Guiding lights
Since January, linebacker Art Laurel has been working to rehab a surgically repaired left shoulder. The past several weeks, Laurel also has been helping youth mend their lives.
Laurel and defensive tackle Saui Matagiese are volunteers at Palama Settlement as part of their curriculum as family resource majors.
“The kids we work with are mandated by the court to be there,” Matagiese said. “There are a bunch of kids with rough backgrounds. They all have POs. They have to check in. They can’t leave without parole officers signing them out.”
Both players assist the students in activities ranging from computer sciences to sports.
“As rough as they are, they’re a bunch of good kids,” Matagiese said. “They need guidance. I need to plant one or two seeds.”
Laurel’s older brother, former UH lineman Clayton Laurel, is a counselor for a youth program in Las Vegas. Art Laurel said he learned a lot after spending a day at his brother’s work place.
“It’s a good experience,” Laurel said of his summer internship. “It’s a challenge for me. I like to challenge myself.”

The WB’s friend, Jon Nielsen, spent time with Jerome Williams and Shane Victorino last night. Nielsen texted us this picture:
Nielsen is affiliated with Boyz II Men. Perhaps the singers could perform a concert here that would benefit the UH athletic department.
What? Too soon to talk about benefit concerts?

Good morning everybody!
Top 5.
Mornin’ Mr. PapaJoe
Beautiful day outside.
Read Ferd’s article in the SA this morning. I cannot help but wonder how much money UH would have made if it went independent.
Warriors giving back…sweet!!
BEAT USC!!!
This year and last year UH can’t take advantage of our 13 game rule. AD Ben should try to get the NCAA to let UH start the season a week earlier than the rest of the nation to add a 13th game for us and our opponents. With all the end of the season league playoffs, getting a marquee team for the last game of the season, seems highly improbable. Maybe, if we get the exemption to start earlier, we can load up the front end of the season with BCS teams. They would think that starting their season to prepare for conference play, with a “warm up game, and a win”, plus a trip to Hawaii may be too good to pass up. This may work until we upset somebody, then they would think it is not worth it.
Good Morning
top10!
Good Morning Folks!
Terrific posts yesterday Haka! 🙂
Have a great day everyone!
Good Morning, All.
As was pointed out on Leahey & Leahey with ST, BYU is still lurking about. They may still want to ask back into the MWC at some point. What happens to UH in such a case? Secret Airport Lobby meeting #2 again, like in 97?
Good morning to all.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
It is never too late for a concert to benefit UH!
Art Laurel and Saui Matagiese – thank you for your service to the youths at Palama Settlement.
Doesthis sound better
PapaJoe, Ferd didn’t mention that the College Football Championsip payout to UH via the MWC (which will replace the BCS payout after this coming season) will be a minimum of $1 million per year, and close to $1.8 million in years when the MWC finishes as the top non-power conference. As an independent UH wouldn’t receive this money.
What do you mean by website
#8, I believe it was Norm Chow who shot down the idea of playing a 13th game. He wanted a bye week.
Good morning!
It might be difficult to make money with an eight game schedule.
Great Morning All!
Good on the two Rainbow Warriors for paying it forward. It can potentially help all of us.
Good morning Tsaikos!
Hope you are all having a great weekend!
Wafan – you stay Hawaii yet?
No, Chow didn’t shoot down 13th game. He was the one who proposed adding Temple last year. The players and coaches wanted to play that gane. It was very apparent the UH workers wanted the season to end.
While all the Pac-12 dreaming is nice, I think UH needs to first go all in with the Mountain West first. Don’t want to be the only affiliate member when conference shifting begins again. Face it, what were the benefits of Big West? Not much, apparently.
ST #24,
Jay insists that the BW provides for lowered travel costs for the Olympic sports. Ferd should do a numbers article on the real costs of traveling to BW sites vs. MWC sites.
I wouldn’t be surprised that traveling to some MWC schools might be the same price as traveling to some BW schools that isn’t near a major airport.
Good morning everyone!
Commendable efforts by Art Laurel and Saui Matagiese!
2 things I remember from the Donovan era that I wish I had asked Jay. If anyone knows the answer, please chime in.
1) Is the PAC12 vs. Hawaii game in Osaka still being planned?
2) Hawaii and I think the MWC was asking the NCAA for an exemption to start our football season one week early.
Anyone know the status of these things?
Don’t want to sound pessimistic, but I thought that UH should schedule a home game with a “flexible” school on the weekend of the MWC championship. If we make the playoff, we pay a reasonable penalty to the cancelled school.
If we don’t go to the playoff, we have our 7th home game and the opponent would be even happier to come here and play a school not in the running for a championship… 🙄
I Think BYU is still holding out for a B12 invite. That’s if the B12 acquiesces to the “NO Sunday play” as a condition to membership. Yet, I’m not sure how long BYU is willing to hold out as an independent waiting for that dream date. I think BYU’s other sports being in the WCC is hurting them.
Nevada end-of year disbursement totaled 2.64 million. That’s pretty good considering how all their sports finished at the end of the year and where they finished in the Directors Cup standings, which was dead last in the conference. Worthy to note is the basketball revenue (NCAA tournament revenue: $760,000 and money from the MWC basketball tournament: $189,000) accounted for a percentage of the disbursement. Now compare that to what the Big West paid out (minus the travel subsidies).
I think Boeing’s stock just dropped a few points. Appears everyone on board is okay, with the exception of a few injuries. Dreamliner or Nightmareliner?
Here’s a picture that shows the tail ripped off.

Shoko,
Reports are that this was a 777 that crashed; not a 787 Dreamliner.
Never been impressed with the single-aisle 777. It feels like a longer, narrower 737. 🙁
I stand corrected. Interesting that the tail ripped off on the 777. Only thing I can think of that happening is if there was some uncontrolled pitch (flare) upon landing. At least there were no fatalities at this point being reported.
I think if you guys changed the “Warrior Beat” to “Rainbow Warrior Beat”, you would reduce the number of spam that uses Google to find the blog. Just a thought…
ST, How about a current picture of Art? You had one of Saui as the “biggest bicep” winner. He looked to be in real good shape.
Reports now say there were fatalities.
God bless.
Shoko,
I was mistaken as well. I was thinking of the 757. 777 is a big a$$ plane.
Prayers up for those at SFO! God be with all of them!
Witnesses are saying that they saw a white plume of smoke on touchdown. Some folks are saying possible tires blown and main landing gear failure (collapse). Still doesn’t explain why the tail snapped off. Guess we won’t find out until NTSB completes their investigation. RIP for those that died.
Nice to see Warriors planting seeds. Art and Saui are a couple of quality guys, and help to show the quality of the Warrior program.
Looking at the live coverage, there is debris scattered at the very beginning of the runway. Could be an indication the pilot came up short on approach.
Anyway, things to do and places to go. Enjoy the day, folks!
That airline doesn’t use 787’s.
Still, prayers and positive thoughts to the families.

So dog gone hot.
So will someone explain why, if it is the rouge SA blogger who is spamming the WB, it does not spam its own blog. Might get its count up. Might help, too, if it did not insist on posters not hiding behind aliases as it does here and using “real” names.
Odd clown. Or was that someone else.
Today the Guiding Light, Tomorrow, As the World Turns!!!
My SF Giants are going in the tank. Need some hitting. The trading deadline can’t come soon enough. Former Giant Juan Uribe killed them yesterday against the Dodgers with 7 RBIs. Giants also need another starter. Two guys on the disabled list has hurt the Giants big time. The loss of Angel Pagan and reliever Santiago Casilla.
#23. Wrong year. We’re talking this year. The Temple was turned down last year because it would have just added to the red ink.
