Warriors add 3 walk-ons

Quarterback Hunter Hughes, wide receiver Terrence Sayles and defensive back Gaetano DeMattei have joined the Rainbow Warriors as walk-ons.

Each participated in the Feb. 21 tryouts. They have joined the offseason conditioning program and will participate in spring training (April 1-26).

Here are Hughes and Sayles:

  2. Kukui High School March 7, 2014 8:45 am

    Wow! I guess so.
    Congratulations to the walk-ons!

    Go Warriors!!!

    Go Nuts!!!

  3. jimmy the lock March 7, 2014 8:47 am

And they also get the nice shoes, gloves, and tee.

    GO WALK-ONS!

  4. jimmy the lock March 7, 2014 8:50 am

    …and shorts too.

DeMattei looks small on film. Bet he’s a one tough buggah though.

  5. Warrior Dave March 7, 2014 8:52 am

Prayers to Colt Brennan for recovery and may he lead a long and fulfilling life.

  6. tommui March 7, 2014 8:52 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    So sad about Colt.

  7. jm2375 March 7, 2014 8:52 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congrats to the walk-ons. Make the most of the opportunity!

Congrats to the Wahine softball and basketball teams on their victories last night.
Always nice to win on Senior Night.

GO WARRIORS! Beat the Anteaters (or whatever their nickname is)! Beat the cows!

    4. I’m waiting for Jordan Kovacs comparisons in a hour or so

  9. Shoko March 7, 2014 8:56 am

Sayles looks really tall, or Hughes is really short.

Whatever happened to that walk on last year who posted a fast 40 time. Think he had really long dreads.

  10. NorthShoreFan March 7, 2014 9:02 am

Healing energy to Colt…too bad it wasn’t detected earlier.

  11. NorthShoreFan March 7, 2014 9:08 am

seems Terrance has the strong desire to be a Warrior….make it happen Terrance!

  12. Kapahulu March 7, 2014 9:14 am

Prayers and Best Wishes for Colt Brennan.

  13. Warrior Dave March 7, 2014 9:25 am

I’m glad no one was provoked into throwing a punch at the UCSB knucklehead. He deserved it but it would have been tragic as we can afford to lose anyone going into the tournament next week.

Can’t believe security is so lax at UCSB. I mean he was able to walk back to his seat and high five his friends.

  14. Inyoface March 7, 2014 9:31 am

I think the UH basketball team is just missing a big guy in the middle. You need a true center on any team.

  15. jeezy33 March 7, 2014 9:36 am

    15. What about perimeter players? Missing a lot more than you think… Our guards rate average to the rest of the conference which reflects a middle of the pack team. Nevels is solid but when he is off, there has to be other guards who can create shots and score. Quincy needs more PT. Ability to attack rim and break down the zone.

  16. Kannackattack March 7, 2014 9:46 am

Hunter Hughes… can’t find much on him. How did he throw at the workout ST? How big is he?

  17. Warrior Dave March 7, 2014 9:47 am

I’m trying not to be too critical about this years basketball team. This years basketball team is much improved from last year. I expect next year to be even better with the recruits either in waiting or coming in. Do I wish we had better players at this position, etc.? The answer is yes but I believe Coach Gib is building a program.

  18. HALEAKALA March 7, 2014 9:49 am

Hunter sounds like a good name for a quarterback. Sort of like Colt is a good name for a qb.

  19. HALEAKALA March 7, 2014 9:55 am

In a way, Colt’s diagnosis may be a blessing for him. Not only to prevent further injury, but it defines what path he should take in the future. May he be successful in whatever endeavor he chooses.

  20. Duster March 7, 2014 9:56 am

#19, UH had Bob Wagner recruit Hunter Young at QB. Unfortunately, Bob was ousted and Fred von Appen switched to the West Coast offense. I had hopes that Hunter would run the spread option like Michael Carter did and get UH back into a bowl game, UH proceeded to go into the toilet bowl.

  21. Duster March 7, 2014 10:00 am

Sayles does look the part (and Norm seems to like tall WRs), and posted the fastest 40 time at the tryout this year. Is he classified as a freshman? If not, what year is he?

  22. chopsueyboy March 7, 2014 10:04 am

Take care Colt. Sending prayers and best wishes for a full recovery.

  23. gobows March 7, 2014 10:06 am

    18

other than the missouri transfers that are on the bench, who are the other “recruits”?

is gib still waiting for gerry blakes and ronnie stevens?

  24. Derek March 7, 2014 10:17 am

If you ask me, we need a Vincent Smalls type of player, somebody who can stop people from the perimeter.

  25. Duster March 7, 2014 10:20 am

From his video, DeMattei seems to have the football “it”. To me, De La Salle is synonymous with undersized and tough as nails. The last De La Salle walk on we had that I can recall is Justin Clapp, and he fit right in.

  26. PurpleMaple March 7, 2014 10:50 am

Terrance Sayles is 6-2 (Kerens HS,TX/2007). So in the picture, Hunter Hughes looks to be about 5-10/5-11. Maybe they’ll convert him to slot receiver.

  27. Warrior Dave March 7, 2014 11:11 am

Stephen A. Smith I love it!!! He said on his show First Take that he wishes the Hawaii players whacked that UCSB player last night. Guys like Roy Williams and others are praising UH players for showing restrain and for how Hawaii handled the situation. Everyone on Sportscenter say that changes need to be made to prevent fans from coming on the court and interacting with opposing players.

  28. A-House March 7, 2014 11:11 am

    DeMattei:

after looking at the video – wonder why he was not recruited – seems to have speed, quickness, quick decision and reaction to the ball be it on defense or special teams, toughness – “really nose for the ball” type player

notice the closing speed from the deep safety position to tackling the QB about 15 yards behind the LOS

notice how he blocks multiple players on punts and kickoff – stops when the whistle is blown

hope he makes the team and is a frosh or soph

perhaps it was ST’s angle that made Hunter look small next to the 6’2″ Sayles

  29. Ipu Man March 7, 2014 12:01 pm

Congrats to all the walk ons.
    And prayers for Colt.
With God, nothing is impossible, Colt.
Asking Him for every whit whole healing.
    Amen.

  30. sofaking_blk March 7, 2014 12:07 pm

    Best wishes to CB15

  31. BigWave96744 March 7, 2014 12:14 pm

Ok, so we got DeMattei, now waiting on the dude from Mater Dei

  32. Stephen Tsai March 7, 2014 12:15 pm

Hunter is Hughes’ middle name. But that’s the name he goes by.

  33. BigWave96744 March 7, 2014 12:18 pm

    First name “Howard”???

  34. BigWave96744 March 7, 2014 12:27 pm

    Stephen,
Is he Ryan Hughes out of Lumberton HS in Texas

  35. A-House March 7, 2014 12:34 pm

    Colt B:

Aunty Mrs A-house and family sends our best to you and our prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

yep, it’s us who live close to ST and we still remember your comment, “oh, you poor people”

but, that’s OK as ST is an OK neighbor!

  36. A-House March 7, 2014 12:38 pm

    Derek:

yep, Smalls was the “enforcer” for UH back in his playing days

reminded me of the Celtic’s player, was it Don Nelson, who came in to restore “order” during games – believe he became a HC later on

  37. Turfwar March 7, 2014 12:44 pm

Sales looks a lot taller than 6’2″.

  38. Duster March 7, 2014 1:01 pm

BigWave, re. #36, it does look like him, (including the generously listed at 5′ 11″ part). Second team all district QB as a senior in 2010.

  39. bowwar March 7, 2014 1:05 pm

Sorry to hear about Colt’s brain injury…It’s probably best for him to move-on in his life and become successful possibly in coaching or communications.

  40. Stephen Tsai March 7, 2014 1:05 pm

The Leilehua DB who was Maggitt’s backup at Lake High was invited. But he needs to earn an AA. He’s a UH student but still needs AA equivalent

  41. bowwar March 7, 2014 1:07 pm

If Hughes is from Texas, he might turn out to be a diamond in the rough…I remember a Texas QB expressed interest during JJ’s era and went on to play for Iowa and did very well.
Texas QBs may be small, but definitely, game ready…

  42. A-House March 7, 2014 1:08 pm

UH BOR really needs to step up and change, if you must, certain policies that make you appear to be “micro-managers” rather the strategic thinkers/planners.

give the UH President and Chancellors the “authority” to run the UH-system while still retaining the “responsibility” – authority can be delegated, but not responsibility – authority to have the final say in hiring/firing, financial/fiscal, programming/classes to meet your objectives/goals, etc.- state your goals & objectives and give the President a “suspense date” to develop a plan on how to achieve your goals/objectives with specific “short-term{ 3-5 year} – mid-term {5-7 years} – and long-term”{7-10 years} plans – let him/her do a presentation before an open meeting so all interested parties {students; professors; interested residents; business and political leaders} may attend – televise the meeting on Olelo TV so off -Oahu residents can be involved – will some fail? absolutely!!! will some succeed? absolutely!!!

give them a chance to be a “major cog” in the higher education offered by the UH-system to all who choose to attend UH-Manoa, UH-Hilo, UH-West Oahu, and all the community colleges in our State.

YOU are the caretakers of Hawaii’s college education – will you make mistakes/missteps? absolutely!!! but learn from it and don/t repeat it – will you be successful? absolutely!!!

  43. Lowtone123 March 7, 2014 1:20 pm

DeMattei seems to have a good nose for the ball.

  44. Stephen Tsai March 7, 2014 1:24 pm

The coaches seem to think DeMattei is a hard-nosed guy who can play corner or safety. We’ll see.

  45. BigWave96744 March 7, 2014 1:31 pm

When I saw the Red Haired QB, I was reminded of Jason Wheildon.
BTW looks like he’s doing at his family Cement Business in California

  46. BigWave96744 March 7, 2014 1:32 pm

oop Whieldon, not Wheildon…. Forgot my I before E, except after C

  47. Stephen Tsai March 7, 2014 1:38 pm

    I feel for Colt.
Several years ago, I was in a car accident. I had a concussion. I was in ER when the nurse said my father was here to see me. I said: “Father? My father is dead. Am I dead.” It turned out it was my father-in-law. I remember after that I had bad headaches and the light made me ache. I also puked a lot.

  48. Stephen Tsai March 7, 2014 1:39 pm

Let us not forget Whieldon beat Alabama.

  49. BigWave96744 March 7, 2014 1:42 pm

I thought Whieldon was generously listed at 6’1”

  50. BigWave96744 March 7, 2014 1:47 pm

Saddleback produced Whieldon, Colt, Tim Grasso, Aaron Brown, Brett Leonard and Mike Tinoco. Haven’t hit that pipeline recently

  51. BigWave96744 March 7, 2014 1:50 pm

#52, Stephen Rivers still an option?

  52. Andrew March 7, 2014 1:51 pm

    52.

Would be a shame if he picks Texas and ends up not playing.

  53. al March 7, 2014 2:04 pm

this is the stuff that rumors are born from.
not sure of how valid those reports are. some young and eager reporter will try to steal some limelight all the time. remember that guy on hnn who made stuff up and then was reprimanded. the one who changed his surname to sound like he’s local.

  54. al March 7, 2014 2:05 pm

i think louisville could ruled out.

  55. al March 7, 2014 2:14 pm

so that reggie rumor was going to happen anyway.
no wonder siuaki livai was speaking to “advisors” on whether to apply or not.

    curiosity is getting to me if ;
the new principal preselected lee leslie?
how did he know an opening surfaced?
is he being promised a staff position as well?

    if not;

i thought that a rule exists at the doe that if a current faculty, staffer, or other permanent doe employee applied for a coaching position, that person had certain priority hiring opportunities.

  56. Stephen Tsai March 7, 2014 2:24 pm

From what I heard, Lee Leslie was offered the job on Monday night.

  57. kaimiloa March 7, 2014 2:28 pm

58… Coaches: DOE employees get paid more but they don’t get preferential status. Coaches are hired for a season at a time, no guarantees of being selected to coach again. I can see an issue if equally/more qualified individuals got passed over for the regular school job in favor of someone coming in to coach.

  58. J.V.Sr March 7, 2014 2:32 pm

Aloha everyone, hope your all having a pleasant day. Hot, humid and sticky. One day it’s cold, the next day we are in Florida.

Welcome new walk-ons! You worked your tails off and know your hard work has paid off. Congratulations and good luck to you all this season.

Happy Aloha Friday folks, have a blessed weekend.

I’m pulling for J V to do well.

    Aloha.

  60. al March 7, 2014 3:21 pm

60…is it possible to dispute reggie’s record???

  61. tommui March 7, 2014 3:57 pm

It is my understanding you have to be a teacher in order to be a head coach at a high school. He might be hired as a college counselor – which from the newspaper interview might be the case.

It is up to the principal. If he got the right credentials (i.e. the college degrees) which is OK’d by the Personnel people, he is in like Flinn (Flynn?).

I think she is going to have problems – support from the anti-Reggie people and sniping from the Reggie supporters.

If he wins championship the first year, there will be mutterings but no mutiny. Chasing championships won’t count. 🙂

  62. jm2375 March 7, 2014 4:00 pm

There’s a volleyball game tonight, and it’s pouring in Manoa! 😆

  63. lonomakana March 7, 2014 4:22 pm

63… I’m not disputing his record. I’m a fan. I was referring to whatever day job at the school the new guy was hired to do.

    64. You don’t need to have to be employed by the school in order to accept a Head Coaching position. However, coaches who are already employed by the school make about 20% (roughly) more than those who are not. The new guy cannot be hired as a school/college counselor unless he has or is working towards a Masters in School Counseling. My guess is that he was hired as an aide or para-professional who could be assigned to any number of duties.

  64. tommui March 7, 2014 4:25 pm

It would be nice if Mr. Wittek decides to play for Hawaii. I think he has a better chance to play here as a regular than in Texas mopping up.

However, in our anxiety to get the services of Mr. Wittek, we seem to forget about Beau Reilly. He’s been out of football for two years, it is true, but he was a 4-5 star quarterback in high school.

There was another freshman quarterback that we thought would be the Holy Grail but he decided to sit on the bench at USC.

Beau may not be the Holy Grail but it looks like he will be a good one and he has 5 to play 4. Another Colt? Rolo? Moniz? Very possible!

  65. al March 7, 2014 4:49 pm

although we all wish that wittek will want to be a warrior…what will be will be.
at which point i believe that woolsey will lead the warriors.

  66. Truman March 7, 2014 5:56 pm

    tommui,
I thought Beau Reilly was a 2 star qb out of high school? He does look good though.

  67. whitey March 7, 2014 6:23 pm

right now a malaysian airlines plane is missing in southeast asia with 270 people on board. don’t know too much except what i saw on the news. it don’t look good, but right now, the aircraft is completely missing and no one knows it’s location. my prayers to the families of this flight.

  68. Leahi2 March 7, 2014 6:45 pm

When Kahuku’s principal asked for all coaches to turn in heir resignation I guess there immediately was a call for anyone to apply (or reapply) for the job. It surprises me that Lee Leslie out in Idaho gets wind of this. I mean, after all, he is already highly successful where he is. Why would he then want to come to Hawaii? Now the question is “did the new school principal have some prearranged ideas about this”? And did Reggie Torres come up short in some areas?

They say that the new coach was hired on Monday. Well when was she interviewing the new prospects? It seems like there is a lot of hush-hush surrounding this matter. Now its not that it matters with me, it really is none of my business but it is certainly a big surprise. surprise. :Any comments on his?

  69. 3-Prong March 7, 2014 7:04 pm

Gotta serve tough tonight. Let’s Go Bows!

  72. J.V.Sr March 7, 2014 7:59 pm

I’ve always admired and respected the Kahuku program. It’s sometimes can be difficult to accept changes, when it is least expected. Coach Torres is a great coach and friend. He has made an impact on the Kahuku program over the years. He has a passion to coach and I’m sure a program in need of a credible coach will be happy to have him, if he chose too.. Good luck to him and congratulations to the new Kahuku head coach. Kahuku wants there state title back on the North Shore. Anything less is unacceptable. I almost forgot, Mililani and Farrington wants that title too.

  73. 3-Prong March 7, 2014 8:40 pm

  78. cocobean March 7, 2014 10:33 pm

    Kahuku football.

I don’t think RT was passed over because of going 6-5 last year. Siuaki Livai “resigned” just after winning the State Championship in 2005….his fourth in ten years.

Football is a way of life in Kahuku. Most young boys dream of being a Red Raider when they get to high school. Every year the varisty and JV have a combined roster of about 150 players. I really believe the “politics” of playing time, who makes the varsity from JV and style of play can create factions dissatified with one aspect or another.

For every starter there’s at least two backups who’s family feel their boy deserves more playing time. For every player that moves up from JV to Varsiy there’s probably another who’s dream ends. After 10 years of “coaching decisions” I’m sure RT ruffled a lot of feathers so much so the clamor was too loud to ignore.

Siuaki knows what I’m talking about.

  79. al March 7, 2014 10:41 pm

    71…see 58.

  80. J.V.Sr March 7, 2014 10:59 pm

    #62

    Thank you.

Much respect to A-house, a true Rainbow Warrior fan.

Another rainy weekend, stay dry folks. Always blessed to have the ua.

    Aloha.

  81. Truman March 7, 2014 11:05 pm

Reggie Torres mentioned the Moanalua HS vacant job as being interesting. I hope he applies and bring some Kahuku boys over (my kids have attended and is attending MoHS). I thought Arnold Martinez was coming back after a sabatical but I could be wrong. I really liked what he accomplished at the school.

  82. Truman March 7, 2014 11:11 pm

There seems to be a lack of transparency and institutional controls at some public schools with many recent incidents of theft and shenanigans from clerks to principals. So, if Ms. Masaniai at Kahuku wants the public trust she needs to have more transparency with what is happening at the school. It seems like she has done everything legally but she needs to be more transparent. Although if she does this her true reasons for change may not be popular.

  83. JustAsking March 8, 2014 1:42 am

67 & 69: Truman is correct. ESPN rated Beau Reilly as the #178 QB prospect in 2011. Don’t know where the 4-5 star rumor got started. Ratings aren’t everything, but it is not fair to call Reilly a 4-5 star recruit…. that creates some pretty big expectations. And the reference by #67 to the player who chose to “sit on the bench at USC” is beyond stale.

  84. whitey March 8, 2014 8:39 am

    Have a great day Tsaikos.

  85. tommui March 8, 2014 9:42 am

    86 – JustAsking

Sorry that you took offense at my remarks. The point I was trying to make is simply that we were very enthusiastic about a freshman QB coming in – a potential Holy Grail – and we didn’t get him. We are hot about getting a potential transfer – forgetting that another freshman QB is coming in with credentials that maybe better than the one we lost.

  86. A-House March 8, 2014 10:00 am

I believe tom mui made a correct and honest statement about the one who choose to go to USC and “sit on the bench” – speaking metaphorically – don’t know how this will happen as Tuilete does NOT have a football scholarship – only the coaches “preferred walk-on status” which, technically, means doots!

and, the probability is that he will bench warm unless he gets a shot like Mariota, but that’s highly unlikely as SC has too many other more athletically qualified QBs in the “que”

  87. A-House March 8, 2014 10:23 am

I got a bone to pick with UHAD and his comments in the sports page this am.

If, and only if, the OTW contract contained a “drop-dead” clause of signing a new contract, what was to hold Ben Jay to say, on the last day of the current contract which everyone knows that the UHAD accepted/signed, we have received your offer and we would like other interested parties to submit and explain their offer in 3 working days. I am under the impression that UH could NOT negotiate with a competitor during the “contract period” – did the contract also state that UH HAD TO ACCEPT the offer before the drop-dead date?

WHAT WAS THERE TO LOSE?????????? DON’T BELIEVE THIS ACTION WOULD NOT HAVE VIOLATED ANY CONTRACTURAL OBLIGATIONS TO OTW.

    Is there an annulment clause?????????

I am not a Blangeardi (sp) fan, but I believe we, the fans and public, would have liked to know exactly what HHN had to offer — article mentions $28 mil over 5 or 6 years and 100 UH sporting events annually including all football road games for FREE!!!!!

this versus OTW @ $2.3 mil over 6 years =s $13.8 mil VS $28 mil divided by 6 yrs =s $4.6666 mil annually – now, I am no math wiz, but I can see the numbers and cannot understand Jay’s statement about signing the OTW contract in the best interest for UH and it’s students.

pray tell me, what am I missing? am I color blind and tunneled vision?

It has an impact on every person who supports/donates to UH – especially if Ben Jay is making his rounds to solicit $$$

again, UH “colors” the transparency cause we do not know what the OTW contract contains – only the UHAD’s public statements

His style is cramping my attitude toward him and his actions – totally, no match
