Diocemy Saint Juste

Because of space limitations, the story on Diocemy Saint Juste did not appear in today’s newspaper. Here it is:

Diocemy Saint Juste, a speedy running back from Santaluces High in Florida, told the Star-Advertiser he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.

Saint Juste is 5 feet 9 and 180 pounds.

“He’s built like a big back, but he has the speed of a little back,” Santaluces offensive coordinator Matt Starr said. “He’s unbelievable. The first (defender) is definitely not going to tackle him.”

Saint Juste said he is capable of running 40 yards in 4.42 seconds. His best time in the 100-meter dash is 10.8 seconds.

Sainte Juste missed four games because of a hip pointer this past season. He rushed for 1,243 rushing yards, an average of 7.49 yards per carry, and 16 touchdowns. He also caught 14 passes for 114 yards and a score.

“He’s definitely electric,” Starr said. “He’s a great all-around player. He can catch the ball out of the backfield. He blocks extremely well. He never gives up on any play.”

Starr said there were at least three times when he and head coach Daryl Drinkwater looked at their offensive charts for the next play because it appeared Saint Juste was stopped.

“The next thing you know the crowd is going nuts because he’s breaking another tackle,” Starr said.

Starr said Saint Juste had six scoring plays covering at least 50 yards.

“We can’t compare him to anybody else because we’ve never coached anybody like him,” Starr said. “He’s the most electric kid we’ve ever coached. He’s a great kid. He’s a great athlete. Nobody has a bad thing to say about him. Hawaii is getting a great one.”

Saint Juste was born in Haiti and moved to Central Florida as a young child. He moved to South Florida for high school. Saint Juste was under the proverbial radar because he changed schools between his sophomore and junior years.

In September, the Warriors were the first to offer Saint Juste a scholarship. Since then more than a dozen schools made recruiting pitches, including Illinois, Rutgers, TCU, Nevada, Memphis and Colorado State.

Saint Juste said the choice was easy.

“I like everything about Hawaii — the environment, the location, the atmosphere, the coaches, the players,” Saint Juste said.

Saint Juste completed his recruiting visit Sunday morning, a stay that included paddling and meeting with academic counselors. He said three Florida-raised Warriors —receiver Allen Sampson and defensive backs Ne’Quan Phillips and Marrell Jackson — served as hosts.

One of the best attractions? “The food is amazing,” Saint Juste said.

Glad he enjoyed his stay and chose to be a Warrior! Food…definitely chose the right place.

    Ohayoooooooooogozaimasu!!!!!

Well. Ben Jay’s first day onna job.

And, well, let’s face it: there are more song lyrics for him.

Saved the best for la . . . actually, saved the best for now. You remember this li’l ditty from the Jacko himself, I suppose, to the tune of Michael’s Ben:

Ben, the AD search committee need look no more

Lower campus can’t stand another Steve-blunder

    Your challenges are well known

Treat UH athletics like it’s your home

And you, Ben Jay, will see

You won’t end up like Jimmy D.

Excellent. And this guy comes from FLORIDA and he’s noticing the diff’ between his sunny and our sunny. 🙂

Any local player who gets interest by UH and, instead, chooses the mainland can simply go there.

local players know when they go away and it doesn’t work out, they can always transfer back to the UH.

  17. Stephen Tsai January 14, 2013 6:49 am

The next two weekends will be the local recruits.

I thought it was interesting that Mr. Honolulu — Ne’Quan Phillips — is the ocean-sports guide. He’s really emerging as a team leader.

phillips is the best corner on the team.

  19. HawaiiMongoose January 14, 2013 7:02 am

Welcome Diocemy, you made the right decision! Time to hit the books and ensure you finish this year strong in the classroom, so that when next season opens against USC, you can be on the field and eligible to play.

And — Mr. Tsai, if you haven’t already implied so — these recruits have most probably seen a Ne’Quan in action. Having him taking them around in any case, well, that’s like a new Avenger bring given the tour by Capt. America or Hawkeye or something!

  21. Leron January 14, 2013 7:16 am

Ne’quan and Marell probably also pointed out to the recruits that it is possible to get on the field at UH as Freshmen.

  43. lowtone123 January 14, 2013 9:03 am

Big time get. Hopefully the hip is healed and more players from Florida make their way to Manoa.

  44. jimmy the lock January 14, 2013 9:08 am

Boosters, referred to by the NCAA as “representatives of the institution’s athletic interests,” include anyone who has:

    • Provided a donation in order to obtain season tickets for any sport at the university.

    • Participated in or has been a member of an organization promoting the university’s athletics programs.

    • Made financial contributions to the athletic department or to a university booster organization.

    • Arranged for or provided employment for enrolled student-athletes.

    • Assisted or has been requested by university staff to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes.

    • Assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student athletes or their families.

    • Been involved otherwise in promoting university athletics.

Once an individual is identified as a “representative of the institution’s athletics interests,” the person retains that identity forever.

  45. Shoko January 14, 2013 9:10 am

Makes me wonder if I can afford tickets to see a UNLV game in the future. Impressive eye candy, tho.

“The 60,000-seat stadium proposal will feature a world-record 100-yard long video screen, or 40 yards longer than the current one found in Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.”

#57 AL is correct that any resemblance to tommui is purely coincidental.

  60. jimmy the lock January 14, 2013 10:19 am

    @al

The writing, format, phrasing are similar. Plus I remember in my lurking days that you mentioned both are the same. Or was that false al?

  61. jimmy the lock January 14, 2013 10:23 am

  68. jimmy the lock January 14, 2013 10:34 am

I believe there was confirmation. Besides, the more interesting news item is who will be the next recruit to inform the SA that they are going to be a Warrior?

    @SteveM

All false al’s sound like al. But when in doubt it is not al. Written words don’t speak so I don’t know what al sounds like. 😆

  69. al January 14, 2013 10:35 am

well, i didn’t say that stevem.

i’ve met mr. sinope, the mysterious one. he made me swear to secrecy.

well…you know that aaron zwhalen reconfirmed his verbal commitment this weekend. his stock has risen…espn rates him top ten qb. we’ll have to wait to see this holy grail applicant because he goes on a mission for 2 years before he dons the warrior jersey.

  71. al January 14, 2013 10:41 am

i am thinking we’ll get a couple more verbals after the weekend’s visitors confer with family.

  77. kifi January 14, 2013 10:51 am

I don’t know. Of course I need to respect other people and their religious beliefs. But I certainly believe that Manti Te’o did more for church awareness while playing football at Notre Dame than he would have had he gone on a mission to Walla Walla, Washington. But of course, part of the mission process is the growth of the individual during the two years away from family without any money.

    #17,

Hoping that this huge local catch doesn’t slip through UH’s grasp to the mainland competitor…… who flew in last week for a home visit.

Also hoping that Kagawa, Sataraka, and Taleni are among the local prospects who at least get tripped to UH. Sometimes the Plan B recruits turn out to have been deserving of being Plan A recruits to begin with……as turned out to be case with Plan B signees Beau Yap & Moses Samia. Definitely don’t want any cases like what happened with Coen, Hala’api’api, Masaniai, and Su’a…..who apparently were evaluated as Plan C prospects…..but instead who turned out to be deserving of Plan A status….being passed over and not even tripping to UH.

Beau Yap was always Plan A to Rich Miano…..but was Plan B to Mack.

Not everyone thought Samia was going to play baseball. Samia never even got contacted until January…..after being offered by Baylor. Same with Yap.

Just can’t understand why UH wouldn’t at least trip Kailua HS DT Jeremiah Taleni…..who already has firm scholie offers from at least 2 BCS Conference programs.

  120. kapakahi January 14, 2013 12:17 pm

    #119,

Hopefully Powell contacts Taleni real soon……otherwise will all be moot anyways…..since looking like Taleni ready to commit to the Pitt Panthers.

    http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=141&f=2455&t=11170232&p=1

Even if Taleni decides against Pitt, he still has a firm Pac-12 scholie offer too.

  123. kapakahi January 14, 2013 12:25 pm

    #121,

Rich Miano almost quit because of all that “shibai”. Part of why Ron Lee “retired” too.

  124. Derek January 14, 2013 12:32 pm

Jeezy33, who is better for our needs, Masters or Kirkwood? Can we get both? Is Barker in the mix now that he has decommitted from UCLA? ESPN has Zwahlen and Tulimasealii in the top 300, 4 star recruits. Tigi Hill and Tuaau are 3 stars. I don’t see Ekuale as a commit, but I did see Keti. I guess it depends on the website. ESPN already has Saint Juste with Hawaii. That was fast. Also, Higdon.

  125. Derek January 14, 2013 12:35 pm

If Gib Arnold needs a point guard, he already has a commitment. WR John Ursua will be with the program in 2014 after his church mission. He’s a terrific point guard. Check out his youtube highlights for yourself.

JMHO but good to hear that Sataraka will likely be among those local prospects that have been invited to trip to UH.

  129. Old School Dave January 14, 2013 12:43 pm

Ah, Inoke Breckterfield. That explains why Pitt is recruiting here.

  130. al January 14, 2013 12:45 pm

gibber well aware of ursua’s talents. however, norm’s still bigger than gibber.

also, a lot could be said about miah losing the edge in football this year because of his crossover sport.

  131. jeezy33 January 14, 2013 1:15 pm

    125. Honestly, it comes down to personal preference. I really dont know the answer. Elroy Masters on video looks phenomenal. Kirkwood, has size and unreal athletic ability. Still raw and has big time upside.

I think the best answer is both. It was evident that UH was done recruiting WRs. But when guys with huge upside show interest, Chow said he was going to find room regardless of position. Both guys looks like they could turn out into something special given they work hard, take care of business, and trust the coaches.

And from what I’ve read, yes, it looks like were back in the Ammon Barker hunt. I really like him too. Kind of reminds me of Cody Hoffman from BYU on film. Obviously Hoffman has proven himself at a high D1 level but style in play and size look familiar.

gobows – anyone who has watched, listened or attended a UH game of any sport is a booster for life period. It doesn’t matter if you donated any $$$ or paid for a ticket. In general if you where born in the state of Hawaii you are a booster. We (Na Wahine Softball Booster Club) tell all our members to error on the safe side an have nothing to do with recruits or even their families. Now there is some gray area when it comes to family members who are recruits but even those you can not promote going to UH to them.

Seems rough but that’s the NCAA.

  145. Former UH Athlete January 14, 2013 3:43 pm

Time will tell in how these recruits turn out, but I’m not going to say Chow is a better recruiter than Jones until we see how these recruits develop. It definitely seems like Chows recruiting network is wider and reaches farther than Jones’.

With Chow’s connections, UH is now getting Florida and Utah preps, which were two states UH rarely got players from in the past (mostly by way of transfer).

  146. Warrior Dave January 14, 2013 3:51 pm

    #145 Former UH Athlete

It doesn’t matter to me the names and star ratings of the players that come in.

I base success on what you do with what you have. Too early to judge Chow but JJ had 2 or 3 losing seasons out of 10 I think. That’s pretty successful.

  147. Buffoman January 14, 2013 4:02 pm

Has that large Polynesian young man,I believe a DT who, I possibly read on this blog migrated from the South Pacific to the Pacific Northwest, still interested in becoming a Warrior or has he decided to go with the glitz and play for a Pac 12 school in the area or was I dreaming, which is a real possibility?

  148. jiminy cricket January 14, 2013 4:42 pm

#145, remember JJ only had a $50K recruiting budget and no soap in the showers. Now, the recruting budget is 3-4x larger. that’s why UH recruiters under JJ could not fly all over the place like they can now. What JJ did with the meager UH resources was miraculous.

Man! I owe you an apology…

I was starting to wonder where the “stand-offishness” of your comments last month regarding Te’o and the celebration of his accomplishments was coming from.

Then someone posted about how his Dad was starting a boycott of the S-A because of the “unflattering” picture it ran following the NC game That poster said he saw it on another forum but stated that it may be unfounded.

Apparently, there is more foundation to that as I was watching KITV report it this afternoon!

JJ did A LOT for this program. When all is said and done, I would imagine the same could be said for Chow. Now that the sting of the first go round has faded, the reality has set back in for many (I include myself here) that there were/are bound to be early struggles that only time and recruiting will fix. Well, I am not sure the average fan understands the significant gains in recruiting that Chow has made here at UH. If the trend continues, good things are bound to happen.

Perhaps Mr. Te’o forgot to read the SA in the weeks leading up to the Championship game when there was feature after feature praising his son. Not to mention the special section they ran on Manti alone. The picture he is upset over is unfortunately a fair depiction of what Alabama did to Notre Dame and its star player. The SA would have looked pretty silly if they tried to sugar coat what happened.

Whenever someone has come here to bash Manti, I have tried to rise to his defense. I will continue to defend the Te’o son. However, I do not support the Te’o father in his comments. I understand the sentiment and feeling he must have felt, but that kind of comment only makes him look like his you know what no stink. Should have kept that comment between him and the wife.

Let’s see how manti responds from here on out-keep the faith. That photo will forever be motivation for manti, and for us”.

might not be perfect, but i can see where emotions for the te’o family ran much deeper then most if any of us would understand. who here had a son play a BCS national championship? for me, father te’o gets a pass. i don’t think he is anywhere near as bad as mr. wie-remember that guy?

  200. d1shima January 15, 2013 6:00 am

    Great Morning All!

    Exciting morning so far…

    Have a terrific dat erryboddy!

    HiHo….

  201. Bugaz January 15, 2013 6:13 am

So sorry to hear about Blake. Best of luck to him in his pursuit of happiness

  202. Bugaz January 15, 2013 6:16 am

And best of luck to Coach Chow in righting the ship.

  203. Bugaz January 15, 2013 6:20 am

Talent itself does not win games if the mind is not right. I guess all season there was no one snap and clear. Gotta get it together!

  204. Chicken Grease January 15, 2013 6:25 am

Good morning [ohayoooooooooogozaimasu!!!!!!] WarriorNY, d1shima, and Bugaz x3!!!! 🙂

  205. kapakahi January 15, 2013 7:06 am

    #190,

    What this expected or unexpected?

Turned out to be totally unexpected by the coaches…..but not by some players.

JMHO that’s sign that coaches aren’t all in tune with some players…..starters obviously included.

Like was posted a few days ago…..unexpected…..not in a good way for the program.

    Probably more unexpected still expected.

    Hmmm…..

  206. kapakahi January 15, 2013 7:10 am

    #190,

That’s why more OL recruits needed!

  207. da808 January 15, 2013 7:14 am

Papa Te’o forgot to notice the picture that is still on the Sports page, Kinda pilau IMHO!

  208. Otis Irons January 15, 2013 7:16 am

I’d like to express my pleasure for reading this amazing post. As the article contains a lots of important information about smart phones technologies, so I’ll share it with my friends and family. I’m sure they’re going to get use of it as I did to update their own devices & accessories.

  209. wasabi January 15, 2013 7:19 am

205….you seem to know more than anyone else before ot happens. I know there are more players not returning so I would guess you do too?? Folks might be surprised to find not only benchwarmers hitting the road….

  210. gobows January 15, 2013 7:19 am

    JM2375, KEV-1, CG

that quote was posted on the Manti Te’o fan club fb page, and has since been removed, probably BT got over the embarrassment. maybe someone reminded him that ND isn’t the 1st team to get blown out in the bcs championship game.

and now BT, like many others have learnt, that nothing really disappears from the internet.

    http://www.chicagonow.com/chicago-sports-media-watch/2013/01/father-of-manti-teo-blacklists-hawaii-newspaper-432/

  211. gobows January 15, 2013 7:21 am

    expect the unexpected…

  212. Roll Tide January 15, 2013 7:27 am

Why is Papa Teo getting all the publicity? Dude don’t play the game, it’s his son who should be interviewed. Typical Punahou parent, ala B.J. Wie, trying to control the destiny of his child!

Bama steam rolled that Irish defense in bowling to the BCS National Championship! Rollllllllllllllll-Tide!!!

  213. kapakahi January 15, 2013 7:36 am

    #209 & #211,

    Yup!

Still a diehard Warrior supporter…..but knowing certain stuff…..like nowadays…..sometimes makes it tough to still be one.

Although DG and others no longer direct factors with the program…..the residual effects are obviously still being felt.
