JC rush-end to sign with UH
Luke Shawley, a rush end from San Diego Mesa College, will sign a letter of intent with the Rainbow Warriors today and begin attending UH classes in January.
Today is the first day mid-year transfers may sign national letters of intent.
Shawley, who is 6 feet 3 and 255 pounds, is capable of running 40 yards in 4.58 seconds, bench-presssing 400 pounds and squat-lifting 600 pounds.
In 10 games this past season, he had 74 tackles and was third among California JC players with 10 sacks. He also recovered two fumbles.
Cornerback Cesar Fermin of Moorpark College also will sign his LOI today.
Linebackers Tui Unga, who previously signed with Fresno State, and Rashaan Falemalu, a 2013 Kahuku High graduate and Paipai Falemalu’s younger brother, will join UH in January. After signing with FS in 2012, Unga was scheduled to go on a church mission. But he did not meet all the mission requirements and, a year later, was free to sign elsewhere.

It appears recruiting is going swimmingly – at least on paper. Hats off to whoever is getting these guys. Although it must be difficult to recruit with a 1-11 season just completed, they seem to be getting some quality players.
Now this is what I call a “get.” Congrats to the UH coaches for their recruiting results.
Looks like a Woodard’s vacated DE spot is covered. Shawley looks like he can step in right away, taking off the pressure for new commits Silva and Fairchild from needing to be ready immediately.
Depth at WR, RB, DB, and DE looks good for quite some time. Just need a QB or 2 and of course more OLine and DTs… Never can have too many bigs.
RE: QB prospects…. Wandered across Morgan Dirickson way down on the interest list. Saw some of his film and he looks like a hidden gem. Arm strength is ok, but definitely improved from 2012 to 2013. Has enough zip when he plants and throws. Can really improve once he cleans up his footwork. He is accurate over the middle and hitting seam routes and seems to have good anticipation as some of his good throws are fit into deep zones without a tons of space. Always keeps eyes down field when avoiding the rush. Also, his offense is similar to UH’s offense, that’s always a plus.
Don’t think UH has an offer out, but he looks every bit as good as Tuileta and his videos show better quality throws. Tui’s video only shows wide open balls, which doesn’t tell me anything about a QB’s ability.

When new recruits are announced they all have highlight films and impressive stats. I’m always curious about their injury history. We actually find quite a few good players that seem to get hurt alot and some who never play enough games to get in a groove. That might be the reason some of them didn’t end up at bigger programs. I’m not knocking anyone, just hoping that everyone stays healthy.

34. Kapoi’s offer from UH was downgraded to grayshirt and I heard the staff weren’t going after Mataafa, for undisclosed reasons. So, some of these commits to other schools are by design or changed priorities/interest on the part of the UH staff.

If I could couch potato one BIG need the Warriors gotta recruit is DT’s. Towards the end of the 2012 and 2013 seasons, we really lacked depth there and paid for it. There are only a handful of these type of athletes and they end up going to elite schools/conferences. We need to head down to Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia to find that big guy and hopefully can be a qualifier…
Funny how the naysayers say Chow & 1-11 hurt recruiting. I know it’s 2-3 years to really tell if a class is successful or not, but I just looked at the ’08 class. Seems going 12-1 didn’t help land any super duper players either.
I think the ’13/14 classes have way more talent than the ’08/09 classes with potential to be better across the board.

Most big time recruits will run in the 4.5-4.6 range laser timed. It beats having your friend hand timing you with a slow hand… Then telling the world you run a 4.4 40….
46. Recruiting at Hawaii has always been about evaluating though…. 1-11 has definitely hurt recruiting in the sense that teams like Utah St and Nevada can now poach Hawaii recruits vs 4 years ago, we could poach all of those schools recruits and only had to worry about Pac 12 poaching us….

Bess was clocked at 4.6-4.7 at the combine. Ray Rice 4.8. I think the key is the shuttle times and 10yd dash. Shows how quick your burst are.
I’m down with Jeezy’s point–we need three legit cover (man-on, not zone) corners. Obviously, dependent on who the next DC is, and his own philosophy, but unless you can provide firm and consistent corners, especially in your dime packages, you are fairly limited in the looks and schemes you can run. Now some folks confuse great speed with being a great corner. Certainly while pure speed helps, it is fluid and flexible hips, with specifically “make-up speed”, that are essential. Pass that, folks that play with instinct and have ball skills, makeup the total package.

Every position group is different on what measurables to look at.
I do like the size of players that are coming into the program the past couple years. There are way more 6’3″ and taller guys coming in along the lines. Players with longer frames usually can add weight without sacrificing speed better than short squatty guys. Historically, UH doesn’t pull in many 300+lb linemen that aren’t blobs, typically UH must develop the linemen’s size. Taller guys can carry the added size better.
Watching the you-tube – is it my imagination that his passes seem to “float” to the receivers? does this indicate lack of arm strength? allows DBs to make up “ground”

As to Beeman, here are some side-boards as applied to the USC slant. Their current coach, Cynthia Cooper, was a two-time all American and won 2 national championships. In short, next to Cheryl Miller, she is a Troy legend. Further, her salary is probably in excess of 750k, or more than our Head football coach. USC women’s b-ball is a premier program, that nets a profit close to 3 million annually. Long story short, should they ever want her, she is gone, probably make easily 5 times her salary right off the bat.

51 & 57 You guys are right on the mark! The 40 Yd time is not the only pertinent measurement of a player’s ability to move. There’s also the burst of speed. The need for the other attributes is dependent on the player’s position like agility and stepping out off the ball. Its also nice to have a guy like the one we had they called the “Club”.

I’m going to miss Hartong. Somebody has to step up whether it’s Nikki Taylor, or Tayler Higgins to be the face of the program. We’ll have to see about the incoming freshman and transfer OH Passi.
It doesn’t matter if you’re under 6 ft. tall to be a great QB. Lots of examples out there. In college, if you’re 5’9″, 5’10”, or 5’11 it doesn’t matter. Talent and athletic ability can do the job, and making plays. Eddie LeBaron was barely 5’7″. Russell Wilson said he’s 5’10 3/4 in, Drew Brees is barely 6 feet, Michael Carter was probably around 5’10”, but he was 215 or 225. We need that 4th QB in the spring. Time is running out.
85. Eddie Lebaron played football more that 60 years ago. Yes, he was very talented but now this is a different era. The players are much bigger and faster. There were a lot of changes in football Strategy since then. Michael Carter played in Paul Johnson’s triple offense where the QB has to be a lot tougher so as to take the hits. It was not a passing offense. The Saints give Drew good QB protection. As I watch football I notice the number of times the QB gets the ball slapped back just as it is released. These defensive linemen come in at 6’6′ -6’8″ and with their hands raised up, its a forest. Lets face it realistically; If your offense is the triple offense and you are playing misdirection football, that little mobile QB might just be your guy. If you want a drop back QB in the pocket, you might want a 6/4″ QB. —Your comment…
Sounds like UH recruited locals hard. No can do anything if they don’t want to stay home. Just don’t lie and say they were never recruited.
Looking at recruiting in general… I can’t remember the last time UH ever had 20-ish commits before Christmas break.
Typically UH was around the 10-15 number at this point and then a mad dash scramble to get kids last to fill the slate the last 2weeks before signing period.
UH still needs a few more, but so far so good. Very nice DEs committed so far.
I got to agree with jeezy, Luke Shawley is SEC caliber talent that will land on Hawaii defense line. Jeremy Castro, Kennedy Tuilmasealii, Moses Samia, Beau Yap, Luke Shawley and rest of the D line looks good so far.
Terrance Polk reminds me of a Chris Gant speedster at WR, hopefully he can make it too. Tigi Hill will be huge upgrade at safety, I hope Tigi makes it to UH as well.

Just saying and not Chow hater in any way, but if he doesn’t win more than 3 games next season, he should be let go…In addition, I think BJ should be replaced as well for his lack of action on several fronts unless he’s able to obtain tangible improvement in attendance and excellence. It’s all about results and unfortunately, college athletics are viewed as a business.

It will be interesting to see how verbal commitments stick for all schools this year. The dead period was doubled this year, giving less time in January for schools to poach commits. On the other hand, schools may have pushed harder for verbal commitments in December because of the long dead period. February will be interesting and exciting…

I am not an apologist for Ben Jay but does any other AD have it as difficult as he? Who else starts a year in the RED by having to pay others to come to a home field/court to play? Is UH the only one with this expense attached to its athletic department bill?
I am sure UH is not the only one that does not have its own on campus stadium. Who else has the same arrangement with management as UH has with the State with regard to revenues and expenses when it comes to use of the facilities? Is there another similar one?
Is there another entity that has the kind of travel expense that UH has? This is the price we have to pay to play, understandable, but what is UH’s in comparison with others who may be in a somewhat similar situation?
I believe that Ben has a more difficult hand to deal with and as such, I believe that UH athletics is in a more tenuous situation that other programs. Much of the issue has to do with what we have to do/pay to play. Some of it is probably unavoidable, but others could be adjusted (stadium) to be more in alignment with others in a similar situation.
That being said, being in the “red” here is not the same as being in the “red” say in San Diego.
I could be wrong on the assessment, but I believe that Ben is going to need more time to get things in a better shape and fear that if he cannot, it would spell doom for UH athletics as we know it.

Ferds article proves that Chow should have been fired! we needed a new HC to bring life back to the stadium. Otherwise expect next year to be closer to 2.5 mil short. Sad times for UH ahead. I really hope Chow can figure this out so we don’t lose our sports!
