Status checks
The Rainbow Warriors could learn as early as today the health statuses of several players.
Quarterback Taylor Graham (left shoulder), running back Joey Iosefa (left foot) and linebacker Julian Gener (right elbow) appear to have suffered the most serious injuries.
Tight end Harold Moleni and defensive ends Beau Yap and Iuta Tepa reportedly suffered concussions.
Although the Warriors are traveling today, it is considered to be an off day.
They will have meetings, conditioning sessions and a light practice tomorrow.

Time to heal and rest. Good morning gang.
Hawaii – Nevada
1st Downs 20 10
3rd down efficiency 9-19 9-17
4th down efficiency 0-3 0-0
Total Yards 376 340
Passing 243 202
Comp-Att 24-45 14-20
Yards per pass 5.4 10.1
Rushing 133 138
Rushing Attempts 36 44
Yards per rush 3.7 3.1
Penalties 10-75 6-55
Turnovers 6 1
Fumbles lost 2 1
Interceptions thrown 4 0
Possession 32:29 27:31
If you look at the head to head offensive stats Hawaii Offense had better production all the way around. What killed Hawaii was the 6 Turnovers that led to short field and points, add Taylor Graham was out in the second quarter and with all 3 of the back up QB getting playing time and turning over the ball. This game goes to Nevada defense lineman pressuring the Hawaii QB’s and getting Miovale out of position on holding and false start penalties along with the way to much 15 yard chop blocking penaties by Lakalaka that just stalled drives. Hawaii did a lot of shooting itself in the foot on defense, offense and special teams in this game.
In reality, Hawaii was lucky this wasn’t a bigger blowout with 6 Turnovers! Got to the Hawaii defense credit, Nevada could have scored 42 points off the turnovers alone and add TD and some FG, it could have been 55 to 9 blow out road loss! I’m sorry but Nevada defense line won this game by forcing Taylor Graham to run and get injured and pressuring all the back up QB’s into mistakes. It had nothing to do with Rolo’s low powered offense and was more about Nevada’s defensive line play. The offensive head to head numbers tell the story not what you perceive it to be because Hawaii lost the game.
Since Hawaii is going to lose to Fresno State next week by 70 points at home. No point in even debating about the Fresno game. With a healthy Taylor Graham with 4 games under his belt, I gave a shot to beat San Jose State at Aloha Stadium. Now, I don’t give Hawaii any shot with a injured Taylor Graham and if Chow plays SS and Higgins instead of Woolsey.
Now that we got a glimpse how all four QB played. And 3 of them each had 2 turnovers. In my opinion it’s #1 Taylor Graham (Solid Starter), then #2 Ikaika Woolsey (has the most upside with a Cannon Arm and mobility and is a freshman to build the future), then #3 Sean Schroeder, then #4 Jeremy Higgins after watching all four in live game play.
If Taylor Graham can’t play, it’s time for Chow to put in the big arm and mobile QB Ikaika Woolsey. We know what we are getting with SS and Higgins and thats good QB play but no big arm and some mobility but not enough to make a impact or get the repspect from opposing defenses. Woolsey is the best shot to move the inept offense with it’s young TE’s, WR’s and RB’s, and suspect O line play.
Chow has done this in the past in 2011 Utah when QB Jordan Wynn was out with a shoulder injury and backup QB John Hays a mobile QB with better than average arm was the starter. Chow game planned the offense to fit back up QB Jon Hays style of play. Watch the Utah vs Georgia Tech 2011 Sun Bowl to see how Chow did it.
Plus, Hawaii needs to take the Colorado game and the money, the Offense sucks okole right now and they need the live game reps badly, only live game reps will help this young Freshman and Sophmore laden team this and next season. I don’t expect Hawaii to make a bowl game this year, so the extra game will help to build depth on the roster for the 2014 season.
Good morning, Tsai-kos and Lurk-ers!
Wow, ST, this is an uber early post! 😉
Aloha kakahiaka. Imua Rainbow Warriors!!!
Get healed up soon to all of the injured Rainbow Warriors. UH needs to regroup as they are still 9/10 more games remaining.
It’s evident that Norm Chow needs an OC. Never thought I’d say this, but how about Chow swallowing his pride and making an offer to Nick Rolovich to return to UH? UH is not going to lure an experienced OC from some BCS school considering the low pay scale. I don’t know Rolovich, but he just may consider an offer to return to UH and Hawaii, given his connections here, not to mention that fact that he could put himself in position for the head coaching job someday. Hey, didn’t Dick Tomey try many times to hire a particular offensive coach at BYU to come to UH back in the 80s?
Before the haters come to the thread and my husband tells me no posting…I think we need to call a Kahuna. We need prayer, emotional healing and fans who send positive healing and support.
Go Warriors!
ST have you ever heard of the run out the clock rule? Yesterday’s Louisville game they used that rule. Please explain if you can?
No. 7: Get over this obsession with Rolovich. I didn’t see anything impressive in his offense nor was his offense credited with winning the game…look at the stats…geezus….Hawaii had better offensive stats than Nevada all the way around….what lost the game for Hawaii was its offensive line and the six turnovers…the offensive line is pathetic…they lack any skills plus their blocking assignments were way off….try focus on the offensive line for a couple of series and you can see that they are getting beat game in and game out….also, the six turnovers just killed Hawaii’s drives….so give me a damm break as Rolo’s offense or scheme had nothing to do with Hawaii losing yesterday and, if you check the game stats since the beginning of the season, Nevada’s offense hasn’t gone anywhere albeit they don’t have their starting QB and playing against better competition but in every game they have literally been shut down BADLY…geezus, UCLA shut down everything Nevada threw at them as it was embarrassing to watch that game…nothing more and othing less.
With the situations on offense, it’s a realistic possibility that the Rainbow Warriors will not win a single game this season. Scary!
Great Morning All!
Get home. Get healthy. Get some Bulldog.
Conference home opener. Come on Bows!
Pomai (or whoever),
56 – 14 d1shima
Hello, good morning! Rough game
And sorry I haven’t been here in a while. Had to yelp
Trust me…if Hawaii has a decent offensive line, the team will produce but for all you naysayers out there, please focus your binoculars on the offensive line on every series…..once again, as I said in the above blog, the line is just pathetic…..they are just getting beat in every phase and once they are pushed back, the QB has no chance of making his reads….I mean, just focus your attention to the offensive line and you will definitely see what I’m talking about….this offensive line needs more game experience and once it is synchronized in its blocking schemes etc….then things will turn out for the best…Trust me, the potential for the offense to really produce is out there but it REALLY STARTS WITH THE OFFENSIVE LINE…..and right now, that is where the weak spot is and opposing teams are taking advantage in mixing their defensive signals in confusing Hawaii’s offensive line…sometimes I have to just shake my head to see how our lineman are confused and just getting beat physically in the line play…IT IS BAD………
#7: Well, it’s evident that UH needs an OC and a capable one at that who can take some of the load off of the head coach. Chow has a lot on his plate. I give credit where its due and I grudgingly accept the fact the Nevada OC called a good game against UH, and with backup players.
I still support the program and just want them to be successful.
This coach might be interested in returning to Hawaii:
http://www.gowyo.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/jason_gesser_844460.html
The question is does his offensive philosophy match that of Chow’s?
On the other hand, Chow may have Jordan Wynn in mind to become the next OC, but there’s the experience factor.
No offense to Coach Chow but when is he going to stop with the, “It kills us,” Chow said of the injuries, adding, “We can’t use that as an excuse.”
If it’s not an excuse, stop saying it. It seems like a weekly statement…. And I know he also is going to say “were gonna work” …
Just getting old in my opinion. Not kind of things or adjustments I want to hear from a HC
Yes a difficult and painful game to watch. I still think there are many positives about this team and there are moments when they seem on the verge of getting it together. Yesterday seemed like a step backwards. But now the character of the coaches and players will be tested. Character is most easily seen under stress. When everything is going well it is easy to be graceful. As many of yesterday’s posts indicate true character emerges when things are difficult. Many of yesterday’s posts indicated a distinct lack of character by the posters. Yes it is painful to lose and even more painful to lose badly. It may be that this team will not gel in time for coach Chow to be retained. So far things don’t look so great. But to rejoice in the failure of others to elevate oneself exposes sickness not wisdom. I am disappointed by this team’s performance so far. I hoped yesterday they would demonstrate significant improvement when matched against a MWC peer. They did not. But the failure of the team pales in comparison to the pathetic display of hatred by some of the posters. At least the team has given their blood sweat and tears to the effort. The hateful ones’ only effort has been comfortably perching on their expansive okoles. Go warriors….don’t quit!
Pull Keenan Ewaliko off of his redshirt status.
The game is being replayed on OC16 at 6am this morning. Game just started.
I’m not so concerned with the Loss, it’s the injury to Taylor Graham that hurts the most. Very unnecessary to take those kinds of hits. Reminds me of RG3’s injury. Trying to do too much when you’re invaluable. Let’s be realistic and get behind TG. He’s the #1 at this point for a reason. His injury is just #!^*#% horrible.
Hope all the other injuries aren’t bad. Warriors, heal well.
Must fix some issues, but thank you for the effort, Warriors. The stats show improvement.
It’s unfortunate that penalties seemed one-sided. When the game score was already 9-31, Nevada had only 2 penalties for 15 yards and got some late catch-up penalties after that. UH had 9 for 60 yds at that point.
Tsai was on the pre-game show. Nice, ST. Glad Tomey is part of the team. He’s awesome. Speaks clearly. Excellent analysis of plays.
I agree with both Polymom and Whats up. Prayers are definitely needed and I too will disappear before all the haters show up. And I believe we have seen the future and its name is Ikaika Woolsey. I love Taylor but he seems to be wildly inaccurate at the worst times (e.g. the 2 yard pass on 4th down). Shroeder is a tough son of a guy but he is still too indecisive and continues to hold on to the ball too long and sacked (same as last year). Time to start building for the future. Woolsey has a gun and was the only one willing to throw the ball downfield to our underutilized big receivers even if he did get picked a couple of times. The defense was encouraging and I still believe Chow can get this thing turned around. And on a positive note how about Mr. St. Juste? Looking forward to watching him do his thing for the next few years.
Yes, Diocemy St. Juste is a player UH can definitely build around. He comes as advertised.
I won’t say it. It is what it is. Just waiting for chow to wrap up chow time so we can get a real hc.
#17 I agree with the view of your opinion of some of the posters. Really, it may be their wish answered if the UH decides that athletics is not worth the pain, emotionally, financially and the overall lack of community support.
This way the coaches and players would not see the “pathetic hatred” by these so called “fans” as all of these coaches and players would now be at some far away school where they would not be exposed to such ugliness. These folks would probably respond by, “no, we support the players, it the coaches we are aiming at.”.
I guess these same folks never played on a team as what is said to one is said to all. Teams work as a unit, even when parts of it fail to execute properly.
If this is what “supporting a team” is all about, maybe Hawaii does not need a team.
We are all disappointed with the outcome thus far, no doubt, but this is our team, all of it, players coaches, volunteers, all of it. I supported the team with Holmes, Price, Tomey, Wagner, Von Appen, JOnes, Mac and now Chow. I did not and do not agree with many of their methods, but they were and are in charge until a change is made, by either party. But the support for the team, the entire entity known as a team does not change.
You who say, well you’re drinking the kool-aid, yes I am and most of us are. WE drink the kool aid that supports a whole team, not only the parts we like and go “hating” the parts you hate. That is not supporting a team.
Good Sunday Greetings Folks!
Praying our Rainbow Warriors will heal both physically and spiritually!
Rest, Recover, Regroup!
GO BOWS!
I must say that I thought the team was way better than what they showed yesterday. That was a disappointing performance.
I had no idea that Woolsey had that kind of a cannon. He seems to throw the nicest passes on the team, they just went to the wrong team. I am assuming that is a result of pressing and nerves.
We does everyone want to see replace Graham should he be out for an extended time?
Schroeder = most game experience but jittery under pressure IMO
Higgins = some experience; sometimes seems to have “it,” other times not
Woolsey = raw and inexperienced; cannon arm; mobile; possibly the future QB and could use the experience
My vote would be for Woolsey. Maybe he can give us a read option look too.
btw . . . I hope today’s blog remains free of insult (though I doubt it. Last night was a little ridiculous.
It’s not that bad. I can still remember back in 1976, UH under Larry Price was losing to Nebraska by something like 63-3. Tom Osborne and his staff decided to put one of their 280 lb. defensive lineman, an All-American, at defensive back in the waning moments of the game. Still remember the Nebraska players and coaches laughing their heads off.
The haters are the same people over and over and over. On most boards they would be gone for spamming…. repeating the same point over and over an over….
Sorry, that should say “who” does everyone want to see at QB if Graham is out.
Woolsey had his chance and threw to the wrong team. He has shown us nothing and deserves to stay on the bench. If Chow doesn’t start Higgins, then bench all the quarterbacks we have on the team and just run the wildcat with Diocemy St. Juste.
Looking at the stats is deceiving. Chow was great at moving the ball between the twenties which padded the numbers. The game has moved beyond time of possession and number of first downs to running and passing in space for big plays. Most of the turn overs occurred after the game was out of reach. Nevada was no excuses the better team and the only excuse fans will accept from Chow is he didn’t have his team prepared as they should have been.
Heal Warriors. All I know is that we got a gem at runningback.
Morning, Gang!
Wait… the sun is so bright this morning… let me slide those curtains over a little.
Wasn’t a good show. Just gotta keep working at it. No give up.
Heal up, our Wounded Warriorz!
Next week, another big game coming up. Let’s get back to work.
Have a great day, everyone!
Coach needs to make a decision pick and stick with an oline already. Can’t keep flipping players around. They more than anyone need game reps as a unit. JJ used to have his oline set coming out of spring camp.
One positive that should come from these challenges is a recognition by UH that high ticket prices, pay-per-view, and high priced inner circle parking is damaging to building a long term fan base that will go to games in good times and bad. Ticket prices are $25-$40 for adults, $22 for seniors (65+), and $20 for students (4-18). Pay-Per-View for the season is $450 on Oahu. Inner circle parking is no longer available to general public fans for tailgating in the shade.
Supply and demand is alleged to work both ways, not just to boost prices when times are good. Let’s see a return of the Rainbow Warriors to public TV. Let’s see some $5 and $10 football tickets. And let’s see inner circle parking open to the general public for $10.
fresno st looked very good against boise st friday night. fresno st should be ranked in both top 25 major polls today. looking forward to inner circle tailgating and attending the game this saturday.
Chow would have run his offense with Rolo here. Rolo would have given Chow a really good quarterback coach. This is why Ault hired him. He wanted Rolo to coach up his qbs. Ault also ran his own offense.
Independent Thinker . . .
Are you trying to tell me that Higgins played well yesterday? His first pass should have been intercepted. It went straight into the hands of a defender. Then he had very nonchalant ball control while taking a sack and fumbled giving up a defensive touchdown.
redzone . . .
I agree. It would have been mutually beneficial for Rolo and Chow.
The first thing I want my quarterback to do is to protect the football. Nevada did a better job.
To all you naysayers……focus your attention on the offensive line and read my blogs #9 & #13 and then formulate your opinions and don’t be one dimensional and only focus on the QB and skill positions…it starts with the offensive line and if you were there or watching the game, you should have focus your attention on the offensive line and then you will see where the problem lies in the offense….geezus, it has nothing to do with bringing back Rolo as o.c. as it had nothing to do with Nevada’s offense….don’t be one-sided but be open minded in the whole scheme of things and if any of you naysayers played football then next time focus on the offensive line and then you will know why the QB’s are having a difficult time……..plez don’t give me this garbage about Rolo’s offense because his offense has been pathetic against other teams and whatever offense or schemes Rolo tried to run against UCLA, it was SMOTHERED and it was embarrassing to watch…..Rolo hasn’t shown me anything and i have been watching every Nevada game this season……
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
hossana . . .
Calm down a little bit. I don’t think it is only the QB position either. Of course there are oline issues. Regarding your Rolo comments, I think he would be good within Chow’s offense because of what he would bring in terms of creativity with the pass game. I’m not saying run Rolo’s offense.
The problem with the way some people debate is that they feel the need to attack when they write, assuming that their opinions and insights are far superior than others. Go easy.
Most of the grumbling here is about the O-line. Go back a few years and consider why Wagner and Jones went with “gimmick” offenses. They said that they couldn’t get good size O linemen here in Hawaii and couldn’t recruit the type of O-linemen to come here that was suited for the “pro style” offense. I guess history is repeating itself. I like that coach Chow is trying to recruit the best players and are having some success but we have to remember that this is very early in only his 2nd year and he had a late start in his 1st year. Maybe we are spoiled by the high flying offense of the Wagner and Jones’ years and have become impatient. It’s hard to watch at times but we still have to support. Go Warriors!
Rolo needed to think about his own growth. He didn’t need to stunt it by working for Chow. Our problems run far deeper than qb.
Still bowl eligible. Polymom, keep dreaming.
41.
Good points but Chow has more yards than Nevada. The oline must have been doing something right.
Graham and SS don’t do the oline any favors with their footwork. Higgins showed the best footwork by sliding into the pocket giving himself more time. Woolsey’s footwork also showed promise.
The St. Louis connection stays together.
As long as St. Juste and Lakalaka can stay healthy, RBs starting to shape up nicely. Lakalaka much improved from HS days. Hopefully Faga and Joey can back healthy soon too.

It was one sad game yesterday – injuries, turnovers and more injuries!!! Sigh! But I will NEVER GIVE UP ON MY TEAM….NEVER!!!!
To much negative blah blah blah.
Blame Chow, like he is the one blocking
for the o line, throwing Interceptions and
causing all the penalty calls.
Mahalo to all the positive bloggers!
I’ve lurked here for the last time,
too much negative blah blah
Support the team,beat Fresno!
Aloha!!!!
Imua Warriors!
The rainbow warriors are entering dangerous territory. This is quite possibly the most important COACHING moments of the season. Your team’s psychological factor is about to go kaput. The No Fajardo Nevada game supposedly had a potential to turn the tides on the Chow era. Well, that went down the drain real quickly. A one or zero win season is not beyond the realm of possibilities. May the good gods have mercy on us.
Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.
BIK
Besides the defense I think the running backs looked real good. Receivers and qb need more work.
It doesn’t help chow that he brought his “a” team to play nevada’s “c” team.
It’s an inside job!
Holding penalties kill drives. They really got to fix this.
I said it a couple times yesterday and i wanna say this one more time I LOVED WATCHING ST Juste. Woosley looks to have a good upside i like his footwork. As disciplined as i said UH was the first 2 games it backfired this game.
I know everyone is saying the oline did horrible but i thought the run blocking improved to me.
Woosley just needs reps, schroder needs to learn to pull the trigger faster he makes the proper reads but he hesitates
Being constructive…. What options does Naeole have right now?
Afusia, Lefotu, Milovale, have been really bad. Shigematsu hasn’t been good. Clarke and Griffin have been ok.
I believe Wa’a is redshirting, and it’s not worth wasting a redshirt at this point of the year. Any news on Leo Kolamantangi’s status?
There are a handful of young OL that were brought in this past class, but they may not be physically ready yet or are redshirting.
speaking of redshirts . . . Iosefa? Is he eligible for a medical redshirt?
Don’t worry guy’s we got your back, don’t give up and keep the faith. As long as you keep trying. Don’t listen to the negative jackasses.
I liked wa’a and i honestly think having him redshirt is better for the future
Is it possible to red shirt Wily?
Rolo, Miano, Lee etc. If any one thinks they would leave their team today to join the UH, I would wonder what they are smoking. They may have loyalty to Hawaii but they are not going to abandon their team in the midst of their season.
When the season began, I think everyone expected Hawaii to lose at least the first five games. We had hopes that it would not be so, but the expectation was losing the first five games with the hope that we would improve (more or less) game by game; that the offensive and defensive lines would jell; that the QBs would find their way in a college setting; that our freshman backs would start to be D1 players.
Howzit Everybody,
Another tough one. We had a chance all the way until that last fumble. We need to settle on one group of o-linemen and one group of receivers. We need to build cohesion within the offense and get solid reps. I also feel optimistic about where this team can be but it will take a lot of work cause right now it is just a mess.
In regards to the QB situation, I also feel that Woolsey maybe the best all around QB we have. Very live arm with good touch. He has the mobility to move around and still throw the ball on a rope. Has great rotation on his throws. Oh and he does remind me of Bryant Moniz. But right now as it stands I don’t feel we have a D-1 ready QB. Graham came in with a lot of accolades but at this point just has not shown very well. Do I think he still has a chance. Of course, everyone has a chance. In regards to Schroeder, I think his time has come and gone. It just looks like his mechanics have just gone down the drain. All I saw most of the time was him dropping his release point which in turn caused him to throw the ball right into jumping line men. Also again the line did not help at all either. And of course Mr. Higgins. You know I think this kid is a great kid but he is just not a D-1 QB. Yes his footwork is pretty decent and yes his pocket presence is ok but besides that, his throwing motion is horrible, his arm strength has a whole bunch to be desired, and as a defense you know where he is going with the ball because he telegraphs every pass because of his throwing motion. In closing I think it will be another long season because none of these QB’s as of now are ready for big time college let alone MW competition. JMO
I know this is random but wonder if they would consider putting Colt on OC sports pre game with Nate iloa them
I know this is random but wonder if they would consider putting Colt on OC sports pre game with Nate iloa them
I also would like to give props to the o-line for their run blocking. If they could only dominate on their pass pro’s as they do on their run blocking, we would have something to work with. Again with that it takes a lot of work and something called communication. Communication more than anything on pass protection is the difference between a great o-line and a horrible o-line and right now I think the lack of communication is killing us in picking up defenders.
Some of you need to realize (Independent Thinker for one) that Higgins/Schroeder has the same problem that Moniz had, the defense will play up and just take away the to short to medium routes and dare him to throw the deep ball, since Higgins/Schroeder doesnt have the big arm or the speed like Ikaika Woosley. Thats how Moniz got neutralized in many games and because of that Moniz had to run his okole off to get yardage, even when the deep man was open. I got to give to Moniz the man had some wheels and was a pretty fast QB.
Thats what I see in Ikaika a Moniz type speedster with a cannon arm that has no problem throwing the deep ball. Woosley is just a Freshman and very little experience at the FBS level. What I saw yesterday was Ikaika has the velocity and arm strength to get the ball to the receivers in a hurry and he can throw the deep ball. But has just a little to much faith he get force a pass to his receivers, which he got picked off. He will learn the timing of the WR and the game speed will slow down with more live game reps with the 1st team.
But this is only of Taylor Graham is unable to play and Chow has to put in one of the back up QB’s. Then Ikaika Woosley is the best choice because all 3 of them played and all 3 of them had 2 turnovers. And all three of them showed they can potientially run the offense but as far as upside goes. Ikaika has more because of what I stated earlier.
The two groups I’m excited about on offense is our RB’s and TE’s. These two position have done nothing but get better throughout the season. With St. Juste, Lakalaka, Iosefa, and Wily we have a solid stable of guys that all have different styles of getting things done. With St. Juste I see an every down back if he can work on his pass protection. With St. Juste and Lakalaka we have a solid one two punch.
In regards to the TE’s, I think they need to be utilized even more within the offense. With Clark, Moleni, and Puu-Robinson I also feel that we have a great complement of talent here. I just feel that these guys need to get the ball a lot more off of bootlegs and play-action under the defense in the flats. This is one group that could turn our season around if given the chance.
I actually think that if Woolsey can get more reps in practice and maybe ascend to #2, I think he may have an outside chance to start next year and if not next year it will be a pretty intense competition with him, Tui, and Zwahlen. Man that right there would be a solid three man depth chart.
to all would be coaches: what is the best plan to insure that the 3rd and 4th string QB be ready for actual game when the 1st and 2nd goes down to injuries? What did Reno do to have their 3rd string “red shirt” frosh be game ready, and he did look game ready IMHO, to execute the plays like a “vet”? so much emphasis at UH is given to #1 and little to #2.
why is the OLine playing like it did in 2012 by missed blocking assignment or allowing their DL opponent to break through to the QB? coaching or players not up to the task?
why are the receivers dropping so many “catchable” passes or running the wrong route, etc?
why does UH get more penalties called against them vs other teams – several Reno DL players actually tackled UH OL with the “official” not more than 15″ away and never called for holding? so, if you’re a Reno OL, you keep doing the same until the official calls you for holding
how critical is mental discipline by all players to executing their assignments in a game? is this stressed by the coaches? how often? do the players really care?
I never played or coached the game, but I was a very good Intelligence and Operations officer in the Army who had the responsibility of producing plans and “bios” of the top enemy officers including all their likes/dislikes, education, tendencies, and capabilities/weaknesses to brief the general staff and to develop strategies to counter the enemies plans and do “future planning” including which units are best suited to accomplish the mission.
How well versed is a football coach in this area?
Oh and not only that but in those three QB’s, you not only have solid arms but you have QB’s that can move and move pretty quickly. Man salivating on what could be come 2015. Until then we just gotta keep developing what we have.
Chow needs to get some coaching tips from my St,Louis Crusaders coaching staff. they can show him how to run a offense instead of his 3 and punt system.
I think Chow needs to accelerate Woosley’s development and elevate him to the #3 or maybe #2 so he can get reps during the week, especially if Graham is going to miss some time. Chow should get him more live reps during garbage time during blowouts so he can get used to the speed of the game. He got a rude awakening yesterday in his D1 debut, as he was thrown in the fire with no game prep. I like his quick trigger and he has a quality arm. It just looked like he had made up his mind where he was throwing before the snap on the interceptions. Once he settles in, he will look better.
Schroeder and Higgins were the #2&3 based off experience as they both played last year. It’s painfully clear that Schroeder and Higgins aren’t going to be the guys present or future.
Also, probably best for Chow to hire a new OC (one that won’t do anything stupid to get fired) and hand off the play calling duties to him. I think Chow’s got too much on his plate to handle all the duties he’s having to handle. But that can’t happen until the offseason…
Don’t know about yesterday but,………How ‘Bout Dem Cowboys!
Finally got to see a replay of a game. Caught the game with the score 24-9 early in the 3rd Q. Didn’t get to see St. Juste but Lakalaka looked good.
We made a laundry list of errors on offense, both physical and mental, to have any kind of consistancy. It’s easy to see why there are a lot of people venting their disappointment.
A-House,
How you. Anyway to help very little because I am a defensive coach. I will tell you that in order to be game ready on the offensive side it takes a lot of rep time. Like JJ use to do, he would have guys throwing hundreds of balls a day to guys and have the receivers running routes for days until they got it right. That I feel is the best way to get cohesion between the Qb’s and receivers. In my opinion, the only person that should have mental reps is probably the 4th stringer. If one guy goes down than the 4th stringer gets the 3rd stringers reps. In regards to the O-line, as I side earlier I feel that a lot of it has to do with communication. Each guy needs to know what the other is doing. Each guy has to read the defense and find potential blitzes and where it is coming from. Each needs to be able to make post snap adjustments on the fly and the only way you do that is by communicating your inside and outside calls. Oh and of course you need guys that are mobile.
In regards to the mental part of the game, I think that part of the game can only help. It helps cause you can pick up tendencies on how a player likes to play certain things or how a player reacts to certain things. Of course when you get on the field it’s all about playing the game but if you can pick anything during film sessions, it can only help.
You know the way I see it is you don’t have to be a coach to understand that any sport is about repetition and the only way to get better at what your doing is to keep doing it until you get it right. It is just like a job, you won’t get it totally right the first time you do it but with time and experience you then are expected to do it right. The only thing that a coach has over just a regular fan is the understanding of schemes and techniques.
I hope I was able to help with the very little I know about the offensive side of the ball. You ask me about the defensive side of the ball I can write a book about it. Nah just joke.
74.. All #1 QBs get the vast majority of practice reps. Backup QBs don’t get many Reps in practice simply because there isn’t time to give them many reps. NCAA practice limits force this. This is fact at all football teams. Also, NFL backup QBs get very limited reps in practice and they don’t have practice limitations like in college.
Also, coaches can’t spend a ton of time with backups because they are also working on their weekly game plans. As offenses have gotten more complex, the 1st team needs as many reps as possible to be sure they have the maximum playbook available. It is impossible to plan around injuries, nor would it be a productive use of the limited practice time available.
The critics say, “look at how good Stewart looked as the #3.”
He looked good because the Nevada coaching staff had him practicing with the starters all week and formed a gameplan to cater to his lack of experience. They knew as early as last Sunday, that Combs and Fajardo wouldn’t play and Stewart was going to start. They kept Fajardo’s status as a mystery to make it tougher to plan for them.
79… Saint Juste was electric. He’s legit. With Iosefa out again, St Juste and Lakalaka are going to be the guys.
Have to wait and see St Juste’s injury status, he didn’t play 2nd half and was limping around on sideline. Hopefully it’s minor.
Now that I have calmed down and watched the replay until the graham went down. A couple things i noticed
1)Graham actually had some time to throw and the line didnt look too bad. its just when he extended plays and didnt slide he took some blows.
2)Graham is just too inconsistent. easy passes thrown too high and not very accurate and takes to long to get the ball out
3)st. juste looked amazing!
The thing that I take away from these first three games is we had our chances. We where in the games for most of those games. We where at point that if we made one play or another, we could have won those games. Whether people think it’s the coaching or the players or whatever else people out there think it is. We still had a chance to be three and 0. Though of course we are not, we do have some things to look forward to but a whole lot more work to do.
Oh and yes I also feel that Chow needs someone to take the reins of the offense so that he can take care of the team.
Chow knows offense– almost every offense in college, and especially the NFL, and even the “new” offenses use principals developed by Chow and others at BYU.
As it turns out, though, his strength is as an offensive coordinator, scheming and calling plays from the booth. He is not a teacher or position coach working coach to player. Not only is this not his skill, he is doing too much and he is taking himself away from his role as coordinator.
Chow’s teams will not improve until he finds experienced offensive coaches that can teach the offense to the players so they can execute it flawlessly– that is not player talent, that is how well coached a team is on all the fundamentals and the playbook. He needs coaches that know their stuff and can do the one on one interaction and teaching of the players. He “fired” his last batch of offensive coaches, but the replacements are no better. He needs coaches that can teach what he knows and wants the team to do. Without this, the team will never reach our and Chow’s expectation. They will keep making more and more of the mistakes they are making now.
Aldon Smith just got a sack… Time for him to smoke out while the offense is on the field.
Manoa2 #85,
I kind of agree with you on this. Chow has shown that he is not able to do everything within the offense and also be OC and HC. Here’s where I disagree, I think we have very capable young coaches coaching the positions that have played within the offense and have game experience within the offense. Remember game experience is something that is very powerful because you can explain what you are looking at and looking for during live fire. I think the only problem here is Chow just needs to trust in his people and let them coach up these position. I also think again that he needs to bring in an OC to help in the scheming and to be the eye in the sky. But the biggest and I say biggest thing that Coach Chow needs to do is put aside his ego and start to trust in his people on his offensive coaching staff. That’s what will turn this thing around.
FUHA i believe aldon smith is out and Justin smith got the sack
@77 completely agree with you on that woosley i think will be a great qb in the future but just needs game experience
It took you guys to reach that conclusion after he fired price?
#86
i thought the san jose pd took his stash
3 games
You have to be brain dead to think chow can be both oc and hc and do a good job at both.
85… These are the growing pains associated with rebuilding a program. People seem to underestimate how poorly Mack recruited. Any team that goes from a winning program to a losing program is rooted in recruiting. Recruiting classes are the future of the program, you don’t get many freshmen making an impact on football team unless the talent is weak ahead of him. Recruiting classes don’t really play big role in the starters until the 3rd year.
Also, the RnS was a system required a specialized personnel group to operate. Those types of players don’t work in a pro style offense. UH is still processing through the roster transition. It doesn’t happen in one or two years 99% of the time when there’s a total system change. Year three is when we will see if Chow’s system will work and progress will be expected. He has brought in a very nice class of freshmen this past offseason and the building list of commits is strong for 2014.
Recruiting classes are the future, the current roster reflects the past 4 years of recruiting.
The 2010 co-WAC champ season which was Mack’s only good year on the field, was loaded with seniors and RS juniors from JJ’s last recruiting class (Salas, Pilares & Bradley were the SR impact players). Mack replaced those 3 with Orstrowski, Stutzman and Clapp. Royce Pollard was the lone holdover that year. That’s an enormous drop off in talent.
Tracking top line talent, Mack has only been able get 1 player come though UH and make a NFL roster (Alex Green). Aaron Brown was cut and not on a roster as a late round pick last year. Both of which were JC transfers. Mack has zero prep recruits in four recruiting classes that look like a pro prospect.
Jones consistently had a few guys making NFL rosters each year. Chow appears to have some potential NFL bodies in his first class (JG-W & M Jackson).
IT, are you still on Higgins nuts? Sadly, but that is reason you have lost all credibility with your posts. Not that I care that all of your postings are so unbelievably biased.. Frankly, it’s no wonder that not a single person here has your back. And when you keep riding Higgins, it’s simply your own doing.. Higgins HAD his chance! Now get off his nuts and move on! What a sorry life you lead. It’d make some sense if you were related to the guy but again, aren’t you just an embarrassment to the guy with the things that you say? For that reason, I HOPE you’re not related to him. He deserves better than you.
#94
Sick and tired of hearing you blame Coach Mack for Coach Chows problems. Knock off with the lame excuses.
Hope that all them Warriors heal up fast!
Regarding the coaching staff, the defensive side looks to be working well under Kaumeyer’s leadership.
I think its totally fair to be concerned about the offensive side though. How the WR and QB coaching and OC duties and HC duties are shared between Chow and 2 grad assistants leaves me wondering if its just too much for them.
I’m sure the 2 GA’s are wonderfully talented guys with a long career ahead of them. However, I don’t know if they have the coaching experience necessary to coach those key positions.
In the upcoming off-season NC is going to have to find and stick with an OC with a offensive system that compliments our players. This issues needs to be figured out. I’m hopeful it will happen.
So we practiced all season in the shotgun, yesterday we saw a hell of a lot of under center.
I just thought that was interesting.
If the team was short on talent, Chow should have recruited even heavier from the JuCos. That he didn’t, is his short-coming. He had two recruiting seasons for his system. Blaming Mac, doesn’t cut it. The thing is, while I haven’t seen improvement on the offense, there has been improvement on the Defense and special teams, so can we credit Mack for that? The areas where Chow is coach are ailing. QBs that get the least reps are Mack recruits, the 1st and 2nd are Chow’s…
I just want to see improvement on offense..
Not this:
from Sportsbow at Sportshawaii:
iwwthm . . .
I think I read somewhere that Graham feels more comfortable under center.
Sorry..I got those stats from a Sportsbow entry on Scout.com not Sportshawaii.com
So……Are we playing Colorado?
FUHA no prep recruits that could make NFL rosters?? JHT could make it alone for his special teams play, Art Laurel, Ben clarke, Beau Yap, Tavita Woodard, Moses Samia, Saisau Matageise. I would have thrown Bill ray stuts, Trevor davis and blake miur in the possible mix but since billy ray is being shown the david graves treatment this year and the other 2 have left.
Lots of blame to go around. What good does that do? None whatsoever.
Let’s hope these boys heal up & continue to improve…..quickly.
I think the blood was in the water & the sharks came to feed after the game yesterday. Quite a bit of frustration from the fans & fake fans. Some of it is understandable as before the season the general consensus was starting 0-5. After some quality defensive play & a wounded Nevada team coming up, some(including myself) thought this could be the turning point. The O started off well, scoring on the first drive. The D was somewhat of a let down while the game was yet to be decided. With the way the O has struggled, the D cannot keep giving up big 3rd down conversions. That has really killed us all season.
We have some nice young player & the sooner they can get it together, the sooner better results will come.
IMUA Warriors! See you Saturday.
Per Dave Reardon: “Norm Chow weighing whether to add Colorado game. AD Ben Jay said they discussed pros and cons this a.m., decision to be announced tonight.”
One con that I see is Warriors are riddled with injuries from this past weekend, and depth might be a problem with giving up a bye week. Obvious pro would be money
Lil Billy lied about his accident. He did not “fall asleep”. What’s so hard to understand?
TG and SS have shown us what they have and it’s not enough, they both take too long going through their progressions and just aren’t that good.
Im not sure what happened to billy on that day from what i heard he passed out due to a medical thing after a work out. And if there is no police report or anything why is he being punished??
I said it once and many times that the blogs by FORMER UH ATHLETE (#94 in today’s blog) always gives very adept perspective and insight as to why UH is struggling and his comments on the recruiting of the former coach with what Chow had to deal with is precisely very perceptive and insightful….to be honest, I always look forward in reading Former UH Athlete’s comments because it is so objective and seems to hit the right buttons all the time….his blog takes a very objective look at why things are the way they are and, for me, it is much appreciated……because it gives me an insight into the present problems of the team.
Faga Wily still eligible for medical redshirt…..since he missed the Nevada game recovering from concussion suffered in scrimmage…….provided that he doesn’t play the rest of the season.
Leo Koloamatangi played against SC…..and traveled to Corvallis and Reno and played special teams.
Shoulda offered Stewart…..when he tripped to UH.
Didn’t realize Stewart made an official visit to UH.
71 degrees in Reno right now. Would have been game time. Our team needs a blessing. So cold yesterday.
And windy, too.
Jeezy, do you think Ewaliko deserve a look to get some reps? My personal opinion, Graham doesn’t have to poise to make critical plays (esp. third downs). Schroeder bless his heart holds the ball too long. When he takes a 3 step drop he’s doesn’t have much time to get rid of the ball. Yet, he tends to hesitate and the DL is on him to either sack him or swat the ball away causing an interception. He and Higgins don’t have enough arm strength to scare any DBs. Higgins looks like he has small hands to grip the football.
Woosley needs a lot of reps, but to me he had the best arm and if I was Chow I would give him more practice time for sure this week.
We have to play better and win some games. It’s time to see what people can do. Quarterback is obviously the most glaring weakness on this team. Too bad Graham got hurt, and I hope he’s okay. It’s a tall order to play Fresno St. this coming week. It won’t be pretty. I think we can look at a big time blowout, something like 66-10. Fresno St. can score very quickly and in big chunks of yardage. At the rate we turn the ball over, it will be ugly. It’s hard to imagine winning some games, any one game. I think we will be underdogs in every game this year, even Army.
QB ? – no need QB.
J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS are 2-1
ai yah
Santa Clara 49ers 7, Colts 27
RED ZONE – your idea is a great one …
” … I have always thought that coach Chow should have talked to coach Tomey. Make Tomey the sideline manager on game day so that he could go up and do his thing in the booth. … “
Hiring Tomey …
Emergency hire, 89 days duration; one day break, then another 89 days or less.
Classy coaching by Washington and Idaho State … 56-0 might not sound like it, but Washington put the second string at the half (compared to 73-7 against Nebraska in 2012) …
“Idaho State coach Mike Kramer was appreciative of how Washington handled the blowout.
“I applaud Coach Sarkisian and the entire Husky organization for making sure that we didn’t come out of it as badly humbled as we were last year at Nebraska,” Kramer said. “So I’m very, very grateful.” ”

@ 120 … still remembering 2011 season when special team coaching couldn’t deliver game winning field goals
Can’t stand when a player transfers to be closer to home but ends up going to school in a completely different state…especially when the reason for the transfer was supposedly involving family
RE: #119 & 120
ai-eee-soos — that’s an idea that makes me think “hmmmm….”, Tomey’s credentials and credibility as a “sideline manager” is certainly there. But is there any interest in both directions?
CHOW SUCKS! I’M SMART! PAY ATTENTION TO ME!
#122 – yup, I remembered that too. But I think he can help, if as noted in #124.
T bone golojuch jr is at it again.
#124 & #126 – I am not necessarily against it. If it can help, I am all for it. I never understood why extra points and field goals all of a sudden became almost impossible, and may well have come to the wrong conclusion about the cause.
T bone golojuch jr, I know you have a special obsession with me, and I can’t help it that you putt from the rough, but please understand that it will never work out between you and me. Assemble your weapon and continue.
When Mack hired Tomey, their offensive play became ultra conservative and boring. His special teams weren’t special at all.
What is there to discuss about the Colorado game?? I posted this earlier, UH needs the money, the Offense sucks okole right now and they need the live game reps badly, only live game reps will help this young Freshman and Sophmore laden team this and next season. I don’t expect Hawaii to make a bowl game this year, so the extra game will help to build depth on the roster for the 2014 season. If they turn down the Colorado game, Ben Jay and Chow need to have both of there heads examined.
Hawaii fans need to have their heads examined, especially T bone golojuch jr, for not hanging on my every word.
# 128. “I hear you.”
my “take” … too much thinking, over coaching, …
including punts & k.o.
HELL – just kick the damn ball …
#115 – Our team needs a blessing? It needs more of a Jesus comes back down to Earth miracle. Get ready for this weekend, Fresno has a least got to be a 40 point favorite.
UH football will be a joke until the University of Hawaii actually pulls their head out of the sand and hires a coaching staff that hasn’t been proved a loser already. Take a chance on someone young, that isn’t in the “good ole boy” network that runs this great state and University.
#131 – Don’t expect UH to make a bowl game? I would agree, how about baby steps, just COMPETE in one game. Don’t even have to win, just COMPETE!
Hey guys,
I just want to apologize for feeding the trolls last night… I’ll try to ignore them for the sake of the blog… I just lost my temper last night…
I just want to point out potential recruits will find this blog… Just like parents of current players find this blog… If you are constantly posting negative posts, it only hurts our program… If you think its a game to just post something negative to serve some contrarian point of view… It hurts us…
Colorado Buff head coach Mike MacIntyre was the SJSU head coach. MacIntyre took over for retired SJSU head coach Dick Tomey after a 2-10 2009 season. MacIntyre inherited a 2-10 team from Tomey and in 3 years took them to a bowl victory before moving on to take the Colorado Head Coach job.
At SJSU Mike MacIntyre record
2010 season 1-11
2011 season 5-7
2012 season 10-2
This is a example of how a program should progress with a head coaching change and roster turnover. Notice that year 3 the young recruits are starting to play at high level. This is what we should expect from Chow in year three a bowl game victory.
#137 Yea, but Chow’s records isn’t improving. Fire him now…. The team isn’t even getting better, albeit the defense has improved.
McDonalds doesn’t have to worry about spending too much for touchdowns.
Until coach Chow finds an OC, (which will not be this season), he should call the plays from the booth. It would only enhance both the offense and defense.
I know I’ve stated this a couple of times before, but I really believe it would help generate some better play calling on both sides of the line. Coach Chow has been very successful in the booth…why not the remaining of this season?
Imua Rainbow Warriors!!!
116. I do think Ewaliko should get a look. However, I feel it might be too late to install the correct packages for him to succeed this year. Ewaliko would not be able to run the current UH pro style offense. He would need to be used in some sort of pistol or spread that would enable him to get the ball and space with the option to get St Juste the ball and other play makers.
If they worked on some packages over the fall then yeah I would see what he can do for us. We can’t block so might as well get our best athletes out there to account for more runners. Ewaliko is capable of throwing intermediate passes.
I just dont see it happening.
Based on what I have seen, I don’t think our offensive coaches are capable of putting any sort of game plan for any of our guys to succeed though to be honest. In the Mack and Jones era, at no point were our offenses this bad even when we had to go to back ups or walk on players.
Amen jeezy!!
At least we’re not the NY Giants.
Some thoughts. Why are we having poor play from QBs, even with the mechanics, timing, and reads, etc. when Chow is supposed to be a QB guru coach?
Why is UH coming out after a competitive first half and imploding in the second? Every team makes adjustments and we have seen many UH teams play better in the second half to win. Is this a sign of poor coaching/strategy?
What is the problem with the O line? The size is there. Is it skill or lack thereof?
How can we have two weeks of preparation, have a fairly healthy roster, and still end up playing so poorly?
In other words, there’s not much hope to have any chance of the offense scoring close to 24-30 points. And in other words, if we can’t score enough in the offensive happy Mountain West we are not going to win, period. Do we dare say Bottom 10????
If these guys would only get their priorities straight, think of the jacuzzi and weight room possibilities 🙂

that offense sucks…half the oregon st score came from the defense.
so the offense has had 2 successful drives resulting in td’s for 13 points and a last minute bomb in 3 games.
dont be surprised if pick6 makes an appearance against fresno.
# 144. yup.
o-line problems- ask Eli Manning
7 sacks, 60 yards rushing.
Giants 0; Panthers 38
Derek, just look at the numbers of the players coach chow has coached over the past 5 seasons.
Jordan Wynn , John Hays, Kevin craft, Richard brehaut, Kevin prince all struggled in the same system and all were highly recruited qbs. At some point, u have to look at the offense if guys are constantly failing.
It’s clear you would need nfl caliber qbs with NFL caliber weapons and o line for this system to stand a chance ..
Under June and rolo, walk on qbs and wrs succeeded .. When moniz went down , Shane Austin was capable of running the offense … We had years that players like Jason wieldon, Shawn withy Allen, and other back ups that were capable of having success in the offense.. This current offense is putting all of our qbs at a high rate of failure and other mwc coaches are probably laughing… U could tell by the Nevada play calling that Nevada was content running the ball and punting to our offense once they had a 2 score lead
Hope the wounded Warriors heal up soon. Praying for the guys. Tsigh.
Rolo demonstrated that he could take a redshirt freshman, with 1 just one week of 1st team snaps, and have him produce well enough to complete 70% of his passes, 3 for touchdowns and move the team close enough for a first quarter FG.
Pollian demonstrated that his defense could produce fumbles and anticipate Hawaii’s passing routes enough to get 6 turnovers. 1 or 2 might be accidental, but six, is great Defense.
Imagine Woolsey in the RnS. Whoa!
RBs gonna have to practice their pass pro……and avoid resorting to the “chop block”.
Will the Coach’s ego and conservatism doom UH to a second losing season?
This has nothing to do with recruiting or turnovers or dropping balls, etc. Will the “tunnel vision” pro-style offense keep UH from winning seasons? Can the coaches recruit the necessary players to make the “pro-style” successful?
If you want a big, strong armed, slow feet QB for the pro-style ofense, why recruit QB like Woosley and Zwahlen? Both can scramble, have strong arms, and can run.
Coaches and players come and go, but the constant is the fans who continue to support football and die many times over when we lose.
Woolsey is Mack recruit.
Zwahlen’s father played for Chow and came to see practice one day.
Congrats to the Soccer Rainbow Wahine who beat NAU. These ladies have grit. They have key players who are injured and got beat up by Arizona but fought back today to get a win in overtime.
With this a somewhat down year among local HS OL prospects, UH woulda…..coulda….shoulda…..offered Joey Anglemire…..who’s now a Wolfpack.
Never good for UH to lose to an in-conference opponent who actively recruits in Hawaii.
OLB/S Jacob Lacaden (Saint Louis) and DL Kalei Meyer (Kamehameha-Kapalama) will apparently also become Wolfpack next season.
It’s a new season:
N. Y. Giants 0-3
Washington Redskins 0-3
Pittsburgh Steelers 0-3
Minnesota Vikings 0-3
Tampa Bay Bucs 0-3
Jacksonville 0-3
SF 49ers 1-2
Atlanta Falcons 1-2
Green Bay Packers 1-2
Free Agency, cap limits, draft, injuries, walk-ons, and coaching staffs can make a big difference in one year. Example, the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs are undefeated at 3-0 as are the Chicago Bears under a new Head Coaches. It’s early, but the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos look to be the class of the NFC and the AFC to meet in the Super Bowl. Give the edge to the Seahawks at this point.
Spilt milk…No sense lamenting, the players are doing their best, so we gotta support them…The coaching sucks, but we should have given Mack his last year before jumping on getting Chow. Too late now, so all of those who wanted Mack out, take your medicine (kool-aid will suffice) and either go away or support the Warriors…
I bought season tickets for the 25th year, so I’m gonna be at the stadium no matter what…I just really wonder whether I’ll give my tickets up after this season if we get embarassed like the Von Appen years. In many ways, I think the Von Appen years weren’t this bad.
i too would like to have seen what coach mack would have done in season 5. that was a great 10-4 season in 2010.
2008 was a fun year, too. Warriors weren’t suppose to have a winning season. No one expected it save the Warriors and Warrior faithful AND Coach Mack … “We’ll get to a bowl game over my dead body.” … Inoke Funaki takes over as Quarterback due to injuries to the starters and Mack and Company are forced to create a moving pocket on Offense as well as adapt to more of a dual threat, read option type offense. It was a wild year, a crazy year, but a never say die year. We didn’t win the bowl, but we got there. That was Warrior football.
To think they modified the offense mid-season, over the course of a week, and pulled out a win.
The system was in place for 8 or so years. That probably made the difficulty of a mid season change easier. This is a new system and with a lot of young players still learning the system, making a change would probably be more difficult. Not impossible if changes were subtle but near impossible if dramatic.
Things could be better but I am not leaving. This is my team…all of it.
Where’s the Colorado announcement?
Really, what do we have to lose at this point? It seems pretty clear that we are still in rebuild mode and don’t have any post-season appointments.
@163 Coach Mac calling the back to back timeouts against Colorado to “talk family business” … It wasn’t polished, but it was leadership and game play that I enthusiastically bought season tickets to see.
San Diego State is the only team on our schedule this season that hasn’t won a game to date. BUT, they are averaging 1.5 times the points that we are.
San Jose comes a close second to San Diego with 20 pts per game…
http://www.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=44747
Wishing for Mack? Things are really going sideways now. Mac was a very nice man and seemed sincere but the writing was on the wall if we stayed with him. Things were heading south. I’m not sure what anyone can do to make a mid major in the middle of the Pacific successful. Things have changed. The big money teams and schools seem determined to break away and the smaller schools are floundering. June Jones is doing OK at SMU but he’s certainly not a world beater there and I doubt he will be.. I’m not sure he would do much better here at this time. Making UH successful again is going to be a difficult task and infinitely more difficult than simply starting Higgins at QB as some armchair geniuses think. I’m not sure coach Chow can right this ship but I’m really not sure anyone else can either. So he has my support. Have had seasons tickets for 20+ years and have enjoyed being a part of it. I honestly wonder how many more years it can last. I still think this team is young and has promise but things don’t look good from a team standpoint nor from the broader landscape of what is happening in college football. We need money and facilities to be able to compete over the long term. I’m not optimistic we will get either. And then when it is gone the blog geniuses will have more time to play with their fantasy BMW’s and their fantasy law practices.
Not wishing for Mack.. wishing for an offense more akin to the RnS. To Mack’s credit, he took us bowling every other season. June Jones, 7 out of 10. Like Tomey did so well at Arizona, JJ did well here. Sometimes the perfect match isn’t appreciated till they’re gone. Tomey did okay, but not as well elsewhere. So far, the same can be said of JJ.
Maybe it’s like real estate… when it comes to Coaches.. it’s all about Location, location LOCATION… maybe Allocation, too.
Nice to reminisce about June Jones or Greg McMackin.
Reality Check: You guys have the $1.65 million needed to buy out the remaining years on Norm Chow’s contract?
Reality check: Can we afford to lose 15% of the season ticket holders each year for the next three years? Can we afford to lose the Hawaii Sheraton Bowl? Can we afford to see diminishing returns on PPV?
Which would be costlier?
Chow was not the popular pick, but rather Greenwood’s pick, can we ask her to pick up the tab?
Or at least upper campus since they over rode the AD’s decision at that time.
I get all the dissatisfaction with coaching, and agree to a certain point. BUT, at some point, these athletes need to step up and make the decision not to make so many errors. Watching the replay, there were many bone-headed mistakes that left me scratching my head. Basic things like ball control, etc. You can’t always put that on the coach.
Players were playing their hearts out. Wish the best and a speedy recovery to those injured yesterday.
The $125,000 paid to a coach that is no longer here did not go over well and outraged many. Would buying out Chow for $1.65 million go over any better?
Either way, it’s not going to be pretty if we don’t start showing marked improvement soon.
176. It’s honestly the system…
Old School Dave,
I really think Upper Campus bears the responsibility of overriding the AD’s choice in the hiring of the Head Coach for football. As such, it’s their duty to set things right.
The score has looked bad because of our offense not being able to produce. I will admit we looked better we moved the ball better than we did against Oregon state and id even say USC but we NEED TO SCORE TD’s which apparently isnt happening and chow needs to understand that is what the fan base is so upset at after 1 year and 3 games our offense has played really really LACKLUSTER but our defense and special teams has shown improvement.
#170… I feel you. Mack did have that nice uncle that could get pissed persona. BUT Mack was not getting the D1 player talent level required! That’s a big part of why UH felt it had to eat the 1 million $ final year of his contact! Additionally, i heard from a very reliable source, Mack was not well respected by most other UH coaches. I agree, college football has changed so much. Even from when JJ was here. I really doubt that kind of instant success could be replicated again by him or anyone else. It’s just SO competitive now!! I am a longtime fan but often find myself wondering if all the effort really is worth it for the state and college. For me, i’ve been very impressed with Chow. He’s done very well with local recruiting, well too with mainland recruits. Say what you will, but under his watch we had a $200,000. t.v. fundraiser, and new player locker rooms. I don’t think that just “happened”. He hasn’t had the game wins yet. And he may never. But he has busted his a** for Hawaii and UH at half the pay of Uncle Mack. SHOW HIM SOME LOVE.
Sure, I’m frustrated for the players and very displeased with the outcome. I still hold out hope that Chow will turn things around, but that hope is diminishing very quickly. I see some improvement but not enough for a second season under Chow. I expect and demand more for our program and our student athletes.
We are all fans and we all obviously care though i do think some of us are being a tad over dramatic with the whole cheering for someones injury and fire chow after 1 year and 3 games
Chow has done everything right except win and i can guarantee if he starts winning EVERYONE couldnt careless how its done.
Maybe chow should talk to gary beemer to ask if Urban meyer has anyone else in mind to help out with our offensive woes.
MIH: Don’t disagree with you. I just don’t think that the non sports citizen would stand for any more people at UH getting paid for not being there on the job. Dobelle, Frazier, McMackin, Price, Greenwood, among others.
The problem is that Greenwood is no longer here as president. Same with Hinshaw. Greenwood vetoed Dirk Koetter’s candidacy, who was Jim Donovan’s choice, because of the negative publicity from his players running amok at ASU. The next UH president needs to be someone who is supportive and has a strong understanding of the importance of a Div-I football program and the challenges UH faces. Greenwood, from what I read, once made the statement that “If there was no athletics at UH, that would sit fine with her.”
Back to the situation at hand, Chow will have to look into his bag of tricks to right his ship. Back in 1979, Dick Tomey pulled aside safety Blaine Gaison and made him a quarterback during the last two games of the year. Gaison led UH to victories over Colorado State and Arizona State. At least Fresno State could be caught off guard this week and looking ahead to their next game and treat this one with UH as a holiday – mopeds and mai tais.
Here’s a guy who might be a welcomed addition as UH’s OC. Don’t know if he could absorb the paycut though (currently earns a base of $170,000, plus incentives up to $500,000) and also returning as an assistant after being a head coach. On the other hand, he could be someone that may be the guy to take over when Chow decides to retire. He was an OC during Tomey’s successful run at Arizona back in the 90s.

Go Bows! The best part of the game was finally giving Jeremy and Ikaika a chance to play. We watched two and a half games of Taylor and a year of Schroeder, now lets see more of Jeremy and Ikaika!
So madeinhawaii who was the Ad’s choice? Please share since you seem to have the inside scoop? And was it really his choice or that of the so called old boys that pulled his strings?
konoman1,
its not a secret that Jim Donovan wanted Dirk Koetter but Greenwood choose Chow due to some negative history that Dirk had at ASU.
