Chang expected to be next Jackson State OC

Word on the street is Timmy Chang is expected to be named Jackson State’s next offensive coordinator.

Harold Jackson, the former L.A. Rams receiver, is Jackson State’s head coach. Jackson and June Jones are friends. Chang was Jones’ GA at SMU this past year.

Former UH defensive back John Hardy-Tuliau has decided to go locally — Temucula, Calif., that is — in choosing an agent. Derrick Fox will represent the multi-skilled Hardy-Tuliau. Fox & Grogan’s most notable client is Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith.

Here’s a link to a story on Fox: Fox story

The guy pictured on the left is Mike Pettine; the other guy is Mike Smith. Both posed for the Warrior Beat in 2009. Here’s the significance of the picture:

• As Texas Tech’s defensive coordinator, Greg McMackin worked with graduate assistant Dave Aranda and coached linebacker Mike Smith.

• Mike Smith then played for the Baltimore Ravens under DC Rex Ryan and assistant Mike Pettine.

• In 2009, McMackin, UH’s head coach, hired Smith as a GA working with linebackers.

• For a coaches’ seminar, Smith invited Pettine, then the New York Jets’ defensive coordinator under  Ryan, as a lecturer.

• At the seminar, Pettine worked specifically with Aranda, who was promoted to UH defensive coordinator.

• Three years later, Aranda, then Utah State’s defensive coordinator, worked with linebacker coach Kevin Clune.

Today:

• Dave Aranda is Wisconsin’s defensive coordinator

• Mike Smith is Texas Tech’s co-defensive coordinator

• Kevin Clune is Hawaii’s defensive coordinator

• Mike Pettine is the Cleveland Browns’ head coach

Go Warriors. Went to our UH basketball game in Davis last night; it was an outstanding performance by our team. Only a handful of UH fans–wish there would be more. Come out to their next game tomorrow night in Irvine–UC Irvine is in first place; so our team welcomes needs the vocal support of all fans in the area!

    pls stop these 1, 2, 3’s.

    gee so sorry

  6. jonj January 24, 2014 8:35 am

So Mack still contributing to the game and our program. I wonder how what his whole coaching tree looks like.

  7. haka January 24, 2014 8:36 am

    btw, you were 3 & 4

    Every party has its pooper
    So we invited you
    Party pooper (snap, snap)

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Sounds like Pettine is quite a mentor!

  10. Stephen Tsai January 24, 2014 8:41 am

    I keed. I keed.
    Count.
    Don’t count.
    Lecture.
    Don’t lecture.
All I know is it was cold this morning and I typed my post while wearing a hoodie.

  11. Boolakanaka January 24, 2014 8:47 am

ST–stop crying it was 3 degrees here this morning-lucky you live Hawai’i! Go-bows, no Kani Kauahi (Mr. Palaka, bruddha had quite the collection of palaka pants back in the day) finished at ASU, although he had a long career as a snapper in the NFL.

  12. jm2375 January 24, 2014 8:54 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Best wishes to JHT!

    GO WARRIORS!
Hope to see many more of you at the volleyball game tonight.

Oceanic seems to be taking the weekend off. The Wahine bb game tomorrow and Warrior vb game Sunday will NOT be televised.
(Perhaps they need to hire more staff if they plan to do UH AND hs sports)

  13. Slugger January 24, 2014 8:54 am

    Good morning, gang! Morning, ST!

I’m wearing my sweatshirt this morning. Only 36 outside.

Hurrah for the defense! Hope all those connections help. Four degrees of separation?

    Good luck, John Hardy-Tuliau!

  14. Former UH Athlete January 24, 2014 8:55 am

Going back to yesterday’s news of Poti picking UH over Utah St and Fresno is a nice pickup. It’s always good to beat out conference rivals for recruits.

Poti definitely fills a need for more depth at LB, especially in the middle.

  15. NorthShoreFan January 24, 2014 8:59 am

Guud morning Tsaikos….cold…sunny..for now…but boootiful day

Interesting how many good coaches find some time in Hawaii nei…but we can’t hold on to them…or maybe… “we don’t know what we got…. till it’s gone”…

  16. jonj January 24, 2014 9:01 am

I most definitely think JHT will make someones squad. His special teams play is his key! Has to run a sub 4.5 to have a chance.

  17. NorthShoreFan January 24, 2014 9:02 am

Who determines what games will be shown and if these games were part of the tv deal?
me thinks OTW might be short changing the cable customers.
Are the games not shown part of the pay per view deal?

  18. PurpleMaple January 24, 2014 9:09 am

ST, nice bit of info on the coaching linkages between Mac, Smith, Pettine, Aranda and Clune.

  19. jm2375 January 24, 2014 9:32 am

How do you go from GA to OC in one season??? Nothing against TC, but seems kinda strange.

  20. sofaking_blk January 24, 2014 9:59 am

Congrats to Chang, looks like the R&S is coming to the Dirty South.

  21. bowwar January 24, 2014 10:12 am

No sense in crying over spilt milk…Mac was screwed, so goes the story. We only realize what we lost after it’s gone…Too late.

I wonder what Chow’s UH legacy will be…

I’m hoping our fortunes change soon…At least, the UH basketball teams are doing well. Let’s hope UH baseball has a comeback season too.

    Go Warriors!

  22. bowwar January 24, 2014 10:12 am

In some ways, Chang’s coaching progression seems to be faster than Rolos…

  23. SteveM January 24, 2014 10:28 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Congrats to Timmy Chang!

  24. aaron January 24, 2014 10:40 am

Mack was not “screwed”. Not by UH, anyway. And as for his coaching tree, it has dollar bills for leaves.

  25. d1shima January 24, 2014 10:46 am

    25

  26. ai-eee-soos January 24, 2014 10:48 am

Wishing the best for Timmy Chang.

    … from GA to OC.

    Congratulations.

  27. d1shima January 24, 2014 10:50 am

    Great Morning All!

Best wishes to all who pursue new challenges and opportunities…the coaching career is tenuous and fraught with hills and valleys. You just never know who you’ll meet in one or the other that will lead you to the next step.

  28. st anthony trojan January 24, 2014 10:55 am

me thinks..if i was head coach.. n interested into the r & s offense….what better person to hire then timmy…everything he does would be second nature…experience is in his hip pads…4 yrs under cal lee.. n 5 under jj…young..eager to learn about coaching i presume..n surely he goes there with jj’s blessing..IMUA TIMMY…we see at the end of 2014…how they do…

  29. gobows January 24, 2014 11:06 am

Mack did it to himself, he handcuffed rolo, prevented him from straying away from mouses offense. That would have worked if they had a neil lomax at qb and a good offensive line.

Jm2375 gotta ask chow and wynn the same question. Jackson st is fcs though.

  30. PONO January 24, 2014 11:08 am

Maybe I missed this a while back but when did Harris Ross decommit and go to OSU?

  31. jm2375 January 24, 2014 11:39 am

gobows – #29 – yeah, but Wynn isn’t officially an OC.

  32. ran January 24, 2014 12:32 pm

Great for Timmy. Is he still taking grad classes at SMU as a grad ass’t? Or is he back home?

  33. Former UH Athlete January 24, 2014 12:39 pm

Good news for Timmy Chang. Best of luck to him. I’m little surprised he’s going straight into the OC position from GA. It’s a HUGE step up in responsibility for Timmy.

Jackson St was a good FCS team last season, so it’ll be interesting how Jackson/Chang do as 1st timers implementing their systems.

  34. Former UH Athlete January 24, 2014 12:40 pm

30.. it was a little while ago already. I think I noticed the change back in December, but I don’t know the actual time of the switch.

  35. Bryson January 24, 2014 12:57 pm

How was Mack not screwed? He won a WAC championship which I have no doubt in my mind helped in talks with the MWC…He was apart of the 3 WAC titles Hawaii won 2 as a D-Co 1 as HC…He still has a better record than our current HC…

  36. st anthony trojan January 24, 2014 12:59 pm

if jackson st.. has a decent defense..they will do good for the most part.. we all know that r & s will light up the scoreboard…n with a decent …defensethat scoreboard will be light up over n over on one side ..hopefully for them…wish them well….

  37. HALEAKALA January 24, 2014 12:59 pm

Connections are important. That’s why don’t talk stink about anyone. You never know what might happen in the future.

  38. Darren January 24, 2014 1:03 pm

    30. re: Harris Ross, 10/16/2013…the day the Beavs offered him. Hope they stay away from our other recruits.

    http://www.ibabuzz.com/prepcorner/2013/10/16/pittsburg-rb-harris-ross-changes-college-plans/

  39. PONO January 24, 2014 1:11 pm

I guess Ross was using us as a placeholder until on of the BCS schools came knocking.

  40. st anthony trojan January 24, 2014 1:17 pm

yea pono…seems like ur right… no hu hu.. akua sabe…

  41. jonj January 24, 2014 1:50 pm

35 Mack won 1 championship in 4 yrs and June Jones won 2 in 9yrs. I too also think he was screwed! But its all over n done wit now. Mack in his worst season will prob win the same as chow in 3.

  42. bowwar January 24, 2014 1:53 pm

As a consolation, we’ve got the Riggins kid and he’s supposedly very good at RB. Harris Ross indicated that he’d flip if OSU came around and offered.

  43. PurpleMaple January 24, 2014 2:00 pm

Wishing good luck to Timmy. Jackson, Mississippi will be a huge cultural adjustment for him. But I think he will have fun.

  44. bowwar January 24, 2014 2:13 pm

When is the kid from Utah, Ursa?, returning from his mormon mission…I would think he will be in the mix for RB or WR…

  45. primo123 January 24, 2014 2:18 pm

    45

  46. primo123 January 24, 2014 2:19 pm

    46. is it true then, its all about WHO you know, rather than WHAT you know?

  47. primo123 January 24, 2014 2:21 pm

41 Mack won with JJ’s recruits. Chow’s losing with Mack’s. Lets see how Chow does with Chow’s recruits. Then we talk again.

  48. Bryson January 24, 2014 2:40 pm

Actually Mack won with a combination of JJ and His Recruits…Chow has been playing his recruits SS,TG,Lakalaka,Kirkwood,Kemp,Moleni, and thats just on the offensive side

  49. wafan January 24, 2014 3:39 pm

    Good evening!

  50. wafan January 24, 2014 3:40 pm

    50!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  51. Fan January 24, 2014 3:41 pm

I hope we get new uniforms this year. In my 25 years as a fan I think the current unis are the worst. It’s no surprise the retro unis were worn twice last year. New unis would be a nice way to give a feeling of having turned the corner from hard times.

  52. Boolakanaka January 24, 2014 3:41 pm

Ursua, I thought is getting in this coming fall. The family is from the Big Island, his pops is, Larrio, is my childhood friend and HS classmate.

  53. Truman January 24, 2014 3:53 pm

It’s too bad about the Harris de-commit. Of all the Hawaii recruits so far, he was the only one on Scout’s top 150 for the West.

  54. dead horse January 24, 2014 4:00 pm

    stop beating on me.

McMackin. Uniforms. round and round you all go.

  55. Fan January 24, 2014 4:35 pm

54….guess it’s the off season and not too many live horses

  56. Truman January 24, 2014 5:24 pm

Anybody know which recruits are visiting this weekend?

  57. jeezy33 January 24, 2014 5:33 pm

    56. none i think… saving for next weekend … Maybe some locals might be visiting this weekend.

  58. amadeus January 24, 2014 5:58 pm

Harris Ross might not qualify per Beaver Blitz.

  59. jeezy33 January 24, 2014 6:05 pm

    58. Ouch… Real talented kid…

  60. jonj January 24, 2014 6:07 pm

47 primo. Mack wasn’t allowed to try win with his recruits! Always saying the same thing chow losing with Mack recruits. But Mack recruits the only bright spots on the team!

  61. jonj January 24, 2014 6:09 pm

N when the next coach comes in and starts winning its gonna be “new coach winning with chows recruits”. It all boils down to coaching! Chow had some very winnable games this past year where he was out coached!

  62. jonj January 24, 2014 6:11 pm

Yo jeezy who u think the big boy in the pic was this past weekend??

  63. jeezy33 January 24, 2014 6:17 pm

    60. Macks recruits are going to be the bright spot most likely because they are older and more mature. I would think some of the guys like JGW, Benny Fonua, Nequan Phillips, Marrell Jackson, Trayvon Henderson, Keith Kirkwood, and so on will be better than most of the seniors this past year.

I listened to a interview with Colorado St. coach and he said you cannot afford to have 10 busts in a recruiting class. Busts can be guys not qualifying, transferring out, etc. I’m thinking Hawaii was lucky to find 10 solid players period per recruiting class. Depth wise, we just weren’t recruiting enough talented players per class like Beau Yaps, Moses Samias, and Mike Edwards. Our WRs weren’t talented enough. We recruited slow O linemen. Defensively, we didn’t recruit good enough LBs or pass rushers to hang with the MWC competition.

This is year 3 so we will see how far Coach Chows recruits have come along. It is unfortunate we probably wont be bringing in a QB who can compete immediately. Just hope Woolsey develops and we draw up some packages for him to succeed.

  64. ALLAN January 24, 2014 6:37 pm

…AND JJ WON WITH *WHA HAPPENED?*’S RECRUITS…ONLY ASAP!! SO, IMPLICATIONS THERE.

  65. Slugger January 24, 2014 6:49 pm

    Congratulations to Timmy Chang!

  66. Truman January 24, 2014 6:50 pm

    57. Thanks jeezy.

  67. dead horse January 24, 2014 7:43 pm

jonj-u special needs? If not I apologize to all special needs people all over the creation.

  68. dead horse January 24, 2014 7:44 pm

Jonj so u remember easily the big guy you asking about, his name is Mack McMackin.

  69. 3-Prong January 24, 2014 8:26 pm

On cruise control at the Stanley. 2-0 and leading in the third. Let’s Go Bow’s!

  70. 3-Prong January 24, 2014 8:27 pm

  73. Warrior Dave January 24, 2014 8:45 pm

#71, was Jackson a prior commit?

    Jeezy, do you know?

  74. jeezy33 January 24, 2014 9:14 pm

committed yesterday… it was discussed by i think in yesterdays blog

  75. Warrior Dave January 24, 2014 9:20 pm

    Thanks Jeezy.

  76. wafan January 25, 2014 3:57 am
