Fonua: “I’m not leaving”

Dispelling Internet rumors, linebacker Benneton “Benny” Fonua said he has no plans to transfer from the Rainbow Warrior football program.

“I’m not leaving,” Fonua said. “I’m staying.”

Fonua added he has “no idea” how such talk originated.

Fonua, who is one of the top special-team players, is expected to have an expanded role at linebacker this coming season.

heck of a bb game last night – I was sure that UH would lose, but they fought and came through when it counted most – Omaha is a very good basketball team!

  14. A-House January 4, 2014 10:03 am

at breakfast this morning, Midori asked why Scott Harding is not being considered for AA honors as a punter with his stellar record

Did he make All-MWC as a punter? He punted a lot and very few were returned for very small yardage.

What criteria is used for a punter for season honors? How well did he stack up?

  15. A-House January 4, 2014 10:04 am

our in-house bowl games are tightening up with wins separating the 4 of us – Mrs A-House leads the pack with 18 winners!

  17. A-House January 4, 2014 10:10 am

not surprised that Vandy is doing well as they played tough the whole season

surprised how well Oklahoma did against Alabama – Oklahoma QB, IMHO, is much better than AJ who often panics when pressured and throws the ball all over the place or eats it for big losses

I picked Auburn over Florida State because they have so many offensive and defensive weapons unlike Florida whose entire offense is on their QB – if he gets hurt early on, it will be a lopsided loss!!!!!!!!!!

Aloha all! Pivoting of his win over Bama, Stoops interviewing with the Browns this week. Some say, he is their top candidate…

  21. bowwar January 4, 2014 10:19 am

It was a good BB game last night…A sketchy win for UH considering the foul and Technical that made up the point differential at the end. It was correct calls, but I’m sure Nebraska-Omaha feels like they got jobbed…
We’ll face the same type of officiating on the mainland, so the shoe will be on the other foot. We will have to BEAT the opponents by 10 points or better if we expect to win games there. I thought that Christian had two basically bad games during this homestand…Hopefully, that will need to improve as we enter league play.

Good for the BB team to get our minds off the dismal football situation…We needed this…

  22. bowwar January 4, 2014 10:25 am

Mahalo Benny for staying with the Home Team!!!

    #24 …
Follow up to the Paul Johnson gossip …

Georgia Tech: In response to a report that surfaced within the hour, Paul Johnson, via text to CoachingSearch, states,

“I have no idea what he is talking about and I’m looking forward to next season. All these anonymous sources are unbelievable.”

  27. bowwar January 4, 2014 12:48 pm

24: Wouldn’t mind if Paul Johnson wanted to come back and coach in Hawaii again…He’s a consistent winner.

  28. bowwar January 4, 2014 12:49 pm

On another note, when is BJ extending Gib’s contract. I hope he’s not stupid and we end up losing Gib like we did with JJ.

  29. nana January 4, 2014 1:00 pm

ST, is Afonga Wiley also staying with the Warriors?

  30. Former UH Athlete January 4, 2014 1:03 pm

Good news about Fonua. He’s definitely in the mix for Daley’s vacated starting spot, plus with Miller leaving, that’s less competition for Fonua.

bowwar…. I’m think the same thing. Gib needs to be extended and an expensive buyout clause needs to be attached because its a matter of time before a big school starts noticing the progress and recruiting Gib has been making. I still think Gib needs one more very good season on top of this one before somebody tries to take him. Looking at the returning roster and who’s becoming eligible, there’s a high probability that UH will be even better next year.

Went to the BB game last night and Gib has really progressed as a coach this year. Much better execution on set plays and out of timeouts. TO usage has been spot on most games.

UH gutted out a solid win even while shooting terrible from deep and Standhardinger was neutralized by Omaha’s bigs for the most part. Fotu had a monster game and is completely unguardable 1on1 at the mid post or low block.

  31. Shadow January 4, 2014 1:59 pm

    “Talked to Fonua & his mom & they’re not happy . . . ” “Chow’s locker room is crumbling . . .” “Ben Yee is huhu w/ Chow . . .”

These negative bloggers got zero credibility & contribute absolutely nothing to make our state’s football program any better.

  32. Warrior Dave January 4, 2014 2:24 pm

    #21 Bowar,

I don’t agree that Christian had two bad games this last homestsnd. He was the high scorer on Monday and shot for a good percentage.

I love the team this year. Shows what good chemistry can do and the positive results it brings. They are very competitive as the shoving/shouting match between Shamburger and Christen showed. But the TEAM talked it out and there was no visable residue this week.

Stayed home sick but was able watch it on TV. What a gutty win to come back from 9 down late.

  33. Sofaking_blk January 4, 2014 2:29 pm

You see that Colts fumble bounces off Samson Satele.

  34. Warrior Dave January 4, 2014 2:29 pm

    #31 Shadow,

There’s a difference between what someone may tell ST verses what is being FELT or said by the individual behind he scenes. If you read carefully what Ben told ST, there is something amiss. I stand by my comments what I said regarding Ben Yee.

  35. kapakahi January 4, 2014 2:31 pm

Hopefully Benny will see more PT on defense…..and not just on special teams…..next season.

  36. al January 4, 2014 2:40 pm

ahouse…i knew all along last night that we’d come from behind. you could see the signs as soon as omaha for their biggest lead.

their legs started going which meant rebounding and shooting would get to normalcy or worse.

    …and this crowd is vocal.

  37. al January 4, 2014 2:41 pm

yes, rumors can run rampant. it is why i only depend on little birdies.

  38. jeezy33 January 4, 2014 3:08 pm

I still believe the poster on here that Fonua wasn’t very happy this past season. But there probably arent very many better options at this point.

soph – junior season should be the year to make the biggest jump so hopefully Fonua works on staying at a good weight so he can play fast this coming year.

  39. Puuwai January 4, 2014 3:10 pm

Glad to hear of Mr. Fonua’s denial in leaving the program due to lolo rumors.

    Imua Rainbow Warriors!!!

  40. bowwar January 4, 2014 3:15 pm

I believe Fonua has a red-shirt year since he played as a true freshman, so this would be the best time if he’s considering a move to another school. I hope he stays, but I wouldn’t blame the kid for leaving if he’s not happy.

  41. Inyoface January 4, 2014 3:37 pm

That was a great comeback by the Colts.

  42. Haleakala January 4, 2014 4:14 pm

“Benny has no idea how such talk originated.”

    Good news!

But There should be a system to track and find the original posters of these untrue and poisonous rumors and lock them in a dirty Sanitoi for a week.,

  43. bulavinaka January 4, 2014 4:31 pm

Heard the news midway through the season from some of the linebackers saying it came directly from the horses mouth due to the fact he wasn’t getting enough playing time. If the rumor came directly from the locker room than someone is in denial. Sometimes its good to zip it and keep things to yourself before it spreads like wild fire. I would believe the players more than ST because they are in the locker room which is off limits to the media.

  44. UHfan808 January 4, 2014 4:51 pm

    Good early evening, Tsai-kos and Lurk-ers! 🙂

  45. UHfan808 January 4, 2014 4:52 pm

  46. UHfan808 January 4, 2014 4:54 pm

Straight from the birdies in da know is certainly the best option!

If not and until then? I no believe! Hahaha

  47. Inyoface January 4, 2014 5:07 pm

Its easy to start rumors in todays world.

  48. turfwar January 4, 2014 5:15 pm

Plus 1 shadow. Not only do they not contribute those negative posters are a detriment. Even if a player is unhappy because of playing time or whatever and are telling their peers they are leaving there are still many things that have be considered before actually transferring. It’s never as simple as “I’m unhappy so I’m leaving”. In every if not most cases they know exactly why they aren’t playing. Now they have to convince they’re parents that’s it’s the best thing to do and then convince other schools that a player from a losing team isn’t playing but they really are worthy of a scholarship at another program. really? Then they have to be sure they have better opportunities elsewhere. It’s not that easy. And in the end it could just be a disgruntled player looking for a consoling ear. I mean even starters have complaints and need to let off some steam. Drama queens making way too much of everyday locker talk.

  49. el burro sabio January 4, 2014 5:32 pm

    All could be true.
Benny could have been unhappy with his PT.
Benny could have said during the season he would transfer.
Benny could have thought about it and decided to stay.
What is important for Benny is what he wants to do now, regardless of what that is, and regardless of what someone else hopes that he will do now.

  50. Slugger January 4, 2014 5:34 pm

Glad to hear that Benny Fonua will be back.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  51. momo January 4, 2014 6:00 pm

Good news about Benny Fonua! I hope that he stays, has a great season, and he gets to experience many wins next season. I would be not be surprised if he was unhappy last season…how many players would be happy if they weren’t getting much playing time on a team that lost it first 11 games? Would it be better to have a player happy with losing or better to have a player who feels that he can help the team?

By the way, this is Garret and not momo. I am at momo’s house on vacation with my wife and kids. We leave tomorrow but I’m happy to have a chance to post now.

I hate that I have been off the blog for so long. I warned for months before I left that I was going to start a job that would keep me from the blog…7 trips to DC in 3 months, long days spent at work in a room with no internet access and no phone, etc., make it impossible for me to blog.

  52. momo January 4, 2014 6:15 pm

“at breakfast this morning, Midori asked why Scott Harding is not being considered for AA honors as a punter with his stellar record

Did he make All-MWC as a punter? He punted a lot and very few were returned for very small yardage.

What criteria is used for a punter for season honors? How well did he stack up?”

    A-House,

Ben Skaer from New Mexico was the first team All-MWC punter. Nevada’s punter was the second team All-MWC punter.

    Skaer: 45.8 yards per punt
Tenpenny (Nevada): 44.5 yards per punt
Harding: 40.2 yards per punt (8th in the MWC)

I don’t know what the stats were for last season, but I know that the previous season Skaer was #1 in the MWC for net punting (which takes returns into account) and #24 in the country in that stat.

  53. bulavinaka January 4, 2014 6:23 pm

Glad to hear Benny decided to stay. I think any athlete coming out of high school as a top prospect expecting to have immediate role come gameday, only to be activated halfway though his true freshman season, put into a starting role for a single game, only to be demoted and have minimum playing time the last three games of the season and have minimum playing time this past season, have thoughts to explore option with other programs that may fit his needs. I’m sure he’s not the only one and we’ve officially heard players requesting to transfer. Best of luck to Benny.

  54. SteveM January 4, 2014 6:40 pm

    Hi Garret! Long time….
    Glad to see you back.

  55. Need confirmation January 4, 2014 7:12 pm

Jeezy, Why would you say you still believe the poster that said Fonua wanted to leave? Sportsbow on the Scout site said it was Manoa #1 who posted that and he posted false information before. I have read your previous posts which have been interesting but what you have posted on the Scout board under your “dabowman” signature (as follows) seems inflammatory:

I too am sick of all the negaitve garbage spewed in the name of being a fan…..I like many more are supporters and fan does not even closely resemble my passion. As for that other board I do not see posting as worthy simply because it has an overabundance of pusillanmous cretinism that spend way too much time in negativeville…….Go Warriors!!!!!

  73. boolakanaka January 5, 2014 7:50 am

Aloha all. I do not know any specific facts of Mr. Fonua’s situation, but will volunteer the following. In this age of a 24/7 information cycle coupled with the advent of social media–well, it lends to a diaspora of stories and half-truths.

Further, and the more relevant point, having been in many a locker room, dissatisfaction of playing time and threat of leaving is a daily staple, among the players. Most everyone was a prime-time player in a former life, and thus, being a role player is not something that one easily settles into and/or accepts. The bows of the early 80s, had no fewer than 7-8 starters that were previously with other programs. So, again to restate–I know nothing of the present situation, but to say, is be careful on what you say and who you say it to (which is applicable to not just a college athlete, a blogger, or anyone else) things can be easily misconstrued in a moment of frustration and taken entirely out of context, in a moment’s notice.

  74. DoubleB January 5, 2014 8:16 am

@boolakanaka – I just hit my imaginary like button. Good post.

  75. boolakanaka January 5, 2014 8:32 am

74–Mahalo nui—bottom line, whether he said it or not, lets not extrapolate too much out of the momentary musings of a young man.
