3 walk-ons awarded scholarships
At the end of today’s practice, three Rainbow Warriors received good news: Breakfast would be free.
Slotback Donnie King, running back Marcus Langkilde and defensive end Ikaika Cavaco-Amoy were awarded football scholarships today.
That means 1) No more Sallie Mae. 2) No double work shifts for their parents. 3) They are invited to eat training-table meals with other teammates on scholarships.
“It’s nice when we can help guys who have worked hard,” head coach Norm Chow.
King, Langkilde and Cavaco-Amoy count toward the Rainbow Warriors’ overall scholarship total, but not as one of the 25 initials. The Warriors have allotted 84 of their maximum 85 scholarships. Transfers Jeremy Castro and Quinton Pedroza went on scholarship today, the first day of UH’s fall semester, but will count as initials for the 2014 recruiting class. Castro and Pedroza have to redshirt this season.

Slotback Levi Wilson of College of San Mateo will not be joining the Rainbow Warriors this semester.
1st!
Geez…wafan…. LOL
2nd. gotta catch up with the blog
Grats to the new schollie players.
Congratulations to the three Warriors now on scholarship!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Close enough. Good morning everybody!
That is a lot of walkons receiving scholarships. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing. If you add on Borden than that’s 4 guys.
(J)J . . .
Wot badda you?
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Congrats to the walk-ons. Just paid my kid’s bill for books…ouch.
Are walk-on’s prohibited from eating at the training table? Or are they permitted to eat with the scholarship athletes if they pay for the meals out of their own pocket?
ppj2 . . .
Did not see you at Costco this summer.
Congratulations to the 3 new scholarship athletes!
Anybody know the status of the newly renovated warriors football locker’s ? Is it pau ?
FYI: My youngest is beginning her college career today, at UHM. While not a Div. I athlete, I consider her a Div. I student, having received a full scholarship from the College of Engineering and a general scholarship from UH. Her tuition and fees were paid in full and the excess refunded to her via cashier’s check this past Friday.
I understand this, but since USC has historically put up 49 or more points on UH, at least in the past two decades… should the optimistic be tempered with a score more like.. 54-UH 49-USC?
People who pick UH over USC at this point are engaging in what is known as a pleasant fiction. Watch the movie Titanic again for a good example showing what I mean. Look at the scene where the Titanic is about to go under. Some are scrambling to get to the rear of the ship in order to stay afloat for as long as possible; others, who I will call the “true believers,” are not scrambling around at all but are instead praying to god for a miracle. We all know what happened to those who merely prayed, and did nothing more. We also know what happened to some of those who acted based on logic and reason, and a little luck.
Nothing wrong with being a true believer, I say. To each his own.
The problem with true believers, often times and this is what I have tended to find, is that they tend to throw stones at the non true believers, the ones who rely on logic and facts in making decisions and/or in coming to conclusions.
NotNasti,
Congrats on having a scholar daughter. All the best to her!
Uhhhhh . . . yeah, right.

MIH, thanks! And #16 IT, duck! I see stones coming your way.
ST,
Besides Castro & Pedroza, any other brand new walk-ons being added to the roster (now that the school semester has started)?
Scholarships and grants are good things!
Cannot go wrong with free money.
Fan=Fanatic
Temper dat! 😈
Picking UH to win only matters if money is on the line. If not, root for your favorite. By the same token, UH fans who believe USC will win shouldn’t be chastised.
I will still be cheering for the local boys and the UH, even if chow does not play them. That’s the bottom line. Hope no one gets too banged up on our side. If there are polys on the USC side, I hope none of them get too banged up as well.
Otherwise, go UH!!!
Good for the new scholie players! Nice to see them get their reward for working hard!
GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!
Congrats to the new scholarship players! Keep working hard and keep making the team better.
Getting your books delivered is so much better than having go to campus center to buy them on your own. It doesn’t really get noticed, but that might be the best perk of a scholarship athlete.
That’s is why you don’t see many athletes cruising the book section of campus center, unless they need additional supplemental books for certain classes.
Is Rashaun Falemalu grey shirting or something? Thought he was at least a redshirt candidate.. Needs to put on some size.
22. Kory Rasmussen is a possible walk on….
Someone asked about the status of Benny Fonua (sp?) yesterday. Was it addressed? Is he going to red shirt this year? Seems like a lot of folks at LB.
Good Morning Folks
Good News for Athletes being awarded with scholarships!
Only 3 more days to BEAT USC!
Go BOWS!
ST will the team be on the makai side?
Sometimes some posts remind me of a quote from Billy Madison…

Wanna send get well soon wishes to PolyMom… Congrats to the new Schollie players! 3 more days till Kickoff!
I think the Makai side is bad luck. When was the last time we won on that side?
Aloha all….I also just paid tuition for a relative we are putting through law school here in the city, and while we do it willingly and with great aloha, it was basically the amount of a brand new base price of a BMW…ouch!!
…that is a lot of moolah…boola
30. He’s just simply behind the other guys… I noticed he had a hard time in space and covering TEs and RBs last year. He is a tweener as far as he’s not big enough to play DE and a step slow right now to play LB compared to guys like JGW, Art Laurel, Julian Gener, and others.
Congrats to the three walkons. Go bows.
#36. Boola, I feel your pain. Been paying for my oldest (son) 40K+ per year. So it was refreshing when my daughter chose UH, and the full ride they offered her. With her SAT scores and GPA, she could have gone anywhere. She loves the ocean (surf & canoe paddle) too much. I think I gotta buy her a new canoe.
37–Oh, tru dat…..but never had kids, and told all my nieces and nephews if they got solid grades in undergrad I would flip for their graduate education at wherever they wanted to attend…..never anticipated they were going to take me seriously???! Thank god we only got a couple smart kids on my side of the ohana.

There is nothing wrong in picking usc over Hawaii if that’s what you truly feel, but on the same hand nothing wrong with picking Hawaii over usc. I truly believe that we are going to win this game, I like having the same mind set as the players.
UH 21 – USC 17
Boola,
Can you adopt my son? After this year he only has four more years of Pharmacy school to go. I’m just about tapped out.
40–Not Nasti—oh yeah that pen was very ambivalent about writing the check. The messed up thing was that she got a scholarship for 15k and I still wrote a 40Kplus check. On the other hand, I got to ensure someone visits me at Lunalilo home in the coming decades….
ST: Whatever happened to Dustin Elisara? Is he still on the team? At one time, he was touted as a fullback before he got hurt.
Boola, I can tell . . . you’re a good man and so’s your wife (good woman).
45–Nasti, so he at a Pharm.D program….???On the flip side, they have guarans-ball-bearings six figure job for the rest of their life. Me, I am contributing to another lawyer to society–and you know how I feel about that….lawyers are the worse—-its only because I hate myself.LOL
The Warriors should be “pumped” by the headlines that the Trojans are treating this game like a “scrimmage”…The Warriors have to play “above their heads” and lay a few good licks on the Trojans to let them know that they’re in a game.
how many billable hours is that for you, boola?
51. Boola, from one JD to another, I can relate. I did not want my kids following in my footsteps. We profit from other people’s misery. Too much bad karma in this business.
Pomai,
USC 45 – Hawaii 17
@51 and boola…as a fellow JD, I like to think of it as we bring peace of mind and finality to those seeking peace of mind and finality.
oops…@52 and boola
USC is not taking Hawaii lightly. I don’t know how people conclude that just because they haven’t named a starting QB. When you lose your top QB to the NFL, there is going to be QB competition.
Alabama used 2 QBs when McCarron and Sims were freshman. 1 was better and other ended up transferring. Leinart and Cassell were competing years back and they turned out fine. Aaron Rodgers was the back up of a split QB system at Cal before he won the job over… Its not anything new in college football.
Oregon didn’t even announce Mariota as starter till week of the game.
At the start of an academic year it reminds me of the perils of undergrad. When I was at UH, we had an a special “athletic academic advisor” and his name was shoemaker–and he was terrible. I initially thought I would major in math having prior to AP classes taken my hs math at leeward cc–his answer was a flat NO. Too time consuming during the season–ok, how about I major in finance–again, lets think about something a little less competitive and time consuming . It’s a wonder we did not all graduate with PE degrees….(that’s not to say that’s not a good degree, but not so much when you are wanting to learn about chaos theory or vectors…)
ST:
Your statement on Levi Wilson leaves one to ponder if he will be eligible come January 2014 and join the team then or “say la v”?
or, you are teasing us again.
Is there a good reason that Coaches will continue to use the “slotback” position. Why not call it an inside receiver and just recruit receivers? Me can think of only 1 “slotback” in the pros who really made it and now with Denver.
Is it really true that there are more stars in the sky than all the grains of sand on earth?
If Hawaii played USC next year in 2014 at Aloha Stadium and everyone returning is healthy with a killa 2014 recruiting class? Then I would pick Hawaii to beat USC by 1 point. But since it’s only year 2 of the Chow era and the team is still pretty young with only around 12 seniors. I have to be honest, as much as it hurts me to say this, I give Hawaii little to no shot to be in the game by halftime and a less than 1% chance of winning.
Usually, USC will dominate Hawaii. The two most competitive game against USC were at home. We lost by 13 a number of years ago, 49-36, but offensively we had no problems moving the ball. Pilares had a big day. The other close game was the USC team that had Charles White. Hawaii was winning until the 4th quarter. I think we lost that one 21-5.
I think USC has a lot of bad karma. They lost 5 of their last 6 games. They have depth problems. They have had a lot of injuries. They are probably coming to Hawaii for a vacation and are taking Hawaii lightly. After Pete Carroll left, Lane Kiffen has done a worse job. USC still have 4 and 5 star rated players but the depth situation will make a difference. Weather will be very hot and humid. Hawaii has much better depth in several years with more players who are division I caliber types. I do think we stand a better chance to be more competitive at home and I also think anything can happen. You never know about turnovers. We need some breaks. For me, I think it’s going to be close. Like I said, USC has had a lot of bad karma so I hope Hawaii has some good karma this season.
Call it, Hawaii 24, USC 23.
What good is a TE as an inside/slot receiver?
He could be a good blocker on end-around or go over the middle for a short pass and punish any DB in the area.
51 and 52…I’m away from the billable race….ahh the joys of academia and teaching, thank god for universities and law schools.
ha, a 6′ 5″ 265# slotback
team would have 2 wide-outs, 1 TE, and 1 rather large slotback!
48 NotNasti: My sympathies. My #1 got her PharmD just over a year ago, lucky she got a job right away to help pay for the loans.
Boolakanaka: You sure we’re not related? Hehe
I will say that the ingredients are there for UH to pull off the shocker…
1. USC has QB issues: I think there will be 4 or 5 bad throws/decisions by USC QBs that could lead to turnovers. UH must be able to capitalize and convert to points. Also, the QB controversy has now been a daily talking point on all major sports media and is much more heated in LA media.
2. Kiffen is not taking UH seriously. That appears to be obvious. USC still has superior talent, but I don’t think it’s as big of gap as Kiffen seems to think.
3. USC has been suffering from a ton of injuries, they will be thin on the bench.
4. UH has been reportedly been routinely hitting big plays during camp. USC’s secondary is the one suspect unit on their defense. If UH’s line can give Graham time to throw, UH can expose USC’s DBs.
—
More talking points… Dan Patrick reported that his USC insider told him that Kessler has been the best QB in camp but Wittek is “Kiffen’s guy” and Kiffen is pushing for Wittek.
The ingredients are there… UH just needs to find the way to put them together to pull off the upset.
65–3-prong. Secrets to life: always marry above yourself; once in a while be the first to buy a round; and if a university is naive enough to offer you a faculty job, immediately say yes.
67
Where have you concluded any of that from???
1. How does USC have QB issues? Because it can’t decide between which 4 or 5 star QB they want to start? Would Oregon have QB issues had Johnny Manziel went to Oregon where he originally committed to and have to battle with Mariota? Sounds like a great issue to have.
2. Can you show me where Kiffin is taking Hawaii lightly? I don’t think any of us have watched a USC practice to see how they prepared.
3. ton? I think USC injuries are pretty normal to what Hawaii has been going through.
4. UH is hitting big plays at practice… Could that also mean our corner back play is very weak? Big plays usually are a result in break downs by the defense.
@67 Former UH Athlete
“The good news is UH has reportedly been routinely hitting big plays during camp.” The bad news is UH has reportedly been routinely hitting big plays during camp.
Come Thursday, the stars have got to be in alignment, much like UH vs. BYU (1st win). I hope they are. I HOPE they are.
Makes me wonder when USC had a starting QB outside of the OC pipeline.
Scrimmages and practices are usually zero-sum events.
Anyway, seems the last week prior to the start of football always drags on. And once underway is usually over before you know it.
Oh, word in Redskins camp is that Ryan Mouton will be cut.
These or this SPAM guy is getting quite creative. Is there a SPAM contest somewhere where folks are judged on most creative ways to be absolutely annoying? You know where folks with unlimited time on their hands with no social graces, selfish motivation and self aggrandizement qualities are in abundance.
This guy could compete. I’d vote him as Pain in the A__ winner.
Looking like a good chance for humid weather on Thursday.
The steamier, the better! 😎
Congrats to the 3 walkons who received scholarship. Place at the table, now.
UH 42 – USC 31
Hey does anyone know where i can find the game online streaming. My cable provider does not carry CBS sports network, so I need to watch it on my computer. Anyone with info, it would be appreciated greatly.
Well, I’m not sure the blog host likes us sharing info regarding illegal streams that might be available online. But if you enter into a search engine “first row”, you might find something useful.
Boolakanaka: I frequently grab the 1st round, but I married for love instead…….schools not offering so guess I gotta settle for 1 out of 3, but Life is Good, cannot complain.

D should be decent if everyone stays healthy.
Totally off topic but Deedy trial ends in hung jury. Find it hard to believe that During his bar hopping that night he had a total of 4 beers. At one place he took a sip of one and didn’t finish it. At another place he wasn’t feeling well so he again drank a part of the beer. Later in the night someone bought him abeer and he “gave it away” because he consioisly knew how much he could drink without getting drunk. Oh and also he let others order drinks on his credit card that he didn’t drink. Come On Man, you shouldn’t have been carrying your gun if you were going to drink. Period.
I’m sure the local guy was acting up but he didn’t deserve to die. Ok, back to regular programming.
I bleed green…born a warrior, raised a warrior, die a warrior, so I always BELIEVE!!!
Hell if you told me me were playing Georgia again, I’d say we win!!
BEAT USC!!!
Not surprised. Manslaughter, yes. Murder 2? Questionable.
I think of drinking and carrying the same as drinking and driving. In either case, it affects your decision-making process.
Been a grip of year since I have been in a criminal court, so this is a humble 2 cents: manslaughter is a distinct crime and is not considered a lesser degree of murder. The essential distinction between the two offenses is that malice aforethought must be present for murder, whereas it must be absent for manslaughter. Manslaughter is not as serious a crime as murder. On the other hand, it is not a justifiable or excusable killing for which little or no punishment is imposed.
At Common Law, as well as under current statutes, the offense can be either voluntary or Involuntary Manslaughter. The main difference between the two is that voluntary manslaughter requires an intent to kill or cause serious bodily harm while involuntary manslaughter does not. Premeditation or deliberation, however, are elements of murder and not of manslaughter. Some states have abandoned the use of adjectives to describe different forms of the offense and, instead, simply divide the offense into varying degrees. In short, for all parties involved, judgement is an issue to all concerned……and as well, an unfortunate outcome for all the families.
Too bad the drugs Elderts was on, affected his decision making to try and disarm a federal agent that’s pulled his gun out. Then to try and take it away from him, proved costly.
boola…i take you dont teach crim law or crim procedure…what you teaching, ucc?
Deedy is guilty of something. Not murder imo
hey!…who kicked my soap box….all broken now…..

In the Trayvon Martin case, manslaughter was on the table. I remember the defense having a fit when becoming aware of this revelation.
101 corporate governance, board responsibility …etc
RIP Mr. Awaya.
Play the music of the stars to the beat of the heavens!
Ahhhh that Starbucks coffee is going to taste so good!!!!!
#100: because i’m sure deedy was exercising clear and sober judgment as a federal LEO when instigating and escalating a conflict with elderts (even though he admitted that no crime was in progress and nobody was asking for his help, and did not notify security or local law enforcement), kicking the man despite his girlfriend telling him to leave, and then discharging his weapon (whether with or without malice aforethought) when he realized he bit off more than he could chew.
poor judgment by both parties. although, i tend to be more sympathetic to the dead guy who made poor choices than the guy who made poor choices with a gun that is now in court trying to explain himself.
Call the Coach with Bobby Curran and Norm Chow on ESPN 1420am radio. Tonight 6:00 pm.
Independent Thinker: I forgot exactly what you predicted the score would be against USC. Something along the lines of 47-6, USC. But you also qualified your statement by saying “this is assuming that taylor graham is starting for most of the game.”
What would be your prediction if your boy higgins was starting?
Call da coach with Norm Chow coming up on 1420.
Deedy trial reminds me of Roshoman. Seems everyone who testified had a different version of what happened.
Aloha everyone! Love all the passion these last couple days. Does anyone have the pulse on the campus? Are the students excited at all about “their team” or is it just the locals and die hard fans? We have not seen the students get excited nor anyone challenge them to get excited bout “their team” since Colt and the Dread Heads left Manoa. Win or lose, lets keep our support behind the team and the coach and the individual players who are bustin butt to make a difference as red shirts and scouts etc. Also, agree with a lot of you who want to see the Lakalaka’s et al get their shots against USC. Just pray that everyone plays smart and stays healthy. Its a very long season.
Wohoo the comercials on ESPN
But we lucky…no more commercials…juust spam and idiots.

I enjoyed the “Call the Coach” tonight… Coach seemed excited for the season. Good discussion of the individual players.
prosecution is stoopid. all they needed to do was get deedy to halawa any way possible. halawa would’ve provided just punishment.
MIH, reason UH will win is made in Hawaii…
Howzit Tsaikos!
I’m baaaaack! Didja miss me? 🙄 😆
Boolakanaka – can you adopt Screecher too? Pleeeeeeeeease? I paid $15k+ for the SEMESTER for tuition, room/board, fees, etc. There goes my retirement money.
Many in LA are trying to figure out how/where to watch the game because of the CBS/TWC dispute. I predict STELLAR business for bars with sat dishes. The fans will be drowning their sorrows on Thursday.
BTW, my nephew, who’s a USC season tix holder, would recommend taking UH and the points to anyone. HAH!
jm2375,
In the LA/Desert Cities market and have TWC. No CBS, but still receiving CBS Sports Network which will be carrying the game. Hmm, uh oh, maybe shouldn’t have said anything.

Yeah, Coach Chow’s Call the Coach Show gave the warm n’ fuzzies. Could sense an air of confidence. Interesting perspective: Not worried about the other guys; his focus is on the players performing the way they trained and practiced. Definitely they’re better – stronger, faster and better prepared. That’s all we can ask of our team and coaching staff.
