Depth perception

A couple weeks ago, a sportscaster (who hopes you all are having a pleasant evening) marveled at the leg strength of No. 36. The rest of us scramble-searched the roster to identify Ceejay Santos as No. 36.

That’s what happens when a football team begins to develop depth. Each practice, there seems to be a forgotten player who seizes the spotlight — morning light? — even for just one play.

The first spring practice, we scramble-searched No. 5 (slotback Quinton Pedroza) and No. 44 (tight end Tui Unga). And then, wait, there’s another No. 44, on defense who’s not Unga and not on the roster? We then were told there was an updated roster, this time listing linebacker Elijah Mataele as the second No. 44. For a while, No. 26 (Jason Muraoka) was running with the 2s before he suffered a hamstring injury, leading to the return of No. 34 (Faga Wily), who had been excused from practices while awaiting the birth of his first child. No. 87 (tight end Harold Moleni) also was excused as he prepared for the birth of his son, leading to the surprisingly strong play of No. 85 (tight end Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson). After Pu‘u-Robinson suffered a finger injury that kept him from contact drills, No. 88 (tight end Josh Long) stepped up. Long redshirted in 2013 after suffering a concussion prior to training camp. No. 42 (linebacker Austin Slade-Matautia) made  the interview-request list after one practice. Yesterday, No. 24 (Keahi Hogan) was requested. “Hogan? Is he on the team?” a UH official wondered. Hogan had missed practices while recovering from an injury, but he indeed was on the team, and he made a few good plays as a safety yesterday.

And that’s why there’s spring training.

* * * * *

The author of the petition protesting the volume of UH’s practices said petitioners are not seeking the workouts to move to 9 a.m. Instead, they are requesting that the “music and air-horn be disallowed at any time prior to 9 a.m., yet that at 9:01 a.m. the music may commence.”

Not often that 2 Iolani grads (Slade-Matautia & Hogan) make the interview list…..much less the UH football team.

About the students noise complaint issue, spring ball is almost done and no more practices until this Fall. One would think that a few weeks of spring practice could be tolerated. Of course, there are some of the students that think the Football team gets special treatment and exceptions and think that the Football players are getting a free ride for school (which they are not by the way).

But come on, seriously, practice is not everyday of the semester, it’s only for few weeks and it’s done. I could understand the complaining if practice was everyday Spring, Summer and Fall but it’s not. But it’s almost over for Spring training then all 600 students can get there hangover beauty sleep until 9am.

  10. tommui April 22, 2014 7:16 am

    Checking out a rumor:

I heard that Bruno Mars wanted to do a concert at Stan Sheriff but got turned down.

Was this a request only to use the site? Would it have benefited UHAD?

  11. jm2375 April 22, 2014 7:56 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Deal with the noise, students.

Counselor Mui – #10 – if UH MVB had gotten into the MPSF playoffs and hosted, the game would have been Friday or Saturday, so UHAD had to keep those dates open at the SSC.

  12. kaimiloa April 22, 2014 8:00 am

What times does the city ordinance regarding noise cover? Just follow those rules. I think its 10pm to 8am.

  13. Last Call April 22, 2014 8:18 am

True story about noise, just one of millions.

Not long ago in a middle class neighborhood outside of Phoenix Az residents had continuously filed complaints about a neighbors barking dog and the city never addressed the problem. One night the next door neighbor fed up and pushed over the brink by the barking walked next door with a shotgun killed the dog and the entire family of four.

Senseless yes but it could have been avoided.

Coaches for the UH Football Alumni Flag Football game will be Michael Carter, Leo Goeas, Al Noga and Manly Williams.

We’re still looking for more alumni players. If you would like to participate, please contact Joyce at 956-4513.

  15. tommui April 22, 2014 8:30 am

#11 jm2375 – thanks for the information – but do you know whether such a concert would have profited the UHAD (other than the rental of the SS)?

I would imagine that UHAD would not have gotten a cent from the parking.

  16. Tanman April 22, 2014 8:41 am

I think that 8 am is quite reasonable. As for 9 am, it sounds kind of late… if a student at UH gets up just after 9 am, he/she would have missed the first couple of morning classes already… May be you may have stayed up late because of work, may be you may have stayed up late because of studying. You cannot expect the whole world pause their activities just for you to stay in bed long after the sun comes up! What about those people who live next to the train routes on the mainland… Can they ask for the trains to stop running so early in the morning? What about the people who live next to the freeway? Can they ask to close the freeway in the morning?

  17. jm2375 April 22, 2014 8:50 am

tommui – #15 – IIRC, the monies from parking go towards retiring the debt from the construction of the parking structure, therefore, I believe the fees go to Auxiliary Services or whichever entity is responsible for the structure.

Since the parking structure is for the entire campus, I’m not sure how the determination would be made as to the proportion of the fees that would go to UHAD. Not everyone who parks in the structure on a game night goes to the games. I guess one could say that 90% of the parking fees collected after 5 pm on game days should go to UHAD, as well as 100% of the parking passes that season ticket holders are eligible to purchase.

  18. boolakanaka April 22, 2014 8:51 am

These kids??! I would hit Waikiki to all hours of the morning, and still be ready to roll in the morning for classes, and then go to practice–please.

Lux et Veritas, does not happen later in the day…..

  19. NorthShoreFan April 22, 2014 9:00 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful busy day.

Think of the noise as a early morning alarm. When you join the work force after graduation, you’ll have to probably wake at times between 4 – 7:00 am to get to work. This is great training for all you future employees.

boola…used to go party after work. Go jog Ala Moana then hit the bars and sometimes the night clubs around Keeamoku (university of Korea)…close the night club at 4:00am then drive home, shower and get back to work. My sup used to wonder if I was still alive when he saw me.

  20. madeinhawaii April 22, 2014 9:04 am

I believe the law allows the lawn and construction guys to start at 8 am… so 8 am shouldn’t be an issue. Otherwise, the Athletic Department should send some peeps around the dorm at 8 am with blowers and gas powered string trimmers… A few mornings listening to these and they won’t bother with the sound of music.

  21. hwnstyll April 22, 2014 9:07 am

Construction on campus starts at 7 am, there is always noise at 7am.
Music should be reduced to a certain decible, horns are fine.

  22. Don Weir April 22, 2014 9:11 am

Kuhio Bar & Grill for the warmup, Nemo’s to listen to Pops 1st set, close the Sty with Country Comfort, and get up and moving from Kailua to UH for Fujimura’s Shakespeare class at 8.
Was there any other way to graduate on time??

  23. NorthShoreFan April 22, 2014 9:23 am

Keeds now days..spoiled..but smat…no worry, bumby they learn…

  24. boolakanaka April 22, 2014 9:37 am

19, 22, 23 and other concerned parties…For real, I get concerned about the temerity of our youth sometimes!!? Shoots, back in the day, Mondays under Tomey were cardio days–24 timed 110 sprints.

A group of us, would meet in the parking structure, prior to running, and lets says we conducted, ground-breaking experiments on glaucoma mitigation. I won’t say who was present, except for one of the participants is probably the fastest person in UH history, another a starting undersized LB, and the other, a very very proficent Ulua fisherman now……hmmmmnnn???

  25. NotNasti April 22, 2014 9:37 am

I like how us old farts are suggesting acceptable noise levels for the students who live just a few yards from the grass practice fields. The football team should try to be a good neighbor. The “suck it up response” doesn’t work well on our own kids, and didn’t work well on us either. We don’t want to give the students another reason to boycott the games. In 2011, Mack’s last season, they stayed away in droves, the boycott, driven by social media, was a result of a crackdown on drinking (criminal citations) in the parking lot, and in the stands, by posting HPD and security to stand in their section and watch them the whole game. More students signed this petition than attend the games. How about bringing them into the fold? Move to Cooke field, turn down the volume, have the students select the songs, invite them to the field to “make noise,” etc. If they are invested in the team, their team, they will be more supportive.

  27. hossana April 22, 2014 10:26 am

Geezus, hate to take the hard line against the complainers about the loud noise emanating from spring football practice in the early morning but just tolerate it and move on…its not like its 365 dys. a year….geezus, these players and coaches are making a sacrifice coming in the morning despite they are scholarship players but they are playing for the university and the least you students can do is appreciate them for their sacrifice and the physical labors they have to endure while you’re snoozing in your bed after a nite of alcoholic binge so just shaddup and move on……….

  28. SteveM April 22, 2014 10:28 am

    Good morning everyone!

As an older person on the noise issue, I would consider two guidelines…

    1. The C&C Refuse collection states that trash should be on the curb by 0600 for pickup. The peacetime military in Hawaii starts it’s work day at 0700. Most places of employment (anywhere) typically starts at 0800. What time does the first UH classes of the morning start? I do not think any judge would support that 0900 is the earliest time to be up and about and making noise.

    2. Firecrackers cannot be set off within 1,000 feet of a hospital. Using that noise rule, are the speakers on the practice field within 1,000 feet of the dorms?

  29. rage777 April 22, 2014 11:00 am

Need to remember that the student fees are paying for the UHAD. Without them, there might not be any UH football. I know it’s like saying I pay my taxes and the police works for me, but still..

  30. Last Call April 22, 2014 11:38 am

I hate noise. I hate barking dogs, roosters, loud music, boomboxes, dirt bikes, people who talk loud, loud TVs. I’m a walking time bomb 🙂

  31. jeezy33 April 22, 2014 11:39 am

Are we still talking about music??? Geez… Turn the music down, everyone’s happy, move on… You don’t need to BLAST LOUD MUSIC to have a good practice… Just like you don’t need to blast music in a gym to get a good work out in..

  32. NotNasti April 22, 2014 11:58 am

SteveM: The petition maker didn’t say that the team couldn’t make noise prior to 9:00 a.m., they just asked that the team move to Cooke Field if they want to blast the music. The grass practice field is less than a thousand feet from the dorms. Also, not all students attend class at the same time. My daughter’s classes start in the afternoon, and so she wakes up early to study. If she were in those dorms, it would probably drive her nuts. And no, she doesn’t drink or party all night (unlike me, when I attended UH from ’79-’82).

  33. st. anthony trojan April 22, 2014 11:58 am

    # 25 good points..my 2 pesos worth….get a liquor commissioner dude with his decibel reading meter….go to the dorms at 7:00 am….take a few readings from several places…n compromise on a noise level between the parties involved…that both can live with…

    C & C now has a decibel level….let that be a guideline….n both should be happy….n if can’t compromise…then go ahead with other steps….

We all have to remember…n realize…tolerance with noise levels are usually different for a group of neighbors….hence a decibel level as adopted in the C & C noise level code…

    IMUA warriors…stay injury free…

  34. st. anthony trojan April 22, 2014 12:04 pm

forgot….i guess if was me there… I would give mr. chow ‘carte blance’ with his music n horn…only because…me just remove my hearing aid…then go moi moi….he he he

  35. Kevin April 22, 2014 12:05 pm

Some of the people not appreciating the loud music over the speakers in the morning aren’t just alcoholic binge drinking partiers.. some are other student-athletes.

  36. A-House April 22, 2014 12:11 pm

    jm #17:

they can use income from a “regular”, non-sport event nite; income from a sport(s) event nite; take an average and split the funds % wise

should be easy to get parking records over the past 3 years – just time consuming and who would want to do that? tedious work, but can be very beneficial to UHAD

recommendation: ask students in the Statistics class to do this as a “project” and be graded on it.

  37. The Petition Starter April 22, 2014 12:12 pm

    In response to why 9 a.m.;

There are precedents on campus that state 9 a.m. as the time at which quiet hours are over. I agree most students are not still sleeping that late, however quiet is also needed to study, and invasive sounds make for an off putting morning in which students need to gather their thoughts and precede to either work or class.

A viable solution would be to practice on the Ching field, when practices occur there there is almost no disturbance in the dorms nor violation of quiet hours. The other solution would be to practice on the field adjacent to the dorms at 7:15, yet without the accompaniment of the music and air horn. The football administration at current seems to be sidestepping a reasonable compromise, hence the legislative efforts the student body is currently undergoing.

If you also believe these are viable solutions, feel free express your sentiments directly towards Norm Chow and Brad Jones. The students want a viable compromise that protects students rights, as well as the rights of student athletes.

    Mahalo for your concerns.

  38. The Petition Starter April 22, 2014 12:14 pm

    In response to #35

Kevin makes a very valid argument. Not only has the Wahine Soccer team been mentioned in the ASUH resolution but I also know of one football player in particular who signed the petition. When I asked him if he did not like the music he replied, “No, but I was not feeling well and missed practice the other day. So I do not believe it is fair to residents that we make that much noise” – A student athlete on the football team, whom lives in the Freshman Towers.

    rage777:

#27 – student fees goes to UHAD to help it offset expenses

however, football program existed without the “fee” they now pay

perhaps, some day, some one at UHAD will be able to release exactly what football earns, what expenses directly related to football, and amount football pays to support the other low revenue and non-revenue sports – then, we can see, transparency, if football by itself is profitable or not

do the BCS schools really need the “extra” bennies to attract the “cream”? no, they already get those – just want to show what the 1% can brag about.

  44. Old School Dave April 22, 2014 12:40 pm

Prime rib vs chicken long rice. You have to believe that the training tables at Texas, Oklahoma, or Texas A & M looks a lot different than the one at UH.

  45. Andrew April 22, 2014 1:00 pm

    43. & 44

That’s going to be a huge recruiting tool. Of course going to a school that could provide them good free meals will look a lot more attractive than ones that may not be able to or are able to but can only provide the bare minimum.

With all these new potential and possible future benefits for student athletes I see this as the beginning of the end for mid major programs unless the big BCS conferences break away from the NCAA.

  46. Andrew April 22, 2014 1:10 pm

Although they always talk about how the NCAA makes billions off of the TV deals, tournaments, etc. One would think they should be using some of that money to help out the schools in affording to provide these new benefits to the student athletes.

  50. st. anthony trojan April 22, 2014 1:55 pm

The way I see it..’ Mr. Ben Jay is not ‘localized’ yet…

There is no one on the face on this earth….that can top Hawaii for there compassion and charity
    in giving to anyone…from any race…religion…or creed….

I asked about the training table several weeks back…cuz I wanted to know how it works…did not really get a answer…maybe this the wrong venue….

My idea was to ask the fans at the Washington game to donate one or more canned goods..(rice, saimin) etc. when they attend the game, to be used for the training table…

You have to get the fans involved…this way they buy into the team…Mr. Jay, many who attend games cannot afford a $1,000 donation…not even $500….not even a $100, but you ask them to bring food…and you will have probably 50,000 pieces of food there that nite…go n ask Safeway and Foodland for shopping bags….ask the Army or National Guard if they will help with the trucks for transportation…get other people involved…ask the Saiko’s to help out at the gates…

Then get the team involved…and unload the next day…maybe only seniors…some may see this as very simplistic…but to an athletic a can of Vienna sausage may not be much for us…but for him that same can be a nice snack at nite…

Same time can start a food bank there as the next step for all sports….when space n resources become available…

Should have a goal of 100,000 items or cans or what have you…and make this an annual affair so it becomes a tradition…like senior walk.etc….maybe even first and last game…and can do for all paying sports…softball…baseball…basketball etc…so all fans attending that sport will be involved…and help and ‘buy’ into that particular sport…

I just hope Na Koa or the Tsaiko’s do it….if the sports dept. does not..you need to open the door for many of these thousands of fans..to help and get involved…..they should be given the opportunity to do so
    DON’T SHUT THEM OUT

  51. jeezy33 April 22, 2014 2:02 pm

    49. Move the game times early…. Find a way…. Because I hardly doubt Hawaii would have hosted…

  53. 1 April 22, 2014 2:38 pm

The real reason Bruno Mars Concert at SSC was turned down was because Stevie Wonder had reserved it!

  54. Andrew April 22, 2014 2:39 pm

    50.

That’s a whole lot of spam, corn beef, and cup noodles coming their way. Surprised they haven’t thought of that for a hawaii food bank type of drive either.

  55. st. anthony trojan April 22, 2014 4:36 pm

yea kinda sad… all of the athletics up there can really use it…cup of noodles at times does wonders for a starving athletic…with a empty stomach…not just football players……n the truly sad part is….thousands will help if asked …I am sure you would…along with most on here..

  56. Old School Dave April 22, 2014 4:40 pm

The idea has been mentioned before, but how about getting the KCC Culinary Arts Dept, along with their students (earning credit in the process) to operate a dining facility for the athletic department?

I thought the petition was very reasonable and a great meet you halfway solution. Practice goes from 7-9 for two hours. So no music for the first hour, then music for the second hour from 8-9. Our guys get the music and the dorms get no noise until 8AM– just like all of us under the noise ordinance.

  58. st. anthony trojan April 22, 2014 4:53 pm

    # 56 not so….makes no difference who cooks the food or prepare it…the idea is to get the
food n get the fans involved…completely different issue…

  59. jiminycricket April 22, 2014 5:16 pm

The reason why they are giving the athletes more food and lots of other new benefits ( the 5 power conferences have already announced 7 new benefits that will take place end of the year) is not because they are good guys. The only reason is they are deathly afraid that the athletes will petition to be deemed employees and form unions and shift the balance of power and give the athletes some say in NCAA sports . Kain Colter and the Northwestern football players have really shaken up the NCAA and the schools. Classic response is to offer more benefits to forestall even greater changes like workers comp insurance for the athletes so they are covered after they graduate and are compensated for injuries that are permanent or partial permanent, transfers without redshirting, etc. Now Northwestern football players may not actually vote in favor of a union but all the Div. I schools are holding their collective okoles bc even if a union is voted down, the precedent is set that the athletes are employees unless Northwestern wins on appeal. The Northwestern president had so many requests from the presidents of the other Div. 1 schools about the union situation that he prepared and sent out a most frequently asked questions and answers to all the Div. I presidents. Big changes are coming. The extra meals are just part of it.

Easy solution to raise more revenue. Bring back June Jones. The year Mcmackin took over after the Sugar Bowl, there were over 27,000 season ticket holders. Currently there are some 18,000 and dropping every year. With Jones back in the saddle, say the season tickets increase by 10,000 to get back to 27,000 and conservatively, $200 per season ticket. Voila! $2 million dollars right there. Let’s say Jones gets paid $ 1 million to come back (pay cut of $1 million from what he is making at SMU), he is adding $500,000 in expenses compared to Chow’s contract but he brings in $2 million. Net of $1.5 million. UH can’t afford not to bring JJ back.

    Ben Jay, where are you?

  60. gobows April 22, 2014 6:16 pm

Those whiners dont support the team…so the team shouldnt make any changes.

  61. madeinhawaii April 22, 2014 6:56 pm

  62. Derek April 22, 2014 7:09 pm

BCS teams can afford steaks, ribs, and prime ribs. Hawaii can afford poke bowls, chicken, and sushi.

  66. PurpleMaple April 22, 2014 8:16 pm

The football coaching staff is showing poor consideration to the student population. It’s as though they don’t consider themselves part of the student-university community where study and academics are the primary focus. If the loud music and airhorns interfere with study, then a change or changes need to be implemented. I like what Jeezy33 wrote…”Turn the music down, everyone’s happy, move on…”

  67. 808lurker April 22, 2014 8:46 pm

I ‘m a former HPD PO. At one time, I was assigned to the patrol sector that included the UH Manoa campus. During one evening shift, I recall we received numerous loud music complaints from residents living on a street that ran off University Avenue (Kahoaloha Place) located just makai of S. King Street. When the first officer arrived there, he couldn’t determine which high rise building the music was coming from. He then called for assistance, stating that all four of the buildings had to be checked, floor by floor, to determine which building the music was emanating from.

As I drove to that location, I couldn’t hear any music from University Avenue or S. King Street. However, as soon as I got to the location of these complaints, the music was so loud I couldn’t believe it. I recall we all got out of our vehicles and scanned all of the building but couldn’t determine where the music was emanating from. Then, one of my beat partners recognized the music and identified the rock group that played that particular song.

We then realized that this was the same rock group that was putting on a concert that night at the Andrews Amphitheater. Because sound travels upwards, we couldn’t hear the music from street level, but the sound was apparently hitting the first building and bouncing off and ricocheting from building to building.

We were then notified by our radio dispatcher that numerous other loud music complaints were being received from other areas in our sector, mainly from residents living in high rise buildings located on Date Street and Kapiolani Boulevard. Later, we learned that residents living in high rises on Ala Wai Boulevard in Waikiki had also filing loud music complaints. There was even a complaint made from a resident living in a high rise near Kapahulu Avenue adjacent to Kapiolani Park.

When I went to Andrews Amphitheater to tell them to lower the noise level of the band, I was informed by the special duty HPD officers working the concert that an inspector from the health department had measured the noise levels at the beginning of the concert and found the noise levels to be in compliance with state laws. Nevertheless, I made sure the noise level was toned down before I left.

I’m not taking sides on this issue, but just bringing up an actual event that occurred at the UH Manoa campus involving a loud music complaint.

#59 Get over June Jones. He is history. He is not gathering points in SMU country with his complaining about facilities.

Jiminy your math is a little off. You forgot whatever buy out clause JJ has in his 2mil a year contract that runs till 2017.

For the most part I agree with Jeezy’s point of view. The only time simulated crowd noise(loud music) should be allowed is during scrimmages or when the team is working on running on a silent count.

This is why UH is a terrible team. Their fans are weak, dumb with soft skulls who argue over the mundane.

#39: A-house, I understand it goes to UHAD in general, but don’t you remember before they enacted the student fees. The city council was talking about giving up football or moving it to the FCS division because football was hemorrhaging money. Sure the football team makes the most money, but they also lose the most money when things aren’t going well.
