Departures
Training camp opens in two weeks, but the following are no longer with the Warriors:
> Bubba Poueu-Luna, wideout/kickoff returner — After earning three letters in his first four years, he opted to retire from football and focus on academics. He did not participate in the recent spring training.
> David Griffin, offensive tackle — After transferring from Mesa College in January 2013, Griffin played in five games, making two starts, at right tackle last season. He underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason. Griffin is expected to transfer to a lower-division school in Texas … to play basketball.
> Hunter Hughes, quarterback — He gave it the old college try. At the walk-on tryouts, he qualified for a berth as a scout quarterback this past spring. Unfortunately for Hughes, he did not earn an invitation to training camp.
> Max Broman, running back — Similar to offensive lineman Brendan Urban, Broman learned the steep price of paradise for a non-scholarship, non-resident student.
> Cesar Fermin, cornerback — He did not meet the requirements to transfer to UH this past January or this summer. He still is working to complete his associate degree.
> Dustin Elisara, fullback — He was granted a medical retirement, and remains on scholarship, although his playing career appears to be over.
> Michael Lafaele, announcer — He joined Iolani School as an assistant coach, preventing him from working as a pre-game analyst for OC Sports’ telecasts of UH games.

Mayo is in summer school now. He might be a few days late for training camp.
Fermin would have been more valuable if he had qualified at mid-year. But when he didn’t do that, UH began looking for replacements.
So far, Jalen Rogers has played well in unsupervised drills. The test comes in two weeks.

My mom and I enter St. Rita’s church in Nanakuli last night for a “town hall” type meeting. Start greeting folks as usual, and then this guy comes up and says… “Tsaikos shirt… are you Wes’side Warrior?” Hahaha! He put one and one together because I’d commented that my car is once again giving us problems… this time by overheating. Well, what do you know… Kapahulu and I go to the same church, but usually different mass! Another connection made, all thanks to a Tsaikos shirt!

RE: Hungry before a fasting blood sugar test
ST — Years ago, I didn’t eat much at dinner the night before a blood test. In fact, I even ate early. Absolutely no dessert, ice cream, or sweet things or munchies. I didn’t want to get scolded by my doc when he saw the results. I used to get real hungry around 10:00 pm.
My solution: drink water. Force yourself to drink water to fill the tummy.
For me only, a second solution — eat normally. Why should I try, for 1 day, to fool my doc who is looking after my health? Besides, the A1C result for the period nabs me. 🙄

Why doesn’t someone on the athletics staff work on “financial aid” for those non-scholarship players especially if they are from the mainland? We can always use linemen, so I’m surprised we’re not making an extra effort to keep them.
Too bad about Elisara…I was expecting BIG THINGS from him and he was highly rated out of high school. I guess it was the damaged knees…He would have made an excellent fullback.
Having diabetes for nearly a decade now, I say, keep away from dat nasty sugar in all forms. That’s one of the keys to better health. Take care Mr. Tsai.

With the probability of the Big 5 getting their way the question remains “What about the Mid Majors? Josh Pacheco mentioned today that JJ said that the “Have-Nots” should all play in the Spring instead. Out of the box thinking to be sure. Sounds good to me. If you can’t join em, Beat em! Without the need to compete for tv time with the big boys, the mid-dies can try to negotiate new tv contracts. The are many out there that watch baseball and basketball mainly because there is no football.
An alternative plan (Plan B) would be for the have nots to file a class action anti trust suit. (feel free to chime in all you attorneys out there).
Plan C is to do nothing and kiss D1 football goodbye.

I think that moving football for the “have-nots’ to Spring would create a bunch of complications for the athletic landscapes of the schools. Does this also mean that they would now have their own “Final Four” basketball tournament? I can see it being a difficult situation for fans if they simply kept the other sporting events as scheduled and just moved football to spring.
That one needs more thought.
oddly, my doc does the A1C sans fasting.
bowar…pretty sure that all athletes not on a full ride are given the opportunity to apply for all financial aid that are available to them and that which they may qualify for. all the student/athlete needs to do is file the forms in a timely manner as well as having their parents sign off on them.
Spring idea the best I have heard so far.
For sure, moving football to the spring will cause a domino-effect in maintaining some sense of balance with baseball which is played in the spring. If the other mid-major conferences agree with the change, then the NCAA college world series would disappear. It all sounds interesting.
We need to remember that if We stick with the status quo, and the Big 5 takes all the money, the driver that football is now will eventually cease to exist along with the other sports in a dominoe effect.

#46- no problem. The A1C results cover an extended time period (@60-90 days), so a meal on the morning of the test will not alter the results. Fasting glucose numbers reflect a specific point in time, and will be affected by a meal immediately before the blood draw.

On the have nots playing in spring, it will be the end to UH football and the rest of the have nots. It’s funny that JJ thought about it when he knows the same USFL playing in the spring time lasts only three years and the NFL prevailed. Plus the good recruits will not go to a have not school if it means playing when the NFL will have their combines and draft. The good ones from the have not schools will have to wait till next spring to enter the draft.
I mean it’s good chatter and at least someone is trying to think of something but in this case it will not work or it will be the end of a lot of D1 programs.
I see in the next five years from this playoff format it all about money and if an individual school whether it’s in a big 5 conference or not does not have the money to keep up with recruiting and to give incentives and all you can eat buffets and housing, then that school will have to either drop down to D2 or drop football completely. The big 5 conferences dos not want to break away and form their own division they will simply get rid of the little poor guys by one upping them on everything.
It’s what Ben Jay said that we need financial support to keep D1 football in Hawaii or we will not have it at all. It’s gotta come from the state because we do not have enough fans to give the money needed to be in the “haves” league.
I am in agreement with you Brad in that there is not enough money in the State. It has to come from TV or from island owning billionaires. If the billionaires don’t step up TV is it and TV isn’t gonna raise the ante during the same season the big boys play in. They might though if they felt there would be sufficient viewership from the football hungry public during the major conference “off season”.
