It’s official: Edwards applying for NFL draft

Cornerback/returner Mike Edwards will forgo his senior season and apply for the NFL draft.

Here’s the story: Edwards.

The cupboard won’t be bare. Ne’Quan Phillips and Tony Grimes have started. Brian Clay, who redshirted in 2012, and John Hardy-Tuliau could play there. The coaches like Anthony Pierce, who grayshirted this past fall, and Ronald Fields, who is awaiting verification of eligibility.

But, still, there was a reason Edwards was the Warriors’ MVP and a co-captain in 2012. He’s that good.

* * * * *

The recruiting dead period expires at 12:01 a.m. Thursday. No recruiting trips are planned for UH this weekend. Instead, the coaches are expected to make home visits. The dead period is activated next week because of the coaches’ convention. The Warriors have booked visits for the remaining three recruiting weekends prior to the Feb. 6 signing day.

* * * * *

The volleyball Warriors depart this evening for their season-opening road matches against Brigham Young on Friday and Saturday.

The Warriors usually arrive the day before a match. But because of favorable air fares, they will have an extra day of practice in Provo. That should be helpful in adjusting to the thin air.

Money is the root of all decisions.

It is why roving-eye Boise State spent a decade  begging to get into the Mountain West, a year pledging to the Big East and a couple of months deciding that the MWC is the better fit after all.

It also is why San Diego State is in a bit of a predicament. The Aztecs have $$$ in their eyes but holes in their pockets. There are five million reasons why the Aztecs might have trouble pulling the escape cord. The first lesson of being a wingman to Boise: Make sure you have your own ride home.

A diet is not a good resolution. The resolution should be a number (10 lbs), that way if you do cheat it doesn’t feel like you cannot achieve your resolution.

  3. kev-1 January 1, 2013 8:47 am

You have to consider what NFL scouts will do with your draft grade once they realize you played your college ball at Hawaii. Say you graded as a 3rd round pick based on your measurables and your statistics. Then throw in your school, conference, and level of competition, the scouts will drop that to a 6th round grade.

That said, Edwards has the talent.

Better than Mouton coming out? Ryan had more time as a Warrior though. Is that type of career enough to come out early?

  4. Former UH Athlete January 1, 2013 8:47 am

Hopefully Edwards stays, but I wouldn’t blame him at all for leaving. From what I saw watching the games, Edwards was definitely the fastest player in pads. His closing speed is excellent. Not surprised he graded better than expected

  5. Whats up January 1, 2013 8:48 am

Hope Mr Edwards stays but if not good luck, you represented yourself and Hawaii well.

    Happy New Year, gang!

I hope Mike stays to complete his education, but support him whatever he does. He’s a good man.

    Good luck to the VolleyBows!

Georgia vs. Nebraska . . . good game

    Re: Grades.

The one thing about the NCAA is it’s about talent, not conference affiliation.

Remember how Marshall Faulk didn’t win the Heisman? He ended up with a better NFL career than Gino Torretta.

    Same with Jerry Rice.

It’s always going to come down to the measurables.

And let’s not forget that Edwards initially played for Tennessee.

  12. Chicken Grease January 1, 2013 8:55 am

A Grease just took a physical picture/photo of his # 1 spot, so, do not change it, OK? 😉 . Mein Gott. You can be ichiban poasteur on any given day, but the FIRST DAY OF THE YEAR?!?! Cripes, ya’ll give a Grease some serious offerings. 🙂

Thanks to rage777, kev-1, Former UH Athlete, What’s up, Slugger, ai-eee-soos . . . and Mr. Stephen Tsai for waking up early (yes, a feat a New Years eve for all of us, even those not posting yet — wake up 🙂 ) on this first (as in THE GREASE WAS THE FIRST POSTEUR TODAY ON THE FIRST THE WARRIOR BEAT OF 2013!!!!!!!) day of the year of Our Lord, 2013.

  14. Former UH Athlete January 1, 2013 9:08 am

Kev-1., based in what I’ve seen, IMO, Edwards is better than Mouton in most areas, especially in the speed department.

Edwards being an excellent kick returner adds another dimension to his game that NFL teams love. The more versatile you are, the more valuable you are to them.

My gut feeling is if Edwards received a 1st/2nd round grade then he’s gone. If late 2nd/early 3rd, then it’s 50/50. Anything below that he stays. Edwards’ having kids to feed will play a big factor also.

  15. Bryson January 1, 2013 9:14 am

Sadly the Mike Edwards era is done in Manoa….Best wishes and luck as he goes after his dream…One great thing about someone with his talent playing for Hawaii is that it seemed to have opened the door for more skilled players such as himself to become Warriors!

Hopefully, Mike can go in the second round. Aloha for being a Warrior.

  19. gobows January 1, 2013 9:26 am

why would mike edwards stay another year at UH?

    he’s probably a 2nd day draftee.

    2 kids.

he has the rest of his life to finish school.

    aloha mike.

  20. Former UH Athlete January 1, 2013 9:26 am

Anyone else notice that Nebraska uses, what appears to be, a 10yr old ball on offense?

Add Taylor Martinez to the group of QBs with the ugliest/awkward throwing motions. This Prestigious group includes Tim Tebow, Colin Klien, Byron Leftwich, and every QB that’s ever played at Army/Navy/Air Force.

  21. Not an Expert January 1, 2013 9:28 am

The AD needs to research what sports both men and women needs to be cut and yet meet the criteria for section 9. If that saves a lot of money it needs to be done for the sake of all cause if the budget cannot be met by football than you can say goodbye to division 1 and the other sports program anyway.

  22. A-House January 1, 2013 9:35 am

I guess I read wrong when ST wrote that the blog would be closed on x-mas eve and day and it would also apply to New Years – not the first time and certainly not the last!

Rainy in our valley and some what chilly.

  23. kev-1 January 1, 2013 9:38 am

ST . . . I understand what you’re saying about grades. Yes, grades are based on measurables. But, my point is what NFL scouts do with those grades once they consider all of the other factors, because afterall, that is what they do. Now, I am not saying Edwards won’t make it, or doesn’t have the measurables to remain a high grade.

Former UH Athlete . . . I agree with you that he probably will be higher than Mouton.

  24. kev-1 January 1, 2013 9:41 am

The whole “Edwards has two kids” argument needs to be reconsidered. A degree would serve two kids too. Let’s not forget that successful NFL careers are few and far between. Injuries, numbers, chance, and luck all factor into an athletes career.

Of course, what do I know. An initial rookie NFL contract is more that I could hope for over years of work. So why not right?

  25. Stephen Tsai January 1, 2013 9:41 am

He hasn’t said it, but I think Edwards is gone.

  26. AlaWai January 1, 2013 9:44 am

Good Luck and God Bless to Mike Edwards. Make the best decision for you and your family. Hawai’i will be here for you always. God willing you will thrill us in the NFL and come back in the Pro Bowl. Hau’oli Makahiki Hou!

  27. Stephen Tsai January 1, 2013 9:45 am

I think Edwards wants to be more involved in his sons’ lives.

That’s not possible nor affordable as a UH student.

I think that could be a factor.

  28. Stephen Tsai January 1, 2013 9:47 am

Unfortunately for UH fans, Edwards, like Mouton, will have had too brief a stay in Hawaii. I don’t think people really got to appreciate Mouton’s efforts. Mouton wasn’t even a starter in 2007.

  29. kev-1 January 1, 2013 9:51 am

ST #27 . . . that’s a good point. You can always return to school I guess. Good luck to him. I wish him well and will be following his career for sure.

All indicatiions are that Mike will say Aloha.

    Aloha to Mike too!

  33. al January 1, 2013 10:12 am

the thing about draft assessments, is that it is just that. a couple guys saying oh yah maybe a 3-4 rounder. quite often the assessment is over valued from what we’ve seen in the recent past.

one issue will be his chronic shoulder which could take him down a round or two.

i like mike. he’s in there with all the current and former nfler’s of warriors past. should he go then we’ll probably miss the intangibles that make mike the man.

    we’ll miss his leadership.

we’ll miss his ability to recruit others like him.

    we’ll miss his persona.

we’ll miss mike the man more than anything else.

    …nuff said.

  34. kapakahi January 1, 2013 10:14 am

Said it last year, but merits repeating again this year…..

With OG Reeve Koehler (Saint Louis) looking like he’s probably gonna commit elsewhere, JMHO that UH should begin actively recruiting Star Advertiser 1st Team All-State OG Charles Sataraka (Farrington HS)…..defiinitely a solid run-blocker….and an academic qualifier…..especially now that the new Colorado HC is still re-evaluating scholie offers (of which Sataraka was offered by previous Buff coaching staff).

Check out Sataraka…..effectively blocking Tulimasealii and Pagano last season….among others…..

    Video: http://www.pacificathleticalliance.com/index.php?option=com_hwdvideoshare&task=viewvideo&Itemid=31&video_id=464

The ball is now squarely in the court of the Warrior coaching staff.

  35. al January 1, 2013 10:16 am

    ryan mouton was oft injured.

he probably played at 75% of his God given abilities and yet he was drafted and played.

he probably, had he been healthy, would have displayed his true talents every day. the glimpses of greatness that he did display were enough indication of his ability.

    still one of my favorites.

he too, a most humble man.

  36. kapakahi January 1, 2013 10:17 am

Sataraka….not only effectively blocking Tulimasealii and Pagano last season…..but also Mililani’s Dakota Turner & Mene Perese too….

  37. Stephen Tsai January 1, 2013 10:22 am

Sataraka is on the recruiting board.

    JV:

    Thanks for the TV info.

  41. Derek January 1, 2013 10:25 am

I think Edwards got a 3rd round grade. He probably thought he would be a 4th rounder. In the NFL there are no guarantees. At the earliest he probably would be selected in the late 3rd round. Then again, he could be picked in the 4th, 5th, or even in the 6th round too. All depends on his workouts. Tough decision, but my gut says he’s going to declare for the draft. He has to take care of his family. Whatever he decides, I will be rooting for him. If he decides to return he’ll probably says that he wants to finish his degree and he has unfinished business helping the team to a winning season and get to a bowl game.

It’s looking better and better. USC looked terrible yesterday. Barkley gone. Woods going early. McDonald, gone. Kiffin senior retiring, they lose 2 Starting DE , a CB, a SS, the punter, and the center. If our Warriors get lucky upset possibilities get better at home.

  42. kapakahi January 1, 2013 10:32 am

    ST,

Turner is a SDSU commit, whereas Perese is a Weber State commit.

While it is a highlight video clip…..JMHO that the pancake blocks by Satakara…..considering the highly touted opposition…..is pretty impressive.

Meanwhile while Savaiinaea and Koehler highly doubtful, hearing that UH is still in contention for Titus.

Hopefully the Warrior defensive coaches still have Kailua’s DT Jeremiah Taleni…..who has at least one firm scholie offer from a Pac-12 school…..on the recruiting board.

Impressive season highlights…..especially against Kahuku and Farrington.

Sounds like Demo’s been pretty busy arranging official recruiting trips for Floridians in the coming weeks.

Looking like Battle, Higdon, McCollum, St. Juste among those from the Sunshine State who will be tripping here….the weekend of Jan. 18.

Hope that Marrell & Ne’Quan are good hosts!

he made KT look bad, but what about the other 30 or so offensive plays…

he looks too heavy for his frame, not sure if he can run

he has huge thighs, possible career in sumo if he has the heart to withstand the demeaning training that they go through.

  51. Derek January 1, 2013 11:16 am

Good chance that Chip Kelly will leave for the NFL after the bowl game. Boise State holding their okoles because the Ducks surely will be after Chris Petersen and I think he will accept because 1) Oregon has the money and the resources 2) they have a top 10 team already, 3) they have the path to get to and win the national championship and 4) where would you want to live, in Boise, ID or Eugene, OR. Easy choice to me.

  52. Warrior Dave January 1, 2013 11:16 am

Should he stay or should he go?

I feel so bad for what happened to Colt when he decided to stay. It was a magical season in 2007 but definitely hurt his draft stock. Think Matt Barkley wish he went last year too.

  53. Warrior Dave January 1, 2013 11:19 am

    Derek,

Interesting thought but Peterson had turned down more $$$ before. I remember reading the school system was ideal for his daughter who I think has special needs. I apolgize if I am wrong.

  54. tommui January 1, 2013 11:21 am

How much is the exit fee should BSU decide to once more switch conferences?

  55. kapakahi January 1, 2013 11:27 am

    #47,

See #42. Like I said….understood that it’s just a highlight video clip….and not full game footage…..but JMHO that the pancake blocks by Satakara…..considering the highly touted opposition…..are still pretty impressive.

Farrington rushed for over 250 yards against Waianae in the 2012 pre-season game…..so pretty good bet that it was more of the same for KT that game against Sataraka & the Govs.

Another video highlight clip….just against Mililani….when Govs rushed for over 300 yards….

    http://www.pacificathleticalliance.com/index.php?option=com_hwdvideoshare&task=viewvideo&Itemid=31&video_id=452

Gotta agree that Sataraka will need to get in better condition…..and lose 20-to-30 lbs at the next level…..but otherwise he fits the bill…..as a good interior run-blocker…..for the power running game….as part of Coach Chow’s Pro Set offensive schemes. That’s why Cabral originally offered Sataraka previously…..since Sataraka fit Embree’s intended power running game approach too.

Being a Gov…..no doubt that Sataraka is rough & tough…..like recent former Govs who became Warriors…..like Manuwai, Samuseva, Lafaele, Fonoti, Vele, Williams….

Best part is that Sataraka is already an academic qualifier.

  56. MauiSamurai January 1, 2013 11:30 am

Good luck M Edwards! Do what’s best for U and your family. Remember football is a business and U need to make the best business decision for U and your family. Colt should have gone after his Jr year because his stock fell a lot the following year. Best wishes for U and your family – MAHALO for your time at UH!

  57. Warrior Dave January 1, 2013 11:33 am

    Question to the Tsai-kos:

So many names being mentioned as possible recruits. Would you be upset if an existing players scholarship was not renewed so your recruit could get in?

My personal feeling is if its a personnel upgrade you have to do it. The fans will not support a losing program.

  58. Derek January 1, 2013 11:37 am

Warrior Dave, would a person want say $2 million or $4 million. I don’t know what Peterson is making but I would guess in the $1.5 to $2 million at the best. Oregon can give any amount they want. I’m sure the Eugene schools have special needs available, at least as good if not better than Boise.

  59. el burro sabio January 1, 2013 11:40 am

It’s really easy to say “can go back to school later”, yet very hard to do.

  60. el burro sabio January 1, 2013 11:41 am

It’s better to make $2 million in Boise than to be unemployed in Eugene if you don’t win.

  61. kapakahi January 1, 2013 11:45 am

    #44,

Taleni WAS on the Warrior recruiting board in late-November/early-December…..but don’t know if he’s STILL ON the Warrior recruiting board now.

Like Sataraka, Taleni also probably needs to get in better condition….and drop 20 lbs at the next level….but would still be a good get…..since JMHO that not yet any obvious top DT prospects among the local HS Class of 2014 prospects.

  62. Derek January 1, 2013 12:01 pm

Remember when Oregon and Stanford were terrible football teams. Not any more. Also, Kansas State. What is true is that because of the 85 total scholarships limit is that more teams have very good football players. Also, academics plays a big part with tutors etc. highly regarded academic institutions like Duke, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Rice all went to bowl games this year and 3 of them won their games. Teams that lose make stupid penalties like Iowa State yesterday. With good coaching and good recruiting you can turnaround a program. I hope Coach Chow and his staff are on the right track. Let’s pray!

  63. Warrior Dave January 1, 2013 12:04 pm

    Derek,

I WANT Peterson to go! It will be interesting to see what he can do with 4 to 5 star rated players.

Wonder how the current Ducks are doing with a pending NCAA sanctions and Coach rumored to be leaving. Makes me want to take the points. Haha

  64. al January 1, 2013 12:07 pm

everyone thought he was going, going, gone.

    however…

  68. jeezy33 January 1, 2013 12:51 pm

    55. I think its a numbers game at this point. UH has gotten commitments from some caliber guys and are focusing their attention to some play makers.

UH got commitments from their 2 top DT targets in Tulimasealii and kid from Samoa. Not sure if they are expecting Moala to transfer this year or not. Would like to get Ofa Hautau tho.

I would still want to get Taleni if we have the available scholarships.

  69. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 1, 2013 12:54 pm

Unfortunate for the upcoming season that Edwards wont be here. Wish him all the best. Gotta look out for #1 first, literally.

At first I was thinking what harm could happen if he stayed just one more year. Then I remembered Matt Barkley.

    Good Luck, Mike.

  70. G-money January 1, 2013 12:56 pm

Call me a hater if you please, but Edwards was not that impressive to me as a db/cb. Other than the other team not always throwing in his direction (maybe they see what I don’t) but there were several times that Edwards was left grasping for a wr that simply burned him on the play. Fast, maybe, but not overly instinctive in making the type of play that you don’t see being made by at least one player on every opponent Hawaii played against. Very above average in my book as a db/cb.

As a returner, I’m torn. Yes, he had the TD returns which were all magnificent, but again, nothing overly impressive when compared to someone like Ace Sanders at S.Carolina, or the honey badger of LSU. Trust me, he is NOT being drafted for his return abilities.

Best case, he makes the team (yes, I’m saying he’ll have to earn it) and becomes a role player much like mouton (who I feel was a better natural talent).

Worst case, he declares and gets drafted but ends up being a GA for our beloved warriors while finishing his degree.

    Just my honest opinion

  71. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 1, 2013 12:57 pm

    al,

I don’t think even A-Joe could stop this one from going.

  72. Warrior Dave January 1, 2013 12:58 pm

MWC Comish Thompson is a snake. Just read Ferd’s column. Said that UH will have to pay travel to BSU and whoever they added.

Wasn’t the original agreement that any members after UH would not get any travel subsidy? Or did that just pertain to WCC?

  73. G-money January 1, 2013 1:03 pm

Ohh, but I would like to wish him the best of luck if he does indeed declare.

Who am I to say that he won’t be successful in the NFL? Heck I’ll definitely cheer for the guy, but I just don’t see him breaking thru at the next level.. Measurables or not.

  74. Inyoface January 1, 2013 1:11 pm

Hopefully Edwatds can hold on to the ball on kick returns in the NFL.

  75. Kevin January 1, 2013 1:17 pm

BIG WEST… BIG WEST CONFERENCE BIG WEST CONFERENCE.. is where our other sports are… the BIG WEST CONFERENCE. BWC not WCC… the BIG WEST CONFERENCE is where our other sports are.

Commissioner Dennis Farrell of the BIG WEST CONFERENCE (where our other sports are) proclaimed UH’s OTHER sports in the BIG WEST CONFERENCE will not have to pay subsidies for any new teams added, if any.

In the BIG WEST CONFERENCE.. where our other sports are.

  76. Kevin January 1, 2013 1:17 pm

    BIG WEST CONFERENCE

  77. kapakahi January 1, 2013 1:31 pm

    #68,

Looking more like Taleni part of the back-up contingency plan…..like Samia & Yap were before (with Mack back in 2010)…..IF can’t land next DT target Ofa Hautau (who is also considering Nebraska, Oregon State, Utah & Utah State)…..since Moala’s status uncertain with some school work still to take care of.

Some past names who were supposed to be possible impact players, but either didn’t show up or did not meet expectations.

    1) Gabe Tuata – June Jones said he’s the next coming of Barry Sanders. Or some thing to that effect.

    2) Andrew Pearman – frankly I don’t know what happened to him. Maybe went back to Virginia.

    3) Attrice Brooks – had the physical tools and I think he was a 4 star recruit, but he was a head case.

    4) Kevin Konrath – maybe he didn’t like Hawaii, but he quit. Never played a game.

    5) Jared Flint – played in spurts, mostly a back up.

    6) George Ornellas – high school player of the year. Maybe he lost the fire to play college football or was it academics. He had a couple of decent game(s).

    And some that did:

    1) Pisa Tinoisamoa – highly touted that Jones believed in him.

    2) Josh Leonard- JC 5 star recruit.

    3) Colt Brennan – had a 3 star rating out of JC.

    4) Michael Carter – out of Long Beach he was an option wizard. He was.

    5) Samson Satele – started for 4 years.

    6) Jeff Sydner – touted as a playmaker. He was terrific.

Mines was based on ones return skills and ability to separate oneself from an ‘average’ returner. Edwards, in my opinion is a one move and if I’m lucky break it kind of returner. When have you ever seen him create his own return, ala Mighty Mouse? Huh?

Coach Mack did great job recruiting edwards. like oceanside, CA’s tinoisamoa, radford’s lelie, oakland’s bess, american samoa’s sopoanga, damien’s pilares, and all others before, make hawai’i football proud in the nfl, Mike! great job!

  108. Most of whatever you assert happens to be astonishingly appropriate and it makes me wonder the reason why I hadn’t looked at this in this light previously. This particular piece truly did turn the light on for me as far as this subject goes. 109. Old School Dave January 1, 2013 6:52 pm

#95: One highly touted UH recruit I remember was Jay McGee (1980s) RB, Brockton, MA. He was called the second coming of Tony Dorsett. Never played a down for UH.

  110. laulau head January 1, 2013 7:05 pm

    #95…

How’s about RB Charles Tharp. Was WAC co-freshman of the year in 1997, got suspended in 1999, and left team to become star at Western Illinois.

  111. kapakahi January 1, 2013 7:38 pm

    #106,

Mack was not involved with the names mentioned.

Ashley Lelie was walk-on under Von Appen….and Tinoisamoa, Bess, and Sopoaga were recruited by JJ…..while Pilares was bounce-back from the AFA. JJ gets credit for Tinoisamoa & Bess, while Miano gets credit for Sopoaga & Pilares.

  112. kapakahi January 1, 2013 7:38 pm

Miano & Tuioti recruited Edwards…..for Mack.

  113. expat January 1, 2013 7:41 pm

Don’t forget Jamal Farmer — will never forget Paul Johnson’s line that his problem was that there weren’t any helmets big enough for his head. Waiting in the wings was Travis Sims — who became one of the all time best UH RBs running behind one of the best UH lines.

  114. kapakahi January 1, 2013 7:45 pm

    #95,

    Some clarifications…..

    – Tuata was never re-recruited back to UH….after Mt. SAC College.

    – As previously confirmed by ST, Konrath….who was a Glanville recruit….redshirted his true frosh season…..but never quit….and instead turned out to be a casualty….when Mack took over for JJ.

    – Flint never re-gained his form after suffering a shoulder injury to his throwing arm.

    – Ornellas had some personal habits….that affected his academic standing.

Greg Salas was a JJ recruit. Mack’s recruits weren’t top notch. Al and Jeezy33 would know more on their assessments. Chow and his staff are doing a good job in my opinion.

For those of you who want to be educated and informed about the financial future of the University of Hawai`i – in particular Manoa – and Aloha Stadium, the following legislative briefings will be be held over the next two weeks.

These presentations made by the administrative heads of the departments as well as the governor/lt. governor will be held before the State Senate’s Ways And Means Committee and the State House’s Finance Committee. Some of the briefings are joint while others are held separately.

The focus of these hearings will be on the overall financial revenue expectations and the departments’ overall financial requests which will be submitted during the next two weeks.

If you have specific issues you want to see addressed, then make sure that you contact the $$$$ and the subject matter chairs as well as your own representative and senator outside of the hearing. No public testimony will be accepted at these briefings.

NOTE: Although the Senate has organized its committees, there is a new opening now that Senator Shan Tsutsui has been named Lt. Governor. The State House has not re-organized yet so most of the 2011-2012 members still in office will be at these meetings along with the nine newly-elected House members. These new members will be placed on the committee in 2013.

Senator David Ige chairs the Ways And Means Committee and Senator Brian Taniguchi chairs the Higher Education Committee. Representative Marcus Oshiro currently chairs the Finance Committee and Represntative Scott Nishimoto currentlyh chairs the Higher Education Committee. They may or may not be chairing these committees once the Legislature is in session.

For more information about the presentations and the reports, contact the Public Access Room at 587-0478. The staff will show/tell you how to access the materials on-line.

You can also record/watch some of the hearings an “Capitol TV” – check their website at http://www.capitoltv.org for further information.

We will see Barry Sanders next season. Sanders Jr. is redshirting at Stanford this year because playing time would be limited under senior Stephan Taylor. Sanders will see lots of action at running back for sure as a RF. He was a 4 star recruit.

Speaking of the Cardinal, they are a very, very physical bunch. I am impressed.

  125. jeezy33 January 1, 2013 8:18 pm

    118. Mack’s recruiting was pretty laughable if you ask me. ST probably knows a lot more in depth on who he actually recruited but it is pretty embarrassing on signing day when he doesn’t even remember the names of his recruits and over hypes everyone.

He missed out on a ton of in state talent.

I got criticism here for knocking on recruiting Ijumaa Armstrong. I clearly knew he wasn’t a D1 guy. I guess I won’t get too much heat now for saying it considering he quit.

I actually thought Thomas Olds was a sleeper based on his highlight film but he turned out to be a undersized lazy party animal.

It was clear we recruited a bunch of guys who weren’t being pursued by D1 schools period though.

  126. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 1, 2013 8:18 pm

Would be nice to one day rival Stanford’s offense. Something Hawaii should be shooting for.

  127. kapakahi January 1, 2013 8:27 pm

    #120,

Warriors have not been actively recruiting CB/PR/KR Damarious Randall…..BUT that could all change now.

Still an ASU Sun Devil lean….but also tripping and considering TCU, Louisville & Nebraska…..so might still have another recruiting trip left to visit UH….if there’s a free weekend left.

  128. Bryson January 1, 2013 8:28 pm

#46: I Believe Simeon Thomas & Barry Higdon are visiting in the 11th of this month…

  130. Derek January 1, 2013 8:31 pm

I would assume either Paul Johnson or Mike Sewak recruited Jason Elam. A great, great kicker and punter.

  131. kapakahi January 1, 2013 8:44 pm

    #125,

While I agree with your general commentary about local recruiting recruiting efforts (of lack thereof) under Mack….as evidenced by my own numerous rants over the years….I’ll take the following exception…..

OL Coach Gordy Shaw did a pretty solid job of recruiting OL with the 2010 & 2011 Signing Classes…..Afusia, Lefotu, Loyd, Shigematsu in 2010…..and Dew, Muir, Olds in 2011….but just didn’t get the opportunity and time to develop them….

Whatever his off-the-field habits, Thomas Olds showed promise on the field with the scout team OL….quick & explosive off the ball…..despite being undersized. Playing either C or OG, Olds more than held his own against the then starting DT rotation (Correa, Hanohano, Masch, Meatoga & Tuipulotu). Olds’ off-the-field issues (and not his on-the-field performance) were the problem.

  132. kapakahi January 1, 2013 8:49 pm

    #46, #117 & #128,

Thomas and St. Juste supposed to be tripping here on the 11th….but not sure about Higdon…..while Battle and McCollum supposed to be tripping here on the 18th.

Will be interesting to see if other Floridians (Jackson, McDonald, Wester, etc.) also trip here or not.

  133. kitsunegari January 1, 2013 8:57 pm

    I I I me me me I I I . ego. laughable.

  134. kapakahi January 1, 2013 9:01 pm

    #118,

JMHO that the OL Coach still needs to demonstrate his effectiveness in recruiting OL prospects….at least with local high schools…..which should be a core source for the OL…..like how Cavanaugh….and even Shaw….were. Just haven’t heard anything positive yet….at least from a few local HS coaches.

Could be a reason why Koehler likely to commit elsewhere. Also could be a reason why others (including Coach himself) have been so actively involved with the OL recruiting efforts.

    Hmmm….

  135. cocobean January 1, 2013 9:20 pm

    Season’s greetings.

Mouton was a lot faster than Edwards when he came out. Think he had either the 1st or 2nd best 40 time at the combine. Don’tthink Mike has a sub 4.5 on record. that should be his workout goal.

Paredes ran a sub 4.6 and got some good looks by several teams. Mike should train under whoever Paredes did.

Mouton, son of a preacher man. No baggage. Mike will have to overcome some youthful indiscretions. In the NFL character counts. Ask Colt how many times NFL types asked him about the “incident” in AZ.

  136. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc January 1, 2013 9:24 pm

For those of you who have ideas about or concerns about UH recruiting, then I strongly urge you to get together in person or electronically to identify the major issues. Then make an appointment to meet up with the new Director of Athletics. He’s the one who can initiate changes or approve/disapprove of those being used by the coaching staff.

He starts on Monday, January 14.

I was scanning the archives of ST’s New Years Eve blog entries and found this one from 6 years ago…the first New Year eve of the blog. ST had posted his blog rules several times…in different words, but with remarkable consistency:

    December 31, 2007

    Stephen Tsai wrote:

Selfishly, I wish Mike Edwards would return for his senior season with the UH Football team.

However, in my opinion, the young man has to do what is good for him and his two sons. I get that, completely.

I mean, wish we all had the chance to ask guys like Matt Barkley and Colt Brennan if they had any regrets. Not too many Andrew Lucks or Peyton Mannings in the world right?

Edwards “balled out” as a junior with the Warriors, and brother, your efforts were very much appreciated by many!

  154. WarriorNY January 1, 2013 11:25 pm

    Good Luck to Mike Edwards!

I hope the Giants draft him. He’s going to be an absolute steal in the mid-rounds.

ST said it best in his article, he was 12th in the nation in pass breakups and that’s in spite of the fact that in 5 games teams did not even throw the ball in his direction… Mouton was a great athlete but Edwards is a legit shutdown corner.

I’d make the comparison to the NY Jets corners… Antonio Cromartie is a great athlete, Darrell Revis is a just a great shutdown corner…

  155. WarriorNY January 1, 2013 11:33 pm

I need to coin the phrase “Edwards Island”

  156. PurpleMaple January 1, 2013 11:54 pm

Mac also recruited Charles Tua’au (Leilehua/2010) and Tigi Hill (Kahuku/2011). Both ended up going to a JC and both has re-committed to sign with Hawaii for the 2013 class. So who says Mac did not recruit local players. I thought they did quite well. Mac also recruited Aaron Brown and Alex Green, both now on NFL rosters. Next will be Mike Edwards. Mac recruited 14 Hawaii players as part of the 2010 class. So who says Mac did not make an effort to recruit locally. Please get your facts straight before bemoaning the recruiting efforts of the previous coaching staff, as if the results of the 2012 season were the fault of poor recruiting. They recruited for the run and shoot. It’s now the Pro-set or whatever its called. The UH administration simply dumped on Mac and his staff. Look at Dave Aranda, now the DC with the Wisconsin Badgers and Rolovich now the OC with the Temple Owls. Guess that coaching staff was not bad.

  157. Nearly all of what you mention happens to be astonishingly legitimate and it makes me wonder why I hadn’t looked at this in this light before. It is indeed my belief that mesothelioma is actually the most lethal cancer. It has unusual attributes. The more I look at it the greater I am sure it does not work like a true solid human cancer. If perhaps mesothelioma is really a rogue viral infection, in that case there is the chance for developing a vaccine and also offering vaccination to asbestos uncovered people who are at high risk with developing foreseeable future asbestos related malignancies. Thanks for discussing your ideas on this important ailment.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Best of luck Mike Edwards and thank you!

  169. Independent Thinker January 2, 2013 6:40 am

Good luck, Edwards. What is the latest on our new recruits?

  170. tommui January 2, 2013 6:55 am

While it has been pointed out that we would only be paying travel expenses for four football teams, the Commissioner said that we probably would have to pay expenses for the “new” teams like BSU.

Has our AD been talking with the Commissioner to clarify this – or do we have an AD in place yet? Do we get the same secondary rights for TV like Boise i.e.

being able to sell our games to Oceanic or whoever?

  172. Shoko January 2, 2013 7:06 am

One kind of wonders if Thompson is using travel subsidies to make it look less attractive for Hawaii to be apart of the conference. A subtle way of trying to push UH out.

  173. HawaiiMongoose January 2, 2013 7:33 am

ST, you might want to do a little more fact-checking on SDSU’s situation. It’s been reported that SDSU’s contract with the Big East allows either party to terminate the agreement with no penalty if Boise State backs out of joining the Big East, as has happened. If that’s correct, SDSU won’t owe the Big East an exit penalty.

I think SDSU’s problem is that Boise State does owe the Big East a $5 million exit penalty (for withdrawing before SDSU), and the MWC has agreed to help pay it. I doubt the MWC is willing to incur that expense and then let SDSU rejoin the MWC for free. It’s more likely that the MWC will want SDSU to cover part or all of that expense as its entry fee for rejoining the conference.

#173 why should boise or the mwc pay anything to the big least, they don’t matter, they’re as good as the wac.

  177. Shoko January 2, 2013 8:08 am

Boise State’s agreement with the Mountain West to remain an all-sports member of the conference

    Read more here: http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2013/01/02/bmurphy/mountain_west_pay_3_million_boise_state_exit_fees#storylink=cpy

The Mountain West will extend an option to San Diego State to join the league before offering membership to any other institution. The right of first option to San Diego State shall expire on Jan. 31.

  178. HawaiiMongoose January 2, 2013 8:21 am

Shoko, thanks for the link. It’s really interesting that BSU made the MWC promise to offer SDSU an invitation. That wasn’t public information before.

  179. Shoko January 2, 2013 8:34 am

Yep, both SDSU and BSU were in a joint venture when they decided to leave for the Big East. Makes sense that BSU would ask the MW to take back SDSU. After all, SDSU did push the Big West to take Boise State’s other sports when they had no home.

  180. jiminy cricket January 2, 2013 8:35 am

The restructured TV deal that the MWC negotiated is really good for UH…. if June Jones comes back. He is an ESPN favorite bc he is a winner, his schemes are so entertaining to watch and would make UH lots of money. June Jones and Hawaii are like Yin and Yang, chocolate chips and cookie, loco and moco, spam and eggs….they just go so well together.

Mainland fans are always intrigued in watching Hawaii football when June Jones is coaching. The Hawaii brand is always a great attraction. They always got very high ratings on ESPN. Look at SMU this year, I think they were on ESPN about 6 times! Under the new MWC contract, that would have been a minimum $1.8 million for UH.

Sorry to say that Norm Chow’s offense is so boring and not right for Hawaii. I was so bored at the games this year after many many years of watching UH football. Power offensive schemes don’t work for mid majors who are trying to beat the BCS schools. With the new MWC contract, pray for JJ’s return…it will really make a difference.

  181. jiminy cricket January 2, 2013 8:42 am

UH is very vulnerable to the MWC and has absolutely no leverage with a really bad football team and all of its other sports in the Big West. There is really no reason for the other schools to keep UH in the MWC, unless it has a nationally recognized football team which JJ will bring. Give Norm Chow one more year and then bring back JJ. He wants to come back. After this year, there is no buy out from his SMU contract. He will be affordable to UH…make that UH cannot afford to not bring him back.

  182. SteveM January 2, 2013 8:42 am

SteveM wants to see SDSU back in the MW playing UH.

The MW conference games are mostly starting October every year.

The Alaska cruise season is over and many ships are in the LA-San Diego area.

Most of them depart Sunday (day after the game)

    Fares are usually low.

Garret is in San Diego and hawnstln sails from there often. 🙂

BTW, cruises possible after the 2013 Oregon and Navy Game are tracked at:

  183. Shoko January 2, 2013 8:47 am

Jim Mastro, former Wolf Pack RB coach, said it’d be silly for the next coach to dismiss the Pistol offense.

“He pointed to this year’s Hawaii team, which dumped the run-and-shoot offense under first-year coach Norm Chow. The results were ugly. The Warriors went 3-9 and averaged just 21.2 points per game.”

““Certain schools need a gimmick,” Mastro said. “I always thought Hawaii going away from the run-and-shoot was a bad idea. Texas Tech has the Air Raid. At Washington State, we have the Air Raid. You need some sort of gimmick that puts you on the map. Nevada has the Pistol. Anytime somebody uses that, the first thing people think about is Nevada.”

Sounds like he’s trying to sell himself as Ault’s successor.

  184. Shoko January 2, 2013 8:49 am

Yet another candidate thats trying to sell himself. Meet SMU defensive coordinator Tom Mason. JJ might be looking for another DC.

    http://blogs.rgj.com/packblog/2013/01/02/potential-wolf-pack-coaching-candidate-tom-mason-said-he-can-fix-nevadas-defense/

  185. Shoko January 2, 2013 8:54 am

Just read that SDSU is looking for another offensive coordinator. Andy Ludwig was picked up by newly hired Wisconsin head coach, Gary Andersen. Not sure if it was mentioned before, but Andersen took Dave Aranda with him as DC

  186. Old School Dave January 2, 2013 8:57 am

Give it another year. After Bob Wagner’s first season as HC in 87, running Paul Johnson’s Spread, UH fans were screaming for Wagner to to scrap that offense because it wasn’t working and was ineffective.
