Spring ball, part 2

Weather was nice. People were pleasant. Everyone got along today.

Here are the highlights from today’s practice:

> Ikaika Woolsey got the majority of reps with the first-team offense this morning. Don’t take anything from that. UH remains faithful to a schedule that will extend the quarterback competition through this summer. But Woolsey made some nice throws, in the pocket and on the run, and also benefitted from solid line play. Left tackle Elijah Tupai and right tackle John Wa‘a are raw — they made a couple of mistakes — but quite talented. The edge-blocking positions will be competitive.

> Remember how open opposing tight ends used to be on routes across the middle. Tui Unga, a block-and-release guy, is that sort of tight end. He’s big (6-5, 260), agile and is a reliable receiver.

> Joey Iosefa impressed with his downfield quickness; he ran a couple of deep streak routes. He also showed he could accelerate after the catch.

> Running back Jason Muraoka is proving to be a back similar to the NFL’s Danny Woodhead.

> Beau Yap and Jeremy Castro have made an easy transition into outside linebackers — hybrids in the new 3-4. Each has the flexibility to align on the line of scrimmage or in pass coverage. In team drills, Yap nearly had an interception on Tuesday and he soared to deflect a pass this morning.

> Trayvon Henderson might be the answer to who will start at safety opposite Marrell Jackson this fall.

i think practice today will be a highly productive one and hopefully those at practice can see the difference between the strength and speed of the offense and defense compared to last year at this time.

Good point counselor, very good point….

  30. tommui April 3, 2014 9:28 am

What is the story behind the Miano resignation?

  31. boolakanaka April 3, 2014 9:43 am

30–Honorable one, I thought it was that he got a regular 9 to 5……

  32. NotNasti April 3, 2014 9:49 am

Re: Ronald Ching. Twenty-six years ago, as a rookie attorney, I was assigned to represent an underworld figure on a manini (misdemeanor) case in the district court (I won’t reveal his name). The rumour was that he was a reputed “hit man,” and an associate of Ronald Ching and Charlie Stevens. As we stood while the judge entered the courtroom, he leaned over to me and said, “If you don’t win this case, you’re dead!” As he noticed my face turning white, he said, “just joking.” After we sat down, he leaned over me again and whispered in my ear, “but you better win, or else.” He then leaned back and gave me a huge, toothless grin. Needless to say, I’m still alive.

  33. boolakanaka April 3, 2014 10:02 am

Counselor..nothing like the fear of god, or an equal plane, Hawai’i’s most feared and famous hit man to expedite your legal skills. You have read my own interaction with Sir Ching…long story short, he bought us a round, way back in the day, in a dive bar off of Keeaumoku.

As for Uncle Charlie, they use to live by some ohana of mine in Waianae. Which brings up a true story, I use to spend weeks at my cousins house in the summer time, and whenever we use to see his dark continental, of course, my cousins would whisper, “bruddha, syndicate, syndicate…” One sunday night, real late like past 11:00pm, we riding back on our bicycles, like 3 or 4 of us, the continental pulls up to us…and we were way back in Waianae Valley, and everyone knows, its pitch-black back there. The window went down a little bit…and we hear “nah, just kids..” Hmmmn, what was Uncle Charlie doing way back there, near midnight, on a Sunday night….????? I don’t want to know.

  34. NotNasti April 3, 2014 10:08 am

Our current generation of youngsters would not know what we meant if we whispered “syndicate” to them. The guy I represented was on parole, and was facing revocation if he was convicted of even the slightest offense. Hence, his encouragement was a gentle reminder to me that he valued his freedom as much as I valued my life.

  35. boolakanaka April 3, 2014 10:12 am

Counselor nothing like a motivation that has a recipocal quality, to get the wheels of justice spinning.

  36. boolakanaka April 3, 2014 10:15 am

On the other hand, NotNasti, back in the day, when we are all young, any big local, wearing one aloha shirt, driving a Monte Carlo or the like, pomade in da hair, with one jade pinky ring, would be sufficient to warrant whispers of ” syndicate, syndicate”.

  37. PONO April 3, 2014 10:44 am

Ben Yee or Leland Yee? If you don’t know who Leland Yee is look him up.

  38. boolakanaka April 3, 2014 10:46 am

Didn’t Leland just get popped in federal racketeering chargers, including gun trafficking??

  39. PONO April 3, 2014 10:49 am

Yeah sure did. He could literally deliver when fans say we need to find some players with some guns.

  40. LizKauai (mbp) April 3, 2014 10:59 am

    Go Warriors!

  41. boolakanaka April 3, 2014 10:59 am

Bruddha should no better than to have a bowl of jook with triads.

  42. kawika49 April 3, 2014 11:00 am

Nice to know, we have blue eye associates here.

  43. Lowtone123 April 3, 2014 11:06 am

Word in Texas is that Max Wittek has taken a second visit to view spring practice. His family has accompanied him this time. Texas may be the frontrunner for Wittek.

  48. SteveM April 3, 2014 11:12 am

    Good morning everyone!

The Star-Advertiser online poll today is, “Do you think UH coach Norm Chow was out of line for canceling interviews on the first day of spring training, due to a rift with a sports columnist?”

    Vote at: http://poll.staradvertiser.com/

  49. boolakanaka April 3, 2014 11:14 am

Out of line or cut in line?

  50. al April 3, 2014 11:23 am

i guess the topics of discussion by some counselors here is under one of the “f” categories as in “family”.

    therefore,
    family or familia or syndicate?

  51. NotNasti April 3, 2014 11:27 am

    syndicate

  52. whitey April 3, 2014 11:30 am

  54. ai-eee-soos April 3, 2014 12:15 pm

    Practice report …

Woolsey gets most snaps at QB during Thursday practice. by Stephen Tsai

University of Hawaii quarterback Ikaika Woolsey got the majority of work with the first-team offense during the second practice of spring training this morning on the school’s grass practice field.

Woolsey’s rotation status did not mean he had solidified a place atop the depth chart. The Rainbow Warriors remain faithful to a schedule of extending the quarterback competition through the summer.

  55. ai-eee-soos April 3, 2014 12:17 pm

… right on, Beau Reillly …

” … Quarterback Beau Reilly, who watched today’s practice from the sideline, is scheduled to join the Warriors in June when his scholarship is activated. …”

  56. ai-eee-soos April 3, 2014 12:18 pm

… geev um, Beau Yap …

Beau Yap, who played defensive end the previous three seasons, did well in pass coverage in his new role as an outside linebacker. The Warriors switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 front this spring, a scheme that allows Yap the flexibility of aligning near the line of scrimmage as a rush end or dropping into pass coverage.

  57. Lowtone123 April 3, 2014 12:18 pm

    Manapua or Dim Sum?

  58. NotNasti April 3, 2014 1:05 pm

    Charmin or Angel Soft (MD)?

  59. al April 3, 2014 1:26 pm

  60. jimmy the lock April 3, 2014 1:58 pm

Wie 5-under for the day, T2,

  61. jimmy the lock April 3, 2014 1:59 pm

    oversized head or stiff shaft?

  62. HALEAKALA April 3, 2014 2:07 pm

She seems to be playing better recently.

  63. HALEAKALA April 3, 2014 2:09 pm

    ai-eee: Thanks for the reports.

  64. Giversgain April 3, 2014 2:12 pm

    Star Wars or Star Trek

  65. HALEAKALA April 3, 2014 2:12 pm

From ST’s article: The Warriors also had planned to use running back Joey Iosefa sparingly this spring. Iosefa missed all or parts of eight games last year because of a foot injury. But Iosefa showed his surprising quickness in running pass routes during team drills.

  66. Boolakanaka April 3, 2014 2:21 pm

    Constipated or stuck sh$t?

  67. Warrior Dave April 3, 2014 2:29 pm

Mahalo Al & ST for clarification to my inquiry late last night.

  68. jimmy the lock April 3, 2014 2:42 pm

    Old timer or old fut

  69. NotNasti April 3, 2014 2:43 pm

    Intern or Extern?

  70. jimmy the lock April 3, 2014 3:10 pm

Hennessey Venom GT or Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

  71. Shoko April 3, 2014 3:15 pm

Good to hear their being cautious with Graham and Iosefa. Hope practice ends with minimal injuries.

  72. Shoko April 3, 2014 3:16 pm

    71. Prefer the Koenigsegg Agera R….if I was going to spend over a million dollars for a sports car.

  73. jimmy the lock April 3, 2014 3:20 pm

Shoko, I’d take the Hennessey…and a bottle of Hennessy.

  74. gobows April 3, 2014 3:23 pm

any thing to report on luke shawley or keelan ewaliko?

  75. gobows April 3, 2014 3:25 pm

    56

somebody should point him out to mike cherry…

  76. Shoko April 3, 2014 3:26 pm

Wyoming might struggle their first year changing from the Spread to Pro-Style. No quarterback and no seasoned offensive line. However, Coach Bohl sounds like an intelligent, old-school who doesn’t use a lot of catch phrases that I hear from most young coaches. Might take time for him to get things rolling.

Warriors should have a very good chance of getting that Paniolo Trophy back.

  77. Shoko April 3, 2014 3:28 pm

    74. Yes on the Hennessy, too. I guess you can’t go wrong when you buy American (Venom) unless its a GM vehicle.

  78. kris April 3, 2014 3:30 pm

    71. A cost no object choice for me, the McLaren F1
    IMO the original ultra-supercar

  79. Boolakanaka April 3, 2014 3:56 pm

Shoko and Jimmy, while I don’t have crazy rides as previously mentioned, I do have a 2008 S6 Audi, that I bought it on a total lark, (someone needed to sell it and go bye-bye, and was trying to raise some legal funds) I’m not a big car guy, the damn thing, is crazy to drive on the open road. In fact, I’m a tad scared of it, as it gets up to a 100, and it feels like 40– (must be that damn V10-,which is mortgage payment at the service station)so I’m uber cautious all the time. Good thing it gets out of the garage only 4-5 times a month–plus, Gotham is not a place to drive every day.

  80. Loa April 3, 2014 5:20 pm

    afternoon gang!

thanks for the practice report Stephen

  81. ai-eee-soos April 3, 2014 5:24 pm

… I hope Jeff Portnoy will be willing/able to UH sports in the next 5 years …

State Senate confirms four UH regents.

    The Senate confirmed Stanford Yuen, an engineering consultant and former special assistant to the Navy; Lee Putnam, a retired UH administrator;

    Jeffrey Portnoy, an attorney;

and Michelle Tagorda, a UH master’s degree student in public health.

Yuen, Putnam and Portnoy were appointed to terms that run through June 2019.

Tagorda’s term will run through June 2016.

… I hope Jeff Portnoy will be willing/able to HELP UH sports in the next 5 years …

  83. Old School Dave April 3, 2014 6:28 pm

Beau Yap moving from D-Line to linebacker. Could be another Chris Brown in the making?

  84. whitey April 3, 2014 6:58 pm

thanks for the practice report. sounds very positive and does seem that the team is ahead of last year at this time. go bows!!!

  85. whitey April 3, 2014 6:59 pm

congrats to mw on a great round. keep it going.

  86. jeezy33 April 3, 2014 7:16 pm

Unga might be a serious NFL prospect in 2-3 years… Lot of NFL teams are still looking for good blocking TEs that can be red zone threats in the 10-15 yard range.. I’m sure Unga can stretch in further in college bu in NFL, might be reliable in the short pass game and run game..

  87. jeezy33 April 3, 2014 7:19 pm

Also like the move for Henderson… He had pretty solid cover skills for a true fresh but its clear that his size and speed is built for Safety.. I know Marrell has started past 2 years but I would like to see Ewaliko push him. He did progress as much as I thought he should from year 1 to end of last season.. and I was real high on Marrell early on.

  88. Uh4eva April 3, 2014 7:31 pm

    chowtime or vonCrappin?

  89. Uh4eva April 3, 2014 7:34 pm

    4-3 or 3-4?
    Tomey or Tormey?

  90. al April 3, 2014 7:38 pm

62…lol! best one yet. i don’t even golf!
    but, i’ll take both.

  91. al April 3, 2014 7:41 pm

looks like we could still a very young team…but i love the potential and quality.

  92. kev-1 April 3, 2014 8:40 pm

jeezy or al . . . just wondering what you two great minds think about the Beau Yap move. I have been high on him for a long time. He has played inspired on the D-line considered sightly undersized, but has succeeded there. I am wondering if he has the necessary speed (rather longer distance speed) usually necessary for a LB. I heard he was with Ikei this off season, so I wonder if he anticipated a position change.

  93. kev-1 April 3, 2014 8:45 pm

Can anyone tell me how the heck Rich Miano qualifies for a management position in the shipping industry? I know it is none of my business, but my “who you know in Hawaii” resentment is getting the best of me.

  94. el burro sabio April 3, 2014 9:07 pm

It still seem like there are not enough bodies on both sides of the line. Hopefully it’s because I’m not good at math.

  95. st. anthony trojan April 3, 2014 9:34 pm

    # 94 Kev-1…managers are usually people who can get employees
‘to work as a team’ for the common good of corp. goals etc….seems
to me he did a excellent job at his alma mater the past two years…
doing that with a bunch of student athletics there…..

even with his sour grapes attitude towards coach chow…seems to me
he does have sum smarts….which is very visible to me ne way…for the position he will be trying to tackle…good luck 2 him…

if he can prevent a strike for the next 20 years or so…then we all know our ‘okoles’ will be covered…n no shortages of ‘ass napkins’ for all tsaiko’s…..he he he

  96. Da Punchbowl Kid April 3, 2014 10:03 pm

Thanks for the updates Stephen! Looks good. Getting very excited about the defense.

Any word regarding live contact plays on Saturday?

  97. Warrior Dave April 3, 2014 10:22 pm

    #94 Kev-1,

I thought Rich said he’s getting a Quality Assurance type position and not management as was previously floating around.

  98. jeezy33 April 3, 2014 10:24 pm

    93. I think it’s a much tougher move than being made out to be. I’ve never seen him cover opposing D1 caliber athletes so it would be really hard to judge not knowing… Im sure he would help the run game but against teams who spread you out and air it out, hard to tell…

  99. Warrior Dave April 3, 2014 10:29 pm

Rob DeMello is saying Safety. Manager. Sorry to confuse you Kev-1.

  100. jeezy33 April 3, 2014 10:32 pm

I think Beau Yap playing OLB is more of a trial run in my opinion. Like ST mentioned before, spring practice is time to experiment.

  101. kev-1 April 3, 2014 10:36 pm

Warrior Dave . . . thanks for clarifying. I just watched DeMello too. Again, it is none of my business either.

  102. Fei Jai April 3, 2014 11:12 pm

@94. The same way a lifetime assistant qualified to be uh hc. Who you know.

  103. Fei Jai April 3, 2014 11:16 pm

    69 camaro or bmw m5?

  104. kp3409 April 4, 2014 2:33 am

    M5 or S6?..

  105. kp3409 April 4, 2014 2:34 am

According to the article Yap said its NOT an easy transition.

  106. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 3:13 am

105-kp3409, I can’t speak for the M5, and I am sure its a beast, but driving the S6, especially on the open road, is close to love.

  107. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 3:44 am

    Katsu or Mochiko?

  108. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 3:45 am

    Fresh or day old?

  109. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 3:46 am

    Luau leaf or Luau feet?

  110. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 3:46 am

    Mucus or hana-butta?

  111. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 3:47 am

    Nathan Fletcher or Sista Palakiko?

  112. Loa April 4, 2014 5:07 am

    morning gang!

    NF was a beast

  113. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 5:14 am

I played against NF as a soph, and first thing I thought was, ” WTH do they they have this grown man, weighing 210+ pounds at safety…”…Fast forward like 4 years, I go down to Cooke field the bruddha is like 280 pounds playing NG.

  114. Loa April 4, 2014 5:20 am

boola – yep i remember NF. one of many from Waianae – faagai, toilolo, etc., and to me the best wedge busters – maneafaiga

  115. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 5:29 am

Max was a beast, no fear, good athletic skills, and loved contact. Too bad, he did not have the grades. The other guy I was always trying to avoid on a downfield block, as he had a meanstreak, and was a nasty bruddha, was George Paris…..George did not suffer fools.

  116. Loa April 4, 2014 5:40 am

yep, forgot about George. nasty buggah

  117. Loa April 4, 2014 5:42 am

would have liked to see Max carry on the tradition from Semeri at UH

  118. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 5:42 am

Plus even a junior in HS George looked like he was 29 and did a couple of years at Rikers.

  119. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 5:44 am

Actually, I guy I thought that was underrated, and could have played some college was Pisa Tupai (sp) at Kailua, he played DB, and bruddha could hit.

  120. Loa April 4, 2014 5:47 am

if i recall correctly, faagai was spooky looking too.. neva need mouth piece since never have front teeth. got me curious now and going try ask mr. google

  121. boolakanaka April 4, 2014 5:52 am

The meanest (in terms of looks and apperance) front four that I remembered was Farrington, they had Tali Ulufale, Peter Tomas,Matt Karratti,…etc I think this is their 78 team, and playing as a soph, all I could think was, ” these are all grown men with beards”. I had like 3 chest hairs, and they were all super thin.

  122. Loa April 4, 2014 5:54 am

Watson was a good friend of mine….really nice guy and just a good person. Its too bad, his knees were messed up when I was with him at UH, and I think, after a while he lost some of his desire to play.

K128-kp-Bruddha you got that…anytime that bad boy needs to go in, as it just come off its warranty, you need to verify your balance in your checking account!!? I never had a car above a V6, and so something with a V10, it was like driving in a space dimension the frist couple of times. And yes, long distance drives are the best….

  129. whitey April 4, 2014 6:47 am

I hope MW carries through all the way to Sunday and gets a W.

As for Loa’s link at 124…It made me think about three guys that either through injury or just tired of playing, never made it big in college. The three guys that come to mind are Willie Kamakana from Punahou ( I think 2 time all state FB and wrestling—incredible natural athlete and strength–I don’t thing he played any college ball at all); Bruce Millis from KS (was at UH initially, and bruddha could lift the world, when he was a soph it looked he was a college senior–got hurt and never cameback) and Kenneth Smith from Kahuku (another wrestler/football again, was just dominating in HS, but injuries got the best of him)
