Gant to play in NFLPA bowl

Coach Norm Chow said wide receiver Chris Gant has been invited to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

The game will be played Saturday, Jan. 18, at the StubHub Center at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif.

Former NFL head coaches Dennis Green and Dick Vermeil will be coaching in the all-star game.

Guud Morning Tsaikos…my toes are cold…

tmui, inre last nights wbb, yes a “soft press” would have made them start the clock but the foul was more critical. If that had not occurred then we would have had possession and possibly be shooting free throws as they would have fouled at the inbound.
take the ball to the other end and game over.

  8. Andrew January 9, 2014 9:37 am

The only unfortunate thing about Gant was that he was a senior this past year already. Would have been great if he was just a freshman and we had him for another three seasons.

    Congrats to Gant!

For the sake of comparison between Aranda and Clune as far as getting a chance to be a DC at Hawaii:

Dave Aranda resume before becoming the DC at Hawaii:

    1996-1998 California Lutheran (Grad Assistant)
    1999-2001 Texas Tech (Grad Assistant)
    2002-2003 Houston (LB’s)
    2005-2006 California Lutheran (Defensive Coordinator/LBs)
    2007 Southern Utah (Defensive Coordinator)
    2008 Hawaii (Defense Line)
    2008-2009 Hawaii (Defensive Coordinator)

Kevin Clune resume before becoming the DC at Hawaii

    1991 Palma (Calif.) HS – Defensive Line/Receivers
1994-95 Dos Pueblos (Calif.) HS – Linebackers
    1997-99 Fullerton JC – Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers
2000 Occidental College – Defensive Line
    2001-02 Utah – Graduate Assistant
2003-04 Southern Utah – Defensive Coordinator
2005-08 Weber State – Defensive Coordinator
    2009-13 Utah State – Linebackers
    2014 Hawaii- Defensive Coordinator

Both have experience as Defensive Coordinator, LB’s and DL.

  27. Bulla January 9, 2014 12:27 pm

    good comparison,

as i said earlier, my time with coach clune when he was at weber state with coach ron mcbride was always upbeat. there were a lot of hawaii players there at that time and they all did well. clune was a straight shooter, they won the big sky division and then he left to coach at utah state thereafter, a good move for him, bad for coach mcbride.

exciting times for the warriors, going to look for the good and the positive things all around and zero in on the potential each of our players have….. IMUA WARRIORS

  28. al January 9, 2014 12:36 pm

    bumbulla,
nice to see you out here lately.

my first thoughts after hearing of the clune hiring was, We better go ask the beast and papa beast about this guy. not to mention the higgins’ men. zach, cameron, and papa jim.

  29. Ipu Man January 9, 2014 12:38 pm

Wonder how the pro bowl will turn out?
Will the players play with a will to win?
Will the top players be available?
I think it will resemble flag football more than before…

  30. al January 9, 2014 12:42 pm

wishful thinking…clune brings in old buddy, chad kauha’aha’a. I think he makes too much at Wisconsin.

  31. Stephen Tsai January 9, 2014 1:00 pm

I’ve spoken with Clune once, for about 15 minutes, on the phone.
Very nice guy, sharp, and very upbeat about wanting to get the defense going.

  32. Stephen Tsai January 9, 2014 1:01 pm

    Re: Pro Bowl
    I like flag football.
The NBA all-star game is a fun event. I think people want to see their football heroes in person. The Pro Bowl is about entertainment. It’s not life or death.

  33. boolakanaka January 9, 2014 1:02 pm

Some interesting other college football news: one, Lane Kiffin talking to Saban about being the OC at Bama; and two, Bobby Pertinos new buyout clause at Louisville–a whooping $10,000,000.

  34. Stephen Tsai January 9, 2014 1:04 pm

    Re: Kiffin
I always thought it was better to go from head coaching to the broadcast booth.

  35. bowwar January 9, 2014 1:06 pm

I believe JHT is a good player, but not quite NFL caliber particularly with speed and able to diagnose plays. I believe JHT would make an excellent arena football player due to his versatility if he so choses. Canadian football also is a possibility. In many ways, JHT is like Soloman Eliminian who is doing well in Canada, but having a hard time being picked-up by the NFL due to his measurables. (i.e. speed and size)

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid January 9, 2014 1:08 pm

Good for Gant! Best of luck to him.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  37. bowwar January 9, 2014 1:09 pm

I think Lane Kiffen would be good for the broadcast booth. As a coach, he was far overrated.

I believe this is Petrinos second go-around at Louisville, that’s why they have the huge exit clause.

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid January 9, 2014 1:11 pm

    al –

I hope you’re not calling my friend bulla a bum! nah nah! πŸ™‚

  39. bowwar January 9, 2014 1:12 pm

I believe Kirkwood will be a NFL first round draft pick once he reaches his Senior year as long as he continues to improve and avoid injuries. He has the potential to be far better than Lelie or any other past UH receiver. (e.g. Walter Murray)

  40. Warrior Dave January 9, 2014 1:12 pm

How’s it Bulla!!! Hope you and the Ohana doing good. Have a blessed 2014!

  41. Stephen Tsai January 9, 2014 1:12 pm

Which brings me to another topic: Excluding current broadcasters, whom do you think would make a good color analyst for local football telecasts/broadcasts?

  42. Stephen Tsai January 9, 2014 1:12 pm

And maybe Bulla could be the answer to No. 41. I heard him on the radio yesterday afternoon.

  43. Warrior Dave January 9, 2014 1:15 pm

Can’t believe Kiffin talking to Saban about his OC Coordinator position. Wasn’t Kiffin and Chow Co-Offensive Coordinators? That’s why Chow finally left as Kiffin was getting or trying to get more of the credit???

  44. boolakanaka January 9, 2014 1:21 pm

39–Saying that Kirkwood has the potential to be better than Sweetpea (W. Murray) in the pros, is a fairly low measuring stick, as he developed a pronounced case of crocodile arms in the NFL, coupled that he already had a reputation of being less than fond with physical contact.

Ashley on the other hand, had a reasonably solid pro career of seven seasons, and for a couple of seasons was near the top of YPC. His knocks were centered around contract disputes, and not wanting to make catches in the center of the field. (which is true of about 80% of NFL receivers)

  45. boolakanaka January 9, 2014 1:23 pm

41–my vote would be solidly placed to Mel Cabang.

  46. jeezy33 January 9, 2014 1:24 pm

I don’t think JHT has the speed to play in the NFL. Maybe a arena league type guy…

  47. ai-eee-soos January 9, 2014 1:30 pm

    surprised ? – nah …

University of North Carolina — research that showed between 8% and 10% of the school’s

football and basketball players are reading below a third-grade level.

    from CNN …

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/09/us/ncaa-athletes-unc-response/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

  48. boolakanaka January 9, 2014 1:34 pm

46–Jeezy, I agree. While he has nice quick twitch, his range at his idea position FS, did not seem to be on the level with NFL standards. Also a bit small at 180 pounds, and from the 3-4 games I watched, more times than not, did not great angles on long plays.

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid January 9, 2014 1:36 pm

#41 – There’s this one sportswriter dude – not sure of his name – Steve… Steve something… oh yeah – Stephen Tsai! Him! Seen him on TV and he comes across as the real deal. He should do color. That other fella bulla might work too!

And if the other boola – boolakanka was in town for good, he’d be a solid choice. Well spoken, knows a lot about UH and local athletics and best of all, he buys the beer if you hang out with him.

  50. jm2375 January 9, 2014 1:45 pm

    DPK – #49 – πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

  51. Pete Jek January 9, 2014 1:46 pm

#41, Rich Miano. Robert Kekaula is a better color than play-by-play guy. Kanoa Leahey/Kekaula would be a good broadcasting pair.

  52. boolakanaka January 9, 2014 1:49 pm

49-DPK…you are a funny guy. The only redeeming quality I would bring to such a position would be I would be very diligent about keeping the broadcast booth, stoked with many delightful beverages. Which I am sure violate a variety of journalism standards and Hawai’i laws…

  53. bowwar January 9, 2014 1:50 pm

#45: I agree, Cabang would make a good color man albeit, he’s getting a bit old. I like Liz Chun as a potential color person…Female perspective, good looks, but tough…

  54. bowwar January 9, 2014 1:51 pm

We can always bring back Rick Blangiardi, who I thought was a great color guy back when with papa Leahi.

  55. bowwar January 9, 2014 1:52 pm

#48 and Jeezy, JHT is a nice kid, but his reaction time and speed was poor in the secondary. Arena football is made for him, as he can play both offense and defense in a small field.

  56. bowwar January 9, 2014 1:54 pm

#44: Gotta admit Kirkwood has the potential…Has good speed and height, which is what the NFL is looking for. I like his separation on deep passes and ability to make the tough catch.

  57. boolakanaka January 9, 2014 1:56 pm

53–I remember back in the the day, Mel came to my local HS to do a lunchtime program, bruddha dropped so many f-bombs. I saw the principal out of the corner of my eye, and to my great surprise, he was bent over and about 3 seconds from p-p the pants, tears coming down his cheeks as laughter overwhelmed him. That would have never occurred in our charged PC climate….How great to have Mel as your cellmate at Halawa???

  58. boolakanaka January 9, 2014 1:58 pm

56–Mos def. From the games I watched, he showed overt talent at times. Just needs to get in the weight-room, add a solid 10-15, and get consistent.

  59. Da Punchbowl Kid January 9, 2014 2:00 pm

kifi is also very colorful. Can’t forget da kifi!

Is last seasons color analyst gone?

Hmmm… ST or Bulla for football telecast/broadcast?
Tough choice… Bulla has the face for radio and ST has the voice for TV… πŸ™„

Actually, either would be good… lots of insight and knowledge there.

DPK — I sat with kifi during a TV-gate a few years ago. He didn’t say much but when he did and told me what to look for, it opened another dimension. It was mostly making me focus inside the box–watching where he said and not following the quarterback and the ball at the snap. The success or failure of the play was predictable by watching where he said.

During all the dive plays last season, I was wondering what he would say…

The quiet shame of college athletics. “Quiet” but tis no secret. 99.9% of America looks away cause the main thing is that they ask β€œis it Saturday yet?”.

A solution to the problem could be stricter guidlines for academic entry into universities and holding admissions and compliance offices more accountable, but FACT is that gets in the way of developing 40 times and benchpress marks which are the real priorities of the majority.

    People shouldn’t pretend it isn’t.

  63. cocobean January 9, 2014 2:33 pm

I thought Darnell Arceneaux was a natural on camera. Articulate and knowledgeable. He would have been a success in sports broadcasting had he chosen to persue a career in that field rather than in coaching.

  64. aaron January 9, 2014 2:48 pm

I’m sure he doesn’t have the football chops to be successful, but I think Frank B. Shaner would be great on TV.

  65. cocobean January 9, 2014 2:55 pm

Wahine BB. Talk about losing confidence as a team. The last 10minutes and in overtime seemed no one wanted to make a play. It appeared as if everyone was going through the motions waiting for someone else to step up. It wasn’t a smart foul at the end and the time keeper got it right when he started the clock.

Had a wierd thought while watching the game. Thought if Norm Chow was here and was introduced ….what kind of reception would he recieve. Know I’d clap but thought what would other people do.

Wish he’ll up at a Men’s or Women’s BB game just to see the kind of reception he’d recieve.

  66. NorthShoreFan January 9, 2014 3:06 pm

Major League Baseball has the minor leagues.
National Basketball Association has the minor leagues
National Football League has the NCAA..

Damn apparently Colt Brennan was a passenger in an SUV that collided head-on with a sedan on Friday evening. According to Brennan’s father, the former quarterback has three or four broken ribs, a broken left collarbone and head injuries. He’s in stable condition now.

OK, more Duane Akina gossip–UGeorgia is now the suitor of his employment. Disclosure, I cannot vouch for the veracity of any of the little birds telling me this information.

  127. A-House January 10, 2014 7:51 am

Should we continue to “gossip” about the future of Duane Akina? He is bound to find employment with a BCS school on the mainland. UH has a DC and I don’t think DA will accept a LB position at UH -could be wrong, but have not heard any “feelers” his way or vice versa.

Unlike Ken Nuimatalolo who will be Hawaii bound when his current contract with Navy ends.

If so, hope his All-District/Metro son, 6’2′ 220# LB follows his parents home and becomes a Warrior – class of 2016. Currently, a sophomore.

Oh, my FYI post was not meant as a hope that Duane is still available or even open to coming here (which I hear would not be the case), but rather just following-up on local boy.

  129. kakaako kid January 10, 2014 8:34 am

We’re going to the Sugar Bowl!!!!! Oops, my bad.
