Mission statement

When BYU ruled the WAC in the 1980s and 1990s, opponents groused about playing against much-older players. The Mormon church administers BYU, and under the old rules, a player could spend a year at BYU, go on a two-year mission, and return as a 21-year-old sophomore or second-year freshman. (The eligibility standard has changed and now a man can go on a mission at age 18.)

UH — as far back as Kaulana Noa’s recruitment in the mid-1990s — found the loophole know as “grayshirting,” in which a player delays his initial full-time enrollment a semester. That freezes a player’s eligibility clock while allowing him to participate in spring ball entering his freshman season. If a grayshirt then redshirts as a freshman, he  eventually will become a 20-year-old freshman with four years to play four seasons. Through the years, the Rainbow Warriors have had dozens of grayshirts, most recently running back Joey Iosefa and quarterback Ikaika Woolsey.

Now the Warriors are combining both approaches — grayshirts and missionaries — to sprinkle older (and presumably mature) players into recruiting classes. In January, grayshirt linebackers Jamie Tago, Ualesi Sale and Rashaan Falemalu join the Warriors.

With the commitment of Alta (Utah) High receiver Mack Richards, the Warriors will have four players on missions in 2014. Receiver/running back John Ursua, offensive lineman Gus Lavaka and quarterback Aaron Zwahlen join UH in 2015, in time for a season featuring road games against Ohio State and Wisconsin. (Ursua and Lavaka began their missions late.) Richards will join UH in 2016.

While I like Dino Babers, I hope those calling for Babers as head coach are watching the FCS schools that are winning. Because although Babers offense is not effective in inclimate weather like rain and snow, Baber lost to pro style power running lower seeded Towson yesterday. And today North Dakota State pro style offense is whipping Coastal Carolina spread offense at halftime 34-7. Just something to keep in mind.

Not sure I see the whole mission thing as a strategy like you suggest with today’s post. Other teams pass on guys going on missions because they want players to have a more immediate impact. As a recruiter, if a guy needs to develop, you redshirt him and develop him in the program so by his Jr. and Sr. year he is what you want.

There is too much of a time investment in guys that go on missions that I don’t really see being worth it. To have to develop a guy after two years away from training and playing the game probably means you take 1-2 years developing him in your program and system (assuming that is even the same). You’re looking at 4 years before they realistically have an impact.

Are those the guys we should be recruiting? Especially when you have a coaching staff that is on such a hot seat? Not for me.

It worked for BYU because they have a constant turn over of athletes coming off of missions, so it is no different than a freshman coming in.

I don’t mean to disrespect guys that go on missions, because that is their religion and their life. I respect that.

  10. kev-1 December 14, 2013 8:55 am

    Challenge for the day . . .

Football players that have gone on missions and come back to have successful (actually had an impact) careers at UH. I’m sure there are some, right? Anyone got any?

That’s probably what Chow & Co. are trying to do. It doesn’t pay off until the third or fourth season (if he remains coach for that long).

ESPN’s Trevor Matich (although I really don’t care for him), served on an LDS mission to Mexico, then returned to start for BYU during their 84 National Championship team. Matich played some 12 years in the NFL, I believe. I believe that Kahuku’s Robert Anae, (77 Kahuku grad and former missionary) was also a starter on their O-Line.

UH has had their shared of returned LDS missionaries who did well in David Stant, Ken Niumatalolo, Tavita Sagapolu, among others.

#7…while you’re probably right we are “stuck” w/ him next season so I’ll still be screaming “GO BOWS”…now buying season tickets again is another story…”IF” the team does well I go on a game to game basis. I can’t see forking out over $500 for 2 season tickets to watch them lose. It’s very painful to watch…

So coach Chow will be back next year. There are many experts on this blog that can see the future and know that he will fail next year and be terminated. They may be right. But they have all said it so many times, in so many ways that it gets very, very boring hearing them say it again. Perhaps Stephen can start another blog and specifically reserve it for those who want to say coach Chow will be fired over and over again. Then they can enjoy saying the same thing endlessly and appreciate each other’s company and how deeply wise they all are. Then perhaps the rest of us can have a place to discuss something new.

You can bet that Wyoming will be a better team next season. Good coaching makes a big difference. Attention to detail, fundamentals, winning attitude, teaching, play calling, special teams, etc. All put together makes a big impact. When you are a 2 time national champion, maybe a 3rd title soon coach, that’s saying something. Coach Bohl will earn his $750,000/year salary. I predict the Cowboys will go to a bowl game next season.

Mack Brown is not going quietly into the Austin, Texas night! Guy has too much ego and pride to step down, not to mention the money he makes. Can’t feel sorry for him. He doesn’t have to work for the rest of his life.

  25. boolakanaka December 14, 2013 9:35 am

Let’s not compare us to Towson , EIU or NDST because they would blow us out of the water. Their players are more disciplined, their coaches knows how to make adjustments and their defenses knows how to make stops. If we played either one of them we would get our butts handed to us.

  28. Stiguy December 14, 2013 9:51 am

I am tired of hearing the people say they want to see the team succeed but grumble about renewing their season tickets. With all the season tickets sold and paid for the program might be able to afford more experienced assistant coaches. Chow had to bring in young and inexperienced coaches because they were cheaper. Fire Chow now and it will take another two to three years to rebuild the team under a new coach. The kind of success some people are demanding will cost north of $3 mil annually for coaches salaries.

  29. Tired December 14, 2013 10:02 am

23,29……the landscape of college sports has changed and will continue to change…..the big money programs have leveraged their influence into more direct access to the money that is needed to succeed….while the rest us hang on for dear life…..if we had the big dollars we could do many things we can’t do now…..I wouldn’t want Ben Jay’s job….if he can succeed I give him all the credit imaginable….if he fails it won’t be a surprise and it won’t because he doesn’t know what he is doing…..I respect the man, what he is trying to do and what he is up against….both in the national landscape of college sports and in the ponderously slow and inefficient institution that he works for….I really don’t think he needs our great ideas as much as the very tangible support of us showing up and supporting to the extent that we can.

So let me get this straight, the football program is in shambles but yet you blame the fans for not spending their hard earned money to see a failed product. Do you expect to pay for a car without the engine, I hope not. The UH Admin had a chance to show the fans that they were willing to make changes but they chose to go with the status quo. So you can’t blame the fans if they don’t want to pay to see more of the same.

Your missing the point! And I wouldn’t down talk the Hawaii Football players by calling all them undisciplined. Thats friggin FOUL on your part! I actually watched these team play and they committed bone head penalties too. I doubt any us those teams and E Illinois would blowout Sean Schroeder, Joey Isosefa and the Hawaii offense. The Kaumeyer defense would give up some points but I have faith that the offense would be able to take on a FCS defense. It would be a close game not a blowout!

Don’t tell me that because very early in the season E Illinois beat SDSU because if they played in the last game of the season E Illinois would get there okoles handed to them by SDSU. We all know that in the beginning of every season and upset can happen because of new starters and teams haven’t gelled yet. Come on Man!!

  33. Sofaking_blk December 14, 2013 10:23 am

Can you imagine if CFB was like the English soccer league? Top teams that underperform are automatically kicked down the lower leagues. The way we played the last 2 years we would be kicked down to DIV 2.

Except that these are institutions of higher learning. At the end of the day, the educational mission is the primacy of the entity, and everything else is a distant second.

If we can’t field an athletic program that operates annually in solvent way, then we re-think athletics at UH. Past that, educational models, not professional sports team business models, are the more relevant posit to consider.

REALLY, I distinctly remember Tulimaseialii getting a personal foul that pretty much cost us the game against Navy. How about 6 straight running plays against Wyoming in OT. How bout our 3rd qtr play, no halftime adjustments. So no matter how many excuses you make, 1-11 is 1-11 and that’s indisputable.

  37. Hodad December 14, 2013 10:37 am

Mormon Church doesn’t just administer BYU, they own it. Babers team played in a blizzard, I wouldn’t just call it inclement weather. When was the last blizzard here? It certainly favored a good running team, but EIU still scored a lot of points. #36 Rodney: you still need someone to coach em up. That UH does not have.

  38. tom mui December 14, 2013 10:42 am

If some of these characters would pony up a couple of millions ($$$) instead of just yapping, maybe BJ would listen and hire someone like Mack Brown, Urban Meyer etc.

So I’m gonna use your own logic ok.
EIU beat SDST in San Diego, but we lose to SDST at home.
E Washington beat then #25 Ore St but we loss to Ore St.
NDST beat the reigning Big 12 Champs Kansas St in Manhattan, do you really think we’d beat K St.
GA So beat FLA in the Swamp, you really think we’d FLA in the swamp, we tried that remember, 56-10.
You see the pattern here, all of the FCS teams would beat this year not because I think their better than us but they are certainly better coached than us.

Hawaii is 1-11 in FBS football nobody including myself is saying otherwise, Again anybody with half a brain can pick a few plays to call out as bad plays from any team at any time. But you have to keep level headed about Dino Babers and Chow or whoever you think should be head coach of Hawaii Football. I’m not convinced that Chow pro style and now pro style spread them up Wynn winkle to the offense doesn’t work on all types of weather. Because we seen Sean Schroeder and Joey Isosefa, Chris Gant and company move the ball and score tons of points in cold, warm, freezing, wet weather. The Kaumeyer defense was just bad in all weather.

I watched the game and Babers offense stalled quite a bit, it wasn’t the refs that stopped Babers offense every down mind you. It was Towson defense and DC that stopped Babers offense. If you offense doesn’t work in all types of weather isn’t to the coach jobs to game plan for weather? Babers failed to game plan for the weather and he lost because of it. It wasn’t a sudden freak winter storm, so Babers knew about it and failed and lost. We don’t give Chow and Kaumeyer no break for messing up game planning and losing, so why are we Babers a kitchen pass?

If his offense only works in sunny warm weather then away games at Boise, Wyoming, Air Force, Colorado State, Nevada, Utah State and other teams in cold, rainy, snowing conditions are automatic losses under Babers? Thats what hear is Babers offense only works in warmer weather as excuses from some folks here. From what I seen Babers needs more time to refine his offense and head coaching.

  41. dannyp December 14, 2013 10:55 am

Dude you’re hating on an offense that put up 39 pts on a top ten opponent. Chow only put up more then 39 pts twice this year and that was against Wyo and Army…

Nobody said that Babers offense was gonna win every game. But you’ll win a hell of a lot more games than Chow’s offense do you agree. With Babers Offense we would be very competitive in the conference and would make a few bowl games as well. Do anyone honestly believe that we would ever make it to a bowl game with the current system in place?

  43. Sofaking_blk December 14, 2013 11:07 am

Now your reaching, If NDST played K State in the last game of the year, do you honestly think NDST would beat K State again? Or would K State be a better team by the end of the season? The Oregon State team also would beat E Washington at the end of the season. Of course, Hawaii would beat any of these FCS teams in the last game of the season at Aloha Stadium, it may be a close win, but they would win.

Again reaching, Hawaii played a Tim Tebow Florida team under McMackin, do we really need to compare 2008 Tim Tebow Florida team to the Muschamp 2013 team!! Bro you are really not using the gray matter god gave you are you? This season Florida was awful, so in the last game of the season Hawaii did have a legit chance to upset Florida in the swamp, yes I believe thats possible! Florida was terrible against the run as GA So showed and unlike in the RnS years Hawaii actually ran and moved the ball with Iosefa, Lakalaka, Langkilde and Diocemy.

  45. Whats up December 14, 2013 11:14 am

The current offense in place is moving the ball and scoring a ton of points, it was the defense that was a failure! If the current offense had a friggin defense that could stop anything then yes Hawaii will make a bowl game next season and beyond. But the key is getting a DC that can coach defense lights out.

  46. Sofaking_blk December 14, 2013 11:18 am

You can’t pull the “what if” card, those teams played this year and the FCS teams won. I remember us losing to Colorado early in 2010 , but “what if” we played them later that year, I believe we would’ve spanked them. So you can’t pull that “what if” card whenever it’s Convient for you.

  47. Whats up December 14, 2013 11:22 am

Thats why the Chow pro style offense, even the spread out Wynn pro style offense works better in all weather. You have to have a run game in your or the offense will not succeed everywhere, anytime, anybody. Auburn runs the hell of the ball, Florida State has a run game to help Winston, Alabama has run game to help out McCarron. And NDST, Towson both have run games as well. That was the problem with the RnS it lacked a true run game, so most teams just unloaded on the QB.

  48. markazulu December 14, 2013 11:35 am

After watching Babers E Illinois this season I think Babers needs more time to refine his Offense and Head Coaching before coming into the hornets nest of Hawaii Football Fans. June Jones, McMacking and now Chow found out how hard we the Hawaii fans are on our coaches and I just don’t think he is ready for the Hawaii FBS level coaching job for 2014 season like some say. I’ve been reading that Chow is weary about the Hawaii HC job and if Babers came in now and only won 3 or 4 games in 2014 or 2015.

Do you think we the Hawaii football Faithful will be happy with that? Because we are all building Dino Babers up and the expectation will be a bowl game first year and if he doesn’t make it. He practically doomed in all the blogs, it will be fired Babers before year 2 even happens. I think Babers should take another year or two and take why he learned this season and refine his offense and find a defense style or guy that can stop somebody from scoring. Then by that time we will know whats Chow or whoever fate is? And Babers can bring in a complete staff that can win games from year 1.

  51. markazulu December 14, 2013 11:44 am

The offense improved significantly in the 2nd half of the season but the problem with this team on both offense and defense is “Consistency” we have looked stout on defense at times then we have moments we give up BIG Plays or shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties or offensively we would have 3 and outs because of questionable play calling.

  52. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 11:44 am

If we are talking about chances that should be given i think Daronte Jones should be moved up to Defensive coordinator. He has the background

From 2005-09, Jones was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Bowie State University in Maryland. In addition to coordinating the Bulldogs’ defense, Jones also served as the pro liaison. At Bowie State, Jones’ defense was known as an aggressive, attacking unit that ranked No. 1 in Division II in total defense in 2009, allowing only 217.7 yards per game. They also ranked No. 2 nationally in rushing defense (56.5 yards per game) and ninth in pass-efficiency defense. Two Bulldogs were named first team All-CIAA and two more were named to the second unit.

During his tenure, BSU’s defense ranked in the Top 5 nationally in five different statistical categories (total defense, scoring defense, pass-efficiency defense, sacks and rushing defense, including third or higher in total defense). Under Jones’ watch, eight defensive players were named All-CIAA, three were named All-CIAA Rookie Class, and one was named D2football.com All-American.

You would think older players like returned missionaries would be more mature, more disciplined, more composed, and smarter. That being said, they wouldn’t make as many penalties, much less stupid penalties like personal fouls or illegal block in the back.

That QB from BYU Nelson went on a mission after he played one year at Utah St. and after he returned he decided to enroll at BYU and he did have a pretty good career there. Mike Wadsworth went on a mission and came back and wanted to play for BYU also. Hopefully, our players honor their commitments, but if Chow gets fired before they come back they might go elsewhere. It’s a dicey situation. For us fans, having to wait 2 years to see a player play that’s tough.

  70. manoa2 December 14, 2013 1:53 pm

My main point is that having a good coach makes a big difference and it is not all about talent and recruiting. A team cannot get better with a bad coach to put it simply. And that extends to the staff as well. We are getting rid of some bad coaches, that may help some and we will see how much. Chow is a bad coach, but he is new to being a head coach and has an opportunity to learn, get better, and turn his career around. Seems to be learning to get better coaches under him since he got rid of so many, so if the coaching staff is rebuilt he can start coaching the players. And the players need coaching, we lost key players, particularly the QB and our best receivers, so another challenging year.

73.. I think UH can get somebody with great potential in the $300k range. They might be unproven as a DC, but there should be plenty of young up and coming position coaches to choose from that would take a shot at UH. If they prove to be successful, they might not stay at UH, but UH would reap the benefits of being the stepping stone.

UH just doesn’t have he budget for a proven DC, otherwise they would have to pay more than what they are paying Chow.

I think UH could attract a defensive minded lower division HC with $300k to take the DC opening. I think the median HC salary for FCS coaches is somewhere around $180k-$200k. Less for D2 or D3.

  72. UH91Alum December 14, 2013 2:54 pm

Hmmm, may Coach Chow should give one of the Lee Bros a call – Cal, to see if he wanna fill in as DC!?!?

  73. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 3:03 pm

I think we all have an inkling where Cal Lee might be heading.

  74. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 3:04 pm

    UH doesn’t have $300,000 for a DC

  75. ai-eee-soos December 14, 2013 3:05 pm

    Mack Brown pau …

Texas: Mack Brown has announced his resignation after 16 years as head coach at Texas.

Tremendous career. Great coach. He will be missed. Mack will coach their bowl game against Oregon.

  76. Tired December 14, 2013 3:10 pm

Good coach, bad coach……well I wonder how many on this site really have the knowledge to know a good coach from a bad one. Our current coach has a very poor record over the last two seasons, no doubt. So it is not very hard to say he is a bad coach and have support for that position.

But I doubt that there are more than a few posters here who could be high school coaches and even less that could come anywhere close to being college coaches. Most of us would be best placed in pop warner. I don’t say this as an insult but as a probability. Similarly there are very few here who could even imagine being qualified to be an AD.

So it is easy to take shots at a coach who is down and an AD who has hard decisions to make. But that has been done endlessly here. I don’t read this blog as having Chow “loyalists.” Anybody who went to grade school can do the math and see it is not good. But a decision had to be made: keep coach Chow or fire him. The decision has been made. Some don’t like the decision and I can understand why. But move on already. The broken record of the comments is worse than the record of the team and coach.

  77. ai-eee-soos December 14, 2013 3:13 pm

    77. ST: Reardon, in his column, said TK was getting 250K.

The difference comes from the difference in Price’s salary,

and the low-dollar salary of one of the two new Asst Coaches positions.

plus squeezing a turnip here and there.

  78. numba 1 son December 14, 2013 3:18 pm

There appears to be an impression by some that UH is able to take money from one position coach and put it towards another – i.e. take salary from vacat OC positions and apply to DC position. Dose anyone know how the process works relative to salary of football staff?

  79. ai-eee-soos December 14, 2013 3:24 pm

82: I no sabbe how the salary process works, but in this case – no mo OC position – abolished.

But, look, get two Asst Coach positions open.

It appears that the OC position was abolished, and another asst coach position was created.

    but, again, I no sabbe.

  80. numba 1 son December 14, 2013 3:31 pm

#83. Makes sense. But remeber, we’re talking about UH. Lots of scratch your head moments fom both upper and lower campuses. Would be nice if they posted salary range.

  81. ai-eee-soos December 14, 2013 3:34 pm

correction to # 83: I no sabbe if the OC position has been abolished, or not.

BUT, a 2nd Asst Coach position has been opened. and den, where the money coming from
    for this 2nd position?

    me? – I no sabbe – I only talk.

  82. UHfan808 December 14, 2013 3:44 pm

    Good afternoon, Tsai-kos and Lurk-ers! 🙂

  83. NotNasti December 14, 2013 3:48 pm

    85. Kimo: the 2nd asst. coach position is Tuioti’s open position.

  84. Former UH Athlete December 14, 2013 3:51 pm

82… The 300k number comes from Aaron Price’s $120k and TK’s reported $240 or $250k coming off the books. I know several here struggle with stats and numbers and what they mean/represent.

$300k is assuming UH doesn’t spend all the money Price and TK’s departures leave available.

If UH isn’t willing to pay over $200k… Probably best to promote Daronte Jones to DC as it would be the cheapest option and he’s got DC experience at a lower level with good success.

  85. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 3:55 pm

The $250,000 figure came from me.
UH had to get some help to pay it.
It’s not going over $250,000 for the next DC.
    Trust me.

  86. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 3:59 pm

    Re: Eastern Illinois
There’s no question Dino Babers is a good coach.
The relevance of Babers to UH is only historical. Babers is not coaching here next year or the near future.
I’m fairly certain nobody even thought of Babers until one of our columnists, who has a weird feud going on with the football program, mentioned him. I know this because: 1) There was hardly any mention of Babers before the column appeared, and 2) Babers applied for the opening in 2011 and nobody — nobody here at least — vouched for him.

  87. Former UH Athlete December 14, 2013 4:04 pm

82… As far as how UH comes up with the coaching pay scales…. They probably take the number that it would take to get it right then divide by 3

The top big program coordinators make $600k to $800k… Most good position coaches at big programs make $200k-$300k. The better HCs seem to average $1.8 to $2.5 million (a few way higher, several lower)

Divide by 3 and voilà…. UH’s coach pay scale…ok, that’s harsh but it is a numerical coincidence.

  88. NotNasti December 14, 2013 4:05 pm

    weird columnist = weird feud

  89. Former UH Athlete December 14, 2013 4:05 pm

Hey quick question… Does OJ Simpson still vote for the Heisman even if he’s in jail?

  90. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 4:06 pm

UH already has a pay range in place for its coaches.
It’s set by the Board of Regents.

  91. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 4:11 pm

    Here’s the background.
Someone would call the coach a few times a day for stories. Coach decided he would answer someone’s questions after practices. Someone didn’t go to practices, then got mad that coach wouldn’t take his calls. Everyone said someone should just go to practice. Someone said he’s busy waiting for calls at the office. They’re both stubborn. I think it’s both frickin’ amusing and irritating.

  92. papajoe2 December 14, 2013 4:16 pm

FUA~ didn’t OJ get his Heisman taken away? If so, I don’t think he can vote.

  93. gobows December 14, 2013 4:19 pm

    who coaches the receivers???

demarest should tell hadden to stop kicking the ball straight when the ball is placed at the hash marks. the hash marks are outside the uprights. most of his misses went straight and would have been good from the crown of the field.

  94. papajoe2 December 14, 2013 4:33 pm

#94~ probably would have voted for himself.

  95. gobows December 14, 2013 4:36 pm

according to the washington post, tom kriessman, owner of a steel company, bought oj’s heisman in 1999 for $255,500 at auction. he keeps it hidden in a safe deposit box in philly. he bought to impress his gf, thought it sounded good at the time.

i would doubt that a ballot is sent to the lovelock nevada correctional facility.

i think reggie is the only 1 to have his heisman revoked. although charles white should have lost his too.

  96. Rodney December 14, 2013 4:57 pm

#92 Why is it so hard to spend
90 mins at practice and get to
see for yourself .Thats why most
of us enjoy your take away from
    practice, your actually present.
First hand not just an opinion!
    Gotta side with coach.

  97. Haleakala December 14, 2013 5:22 pm

I remember the year when Texas pulled out of a game with Hawaii. JJ said in response that Mack Brown couldn’t be from Texas, since Texans keep their word.

  98. wafan December 14, 2013 5:23 pm

    100!

  99. Shoko December 14, 2013 5:38 pm

I was thinking that Babers would be a good fit at Arkansas State. Only problem that exist is that the school itself, within the last several years, has been on a coaching carousel with Freeze, Malzhan and now Harsin being one-and-done head coaches. That’s got to be a record.

Anyway, will be interesting to see who replaces Mack Brown. They, the school, could really hire anyone, except Saban, to be the new head coach considering their huge bankroll.

  100. Shoko December 14, 2013 5:41 pm

Hmm, still confused about this so-called columnist that is at odds with Chow.

  101. Shoko December 14, 2013 5:44 pm

UH does have a pay range, but I could have sworn I heard someone mention TK’s salary had to be improved because it was above its normal pay range. So, I would think that the salaries are negotiable.

Then again, I’m just an outsider looking in regarding what and how the process works at UH.

  102. papajoe2 December 14, 2013 5:44 pm

Shoko, I think the columnist is at odds with the coaches.

  103. Shoko December 14, 2013 5:45 pm

    123. Meant approved rather than improved.

  104. RedZone December 14, 2013 5:45 pm

I hope coach Chow can do what the Towsend Tigers coach did. He too started off slow and look where he is 5 years later. He started off with 2-9 then a 1-10 then a complete turn around in his third year with a 9-2 season. And now he beats Babers for a semi final FCS playoff game berth.

  105. Shoko December 14, 2013 5:46 pm

    104. Okay, at odds with Chow’s coaching staff. Got it (except the name).

  106. Moocher December 14, 2013 5:47 pm

    the feuding “reporter” hmmmm…..

when i was covering golf i’d walk the course. get the feel and mood from the crowd, the players, see many many things that television will miss. other reporters would stay in the media center and watch the round on the television and basically “parrot” other reporters or what everyone already knew from what they saw on t.v. they didn’t want to put in the work for what they were paid to do and PRIVILEGED to do, things that if you or I had access to we’d be be 100% stoked and happy to do, things we’d might even to do for free just to be close to the people and sport we love.

i wonder what’s a good guess on the percentage of information of what we get is second hand, shared, or “parrot” reporting?

  107. RedZone December 14, 2013 5:49 pm

Townsend is going to be playing EWashington who’s coach is one of the ones I wanted before Chow was picked.

  108. Shoko December 14, 2013 5:53 pm

Think you mean Towson and not Townsend.;)

  109. RedZone December 14, 2013 5:57 pm

    Yep.

  110. Shoko December 14, 2013 5:57 pm

When I think about Towson, I think about that game against Kent State when one of their players ran the wrong way on a muffed punt. Pretty funny.

    Lets revisit one year ago…

  111. Tazer December 14, 2013 5:57 pm

Well just my take. Chow need all the help he can find(fans and coaches). But heard some fans are not renewing there season tickets. Until a new head coach is in place and prove he can win games. Before they decided to come back. And these people don’t blog here.
Ben Jay will have a hard time finding people to come to the games. And more hard times on the football program. Less money to go around other alethic programs.
And who ever Chow get to help him coach this team. Has to do the best job and coach the players. And know what they are doing and calling. For my part I don’t care who the person is Just Coach, and know what you are doing.
As for now and incoming players. Just have wait till season start before you judge them on how good they will be. Because you can have all these good and best players. But not coach them right and you will loose games.
As for Cal Lee he might stay where he is happy doing his job. I might be wrong, ST why don’t you go and ask him, if he would come back to UH.
For you fan here Chow (like and haters) you all sound like broken records. And you all can dream what you want. Seeing is believing, so until that happen just be real.

And hope Chow can get more “W” and that what count the most. Or else he is gone for good…

  112. RedZone December 14, 2013 5:59 pm

But lately it seems our coaches have been coming from USC and there will be some looking for jobs including their linebacker coach who also has some DC experience.

  113. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 6:05 pm

I think things are a little backward. Instead of folks saying: “UH should hire Joe Schmoe …” perhaps the query should be: “Joe Schmoe should apply for the job.”

  114. gobows December 14, 2013 6:09 pm

    #99 haleakala

the last time texas had the balls to come to aloha, they used a 30 year old imposter named ron weaver aka ron mckelvey. he played in every game that year, i think they went 11-1 before getting blown out by va tech in the sugar bowl.

texas’ penalty, give up the bowl revenue.

any other school would have had to forfeit all the games.

    ncaa is bullsheet

  115. RedZone December 14, 2013 6:11 pm

Okay so I went to UH site to check the stat meter for the basketball game which has not started. It shows Chaminade has already won the game 96-87.

  116. gobows December 14, 2013 6:14 pm

    redzone, who came from usc?

  117. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 6:15 pm

Good point, except I’m not sure a 30-year-old is an advantage.

  118. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 6:19 pm

Bet Saban wishes he were going to Texas now.
Texas will be a better job than Alabama.

  119. RedZone December 14, 2013 6:23 pm

I meant coaches with ties like da Gib, Beeman, Wooley and Chow. Since Coach Sark bringing in his own linebacker coach from Washington I am assuming that Ekeler might be looking for a job.

  120. RedZone December 14, 2013 6:25 pm

I wanted Saban to go to Texas. Maybe he did not want to leave his office which has an automatic door opener.

  121. dannyp December 14, 2013 6:34 pm

    116

Trust me if the job opens up “Joe Schmoe” is gonna apply.

  122. Tired December 14, 2013 6:35 pm

113….of course if we have a losing team people will not come…..another miserable season like the last and this long time season ticket holder will have a lot of trouble renewing…..but I think we have a chance to be good next year.

I liked Bob Nash as a person…..but his team was painful to watch and the Stanley was turning into a morgue during games…..I also remember that fans were almost insisting that our old friend Herman Frazier give coach Nash the job…I wonder how many of them are humble enough to admit they had no idea what they were talking about…….Gib has put together an interesting entertaining team….they are winning…..and people are coming back….many wanted Gib’s head last year…fans just want a winner…..I understand that…..but I don’t think most fans are very good at evaluating coaches…..fans remember June Jones as being great because he took a decent team with a very soft schedule to the sugar bowl……it was great fun…..but remember the atrocious display of football at Boise State the game Timmy Chang was supposed to break the NCAA yardage record…..it was embarrassing to watch….we were awful…..coach Jones’ teams were not all great….a bunch of them were not even good.

It will be the same with coach Chow’s team….win…..and people will come….the rest is all details

  123. dannyp December 14, 2013 6:35 pm

Unless some other proactive school picks him up first.

  124. gobows December 14, 2013 6:38 pm

redzone, there is a huge difference between basketball coaching jobs and football.

in football the equipment manager (student) at usc gets paid more than assistant coaches at hawaii.

assistant coaches at usc get a better deal than the head coach at hawaii.

would you take minimum wage pay to do the same job at a smaller organization?

i would be surprised if any bcs teams assistant coach applies for any of the openings.

need to look to the fcs for coaches. you might find another urban meyer or jim harbaugh.

  125. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2013 6:39 pm

    126, 132…

Any chance that we can change the comment system to force commenters to login with Facebook/Twitter like several other websites use?

Having your profile picture and real name next to the comment is self policing.

It eliminates most of the hateful comments because commenters can’t hide behind 8 logins. Using Facebook/Twitter allows people to trace who makes racist/insulting comments and there can be real consequences. There have been plenty stupid people who have lost their jobs over insensitive/racist/incriminating Facebook posts & comments the past couple of years.

Might need to consult the IT gods at Star Advertiser to see if it’s feasible.

Standhardinger has 27pts right now… Even more impressive is that he’s currently 14-16 from the free throw line. That kid is just a blue collar bulldog. Not overly quick, not overly athletic, not a great shooter… But the guy just knows how to be at the right place at the right time all the time and hustles like crazy. I think he’s one of those guys that can anticipate where the ball will bounce while the ball is mid-flight to the hoop after a shot.
