This spring, the UH coaches have kept to their promise of maintaining a relatively equal competition at quarterback.
Although Ikaika Woolsey, who was in the opening lineup for two games last year, has taken nearly all the first turns in quarterback drills, Jeremy Higgins has received an equal number of reps. Taylor Graham has been on a restricted snap count while he works toward full good health following surgery to his left (non-throwing) shoulder in December.
By sticking to a schedule in which the starter’s job won’t be named until after the first week of training camp, it allows the quarterbacks to focus on the expanded offense.
Chow said the quarterbacks, particularly Woolsey and Higgins — both compete in the drills in which the QB may be hit — are “getting better every day. That’s what practice is for. If you want to challenge for the job, you can’t sit back. You need to be aggressive. Both Ikaika and Jeremy are doing that.”
Chow added: “We’re trying to be fair. Whether that’s the right thing to do or not, I don’t know. Sometimes you don’t give a guy enough reps. I tried that once before and it didn’t work. At the end of the day, we tried to be fair, and we weren’t fair to anybody. We’ll see. We keep count, and we track the reps. So far, so good.”

The final two weeks of spring training should be interesting following yesterday’s moves: Tui Unga from tight end to defensive line; Penitito Faalologo back to fullback.
The moves are designed to get both on the field quicker.
What happened to David Fangupo?

Fangupo didn’t meet the requirements to play this year, so he either is heading or already headed to a junior college.
Like all grayshirts, they held the scholarship through this semester.
Last year, it did not appear Tevita Lataimua would earn enough credits in time to be eligible.
But he made it, and now he has a chance to be a starting inside linebacker.
Dejon Allen also was not eligible the first year after high school. But UH stuck with him, and he kept working, and was able to join a year later. He’s a backup guard this spring.
Something tells me he’s in the kitchen. Most treadmills can only hold up to 300lbs so he needs to run outside. No that wasn’t the bus early this morning it was Fangupo!
Once Beau Reilly comes in the mix it’s going to be hard for Coach Chow to decide the starter for sure. He will need to break it down like “the Bachelor” but instead of giving roses it will be footballs.

Yesterday’s practice was a struggle. It’s the halfway point.
It’s interesting to see how the players are adapting to their new body types. Keith Kirkwood, for instance, might become the next Phillip Payne.

I have been looking forward to seeing David Fangupo in action but I guess it will have to wait. I was also looking forward to seeing Tigi Hill as well. Is he still on the radar?
Reilly is going to be behind Woosley, Higgins and TG to start the fall… But’s he’s the guy to watch this fall to see how fast he picks things up. I know he’s watching practices, and I’m sure he’s stumbled upon a copy of the playbook, but it’s nowhere near the same as actually participating.
Based off the film I could see, Reilly has the best physical attributes for the modern offenses of the current U QBs. Good arm, mobile and tall. It’s a bonus that he’s going to be a 20/21 year old freshmen. It’s just a matter of how fast he gets re-acclimated to football after the mission. He’s got a chance to be like Mariota with maybe a little less arm.

1 week you have everyone raving about Tui Unga being the “next Itula Mili” catching passes down field and making big plays…
Then next week you have Coach Chow saying he wants Unga to make an immediate impact so switches him to D because he wasn’t making it on offense…
I guess you just don’t believe anything you read in Spring Ball because it’s mainly to get people excited.

I think you’re right. It’s fun to watch players in the spring and speculate about their performances, but we really won’t know anything until that first snap in the fall. I will say that the Warriors look bigger faster stronger and in better condition, and we will have some studs in the line up, but beyond that, like any team on any given practice, the Warriors are a work in progress.
The only thing I believe for certain is that I believe in our Warriors, and their coaches.

I’m gonna go to all the home games regardless how we look but I’m going to ignore all the smoke and mirrors for now because spring ball really is just a time for fans to get excited about the upcoming season… Even with a good spring, its 10x more important that the players don’t slip during the summer where they will be required to stay in shape, eat healthy, train, learn the play book on their own…
Well have a better gauge on this team by the time they practice on base.

Agreed. Spring ball is just a time to cross your fingers and hope that key players don’t get injured and that injuries as a whole are kept to a minimum.
Marriota is an alma mater at one of my schools, Nuuanu Elementary. 🙂

I think Unga could play either TE or Dline, after watching saturdays practice I think Dline needs him more. His long arms will occupy so much prime real estate on that weak side edge teams will have to go around him, and that is exactly what a 3-4 wants to happen.

#38 – Punahou QB probably made the right decision for him and his family. Volleyball is his likely future. He may have a chance while in school to practice and play with the National Men’s VB team similar to what Micah Christenson is doing. Football may or may not be in his future.
Me gots the feeling that Ola Gouveia will make a quiet, but huge impact on the defense. Guys lke him and Naeole have football experience and knowledge oozing out of every pore on the surface of their skin.
Thank goodness Unga is going back to DL. Who the heck wants to tackle him as a TE in 11 on 11 drills during pracice.
I think we have three very capable QB’s already on campus. In my opinion we should allow Beau Reilley time to settle down and get reacclimated to the game. He may have other thoughts though.
Also think that the returning St. Louis QB has a lot of upside. I think he’s reallly under the radar right now.
Want to get on the field quicker? Pay attention and stand near the sideline.

UH had better offer Coach Beemer a raise before he gets snatched up by some BCS school. From I’ve read, Beemer has done some impressive things training wise and nutritionally with the UH players during his year and a half at Manoa.

I’m looking for a good QB battle this summer. In 2012 Chow handed the job to SS, in 2013 he handed the job to TG and both times it didn’t work out so well. So I hope whoever is the starter this year will have to actually earn it.
In # 49 the Bishop Gorman story, they mention quarterback Danny Hong already has an offer from Hawaii. Anybody know about him?
The NCAA’s Legislative Council approved a proposal Tuesday to expand the meal allowance for all athletes.
The proposal would allow Division I schools to provide unlimited meals and snacks to all athletes, including walk-ons. The measure still must be approved by the board of directors, which meets April 24.

Hawaii men’s basketball starting point guard Keith Shamburger has requested a release from the program, a move UH is expected to make official by Wednesday.
The 5-foot-11, fourth-year junior gave some cryptic indications on his Twitter account on Monday night, then tweeted “waiting for a release .” around noon on Tuesday. Sources close to the team confirmed his intent.
Shamburger’s apparent desire is to earn his college degree this summer, which would allow him to play immediately for another Division I team. If successful, it would be his third; the Los Angeles native began his career at San Jose State and played two years there before transferring to UH in 2012 and redshirting a season.
He averaged 9.3 points and 5.4 assists per game in starting 30 of 31 games for the Rainbow Warriors in 2013-14, helping them to a 20-11 record.
Shamburger’s indications of his desire to leave came almost immediately after junior college guard Roderick Bobbitt announced a commitment to play for UH starting in the fall.
Shamburger did not respond to requests for an interview. UH coach Gib Arnold, who is on the mainland, declined comment.

I remember when, for a couple of years, there was a game between Hawaii HS All-Stars against a California All-Star team that was held at the old Honolulu Stadium. I believe one year the California team’s QB was a young man who was head to SMU by the name of Casey Ortiz. Another year the Cal team had a RB by the name of Bill Fudge who was a big-time USC recruit at the time.
63. Nope, haven’t heard of Danny Hong, nor was I aware an offer from Hawaii was made. Seems to be a Cali kid from Thousand Oaks. Also had an offer from Columbia, as well as interest in Harvard, Yale and handful of PAC12 schools. Attended Pro day at Princeton early this month.

#75 Al, Mike Cherry did a piece on WBB the other night, he mentioned that Beeman doesn’t not have a contract extension and that her contract ends next season. She stated on the air that she is committed to Hawaii and she is recruiting and training the girls as though she’ll be here for a while, but she smiled and said you never no.
I don’t understand these young men who cannot be true to their commitments. It is the one of the character traits that helps to establish the internal strength as you move through life challenges.

Why single kids out when they want a change of location and oppurtunity when coaches ,AD’s,and professors can leave anytime they want. As long as the kids follow the rules then it should be fine. Kids have only 5 years to play so let them choose where they want to be.

I’m looking at spring camp this year more than any other. I hope we have no sked ballers that’ll go up and get it. It’s do or die time. Coach Chow has laid the foundation and has his players to do it.
The BLACK HOLE known as upper campus continues to this day. Gib burned them once and now Gib and Laura waiting??? Sad.
After 3 years, how come we still don’t have a “real” tight end? It seems like all our tight end candidates are converted defensive linemen. For that matter, if Chow is such a QB guru, shouldn’t there be a parade of QB prospects coming in? Our top QBs this spring are still McMackin recruits. SS was great down the stretch last season, but hardly what I had in mind when Chow took over.

Biggestuhfan, Clarke Evans (completed his eligibility), Harold Moleni and Josh Long were recruited as TEs. Not enough depth so Chow moved D players like Puu-Robinson to build depth. So you’re right in that Chow has not been overly successful in filling this position adequately. As for QB, I think Chow really counted on TG to step up to take control of the offense. It didn’t happen. You’re right again, Chow has not brought in a parade of highly recruited high school QBs. The converse is realistic. But Chow did recruit Zwahlen. We just don’t know how good he is or even if he will honor his commitment to UH. So besides Woolsey, only Reilly can be counted on to be around next season (2015). Still, I like what Chow is doing in building a very respectable team. We need to see the results this coming season.

While the strategy of getting more exposure for Isaac Slade-Matautia (by transferring to Bishop Gorman) might make sense since he still has 3 full seasons yet to develop his potential towards becoming an FBS prospect, don’t know about the strategy of having older brother DB Quinton transfer from Iolani to Kaiser HS just for his senior season….with Raiders graduating their top DBs (Look & Los Banos)……and especially now with Miano & Ikei gone.
I guess it just comes down to parents’ values and priorities.

If Iolani is again playing a D2 schedule there’s just no way he gets seriously scouted playing the likes of Damien, Pac 5, etc. unless he is simply just that good, a can’t miss type of kid. I would never pull my kids from private school for sports but I understand, especially if a scholarship is the only way he goes to college. Or like in the case of my friends kid who is an exceptional athlete, one who made first team all-oia this year as well as all-state. Iolani cut back on the financial help he had gotten the previous two years and the family just couldn’t afford tuition without the aid. Issac on the other hand would have had big time offers no matter where he played. He’s pretty special.
I know this was brought up by jeezy earlier, but what the heck happened? Who was the one over-hyping Unga? The coach or the media? How the heck does a report a week ago say that the TE is turning heads and will be a big contributor to the coach now being quoted as saying he wasn’t making progress on offense?
That is a very discouraging report. Also, what was thought to be one of our strengths going into this season was supposed to be the D-line. Now people say the D-line needs help so offensive players are moving there?
The romance period of the return of football is starting to wear off. What is really going on?

kev-1…this matter of transferring elsewhere is not a hawaii basketball trend.
looking in our backyard, nearly every sport experiences it.
nationally its every where. we are not alone.
asu for example has 5 transfer-outs this year.
And I gotta say, there is no real comparison of Reilly and Mariota, on either a physical level or even qualitatively. Marcus, had a legit sub 4.5 speed, where I think Beau is topping out at 4.8. I am not saying Beau might pan-out at some point, but right now, not even in the same breath is more appropriate.
One is on the very deep end of a QB depth chart, on a team with double digit losses, and the other plays for one of top 5 BSC teams, year in and year out, and has a host of film, that many say will make him a top 5 pick in the 2015 draft. To say, this is apples and oranges, is to say the least.
