UCSB tops Hawaii in 5 on Night 2
Junior opposite Brook Sedore put down a team-high 15 kills and junior middle Taylor Averill added 14 but it was not enough as No. 11 Hawaii fell to No. UC Santa Barbara for a seventh straight time tonight in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Gauchos (5-2, 4-1) were led by Evan Licht’s 22 kills in winning the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match 20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 21-25, 15-13 at Rob Gym.
Sophomore hitter Siki Zarkovic added 10 kills for the Rainbow Warriors (5-4, 3-3). Junior middle Davis Holt had nine kills with just one error, had two of Hawaii’s five aces and was in on eight of the team’s 15 blocks.
Hawaii returns from its first road trip of the season Saturday. The Rainbow Warriors head back out on the road later next week for two matches at Cal State Northridge Friday and Saturday.

I can’t believe Olsen played all 5 sets hitting well below negative, not sure what the coaches are thinking but Fey could certainly could not do any worse.
Olsen 4 kills and 8 errrors in 5 sets, pathetic.
Siki is not playing well either, Brook and Taylor can’t do it alone.
The only reason UH had a winning record now is because they played San Diego at the beginning as opposed to the end last year. Wade needs to go. He doesn’t know how to use his players. If Wade is the coach next year, I wouldn’t be surprise if Fey transfers out. He may want to play for UH but the operative word is play and play he isn’t. Baffled as for Wade’s reason for not playing Fey. It doesn’t have to be Fey but he could play anyone else other than Olsen. All the talk about experience and playing as a team is kind of a joke and it is just words because they are not panning out to be a good team. See very little difference between last year and this year, Again Wade needs to go.
Seriously? We’re early into the season and you’re already saying they aren’t a good team and beating up on players having off nights? I’m not a fan of Wade either, but this was their first road trip. UCSB beat Stanford and took Irvine to 5. Stating the obvious, the MPSF is tough…and when this team beats Irvine, UCLA and BYU (yes, I believe in them) you’ll all be talking about how great the Warriors are.
I just think it is frustrating knowing we have all this talent on the bench that is not being used when players are having off nights. Mol had 1 attack attempt, Fey didn’t even play and did I miss something on McKellar? Have not seen him at all lately and isn’t he a lefty? Lefty’s can always throw a kink in the offense and he looked promising the last time he was on the court. Just not sure why others are not being given a chance. oh well….
5. agree it it frustrating. And agree you have to look at it as their first road trip.
McKellar is a lefty and does add a wrinkle but it’s not all about the offense. You have to consider defense.
The men’s game is much different than the women’s. They have six substations and you can only re-enter once. Mol is a trained opposite so your choice is to sub him for Sedore.
You can also look at the improvement from night to night. They played much better, more aces, fewer service errors and more blocks.
4. The MPSF is tough. UCSB is 4-1 in league for a reason. Rob Gym a very tough place to play. Students can be brutal and they were warned, apparently, at least once for inappropriate cheers.
How come the team has to fly back for only two days of school? Isn’t it more expensive (than 3 extra nights in a hotel) and exhausting for the guys to fly back and forth twice? They already miss classes on road trips anyway.
I’m not sure why they are doing it that way. Was told that they were by the SID so didn’t get a reason.
Women’s basketball team is staying on the mainland but wahine play Saturday and Thursday. They’d be flying back Sunday and back out Tuesday so no sense to do that.
the men fly back today, then back out Wednesday (maybe overnight, don’t have their itinerary.)
it would be more like 5 extra nights plus food, assuming they fly overnight Wed.
I guess it would be more exhausting. but not as bad as 95 when UH went to UCLA for the MPSF final, flew back to Hawaii then flew back to springfield for NCAA tourney. Wilton later said he wished the had changed it and stayed on the mainland. Team was exhausted when they got to MA. I was too but I had stayed in California.
I am just tired of them losing to UCSB, they aren’t that much better talent wise (if at all)
I think UH has the potential to make the final six this year but a team that makes final six should manage to win at least one against a middle of the pack team like UCSB. It’s time to bench Olsen and get West back in the lineup, hopefully he’s healthy now.

I’m sure West will be back in the mix when he is cleared to play.
Agree that they have the potential to make the top six.

Siki is struggling offensively as well but he’s a better passer than Olsen. I don’t think it would hurt to shake things up at this point.
Snce they dropped both at UCSB they absolutely must win both at Northridge.
I do believe UCSB will finish middle of the pack anywhere from 6- 9, losing both matches and now 7 matches in a row to them is bad.
Warriofan, I don’t know why you always beat up on individual players. They ALL work hard and do their best, and your armchair quarterbacking doesn’t do a thing except create doubt in the minds of players unfortunate enough to read this blog. Are you at every practice, observing? Gotta say, I am no fan of Wade but good, bad or indifferent, he’s the guy in the hot seat, but you seem to want to make it about individual players.
A loss on their first road trip, to a fairly evenly-matched team, isn’t the end of the world. The Warriors play the current leaders in the conference at home this year, which will serve them well. I’ll be awaiting your ‘I was wrong’ at the end of the regular season when the Warriors are killing it.
Beat up?? get over, just because I say someone should get benched that’s not beating up on them. He’s not producing offensively so why continue to start him and not give Fey a chance.
How would I be wrong?? I am not saying they are horrible, just upset they had a bad week and didn’t win one of the matches this week.
WF, as I’ve said before. it’s not all about offense. have to look at the passing and blocking schemes. That they have Mol in the serving rotation allows them to see what he does in the back row (briefly) before the libero returns. I like McKellar as well. Being left handed is hard for the opponents to block.
