 2009 8:41 am

  261. d1島 April 18, 2009 8:43 am

    Hmmm….
    speaking of “party”…
I hope the blog host was able to wake up in time for the Coaches’ Clinic 🙄

  262. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:43 am

    Isn’t it more likely:

    eat,
    practice,
    eat,
    party,
    eat,
    eat,
    game,
    eat,
    karaoke,
    eat,
    night cap and snack…..
    😆

  263. WarriorMojo April 18, 2009 8:44 am

And just like that my calendar opens up a bit. Let’s see, the scrimmage today is at 3:00? I’ll be there. Where do you guys sit at baseball? Maybe I’ll take in a game there too. No Vball, though.

  264. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:45 am

    Wasn’t it a class reunion…. for old classmates? 🙄 😆

  265. d1島 April 18, 2009 8:46 am

…can’t miss those Nuggets o’ Nowledge from the “O College” Coach about how to have the #1 HS recruit in the country on your team for 3 years and manage to win 1 championship….

    …but I digress.

  266. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:47 am

W-Mojo – Do you have tix for the Wazzu game? I think my bros may join me and attend…. including the Consumer Rights Advocate one that you know…. 😀

  267. Kekoa April 18, 2009 8:48 am

C_C ~ I bear witness to the fact that D-1 did in fact place that call on the night of April 17th, at exactly 10:19 PM (22:19 hrs). Many are called, few are chosen!

These were not like the women I had to protect you from on Maui. These were the real deal! The REAL Miller girls!

As a matter of fact, we had 4 young Rainbow dancers seated 3 rows below us at the Les. You could have very easily met at least one and married her by the 8th inning!

  268. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:49 am

#265 – Hmmmmm…. is that the FHS or the SLHS in you that’s saying that….?

  271. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:53 am

    #267 –

    Would have to be a “shot-gun” wedding…. about 20 “shots” each…. 😆

  272. d1島 April 18, 2009 8:53 am

So does anyone know if the practice/scrimmage today will be on the Field Turf?

  273. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:54 am

    That’s why it’s called a TEAM sport….. 😆

  274. Kekoa April 18, 2009 8:55 am

Brew ~ I’m betting that jm2375 will wimp out on the KK tonite. She’ll attend the VB match with Ms Lizzie, but will either drop Liz off at the club, or ask her to bum a ride with myki and sj after the game.

  275. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:56 am

    Yeah…. that’s what I’m guessing too…. 🙄

  276. d1島 April 18, 2009 8:56 am

The Dog Wash is now open! (as I have been “informed” by Mrs. d1島)

…see you at the practice field!

  277. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:57 am

Unless….Uncle SteveM can convince her to get all the 411 about cruising at Club Genji…. 😯

  278. brew808 April 18, 2009 8:59 am

It must be Saturday if d1島 and Bones get bathes…. 😆
