Draft day, baby!
Other than “Las Vegas,” no other two-word combo is deserving of being suffixed with “baby” and an exclamation point than “draft day.”
Football reporting is a ratio of 1:352 — one game story to 352 stories about other things, such as match-ups, injuries, players’ parents. training routines, and so forth. Draft day — actually, the three days of the draft — is the ultimate wrap-up to the past college football season. It is the best and most detailed reporting of “other things.”
College coaches and their media-relation directors make sure there’s only a limited amount of information available. But when a player’s college career has ended, that’s when we learn how fast he really can sprint 40 yards, the length of his right arm and the span between his right index finger and his left index finger, and how he’d answer this Wonderlic question: A boy is 17 years old and his sister is twice as old. When he is 23 years old, what will be the age of his sister?
Rappers want to be players, and players want to be Good Morning, America co-hosts, and in the circle of life, fans want to be general managers. And if Brandin Cooks gets picked at No. 18, we all can say: “Yes, yes, we could see that during Hawaii’s game against Oregon State.”
Sure, there are the snooty types who claim they “have a life” and condemn their draftnik friends for wasting their time. The thing is, those snooty types will be the first to yell on the day of their fantasy-football draft: It’s draft day, baby!
Does this post make any sense? Probably not. That’s because I’m giddy. It’s draft day, baby!
Enjoy today’s first round, folks.
First!
Baby!
ONE!
My son and I were two of four people watching the 10:05 p.m. showing of “Draft Day” at the Windward Mall multiplex last week Wednesday. And I’m not sure my son counted since he spent most of the movie texting his girlfriend.
Traded down.
So, on draft day, I think every post should include an exclamation point!
If I were the third pick I’d choose Kalil Mack.
This is a good draft for receivers, corners and QBs.
Guud Morning Tsaikos..bootiful day.
ah ha!….trick question….twice as old…?!@#@??###!
I hope the Texans don’t make the same mistake twice, by drafting a QB over Clowney! (Carr over Peppers in 2002)!
me hope some Warriors get an invite…
In contrast, the baseball draft is on the Internet, there doesn’t appear to be any limit, and the best players are exempt from the draft and can be signed as free agents.
NorthShoreFan:
It appears Tavita Woodard has the best chance to sign as a free agent.
Go Dolphins!!
Clowney was on Jimmy Fallon last night. He’s pretty entertaining.
Draft day, baby, yes!
come on vikes – aaron donald or justin gilbert!
8. Very deep RB too… Not top heavy but a bunch of solid guys…
16. You guys need a QB!
It’s like graduation day for the talented. They will find out where they will work in their field of hard work!
hope some team find room for Cofer too..
Colt was a better qb than Manziel.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Hoping Sean finds a spot!
17. Yup got my eye on Andre Williams and depending what team he goes 2, I might just might use a 4th or 5th rnd pick on him in this years fantasy football league! 16 team league
23. Going to be a bunch of 4th and 5th round steals at RB. I think Lache Seastrunk and Terrance West are 2 other late rounders who can be steals. I still think Tre Mason is the best overall in draft.
Draft Day ? We talking draft beer?
Beer Draft..
Jeezy:
Its Beer Draft.
You’ve got the No. 1 pick.
Which brew are you taking?
24. Yup right on point jeezy, I got my eye on Mason, I think his hands are better then some WR in this draft and some of them are going to get drafted higher then Mason, just based on size and speed! I think Mason is going 2 be a PPR beast if he goes 2 the right team! Maybe say the Saints!
1st pick. Stella Artois
Interesting pick. A Belgium-based brew that was introduced in 1926. There’s also a football tie. An ad appeared during the Super Bowl a couple of years ago.
NorthShoreFan is on the clock.
clock has expired. you lose your pick, NSF.
way to pull a minesota Vikings.
Good morning Tsaikos!
As usual, Redskins have to wait till tomorrow to get their first pick. 🙄 They need a trade like the one in “Draft Day”.
ST – that was the same night some of us Tsaikos saw the movie at Dole. You should’ve joined us.
1 guess for MrsC’s pick would be for Beer Draft. 🙄
Guinness!
Raider fans would argue for “just win baby!”
Red Stripe mon.
gobows, assistant commissioner tsai did not authorize that pick. you are fined $2M for drafting out of turn.
“Last Call” is on the clock
Keystone Light, baby!
The commish is probably at breakfast so many teams picking out of order
39.
Keystone Light is like the Karkov of beers
49ers Win! 49ers Win!
oh me dahlin, oh me dahlin
#41, that’s all I can afford….lol!
41. Could have traded out of the 1st round for that pick.
lol Budlight ain’t that much more
Good Morning Tsaikos!!! Woo Hoo…draft day!!!
In the Beer Draft, I pick Sam Adam’s Boston Lager. 🙂
re:#18, yeah, I’d take Sean on a FA contract vs. Ponder
Hope my Browns take Johnny
Football!!!!!!! Please!!!!!
J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets!!!
The “commish” tried to rest his eyes for a few minutes and ended up falling asleep until now. I suck at Beer Draft.
Remember the days when they didn’t sell Coors here? People had to bring it back, like it was Krispy Kreme. Remember the days when people used to bring back Krispy Kreme from the mainland?
The best thing about following sucky teams is draft day. Baby!
Arrogant Bastard IPA!
Good Morning Gangeez! 😉
#29 jeezy – Our great minds think like!
Though he wasn’t at Manoa for very long, but Larry Cole was a 16th round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys back in 1968. He started his career at Air Force, but transferred to UH for one year. He later earned a degree from the “other” UH, the University of Houston.
Golden Richards was also another “one and done” transfer for UH, after flunking out out BYU. He was a 2nd round pick of the Cowboys.

Whatever happened to Lowenbrau?
“Here’s to good friends, tonight is kinda special.”

Grant’s Weis Beer!
56
it went with the 80’s
Brandin Cooks going #22 to the Eagles.
Do they still sell Keystone Beer?
This year’s QB class is underwhelming, to say the least. They’re only in the equation in the 1st round because there are so many NFL teams desperate for a signal caller. Manziel is the most overhyped of them all. He is out of control, undisciplined, and will get injured sooner rather than later, if he plays. He doesn’t have Russell Wilson intangibles; the size to extend plays and take hits like Cam Newton; or the ability to run away from defenders like Colin Kaepernick. His production in college should be applauded, but what he did at that level will not translate to the pros. Troy Smith was a QB of similar size who won the Heisman AND a Nat’l Championship. Tim Tebow was a similarly overhyped media darling who accomplished more in the SEC. Vince Young was a better athlete at Texas and was able to will his team to a championship over Leinart and Reggie Bush. ALL of these QB’s didn’t make it in the NFL, (Vince Young is hanging by a thread as a backup). The same fate awaits Manziel.
Teams should be mindful of recent history. Teams that overreached for QB’s in the 1st round aren’t doing so well.
On Another Note
Congratulations to Rick Blangiardi in receiving one the UH AA Distinguished Alumni Awards last evening.
Student, player, coach, announcer, Na Koa President, and major philanthropist for UH through the years.
Johnny Manziel…breakout or bust?
Remember back when Oly and Primo dominated? You could tell as those cans were a part of a lot of those yarn knitted hats.
Yep, I’m old.
@64 Manziel I think has that IT factor but his off the field antics might get him in trouble later. I’m not so sure he can get away with what he did in college in the NFL.
Since we played them this year who would you choose
Marquisee Lee or Brandon cooks
Great Afternoon All! Baby!
My 1st round Beer Draft pick: Rogue Hazelnut Brown, baby!
It seems 300 is the magic number…over 60 passes gone in 15 minutes today, baby!
Aloha All! A few thoughts, Manziel, I am going out on the limb, but I am saying he will have a so-so career. At his size, while he was able to exploit college defenses, I am not sure he will be able to do that on a consistent basis in the NFL, year after year.
The nature of his game is to be elusive and dynamic, but at his size and speed, he is neither Michael Vick (much slower) or RG3 (much smaller). The current NFL, e.g its speed and power on D, quickly mitigates these type of players, even RG3 had to slow it down.
The guy I do really like is Cooks out of Oregon State, elite speed, great YAC, and you can plug him in day one as your no2 receiver.
and at 72 is kirin beer.
and 73 is me and st an trojan favorite, san miguel light
at 74 is alaskan lager. right col a house???
and 75 my favorite, NOH Ice Tea
Can we all agree to stop buying parking passes and wait until tomorrow at 12:01 p.m. (when the prices drop to their minimum price?). Reverse auctions remind me of the electronics auctions I attended on the mainland years ago. Okay decades. People would bid on a stereo item, and at the highest bid, everyone got to buy it at that price. Now if everyone agreed not to bid after the first person bid, well we’d all save a lot of money. It is true, that the crowd was made up of mostly of men wearing mullets and/or trucker hats. Now if we could all agree to not buy any passes until 12:01 p.m. this Friday, we’d all get the passes for the lowest possible price. Okay, stop whining. Time to go into Ebay mode!
Not sure if Manziel will be good or not, but he’s fascinating to watch.
At least a football player has less overall impact than a basketball player. You can miss on a Manziel or Clowney, but you’ll suffer for a while when you pass on Kevin Durant or Michael Jordan.
GoBows:
What happened to the 80s?
Then again, in 26 years and four months, I’ll be 80.
I think Manziel has a up and down career. He’ll have his RG3 type seasons… Followed by a few injury plagued seasons…. Not comparing him to Michael Vick but I think he has a similar type career where he looks really good, and other seasons where you scratch your head…
A moment of silence for Lee Marshall, the voice of Tony the Tiger.
In his honor, my other favorite Tigers:
> Boxer Dick Tiger
> Tiger Woods
> Tige Andrews (the boss from the Mod Squad)
> Tigger
> Mickey Lolich
> Shaqille O’Neal
> The Brady Bunch’s dog
What no, McKinley Tigers??….Your Roughrider bias is showing!

#93 – Trois Pistoles, my favorite Belgian-style. #1 draft pick for quality at a reasonable price goes to Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA. If you are on campus, first choice has to be 32-oz Rogue Dead Guy Ale.
another minnesota draft gaff
Love Manny’s IPA from Georgetown Brewing Company in Seattle. Unfortunately, only sold in WA state.
And the Manzil free-fall continues.
Going for the whole team, 24 bottles of Samuel Adams IPA variety pack from Costco. Comes out to $1 and change per beer!
In a way it’s good the further Manziel slides, then he can put on his “I’ll show you for not drafting me” act come start of NFL season.
God, I hope Dallas picks Johnny.
One draft guru said earlier this week that Johnny is their no 1 rated player.
As the Manao Company would sing, “Drop baby, drop baby, drop.”
124,125
jerry jones said that too
johnny football missed the cowboy bus
Wow, now its getting a little awkward for bruddha now.

Now if Max Whittex would pick The warriors!

118 Kalani: just visited the Rogue Brewery in Newport Oregon this past weekend. Agree with you on the Dead Guy. Did you know there is a Double Dead Guy?
Speaking of beer, Bridgeport IPA and Deschutes Inversion IPA are nice also. Oregon buddies introduced me to them.
How ‘Bout Dem Cowboys!

Fiji’s Bitter Beer.
And there is no “h” in Wittex.
whitey: Got buzzed on the IPAs, got to spend good times with friends, got to see eagles, turkey buzzards, and honkers, but was only able to catch cut throat trout which were no match for salmon gear. Will get another shot in a few weeks when we go back for graduation of my #2. Conditions supposed to be better with more fish coming through.
why you guys put down Johnny football!
dude is a first round pick, multi-millionaire, top 22, will play in the nfl, get buku bucks on endorsements, etc, etc.

anyhoo, beer draft…Black and Tan…with a Arturo Fuente on the side…mmmmmm..down by the beach watching the sunset….looking for the green flash…
nytal
Think it would be interesting if Texans pick up Derek Carr today. The very team that picked his brother, David, that turned out to be one of the biggest number one draft bust in history.
Great Morning All!
Jared Leaf. No one tops that one…
E Kala Mai.
Ryan Leaf
(healing thoughts for Jared Leaf)
JarMarcus Russell (poor work ethic) is probably the biggest bust in NFL history at Oakland. Speaking of the Raiders, there had been some interest they were interested in Carr. Think they have a fourth pick in the second round.
Jamarcus russell took the raiders money and never showed up.
