Boise State’s Chris Petersen is going to Washington. Here’s what the move means:
• Hawaii — No immediate impact. Unless both win their divisions next year, the Broncos and Rainbow Warriors aren’t scheduled to meet until 2015.
• Mountain West Conference — The league loses its marquee coach. At the MWC media preview in July, the line was long for television one-on-one interviews. Petersen was on a platform, literally and figuratively, with the scene reminiscent of favors being sought at a Godfather wedding. Let’s pretend the MWC is a morphism of the WAC, then Petersen is the league’s true home-grown attraction. It would be as if Robinson Cano were to leave the Yankees and go to Seattle. Wait … that’s happening, too.
• Boise State —Welcome back to the real world. Sure, with the’ talent and mesmerizing blue turf, the Broncos still will be good. But they won’t be the same. The common thread to success was Petersen, which is why the Broncos became even better after Dan Hawkins departed for Colorado. Petersen is built from the Bill Belichick mode, a workaholic innovator. It would be difficult to replicate his system because his system is an offense with a playbook as thick as the White Pages. The Patriots could afford to lose assistant coaches and everyone but Tom Brady. This year, the Broncos had so-so production from their quarterback. They won’t be the same without Petersen, similar to if the Patriots were to lose Belichick. Look at Nevada a year after Chris Alt’s departure.
• Media — The Broncos had the Garbo-esque media policy that was confounding even to the Idaho Statesman. When a kicker missed a BCS-busting attempt a few years ago, it would be months before he was available for an interview. BSU officials made Petersen unavailable from last week’s post-game news conference through, at least, this morning.
• Utah State — The Aggies, with few obstacles in the Mountain Division, become the new Broncos.
I think Boise will land on its feet.
One door opens, Petersen, and another closes, Kubiak. Perhaps, Gary Kubiak, can be the qb coach for JJ, when he makes his fictional phoenixesque return to the islands, as he saves both the program and Hawai’i–not.

Although Peterson is mentioned by almost every BCS school that has an opening for a head coach, I think this is the 1st time went as far as being interviewed. Congrats to him. See you next year!

Timing is everything, too.
When a guy says, “no, no, no,” to so many offers through the years, then all of a sudden agrees to interview for jobs and, then finally accepts an offer, the question is: Why now?
Aside from needing “new challenges” — because face it, I’ve been to Boise, and if its about restlessness it would have happened years ago — it must be: 1) It’s too difficult to get to the BCS playoffs through the MWC’s 12-team, two-division maze, or 2) The MWC is in trouble.
There’s always concern when a guy who didn’t want to leave for years decides to leave.
We’ll see how the Huskies and the Broncos do going forward.

Anyway, the list of potential candidates could include Brent Pease who was recently let go from Florida and Bryan Harsin who is still in his first year as a head coach at Arkansas State. Of course, Boise could head in a totally different direction and hire someone with no school ties.
Coach Chow is going to lead us to a seven plus win season next year and a bowl game victory.
14… right on. Boise has peaked under Peterson. I didn’t think Peterson would ever leave unless somebody convinced the family on the move. UW and the city of Seattle have done that.
I didn’t hear on terms yet, but I’m guessing $3 or 3.5million/year.

Boise better be very careful who they next. The past two BSU teams have declined on talent for Peterson-led teams. Peterson’s coaching got them to 8 wins this year. They only have talent for 6 wins this year. I see Boise struggling to make 7 wins next year if they don’t hire right.

The MWC takes the biggest hit with the one marquee coach leaving. Boise’s reputation will surely take a hit and will probably won’t climb the polls as fast as years past when they are good. Peterson and Boise was the MWC’s best chance to punch a ticket to the playoff, or at least the stepping stone team for someone else to make it.

sad/glad to see him go. sorry boise, you had your glory years. you’re just not a final destination for coaches. and unlike when Hawkins left, (and Peterson stayed). not sure who Peterson will take with him to UW and who will remain behind. If boise is lucky, they’ll try to keep the OC and that crazy playbook. if not, good luck starting from scratch.
the mwc will indeed suffer. fresno’s success this year was due to Carr, who is gone. San Jose’s was also due to their QB in Fales. USU will get Chucky back after his injury, but they’re not the ESPN draw that the ugly blue turf was.
wonder if Peterson will bring the trickery to UW and how that’ll work in the PAC-12. will he be able to get the 100% participation in offseason work outs all summer long? I don’t think so. boise is not seattle.

22.. Peterson hasn’t reached into the bag of tricks too much the past several years as the teams have gotten better. Just here and there when the time is right.
Peterson runs a power run game using multi TE sets and lots of formation shifts. The downfield passing game has gone away for the most part because Southwick wasn’t a good deep thrower.
Peterson inherits stud QB Keith Price, stud RB Bishop Sankey and stud TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins and a pretty good OLine. WR corp is so-so and defense also just so-so. Peterson has very good tools on offense to make an immediate impact. Defense may take a 1-2 years to build up.

As crazy as it sounds (and not going to happen), I could see June Jones having an immediate impact with the Texans. The tools are in place there. Keenum is a very similar QB to Colt Brennen and comes from a similar college system.
Again, not gonna happen, but why not hope for it.
sark is the 1st coach to voluntarily leave uw since darrell royal left for texas in 1956.
Did Price ever fulfill the hype though? I wouldn’t be surprised if they had someone better in the wings.

Well the landscape of college football coaching is one in which the very big dollars at the very big programs rules the day. Loyalty and allegiance doesn’t seem to mean much. Good for coach Petersen and bad for Boise. I guess they will be having thier own “June Jones has left the building” sort of experience. I was impressed by Boise’s rise to prominence but have to admit finding their eventual inflated sense of themselves a little tiresome with all of the conference changing and the like. They actually seemed a rather boring team this last year. Maybe coach Petersen could feel the decline of the program and didn’t want to associated with the down draft. I suspect that was part of June Jones’ reason for departure. There was no where to go but down and in coaching that means your wallet gets thinner.
The MWC conference is ripe and ready for a new dominant team. I hope it can be us. At least coach Chow wants to be in Hawaii and is not looking for the next big pay day. Despite coach Jones’ proclamations of love for Hawaii he left and left the program reeling. I’m not sure we have yet recovered from his departure. The idea of the great new upcoming coach riding into town and transforming the program seems unrealistic to me. Even if it happened it would be a flash in the pan as the same person would ride out of town seeking a bigger sack of gold elsewhere. So I say go coach Chow. Find a way to be successful and build a stable program. Let the great new up and coming coaches be our assistants who are here to learn from coach Chow before they depart. All we need is a winning program. And we need it now. There is no more time for losing seasons but I do feel a sense of opportunity.

UW has a very good freshman QB in Cyler Miles when Price leaves. Was voted the top dual-threat in his recruiting class and fairly accurate, if not mistaken. The cabinet will not be empty when Petersen takes over.
Agree that Utah St may become the new power of MWC. Keeton is back for senior year and the backup showed he’s got some game also, so they’re good at QB for years to come.
Lots of MWC teams with a ton of question marks heading into 2014.
-Boise is on some thin ice with the transition and not gamebreaker at QB.
-Fresno will have some serious rebuilding after Carr is gone and the defense as big of mess as UH’s.
-SJSU took a step back this year vs better competition, and I think they will be ok until Fales is gone. Then look out below.
-SDSU took a big step back this year, don’t think Rocky Long is a good recruiter.
-Wyoming is in disarray.
-Nevada-Reno too a big step back A.A. (After Ault) with a good returning cast on offense. Polian/Rolo tbd on if they can right the ship.
-New Mexico is bad
-Air Force is bad
-Hawaii is bad defensively, but showed signs of life offensively.
2014 MWC is looking like they are going to be really soft again, like this year.

With Peterson’s hiring, I don’t think there will be too many UW players wanting to transfer out. I would think the UW players are probably fired up to play for Peterson.
Peterson’s scheme won’t require any roster transformation other than a few tweaks here and there.

49. People forget (or don’t know) how little we pay our assistant coaches here. Their position coaches make more than our coordinators. At many other schools, their coordinators make more than our head coaches. Aaron Price was hired at $130,000. Keith Bhonapha, Boise’s running backs coach makes $160,000, their DC makes $340,000, and o-line coach makes $324,000. UW is another story. A mid-level PAC-12 team, Justin Wilcox, BSU’s former DC, made $750,000 last year. I HI, it seem like the fans want high-grade sashimi for canned tuna prices.
UW will probably be thin at the DB position. Not sure who they have coming in but they’re losing a lot of experience in that area.

Stephen, you’ve been to Boise so you should have a feel for the place. Correct me if I’m wrong but here’s my impression of Boise.
Boise is a place where everyone is all in when it comes to football. Everyone. The players, the coaches, the AD, Upper campus, the politicians, the business community and the local residents. Boise has a football culture that’s committed to winning. This culture was in place before Petersen arrived. He took advantage of what was already in place and took the program to the proverbial next level. The challenge for Boise will be to find the right coach to maintain that level. They’ve been pretty good at identifying coaching talent from Nutt, to Koetter,to Hawkins, to Peterson.
Finding the righnt guy has been a double edged sword for Boise. Find the right guy to produce wins and he’s out of there after a few seasons.
I thought this was interesting: Petersen once told former Oregon coach and mentor Mike Bellotti years ago he was eyeing UW, not Oregon.

Said this before, will say it again. Chow should hit up the Punahou mafia for some extra cash to pay for a decent OC. JW may be an up-and-comer but he mainly knows what Chow has taught him. Chow should get someone who has his own play book. Someone who can bring another prespective forChow to look at.

I think Washington made a great hire. Imagine what Peterson will do with a upgrade in talent. One thing he needs to change is players egos. Under his blueprint, everyone played a specific roll and had to accept that. Looking forward to our first game against them in 2014.

The thing with the “punahou mafia”, and most of those usual suspects, did not attend UH and have only a marginal interest in the program, at least at present.
As for Boise, who can tell us about its long history with Hawai’i–I’ll provide some clues, maybe folks like coco and nasti remember these blasts from the past: Eddie Chung (all state at Kailua) and David Hughes (All State Kamehameha and Seahawks). Boola sometimes pulls a nice rabbit out of the hat.
I suppose Washington has some special kind of facilities for Petersen’s son. I can’t imagine him moving otherwise.

67. Peterson was slated to earn 2.1 million next year at Boise, so factoring in cost of living, the 2.2 million he is getting from UW is not much (if at all) more than if he had stayed.

Was reading the Vegas paper and according to UNLV AD Tina Kunzer-Murphy, Notre Dame is considering the Hawaii Bowl.
Heck, UNLV might be one of the favorites to win the West Division next year. As mentioned earlier, Fresno is losing Carr (maybe Deruyter), plus Nevada, SJSU, and SDSU all regressed this year. UH is what it is for now.

Cindy Luis and Dave Reardon reporting on UH “crafting” some sort of administrative role for Dave Shoji apparently following his impending retirement from coaching…
Whatever that role maybe he should have HEAVY say in who succeeds him. Once Shoji hangs it up, this is ONE position UH cannot stumble on in hiring a new coach. Hate it or not, the Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Program itself deserves a place in the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame and the UH Circle of Honor. The program has been what all other sports at UH strives to be – consistent fan base, brand recognition (most people think of volleyball when they hear “Rainbow Wahine”- ZERO confusion there), national media respect, national championships, deep appearances in the post season, and a Top 10 product year in and year out.
77. Shoko: heard the salary on the radio and thought it was odd that 2.2 million would be near the top of PAC-12 salaries. Makes sense now. The 2.2 million probably was reported as his current salary. Must be the sea water in my ears.
I read somewhere that Sark’s contract involved a base salary of a little over 2.5 million with a max bonus (incentives) in the range of 1.5 million for a total compensation of 4 million. Considering Petersen’s record, it could a little more or a similar deal.
SDSU is going to be good next year. They lost a lot last year and return some studs next year. Utah St should continue to be a powerhouse in the other division.
Kaehler will be much improved. Pumphrey and Muema are a dynamic 1,2 combo at RB. Ruffin is one of the Top WRs in the MWC.
Defensively, SDSU is always physical and good at blitzing under Long.
If Hawaii can find a QB or develop Woolsey, they should win some games. Wyoming, Fresno, San Jose, Nevada at home, UNLV at home are definitely winnable.
Colorado St is the real sleeper to be the next powerhouse as long as McElwain stays. Young QB with a power running game and that Freshman WR was legit…
At Nevada, Rolo will have his hands full next season breaking in a new QB and sorting out his game plan. It will probably take him another year or two to mesh the Pistol and RnS the way he wants it and make it a system that his players can pick up quickly. They will probably be middle of the “Pack.”
On a non-warriors related sports item, Jay Z is fast becoming the thunderdome of sports agency representation: Jay Z’s current client list is comprised of Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees, Geno Smith of the New York Jets, Victory Cruz of the New York Giants, Skylar Diggins of the Tulsa Shock, and Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Todays $200 -plus million contract for Cano, solidifies his position as the uber agent in several different leagues all at once–(MLB, NBA, and NFL)–which is sort of breathtaking.

Last year when San Jose State went 11-2, they were invited to the Military Bowl at RFK Stadium to play Bowling Green in the nations capitol. The upper deck of the stadium was virtually empty and had an announced attendance of 17,000.

Hawai’i by the way is at 112 at just under 39 points per game. The 84 squad would have been the 6th ranked D, in this category.
That five-year contract for 18 million is guaranteed according to CBS Sports, not including bonus’. So, essentially he could end up making more.
It would make Petersen the 11th highest paid FBS head coach right behind Louisville’s Charlie Strong who makes 3.7 million.
Jeezy, I think WR Elroy Masters is at Colorado State. I didn’t see him with any stats this year so he may have redshirted the first year.
P.S. I love UW. Liked them since the days of Jim Owens and Bob Schloredt and George Fleming, etc. Then Don James era with Napoleon Kauffman, Mark Brunell, etc. then I actually like Neuheisal and Tuiasosopo teams. My son went to UW during Tuiasosopo was playing and they went to the Rose Bowl. Not to mention, I went to the Pacific Coast Banking School for 3 years at UW so I love the area. Went to college at Central Washington and always visited Seattle. Now, with Petersen there, I think things are looking up. Look for them to begin 2014 in the top 25 and I see them beating us bad in the first game. Just too much speed, too much talent, too many athletes, better coaching too.
I’m already making my early prediction, UW 56, Hawaii 10.
Incidentally, I heard that UW made Marques Tuiasosopo the interim coach for the final game and Bob Gregory (AHC and linebackers) interim for Boise State’s final game.

UH Basketball against Northern Arizona won’t be streamed by Big West TV. It will be covered by Fox Sports Arizona, though. But I assume you don’t get Fox Sports AZ.
Bowling Green looking good. If its true what they say (defense wins championships), then NIU might be looking at their first loss and be persona non grata in any BCS bowl.
If we don’t start winning, we’ll be majorly responsible for the downfall of the MWC, if it happens. The conference will always need a strong showing from Hawaii, Fresno, Nevada & Boise St., year in and year out. We’re pretty much weakening the overall rate of the MWC if we’re not considered a tough team to win against. My bad.. I keep thinking Fajardo was a senior. Wonder if he’ll heal in time for Spring? They need to work on their defense, too. He’ll have three somewhat experienced QBs, then. Interesting. If Fajardo can come back in time to learn some new tricks, they might be an interesting team to watch next season, too.

Their defense was the weak link specifically the rush defense. Think they are ranked last in the conference. Might be because of the transition to the Tampa 2 scheme.

NiU QB Lynch is being exposed on national tv…
BGSU finally figured out that you don’t have to respect the RB in NIU’s offense. They’ve contained Lynch for the most part the ground and took the lead to force NIU to throw.
Also Lynch is getting exposed as a very pedestrian passer. He’s got a decent arm, but like many “dual threat” QBs they can’t read coverage, they predetermine where they throw pre-snap and mechanics are sloppy. In these modern read option, high tempo offenses, the QB are only asked to make quick easy throws, mainly an array of quick screens, 3 step routes and horizontal throws. The only deep balls these QBs can hit are the wide open routes when DBs bite on the decoy screen.
Lynch is clearly having problems now that he’s forced to use his eyes and his arm.
On that last 4th down incompletion, Lynch threw the ball off balance (falling back to his left)… Subsequently pulling the ball too far left and led the WR out of bounds… Not mention he stared down the WR, allowing the CB to break with the WR to the sideline.

121… Are you referring to the vaunted Monte Kiffen Tampa 2? The defense that absolutely cannot stop a modern offense?
RE MAC championship game… Sad to see NIU’s defense quit like that in the 4th quarter… Sour way to end a good season. They still had chance after Lynch’s 2nd INT, but the defense offered little resistance after that play. Then the camera panned over to the defensive players on bench (while offense was back on) and they were completely out of the game mentally.

124. True, but the Pack rush defense was really bad this year. They were giving up on average 6.57 yards per carry. At one point during the season, they were giving up 7 yards per carry.
125. Yep, that same Tampa 2 that Papa Kiffin was running at SC. In fact, the Packs defensive coordinator was the linbackers coach under Monte before taking the job at Nevada.
Not too many team that I know of that use the Tampa 2 at the FBS level. Only other team I know of is Auburn during Chizik era.

I knew Bowling Green was going to win. First of all, they have the best defense in the MAC, by far. Two, their QB Johnson is very efficient. Three, I watched the entire game between Bowling Green and Mississippi State at MSU. Miss. St. won 21-20, but Bowling Green had a chance to win. That told me something right there that they could stay with an SEC team. Down the stretch in the conference Bowling Green was dominating their foes including beating Ohio, 49-0. That was impressive. So, I’m not surprised BGSU won at all.
119. Rolo’s salary mentioned in Philly.com article Jan. 2013 explaining why he backed out of the Temple job. Article states that Nevada doubled his salary to $240,000 in order to get him to stay.

Could see a repeat in the Fresno State – Utah State matchup. In other words, a good offense against a good defense. There seems to be a lot of similarities between those two matchups.
After a little bit of hunting, I realized I was wrong about Rolo’s salary being in the 175k range. Apparently, he’s getting less than that and not much more than what he was getting paid when he was hired by Ault.

Fresno St. and Utah State should be a good one. Common opponents, Utah State dominated San Jose State (with Chuckie Keeton), San Jose St. beat Fresno State. Fresno State beat Boise St. and Boise St. beat Utah State. Fresno St. has the better offense, Utah State has the better defense. Fresno State is at home where they are undefeated at home. The edge is at Fresno, but if the spread is 3 1/2 or more, I would go with Utah State to keep it close.
