Utah receiver commits to UH
Mack Richards, a multi-skilled receiver/returner from Utah’s Alta High, has accepted a scholarship offer from the Rainbow Warriors, according to his father, Bill Richards.
Richards will be on a delay route to Manoa. He plans on serving a two-year church mission after his Alta High graduation in June. After that, he will join the Warriors in time for the 2016 season.
Richards is a little taller than 6-1 and weighs 190 pounds. Despite an injury, he finished the 100-meter sprint in 10.9 seconds at Utah’s state track meet this past spring.
Richards has 125 catches and 26 touchdowns in his Alta career, including 62 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 TDS this past season. He also scored on four returns — two each on punt and kickoff returns.
Richards and UH receiver Ammon Barker, who redshirted in 2013, were Alta teammates in 2012.
Richards had been in “conversations” with Washington State, Oregon State, Utah State, Utah, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado and Arizona.
“(Hawaii coaches) came really early,” Bill Richards said. “They came last year. Coach (Lewis) Powell has developed a good relationship with Mack. They understand missions. He’s planning on serving a mission after graduation. And they like to throw the ball. As a receiver, that’s a big thing.”

Coach Norm Chow confirmed that the quarterback competition is wide open for spring training, which opens in April. That means Taylor Graham, who started three games before suffering a shoulder injury; Ikaika Woolsey, who started two games, and Jeremy Higgins, who started a game in 2012, will get equal reps for most of spring training.
There is a possibility Graham will have surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder. If he were to undergo a procedure, he would be ready for the start of spring training.
The Rainbow Warriors are expected to sign Punahou quarterback Larry “Tui” Tuileta, who can’t put his commitment in writing until Feb. 5. (He could not sign during the early period for volleyball, which he also will play, because his UH scholarship will be covered by football.)
But Tuileta is preparing to be a Rainbow Warrior. He told the WB he has cut his long hair.

Here’s a thought for Dr. Chow and his staff. Hire a Game Management Coach as his Offensive Coordinator. He/She needs to be a cerebral student of the game and its flow.
Studies and analyzes our teams and opponents strengths and weaknesses. Develops a game to game plan e.g. Hurry up offense, Ball Control, Blitz or cover, optimum use of time outs, substitution patterns, penalties. Half time adjustments. etc. Lots of charting, data collection and numbers crunching. In football preparations makes the difference in winning and losing. Maybe our problem is not how much preparation, but “how are we preparing.” At this stage of his career, Dr. Chow needs an edge. Instead of sniping him, maybe we should be trying to help him.

I just hope the current coaching “dismissals” does not affect the recruiting effort. It’s on defense where recruiting has to really succeed this season, so losing two coaches on D will be felt.

Congratuations to Jordon Wynn, but I would rather have someone more like Jordon Wynn’s coach and offensive coordinator– look at the job he is doing at Fresno– scoring more than 20 points a game more than us. We are handicapping ourselves by not improving our coaching staff to match the rest of the conference– coaching makes a difference and it is why the other teams are doing better than us– look at the other coaching staffs in the Mountain West and and their new hires and you see former NFL and BCS coaches, you see a head coach who was offensive coordinator for two of Saban’s championship Alabama teams (the Colorado State Head coach), one head coach who was the head coach at Notre Dame, look at the new head coach and his staff at San Jose, look at the defensive and offensive staffs at Utah State, San Diego State, and San Jose State. Coaching makes a difference– it takes more than recruiting players.
Well, fresno did have that Carr guy. I’m sure if we had a talent like that we’d have been much better off. Who’s the ex-ND coach?

They gotta go out and get some JC QBs. They can’t put all of their eggs on what they have right now. I’m not gonna automatically assume that Tuileta is gonna light it up next year and neither should you. EVERYBODY knew that TG was gonna do great things last year, how’d that turn out? The way I see it, they have no choice but to find some JC starting QBs who are ready right NOW. If they don’t then this team will struggle again.

QB competition will be open…and settled within one week of spring by TGraham. Don’t Ikaika and the others will overtake him at this point.

Agree with #18. We don’t have a QB. And the schedule next year is tough as well. Can’t see Chow making it past next year. Can’t see any good OC or DC wanting to coach under a lame duck coach. UH football is washed up on the shore, with waves crashing all around.

also, its been a long time since UH recruited a black QB – last one was Mickey Carter and he grad in 1992 – curious thing is that most of the BCS schools all have a great black QB including the SEC

Having been on many a Tomey team meeting, I can assure you “keep it close”, was neither his mantra or philosophy. He wanted to punch people in the mouth, have an especially gritty defense and the expectation of big plays from special teams. While not an offensive juggernaut, he certainly wanted to beat up on people.

Chow created the “mess” he’s in, so I’m sure he knows or has an idea on how he’ll be able to get out of it by hiring replacement coaches. The writing is surely on the wall however, that Chow needs some Ws on the board next year or he’s gone. Realistically, that equates to 6 wins and a Hawaii Bowl appearance…anything short of that will be hard for UH officials to justify keeping him on further.
My guess is Chow will “circle the wagons” and promote from within, since they all have a vested interest in the outcome of next season. The new replacements will likely be for position coaches from the grad assistant pool or someone from the outside looking for a safe haven for a year. One person Chow might consider is the recently dismissed St. Louis coach, Matt Wright, who might be a good hire for linebackers, since he was one at the UH and seems to have the right pedigree to assist in recruiting locally.
bob davie went 4-9 last year, 3-9 this year. i don’t see him doing much better than that, since he stunk it up at notre dame.

id rather see a good young coach like eastern washington’s beau baldwin have a shot at turning the hawaii program around.

I’ve read that Brian Cabral is very “old school” mentality, being a former linebacker himself at CU and with the Bears. I even remember him when he played for St. Louis on that team that beat Punahou (twice) with Mosiula Tatupu back in 73.

When I use the term it’s always in jest. It’s a running gag that I’ll use whenever I think it fits a certain situation. Like if Chow needs booster funding to augment the pay scale of a coordinator.
The term popped up when Gib Arnold was hired. Gib was not the choice of a few basketball insiders like Riley Wallace. They wanted a St. Mary’s assistant. People started grumbling on this blog that it was his connection to Punahou and some Punahou alumni that influence the decision. The term Punahou Mafia was coined to put a name to this unknown group of people.
Since then this shadowy organization has been ruputed to be behind such dastardly deeds as getting Obama elected, Norm Chow selected and the influx of Poly athletes to PHS.

Here’s what I don’t understand – as a state, Hawaii wasted $1 million on a loser. The justification now is that Hawaii doesn’t want to spend another $1.5 million to rid itself of this loser. Doesn’t make sense. Keeping Chow is more costly to the state and the program over the long haul. The damage done to the reputation of the program, in terms of future recruiting and attracting decent coaches, is hard to calculate. It’s safe to say a program with a reputation for losing is not a program top quality players and coaches are interested in playing for or going to, especially if they have any goals for playing or coaching at the next level.
Hawaii should write it off – the entire $2.5 million – as a lost investment. Just like the wonder blunder, and treat this Norm chapter as a learning moment.
Next coach should not get a 5 year contract, period.
2 year contract with option to extend for two. Minimum salary with opportunity to earn more based on total number of wins. Base salary of $200k, with incentives each season allowing the coach to earn up to $400 – $500k.
If coach loses a lot, like chow, then he only gets base salary of $200k, commensurate with his losing season and program.
If he loses a lot, like chow, after 2 seasons, state fires him, without any payout clause.

Oh, any see the article in the USA Today, this morning? I usually don’t read it, but was on some business and it was delivered at the hotel. Anyway, it talked about the potential bidding war between Alabama and Texas for Saban. What was really interesting, is the amount of money involved with the programs, both in excess of 160 million annually, and their backup funds. The backup fund is the profit margin they have received from net profits, exclusively from their respective athletic programs.
In short, they both return net profits between 16-20 million annually. Furthermore, UT had an “athletic backup fund” close to 60 million and Alabama was closer to 90 million. These funds are exclusively for purposes related to the athletic department–staggering sums!
BTW boola. Heard that this organization is not above giving out $10000.00 handshakes to Ivy League recruiters for a good recommendation for one of their students.
#52: Whoa brings back some (bad) memories. Old time high school football practice back in the day – 3 hour practices with NO water break (coaches used to bring water jugs and drink in front of the players), take a hand full of salt tablets (just salt, no fancy electrolytes like today) before practice. Coaches who ruled by a slap on the helmet, and yank of the facemask, and kick (literally) in the butt. Pretty much bordered on (if not) criminal by today’s standards. Just the way it was back then. Went to watch my first UH practice back in the early 70s as a high schooler and it seemed so…..civilized.
54… I kinda remember Wallace being in the anti-Gib Arnold camp…. but then I remembered that his protege was the worst BB coach in UH history (right up there with Arnold’s dad). Plus I think Donovan might have noticed also. Gib has done a fine job in rebuilding the team and they are really fun to watch right now. Just too bad fans are too lazy to show up. I do think the DHC attendance should be pretty good.
DHC Rd1 Boise vs UH will be a high scoring, entertaining game.

#58. Jeezy you got to have faith someone is going to step up. Rolo is the example people use as a QB that didn’t “get it” his first time around but “got it” on his second go around. You could update that example with Schroeder between last season and this.
Graham and Woolsey have the size and tools to get it done. Chow supposely has the expertise to develop QBs. If all else fails I can see with Joey, Lakala, St. Juste and Wiley running behind an imporoved O line that Higgins could manage a game quite well.
I think every UH coach has difficulty getting people to come out here.
For instance, on JJ’s first staff, his “OC” was an NAIA assistant and his special teams coach was running a car wash.
People might like Aranda and Rolo now, but when Mack hired them, one had a resume from Cal Lutheran and the other had to work in construction to supplement his JC pay.
Even look at Rich Miano. He was essentially out of work for a few years before JJ picked him up.

For the most part, I am still a believer that with most good QBs, you see signs and flashes of greatness very early on… But the inconsistencies are what separate them from when they gain experience…
I have the most respect for SS bouncing back this past season. He improved a lot… But by no means do I think he is a QB that would lead us to a bowl game..
I stand by my statement that he played well enough to win 4 games for us…
61–Old School—My position coach in HS was Ben Ronquillio’s younger brother, Tommy, who walked on at UH in the mid 70s, and I still have much aloha for him, but he was a Tasmanian Devil and crazy. Running up red dirt hills for 45-60 minutes, with no water at lunch. Forearms to the chest and face at practice. Pissed off about a scrimmage at PC high, and getting a 7 mile jog back to school, after we just scrimmaged for 2 hours.
Although he did save my butt one day, he use to have all these ex-UH types come to practice, like Cliff Laboy or in this story Mike Perkins, (ex kamehameha great and UH starter at safety). Anyway, I think I was still a junior in HS, and we use to play 7 on 7 every day in the summer. I did not know Mike Perkins, and he come across the middle, I use to be very cocky, and I clock him in the chest, without pads, and he falls to ground sort of startled. I see Tommy talking to Mike for like 3-4 minutes, later learned he saved me the easy whipping of my life.
mike perkins truly a gentleman and fine person. and yes, what a great athlete.

Ben Ronquillio had some good teams when he was Waipahu High’s coach in the early 70s(?). I think he had some kind of falling out with the AD at the time, Masa Yonamine (?) and was let go. Too bad, as he was a good coach.
Waipahu High had a quarterback in the 70s with the greatest name; Marco Minn. I think he went on to play at Linfield.
I think if Raphael Cherry played in today’s college read option game, he would have been a star. The guy had a great arm and could run the rock. His skills were a bit ahead of the times. he would have also made Anthony Edgar a star running back that would possibly have had a look at the next level.

The definition of “good” to me is efficiency, making solid decisions, and taking care of the football. Don’t have to be flashy, don’t have be a 4.5 speed guy, don’t have to have a strong arm. Just be fundamentally sound. We had such a QB before, Jason Whieldon. Remember him, he beat Alabama here when they were on probation and Shula was the coach.

FYI~Local boy Brian Ching testimonial game stream lined on Houston Dynamo sight at 3:30 pm today. The Dynamo is doing this because Brian is retiring. Made the USA World Cup team. Ah, Mike Akiu from Kalaheo High. He had some wheels. Akiu went to Washington State on a track scholarship. He wanted to try out for the football team, but the track coach said no, so he walked on at UH. Read that he later ran something like a 4.2 40 for some NFL scouts which got him drafted in the 7th round by Houston (when they had something like 12 rounds).

That Towson St. running back, Terrance West, looks like an NFL type player, maybe in the 3rd to 4th round. But he’s only a Jr. so he might go or maybe not. These FCS players are good players too. Romo, former Eastern Illinois alum.
Anybody else laughing at ESPN for going balls deep with the Mack Brown resigning and Saban going to be the replacement?
Brown is still the UT coach and Saban has just been locked up at Bana for $7M-$7.5M per year.
I see the “College Football Insider” leading the reporting for the last week has been spinning Brown’s banquet speach any way he can.
That’s what you get when you fly with a “make a wish” story from a biased blog site and unnamed sources.
Brown may retire after the bowl game but to think Brown was going to step down and abandon his team before a big bowl game is just dumb. Same applies to Saban… He’s got enough brains to not ditch Bama with their psychotic fan base.
I applaud Saban and his agent for milking ESPN’s lack of journalistic integrity to negotiate a HUGE extension.

With Saban locked up… I guess that means Jim Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin are the next choices. Or at least that what orangebloods blog would suggest as they listed Harbaugh and Tomlin as targets for Brown’s replacement the other day.

Just curious: does anyone know how many UH recruits, roughly, who’ve gone on LDS missions & returned to play for us, & who they are? Who are some who decided to decommit once they returned from missions?
also recall that eastern illinois brought a team with then future dallas cowboy qb tony romo to the islands. a june jones coached hawaii team beat them.
Oh great another Utah prospect, not impressive and not immediately to contribute, got to wait two years, forget it . No scholies to guys going on missions, by the time they come back , out of shape, lost skills , forget it. Chow won’t be around in two years. count on it!!

We had to wait 2 years for John Ursua. Well, that 2 years is next year so he’s either enrolling in January or this summer. Haven’t heard that he’s going elsewhere. He played some QB in HS so maybe he can compete. Otherwise, he was projected to be a WR or slotback. Hellava basketball player too. Point Guard.
With a budget over $2 billion annually, why pinch pennies with chow’s buyout of only $1.5 million? Jeff portnoy, new regent, please push for a buyout of chow’s contract, now, instead of later. You are good at settlement of potential claims. Settle this claim. Get chow out of here and into retirement so we can start the search for a new coach. Thank you.
