Spring game

The Warriors’ spring training ends with today’s first Black-White game.

It will be a chance to watch some of the Warriors’ younger players, such as quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, fullback Marcus Langkilde, defensive tackles Hunter Thomson and Mike Andrade, cornerback Anthony Pierce and linebacker Julian Gener.

The event begins at 4:30 p.m. at Ching Field.

The unusual opening time is because of the lights. In constructing sand volleyball courts on the mauka side, the row of lights were disconnected and relocated. Not all of the makai lights work, either, The Warriors did not want to play too late when visibility might be a concern.

* * * * *

A concerned UH fan apparently donated $1,000 to be used for lightbulbs and ladders on the lower campus.

Lightbulbs are the new soap.

* * * * *

The last offensive guard selected in the NFL draft’s top 10?

That would be Chris Naeole, by the New Orleans Saints in 1997. Naeole, of course, is the Warriors’ offensive line coach.

    Ohayoooooooooogozaimasu!!!!

First of all, Mr. Tsai, you mentioned, yesterday, that “Tyler Brown and Craig Cofer will play for both teams.” What shirt or colors do THEY wear on the playing field for the Spring Fling?

    Pro-WARRIORS thought of the day:

Let’s go [not ‘bows] to Wikipedia for gems for today’s thought(s); from the ‘site’s Warrior article:

    Women as warriors

    Main article: Woman warrior

While the warrior class in tribal societies is typically all-male, there are some exceptions on record where women (typically unmarried, young women) formed part of the warrior class.

A purported group of fighting women is the legendary Amazons, recorded in Classical Greek mythology.

    Hmph. Omoshiroi, ne?*

In many societies in which a specialized warrior class exists, specific codes of conduct (ethical code or honour code) are established to ensure that the warrior class is not corrupted or otherwise dangerous to the rest of society. Common features include valuing honour in the forms of faith, loyalty and courage.

    Examples include the following:

    . . .

    ▪ Medieval knights’ code of chivalry;

    ▪ Samoa’s Toa class, which used a warrior code known as fa’aaloalo (Respect) that is still in existence today;

    . . .

    ▪ Japan’s samurai class, which uses a warrior code known as Bushido (The Way Of The Warrior)

    ▪ Xiá in China . . .

A Grease didn’t see the word “rainbow” or “rainbow warrior” even once in that article.

    . . . and that’s your pro-WARRIORS thought of the day.

Thanks for the lighting explanation, ST. That explains why the original 5:30 start time was moved to 4:30, then 5:00, and now back to 4:30 again… gotta factor in sunset, cloud cover, etc. 😐

But, what time will the players enter the field to do stretching, warmups, etc.? This might be a more accurate time gauge.

Heh, you’re on, PolyMom (hey, that rhymes 🙂 ). We’ll have to find a cherry picker that’s not wid’ d’a union; else probably take 6 months to procure that machine.

    Can do repaint, too.

If there’s so much pride for the lower campus, wonder why there’s not a set volunteer group (materials paid for by generous contributors) to upkeep the place. You know. Like how there’s that ONE guy in the neighborhood with his paint pails to paint over graffiti.

You are so gracious, PolyMom. 🙂

    Telephone (911) Bomb threat?

    How retro!

Gotta take precautions and treat it as real, of course… but from Star-Advertiser breaking news… …The package was disarmed just before 10 a.m.

Police from the special services department “rendered the package safe at the scene,” according to police. An explosion was heard shortly after the bomb squad arrived.

Authorities did not immediately say whether the package contained an actual explosive device. …

    grease #23:

past 3 years in August Jim Donovan had a “Manoa maker over” dqy for lower campus – usually 1/2 day with lunch (which he paid for)

painting, weeding, low tree trimming, power washing walkways, etc – great fun!

I do agree with you and have said this many times in the past, that there is nothing wrong with “construction” material donations to “spruce up lower campus” – building material supply houses can donate and use it was a tax write-off – contractors can donate man power and also calculate man-hours into $$$ and take a tax write off.

only problem is the “union” may make a fuss and can run into “bidding problems” alto there is no bidding at all – just concerned fans who want to contribute to UH-Manoa.

another item was the “possible” liability problem if a volunteer was injured.

Just remember if you collect too many old burnt-out flourscent light bulbs (tubes), you will exceed the small generator limit of hazardous waste, and need to do the proper paperwork to store and dispose of the waste. You cannot just throw them away, but need to properly dispose in a hazardous waste landfill probably on the mainland.

another item was the “possible” liability problem if a volunteer was injured.

This concept — if the norm (pardon the football coach pun) — is absolute horse$#17. Volunteers on this island alone paint, upkeep their local schools on a regular basis.

The need to keep ‘bows, the “nobody cares” bomb (pardon this pun, too) that Ben Jay recently twitter-dropped . . . a Grease is beginning to think this “honestly, we really DON’T care about UH sports; but, they sure as hell help to keep our margin” angle stems from the same source.

Maybe Ben Jay’s the guy to root it out. Pray.

I would love to see Davone Bess as a 49er – they need an inside slot receiver who can go over the middle for short passes and explode into the secondary for long yardage or TD.

Don’t feel Dolphins used his skill to their benefit as they always wanted the WR to excel – look at what the Patriots did with “Wes Welker” whom they lost to Denver in free agency

The lightbulbs became an issue because the AD tweeted about it.

He said he was going to personally go on a ladder and change the lightbulbs.

His intentions are very well-meaning, but people need to be cautious of what they promise. I’m reminded of Reggie Cross promising to clean the top of the Blaisdell with a toothbrush if he didn’t make the 76ers.

Bess is used primarily as a first down possession receiver whereas he could be a “Wes Welker type” where he could be used across the middle on a drag route and beat the defender for YAC. A team with a decent QB in a west coast system would love Bess.

  102. Moocher April 25, 2013 3:24 pm

When i did construction work we had a charity program called christmas in april. Contractors donated material and labor for a day. prior to that day we all had set tasks and knew what we were going to do. because it was what we do, we had the skill and means to get a lot done.

Now i’m gonna say this…it’s time the state get some payback from the unions. if the state is always awarding jobs to unions, then its time for unions to step up with contractors and do a “fall fix-it”.

for a day bring electricians to get all lights working, plumbers to get all facilities working properly. bring in carpenters, painters, drywallers, masons to do the same. carpet guys, i don’t think there is a union but they can participate…but you get the picture.

Have UH maintenance crews go through all that needs repair. a list can be created of materials and items needed, and they can “supervise” for that day or work alongside contractors. maybe each might learn new techniques to do things.

If I were Ben Jay, i’d get on the horn with the union and unionized contractors and also places like city mill or other contractor suppliers and see if this can be done. Or contact the organizers for christmas in april if it’s still around and get their insights.

Te’o doesn’t get drafted 1st Rd I seen this coming. The NFL pretty much said he wasn’t worth 1st Rd money

That certainly was realized today. Heck, even a Grease thought he was going first round. Good call, Lenny.

The heck they with that party they’re having now? Extend to the next day?

There are a few things we might surmise:

    • that the Te’o camp didn’t actually attend NFL draft HQ spoke volumes (remember video of a few weeks ago, Te’o slapping hands w/what was it? Miami Dolphins players?)

    • Looking like you’re doing capoeira instead of dominating like you were know for regarding every game until that national champainship does not seem to translate well into materializing into “first round draft pick.”

    • so much time on the ‘phone resulting into being, well, duped might very well lead to money holders’ questions as to whether it’s worth paying a guy whose judgment they might — with all their God-given rights — question; remember . . . on the playing field, you have split seconds to make a determination about something.

    • the biggie: remember the Tebow. Can “best of college footballers” do as well in the pros?

Day 2 cometh . . .will that end up better for a Te’o?

You can almost hear the saran wrap detaching and the paper plate packaging being busted open fo’ make leftovers.

Is the bad fortune fortune for him only for today? Heck, even KHON had technical probs showing feed (pardon the pun) from the Te’o pahty today, no?

  140. cocobean April 25, 2013 9:14 pm

    Excuses for Teo.

no team was willing to risk upsetting their fan base by picking Manti in the 1st round. It’s been documented that he ranked 2nd just below L. Armstrong as the most disliked athlete.

Fans for whatever team that drafted him tonight probably would have booed the choice and ESPN would have made a big deal out of it.

the NFL is changing. Passing, pass protection and pass targets seem to be more valued now than runners and run blockers on the offensive side. Rushing the passer, covering receivers and clogging the middle with big bodies seems to be the emphasis on defense.

No runner and only one linebacker-an inside one were taken in the 1st. The traditional inside run stopping LB is not as highly valued as before.

the most likely excuse for Manti going MIA in the 1st is that all the draft decision makers have been reading this blog since Dec’12. Manti not going in the 1st had nothing to do with being catfished or his performance against ‘Bama nor this measureables at the combine. It was mostly about the power of this blog and the other excuses stated above.

  141. kev-1 April 25, 2013 9:17 pm

Not really surprised that Te’o fell out of the 1st RD. He should go tomorrow. There were several teams that have LB needs that filled other needs instead. Maybe figuring that nobody would touch him in the first. I AM surprised that Georgia’s Alec Ogletree went ahead of him though. I guess getting catfished is worse than DUI and other arrests. Oh well.

My Steelers ended up with the best LB in the draft anyway in Jarvis Jones.

  165. Chicken Grease April 25, 2013 11:01 pm

Does a Grease think he can play?

I have a feeling he’ll get lost in the shuffle. A Grease said many moons ago — and, ironically, touched upon by a cocobean, again, above (sorry to cite you so much, cocobean, but, that IS a nice analysis) with the “game has changed” comment — that the offensive game is the thing.

Case in “immediate vicinity” point: Koepernick. Now, forget that he ended up getting faced by my beloved Ravens (and a Grease’ll admit, Baltimore just might have a stake in Teo in the coming days; whew. Had a scare today when the NFL announcer started, “The Baltimore Ravens select . . . M . . .” and a Grease thought was going be you-know-who; ended up being an Elam, yes!!!!! Not only was NOT you-know-who, but a guy whose last name’s shared with one of UH-Manoa’s greatest [if not THE greatest] kickers) . . . this was a guy whom our very own Warriors faced in most of his career at Nevada. Or at least where it counted (remember how he-would-become-the-darling-of-last-football-season got SO riled up when Dan Kelley made that sweet field goal in the 12-1 season?)

But Koepernick ends up doing well in the NFL.

Kinda’ see a renaissance, retooling, enhancement, and refining of the offensive game. It’s working and the fans demand high offense, great passing (great passing and evasion of the defense from a guy who the “mid-major” Warriors managed to irritate more than a bit).

Is it any coincidence that Ray Lewis retired in the same year he had a chance to win one more Superbowl? Like Frodo going on the silver ship, think Ray Lewis is taking with him the refine air of defense.

    Indeed. Can a Te’o play?

Because the NFL’s gonna need a bunch of NBA-class celebrity-like defense players to begin to put up a new front against offensive plays, overall.

Are any of you spinning it? Ask yourself.

It was annoying last year when Germany was demanding the repayment of “sovereign debts” when all the EU countries had given up their sovereignty when they joined the union. They could not print their way out and they could not pay because they had no sovereignty to do so. And the ECB refused to share. Now Merkel is talking about a political federation. Which will do the same thing, like our states must balance their budgets and cannot print their own currency (so far anyway) and the Fed only does a little revenue sharing. So with a federation there will be an EU deficit but the former sovereigns will still have to balance their budgets.

I do agree wholeheartedly with this article. I would like at least to see adoption or abortion as a choice, even for a moment. I dislike the same old line abortion was not even an option for her’. Why not?

Perhaps romance writers or editors think the romance reader is very conservative and traditional, and with right-wing ideas or, moreover, that they cannnot connect with a heroine with different ideas. But considering the million of books who are erotica and are sold, well, I think the readers are more open-minded that what those writers or editors think. Even if they are against abortion, I think they could accept the heroine chosing something different.

Anyone I’m not very fond of children in romance books. Being a mother, I find them very unrealistic.

I think we romance readers are ready for more realistic romances. In contemporary and in historical.

Heh, indeed. Mr. 3-Prong, you are more articulate and straightforward than a Grease on this matter. The world needs more of the type of succinct clarity that you demonstrate here, 3-Prong. Bravo.

Heard Petino got his tattoo. A Louisville “L” on his left shoulder blade with “2013 NCAA Natuonal Champions” inscibed. Man of his word I’d say.

  210. Tremendous things here. I am very happy to peer your article. Thanks so much and I’m looking forward to touch you. Will you kindly drop me a e-mail?

  211. Chicken Grease April 26, 2013 7:58 am

A Grease can sing ALL of those, A-House. Sing it well. Uh, minus out Where the Boys Are, At the Hop, and Mocking Bird Hill — the first tune fir obviousa reasons, the other two, a Grease dunno ’em.

    A Grease is a mean Karaoke-ist.

  212. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 26, 2013 8:18 am

Apparently Hawaii offered this USC QB commit.

Hey…I’ll be the judge of that. Show up at the next Tsai-ko Oldies Karaoke Call!

“At the Hop” is a little too fast for A-House to sing, I’m guessing, but I can sure visualize him dancing it… 🙂

  214. A-House April 26, 2013 8:27 am

    grease:

are you ready to “karaoke” with the Tsaikos?

many have great voices – LizKauai, the late Ragusu Bagasu, Pride, etc.

me no go cause to “loud” and no can sing – would broke da mike system!

mocking bird hill goes all the way back to 1953 when it was #1 in USA music – Patti Page

  216. Chicken Grease April 26, 2013 9:09 am

Heh. Karaoke. I believe that, not having to take a Grease’s word ’bout it, yes. You guys must have a great time.

Thanks for that USC/QB/UH-M detail, IWWTHM.

I like the short ’50s tunes. Love singing the Elvis gospel songs.

Almost 10am alreadies. What? Tsai in meetings or somefin?
