JC rush-end to sign with UH

Luke Shawley, a rush end from San Diego Mesa College, will sign a letter of intent with the Rainbow Warriors today and begin attending UH classes in January.

Today is the first day mid-year transfers may sign national letters of intent.

Shawley, who is 6 feet 3 and 255 pounds, is capable of running 40 yards in 4.58 seconds, bench-presssing 400 pounds and squat-lifting 600 pounds.

In 10 games this past season, he had 74 tackles and was third among California JC players with 10 sacks. He also recovered two fumbles.

Cornerback Cesar Fermin of Moorpark College also will sign his LOI today.

Linebackers Tui Unga, who previously signed with Fresno State, and Rashaan Falemalu, a 2013 Kahuku High graduate and Paipai Falemalu’s younger brother, will join UH in January. After signing with FS in 2012, Unga was scheduled to go on a church mission. But he did not meet all the mission requirements and, a year later, was free to sign elsewhere.

Alright looks like recruiting is going well.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

So much for the comments that we won’t be able to get recruits!

  4. richfromoc December 18, 2013 8:40 am

Wow. 74 sacks in 10 games? I know, its only a typo but I can only dream.

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!

    Woo Hoo top ten!!!

  6. Former UH Athlete December 18, 2013 8:42 am

Wow… This kid sounds like a beast. Just keep Oregon St away from him…. They took away Tua’au last year (but didn’t work out) and Harris Ross already this year.

  7. (Jesse)James December 18, 2013 8:42 am

Looks like recruiting is going well. On paper, looks like some good gets for D.

  8. (Jesse)James December 18, 2013 8:43 am

How much does he dead lift??? Just curious. 🙂

  9. Former UH Athlete December 18, 2013 8:43 am

74 sacks in 10 games, damn! LOL… Nice one ST

  10. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2013 8:46 am

Thanks for the correction, guys. 74 sacks would have been impressive.
This is my second week on vacation, and it seems there are a lot of newsy things happening. I should go on vacation more often.

Meanwhile, poor JoJo is lamenting that her future husband — Brad Pitt — turned 50 today.

    What about Tigi Hill?

    What about Sale and Tago?

With size + speed you can chase anything. RB’s, QB’s, Championships.

  15. Numba 1 Son December 18, 2013 8:54 am

It appears recruiting is going swimmingly – at least on paper. Hats off to whoever is getting these guys. Although it must be difficult to recruit with a 1-11 season just completed, they seem to be getting some quality players.

  16. PurpleMaple December 18, 2013 8:55 am

Now this is what I call a “get.” Congrats to the UH coaches for their recruiting results.

  17. Former UH Athlete December 18, 2013 8:58 am

Looks like a Woodard’s vacated DE spot is covered. Shawley looks like he can step in right away, taking off the pressure for new commits Silva and Fairchild from needing to be ready immediately.

Depth at WR, RB, DB, and DE looks good for quite some time. Just need a QB or 2 and of course more OLine and DTs… Never can have too many bigs.

RE: QB prospects…. Wandered across Morgan Dirickson way down on the interest list. Saw some of his film and he looks like a hidden gem. Arm strength is ok, but definitely improved from 2012 to 2013. Has enough zip when he plants and throws. Can really improve once he cleans up his footwork. He is accurate over the middle and hitting seam routes and seems to have good anticipation as some of his good throws are fit into deep zones without a tons of space. Always keeps eyes down field when avoiding the rush. Also, his offense is similar to UH’s offense, that’s always a plus.

Don’t think UH has an offer out, but he looks every bit as good as Tuileta and his videos show better quality throws. Tui’s video only shows wide open balls, which doesn’t tell me anything about a QB’s ability.

End of year/semester stuff going on with all my kids. Just trying to get past this week…

  21. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2013 9:06 am

Sale and Tago are awaiting results of test scores. If they do OK, as expected, they join in January.

  22. Al December 18, 2013 9:07 am

We got the athletes, now we need coaches who know what they’re doing.

  23. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2013 9:07 am

Don’t forget that Jeremy Castro, Quinton Pedroza and Kory Rasmussen count as “initials” for the 2014 recruiting class.

  24. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2013 9:09 am

UH is holding scholarships for Terrance Polks and Tigi Hill.
    But the clock is ticking.
Friday is the last day of the fall semester. It’s difficult, but not impossible, to process 2014 spring applications during the holiday break.

  25. DoubleB December 18, 2013 9:11 am

ST, no word on interested coaches for the UH staff vacancies. … sorry to press, I know you’re on vacation and like to shop like a chick. 😉

  26. Kaimiloa December 18, 2013 9:13 am

When new recruits are announced they all have highlight films and impressive stats. I’m always curious about their injury history. We actually find quite a few good players that seem to get hurt alot and some who never play enough games to get in a groove. That might be the reason some of them didn’t end up at bigger programs. I’m not knocking anyone, just hoping that everyone stays healthy.

  27. Jeezy33 December 18, 2013 9:14 am

    Wasn’t Rasmussen a walk on

  28. Traitmanz December 18, 2013 9:14 am

    Ualesi Sale?

  29. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2013 9:19 am

If all goes according to the plan, Rasmussen will go on scholarship in the summer.
He still would count as an initial because he’s a walk-on who wasn’t in the program for two years.
I think Marcus Langkilde, who completed his UH eligibility, counts as an initial for 2014 (unless there’s room in the 2013 class, in which he can be counted retroactively).

  30. dannyp December 18, 2013 9:21 am

    17

Dirickson only completes 50% of his passes… If we’re going after a HS QB I’d prefer Chase Forrest or Kilton Anderson.

  31. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2013 9:22 am

Here’s a strange case. Remember Cory Lau? He was recruited by the previous regime, grayshirted, and then was “retired” by Mack. He just came off the books.

  32. Jeezy33 December 18, 2013 9:25 am

    30. Take a chance On nsimba Webster and ask him to do Manziel type stuff .. He’s Johnny football of Bay Area .. Have de lasalle trouble .. But defense couldn’t stop them

  33. Jeezy33 December 18, 2013 9:29 am

We still need corners … I would say safety too but if trayvon Henderson moves over , we should be fine. His body fits the safety mold .. Ewaliko should add depth as a fresh… Need cover corners though … Lot of good ones in wsfl

  34. Leahi2 December 18, 2013 9:35 am

#2 & 3 Recruiting going well? l would hold on to judgment for a while! From this blog it seems that Mataaafa commits to Wazzu, Kapoi decommits and then commits to Wisconsin. and the Kaiser HS. guy (Fitiiahi)? committed to Oregon State. Then there’s Fangupo to a JC, (not a recruiting fault).

St: How about an interim roster of commits from both mainland and Hawaii so that we all get a clearer picture and open up intelligent discussions? By the way anybody returning from a Mission for next season? Thank You.

  35. Jeezy33 December 18, 2013 9:40 am

    34. In my opinion , we have a lot of work to do recruiting … Got some good high school studs.. But I wouldn’t be worried about the guys you mentioned … None were really on the radar to begin with …

  36. Kaimiloa December 18, 2013 9:42 am

    34. Kapoi’s offer from UH was downgraded to grayshirt and I heard the staff weren’t going after Mataafa, for undisclosed reasons. So, some of these commits to other schools are by design or changed priorities/interest on the part of the UH staff.

  37. Jeezy33 December 18, 2013 9:45 am

Shawley is PAC 12, sec caliber guy …

  38. dannyp December 18, 2013 9:46 am

    32

I’d take him. If he doesn’t work out at QB we could just move him to DB. Maybe a packaged deal with Malik Hutchings?

  39. jeezy33 December 18, 2013 9:55 am

    38. All I know is he is lightning quick so yeah if he didn’t pan out at QB, def could play slot or corner.

  40. jeezy33 December 18, 2013 9:57 am

I think this play made ESPN top plays one week.

    http://extramustard.si.com/2013/11/18/video-california-high-school-quarterback-nsimba-webster-juke-an-entire-team/

  41. bryson December 18, 2013 9:59 am

I wonder why Kilton Anderson hasnt had any offers I know he trasnferred to Skyline in Washington but i didnt think his recruiting would take that big of a hit the kids has some wheels on him

Hey guys, im very interested in your post.. great job

  44. NotNasti December 18, 2013 10:07 am

ESPN Recruiting Nation has Nsimba Webster listed at 5’9″ and 160 pounds, 4.62 sec. 40 yd. dash. Might be too small (for QB) and too slow (for receiver)?

  45. Luki December 18, 2013 10:09 am

If I could couch potato one BIG need the Warriors gotta recruit is DT’s. Towards the end of the 2012 and 2013 seasons, we really lacked depth there and paid for it. There are only a handful of these type of athletes and they end up going to elite schools/conferences. We need to head down to Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia to find that big guy and hopefully can be a qualifier…

  46. Marleysdad December 18, 2013 10:10 am

Funny how the naysayers say Chow & 1-11 hurt recruiting. I know it’s 2-3 years to really tell if a class is successful or not, but I just looked at the ’08 class. Seems going 12-1 didn’t help land any super duper players either.

I think the ’13/14 classes have way more talent than the ’08/09 classes with potential to be better across the board.

  47. jeezy33 December 18, 2013 10:11 am

    41. I think he just isn’t that good.

    44. I bet he is in the 5-9 – 5-10 range but if he was 6ft he’s probably going to Oregon. So sometimes smaller schools go for that type of QB. At least the 4.62 was laser timed at a legit combine. Most big time recruits will run in the 4.5-4.6 range laser timed. It beats having your friend hand timing you with a slow hand… Then telling the world you run a 4.4 40….

  48. jeezy33 December 18, 2013 10:13 am

    46. Recruiting at Hawaii has always been about evaluating though…. 1-11 has definitely hurt recruiting in the sense that teams like Utah St and Nevada can now poach Hawaii recruits vs 4 years ago, we could poach all of those schools recruits and only had to worry about Pac 12 poaching us….

Sammy Lauaki just visited Utah St… So you better be praying he doesn’t flip…

  49. dannyp December 18, 2013 10:14 am

    44

Vernon Adams is like 5’10 and every last one of us would have killed to have him on our roster…

  50. jeezy33 December 18, 2013 10:19 am

    49. Definitely my point… I don’t care about Height is you got speed and can cause havoc on offense… Webster’s ball isn’t that bad and he torched legit competition in the bay area… you can pull up the de la salle highlights on his hudl and even he burned them for some big ones…

  51. jonj December 18, 2013 10:21 am

    44 .

Bess was clocked at 4.6-4.7 at the combine. Ray Rice 4.8. I think the key is the shuttle times and 10yd dash. Shows how quick your burst are.

  52. Boolakanaka December 18, 2013 10:23 am

I’m down with Jeezy’s point–we need three legit cover (man-on, not zone) corners. Obviously, dependent on who the next DC is, and his own philosophy, but unless you can provide firm and consistent corners, especially in your dime packages, you are fairly limited in the looks and schemes you can run. Now some folks confuse great speed with being a great corner. Certainly while pure speed helps, it is fluid and flexible hips, with specifically “make-up speed”, that are essential. Pass that, folks that play with instinct and have ball skills, makeup the total package.

    Good corners please…

  54. turfwar December 18, 2013 10:33 am

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiUho75Fn7Y Jeezy he’s pretty damn exciting with the ball. The first thought is to move him to slot but why not give him a chance at QB. Chow talked about giving that kid who’s still on his mission a chance at QB and he’s a very similar player.

  55. sdbowfan December 18, 2013 10:37 am

Yikes. This class does not look promising…

  56. A-House December 18, 2013 10:37 am

anyone know if the public, including students, have daily access to SSC Rainbotique during regular hours.

I know it’s always open for games at the SSC.

If closed, maybe consider moving it to upper campus so all can visit/purchase – others we have seen on the mainland, the bookstore and “sports” store are co-located within the same area/space – Oregon St, Navy, etc. location, location, location to sell your wares!

  57. Former UH Athlete December 18, 2013 10:47 am

jonj… Correct. I’d rather see the shuttle and 3 cone times rather than 40y dash. 40y dash is nearly
worthless for linemen. 10y, arm length and bench press are better items to evaluate the bigs.

Every position group is different on what measurables to look at.

I do like the size of players that are coming into the program the past couple years. There are way more 6’3″ and taller guys coming in along the lines. Players with longer frames usually can add weight without sacrificing speed better than short squatty guys. Historically, UH doesn’t pull in many 300+lb linemen that aren’t blobs, typically UH must develop the linemen’s size. Taller guys can carry the added size better.

  58. A-House December 18, 2013 10:47 am

Watching the you-tube – is it my imagination that his passes seem to “float” to the receivers? does this indicate lack of arm strength? allows DBs to make up “ground”

    Babers to Bowling Green

  64. A-House December 18, 2013 11:55 am

UH should stay from any assistant coach from a BCS school because they are so accustomed to “living the good life” that it would not be beneficial to both parties

however, that does not mean that they cannot be considered IF they apply for the position – then, applicant knows what’s in store for them like less pay, “junk” facilities, etc.

yet, the place and people can be the tipping point to accept the job.

  65. Boolakanaka December 18, 2013 11:57 am

Barbers follow Dave Clawson, who was making 400K.

  66. A-House December 18, 2013 12:00 pm

yet, UH has been or seem to be a great “starting” point for coaching careers as witnessed in 2013 of former players who went into coaching and now headed for HC positions – football and basketball comes to mind.

while I hope Laura Beeman will stay a long time, day will come when a BCS school bangs on the door and offer the “good living” which may be very difficult to turn down

plus 2 more if hill and polk qualify. 23. Great Christmas present for the Warriors.

  73. Boolakanaka December 18, 2013 12:26 pm

As to Beeman, here are some side-boards as applied to the USC slant. Their current coach, Cynthia Cooper, was a two-time all American and won 2 national championships. In short, next to Cheryl Miller, she is a Troy legend. Further, her salary is probably in excess of 750k, or more than our Head football coach. USC women’s b-ball is a premier program, that nets a profit close to 3 million annually. Long story short, should they ever want her, she is gone, probably make easily 5 times her salary right off the bat.

  74. whitey December 18, 2013 12:27 pm

plus 1 or 2 of ST “secret transfers”.

  75. Haleakala December 18, 2013 12:29 pm

Good looking recruits coming in. I hope that they all do their academic work before and adter arriving here! They can be physical specimens but they need do need to qualify in order to play.

  76. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2013 12:29 pm

  77. Boolakanaka December 18, 2013 12:43 pm

Well said ST! Being a Kanaka is not your zip-code or the block you grew-up on. Rather, it’s what is in your heart and what your actions reveal about you. That’s what’s great about being a young man, you chart your own course for life, and then start navigating your personal journey –imua!

  78. Leahi2 December 18, 2013 12:49 pm

51 & 57 You guys are right on the mark! The 40 Yd time is not the only pertinent measurement of a player’s ability to move. There’s also the burst of speed. The need for the other attributes is dependent on the player’s position like agility and stepping out off the ball. Its also nice to have a guy like the one we had they called the “Club”.

Dino Babers to be named HC at Bowling Green…

  85. derek December 18, 2013 2:31 pm

I’m going to miss Hartong. Somebody has to step up whether it’s Nikki Taylor, or Tayler Higgins to be the face of the program. We’ll have to see about the incoming freshman and transfer OH Passi.

It doesn’t matter if you’re under 6 ft. tall to be a great QB. Lots of examples out there. In college, if you’re 5’9″, 5’10”, or 5’11 it doesn’t matter. Talent and athletic ability can do the job, and making plays. Eddie LeBaron was barely 5’7″. Russell Wilson said he’s 5’10 3/4 in, Drew Brees is barely 6 feet, Michael Carter was probably around 5’10”, but he was 215 or 225. We need that 4th QB in the spring. Time is running out.

  86. Leahi2 December 18, 2013 3:00 pm

    85. Eddie Lebaron played football more that 60 years ago. Yes, he was very talented but now this is a different era. The players are much bigger and faster. There were a lot of changes in football Strategy since then. Michael Carter played in Paul Johnson’s triple offense where the QB has to be a lot tougher so as to take the hits. It was not a passing offense. The Saints give Drew good QB protection. As I watch football I notice the number of times the QB gets the ball slapped back just as it is released. These defensive linemen come in at 6’6′ -6’8″ and with their hands raised up, its a forest. Lets face it realistically; If your offense is the triple offense and you are playing misdirection football, that little mobile QB might just be your guy. If you want a drop back QB in the pocket, you might want a 6/4″ QB. —Your comment…

  87. Warrior Dave December 18, 2013 3:34 pm

Sounds like UH recruited locals hard. No can do anything if they don’t want to stay home. Just don’t lie and say they were never recruited.

  88. Former UH Athlete December 18, 2013 3:55 pm

Looking at recruiting in general… I can’t remember the last time UH ever had 20-ish commits before Christmas break.

Typically UH was around the 10-15 number at this point and then a mad dash scramble to get kids last to fill the slate the last 2weeks before signing period.

UH still needs a few more, but so far so good. Very nice DEs committed so far.

  89. Whats up December 18, 2013 4:29 pm

I got to agree with jeezy, Luke Shawley is SEC caliber talent that will land on Hawaii defense line. Jeremy Castro, Kennedy Tuilmasealii, Moses Samia, Beau Yap, Luke Shawley and rest of the D line looks good so far.

Terrance Polk reminds me of a Chris Gant speedster at WR, hopefully he can make it too. Tigi Hill will be huge upgrade at safety, I hope Tigi makes it to UH as well.

Interesting sidebar to Dino Babers hiring as Bowling Green’s HC: the starting center the past 2 years, & a team captain this year, is Kelii Kekuewa (KS-Hawai’i, ’09). BG State totally smoked 14th-ranked Northern Illinois a couple of weeks ago, & they’re now bowl-bound against Pitt.

Boolakanaka, the latest Oxy alum mailing shows your buddy Doug Semones on the inside cover modeling some sweatshirts: still mean-looking, warts & all, a bit rough-edged in a tough sense, of course. Did you know that UCLA’s Jim Mora’s dad is an Oxy grad?

You all have a great holiday! KS campuses have Founder’s Day tomorrow, then PAU SCHOOL ’til 1-6-2014!

Just saying and not Chow hater in any way, but if he doesn’t win more than 3 games next season, he should be let go…In addition, I think BJ should be replaced as well for his lack of action on several fronts unless he’s able to obtain tangible improvement in attendance and excellence. It’s all about results and unfortunately, college athletics are viewed as a business.

I like what Gibb is doing and that’s giving us some optimism…

    99. 3 games?? It’s bowl or bust for chow! He has had plenty time to implement his system. If it don’t work next year it won’t ever work

It will be interesting to see how verbal commitments stick for all schools this year. The dead period was doubled this year, giving less time in January for schools to poach commits. On the other hand, schools may have pushed harder for verbal commitments in December because of the long dead period. February will be interesting and exciting…

Reading my book on UH history and i found it interesting when they mention the Von Appen era

Von Appen saying “They asked me to win the kentucky derby but they asked me to do it with mules”
or him telling Dan robinson “he wouldnt make it here because he was a mormon”
having our offense in ranked 105th in 1996 and 107th in 1997 then moved our defensive coordinator to offensive coordinator which caused us to drop to dead last in the nation

Just reading about it gives me nightmares makes Chow look brilliant lol

I am not an apologist for Ben Jay but does any other AD have it as difficult as he? Who else starts a year in the RED by having to pay others to come to a home field/court to play? Is UH the only one with this expense attached to its athletic department bill?

I am sure UH is not the only one that does not have its own on campus stadium. Who else has the same arrangement with management as UH has with the State with regard to revenues and expenses when it comes to use of the facilities? Is there another similar one?

Is there another entity that has the kind of travel expense that UH has? This is the price we have to pay to play, understandable, but what is UH’s in comparison with others who may be in a somewhat similar situation?

I believe that Ben has a more difficult hand to deal with and as such, I believe that UH athletics is in a more tenuous situation that other programs. Much of the issue has to do with what we have to do/pay to play. Some of it is probably unavoidable, but others could be adjusted (stadium) to be more in alignment with others in a similar situation.

That being said, being in the “red” here is not the same as being in the “red” say in San Diego.

I could be wrong on the assessment, but I believe that Ben is going to need more time to get things in a better shape and fear that if he cannot, it would spell doom for UH athletics as we know it.

    Good morning, gang!

Nice to see the signees keep coming.

Any word on possible coaches, ST?

  113. Boolakanaka December 19, 2013 6:06 am

HiloBilly–thanks for the update on Dougie. Your alma mater is in great hands–a championship is a year or two away!

  114. jonj December 19, 2013 6:44 am

Ferds article proves that Chow should have been fired! we needed a new HC to bring life back to the stadium. Otherwise expect next year to be closer to 2.5 mil short. Sad times for UH ahead. I really hope Chow can figure this out so we don’t lose our sports!
