Warriors land outside hitter

It appears that Hendrik Mol, a 6-foot-6 pin hitter from Norway, is set to sign with the volleyball Rainbow Warriors and play this coming season.

Mol has a contact reach of 11 feet, 4 inches on spikes.

Mol also is one of the top beach volleyball players in Europe.

Belated congratulations to Ka Ulukoa 17s on winning the USVA Boys’ Junior Volleyball championship. Former Warrior Pono Ma‘a is the head coach. Future Warrior Tui Tuileta was the tournament’s MVP. Tuileta, who is entering his senior year at Punahou, will play football and volleyball at UH.

Micah Ma‘a, who will be a junior, also was named to the all-tourament team as an outside hitter. His usual position is setter. He is the son of Pono Ma‘a and former Rainbow Wahine Lisa Strand-Ma‘a.

Yes, that was the Hawaii football team working out on Waikiki Beach this morning.

* * * * *

A recruit who plays beach volleyball. A volleyball-football player. Football players on the beach. We’ve come full circle today.

* * * * *

We were too late to get in on the ground floor on Apple, Google and L&L Drive Inn stock. But if you’re in charge of the football schedule at UH, it would be a good idea to take advantage of newbies and book early. These schools are launching FCS programs:

In 2013:

Houston Baptist

Mercer

Stetson

North Carolina-Charlotte

In 2014:

East Tennessee State

Kennesaw

New Orleans

They’re new and naive. Don’t even tell them about travel subsidies.

Hawaii-UNLV football Oct. 12 road game tickets:

$55 each for 50 yard sideline seats

Hawaii is considered one of two premium games this season; sideline seats are $20 higher for this game than regular games. It is very hard to get good seats for this game; you can pay $50 (plus $13 mailing fee) directly from the office on Aug. 15 but you will only get end zone seats; & the UH ticket office usually gets the worse end zone seats about 50 yards away from the end of the field & way up high. Sit safely with a 100 other diehard Hawaii fans! If you are a Tsaiko and previously bought from Rich, contact him directly pls.

    Deadline for ordering tickets: ASAP.

    Email me: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

UH playing football in LV is just like a home game. It is still shocking that we lost the last game in Vegas by 20 as 20 point favorites. Heard some stories about the players prior to the game and it was quite disturbing. That game, to me, said that McMackin wasn’t going to survive very long as Head Coach. But, we will try again this year under Coach Chow. Even if we lose some in the casino, it always feel a lot better if we win the football game. Lose both and that’s a bad trip. I’m already booked for the Reno and LV games. Weather should be pleasant.

  17. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 7:47 am

I think UH needs to check the recent Rainbow Classic schedules, call those schools and ask: Hey, do you guys have a football team?

I’m keeping my eye on Maryland-Eastern Shore.

I think those week-long stays in Vegas were, uh, challenging.

On the fifth of eighth days in Vegas, I was ready to sell plasma (or a kidney, hey, we each have a spare) for more gambling money.

We did find a good laundromat: Rainbow Laundromat.

  20. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 10, 2013 7:52 am

Ahh yes, Kennesaw, our fans are foaming to see this rivalry develop.

    ComeNsee, Kennesaw.

  21. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 7:56 am

I think Kennesaw was the name of a former baseball commissioner.

  22. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 7:58 am

Kenesaw Mountain Landis was indeed baseball’s first commissioner.

His parents’ second choice for a first name was Koolau.

  23. boolakanaka July 10, 2013 7:59 am

That said, Gretchen Mol would be a very fetching libero.

  24. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 7:59 am

It’s just an observation, but right after IWWTHM posts, there always appears to be links to sites selling designer bags. Please tell me IWWTHM doesn’t carry a LV or MK man bag.

  25. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 10, 2013 8:00 am

    ST,

    Don’t hate on my style.

  26. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 10, 2013 8:00 am

And it’s Hermes. LV is childs play.

  27. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 8:01 am

I have two DVDs starring Gretchen Mol.

I keep the “Rounders” DVD in front of the “Bettie Page” DVD.

  28. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 8:03 am

    IWWTHM

I appreciate your style. I’m glad it’s not LV. Those bags look plastic-like. Plus, I think they sell those knockoffs every 100 yards at Aloha Stadium.

  29. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 8:03 am

Which brings me to another rant:

Why is there no RainbowTique at the swap meet?

  30. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 8:04 am

    Rant (continuing):

I loathe to bring up “Rounders” because then people start reaching for Oreos and start doing really bad John Malkovich impersonations.

  31. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 10, 2013 8:05 am

    ST,

Probably because like LV, there are knockoffs every 100 yards haha. I’ve seen UH jersey’s for sale at the swap meet before. Not sure if they were the ones by Kop Inc.

  32. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 8:07 am

    Whoops. Wrong Ed Norton.

I think Ed Norton’s greatest accomplishment was dating Salma Hayek.

  48. Derek July 10, 2013 8:32 am

Ben Jay should take advantage of the Hawaii exemption by scheduling the full 13 game regular season. You want that extra home game. There is a reason, a good reason, why we have that exemption. I say try to work with the NCAA to start the season one week early for Hawaii. You still want at least one bye week during the regular season. If Hawaii is good enough to be eligible for a football conference championship game that would be #14, but I think that’s a good problem. Plus, a bowl game and that’s potentially #15 which is another good problem to have. The FCS have the playoffs with 16 teams for the national championship and those teams that qualify who make it to the championship game can also play about15 games too. But, to get to the earlier point, the Hawaii exemption gives Hawaii an extra home game because of Hawaii’s isolation and gives us some more revenue to cover the added costs to run the program and athletic department. To not use the Hawaii exemption is foolish and if you don’t use it the NCAA could possibly say to do away with it period. As it is, football is pretty much a year round sport anyway. It’s either spring practices, recruiting periods, conditioning and strength drills, 7 on 7s, film study, summer school, more recruiting, etc. etc. etc.

  49. rage777 July 10, 2013 8:35 am

#29 ST – Maybe could UH expand the Rainbowtique to a full bookstore (fill the void with the closing of Borders) to various locales on island. UW has several such bookstores in the Seattle area that sell an assortment of Husky goods and apparel.

The football team is in terrible physical condition according to our new strength and fitness coach on the BC show this morning .He said that he was

not impressed with current level of fitness by this years football team.

This doesn’t surprise me after all they are Rainbows.

  68. jimmy the lock July 10, 2013 11:03 am

That’s one way to get the players to step up.

  69. Inyoface July 10, 2013 11:05 am

They need a better audio archive on ESPN 1420, especially for the local interviews.

  70. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 11:18 am

One of the craziest drills is the roll. A player puts on a weighted vest, tthen sits in a wheelchair, then wheels himself the width of Ching field. There’s no traction because of the loose granules. It’s all arms and shoulders. Even the most fit is soaking in sweat after several laps.

    Aloha Hendrik!

Looks like a very good player. Although the video shows him hitting through a lot of split blocks, his all around game looks solid. The team is looking good with the newbies coming in and will be the bomb when Tui gets there!

    Go Rainbow Warriors!

  72. Warrior Dave July 10, 2013 11:48 am

    #63. Thanks for the recap.

So glad this new coach tells it like it is. I tend to agree with his assessment. When the 4th Q rolls around, O-line looked gassed and their speed and strength can’t keep up with the opponent D-line.

I Love our teams effort but with better conditioning, their jobs will be easier.

  73. Inyoface July 10, 2013 11:52 am

Beemer is a no nonsense type of coach. That’s the best kind.

  74. A-House July 10, 2013 11:58 am

    H. Mol appears, at least to me, a better right side hitter – seems more comfortable; skilled in finding the open spaces or the blocking hand with the least resistance; good vertical to hit and block; and has a good wind-up or trigger ( goes up, pauses, then wacks the ball ).

His pause before hitting the ball is very noticeable and may use this to his advantage against a blocker or blockers; looks like a strong wrist. Wonder how fast his ball travels?

  75. Ron July 10, 2013 12:16 pm

Very good evaluation Mr. House, you either used to coach the sport or you are very sharp.

  76. Bowwar July 10, 2013 12:24 pm

Coach Beamer didn’t want to acknowledge any particular athlete doing good because he felt that no one was “completely” good in ALL of the drills. I like this guy’s approach and I hope they hire another strength trainer, since they are under staffed witnin the UH athletic department.

  77. roofer68 July 10, 2013 12:27 pm

    74. Mr A-House, your hitting description is exactly what Emily Hartong does.

  78. A-House July 10, 2013 12:30 pm

Mol may be the replacement for Jonas if he decided not to return for his masters degree.

I believe that Coach Beemer said he was impressed by the physical condition of some players, but also woefully disappointed for some other players. I do not believe he meant to imply that the entire team is out of shape.

    UH vs UNLV

I just spoke with Tom and I relinquished my role as “ticket guru” to him this time around. It is much easier for everyone to deal with one person. For those of you who have inquired about tickets from me, I will be forwarding your requests to him.

BTW, I just noticed the UH ticket office is charging $60 per ticket ($50 + $10 fee) for this game. I seriously doubt those tickets are anywhere near the 50 yard line.

GET YOUR REQUESTS TO TOM ASAP AS HE WILL BE PUTTING A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY ON HIS CREDIT CARD TO TAKE CARE OF THE TSAIKOS. When you contact him, please include both your blog and “real” name. Email me if you have any questions.

See you all in 2015 at UNLV!!!

  90. gobows July 10, 2013 2:56 pm

wonder which newcomer appears to be in the best shape. i have a feeling its st. juste.

  91. Tolkien Warrior July 10, 2013 5:25 pm

That’s awesome regarding Coach Beemer’s comments. Strength and conditioning (and quickness) seemed to be under maximized in years prior. Yeah, agree, we seemed to fade in the 4th. I’m so stoked for the future of our program. That is Boise’s advantage all these years that is hopefully now diminished. Raaaaaahhhhhhhhh! LET’S GO BOWS!!

  92. gobows July 10, 2013 6:25 pm

i think they faded in the 2nd quarter in a few games last year. no 1st downs in second half against air force. i hope coach price does a lot better play calling.

    GO RAJ SINGH!!! Represent, homeboy!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  94. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 7:17 pm

I always hear people gush about Phil Steele. I thought I’d give him another shot. I went to Barnes & Noble today and bought a bunch of football mags. I decided to focus on San Jose State. Steele opens by talking about the QB situation from a few years ago. There’s too much rehashing. I thought Lindy’s did the most thorough job. USA Today was the worst. Sporting News was so-so. Athlon was OK. But again, very disappointed in Steele. Whatcha guys think?

  95. gobows July 10, 2013 7:24 pm

steele’s on-line hawaii page has 2 mistakes on the schedule, he has the usc and army games on the road. he’s trying to cover too much with the fcs and nfl. but i’ll still pick it up, didn’t know it was out yet.

  99. Warrior Dave July 10, 2013 9:41 pm

    #94. ST,

All I can tell you about Phil Steele is that he predicted UH to go indefeated in 2007 and go to a BCS Bowl.

In my mind, he’s a genius!!! I like what I hear when he makes his annual appearance on Bobby’s show.

  100. Warriorfan July 10, 2013 9:59 pm

Any idea who the new assistant for the warrior volleyball team will be?

  101. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 10, 2013 10:32 pm

Quick peek at the football locker….Not lockeroom, i said locker.

Looks to be pretty much on par for what schools are using these days. Very nice with the H logos being used quite generously! 🙂 Yippie!

  102. papajoe2 July 10, 2013 10:32 pm

Kekaula says that Mike Lum was the first Japanese to play in the Major leagues. Is Lum a Japanese name?

  103. papajoe2 July 10, 2013 10:36 pm

iwwthm isn’t the lockers to small for football gear? Where to do they put the shoulder pads? Could be on the seats. Looks nice though.

  104. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 10, 2013 10:42 pm

The lockers are really different from the artists renditions found on Hawaii Athletics site. To be expected I suppose.

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 10, 2013 10:46 pm

    papajoe2,

I suppose they leave it on top the chair. It looks like the chair doubles as a chess as well.

Again, much different from the pictures but 100000000x better than the sadness they had before.

  106. Stephen Tsai July 10, 2013 11:16 pm

That locker is not even in the locker room.

The background, as you can see, is the UH football office.

There’s as good a chance of the locker room being finished by July 31 as the rail being completed in my lifetime.

  110. papajoe2 July 11, 2013 12:51 am

Until yesterday, besides being the all time leader in RBIs in the major leagues for a player from Hawaii, what did Mike Lum do in the majors that no one else did?

    LizK:

We were on Kauai last week and went fishing at the Waimea pier – caught some taape, papio, halalu, and 2 small hammerhead sharks which my brother cut up for bait.

    It was really HOT!!!

let’s see – today is Thursday, 7/11/13 and we know ST is already working diligently in getting all the UH sports news of interest to us on this blog

Football or VB or whatever – controversial items are best as we hear many opinions for or against by many; even those who lurk – where are you lurkers??? – come on out and join us posters – no shame – can write good or junk – das ok – prefer “standard English” or “pidgin” – works both ways!!

  127. A-House July 11, 2013 9:47 am
