Taxing situation

You know none of Scott Harding’s punts resulted in a touchback last year.

You know Harding also is used as a slotback, punt returner, holder and offset kickoff returner.

But did you know that he pays taxes on his football scholarship?

As a non-resident alien, the Australian resident’s scholarship is considered taxable wages and subject to U.S. federal tax withholding.

Remember to thank Harding if that rail is ever built.

Jerrol Garcia-Williams exited spring training as a No. 1 inside linebacker on the depth chart.

Now there are  plans to use Garcia-Williams as an outside linebacker in several situations. Garcia-Williams, a junior who has never redshirted, is considered as a top pass-rusher. He finished with 67 tackles, fifth best among the Warriors, in 2013.

Aloha all! Getting excited because we will be able to visit with all our friends. Missed many of you in Vegas for the UH-UNLV game.

    Great Morning All!

Mahalo to Mr. Harding…and all the other hard-working and dedicated Warriors!

  7. midnight July 12, 2014 7:40 am

Hi ST. Just finished lunch – marinated salmon, rice, and broccoli, and came to the blog to catch up on the doings.

  8. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2014 7:40 am

    Midnight at the Oasis.
I liked that song until somebody told me “sheik” is supposed to be pronounced “shake,” which means it wouldn’t rhyme with “speak.”

  9. d1shima July 12, 2014 7:41 am

    Howzit midnight! 🙂

Hope you and your pardner are doing well and spread da word when you get back!

(Did I mention that it’s been awhile since the last Cattle Call?)

  10. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2014 7:42 am

Oh, sorry, drifted off. That’s what happens when I’m in the middle of a three-week vacation. C’mon, did anyone else notice I’ve been off the past two weeks?
    Hurtful, just hurtful.

  11. midnight July 12, 2014 7:42 am

D1 – sure will be nice to see your face again too. Not to forget your karaoke voice too.

  12. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2014 7:43 am

    Anyway, back to Midnight.
How long will you be staying in Hawaii?
I think we have a karaoke night coming up on Aug. 2.
Esme and JoJo have made verbal commitments.

  13. tommui July 12, 2014 7:43 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Thank goodness for Harding!

  14. Boolakanaka July 12, 2014 7:46 am

    Moderation???!

  15. midnight July 12, 2014 7:49 am

There are many Tsaikos that we are anxious to see again. Wonderful friends with “Hawaiian hearts”

  16. midnight July 12, 2014 7:54 am

ST – We will arrive on August 21st, so we will not be able to attend the August 2nd function. We have made plans to visit for five weeks. So we will be able to attend the first three UH home games, and tailgates too. We have to reconnect with friends and family, and go to the beach – Barbara and I used to go to the beach everyday when we were living in Hawaii.

  17. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2014 8:00 am

    Let’s see …
The Mountain West is paying $3 million of Boise State’s $4.1 million penalty for not joining what was once the Big East Conference.
I’m still stunned Boise has to pay an exit fee to a league it never actually entered.

  18. midnight July 12, 2014 8:12 am

Back to lurking. The weather people are saying that we may have our first 100 degree day tomorrow.

  19. Ipu Man July 12, 2014 9:35 am

Kudos to Scott Harding and Jerrol Garcia-Williams. Key pieces to the puzzle.

  20. jalansky July 12, 2014 9:45 am

USA Volleyball Cup, amazing and exciting Olympic wahine volleyball. They are playing tonight again. For those who are wondering whether they should or shouldn’t go, here’s a push.

  21. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2014 9:45 am

One of the keys to the move is the expected emergence of Simon Poti in the middle.

  22. al July 12, 2014 10:47 am

    nice depth at linebacker.

  23. al July 12, 2014 10:48 am

i just told several seattle folks that hawaii will beat thenk

  24. A-House July 12, 2014 11:18 am

me thinks that the MWC maybe taking a chance on Boise St being the premier school for the conference

may turn out different with new coaching staff

so, they are willing to pay a “defunct” conference $3,000,000 yet will NOT allow Hawaii to get relief on the “travel subsidy”? – shows how much the current Commish tinks of UH!!!

  25. innocent observer July 12, 2014 11:20 am

income taxes is not funding rail, it is the GET.

  26. SteveM July 12, 2014 12:01 pm

    Good morning everyone!

Just read Ferd Lewis’s story about the Manoa Maniacs section expansion displacing season ticket holders at the SSC. My first reaction was: Ben Jay doesn’t get it–even after the blowback from considering closing the red and yellow sections of Aloha Stadium. Fans have sat in their select seats on purpose for many years, so if you are going to displace them, you must be able to offer something better (in their opinion)… and in their opinion, there might not be something better or currently available.

But one thing stopped me from called the AD department total idiots… if the Manoa Maniacs are UH students, then getting them to the games and increasing the base is OK. We often criticize lack of student attendance and forget the teams represent their school…the one they are attending.

But the pono thing to do is have the Ben Jay or the coach personally call all the displaced season ticket holders and ask them where else they would move…and if available, give it to them at no additional charge.

  27. kapakahi July 12, 2014 12:03 pm

    #21,

What about ILBs Gener and/or Fonua?

  28. Kevin July 12, 2014 12:07 pm

A better run department with actual LEADERS would do all they can to take care of their paying fan base, BUT in order to do so you would need administrators and leaders that are there taking pride in what they do as opposed to elitists collecting paychecks as state employees.

  29. Kevin July 12, 2014 12:08 pm

    No passion.
    No common sense.
    ZERO consideration.
    No respect.

    All overpaid fools.

  30. lost July 12, 2014 1:20 pm

    25
    i don’t get it

  31. gobows July 12, 2014 1:21 pm

    is gener fully recovered?

  32. gobows July 12, 2014 1:22 pm

if the mwc actually sends payment…they are fools. that conference won’t last long.

  33. A-House July 12, 2014 1:28 pm

IMHO, the Bosie St luster is diminishing rapidly

what was their record in 2013?

  34. Ipu Man July 12, 2014 2:46 pm

    Any CFL action?

  35. st. anthony trojan July 12, 2014 3:14 pm

    Spot on KEVIN # 28, 29…

  36. Former UH Athlete July 12, 2014 3:15 pm

33… Peterson took them as far as they could go. Gonna be interesting to see if they can hang on a few seasons from now as I’ve noticed a decline the past couple seasons. They still have a good roster, but the gap between them and the rest of conference has shrank considerably.

  37. Da Punchbowl Kid July 12, 2014 3:46 pm

    Howzeet Gangeez! 😉

Scott Harding is da man. I doubt there is any better all purpose guy in the nation. Okay, lets tax him more! NOT!

    Defense looking tougher and tougher.

    August looms…

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  38. 808bowler July 12, 2014 4:09 pm

Nice. Just finish watch baseball tonight break down kolten wong power surge. Nice to sees local boy in the headlines.

  39. tom-warriornation July 12, 2014 4:51 pm

Anyone else planning on going to the UH road game at San Diego St. on Oct. 18; last year we had almost 200 Hawaii fans sitting on the visitor’s side mostly between the 50 & 20 yard line. If interested in joining our group again this year, email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

  40. Warrior Dave July 12, 2014 7:02 pm

It looks like the students are still behind the basket but moving to the other tunnel. Doesn’t make sense to me. Was better when they were closer to the opponent bench.

  41. Hilo-Warrior July 12, 2014 7:26 pm

Hey is anyone else going to the Rice game? Where dem Tsaikos at? My fam and I are in San Antonio and trying to find out whats going on before we buy tix.

Who else is ready for the season to start already?

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  42. Wes'side Warrior July 12, 2014 7:30 pm

    Howzit, Gang!

Lots of news to catch up on, as Midnight said. Eh… Aloha, Midnight and Barb!!! Looking forward to seeing you guys too… as long as my car not acting up again. As of now, it’s overheating just going from Honokai Hale to Waipahu and back. We’ll see…

Didn’t realize so many of our “alien” student-athletes are taxed on their scholarships. As if it’s not hard enough just to be student-athletes, performing at their utmost best both on and off the field. Extra kudos to them for making it happen… consistently.

  43. Wes'side Warrior July 12, 2014 7:32 pm

Kevin… your #28 and #29… nailed it again. What will it take to effect change from within? Or it is just a pipe dream?

  44. tom-warriornation July 12, 2014 7:37 pm

Hilo-warrior: got a group of 150 Hawaii fans sitting together at the 40 yd line right behind our team, including a few Tsaikos. Email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

  45. kapakahi July 12, 2014 8:03 pm

The Hawaii “Freak List” (i.e., Class of 2015 HS prospects)…….

  47. kapakahi July 12, 2014 8:23 pm

Sadly…..UH probably with no realistic shot at remaining uncommitted “freaks” (Kaumatule & Uluave).

  48. st. anthony trojan July 12, 2014 9:14 pm

    # 42…seems like that dude at farrington.. be causing all kinds of problems for them folks there on farringtons schedule huh…??

  49. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2014 11:57 pm

U.S. Department of Transportation subsidizes the cost of the rail.
The DOT earns money from federal taxes.
Thus, federal taxes helps pay for rail.

  50. Stephen Tsai July 13, 2014 12:00 am

Boise State will always be a contender.
First, it’s difficult for opponents to win on that blue turf.
    Second, it’s in easier division.
    Third, it has good players.
Petersen’s move made sense because he wants to win national titles, and it’s easier to do that from a Big Five conference.

  51. hatakeman July 13, 2014 12:53 am

Contending yes, but Boise St won’t be dominating the MWC, I believe there is a shift in power in the MWC. San Diego St and San Jose St are recruiting lights out for 2015. This follows successful 2014 recruiting. Sadly, Hawaii lags badly, but is capable of making up ground with potential transfers like Afalava and Robinson. Still, their baseline recruiting is falling short, especially in getting good DTs and DEs.

  52. tom-warriornation July 13, 2014 6:36 am

howzit st. anthony trojan–I only do the road game tickets; But I see they are only selling season & game package tickets now. Like most schools, they don’t sell single game tickets until later; as they want to give first chance for season ticket holders.

Yes; I feel recruiting should first start with QB, then the DT & DE with OL.

  53. Inyoface July 13, 2014 7:50 am

I think the recruiting has been pretty good actually.
