Right direction
The Rainbow Warriors are scheduled to practice this morning at the University of Utah, then depart to Maryland ahead of Saturday’s game against Navy.
The Warriors have made the most of their time in Salt Lake City. They’ve had practices, meetings, study hall and numerous meals.
“This trip has been good for us,” quarterback Sean Schroeder said. “I feel we’re becoming even closer. We’ll see Saturday. We’re going to give everything we have, I guarantee you that, like we do every single game.”

It is relatively good news that defensive tackle Saui Matagiese has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL. It was initially feared he suffered a more extensive injury He will not require surgery, and could play again as early as the Nov. 16 game against San Diego State.
Keep fighting till the end. Don’t give up. Play 110% and good things will happen.

I give you credit ST. You seem to keep your usual positive spirit about you, despite the team’s woes. I admire that about you. I can’t seem to handle the frustration except by distancing myself from the program. It has to be pretty tough following the team as closely as you do. Notre Dame had its hands full against Navy. Navy should play even tougher at home.

Good morning Tsaiko Nation, BEAUTIFUL sunrise here in the city of angels as I gaze above my hillside looking forward to many opportunities around this metropolitan area. I always believe since playing for you GREAT folks of Hawaii that the pursuit of happiness is with in your grasp as determination and hard work has to be the focus at all times which will lead into success for the present and set the foundation for the future.
Will have my Hawaii gear on this morning as I recruit for upper campus in the South Bay Area. On my list of city high schools will be Hawthorne, Carson, Torrance, El Segundo, Playa Del Rey, Westchester, Mira Costa, Palos Verdes, Narborne, Gardena and the private small schools as I am just FIRED up with 2 boxes of UH materials as my goal within a 5 hour frame is to set a NEW record of UH interest cards 500 or more as I KNOW I can do this !
Car is ready and all materials are packed. Will be wearing my UH letter winner polo shirt with my aloha print shorts to match. USC, UCLA, Irvine don’t have a chance as anywhere I go I am signing these young high school kids up as I can’t wait to see Miss UCLA “hater recruiter” again as I will just give her my “rainbow smile” passing her down with my shadow in her near sided sight. LOVE recruiting for UH as I really give students all this University can offer a quality education, life in paradise and athletics to play at all levels intramural or intercollegiate.

This might sound like a dumb question, but do you reside in Kapaa, Kauai? (not making assumptions here) If so, have you met our lead Tsai-ko…LizKauai? 🙂
You can make the argument that when you’re 0-8 we are NOT going in the right direction. Navy lost at Notre Dame 34-38 last week. That spells trouble for us. We will lose this game easily but Niumatalolo and Jasper will be kind. I see it Navy 34, Hawaii 17. Coming and straggling home at 0-9.
But I will say the Hawaii and Miami-Ohio game would be interesting for two winless teams.

The NCAA should sanction a bowl game of two winless teams (if any). At least one team will end the season on a winning note. It could be called the Pink Slip Bowl, where the losing coach will have to turn in his resignation. ESPN could do a Game Day show on location and make a big deal about the game. Tongue in cheek, of course.

Saui’s news is probably the best news they could have gotten. Great news that he might be able to suit up again.
Just hope for no more airport incidents. This road trip has been rough so far… other than the team getting to work out at Utah’s facilities for a few days.

Here’s a completely different take on the current situation.
This could be the “perfect storm” new AD Ben Jay was dreaming about.
When one looks at the overall picture of UH athletics, one may find that keeping the whole ball of wax may be unsustainable. With travel subsidies, rising costs and the like, keeping all of the sports may be simply a luxury that is beyond the means of the system. So, the UH asks the NCAA for an exemption on the number of sports they would need to field basing the request on the travel subsidies needed to pay teams to play in Hawaii, the weakness of the current “13th game” as most conferences now have playoffs and cannot fit that game into a schedule and the cost for UH to travel to play.
So, with UH football, the ultimate bread winner in a downward motion and the projection of a $1 M shortfall (of the shortfall, how much of the $1 M comes from the travel subsidies to both MWC and BWC. If the total is about 1/2 M or 2/3 M, UH is pretty close, if they had no subsidy expense or the guarantee of a big name, end of the season 13th game at home), it may be just the excuse the AD could use to cut out some of the sports that don’t generate a revenue and weigh on the rest of the sports that could help the situation..for now (I believe that there is a minimum number a major has to have to play with the big boys) and see if they can get the exemption.
So, the AD cuts non-revenue generators at the moment, like men’s volleyball, tennis and golf). I don’t believe that we would adversely affect the “balance” on men’s to women’s equation.
With salaries for coaches, travel and the like UH could realize a small but ongoing saving going forward.
When things get better, they could then use the “extra” revenue to bolster the existing sports venues (Assistant coaches salaries, etc.).
Sounds cold-hearted, but it is after all a business and one should look at the overall situation to see what even a bad situation could offer as a potential opportunity to get better.
So, maybe an 0 – 8 season and no “13th” game so far may not be just a downer, but may give the AD just the excuse he was hoping for to better align the sports venues to fit his strategy.
I could all wrong as I don’t know squat about Title IX, what the rules are to be a DI member and how the NCAA rules are.
#41 Unfortunately, I can see the NCAA asking us to look in the mirror before asking for exemptions. We negotiated the travel subsidies, we declined a revenue generating 13th game this year (and haven’t taken full advantage of the exemption the last couple of years), and we gave our OC a season-long, paid vacation. . .
#41,42~With all the conference playoffs at the end of the year, we will never get a big name school, in a conference, to come here to play at the end of the year, for their 13th game. Maybe BYU or Notre Dame, who don’t belong to a conference would. That’s why I think we petition the NCAA to start our season a week earlier than the rest of the nation. Also, if we could make a deal with a conference to sent their 3rd place team here on the last game of the year for their 13th game. We could rotate conferences. What team and their fans, wouldn’t want to come to Hawaii in December?
#41. Excuse me but there are a certain number of sports we agreed to participate in (so correct me if I am wrong) and I believe this is the WCC or something like that). Now this is not the NCAA mind you. We asked for it, we got it! But Title IV still applies.
Once upon a time the NCAA was sympathetic to UofH because we were way out in the Pacific. A flight to the mainland was 9 1/2 hours. We had no live television and we only played in the local University-Armed Forces League. All this in spite of having electricity, paved roads, sidewalks and water toilets.
We can’t be going back to he NCAA for more sanctions (exclusion and special privilidges). Thing have changed over the years. This is now “modern Hawaii”. We have to stand up on our own merits and good standings. Now if you can’t stand the heat in the Kitchen, get out!

RainbowCliff- I use a UH logo Pareau – which may work for you. It has a couple pukas because it got caught on the seat at Aloha Stadium. I for it a couple years ago at Costco and will keep an eye out for another one for you.
You have to wonder, after the UH players used the Utah facilities the last 3 days, about what they are thinking about the difference between theirs and ours. I really would like to know what they would say, at least a few of them on camera.
Alex Smith forked out $500,000 to the University of Utah to help them. Maybe Isaac Sopoanga, Davonne Bess, Samson Satele, and some other UH alumni can donate $10,000 each.

48.. $10k per guy would be nice, but I wouldn’t hold it against them if they didn’t. Pro athletes tend to be horrible money managers, so they may not have $10k available. The 30 for 30 documentary about pro athlete money troubles was pretty eye opening. Lots of guys are literally broke when training camp starts (they don’t get paid in off season).
At least the basketball team is going to be good for the foreseeable future and I would expect revenue to bump up a little the next few years.
FIRST GAME IS FRIDAY as the Rainbow Classic tips off. I know it was just an exhibition, but UH scored 101 vs a pretty good BYU-H team.

Regarding the museums in DC, all of the museums under the Smithsonian umbrella are free as are most of the other exhibits on the Washington mall (under the national parks service). Beware however that there are many privately run museums (e.g. International Spy Museums) that are not free. In addition, some tour operators bundle free but otherwise hard to get tickets (e.g. walk up tickets for Bureau of Engraving) into packages that they sell. When I was last there in 2006, I tried getting up very early to stand in line for Bureau of Engraving tickets only to find tour operators hired homeless people to camp out in line overnight so they could snatch up the few walkup tickets distributed daily and bundle those free tickets into packages sold to tourist. Hopefully they’ve fixed that by now.

Wish I could know the true mood in the locker room. Do the players believe in themselves? Do they believe in the coaching staff? I think June Jones made a pretty good diagnosis in his miracle turn around year – the team needed to believe in themselves and their destiny as modern day Polynesian Warriors on the field. They responded to what the believed in, student athlete leaders stood up, coaches listened to what they had to say, and lives were changed forever. Coach Chow needs to find his own way to conquer the current day obstacles. The players need to recommit and make sure the whole world knows it.
Schroeder will be successful in whatever he does in the future (lawyer, doctor, business)….and I can see him donating money back to the program.

I love to hear SS talk and give interviews. He really is a stand up guy. At the same time, it bothers me, because it makes me feel bad for criticizing his play.
SS graduated Duke early… The dude is really smart and it takes a tremendous amount of work to earn a Bachelors in 3 years at any school. But he did it at Duke! He’s going to be a winner post football career.
I remember when JJ first took over. Team was not sure of what they were doing, QB’s included. Then things started to click, the “light” got turned on and the offense was all on the same page. I keep hoping for that day with this team.

UH should consider building a 30,000 seat stadium where Ching Field is. Something along the lines of FAU’s stadium, that has room to expand in the future. Save money in the long run in terms of revenue (parking, concessions, rental fees). It has to come from donations and fundraising with no public money. Never hurts to dream.
