After that, it’s more Florida, then New Orleans.
For head coach Norm Chow and his assistants, this week’s recruiting tour will be spent on home visits. Depending on several factors — qualifications, late losses, gray shirts — the Rainbow Warriors probably have about six scholarships left to give. Not all of the offers have to be made before the Feb. 5 signing day. Some cap room might be needed for transfers or late qualifiers. There have been several calls from “returners” — Hawaii-raised players who went to mainland schools and now want to transfer to UH.
The next two weeks are going to be very interesting.

The latest tally shows there are 415 people who submitted official applications for the two vacant UH coaching jobs.
That’s very interesting. Hope it works out for the team.

I remember in JJ’s first year, he made a one-day trip to Texas to recruit an offensive lineman who eventually signed with Kansas or Kansas State. After that, I don’t recall JJ or McMackin making mainland recruiting trips this late.

I don’t think chow should be thinking future with the returners wanting to come home. Each should have to walk on with the first year they have to sit out. Unless they graduated and can play immediately. ST I think I heard that last years transfers count against this class, is that true??

23. Oregon St…?? That used to be our biggest worry…. Now we play 2nd option to the Utah St. and Fresno St. of the world and gotta worry about those teams. Utah St. class is very small so far so they have a bunch of offers left and with Clune coming to Hawaii, you know they will be lurking the Hawaii recruiting board… But yeah Oregon St always going to be a worry locally… But I would say Utah St. is a bigger problem currently as a whole..

I don’t think I would be worrying too much about Cal. They have high entrance requirements, so you need one smart buggah to go to Cal or Stanford.
And I don’t think Utah State will make much inroads unless they are Mormon. I would worry more about Pac-12 raiding.

Quality of athletes/recruits is our biggest concern and that’s the candidates that the Oregon States try to poach. We might lose some two stars to Utah State, but I’m not worried about that…
Interesting that they’re making a stop in New Orleans…I wonder what they’re looking for there…
Seems like Washington State is getting the most local guys, lately.
Some of the local boys get lolo eyes when recruited by Pac-12 schools, but you really want to go to Utah State if you go there because Hawaii is in the same conference and it is not BCS.
25… maybe. The only the ILH players might get poached. Cal Berkeley is a high academic school, so tougher to get players admitted and there probably isn’t enough D1 talent coming out of ILH every year to make it worth their while to spend recruiting time in Hawaii. Guys like Te’o will go to a Stanford/Notre Dame.
There’s enough high academic high schools in Cali for them to fill the roster without needing to come to Hawaii… although recruiting hasn’t been good there for several years.
The bigger key to UH’s recruiting is that we already have most of the spots accounted for already. Lots of commits early means the coaches are getting the players they want.
At this point, I’d much rather have 16-20 commits of primary targets and lose a few late, rather than have less than 10 committed and scrambling to fill your allotment with 2nd/3rd level targets.
They’re probably stopping at New Orleans to meet with Russell Gage, ATH, Baton Rouge, LA and Dalvin Populist, QB/DB, Slidell, LA.
34-FUHA, I see your point, but if I recall current TB Buc, Matthew Masifilo, Stanford Dlineman, is a Campbell HS graduate. I also understand the Cardinal are looking at a couple Kapolei and Campbell underclassmen. And Cal, from back in my day, recruited my pop warner teammate John Haina, to Joe Iber to Tyson Alualu–and a couple in-between. For me, given the choice between Stanford and ND, Stanford hands down is a much better school.
30. People don’t even realize that Utah St. is raiding Hawaii’s boards bad. I’m not going to name the commit who was high on Hawaii till they came in and Lauaki visited Utah St. too even though I think he is still a Hawaii commit. After knowing Poti is possibly committing to Hawaii, guarantee Utah St. tries even harder to get him knowing Clune is a LB coach and are going to be keeping tabs on who we target.
#38 – Jeezy, if USU is poaching our Board, I’m surprised they haven’t tried to recruit the prize RB recruit out of Kahala High School, Mahu Okole, who is 6’3″, 225 lbs and runs a 4.3 40…They must have missed the game where he/she scored 7 TDs against Punahou.
Don’t worry, our secret is secure, ’cause I don’t think they goin’ steal Mahu Okole from us…I’m sure Chow has shim in the bag.
Bowwar: Heard that Mahu’s younger brother, Lolo, is a 6.1 200 rb 8th grader on the intermediate team at Kukui High. Bugga ran for 6 touchdowns against Kamehameha and threw for 2 more.

Why all this talk of Utah State and Fresno “poaching” players? Last year, USU had only 3 Hawaii players and Fresno only 1. If that’s recruiting The state hard, theyre not doing a very good job.

leron…what jeezy is saying is that utah st. and fresno st. have been coming after kids who have comitted to or shown high interest in our program. these are not hawaii kids only that he is referencing but recruits in general.
54. Thanks for clarifying. For example, Simon Poti is from California and looks very close to committing….. But now Utah St entering the picture… Samiuela Lauaki is a Hawaii commit and visited Utah St. I think we are still good on him though. Another big time JC kid ended up signing with Utah St. when Hawaii was the 1st on him. There will be more with Clune here. The last 2 weeks get crazy with coaches trying to fill out a recruiting class and our commits usually get full court pressed.
Darrian Josey is visiting Syracuse this weekend. Possibly Louisville the next. Yeah he is a commit but nothing is 100% at this point.
Oregon St has about 21 commits right now. I wouldn’t be worried about them as much as I would be worried about better Pac 12 schools poaching Oregon St recruits…
And like I said, I am more worried about the better MWC teams hitting up our boards. SDSU class is looking really good.

But I just don’t get how anyone could choose Utah State over Hawaii. The Aggies have a good football program, excellent facilities and a nice little campus. But c’mon, Logan, Utah, over Manoa? That I don’t get.

Sorry Jeezy. I misunderstood your post. Good recruits or no, there will be many 2nd and 3rd year recruits under this staff who have had playing time and on the job training with mixed results. Hopefully this is the year all the experience and growing pains pay off.

Heard Lamone Williams from Kahuku committed to OSU Beavs last night.
Just for the record, Cal under Ted Telford invoked the privilege that allows athletes to gain aceeptance to Cal below the normal entrance requirements. This is not a unique situation. For sure many other schools utilize the same privilege in many conferences. You have to have an ACT near 30 to gain entry to Illinois….for sure a number of athletes do not meet the student profile…..just FYI.

65–I serve on a couple of admission committees at the institution I’m at, and for athletes here, a baseline of 1900-1950, is mandatory for admission, otherwise they are required to do a 5th HS year at a prep school.
Why are none of the Hawaii men’s basketball road conference games on television?
70… because UH plays in a broke ass conference that no TV network will pickup. Pretty sure a TV network isn’t going to carry games with less than 1,000 people in the stands (at most BW gyms) and maybe a few thousand that would watch from home.
You can view most of the games on the bigwest.tv website (hawaiiathletics website usually has a link to stats, audio, video). The only issue is bigwest’s website seems to have poor bandwidth and any more than 3 people viewing bogs down the feed.
