A good bye
After being hired as head coach, Norm Chow met with Mike Edwards in a closed-door meeting.
Edwards had undergone shoulder surgery that would prevent him from contact drills until the summer. Still, Chow detailed the blueprint for the program and asked Edwards to be a construction leader. It was a risky proposal. Edwards had transferred to UH in July 2011 in search of a fresh start. He spent most of the 2011 season focusing on football, academics and absorbing Richard Torres’ tutorial sessions.
According to the coaches, Edwards became fully invested in the leadership role. That meant encouraging teammates during contact drills in the spring. That meant representing the Warriors at the Mountain West media preview. That also meant sacrificing his beloved jersey No. 2. He was given No. 1, the leadership’s jersey.
Chow did his best to showcase Edwards’ talents, even if it meant the attention — and success — would hasten his UH departure. Edwards was named the No. 1 kickoff returner. There also were plays designed for him on offense. Early in the season, Chow named Edwards as a co-captain.
Chow and Edwards both used the phrase “great friendship” to describe their relationship.
Today, Edwards is signing the papers to apply for the 2013 NFL draft.
“I’m thankful for my time in Hawaii,” Edwards said.
* * * * *
It appears Ne’Quan Phillips is ready to step into a leadership role.
His nickname is “Mr. Honolulu.”
First???
Woo Hoo….Second day of the year and I’m first….my year is now complete…LOL
Again, Congrats to Mike Edwards and best of luck to him in the NFL!!!
#1?
good luck on a long and prosperous career mike edwards! you will represent hawaii well!
edwards island baby.
Aloha kakahiaka!
Good Luck Mr. Edwards! Thank you for being a Warrior!
Interesting read about the MWC!
http://csnbbs.com/sh…=610315&page=10
Quote:
Just heard from a good source that the MWC has asked for a sit down with SMU, Houston, UTEP and Tulsa and the Boise deal has piqued BYU’s attention.
SDSU has until 31Jan get decide if it wants back in or MWC moves on.
Heres the article http://voices.idahos…state_exit_fees
I think it’s time UH gets its collective okole into the MWC.
It’s never good to be the only football-only member. Nobody wants to be Sacramento State’s baseball team.
Mahalo, Mahalo, Mahalo plenty Mr. Edward. Now do your thing in the nfl & you sure looks good in a bronco’s uni. Go Warriors!
Howzit, Gang!
Aloha, Mike Edwards! Hoping and wishing for the best for you and your family!
Mahalo for being a True Warrior!
Good morning everyone!
ST — I see your point about being a football-only member, but how much cost and resistance will there be from the other UH sports?
Top 10!
Shucks.
Enjoy the day!
If Jay can convince Thompson and the member presidents to take the rest of UH’s other sports, I would say that he was a very good hire. However, I think that is an obstacle as big as bringing down the athletic departments deficit.
If the MWC tops out with only 12 members, then it’s not imperative for UH to join for non-football sports since the other 11 MWC schools may actually prefer round-robin rather than divisional competition in basketball.
But if the MWC goes to 14 or more members and will have divisional play in basketball and other non-football sports, UH needs to move those sports back. The travel will be only a bit worse than in the Big West since divisional games will be in California, Nevada and Idaho.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
I read the some of the details in the Idaho Statesman on the BSU/MW agreement. It appears that the exit fee from the MW should some of the MW have a roving eye is only $5 mil.
ST – any talk about increasing the exit fee?
I don’t know if our basketball/volleyball/softball teams make $$$ should be make the final 6/32/16/8/4 in BB or whatever finals we have for VB and SB.
If we do, as I understand the agreement between UH and MW, as we are only a football member in the MW, we don’t have to share the $$ made in the BB/VB/SB tourneys – assuming we get $$ there.
Question: would we be better off being a full member in the MW?
ST, This is where the new AD has to earn his paycheck. as long as we are a “football only”school then MWC will always have us by the Alas.
Here is a ESPN about SDSU, Boise and MWC expansion
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/8803804/mountain-west-conference-give-san-diego-state-aztecs-first-option-join
I’m sure there are other teams with most sports but not football. Denver may be one and Seattle University may be another, to offset Hawaii being only a football member in the MWC. This would be on a “need only” for the MWC. I like UH in the Big West for the other sports. Recruiting and cheaper team travel is my main reason. Also, closer to home so more UH fans live in the area and it would be more affordable for UH’s home fans to attend some road games on the way to Vegas. Also cheaper to pay for a smaller team, to travel to Hawaii than a MWC team.
Hi there, just was aware of your blog through Google, and located that it’s really informative. I’m going to be careful for brussels. I will appreciate if you happen to continue this in future. Many other people will probably be benefited out of your writing. Cheers!
Here is the actual written agreement with Boise State and the MWC per the Idaho Stateman.
http://media.idahost…S3EZp.So.36.pdf
Talk about transparency from Boise State?
I know it would be easier for me if UH gets all its sports into the MW. That way I don’t have to keep track of two conferences. Yes, I’m selfish and lazy that way.
Edward signs his papers to apply for the NFL draft now can Norm chow sign his to Retire. Happy New Year Everybody. CheeeHoooo!!!
Now we know who the ssebnile one is here. Excellent post!
Good Morning and Good Fortune to Mike Edwards!
Rain Rain Go Away … I miss Sunlight. 🙁
Thank you Mike for choosing to play here. Good luck at the next level. Make us proud.
Somebody necessarily assist to make significantly articles I might state. That is the very first time I frequented your website page and up to now? I surprised with the research you made to make this particular post incredible. Wonderful process!
Wished Mike used another year to
perfect his man cover skills at corner.
Aloha Mike!!!!! Good luck ,all the best!!!
That my friends, is how a coach develops a leader and breeds an environment for success.
Good Luck Mr Edwards! Looking forward to seeing you on Sundays, unless you’re wearing a Raiders, Chiefs, Broncos or Jets uniform.
I’m sure Chow will be making calls to all his NFL friends to help Edward’s draft status.
I’m actually surprised that Ne’Quan (a Floridian) will be fulfilling the leadership hole left by Edwards. Very cool to hear that he’s bought into the Local Style and is “Mr Honolulu.” Sounds like Chow is doing an excellent job off the field. On-field results will come as his recruits develop.
Good luck to him and his entire family. Thanks for being a Warrior.
Best of luck to Mike Edwards. I really wanted to see him get better and help our team for one more year. But he needs to do what he needs to do. Heres to another Warrior having a successful career in the NFL.
Good morning Tsaikos!
Best wishes to Mike Edwards.
Good luck to the VolleyBows as they journey to Provo to begin the 2013 season.
GO WARRIORS!

Is this a feasible conference format?
29…yes because we were so successful this season. A true leader needs to get all players to buy in …not just treat a handful like his BFF’s. What a high school girl….
Mr.Honolulu is helping to try get those Florida recruits to join the team. There’s talk of hopefully having an all-Florida defensive backfield in the future. That would be NICE.
It’s been a long time since UH recruited a “black” QB. any special reason? none since Mikey Carter – that’s over 20 years.
Just watch the bowl games and see how many BCS schools have a black QB.
Why oh why and I don’t know why it’s raining so much when the meterologists say nice and sunny?
#34
The only teams that I would swap are Nevad and New Mexico. Other then that, I think the rest of the teams fit in well if it was a split conference.
Shoko, re #34, the lineup you propose makes the most sense geographically. The problem is that Boise State may want to be placed in the western division since it recruits so much in California. For that to happen, either SDSU would have to remain out of the conference and be replaced by an eastern division school, or the MWC would have to expand to 14 by keeping SDSU and adding two eastern division schools.
Potential candidates for eastern division additions include SMU, Houston, UTEP, Tulsa and UTSA. There are reports that the MWC is currently talking to several of these schools.
shoko…
looks good to me.
Anyone else hoping the divisions names are “Western” and “Mountain”.
#34 & #40: that’s right… SDSU is still stuck in Big East limbo. The MWC will be paying for all/part of Boise’s exit fee but no word yet on SDSU. Boise want’s SDSU back in to make sure they still get to Southern California for recruiting purposes.
A Grease was first on the FIRST day of the year. (go look.) 😀
Only reason I have Nevada and UNLV in the same division is because they are in-state rivals.
I figured since Boise State is in the Mountain Time Zone they should be grouped with other schools in that time zone. If they add other teams (CUSA schools), I don’t know how the division would look like since the CUSA schools are in the MTZ (I think).
They could call the two divisions Pacific and Mountain. Western sounds just as good, tho.
The scheduled format could be that of other 12-team conferences. Five divisional games and three cross-divisional games alternating between years.
I don’t know if you can get Olympic sport Coaches to go all in to the MWC. Thought the competition was better for them in BWC?
Tsai — Re: Collective Okole
What would be the benefit of having all sports in the MWC? I keep reading that we might be better off as is — meaning we get to have our share of the MWC football revenue — and still save money by having our other teams only having to fly to California for Big West competition.
Is it truly that much better for us to be a full-fledged member of the MWC?
BIK
If the MWC expands to 12-16 teams, Hawaii need to become a full member already. MWC Basketball is on the rise and it would help Hawaii basketball team in recruiting. I can see the change in football recruiting already since Chow took over and Hawaii is in the MWC. Just imagine recruiting in the expanded MWC?
I hope Ben Yee has a better grasp of the BCS landscape versus JD…I think we played our cards wrong, when you get down to the bottom-line. The landscape is still “fluid”, so UH has to find the “best” place to be in respect to future changes/movement.
I’m pretty sure I read that SDSU doesn’t have to pay an exit fee to the Big East if Boise leaves. I have little doubt that SDSU will be in the Mountain West shortly.
This is all great news for Hawaii as the nightmare scenario for us is always if certain schools break away from the Mountain West/WAC/Conference USA and form a western conference of 8-10 schools that doesn’t include UH just like how the MWC was formed. I’ve been afraid that with Boise in play that they could partner with BYU, Nevada and Fresno to be the nucleus of a new conference.
With regards to exit fees being increased, those fees haven’t stopped any school from moving conferences recently. Maryland is on the hook for $50 Million to the ACC to go to the Big 10! I think conferences need to come up with other poison pills to keep their members in line.
Ben Yee?
Aloha, Patti.
Waltz your way there!
Nice write up ST…thanks!
And again, good luck Mike! Thanks for bringing that “swag” to the islands!
#37. There’s Ivin Jasper and he was pretty good too.
RE: #46
Bigislandkurt — I surmise the advantage would be that the league would be less likely to vote you off the island if you were a full/all sports member — or exclude you with the justification they have to accommodate all-sport members first.
Spooky. Say, has any league dumped a member before? Is there a penalty or severance package?
SteveM . . .
Seems not to be so much dumping as it was abandonment.
tommui, you watching my Big East boyfriend Charlie Strong? Touchdown in the first 15 seconds of the game.
The Big East dumped Temple several years ago for not meeting the attendence requirement.
Not too mention the national exposure other sports would have if in the MW.
This is IMHO is what we need the MWC to look like.
http://nawahine.smugmug.com/photos/i-TcTqLBB/0/L/i-TcTqLBB-L.jpg
Now if BYwho came back then drop Houston….
16-team conference seems like alot. I remember the old WAC where there were 16 schools all divided into quadrants. The more schools you have in a conference the more kala that has to be shared.
Shoko true that but as I understand this is what MWC wants in the end. I like myself like the idea of a 12 member conference with a playoff.
#56 – was enjoying the Louisville game until Florida scored.
Hope Louisville can hold on and score somemore.
With the LSU lost and if Florida loses (and Alabama -hopefully), maybe the mystique of the SEC will be lost too!
Yea, I like 12 members, too. Wouldn’t want a 16-team MW conference only for it to disolve like the old WAC later down the road.
BOWWAR re #48 – don’t forget our entrance into the MW was engineered by MRC and Freitas, not JD.
Nytal!
Florida offense having a complete meltdown. Since when did Louisville learn how to play SEC defense?
Oh, thats right. Strong was the DC for the Gators back in the day.
How to counter Florida speed?
Go get you some FL speed….30+ Florida natives on UL roster.
Charlie Strong is smaht, too!
65: I think that was the ultimate vote of “no confidence” of JD…We probably took the “best possible” choice since we had not explored or prepared for others. MRC and Freitas didn’t make a good decision either…End result, we’re worse off than when we were in the WAC.
It would be fair to say that Florida wasn’t prepared for Louisville. Nice job, Muschamp!
I’m not sure if we’re worse off than we were in the WAC. The WAC is essentially dead in football.
Enjoying the Sugar Bowl. But sick of mayhem man. i think i’ll switch to Progressive.
Cayman Shutter to skip senior year and enter CFL Draft? Huh?
Shutter would be a good pick up for the Jets.
Nice to see Charlie Strong doing so well. He was a defensive coordinator at Florida under Urban Meyer before he got the Louisville job.
One thing about the state of Florida football. No question they have a lot of speed to burn.
good luck cayman shutter.
down to five qb’s now…
all of a sudden we have 25 scholarships for new recruits.
all of a sudden we have 25 scholarships for new recruits.
oops
Al, I hope one of the 25 recruits is the Holy Grail! There’s gotta be a good dual QB out there.
Derek, Florida might have speed. But we BEAT them! Can’t wait for the 2014 season so we can kick Texas A$$. And we will beat them up BIG TIME! Bet Florida is sorry that they did not hire him when they had the chance. But he has a white wife and Hapa kids so he was discriminated. We love Charlie as he promised we would be BCS bowling in three years. He kept his promise. Now he has a HUGE bonus coming from Tom Jurich. Don’t miss the Cotton Bowl. Going to be a great game!!!
Edwards-kun . . . sayonaraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!! Gambatte!!!!!!! Sayooooooooooooooooooonaraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!! [a Grease violently waves w/his hand.]
I think Shutter’s move makes sense since he probably still has Canadian citizenship and will have a better chance of making a CFL roster, since they can only have a limited amount of “foreigners” on the roster. I dunno if Shutter has the skills to make any professional football team, but his chances are better in Canada.
We could definitely use another “lights out” QB and RB…Are we still in the running for the Florida RB?
UH needs a game breaker or two at running back (no disrespect to the current RBs). Someone along the lines of a John White (Utah).
Holy Smokes! Cayman is………Canadian?
Ey?!
Manti jersey from POHS….check. Anybody got connections to get it autographed?……please? Hehe
…..and.Go Warriors!

is johnny macon black? didn’t he take over after glen freitas who took over for carter.
Michael J Fox, Leslie Nielsen, William Shatner, Paul Shaffer, the list goes on of Canadians. Nice national anthem, I must say.
Just saw on the news that Cayman Shutter is leaving UH & will enter the CFL draft
Lance Reynolds a 30+ year BYU coaching veteran, now retired, is a possible candidate for Offensive Coordinator per Deseret News’ Harmon.

hawaii to reno is shorter than hawaii to vegas. and hawaii to albuquerque is another 500 miles farther than vegas.
albuquerque is in the mountains, same mountains that air force, colorado st, and wyoming sit on.
swap nevada and new mexico for what?
#84 diocemy st juste is the man.
Wait?
What?
Cayman Shutter is leaving U-H with one more season of eligibility to enter the CFL draft?
Huh?
Good luck!
I think?

sounds like another buddy getting a paid vacation in hawaii. jj had mouse davis. mack had dick tomey. nc had tommy lee…
i actually believe that we’ll now go after another qb since zwhalen will go on a mission.
edwards and shutter leaving opens up two more scholarships giving us 25 i believe. i think coaches were prepared for this and may have had 26 thus giving one to charles clay.
the extra scholies now open the door to picking the best athlete available.
gobows…more about familiarity and trust.

@98,
That Arkansas QB decommitted or get his offer yanked or something. Maybe.
maybe lance reynolds can improve the play of the o line
Makes sense for Cayman. He didn’t get many decent opportunities this past season and next year the field is more crowded. As a 4th year Junior he might graduate in June. As a Canadian citizen he has a decent chance to make a roster as a backup up North. Currently I don’t think that there is a single Canuck QB in the CFL — they are all imports. Cayman could be a fourth QB on a team & not count against the import limit. Not saying that I understand the import rule…
How can you be 3rd string at Hawaii and hope to make the CFL? Timmy Chang and Colt Brenned(sp) could not make it.
#101,
New Arkansas HC Brett Bielema (former Wisconsin HC) revoked Cogswell’s scholie offer.

The exodus might not be done yet.
CFL draft
Players become eligible for the Canadian College Draft four years after their first year of play at university.
CFL draft eligibility is tied to neither college eligibility nor high school graduation. Typically non-import players become eligible for the draft four years after beginning college or university, provided that their name has appeared on the roster of a college or university football team at any point during those four years. This is the case regardless of whether or not they “redshirt” (are on the roster but don’t participate in games) and regardless of whether they were on the roster all four years.
#104 don’t think colt ever tried to play in the cfl.
#105,
Cogswell could be Hawaii bound if he doesn’t have any other offers. We have an open slot with Cayman leaving. Take a shot at him.
@gobows
Good info. Canadian citizens can’t defer their eligibility. Because of that it doesn’t make them ineligible if they want to play their 5th year. Last US college QB drafted appears to be ESPNs Jesse Palmer.
Great post, very informative. I ponder why the opposite experts of this sector don’t understand this. You must proceed your writing. I’m sure, you have a great readers’ base already!|What’s Going down i am new to this, I stumbled upon this I have discovered It absolutely useful and it has aided me out loads. I am hoping to give a contribution & aid different users like its helped me. Good job.
In order to be draft eligible, a player has to qualify as a “non-import”. Although people treat the terms as interchangeable, this isn’t always as simple as being “Canadian”.
If a player has lived in Canada for a total of five or more years (not necessarily consecutively) by the time he is eighteen, then he is considered a non-import.
If a player is known to have spent some portion of his first eighteen years living in another country then he may be required to submit documentation (school transcripts, medical records, parents’ tax bills, etc.) to the CFL and CFL Players Association (CFLPA) to prove his time of residency in Canada.
Tyler Cogswell, 6-4 228 has offers from Central Michigan, Florida International, Hawaii, and Nebraska.
Disregard this if pop music isn’t your thing, but Girls Generation released their newest album on New Years Day featuring the lead single “I Got A Boy”. The YouTube video got more than 7 million views the first day. I love the song and the video, but I’ve been a fan for awhile.
One of the things I find most interesting is the way the song kind of folds in on itself through its structure and lyrics. This will sound incredibly pretentious, but structurally the song reminds me of what Tarantino did with “Pulp Fiction” whereas the lyrics seem most akin to Joyce’s stream of consciousness where seemingly unrelated thoughts chase and tumble all over themselves.
The song is supposedly about what girls/young women feel at various points in a relationship starting with the first giddy pangs of mutual interest all the way to the my guy is a jerk phase. In that regard I would guess it would have pretty widespread appeal, at least to a female audience. Of course guys will check it out just because Girls Generation has a certain visual appeal.
And, yes, I do realize it is just a damn pop song. But quite a brilliant one, I think.

sometimes the subliminal message gets picked up right away.
good idea to re-recruit cogswell.
still a long shot becasue many will inquire about him now that the dead period will come to a momentary pause.
throw out that old list.
i guess the coaches are banking heavily that st. juste will commit.
a couple of really good looking norcal rb’s made serious inquiries only to be told that we weren’t recruiting anymor rb’s. one of them was called the poly drew-jones.
hmmmm.
kapakahi…it is true that the swinging door may still swing.
that is good news really. because it would mean that those who don’t want to be here will make way for those who do or deserve a scholie.
creative scholie allocation could also ensue, those five mid-year jc transfers could count for 2012 if there is room. (hint)
one door swings out while the another one swings in.
we could now entertain a few one and done guys…
you know, perhaps a center/guard from the trojan horse or a former tackle from his cross town rival.
pray tell there could be more 😉
wonders never cease to amaze…thats my first smiley. heh, heh.
i am hoping that the b-ball boys close out this homestand with a three game big west streak. that would bode well for attendance, curiosity, and the impetus that they’ll need on the road.
i like how the gibber slowly brought along manroop at the point. although he probably should be a 2, he’ll have to do well at the point this year before he slides over next year in his more comfortable sg position. the sham will be the pg next year no doubt.
i am looking forward to seeing aaron valdez on the court next year, he along with big caleb.
…and the word on the street is that michael thomas will make us forget about that other thomas guy.
and yah, i agree st that we should petition to be all in in all sports in the mwc. we need to solidify are position so that we won’t be just an afterthought.
sure the road to travel is tough but we need to a strong and viable conferenc member. we would fare well in softball, wvb, wbb, mbb, and baseball. of course, here’s hoping that we will starting chasing championships in football in a year or two.
A good 23-degrees morning!
Good luck, Cayman!
How do i extend the range on the Wireless N router? Weve an Xtreme N instant router (Dlink). I should extend the reach belonging to the wireless signal. I learn how to do it for a new G signal. I want to find out how to do it for an N transmission. Is it possible to use regular N routers while repeaters. If so, how to configure them. Thanks for any information.

Hey, wasn’t there a Wigwam at the McCully site a looong time ago. You know the former Longs McCully location. I also believe there was one way up in Kaimuki too.
Robert Hall?
@#142, gobows: Was there not a Wigwam on King Street where the former Longs was, soon to be Ross’?
